But after about the same 800 cycles, batteries charged at 65W can retain approximately 91% of their original capacity.

So, you get a solid performance that means noticeably longer lifespan and less capacity loss after two years of typical use. On the other hand, phones that support faster charging speeds, like 200W charging, show faster degradation. Evidence suggests these batteries can fall to around 80% capacity after just 800 cycles, which aligns with the minimum baseline for acceptable battery health, but it hits this mark much earlier than models with 65W charging support.

What These Percentages Mean in Real Use

When we talk about 80% vs 91 % capacity after two years, the difference is more than just a number on paper:

• 80% Battery Capacity: You’ll likely notice shorter screen-on time, faster drainage during heavy use, and more frequent mid-day charging. The battery feels more tired, especially after a couple of years.
• 91% Battery Capacity: The battery still feels closer to “new,” retains longer endurance, and delivers steadier performance throughout the day.

In practical terms, a device with 200W charging might need battery health conservation strategies earlier. This could include limited full charges, enabling optimized charging, or reducing high-watt charging use.

Why Faster Charging Affects Battery Health

It might seem counterintuitive that faster charging could be worse for battery health, but the mechanisms are rooted in electrochemistry:

• Heat: Ultra-fast charging creates more heat inside the battery during the charge process. Heat is one of the main accelerators of battery ageing, which speeds up internal chemical reactions that degrade the electrode materials over time.
• Charge Stress: Charging at higher wattages pushes more current into the battery at once. This can increase stress on the lithium-ion cells, leading to faster capacity loss across many cycles.

Interestingly, real-world testing has shown that in some cases, a 150W charging implementation (like OPPO’s) can outlast an even faster 240W solution. In some scenarios, it even managed to achieve up to double the cycle life (approx 1,600 cycles) before reaching similar degradation levels. This highlights how fast charging is implemented (software control, cell chemistry, thermal design) matters as much as the wattage itself.

Should You Avoid Fast Charging?

Ultra-fast charging isn’t inherently bad. In fact, it’s extremely convenient, especially if your lifestyle demands quick top-ups between meetings or when you’re travelling. Considering the massive upgrades in battery tech in recent years, these devices have also retained good battery capacities even after a few years. Faster charging does accelerate capacity loss compared to more moderate speeds, so here’s how you can balance conveniencewith longevity:

• Use standard charging (like 30–65W) for overnight/top-off charging.
• Reserve super fast charging for when you really need speed.
• Enable battery care features and Super OTA battery management options if available.
• Avoid extreme thermal environments (like charging in hot cars or under direct sunlight)

These blazing fast charging rates stem from innovations made by significant investments in research and development. This is not only to improve battery efficiency but also to improve charging rates without compromising on safety or battery health.

The Old Excuse

As of right now, Samsung and Apple offer maximum charging speeds of around 45W. While this isn’t as terrible as it used to be, it used to be much slower before. But these still pale in comparison to the triple digit wattage offered by the Chinese competitors.

In the past, both brands have adopted a cautious stance regarding charging technology. They have a conservative approach, claiming an emphasis on maintaining battery health. Back in the day, this excuse made sense as the technology was unproven, immature, and not fully trusted. But Chinese smartphone manufacturers aren’t simply brute forcing the fast charging speeds anymore.

How Chinese Brands innovate in fast charging

There are plenty of ways that brands like Realme, Oppo, Xiaomi, and others improve fast charging. One of the best examples of this is the dual cell system. These companies found that charging two cells under the hood can boost the speed at which a device charges. The Xiaomi 13 Pro with a single cell managed to max out at 120W wired fast charging, while the iQOO 11 Pro was unveiled with 200W fast charging via dual cells. So charging two cells helps improve the charging rate without compromising the health of the battery.

In other words, the Chinese companies have basically addressed most of these issues, which Apple or Samsung could “reinvent” or “innovate” on. Many had initially criticized OnePlus for its bulky charging adapters that looked like a brick. But this brick actually helped keep the smartphone cool during fast charging. The new silicone-carbon anode batteries shipping in the new flagship phone also allow for higher battery capacity without an increase in battery size. Apple and Samsung are basically running out of reasons to not improve in this area.

What’s in the Box?

The DeperAI Superpower 65W Pro adapter arrives in a minimalist box, keeping the contents straightforward. Inside, you’ll find the adapter itself, secured with a simple protective covering, a USB Type C-C cable, and a user manual.

Build Quality

The fast charger has a solid build that feels both durable and premium. It features a matte finish on the top, which not only enhances its appearance but also helps to resist smudges and fingerprints. This compact adapter measures 4.16 x 6.37 x 2.94 cm and weighs 226.8 grams, making it easy to carry around in pockets, bags.

The adapter has three ports, each carefully positioned for easy access. The USB-C ports are stacked vertically on one side, with USB-C1 located at the top and USB-C2 directly below it. Each of these USB-C ports can deliver up to 65W individually. Specifically, both ports support multiple output levels: 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, 15V/3A, and 20V/3.25A. The positioning of these ports is practical, enabling users to connect cables without any obstruction.

The USB-A port is positioned below the USB-C ports. It supports outputs of 5V/3A, 9V/3A, 12V/3A, and 20V/1.8A, delivering a maximum output of 36W. The ports are tightly secured within the adapter’s body, preventing any wobbling during use. This ensures a reliable connection, even when multiple devices are being charged simultaneously.

The adapter is capable of supporting simultaneous charging with various output configurations. When using both USB-C ports, the output is distributed as 45W + 20W. If a device is connected to USB-C1 and the USB-A port, the output is 45W + 18W. When connecting USB-C2 and the USB-A port, the adapter delivers up to 15W. Additionally, if all three ports are in use, it intelligently distributes power at 45W + 15W, ensuring efficient charging for all connected devices.

The adapter’s plug is sturdy, providing a firm grip when inserted into wall sockets. This reduces the risk of accidental disconnections. It supports an input voltage range of 100-240V at 50/60Hz, which makes it compatible with international voltage standards, making it suitable for travelers.

While GaN technology is known for improved thermal management, the DeperAI Superpower 65W Pro can get slightly warm during high-speed charging, particularly when powering multiple high-demand devices. However, the temperature remains well within safe limits, ensuring both the adapter’s safety and performance.

The Superpower 65W Pro is packed with features that cater to a wide range of devices. Here’s a closer look at what it offers:

GaN III Technology: GaN (Gallium Nitride) technology is at the core of this adapter. GaN chargers are known for their high efficiency and compact design. Compared to traditional silicon-based chargers, GaN allows for better energy conversion, reducing heat generation and improving charging speed. It’s a major reason why this adapter can deliver up to 65W of power in such a small form factor.

UFCS (Universal Fusion Fast Charging): This is one of the standout features of the adapter. UFCS ensures compatibility with both iOS and Android devices, making it an ideal choice for users who switch between ecosystems or have multiple devices. It supports fast charging for devices across different brands, whether it’s an iPhone, a Samsung Galaxy, or a Xiaomi device.

Multiport Output Protocols: The adapter supports a wide range of charging protocols, including PD3.1, QC5/QC4+, SCP, FCP, and many others. This means it can charge everything from laptops to smartphones and even accessories like the Nintendo Switch and Steam Deck. The power distribution between the ports is managed intelligently, when using all three ports, the charger splits the power efficiently to minimize charging time.

Performance

When it comes to performance, the DeperAI 65W Pro lives up to its claims. As per the company, it can charge an iPhone from 0% to 80% in just 30 minutes, making it one of the fastest chargers in this segment. I tested the charger with a Xiaomi Mi 11x, Macbook Pro, and iPhone 13 simultaneously, and the results were impressive. The charger managed to provide a consistent power output, delivering up to 45W for the laptop while still charging the two phones at decent speeds.

While the charger handles multi-device charging well, it’s worth mentioning that it performs best when charging one or two devices. With all three ports active, the charging speed slightly drops, but it still manages to deliver efficient charging without major delays.

The thermal performance is generally good, although, as mentioned earlier, it does get warm during extended use. The charger also comes with a lot of safety features, including overvoltage and surge protection. The Type-C charging cable is also good and sturdy, however, I wouldn’t say I liked its design much.

Verdict

The DeperAI Superpower 65W Pro adapter is a versatile and well-designed charging solution. It’s compact, efficient, and offers a good range of safety features, making it suitable for home, office, and travel use.

The inclusion of GaN technology, along with support for UFCS and various other protocols, ensures compatibility across a wide range of devices. While the adapter does get a bit warm during heavy use, it’s not a dealbreaker considering the fast charging capabilities it offers. However, the unboxing experience could be improved with better overall packaging.

OPPO is reportedly working on a new fast-charging solution that could match the 300W charging tech announced by Redmi back in February. According to DigitalChatStation, a reliable tipster, the new solution is still in development and will be paired with a 4,450mAh battery (4,600mAh battery typical). If launched, this new SuperVOOC solution will be the fastest smartphone charger in the market, alongside Redmi’s 300W Immortal Second Charger.

Fast charging technology is not just about the speed of charging but also about how efficiently it regulates heat and manages current. OPPO’s SuperVOOC solution is expected to retain the same speed at least until the battery reaches 80 percent, unlike Redmi’s 300W charging solution that could only touch 290W for about 3 seconds. While the new SuperVOOC solution’s release date is yet to be announced, it is expected to break covers before the end of this year.

Currently, the fastest commercially available phone in the world is the Realme GT 3, which boasts a 240W charging rate. However, Infinix recently launched a new 260W All-Round FastCharge charging system, which is currently the second-fastest in the market. After launching the Realme GT Neo 3 smartphone earlier this year, the OPPO-backed company is gearing up to launch its successor in the form of the Realme GT Neo 5 series — GT Neo 5 and GT Neo 5T, skipping the 4 number as per China’s custom.

Now, ahead of the official launch of the new Realme GT Neo 5 series smartphones, battery specifications and charging capabilities of the two versions of the phones have leaked online.

A well-known tipster Digital Chat Station has revealed that the upcoming Realme GT Neo 5 smartphone will come in two variants based on the battery and charging capacity. The BLP985 is a 5,000mAh battery with support for 150W fast charging, while the BLP987 is a 4,600mAh battery having support for a massive 240W fast charging technology.

Additionally, it is also reported that the Realme GT Neo 5 series will come with Sony IMX890 primary camera sensor with support for Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) and is claimed to offer better performance than the Realme GT Neo 3 series. It will have a triple-camera setup on the back and either 16MP or 32MP front-facing snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

Based on the leaks and reports so far, the smartphone is expected to feature a 6.5-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display with support for a 120Hz refresh rate. Earlier today (29th September 2022), the China Communications Standards Association and others jointly announced a new standard for Universal Fast Charging in the country. A number of brands have also hopped on board, so here are the details.

The China Communications Standards Association has just released the first batch of 11 fast charging certifications. With this announcement, a number of Chinese smartphone makers have passed these certifications. This includes known names like Huawei, Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi as well. The new standard for universal fast charging was established to promote the development of the fast charging technology in terms of five major aspects:

• To continue the improvement of fast charging solution and expanding its support  for various applications.
• Promote the transformation of fast charging group standards into a singular universal standards that will be valid on an industry scale.
• This will also help track the progress of international fast charging standardization and even bring the Chinese group standards to the international standards level to bring China as the global standard for fast charging solutions.
• Help promote more firms to adopt a unified fast charging standard.
• And lastly, it will also help improve the third party certification and identification.

The new standard is called UFCS or the Universal Fast Charging Specification. This will soon be adopted by various smartphone manufacturers soon, with the aforementioned brands already being on board. One of the first new certifications introduced is for the 40W maximum power output for the first stage, with the second stage reaching the 65W charging mark. This is still not high as some of the fast charging options offered on some high end phones, but we can expect the standards to have these certifications soon.

Xiaomi is all set to launch its latest smartphone lineup tomorrow, i.e., on the 24th May in its home country China — Redmi Note 11T series. The lineup will include three phones — Redmi Note 11T, 11T Pro, and 11T Pro+.

Now, just a day before the official launch, the company has shared a new teaser poster revealing some key details about the phone’s battery and charging capabilities.

The company has confirmed that the top-end model in the upcoming series, Redmi Note 11T Pro+, will come packed with the self-developed Surging P1 chip for the fast charging technology, and the device will also support 120W fast charging.

It also claims that the smartphone will focus more on battery health and come with special optimizations. It will support charging even at a low temperature of -10°C and feature a USB Type-C port with platinum coating for corrosion resistance.

Xiaomi has also revealed that the Redmi Note 11T series smartphones will come IP53 rating, making them splash and dust resistant. There will be reinforced protection at the four corners and will have a Gorilla Glass protection for the screen.

The Redmi Note 11T Pro+ will feature a 6.6-inch 144 Hz FHD+ IPS LCD display with industry-leading LTPS technology, a 20.5:9 screen aspect ratio, and DC dimming support. It has been confirmed MediaTek’s Dimensity 8100 5G chipset, which is manufactured by TSMC on their power-efficient 4nm nodes.

It will come with a triple camera setup on the back, consisting of Samsung’s 64MP ISOCELL GW1 primary sensor that features a 1/1.72 sensor size to let more light in and 1.6μm pixel pitch numbers to improve low-light night shots.

We are exactly a week away from Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2022. The trade show will kickstart on February 28. On the very same day, Realme will be holding its press conference to announce its latest flagship smartphone, Realme GT2 Pro, for international markets. Today, the brand has revealed that it will be also unveiling a new charging technology at this event.

In a press release sent to the media, Realme has revealed its plans to launch the ‘world’s fastest smartphone charging technology’ on February 28. Unfortunately, the brand hasn’t shared any details on this tech, except that under the go premium strategy, it will invest 70% of its R&D resources in innovation and charging technology.

Nonetheless, the company does hint that the new tech will be faster than its older 125W charging technology. But to know how fast, we will have to wait for a week.

According to rumors, realme will be debuting a 150W fast smartphone charging technology. Renowned tipster Digital Chat Station says that this tech is a rebadged version of OPPO’s upcoming 160W fast smartphone charging technology but at 10W slower. Despite being slightly slower, it will use the same charger.

We are not sure why Realme is calling its forthcoming 150W smartphone charging technology is ‘world’s fastest’ when Xiaomi had already debuted a 200W charging solution last year, which can fill a 4,000mAh battery in 8 minutes.

According to the tipster, the company is currently working on pushing the boundaries of fast charging technology. With 120W fast charging, the Redmi K50 Gaming Edition can charge in just 17 minutes, so 150W would likely offer even shorter charge times. Digital Chat Station adds that the Chinese tech giant has already prepared a fast charging solution faster than 120W, which is almost ready for mass production as well. Google has already unveiled the next-generation Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro flagship smartphones and has confirmed that the devices will get launched in the fall this year, without revealing the exact timeframe.

The Google Pixel 6 Pro has passed through Taiwan’s regulatory body National Communications Commission (NCC) and it reveals that the phone will support these charging speeds — 5V/3A (15W), 9V/2A (18W), 9V/3A (27W), and 11V/3A (33W). This was first reported by XDA-Developers.

This new report is in line with the previous report which claimed that the Pixel 6 series smartphone will have a top charging speed of 33W. This is a significant improvement in the charging speed compared to the previous generation models which were limited to 18W.

Google has also hinted that the Pixel 6 series smartphones won’t come with a charger in the box. So, there’s no cost to the company as it won’t be bundling the 33W power adapter and the search engine giant will be selling the charger separately.

Many flagship smartphones these days, especially the ones from Chinese brands, comes with support for much faster charging. Currently, the top charging speed for a flagship smartphone is 120W but 200W wired charging technology has already been announced and is expected to be available in smartphones from next year.

However, the charging speed reported for the Pixel 6 series falls in line with the charging speed of smartphones from Samsung and Apple. The South Korean giant offers 45W top speed on its device while Apple’s iPhone 13 lineup has support for up to 25W charging.

The Pixel 6 comes with a 6.4-inch Full HD+ display offering a 90Hz refresh rate while the Pro model has a 6.7-inch QHD+ display offering a 120Hz refresh rate. The standard model features a dual-camera setup on the back while the Pixel 6 Pro has a triple-camera setup — a wide-angle lens, an ultra-wide-angle lens, and a 4x telephoto lens.

The photography performance is expected to top the charts as the chipset is said to be focused on photo output and uses artificial intelligence along with machine learning.

The highlight of the Pixel 6 series remains its processor as the phones will come powered by Google’s own chipset — Tensor. Apart from on-device AI and ML capability, the chip is also claimed to have significant improvement in translation, captioning, and dictation. The chipset is likely to be an unreleased Samsung Exynos 9855 SoC.

At the event, the company revealed its progress in developing charging solutions for smartphones as well as other products.

1. Five-Fold Safety Protection System

OPPO explains how it uses a five-fold protection system to ensure its charging technology remains safe even at high levels of charging output.

The brand says that its Flash Charging tech employs five different safety measures, which include:

• A new Fuse with lower Impedance
  OPPO has incorporated a new fuse in its Flash Charging system which features lower impedance. The fuse will blow in case of abnormal electricity supply to the battery while bringing notable improvements in the efficiency and safety of the charging system as compared to its previous generation.
• Efficient Gallium Nitride (GaN) Switches
  OPPO’s Flash Charging technology uses GaN switches (to manage the flow of electricity), replacing the usual MOSFET switches. This change brings in two major benefits,
  in space as well as safety. One GaN switch can replace two series MOSFET switches, so it saves space. Further, thanks to GaN’s lower impedance and the ability to resist higher voltages, it improves the overall charging efficiency while being reliable and safe.
• Internal series bi-cell design
  OPPO’s latest Flash Charging technology relies on a new internal series bi-cell design. Essentially, two battery cells are placed inside one battery casing, separated by special molecular material. These battery cells operate independently while allowing voltage to be doubled within a smaller space than the previous series bi-cell battery design.
• Battery Safety Detection Chip
  The new Battery Safety Detection chip works with OPPO’s AI algorithm to detect significant problems within the battery. It can also remove potentially false warnings and can accurately warn users if the battery has some serious issues.
• Composite Current Collector
  OPPO’s Flash Charging technology uses a new battery that replaces the traditional aluminum anode with a special composite current collector. This composite collector is extremely malleable and significantly reduces the chances of a short circuit in case of external damage.
  According to OPPO’s internal tests, the new battery passes puncture and collision tests with a 100% success rate.

2. Flash Charging is now Smart

Flash charging is known for its fast charging output, but the latest version of this technology is smarter than before. This change brings a better balance between charging speed and battery life. The brand has finally managed to monitor battery conditions in real-time which allows it to adjust the charging power based on the requirement of the device.

For example, if you are charging your device overnight, the Flash Charging technology will switch to ‘relax mode’, wherein it will slowly charge the phone over the course of the night to extend the battery life. OPPO says that while ensuring 65W SuperVOOC, this technology can help retain 80% of the battery’s capacity even after 1500 charging cycles.

It can also work in the opposite use case scenario. Suppose you want to head out urgently, this Smart Charging system can speed up the charging output by up to 20%, reducing the time taken to charge a 4500mAh battery from 36 minutes to just 30 minutes.

Further, if you are charging the phone while using it, this same technology will ensure that the phone doesn’t overheat, optimizing the balance between charging temperature and charging speed in real-time.

3. Extreme Charging Technology for Safe Charging in Freezing Situations

Lithium-ion batteries don’t like extremely cold environments. But OPPO’s flash charging technology aims to enable fast charging even in such extreme conditions by allowing the battery to generate its own heat.

4. OPPO announces The Flash Initiative – Brings VOOC to new products

It’s been seven years since OPPO debuted its Flash Charging technology in the market. Now, the brand is looking to expand its super-fast charging technology to new categories. In this regard, it has launched a new project, The Flash Initiative wherein it will bring its VOOC charging technology to categories like automobiles, and public spaces, through patent licensing. This will allow other manufacturers to use OPPO’s Flash Charging technology in their own products in the future.

Now, the South Korean tech giant Samsung is also working on a new 65W fast charging technology for its upcoming premium smartphones. It is also being reported that the fast charging tech could be used for the upcoming Galaxy S22 lineup.

As per the latest information coming from tipster Tron, the 65W charger is in the testing phase for “Rainbow” which is a codename for the upcoming Galaxy S22 series smartphones. Here, R stands for the vanilla model, G stands for the Plus variant, while B is referring to the Ultra model.

The premium smartphones from the company come with support for 45W fast charging, such as the Samsung Galaxy Note10+. However, most of the devices from the South Korean brand support 15W-25W charging. This is too low for the world’s leading smartphone manufacturer when several companies are offering faster-charging technology.

The 65W charger from Samsung was certified by TÜV SÜD in February this year. This is the same charger with model number EP-TA865 which was certified by South Korea’s NRRA certification in September last year.

The certification process has revealed that the charger will have a maximum output rate of 20V/3.25A and will support the latest USB-IF PD (Power Delivery) standard, which includes a specification called Programmable Power Supply (PPS).

Nowadays, phone manufacturers are removing the charger from the retail box, forcing users to purchase it separately. So, it remains to be seen if Samsung includes the 65W charger in the box when it launches a smartphone with support for such fast charging.

Smartphone manufacturers have been focusing on the fast charging technology for their premium devices for the past few years and it seems that the development in this direction isn’t going to stop anytime soon.

OPPO has been one of the leading players when it comes to fast-charging technology and the company has today announced that it has another major development in mobile charging technology. The Chinese company has confirmed through a poster that details about the same will be revealed on 22nd July.

In the poster shared by OPPO on Weibo, it reads: “From 22.5W to 125W, can mobile phone charging only get faster and faster?” It also adds that the company will talk about something other than “fast.”

Last year, OPPO had unveiled its 125W Super Flash Charging Technology that can charge a 4,000mAh battery-powered smartphone up to 41 percent within five minutes and can fully charge the device in 20 minutes.

The technology is built on the existing 65W SuperVOOC 2.0 charging protocol. The VOOC charging protocol has always focused on increasing the current (instead of the voltage) to increase the total wattage. It is also compatible with the previous versions like SuperVOOC and VOOC protocols.

While the technology was announced last year, the company is yet to incorporate this fast charging solution in its smartphones and the upcoming announcement could be related to that. A team of researchers at the University of Cambridge could soon come up with a battery charging system that can fully charge depleted smartphone batteries within 5 minutes according to a report by the Independent. The research team is led by Dr. Ashray Rao of Cambridge’s Cavendish Laboratory. The team examined the charging and discharging behavior of lithium-ion batteries and developed a mechanism to control the charging speed that resulted in super-fast charging of batteries.

Recently, Xiaomi previewed a fast-charging system called 200W HyperCharge, capable of achieving a full charge for the Mi 11 within 8 minutes. The drawback for the Xiaomi system is that it does not apply to other devices apart from the Mi 11.

The revolutionary Cambridge charging technology is reported to be low cost and could scale up the battery’s charging cycle while avoiding overheating. The opportunities for this research are outstanding. It offers a huge change in technology speed to keep up with the inner workings of the lithium-ion battery. It is not known yet how soon the research will transit from the lab to the market within the next few years.

The quest for the ultimate charging solution is still on. A raft of different approaches has been mooted, including a technique that will use sound energy to charge phones and other devices. However, these emerging technologies are seriously limited as they are yet to achieve the breakthrough needed to transit these technologies to tangible products.

It has to be noted that tremendous progress has been made in the evolution of batteries and their accompanying charging systems. It is now possible to have super-fast charging, both for wired and wireless settings. Just recently, Infinix unveiled its 2021 flagship concept smartphone, packing a 160W wired fast charging and 50W wireless fast charging. This new system is equally faster than Infinix’s which is touted to fully charge a dead 4000mAh battery in 10 minutes.

Xiaomi has a successful lineup of mid-range smartphones under its Redmi Note series and has been setting sales records for the company. This is mainly due to the value-for-money offering and some interesting features usually found on premium phones.

Going forward, the company is planning to offer 100W charging support to the Redmi Note series smartphones, claims a new report coming from Digital Chat Station on Weibo. Currently, the highest charging support offered by the brand in this lineup is 67W.

Recently, Xiaomi introduced its new HyperCharge Fast Charging solution and demonstrated that the 200W wired charging can charge a 4,000mAh battery to 50 percent in just three minutes and takes about eight minutes to get fully charged.

Similarly, the 120W wireless charging solution can charge a 4,000mAh battery to 10 percent in just minutes and takes seven minutes to charge it to 50 percent. It takes only 15 minutes to fully charge the battery.

The 120W wireless HyperCharge has been launched as a successor to Xiaomi’s 80W wireless charging, which was announced back in October last year. The 80W wireless charging technology can fully charge a 4,000mAh battery in 19 minutes.

Going by the development, it seems that Xiaomi will be offering 100W fast charging support for mid-range Redmi Note series smartphones while the brand’s premium or flagship devices will come with support for 200W fast charging support.

Fast charging has greatly improved in the past few years, and it will be dishonest to not acknowledge the role of Chinese manufacturers in the advancement of the technology. However, one major problem is that there is no unifying standard as each manufacturer has its own proprietary technology. That may change in the near future as key Chinese brands have come together to create a new unifying fast-charging standard.

The source of the news is a document that has surfaced on the web that talks about a “Universal fast-charging specification for mobile devices”. A translation of the document reveals that multiple Chinese companies have come together to create a universal fast charging standard to solve the problems the multiple technologies have created.

Some of the listed problems include the high cost of development as key players have to manufacture components for individual customers. Also, the lack of compatibility among devices will stifle long-term plans for the reduction of e-waste and the development of renewable energy.

However, with a unified fast charging standard that works across different brands, these problems can become a thing of the past.

The document mentions that big phone brands such as Honor, Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi as well as other technology companies and stakeholders including Rockchip and the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology have come together to work on this unified fast-charging standard.

We don’t know when this new charging standard will be ready but we don’t expect it to be anytime soon considering there are multiple players on board and reaching an agreement in such a situation may take a while. Nevertheless, it is a welcome development as it will mean consumers will not have to worry about an existing charger they already own being compatible with another device they own or plan to switch to.

A couple of weeks ago, Chinese technology giant Xiaomi had launched its HyperCharge technology for its future premium smartphones that offer 200W wired fast charging and 120W wireless fast charging.

Now, the company answered some of the questions related to this new technology. The firm invited some of its users to ask questions to Xiaomi’s engineers and one of the questions raised was about the safety of smartphones.

In response, Xiaomi confirmed that the technology is safe to use and also added that it has been commercialized that a long time in Research & Development. The company said that there are 40 safety and protective measures included in this new charging technology.

When asked about the battery life of the smartphone and the impact of 200W fast charging solution, Xiaomi said that the phone’s battery life remained above 80 percent after 800 charging cycles, which is much higher than the industry standard as the national requirement of energy is maintained at over 60 percent.

At the time of unveiling the new HyperCharge Fast Charging solution, Xiaomi demonstrated that the 200W wired charging can charge a 4,000mAh battery to 50 percent in just three minutes and takes about eight minutes to get fully charged.

Similarly, the 120W wireless charging solution can charge a 4,000mAh battery to 10 percent in just minutes and takes seven minutes to charge it to 50 percent. It takes only 15 minutes to fully charge the battery.

The 120W wireless HyperCharge has arrived as a successor to Xiaomi’s 80W wireless charging, which was announced back in October last year. The 80W wireless charging technology can fully charge a 4,000mAh battery in 19 minutes.

It currently holds the record for the fastest wireless charging technology and is one of the few manufacturers with a device that supports 120W fast wired charging. Earlier this year, there were reports that Xiaomi has a phone with support for 200W fast charging planned for release in the second half of this year. However, the source explained that the 200W is a sum of all the modes of charging the device supports i.e. wired + wireless + reverse wireless charging. The Mi 11 Ultra which is Xiaomi’s highest premium model supports 67W wired charging, 67W wireless charging, and 10W reverse wireless charging which sums up to 144W. So whatever will be announced tomorrow should see the manufacturer get closer or arrive at the 200W mark.

The Chinese brand already holds the record for the fastest wireless charging technology in a device with its 67W wireless charging technology present in the Mi 11 Pro and Mi 11 Ultra. Last year, it announced an 80W wireless fast charging technology that is yet to be supported by any device yet though it already sells an 80W wireless charger.

A few weeks ago, it was reported that a new flagship smartphone with support for 200W fast charging was about to be launched. Now, a new report coming from a Chinese leaker reveals that the device could be from Xiaomi.

The report further adds that the flagship smartphone from Xiaomi with support for 200W fast charging technology could be launched in the second half of this year. It appears that the device is currently being fine-tuned.

But it’s noteworthy that the report claims that the device, which is currently being developed, is not as good as the Ultra models of the current flagship in terms of performance and the company is working on strengthening the performance.

Do note that the 200W fast charging technology that is being talked about is the combination of wired fast charging, wireless charging and reverse wireless charging. It’s not like the device will have wired fast charging of 200W.

The development isn’t surprising given that Xiaomi’s current flagship smartphone, the Xiaomi Mi 11, already has support for 115W charging. The Mi 10 Extreme Commemorative Edition launched last year also supports 180W charging.

It remains to be see which device from Xiaomi will have support for this high-speed charging. Will it be a variant of the Mi 11 flagship smartphone or a completely new device? To find out, we will have to wait for a few more weeks.

That is a big jump from what was available some five years ago where only a very few phones charged at a rating higher than 18W. Earlier today (18th February 2021), Oppo officially announced that it would be unveiling a new interactive charging technology on 23rd February 2021, during the Mobile World Congress (MWC) Shanghai 2021 event.

In a recent Weibo post, a Chinese microblogging website, the smartphone manufacturer announced that it would be revealing new technology within its charging tech ecosystem. For those unaware, the Chinese tech giant is a major figure in charging technology in the smartphone industry. The company has been teasing the arrival of new the new form of charging. Now, it has officially announced that it would be on the MWC stage in Shanghai on February 23.

Notably, Oppo has been been pushing fast charging technology for years, with its signature 65W fast charging technology being found in its smartphone from various price points as well. Unfortunately, it is currently unknown what the company means by the ‘interactive’ term in its upcoming fast charging solution. In other words, we will have to wait for the official announcement that will arrive next week. Xiaomi has been making progress in the charging technology for its devices and the company has also launched several products in the market to support that. After launching a few fast chargers, the Chinese company is now gearing up to launch another one.

A new Xiaomi charger carrying model number MDY-12-EU recently appeared in the TUV Rheinland certification database. Now, a new report claims that it is a GaN charger that has support for 11V 6.1, with up to 67.1W fast charging.

While this isn’t the fastest charger launched by the company, it could become the go-to choice for the upper mid-range devices from Xiaomi. There’s a possibility that the upcoming devices from Xiaomi in the mid-range to upper mid-range price point could adopt similar fast charging technology support.

Currently, not much is known about this upcoming GaN charger from Xiaomi but given that it has been certified (via stufflistings), we expect it to get officially launched in the coming days or weeks. Maybe the product could get announced with the upcoming smartphone later this month.

For those who are unaware, GaN chargers use gallium nitride semiconductor materials which have the advantages of super thermal conductivity, high-temperature resistance, acid and alkali resistance, and greatly reduces the size of the charger.

Recently, the company had launched the Xiaomi 55W GaN charger that can provide 55W fast charging for the Mi 11, as well as fast charging support for the Mi 10 (30W), Redmi K30 Pro (33W), Redmi K30 5G (30W), among others.

Redmi general manager Lu Weibing insists that the demand for small phones has been on the increase in recent years. He also said battery technology needs to advance to deliver the same battery size in a smaller form factor.

Weibing also made some mention of the future of fast charging and LCD-based in-display fingerprint sensors.

Fast-rising Chinese phone maker, Xiaomi has released various competitive devices this year, but smaller phones are not among the devices released so far. Weibing had previously said that the firm wants to build a small phone but that battery capacity will be sacrificed because the technology is yet to achieve longer-lasting batteries for such small phones.

In an interview session with Android Authority, Weibing acknowledged that indeed there is a growing demand for smaller phones. In his comments, he stated that extended battery life is a fundamental requirement for all Redmi smartphones, stressing that the challenge is developing a physically smaller battery with the same capacity as the larger one requires a tremendous breakthrough in battery technology.

In 2017, the Redmi 4X was released with a 4,100mAh battery while the phone was just 5 inches long. However, a greater challenge awaits the firm in this age 5G, with key components and multiple cameras taking up vital space, while 5G and high refresh rate screens require larger batteries too.

A bigger battery usually requires faster-charging speeds to maintain standard fast charging times. Xiaomi indeed launched 120W charging in 2020. But is there a limit to charging speeds? Improved battery technology holds the key, in the words of the Redmi Executive.
Inevitably, with recent tech advancements, low-end phones will soon have fast charging capabilities.

Although Weibing was silent on the kind of charging speeds Xiaomi is expecting for sub-$300 phones in 2021, the company has already revealed several low-budget phones with 30W or higher speeds in 2020, including the Redmi Note 9 Pro series. So it should be expected that fast charging technology may be more prevalent by 2021.

Of course, super-fast charging was not the only technology Weibing has touted in 2020. He also demonstrated in-display fingerprint sensors using LCD screens earlier this year. However, the implementation of technology seems to be stalled at the moment.

Samsung could be working on a new fast-charging adaptor for the next flagship series. A new leak suggests that the next fast charging adaptor might be a 65W charger and it might debut on the next Galaxy S21 or the even with the Note series next year.

The leak is reported by GalaxyClub(via Sammobile) from the Netherlands. The report says that Samsung is working on a charger with model number EP-TA865. We have two reasons to say that this could be the new Charger from Samsung. For one, it is certified in Korea from the Radio Research Agency and is listed as a travel adapter. Also, it seems to be manufactured by Solum Vina Co Ltd., from Vietnam and the report says the company has made several chargers for Samsung.

Second, this charger has a model number similar to the earlier launched 45W adapter. It had the model number EP-TA845. All these, suggest that the model number is indeed a charging brick. However, it need not necessarily be a 65W charging brick. In fact, after a long time, Samsung’s 45W charger’s model number coincided with wattage. Hence, we think that the ’65’ on the model number might indicate the same but it isn’t confirmed yet.

Besides, if we take Samsung, very few devices like Galaxy S20 Ultra, Galaxy Note 10+ support its highest 45W charging. But comes with just a 25W adapter in the box. To make it worse, Samsung went backward by not including the 45W support on its latest Note 20 series. While this posts serious doubts on the 65W tagline for the charger, it’s high-time Samsung had one for itself.

The year 2020 so far has shown the trend of faster-charging solutions and companies like Oppo, Xiaomi, Nubia, have hopped on the train recently. The latest one to join is OnePlus with its 65W adapter on the upcoming 8T. Hence, it makes total sense for Samsung to join the bandwagon next year. However, the certification of Samsung’s charger doesn’t give any specific details for us and we are left to guess it on our own for now.

This month, we have seen a few smartphone companies officially launching their super-fast charging technology. While we expect some flagship smartphones powered by the same technology to launch this year, the technology seems ready to go mainstream.

According to the information coming from Chinese tipster, we could see 5,000mAh battery and 100W+ fast charging technology become normal for smartphones as early as the first quarter of 20201.

Xiaomi and Vivo both had showcased their 120W fast charging technology last year but it wasn’t ready for commercial usage at the time. However, earlier this month, Vivo’s sub-brand iQOO announced 120W Ultra-Fast Charging technology.

Soon after that, OPPO and Realme also announced 125W Flash Charging and 125W UltraDart Fast Charging technology, respectively. Smartphones from all three brands with this new charging solution could get launched in the coming weeks or months.

A leakster from China claims that the top five smartphone brands have tested the 100W wired fast charging technology to see the market fit. From 20V to 10V, the peak power for this reaches 120W (10V/12A).

Currently, no more information is available regarding this. But we have seen a few brands tease their fast charging solutions and brand like Xiaomi and Vivo have already showcased their fast charging technology.

Stupendously fast charging has become a key feature in phones these days. It is no longer unheard of to see a phone being able to charge from empty to full in under an hour. However, while fast charging is a great feature to have, a common question that comes up is the effect on the battery.

A tweet by Andrei F. (“andreif7) of AnandTech has revealed that OPPO‘s 40W VOOC fast charging technology degrades a phone’s battery to 70% in the same number of cycles it will take a 15W fast charger to degrade a battery to 90%. The tweet specifically said the info was confirmed to them

In reply to a question, he clarified that the conversation was from almost 1.5 years ago. OPPO’s current fastest wired charging technology is its SuperVOOC 2.0 fast charge technology which supports 65W fast charging. Does this mean the battery degrades even faster?

Oppo outright confirmed to us that their 40W degrades to 70% capacity in the same cycles 15W would to 90%. It's all a crock of shit marketing race seeking to have the bigger numbers.

The press release for SuperVOOC 2.0 does say there are safety measures built into the adapter, wire, and phone to ensure your phone is safe during charging but it doesn’t say anything (not surprising) about the long-term effects on the battery.

Based on this, can one say this is the reason why manufacturers such as Nokia, Apple, and Google have stuck to 18W fast charging? Maybe, maybe not.

We hope manufacturers will be more transparent with respect to the long-term effect of regularly charging your phone at the fastest charge possible when they announce new fast-charging technologies.

Update

OPPO’s response shows a table detailing the battery degradation over different charge cycles. The first table in the image shows the battery degradation test carried out in OPPO’s own laboratory while the second table shows TUV Rheinland’s own battery degradation test.

As you can see, the results are close and the battery retains an average capacity of over 91% after 600 charge cycles. Even after 800 charge cycles which should be roughly two years of use, the capacity is still over 90%.

Going by the above results, by the time the battery capacity drops to 80%, the phone should be well into its third year of use or even more. A lot of people begin to think of replacing their phones after 2 years of use.

Let us not also forget that some manufacturers offer battery replacement programs for some of their devices especially popular models which means a user can hold on to their phone for even longer.

Smartphone maker Vivo has applied for a new trademark application which indicates that the company is working on a new fast charging technology under the name “Super FlashCharge”.

While the trademark application doesn’t reveal any information about the technology the company is working on, it seems that this new Super FlashCharge technology could be the previously rumored 55W fast charging tech.

Although the company has not announced anything related to this, we expect Vivo to use this new charging technology on its upcoming high-end smartphone. Currently, the fastest charging speed offered on a smartphone is 65W, present on Oppo Reno Ace.

Last year, Vivo took everyone by surprise as it introduced 120W Super FlashCharge technology. The company claims that its 120W charging technology can completely power a 4,000mAh battery phone in just 13 minutes.

Along with Vivo, Xiaomi has also teased its 100W Super Charge Turbo technology that was able to charge a 4,000mAh battery in 17 minutes. However, both these charging technology have been introduced but not yet available commercially.

Vivo has not yet revealed the technology behind its sophisticated 120W Super FlashCharge. The company has also not confirmed when it will begin the mass production of the technology. There’s a possibility that the trademark application is for this technology or the new 55W charging tech.

On 13th December 2019, Lu Weibing, President of Xiaomi Group China and General Manager of Redmi, addressed the fast charging technology and both companies’ progress within it. The senior executive said that the company was initially a little behind other smartphone manufacturers in the past but are now catching up.

This is further elaborated by Xiaomi’s CEO and Chairman, Lei Jun, who admitted that the company didn’t pay attention to fast charging technology in the past. However, that has not been the case since, with the company now showing promise in the field and is already one of the leaders in terms of wireless charging.

Earlier this year, Xiaomi released the Mi 9 Pro 5G variant which debuted with 30W Super Wireless Flash Charger which was the fastest wireless charger in the smartphone market when it arrived. The device has a large 4000mAh battery which can be fully charged in just 69 minutes, according to the company’s official notes.

Notably, Xiaomi is also reportedly working on a 40W Super Wireless Flash charging which the company mentioned in a conference previously. The technology is still not ready and it will be a while before we see a commercial mass production-ready unit being offered alongside Xiaomi or Redmi smartphones.

Although, since Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship smartphone is just around the corner, it can be assumed that the company might ship the unit with the faster wireless charging technology. This is still speculation so take it with a grain of salt. Lastly, the company is still behind on standard wired fast charging but may soon surpass others similar to its wireless charging advancements. This would be possible with its prototype 100W fast charging which was teased before.

According to a new report, Vivo has just launched a unique Type-C charger which doubles as a mobile gaming data cable. The product has strictly been marketed towards gamers and also features useful functions and design.

Vivo’s new flash charging mobile gaming data cable uses a T-shaped charging plug alongside a suction cup that attaches to the back of a smartphone. The latter can be used to run the cable through the back of the device when charging, which allows for an uninterrupted and nonintrusive gaming experience. This lets only the Type-C charging pin and its small head to be found exposed on the lower part of the handset.

The new flash charger for mobile gaming supports 2A charging. According to officials, it is compatible with both Vivo and IQOO smartphones; and is capable of providing a 44W ultra fast charging which can charge a compatible IQOO device up to 69 percent in just 30 minutes. On the other hand, Vivo’s X27 can also be charged up to 57 percent in 30 minutes using the gaming data cable when it is used with the smartphones 22.5W fast charger. The cable is about 1.2 meters in length and arrives with anti-winding design. Meaning, it is less likely to get tangled in and of itself.

Vivo’s gaming-oriented type-C cable is offered in two color variants which include red and blue versions. And as for the cost, the unique product from the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is offered at a price of 59 Yuan or roughly 7.11 US Dollars.

The Reno3 Pro is ready to give the Redmi K30 5G a run for its money. Details about the features of the upcoming phone, which will launch on December 26, have been pouring in for weeks now. The latest is about the fast-charge technology that will be bundled with the device.

OPPO’s Vice President, Shen Yiren, took to Weibo to reveal that the Reno3 Pro will have an enhanced version of VOOC 4.0. He said the phone will be able to charge from 0 to 50% in just 20 minutes while a full charge will take 56 minutes.

That is much faster than the original VOOC 4.0 which takes 30 minutes to charge a 4000mAh battery from 0 to 67% and 73 minutes to charge it to 100%.

Based on the figures, it appears OPPO has reduced the trickle charge duration or increased the duration of the rapid charge. This way, the phone takes a shorter time to get full.

The Reno3 Pro has been confirmed to have a 4025mAh battery squeezed into a 7.7 millimeters thin body. The battery capacity is smaller than the Redmi K30 5G’s 4500mAh battery but nevertheless, it is good news that the phone is getting an improved fast charge technology.

The Reno3 Pro will come with a Snapdragon 765G processor, 48MP quad-rear cameras, a 6.5-inch OLED display with an in-display fingerprint scanner and a punch hole for a 32MP selfie camera, 8GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and run Android 10 out of the box.
