A Zenfone 4 running Android 9 Pie has been seen on Geekbench which means the phone may be getting a second major OS upgrade soon. The variant is the one powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor and not the Snapdragon 630 but we expect the update to be available to both variants.

The device was benchmarked on the 19th of December but there is no indication that the update will be coming anytime soon. Nevertheless, it should be comforting to owners of the phone that ASUS hasn’t abandoned it yet.

If you know ASUS, you should know that they love releasing multiple variants of their phones. This year is no different as there are 6 different variants of the Zenfone 4.

ASUS not only released new phones, it also announced ZenUI 4.0, the latest iteration of its own custom version of Android.

ASUS Zenfone 4 Pro

The Zenfone 4 Pro is the leader of the pack. It is ASUS’ flagship of the year and we are happy it doesn’t disappoint.

The phone like most flagships has a metal and glass design. There is 2.5D glass on the front and back and a metal frame in-between. ASUS is still in the bezel business so expect it to be bigger than the LG G6 and Samsung Galaxy S8.

The Zenfone 4 Pro packs a 5.5-inch Full HD AMOLED with ASUS’ Tru2Life technology. It is powered by the Snapdragon 835 and packs 6GB of LPDDR4X RAM. Built-in storage is 64GB with the option for expansion via a microSD card slot (2TB max).

ASUS will probably get the award for the flagship with the largest battery as the Zenfone 4 Pro has a 3600mAh battery. It is also just 7.6mm thick. There is NFC and a fingerprint scanner buried under the rectangular home button. You also get an audio jack positioned at the bottom of the phone, a USB type-C port , dual speakers and a FM Radio.

The Zenfone 4 Pro has Bluetooth 5.0,WiFi a/b/g/n/ac and GPS. There will be a Taiwanese/global variant, a North American/UK variant and a Japanese/Indian variant with varying band support.

It will run Android 7.1.1 Nougat out of the box.

Zenfone 4 Pro Cameras

The theme for ASUS this year is photography and it resonates across all its Zenfone 4 lineup.

The Zenfone 4 Pro features dual rear cameras. The sensors are one 12MP Sony IMX362 with a f/1.7 aperture, a 1.4um pixel size and 8x zoom in low light. It is paired with a 16MP Sony IMX351 with 2X optical zoom effect (25mm and 50mm focal lengths). Both

The large aperture of the main camera isn’t the only cool thing about it. ASUS says it has a triple focus system. In addition to the original contrast focus, there is laser focus and a dual-pixel phase detection autofocus that works in conjunction with the four-axis OIS and three-axis EIS and an RGB light sensor for better images. The front camera is an 8MP sensor.

ASUS camera software, PixelMaster has been bumped to 4.0 and brings features like time lapse with power saving, slow motion, and ultra-high resolution images up to 48MP.

Zenfone 4

The Zenfone 4 (ZE554KL) is the mid-range phone in the line-up. It comes in two versions. One has 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and is powered by the Snapdragon 630 while the other has 6GB of RAM and the Snapdragon 660 mobile platform.

Both versions have a 5.5-inch FHD Super IPS display with 600 nits of brightness. It has a dual-SIM hybrid slot with support for up to 256GB microSD cards. There is NFC, a front mounted fingerprint scanner and a 3300mAh battery.

The Zenfone 4 also uses a metal and glass design but the rear 2.5D glass has the concentric circle design ASUS is known for. It will be available in black, moonlight, and green. Do note that the green variant doesn’t have the concentric circle design.

Zenfone 4 Camera

The Zenfone 4 has dual rear cameras just like the Pro. It even has the same Sony IMX362 sensor but with a f/1.8 aperture and a 1.4μm pixel size. The second camera is an OmniVision 8856 8MP wide-angle camera with a 12mm focal length and a 120° viewing angle. The secondary camera has a f/2.2 aperture and a 1.12μm pixel size.

There is OIS, EIS and a built-in RGB sensor inside the main camera. The front camera is an 8MP sensor with an 84° viewing angle and a f/2.0 aperture.

Zenfone 4 Selfie and Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro

ASUS launched the first Zenfone Selfie in 2015 but didn’t follow it up with a successor last year. This year it is releasing two variants

The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro (ZD552KL) has a 5.5-inch FHD AMOLED display with 500 nits of brightness. It is powered by the Snapdragon 652 paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB ROM. It has a 3000mAh battery, support for dual SIM and a front-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Unlike the Zenfone 4 Pro and Zenfone 4 which have dual rear cameras, the Seflie has a single rear camera but dual cameras up front.

The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro has a 12MP Sony IMX362 with a f/1.8 aperture and a 5MP OmniVision 5670 sensor with a 120° viewing angle in front. There is also a front self-timer flash and support for 4K video recording.

The rear camera is a 16MP Sony IMX351 with a f/2.2 aperture, PDAF and EIS for video recording.

The Zenfone 4 Selfie has the same screen size but with a HD resolution. The processor of choice is the Snapdragon 430 but with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. The front cameras are a 20MP OmniVision 20880 paired with an 8MP Omnivison 8856. On the rear sits a 16MP OV16880 sensor. Another difference it has from the Pro version is a dedicated microSD card slot.

Zenfone 4 Max Pro

ASUS already released a Zenfone 4 Max about a month ago but Taiwan will be getting a slightly different version and with the Pro suffix.

The display is still 5.5-inches with a HD resolution but it will be powered by the Snapdragon 425 paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.

Unlike the Zenfone Max which has dual 13MP cameras, the Max Pro will have a 16MP camera paired with a 5MP wide-angle sensor. The front camera is a 16MP sensor instead of 8MP on the Max. Under the hood is a 5000mAh battery.

ZenUI 4.0

ZenUi brings a number of upgrades. There is the wallpaper carousel that changes the wallpaper based on the time of the day. There is also an AI system that categorizes your gallery based on the faces in the pictures.

ZenUI 4.0 also comes with a built-in security system that sends your location to friends and family when you are in danger. ASUS has also included support for dual apps in ZenUI 4.0.now you can run dual Facebook, Instagram, and messenger accounts.

Another new feature is called Page Marker. This works like Pocket, letting you save pages offline for future reading. You can also use it to mark where you stopped reading an article so you can continue reading from there on your other devices.

Pricing and Availabity

The Zenfone 4 Pro will sell for $599 and will be available in Black and Silver.

The Zenfone 4 will start at $399. There is no info on the price of the other variant.

The Zenfone 4 Selfie Pro will be priced at $379 and the Zenfone 4 Selfie will retail for $279.

Pricing detail for the Zenfone 4 Max Pro is unavailable.

It already released the Zenfone 4 Max last month and the guess is that the flagship Zenfone 4 Pro and the mid-range Zenfone 4 will be two of the devices revealed next week.

Roland Quandt has revealed some of the specification details of both devices as well as their possible pricing. According to him, the Zenfone 4 Pro (ZE551KL) will have 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and feature the Snapdragon 835 mobile platform.

The mid-range Zenfone 4 (ZE554KL) will be powered by the Snapdragon 630 which appeared first in Sharp’s Aquos S2. It will have 4GB of RAM and 64GB fof storage.

The Zenfone 4 Pro is expected to sell for about ∼$650/€550 while the Zenfone 4 will be priced around ∼$400/€339. Do note that the final price may veer slightly off the above stated ones.

Just like the Zenfone 4 Max (ZC554KL), the Zenfone 4 and Zenfone Pro will also have dual rear cameras with the latter having 2X optical zoom. ASUS has also switched to a front-mounted fingerprint scanner for the Zenfone 4 series, so you may want to take note of that.

There are two other devices we still do not know when they will launch and they are the Zenfone 4 Selfie and the Zenfone 4V. The former already showed up on GFXBench last month where most of its specs were revealed. The Zenfone Selfie may also be the one without dual rear cameras. Since it is a selfie focused phone, it may swap it for dual front facing ones.

The original launch invitation had revealed that the launch event would be held in Philippines.
The official site is now receiving registrations for the upcoming launch event in Taiwan. ASUS fans who are interested in attending the event can register between Aug. 3 to Aug. 6. The ZenFone 4 presentation will begin at 2:30 PM on Aug. 17. It appears that the ZenFone 4 will be unveiled to the world in Taiwan on Aug. 17 and it seems that there will be another ZenFone 4 unveil event in Philippines for the local audience on Aug. 19.

The teaser image available on the official site reveals that a South Korean actor named Gong Yoo is the brand ambassador for ZenFone in Asia-Pacific region. The actor can be seen holding a smartphone which is probably the ZenFone 4. The smartphone can be seen sporting dual rear cameras with rounded corner on its edges. The phone held by the actor does not seem to be the ZenFone 4 Pro flagship as one of its leaked photos has revealed that it features a “2x optical zoom” text in between the two rear cameras. It does not feature a camera bump which is available on the ZenFone 4 Max and ZenFone 4 Pro.

ZenFone smartphone fans are expecting that ASUS will be unveil all the rumored ZenFone 4 series phones on Aug. 17. However, there is no confirmation on whether the Aug. 17 event will be an exclusive launch event for ZenFone 4 or ASUS will showcase the entire ZenFone 4 series phones.

Speculations have it that ZenFone 4 and other phones from the ZenFone 4 series will debut on Aug. 17. An Italian website, DDay.it, has revealed some leaked photos of the ZenFone 4 Pro placed in a protective case. Also, well-known leakster Roland Quandt has tweeted that the ZenFone 4 Pro was officially shown during a press event in Italy.

According to Quandt, Qualcomm and ASUS collaborated on the demonstration of 1 Gigabit LTE at the Italian press event. One of the other leaked images shown below shows that even Ericsson is also working with ASUS and Qualcomm. He revealed that the phone seen next to the laptop in the image is the ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro. It appears that the Snapdragon 835 chipset of the ZenFone 4 Pro is equipped with Snapdragon LTE X16 modem that is capable of delivering 1 Gbps LTE connectivity with carrier aggregation.

The real-life images of the ZenFone 4 Pro suggest that it would be coming with dual rear cameras that will carry support for 2x optical zoom. The Italian website has claimed that it has a 21-megapixel dual camera module. There is no confirmation on whether it features a pair of 21-megapixel sensors or if one of the camera lenses is of 21-megapixel sensor. Since it is rumored to be a flagship phone, the Italian publication has added that the Snapdragon 835 chipset will be powering the ZenFone 4 Pro.

The ASUS ZenFone 4 Pro is expected to come with a 5.7-inch AMOLED display that will produce Quad HD resolution. Below the display is a Home button that seems to be integrated with a fingerprint sensor.

The ZenFone 4 series is speculated to include the following smartphones:

ZenFone 4 Pro (Z01GD)

ZenFone 4 Max (X00ID)

Fresh information suggests that both the ZenFone 4 models were certified by NCC on June 23. The ZenFone 4 Selfie was certified on June 26. The ZenFone 4 Pro and ZenFone 4 Max were respectively certified in Taiwan on July 18 and 19. The Taiwanese firm has already debuted the ZenFone 4 Max.

In the recent past, the ZenFone 4V was certified by Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the U.S. It is speculated to be a Verizon exclusive phone in the U.S. It is expected to debut in Europe on Sept. 21. The ZenFone is speculated to be available in Snapdragon 660 and Snapdragon 630 chipset variants. Since the ZenFone 4 Pro is speculated as the more powerful edition of ZenFone 4, it may come loaded with Snapdragon 835 SoC.

The ASUS ZenFone 4 series smartphones were initially speculated to debut in May. However, their launch has been delayed to the month of August.

As reported in my previous entry, ASUS is expected to unveil their line-up this month and available for purchase in August, despite delays.

Furthermore, the source image also indicates that the ZenFone 4V will be running Android 7.0 with May 1 security patch, however, ASUS may provide an updated Android OS, out of the box when it becomes available in the US.

We are also expecting ASUS to provide a large collection of variants of the ZenFone 4, similar to its preceding ZenFone 3 and ZenFone 2 smartphones. An interesting point to note is the not all variants may be available as variants such as the ZenFone 3 Zoom has only been on sale for a few weeks, thus a fourth ‘Zoom’ installment may come later than its other siblings.

ASUS has sent press invites for an upcoming September 21 event in Rome, Italy, however, there is a stronger indication that the ASUS ZenFone 4V will be released far earlier, in the coming weeks, instead of months. This is mostly due to the FCC certification process, that we can see on the image. FCC tend to test devices that are set to be released very soon for customers.

What are your thoughts about the ASUS ZenFone 4v?

The images suggest that the horizontally aligned dual rear camera module is placed at the top left corner of the phone along with its LED flash. The right side of the phone has volume buttons and a Power key. The Home button present on the front seems to be embedded with a fingerprint reader. The top side of the phone probably features a 3.5mm audio jack.

The GFXBench listing of ASUS X015D, the alleged ZenFone Go 2, also showed that the phone has a 5.5-inch HD display, 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage. It revealed that the phone is powered by MediaTek MT6750 chipset. However, the rear camera of the phone is mentioned as 8-megapixel and its front-facing shooter is of 5-megapixel. Even the GFXBench listing shows that it supports only one SIM card, it is likely that ASUS may also sell its dual SIM variant.

There is no information available on the pricing and availability of the phone. Now that the alleged ZenFone Go 2 has appeared on TENAA, it is likely to get officially announced soon. Speculations have it that the Taiwanese firm would be announcing ZenFone 4, ZenFone 4s and ZenFone 4 Max smartphones at the upcoming Computex 2017 from May 30 to June 3.
