Android is rolling out a new set of theft protection updates focused on stopping unauthorized access, limiting damage after a device is stolen, and improving recovery. The changes build on existing protections and target a growing problem where phone theft often leads to financial fraud and data theft, not just loss of hardware.

Stolen phones can expose banking apps, saved passwords, and personal information within minutes if security is bypassed. Google says these updates are designed to make Android devices harder to unlock, harder to misuse, and easier to secure remotely.

Several of the new features apply to devices running Android 16 and later. One update expands control over Failed Authentication Lock. This feature, first introduced in Android 15, automatically locks the screen after too many failed unlock attempts. It now has a dedicated enable or disable toggle in settings, giving users direct control over how the feature works on their device.

Android is also expanding Identity Check. The feature, introduced in early 2025 for Android 15 and above, requires biometric authentication for sensitive actions when the user is outside trusted locations. Later in the year, Google extended Identity Check to all apps and features that use the Android Biometric Prompt. This means third-party banking apps and Google Password Manager now automatically require biometric verification under these conditions.

Protection against screen lock guessing is also being tightened. Android is increasing the lockout time after repeated failed PIN, pattern, or password attempts. To avoid accidental lockouts, repeated identical incorrect guesses no longer count toward the retry limit.

Recovery tools are getting updates as well. Remote Lock, which lets users lock a lost or stolen device through android.com/lock, now includes an optional security question or challenge. This step helps confirm that the person requesting the lock is the device owner. These recovery updates are available on devices running Android 10 and later.

In Brazil, Android is enabling theft protection by default on new devices. Theft Detection Lock and Remote Lock now turn on automatically during setup. Theft Detection Lock uses on-device AI to detect snatch-and-run thefts and quickly locks the screen.

For a long time, smartphone updates were something most people didn’t think about until it was already too late. You buy a phone, it works well for a year or two, and then updates slowly stop arriving. You might then decide to change the device entirely, rather than be frustrated about low update counts. 

However, smartphone hardware in 2026 is mature and durable enough that even a mid-range phone can last for years. As a result, consumers are now more attentive to the software updates a brand offers before buying the device. 

As a result, five years of updates, once seen as generous, is now being discussed as the bare minimum—at least for phones that don’t come cheap.

And the question is no longer whether long update guarantees matter. It’s whether five years is becoming the new standard, and which companies are actually prepared to commit to it in a meaningful way.

Updates Used to Be a Side Note

Not that long ago, Android phones typically offered two years of major operating system updates and maybe another year of security patches. Some brands didn’t even make clear promises. You often had to rely on past behavior and hope your model wasn’t forgotten too quickly.

Apple, though, was apart from the beginning. iPhones have gained a reputation for getting updates for five years or more, and this is true even for their budget models. This became one of the quiet reasons people were willing to spend more on an iPhone and keep it longer.

Meanwhile, Android manufacturers focused more on hardware than software optimization and longevity. 

This is not the case anymore as update promises have now become a major part of new phone announcements. 

Why Update Length Suddenly Matters More

There are a few reasons people care more about update duration than ever.

First and foremost, phones have slightly climbed a price ladder that users now expect them to offer a premium experience for the cash they pay. And this includes software updates. 

Second, people are holding onto phones longer. As even the budget smartphones now offer a good hardware combo, annual upgrades are no longer the norm for most users. Many keep the same phone for four or five years, and short software support makes that harder. 

Third and most importantly, regulators are also paying attention in this regard. For instance, the European Union’s new rules now mandate smartphone makers to provide at least five years of operating system and security updates. This is a big deal as long-term support is not just a marketing choice, but a legal requirement.

Also, companies that sell phones globally are unlikely to create completely different update policies just for Europe. It’s simpler to raise the baseline everywhere, so this legal mandate could benefit global users too.

Five Years Is No Longer Impressive

Google and Samsung have already set a bare minimum bar for Android phones. Samsung, for example, offers 6 years of OS and security updates even on its most affordable Galaxy A07.

Apple also offers long-term iOS support for every iPhone, though it doesn’t mention a specific number for each model.

Then there are companies like Fairphone, which have taken a different approach altogether. Its latest devices focus heavily on repairability and longevity, paired with long software support and easily replaceable parts. It’s not a mainstream phone for everyone, but it shows what’s possible when long-term use is the primary goal for a company.

Efforts from such companies made people aware of and forced brands to adjust their software timeline. Motorola, for example, has historically had a mixed reputation for updates; however, newer high-end models now come with significantly longer support promises than before.

All of this reveals a new reality. Phone makers can promise longer updates, but they should be willing to do that. 

The Role of Chipmakers (and Why This Changed Things)

One of the quiet reasons update promises are getting longer is that chipmakers are finally supporting it.

In the past, phone manufacturers often blamed Qualcomm or other chip suppliers for limited update lifespans. And that was somewhat true. As the chip-level support ends, updating a phone becomes harder and more expensive for brands. 

However, this excuse is wearing thin. Newer Snapdragon platforms are designed to support many years of Android updates, in some cases up to eight years. Google’s closer involvement with Android development has also made long-term support easier to plan.

This doesn’t mean updates are free or effortless — they still require engineering work, testing, and coordination — but the technical ceiling is much higher than it used to be. 

Not All “Five Years” Mean the Same Thing

This is where things get slightly complicated.

When companies say “five years of updates,” they don’t always mean five major Android upgrades. Sometimes it’s three OS updates and two extra years of security patches. Other times, it could mean longer security support with fewer feature updates.

For most users, security updates are the most important part. They keep your phone safe and compatible with essential apps. Still, the lack of clear language can make comparisons difficult.

There’s also the question of delivery. Promising seven years of updates is one thing. Delivering them on time, globally, and without major bugs is another. Some manufacturers have strong track records here, while others have struggled, especially outside their home markets.

Who’s Leading, Who’s Catching Up

A few companies have clearly taken the lead here. 

Unsurprisingly, Google and Samsung sit at the top of the Android updates ladder. Apple, meanwhile, has a long-time record of offering updates as part of its ecosystem rather than an annual thing. 

The improving brands in this space are OnePlus, Xiaomi, Honor, Motorola, Oppo, and Vivo, all of which have started being clear on the kind and level of support their phones will get, depending on budget. 

As is obvious, budget phones get shorter support. But things have improved as pressure is building from both consumers and rival brands. 

So, Is Five Years the New Standard?

In practice, yes, at least for midrange and flagship phones.

At the very least, five years of updates is becoming the bare minimum for users. The bar is even higher for flagship phones, as brands are already committing to 7 years of updates. 

However, this is still not universal. Many budget phones still offer only two or three years of support, and even then, brands do not always push timely updates. What we can say for sure is that OS updates are now a legal requirement, chipmakers are enabling longer support, and competitors are raising the bar. So it’s hard to see things go backward from here.

The MC03, from Swiss phone maker Punkt, runs AphyOS, the company’s custom software built on the Android Open Source Project. It removes Google services and background tracking, focusing instead on giving users tighter control over permissions and network access.

Punkt also bundles privacy-focused tools like a VPN and optional Proton services for email and cloud storage. These extras are included for the first year, after which a paid subscription is required. Without it, the phone still functions, but updates and some features are limited.

Specs-wise, this is clearly a mid-range device. The MC03 comes with a 6.67-inch AMOLED display with a 120Hz refresh rate, paired with MediaTek’s Dimensity 7300 chip and 8GB of RAM. It should be more than enough for everyday use, though it’s not trying to compete with flagship phones. The camera setup includes a 64MP main camera, an ultra-wide lens, and a 32MP selfie camera, which again points to practicality rather than headline-grabbing hardware.

One feature that immediately stands out is the removable battery, something that has almost disappeared from modern smartphones. The battery is said to be around 5,200mAh and supports both wired and wireless charging. The phone is also built to handle rougher conditions, with IP68 water and dust resistance and a relatively hefty 240g weight.

Pricing and availability:

Punkt is pricing the MC03 at €699, with European deliveries expected later this month and North American availability planned for spring. It’s not a phone for everyone, but for users tired of data-heavy ecosystems and sealed designs, the MC03 offers a rare alternative in today’s smartphone market.

Samsung follows a similar strategy to Apple. The Galaxy Tab S11 Ultra also uses a quad-speaker setup, but this time, the speakers are tuned by AKG and come with Dolby Atmos support. 

As a result, you can expect clean vocals and a good sense of separation, especially if you tweak things through Samsung’s audio presets and EQ.

Pair the audio with a massive 14.6-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X screen, and the Tab S11 Ultra feels like a straightforward alternative to the iPad Pro for people living inside the Samsung ecosystem. It’s just a solid multimedia machine that also happens to handle multitasking well.

There’s nothing flashy about how the speakers are presented, but they’re consistently good, and that’s often enough.

Lenovo Tab Plus

This is where things start to look different.

The Lenovo Tab Plus makes a trade-off most tablet makers avoid—it gives up slimness for better sound. 

Lenovo Tab Plus has a unique, thick bump on the back which houses an enormous (by tablet standards) eight-speaker JBL-tuned system. And its specs alone sound ambitious.

It has four matrix tweeters and four force-balanced woofers delivering 26W of stereo power from a large 22cc speaker box. As one can expect, the setup delivers a whole different kind of audio experience. 

The sheer number of drivers and the large acoustic volume mean it can push out sound with significant volume and minimal distortion, even when pushed close to the limit. 

The compromise is the design. That speaker hump is noticeable, but Lenovo has thoughtfully placed a kickstand in it. As a result, you can place it on a surface level and enjoy your shows and movies without the worry of holding its heft. 

Xiaomi Pad 7

The Pad 7 from Xiaomi is another entry on our list of best-sounding tablets. It is equipped with four speakers, Dolby Atmos support, and Hi-Res Audio certification. For most people, that means solid clarity, decent stereo width, and enough volume for daily use.

There’s also a “200% volume mode” that boosts loudness well beyond the default limit. You might rarely need to use it, but it’s there if you need it.

As a side note, the China-only Pad 7 Ultra steps things up with four woofers and four tweeters, but since you probably can’t buy it easily outside China, the regular Pad 7 is the more practical option to talk about.

OnePlus Pad 3

The OnePlus Pad 3 is a great device for multimedia consumers. It has a big 13.2-inch display at 3.4K resolution, 144Hz refresh rate, and brightness goes high enough for outdoor viewing. 

But the speakers are what keep it in this conversation. Like some of the others here, OnePlus uses eight drivers—four tweeters and four woofers—to create a clean, well-balanced stereo image. It doesn’t try to overdo bass, but the mix has enough weight to make movies more interesting.

It also has a big 12,140 mAh battery and 80W fast charging support, so you can binge-watch without worrying about running out of power.

Honorable mention

Google Pixel Tablet with Speaker Dock

The Pixel Tablet is an interesting case of turning a tablet into a multimedia machine. The tablet itself has quad speakers, but what makes it unique is the optional speaker-dock accessory.

The dock features a 43.5mm full-range speaker that delivers noticeably better, room-filling sound with crisp treble and richer bass. 

When docked and locked, the tablet automatically switches into “Hub Mode,” which makes it more than just a tablet. You can display Google Photos albums as a screensaver when it’s not in active use.

It also provides full access to Assistant for playing music or videos, controlling smart home devices, and getting information through voice commands. 

The Pixel Tablet is also the first tablet to act as a Chromecast receiver, so you can cast music and videos from your phone or other devices directly to the docked tablet’s screen and speaker.

However, its main downside is longevity. The Pixel Tablet was launched in 2023, and the company hasn’t released a successor yet. It’s only guaranteed to receive Android version updates until at least June 2026 and security updates until at least June 2028. So you have to keep that in mind.

Xiaomi has greatly improved its software update policy in recent years. It had long offered a maximum of three Android OS updates to its devices, which extended to four in late 2023, starting with the Xiaomi 13T series. The update policy was once again upgraded earlier this year to offer up to five major Android updates to select devices.

We’ve prepared a list of Xiaomi devices that are covered under this updated software policy, which promises five generations of Android updates. Review the list below to find out if your Xiaomi device is eligible for long-term OS updates.

These Xiaomi devices will get five major Android OS updates

• Xiaomi 15T Pro (last update: Android 20)
• Redmi Pad 2 Pro (last update: Android 20)
• Redmi Pad 2 (last update: Android 20)
• Redmi Pad 2 4G (last update: Android 20)

The Redmi Pad 2 and Redmi Pad 2 4G were the company’s first phones to offer support for five major OS updates. The Redmi Pad 2 Pro and Xiaomi 15T Pro joined the list in September.

While Redmi Pad 2 Pro and Xiaomi 15T Pro users might find themselves lucky to be on the list, it’s disappointing that the devices launched in September 2025 with Android 15, not Android 16. That means all the devices on the above list will receive OS updates up to Android 20.

Only a few Xiaomi devices are currently covered under this new update policy. It’s likely that the majority, if not all, of upcoming high-end phones and tablets from the brand will also receive the same treat. Anyway, we’ll regularly update the list as and when more Xiaomi devices are announced, with a promise of five major Android updates.

With the latest software update policy, Xiaomi outperforms many of its competitors, including OnePlus, Vivo, and Realme, which are currently stuck with four Android updates, while matching Oppo and Motorola. Samsung and Google are currently leading the chart with seven years of both Android and security updates. Xiaomi will hopefully bridge the gap in the near future.

Google’s upcoming plan to tighten app sideloading on Android has raised eyebrows among users who value the platform’s flexibility. Starting in late 2026, the company will require developers to verify their identity with Google before apps can be installed on certified Android devices. Unverified apps, even when downloaded outside the Play Store, will simply be blocked.

What’s different this time is how Google plans to enforce it. Instead of relying on Play Protect, the new policy will be handled by a system app called Android Developer Verifier. Google hasn’t explained why it’s using a separate tool, but the change signals a more direct effort to cut down on malware-heavy APKs that often target less technical users. Google is changing how sideloading works on Android. Starting in 2026, only apps from verified developers will be allowed on certified Android devices. Developers distributing apps outside the Play Store must register through a new Android Developer Console and submit personal details such as name, address, and contact information. Google says this is needed because malware from sideloaded apps is 50 times higher compared to apps installed through the Play Store.

The new system will begin with early sign-ups in October 2025. It will open to all developers in March 2026, followed by enforcement in September 2026 across Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand. These countries are being targeted first due to high scam rates. A global rollout will follow in 2027. Hobbyists and students will have a separate, simplified process, but anonymity will no longer be possible. Devices not certified by Google will not be affected.

Why Google is Doing This

Google says the move is about accountability. By tying apps to verified developer identities, it becomes harder for bad actors to release malicious apps under new names after being banned. The company compares the process to an ID check at an airport. It does not inspect the app’s code but ensures that the person behind it is identifiable.

The policy is also part of a larger industry trend. Apple already requires developer identity checks in the European Union. Regulators and banking groups in the first rollout countries have backed Google’s decision, saying it will reduce scams. Android’s virtual RAM feature—called RAM Plus on Samsung, Extended RAM on vivo, or Memory Extension on Xiaomi—has sparked debate for years, with many users believing it occupies internal storage. A detailed Reddit post and recent findings bust this myth: virtual RAM, or zRam, doesn’t use storage by default, but confusion persists due to vague explanations from phone makers.

Virtual RAM, a staple on Android devices, is often misunderstood. The toggle to turn on the feature usually includes a disclaimer about storage use, like my iQOO Neo9 Pro says, “The RAM can be dynamically extended by up to 8GB. Some storage space will be taken up,” and my Xiaomi Poco X3 phone says, “Add 1GB of RAM by occupying storage. Use this feature only when there’s enough storage available on your device.”

This fuels the idea that this RAM extension feature sacrifices internal storage, but that’s not the full story, per a Reddit deep dive by PurelyOxified.

How it actually works:

The RAM extension feature relies on zRam, a kernel module that carves out a chunk of system RAM to store compressed data at around 2:1 ratio, squeezing more into less space. It doesn’t touch internal storage by default, despite what the settings menus claim. The catch? If zRam fills up, least-used data can spill into a swap file on storage, using minimal read/write to avoid wear. For example, enabling “8GB+8GB” Extended RAM on my Neo9 Pro occupied 2GB of storage space during the reboot. But it will only be used if zRam maxes out.

This explains why storage is still needed—and shows that manufacturers weren’t lying, just not telling the full story—yet it won’t constantly perform read/write operations. zRam’s trade-off is minor CPU overhead for compression.

Next time you toggle “Extended RAM” or “Memory extension” (or whatever your phone calls it), know that it’s boosting RAM efficiency—not stealing your storage—unless you push zRam to its limits.

Google is rolling out a new security trick for Android phones and tablets with the latest Google Play Services update. If your device stays locked for three days straight, it’ll automatically restart, and yes, it keeps your data extra safe. This feature, tucked into version 25.14, is all about making sure your info stays locked down, no matter where your device ends up.

A feature that reboots your Android phone or tablet after 72 hours of being locked

As noted in the changelog under Security & Privacy, “With this feature, your device automatically restarts if locked for 3 consecutive days.” It applies to both smartphones and tablets but skips other form factors like TVs and Wear OS devices, at least for now.

But how does it actually benefit? Well, a reboot puts your device into a Before First Unlock (BFU) state, where your data is encrypted and tough to crack until you unlock it for the first time. This processing load could also explain the brief lag you experience as you unlock the device after a reboot.

Your device does not accept biometric login methods like fingerprint or face unlock, which also adds an extra layer of security. Pixel users might notice the lockscreen nudge: “Unlock for all features and data.” It’s a bit like Apple’s Inactivity Reboot in iOS 18.1.

The best part? Since it’s through Play Services, most Android devices will get this feature, and they require neither a full OS update (since a significant portion of active Android devices are out of support) nor any action from the user.

Even if your device has reached its end-of-support, it may still get this new security feature, as it’s part of a Google Play Services update. Now, this feature can interfere with certain use cases, like always-on tablets. That’s why Google is making it optional—so users who need to can turn it off. The rollout is happening now, but it might take a few weeks to reach your device.

Google might be planning on kicking off the Android 16 beta program soon. The developer preview already went live nearly two months ago, and now, it appears that a Google employee may have revealed the release date for the Android 16 beta builds as well.

Android 16 Beta

The Search Engine giant officially confirmed the Android 16 beta will release the Android 16 beta in January 2025. This would be the first early build, with latter iterations planned to drop in February and March. Unfortunately, Google did not reveal the exact date for the Android 16 beta rollout. However, a comment from a Google employee was recently spotted by Android Authority on the Android Gerrit that may have confirmed the release date.

It seems like Google aims to kick off the Android 16 beta 3 on 12th March 2025. On the other hand, the first beta build did not get a set date of release. However, the employee did mention January 22 and February 19th, which could imply the first and second beta build of the Android 16. Since the beta 3 build is arriving in March, we can expect Google to launch the final build of Android 16 sometime in the second quarter of 2025.

So the stable update would likely arrive on Pixel devices around April or May, which is in line with our previous report. To recall, Android 16 is expected to offer a split screen mode inspired by the OxygenOS on OnePlus Open. This means you might be able to split three apps at the same time. There may also be support for improved WiFi security, Adaptive Refresh Rate (ARR), and much more.

Today Google has released an Android security update, which reportedly fixes 46 security vulnerabilities. It also includes a zero-day vulnerability.

For those unfamiliar, a zero-day vulnerability is a security flaw in software, hardware, or firmware that threat actors exploit before the vendor can identify and fix it. The term “zero-day” comes from the amount of time the vendor has to prepare a patch, which is zero days because the vulnerability has already been discovered or exploited.

Google released two batches of patches in the August security update to fix the vulnerabilities

This particular zero-day vulnerability (which is a use-after-free type vulnerability) marked as CVE-2024-36971 reportedly exists in the Linux kernel used by the Android system to manage network routing. Even though exploiting this vulnerability requires system-level execution privileges, Google pointed out in its security bulletin that there are signs that this zero-day vulnerability may be subject to limited, targeted attacks.

Once a bad actor has successfully exploited this vulnerability, he should be able to execute arbitrary code on unpatched devices without any input from the user. The zero-day vulnerability was discovered by Clément Lecigne, a security researcher at Google, in the Threat Analysis Group (TAG).

Google did not disclose the specific details of the vulnerability in order to give Android phone users enough time to update and repair their devices.

As mentioned before, there were 45 other vulnerabilities as well. To address all the vulnerabilities, Google released two batches of patches in the August security update, which are marked as 2024-08-01 and 2024-08-05. Notably, the second batch of patches includes fixes for third-party closed-source components and kernel components alongside all the fixes in the first batch. Therefore users are advised to install the patches once they are available. While Google’s Pixel devices get the updates quickly, it may take a while for other manufacturers to push the update to certain models.

By stealing login credentials, intercepting SMS messages, and taking device screenshots, BingoMod enables remote attackers to execute on-device fraud and drain victims’ bank accounts. To cover their tracks, the malware can remotely erase all device data, making recovery difficult.

Security experts urge Android users to exercise caution when clicking on links or downloading apps from unknown sources. Keeping devices and security software up-to-date is crucial in mitigating the risk of infection. Cross-device services enable simultaneous calls and password-free internet sharing across your devices

Cross-Device Services enable smooth data transfer between devices signed in with the same Google Account. According to images shared by 9to5Google, two new features are underway: Call Casting and Internet Sharing (Instant Hotspot).

Call Casting feature allows you to effortlessly cast an ongoing video call to another device and continue the call there. Currently, it’s only available for Google Meet calls, but we can expect support for more apps in the future. Let’s say you joined a video call on your phone, but you want to view it on your tablet since it has a bigger display. Instead of ending the call and rejoining on your tablet, you can simply cast the call with one tap.

Instant Hotspot makes sharing your internet connection easier. After adding your devices to the same Google Account, you can toggle the Instant Hotspot feature to share the internet without manually activating the hotspot on one device and entering the password on another. One tap will instantly share the internet connection without entering any password.

Google’s new Cross-Device Services are in beta and are being gradually released to devices. You can access it in Google Play Services version 24.28.34.

Fuchsia is an open-source operating system developed by Google that’s designed to be simple and secure. The company previously released versions of Fuchsia that can run on Pixel-branded Chromebooks and Google Nest Hub smart home devices.

Fuchsia is based on a custom kernel called Zircon, which is derived from the Little Kernel operating system. According to Google, Zircon is “composed of a kernel and a small set of userspace services, drivers, and libraries necessary for core system functions such as booting.”

Now the latest news is that Google is working on “Microfuchsia”, a cut-down version of the Fuchsia operating system, to run it on Android devices inside a virtual machine. Microfuchsia is reportedly designed to run in a virtual machine on devices like Nest Hub. The latest development is different because it’s now happening on Android.

Microfuchsia could be used to run certain functions in an isolated environment securely

There have been speculations that Fuchsia OS will replace Android in the future, which seems unlikely at this point. The company is testing the OS out in new and interesting places. One of them is developing a cut-down version of it, that will run within Android devices in a virtual machine.

Google reportedly has ambitious plans to ship Fuchsia OS on smartphones, PCs, and smart home devices. The company eventually released Fuchsia with the first generation Nest Hub in 2021. The second-generation Nest Hub also included the OS. While the latest development with Fuchsia is not about replacing Android, it could result in significant changes in some core functionalities of Android going forward. According to Google, Microfuchsia is designed to be used in virtualization solutions. Nonetheless, Google will likely implement Microfuchsia in Android only if it adds value or improves the end-user experience.

Google introduced pKVM, a hypervisor for the Android Virtualization Framework (AVF), in Android 13 on select devices. The Android Virtualization Framework and pKVM are designed to run certain types of workloads in an isolated environment securely. Chris Patrick, SVP and General Manager of Handsets at Qualcomm, told Android Authority that Qualcomm has been working with Google and Android manufacturers to change how updates are done. They have been improving the code structure to make updates smoother and easier.

These changes should help brands keep their devices updated with the latest software more easily. Qualcomm will announce something later this year to make this process even better.

Chris Patrick didn’t say exactly when or where this announcement will happen, but it might be at the Snapdragon Summit 2024 in October. This event will also likely introduce the Snapdragon 8 Gen 4 chip, which will be used in high-end Android phones like the Galaxy S25 series.

In the past, brands like Samsung gave only a couple of major Android OS updates for their high-end phones, and fewer updates for mid-range and low-end devices. Some phones didn’t get any major updates at all. But Samsung started to improve by offering three major updates. Later, they announced that high-end and some mid-range devices would get four major updates and five years of security updates.

Last year, Google said it would provide Android OS and security updates to Pixel devices for seven years. This was a big deal because even Apple doesn’t promise updates for that long for iPhones and iPads. A few months later, Samsung said it would also offer seven major updates for its high-end phones and tablets, starting with the Galaxy S24.

Google Phone is getting a strange update that might leave you scratching your head. A beta version of the app spotted by 9to5Google reveals plans to add “Audio Emojis” which are essentially sound effects users can play during calls.

These “Audio Emojis” come in six flavors: clapping, laughter, crying (represented by a trombone sound), celebratory noises, a drum sting, and yes, even a fart sound. You can access these buttons during a call through the overflow menu or a small flag at the bottom of the screen.

It’s hard to say if the feature will be really useful. While the immature side finds the fart button tempting (but only with a trusted friend!), genuine reactions are preferable. We can only question the long-term usefulness of the feature beyond a novelty.

A great improvement would be user-uploaded sounds, pre-recorded messages, and text-to-speech options. This might be a playful experiment by Google and it might not evolve much further. However, users will be urged to avoid spamming loved ones with sound effects, unless the goal is to get off the phone quickly. Google continues the preview phase of Android 15 with the release of Developer Preview 2 (DP2). It builds on the initial preview launch last month, but like its predecessor, the version remains firmly aimed at developers preparing apps for the new operating system. A public beta release is expected in April.

Android 15 Developer Preview 2: What’s New?

The big change in Android 15 DP2 is its support for satellite connectivity at the operating system level. The OS now has UI elements designed into it to ensure a consistent user experience for devices connected to satellites. 

Apps can also detect if a device is using a satellite network and adjust its functionality accordingly. Core messaging services like SMS/MMS and pre-installed RCS apps can also utilize satellite connections for communication.

Additionally, Android 15 DP2 makes handling PDFs within applications easier. Developers can now include rendering for password-protected PDFs, annotations, and in-document search, editing, and selection capabilities. 

The PDF renderer updates will come via Google Play system updates and won’t depend on major Android releases. Google also says that the local PDF viewing experience should be faster and use fewer resources in Android 15. 

The other notable improvements in Developer Preview 2 include a smoother NFC payment experience and refinements in automatic language switching for audio recognition.  

Developers also now can customize how their app appears on the smaller cover screen of flip-style foldable phones.  Google says “these screens are too small to be considered as compatible targets for Android apps to run on,” but they’re still giving option to developers.

Moreover, Android 15 can also detect if an app is being recorded to enhance user privacy. For improved audio experiences, Google is introducing a new loudness standard that should mitigate inconsistencies when switching between various audio contents. 

Last but not least, there is further customization in the Do Not Disturb mode, allowing users to prioritize specific rules and trigger actions such as a black-and-white display, night mode, and wallpaper dimming.

Google‘s relentless pace of software updates continues! Hot on the heels of this week’s Pixel Feature Drop, the company has already launched Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 for eligible Pixel devices (Pixel 5a and newer). 

The newest beta should squash several bugs from last month’s release, but early reports suggest it comes with a major caveat.

Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 addresses some frustrating hiccups from the initial QPR3 beta. This includes device crashes during specific events like app updates or switching users, displays failing to wake after a reboot, always-on display malfunctions, and the disappearance of battery status information. Additionally, backup and restore processes should now function as intended.

Android 14 QPR 3 Beta 2 is bricking Pixel phones

Unfortunately, it looks like these fixes come with a serious risk. Multiple sources, including 9to5Google, have reported that sideloading Android 14 QPR3 Beta 2 can soft-brick Pixel devices, meaning they cannot fully boot. 

Even Google’s upcoming flagship, the Pixel 8 Pro, and the foldable Pixel Fold aren’t immune to this issue.

While the temptation to get those bug fixes immediately might be strong, it’s better to hold off on sideloading for now. 

The OTA (over-the-air) update appears to work without encountering the bricking issue. If you absolutely must sideload, AndroidPolice’s report suggests that users should make sure the ‘OEM Unlock’ option is enabled in the device’s developer settings as a precaution.

But for now, it seems best to avoid sideloading, particularly if you rely on your Pixel phone as your primary device.

The first developer preview version of Android 15 has been released today, featuring minor privacy improvements and new features. As it is specifically designed for developers, it may not be suitable for daily driving so better wait for a little if you want to try it on your Pixel device. Google announced they might release the public beta version between March and April.

Android 15 will allow you to have more control over the ads you see in a more detailed manner. A new menu named “Ads” has been added under the “Privacy & security” section in settings, where you can check which apps are tracking your activity on your phone to show ads.

Some apps can provide personalized ads by tracking your activity on your phone. With the FLEDGE API in Android 15, you can now prevent apps from tracking you. This doesn’t mean that the ads on your device will be completely removed, but it ensures that your data will not be shared with the chosen 3rd party app.

Another new feature in Android 15 is the ability to perform partial screen recording. Instead of recording or casting the entire screen while screen recording, you can now record only a specific part of the app. This can be useful for users who frequently record their phone screen or have to cast their phone screen during a video call.

Another welcomed improvement is that Google is finally working on a better camera optimization for 3rd party apps. Images captured in a low-light environment will now be processed in real-time, giving you a simultaneous bright preview, just like it appears after tapping the shutter button. 3rd party apps can also benefit from improved preview images.

Pixel 5 series won’t get Android 15 update

The bad news is that the Android 15 Developer Preview is currently only available for the Pixel 6 series and newer Pixels. This means that the software support for devices in the Pixel 5 series has officially ended. Additionally, while notification channels can be easily found in the default settings of Android, in One UI 6.1, users need to navigate deeper into the interface to locate the setting. For this reason, some users believe that Samsung’s decision to make this change has adversely affected the fundamental functionality of Android. However, rest assured, opening the notification channels feature is not too difficult. To activate notification channels in One UI 6.1, just follow these steps:

The shift from physical SIM cards to eSIMs is gradually gaining momentum. eSIMs, which are integrated into your device, offer potential security advantages.

Nevertheless, moving eSIM profiles between devices can still be a bit of a hassle, often requiring carrier assistance or new SIMs. A recent development involving Samsung and Pixel devices hints at a simpler approach.

Acknowledging the issue, Google announced a solution at last year’s Mobile World Congress—a new eSIM transfer tool for Android.

The tool will allow users to securely and quickly move their mobile plans to new devices without the need for physical SIMs. 

Although Google didn’t provide specifics or a launch date, users setting up their Pixel 8 devices noticed its practical implementation as early as October last year. Looks like the tool have now started becoming more widely available. 

Recently, a user setting up their brand-new Galaxy S24 Ultra using Samsung’s SIM transfer tool encountered a new eSIM transfer option during the setup process.

According to the user, a pop-up appeared on their nearby LG V60 ThinQ, allowing them to transfer their SIM to the Galaxy S24 Ultra by scanning a QR code.

Samsung had previously introduced its own eSIM transfer tool within One UI 5.1, but it was limited only to Galaxy devices. The recent development, however, suggests that the eSIM transfer feature for Android is getting wider compatibility across brands and models in the future.

While there are no reports from other brands using this feature, it’s not surprising that Samsung is among the first to adopt it. After all, Samsung and Google have been building a strong partnership recently.

However, it’s important to note that, at present, T-Mobile is the only carrier confirmed to support this eSIM transfer functionality in the US. Although the growing interest suggests wider adoption by other carriers may be on the horizon, it’s still too early to confirm definitively.

Google‘s Pixel phones have now started receiving the Android 14 QPR 2 Beta 3.1 update with a wave of bug fixes. This follows the major update released two weeks ago, which introduced a bunch of new features and a revamped UI.

The latest update, codenamed AP11.231215.009, comes with the January 2024 security patch and is available for all Pixel phones from the 5a to the latest Pixel 8 Pro, including the Pixel Tablet and Fold. The update is a relatively small download, clocking in at around 122MB.

While this update won’t bring any flashy new features, it focuses on ironing out wrinkles in the Android 14 beta experience. Google has addressed a range of issues, including problems with fingerprint unlocking, app icon placement, and overlay glitches. Below is the complete changelog of fixes:

- Fixed an issue for foldable devices where the launcher was sometimes empty if the device was locked while unfolded and then unlocked after the device was folded.
- Fixed an issue for foldable devices where, after folding or unfolding the device and then launching a pair of apps that were already open in split-screen mode, the app divider stopped responding to touch controls.
- Fixed an issue for foldable devices where the screen sometimes flickered when unfolding the device.
- Fixed an issue for tablet devices that sometimes caused a gray screen to briefly flash when dismissing some on screen activities.
- Fixed an issue for tablet devices that caused the touch targets for taskbar icons and navigation buttons to be smaller than usual.
- Fixed various issues that were impacting system stability, performance, connectivity, camera, and accessibility.

If you’re a Pixel owner enrolled in the Beta program, you should receive the update automatically over the air within the next few days. You can also check for it manually by heading to Settings > System > System updates.

However, keep in mind that this is still a beta program, meaning you might encounter some bugs here and there. If stability is your top priority, it’s best to wait for the official Android 14 release.

One of the most useful features for me is the ability to “select all” while deleting unnecessary e-mails. Nowadays, every platform sends you e-mails on a daily basis.

Even when a friend sends you a direct message on Twitter, you receive an e-mail about it. Because of these kinds of spams dealing with these notifications can be overwhelming, making the ‘select all’ function a lifesaver. However, although this feature has been available on iPhones for a long time, it wasn’t present in the Android Gmail application until recently.

It seems that Google has finally listened to its users after a long time and finished developing the mentioned feature. The feature, which is not yet available on every phone, is expected to be accessible to everyone through updates shortly. However, it’s important to note that it’s not a method you can use to select all emails for deletion. It only allows you to select and delete 50 emails on the page. If you want to delete all of them, here are the steps you need to follow:

Computer:

• Sign in to Gmail.
• Click on the checkbox below the search box in the upper left corner.
• A warning message saying “Select all x conversations” will appear. Click on this warning message to select all emails.
• Click on the “Delete” button at the top.

Mobile:

• Open the Gmail app.
• Open your inbox.
• Tap on the three dots in the upper left corner.
• Tap on “Select all”.
• Tap on the “Delete” button at the top.

By performing these steps, all emails in your inbox will be deleted. The deleted emails will be kept in your trash for 30 days and will be permanently deleted after that time.

But the tide may be turning, as evidence suggests Android 15 could bring this much-desired feature.

Android Authority and Google News Telegram editor Nail Sadykov stumbled upon a hidden “battery health” screen in the Android 14 QPR2 beta 2 update released recently. 

While currently inactive, code analysis revealed that it will show the “estimated percentage of charge the battery can currently hold compared to when it was new.” In simple words, it’s the same battery health percentage feature as in iPhones.

While the availability of this feature remains a mystery, Android Authority suggests that it could arrive in Android 15, possibly as a Pixel exclusive initially. However, there’s always a chance of abandonment, though Google’s recent efforts suggest otherwise.

The latest Pixel Feature Drop already introduced a “battery information” screen, revealing the battery’s cycle count and manufacture date. Moreover, Android 14 empowered third-party developers with battery APIs, enabling apps to estimate battery health. These steps seem to pave the way for a native battery health screen.

The benefits of such a feature are undeniable, especially for those holding onto their phones for longer. Google also announced seven years of updates for the Pixel 8 lineup, so the battery health monitoring feature will come in handy for new Pixel owners.

Google‘s Android 14 journey continues with the rollout of Beta 2 for its latest Quarterly Platform Release (QPR2). Arriving earlier than expected, this update brings stability improvements and fixes a few bugs plaguing on the Pixel phones and the Pixel Fold.

Android 14 QPR2 Beta 2 update is now live!

Following the December release of QPR1, the usual preview program for QPR2 and the Pixel Feature Drop was expected to kick off this month. But Google surprised everyone by launching the program earlier, starting with a November preview followed by a quick patch release.

While technically betas, QPRs are considered relatively stable and suitable for daily use. Beta 2 arrives on all Pixel models from the 5a to the 8 Pro, sporting the build number AP11.231117.006. It also packs the latest December security patch.

The Beta 2 comes with a few fixes! Here’s what’s been addressed:

• Fixed an issue where battery usage information that was reported in system settings was sometimes incorrect. (Issue #312121998)
• Fixed an issue where the fingerprint icon on the lock screen would sometimes display before other information had loaded in always-on display mode. (Issue #311265905)
• Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the biometric prompt to crash, causing it to be dismissed before a user could interact with it.
• Fixed an issue that sometimes caused the Internet Quick Settings tile to indicate that there was no Wi-Fi connection, even when the device was connected to a Wi-Fi network.

To download the latest QPR 2 Beta 2 update, simply head to Settings > System > Software updates and tap “System update.” If it’s available for your device, the download will begin automatically.

Swedish game developer Coffee Stain Studios has brought back the quirky chaos with Goat Simulator 3, now available on iOS and Android platforms. This game, known for its unique blend of humor and destruction, allows players to embody a mischievous goat causing havoc in an open-world setting. The game’s appeal lies in its absurdity – from supercharged headbutts to outlandish accessories like jetpacks and rocket launchers.

Goat Simulator 3’s mobile version matches the features of its counterparts on PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC, including the much-loved co-op multiplayer support. Originally emerging as a humorous demo in 2014’s Global Game Jam, Goat Simulator’s alpha version unexpectedly won hearts with its buggy gameplay and eccentric concept. Embracing its imperfections, Coffee Stain Studios released it as a full game, keeping its quirky bugs as a unique feature.

Interestingly, Goat Simulator 3, despite its name, is actually the second release in the series, arriving eight years after the original. The OnePlus 12 was launched in China this week, but the hype and sentiment for the device within the tech circles of Chinese social media has been rather weak, despite the device sporting upgraded internals over last year’s OnePlus 11.

As one Chinese influencer pointed out, the hype for the OnePlus 12 was rather high in China right before the launch event, with many Chinese OnePlus fans hoping that the OnePlus 12 would start at 3298 CNY (competing with the Redmi K70 Pro). But when it was officially revealed that the OnePlus 12 would start at 4299 CNY (602 USD) for the base model, fans were sceptical about whether the OnePlus 12 was still worth the purchase despite the price hike. 

To contextualise the matter, 4299 is a nearly 10% price hike from the OnePlus 11 at 3999 CNY, and since the OnePlus 11 256GB is 799 USD in the global market, the OnePlus 12 is expected to launch at 859 USD onwards when it comes to global markets in January 2024.

To add salt to the wound, the starting price of the OnePlus 12 is also the most expensive out of all the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 flagships launched so far. Here is a table to show OnePlus’ pricing against its competitors such as Xiaomi, iQOO and Meizu.
