According to reports from WABetaInfo, WhatsApp is actively working on a feature that will enable users to connect their current WhatsApp accounts to Meta Quest VR devices. Meta, formerly known as Facebook, recently announced the Meta Quest 3 VR headset, which boasts affordability compared to competitors like the Apple Vision Pro.

While VR headset users have long been eager to access WhatsApp on their devices, previous attempts were unsuccessful. However, it appears that the company is finally addressing this demand, bringing WhatsApp functionality to VR headsets.

WABetaInfo highlights that connecting WhatsApp to Meta Quest is not yet possible, as this feature is currently in the development phase. The ability to link existing WhatsApp accounts to Meta Quest will be released to beta testers in a future update of the app.

Samsung Galaxy S23 to get Android 14-based One UI 6 beta in July

Google has been beta-testing Android 14 for a couple of months now and should release a stable build in August. The Pixels are usually the first to get the stable update, followed by Samsung Galaxy devices. However, the Korean company is yet to officially announce a beta program for its phones. Unofficially, it is reported to release the first beta build of One UI 6, based on Android 14, for the Galaxy S23 series in the third week of July.

One UI 6 may rollout faster than One UI 5

Sammobile reports that the Galaxy S23 series will be first to get Android 14 beta update in the third week of July. The outlet says Samsung was waiting for Google to reach platform stability with the Android 14 beta before starting its own development. The beta update will gradually be rolled out for other devices too.

Android-14

Last year’s One UI 5 rollout was the fastest so far and Samsung said it wants the next update to be even faster. The company wasn’t joking because we are apparently receiving the One UI 6 beta a few weeks earlier than the first One UI 5 beta, which also suggests that the stable releases will be earlier compared to last year.

Samsung has already begun updating its apps with One UI 6.0 support a few weeks ago, indicating that an official announcement for the beta program may be imminent. In addition to the Korean company, Oppo has also went ahead and confirmed Android 14 update for 11 of its smartphones, including Find X5 Pro and Reno 8 Pro.

Carl Pei-led Nothing also wants Phone 1 users to try their hands at the latest version of Android. The startup has already made a beta build of Android 14 available for its first handset as part of its Developer Preview Program.

New iOS 17 Feature Aims to Protect You From Nearsightedness and Eye Strain

Smartphone addiction is a growing problem that affects people of all ages. It can lead to increased screen time, which can have negative health consequences. For example, when you hold a smartphone too close to your eyes for long enough, it can lead to several issues, including eye strain and nearsightedness. Apple is introducing a new feature called “Screen Distance” in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 that can help to address this problem. Here are the details…

iPhone’s Screen Distance Feature on iOS 17 Can Help Reduce Eye Strain

A new feature in iOS 17 and iPadOS 17 called Screen Distance can help reduce eye strain and the risk of nearsightedness. The feature uses the TrueDepth camera to measure the distance between your eyes and your device, and will warn you if you are holding your device too close for an extended period of time.

The Screen Distance feature is designed to help reduce eye strain and the risk of nearsightedness. When you are holding your device too close, your eyes have to work harder to focus, which can lead to eye strain. In the long term, this can also increase your risk of developing nearsightedness.

The Screen Distance feature is easy to use. To turn it on, go to Settings > Screen Time > Screen Distance. Once it is turned on, you will see a warning if you hold your device closer than 12 inches for more than 20 minutes. The Screen Distance feature is a helpful way to protect your eyes from strain. If you spend a lot of time looking at screens, I recommend turning it on.

The Battle over Electric Bikes: Chinese City Considers Banning E-Bikes

The use of electric scooters and bikes is becoming increasingly popular worldwide. These vehicles are seen as a more convenient and environmentally friendly way to get around, and the number of rental companies offering them is growing rapidly. However, the growing popularity of this EV’s has led to some challenges. Now, some Chinese cities like Guangzhou, unable to cope with these problems, are looking to restrict electric bikes. Here are the details…

The Future of Electric Bikes in Question!

The increasing popularity of electric scooters and bikes has led to some problems. Riders who ride on sidewalks endanger pedestrians, and those who ride on roads without proper training or knowledge of the rules can cause traffic hazards. These problems have led to fatalities in some cases. For example, in 2019, there were over 10,000 traffic accidents involving e-bikes in China, resulting in over 2,000 deaths. This number is likely to have increased in the four years since. Further, it is reported that a first tier city in China, Guangzhou had to investigate and deal with more than 1.6 million cases of electric bicycle traffic violations by 2022, a staggering increase as compared to the previous years.

In response to the growing number of traffic violations and accidents involving electric bicycles, some Chinese cities, such as Guangzhou, are considering restricting their use. Guangzhou alone has over 3.22 million registered electric bikes, but the actual number may be higher.

The Guangzhou government has recently released a draft notice on the management of electric bicycles, proposing restrictions on their usage based on location and time. According to the draft notice, many areas across the city would be subjected to the restrictions, including full-day limitations, restrictions from 7:30 a.m. to 7:30 p.m., and peak-hour restrictions.

Guangzhou traffic police show that in 2021, they handled over 1.12 million cases of traffic violations by electric bikes, up 169% from the previous year. In 2022, the number of violations exceeded 1.6 million, a sharp increase even after comprehensive governance and educational guidance efforts. Moreover, the number of electric bicycle owners purchasing insurance is alarmingly low, with only approximately 240,000 insured. The proposed restrictions are a move to address the growing safety concerns surrounding electric bicycles.

However, some people are concerned that restricting the use of e-bikes will make it more difficult for people to get around, especially those who cannot afford cars. They argue that e-bikes are a convenient and affordable form of transportation, and that banning them would only make the problem of traffic congestion worse.

It is unclear whether the benefits of e-bikes will convince Guanzhou’s administrators to not implement a ban. Also, this problem is not unique to China, as city administrations around the world are considering similar bans. The debate over e-bikes is likely to continue for some time, but it is clear that something needs to be done to address the traffic chaos and safety concerns caused by these vehicles.

Xiaomi 14 Pro leaked render suggests familiar camera setup, resembling Xiaomi 13 Pro

Leaked renderings of the upcoming Xiaomi 14 Pro smartphone have recently surfaced, offering a glimpse into its design and features. The leaked images reveal that the Xiaomi 14 Pro will largely retain the design language of its predecessor, the Xiaomi 13 Pro (check out our full review of Xiaomi 13 Pro), emphasizing design inheritance and brand recognition.

Xiaomi 14 Pro render back side

Xiaomi 14 Pro Renderings: A Familiar Design Language

Leakster SPinfoJP posted these renders. Previously, the leaker accurately revealed the rendering of the Xiaomi 13 Ultra (check out our full review on Xiaomi 13 Ultra) with a 90% accuracy rate, with minor differences in details, lending high credibility to the current leak.

The renderings showcase a square camera module on the rear of the device, housing three cameras, including a periscope telephoto lens positioned at the bottom. This marks a departure from previous Xiaomi series models, as the Xiaomi 14 Pro and Xiaomi 13 Pro shows minimal changes in appearance.

Xiaomi 13 Pro’s back panel

While the back panel design remains largely unchanged, the front of the Xiaomi 14 Pro will undergo significant alterations as we have already seen in a past render leak. It will feature a narrow bezel design with slightly curved edges, resulting in a four-curved display. The 2.5D curvature effect will be minimal and limited to the black border area, ensuring it does not affect the display quality. According to a previous leak, Xiaomi 14 series will also have a flat display variant. The premium variant will feature the curved display while the base variant will likely house the flat display.

One of the key highlights of the Xiaomi 14 Pro will be the inclusion of the highly anticipated Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. This chipset, expected to be released by Qualcomm in October, promises to deliver enhanced performance and power efficiency, setting the stage for a seamless user experience.

Traditionally, Xiaomi has followed a November launch pattern for its flagship devices. Therefore, it is highly likely that the Xiaomi 14 series, including the Xiaomi 14 Pro, will make its global debut and officially launch in November.

Post, another Twitter Alternative, Launches an iOS App for News Consumption

Among a multitude of platforms coming up alongside Twitter, Post is one other contender vying for the title. The platform made its highly anticipated debut on iOS devices last Thursday. Labelled as a revolutionary platform for news consumption on social media, Post aims to redefine how people stay informed on the web. The app offers users three distinct feeds: following, explore, and news, with the latter being the app’s focal point.

Content Creators can also market their content effectively via Post

Within the news tab, users can access a stream of articles curated from Post’s esteemed publishing partners, including renowned outlets such as Reuters, the Los Angeles Times, Wired, Yahoo Finance, Fortune, Insider, and NBC News, among others. While headlines and an initial snippet of the articles are freely accessible, readers must make a microtransaction using “points” to unlock the entire piece within the app.

Post Profile

It’s important to note that these articles are not paywalled content from the publishers’ own websites. In most cases, readers can access them by visiting the publishers’ platforms. However, for those seeking the convenience of ad-free, in-app reading without intrusive pop-ups, the option to pay for the content might prove appealing.

At present, publishers receive 100% of the revenue generated from these micropayments, although this arrangement may evolve in the near future as Post seeks profitability in order to keep the platform up and running. The platform’s current funding is provided by Andreessen Horowitz and Scott Galloway, a marketing professor and an author at New York University.

The number of points required to unlock an article varies depending on the publisher. The most affordable in-app transaction is priced at 300 points for $4.29. Articles start at just one point, with the highest costing approximately 29 points. Consequently, readers can expect to pay as little as a few cents for most articles, with a maximum cost of around 40 cents. Users also have the option to tip publishers or content creators as an appreciation for their work.

Within just eight months since its launch, Post has managed to amass an impressive user base of over 440,000 individuals. As the app continues to evolve and gain traction, it remains an interesting prospect in the landscape of social media news consumption. Over the past few weeks, we have heard news of multiple Twitter alternatives under development. Only time will tell if Post can emerge as the true successor to Twitter and revolutionize the way we consume news in today’s age and time.

China-South Korea Technology Trade Declines in May, thanks to the Ongoing US-Chian Tech War

Last month, South Korea witnessed a significant slump in its tech trade with China. According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry, and Energy, semiconductor shipments from South Korea to China experienced a sharp decline of 35.7 percent compared to the previous year.

Notably, the memory chip trade took the hardest hit, plunging by 53.1 percent, primarily due to sluggish demand in China. This decline comes amidst ongoing geopolitical tensions, which have had a profound impact on the chip supply chain landscape in Asia.

china

South Korea, a prominent player in the information and communications technology (ICT) sector, faced a considerable setback in its exports to mainland China and Hong Kong. The ICT exports, encompassing semiconductors, displays, and smartphones, witnessed a staggering drop of over 30 percent in May compared to the same period last year.

These figures underscore the challenges faced by the tech trade between South Korea and China, with ramifications for both countries. The geopolitical tensions have prompted a reassessment of supply chain dynamics in the region, leading to disruptions in the flow of crucial technology components. The decline in the tech trade, especially in semiconductors, between China and South Korea may be indicative of the impact on China’s position within the global chip supply chain.

Korean exports, encompassing items like chips, displays, and refined oil, are often regarded as key indicators of international trade trends due to their significant role within global supply chains. The latest data suggests a partial rebound in demand for Korean goods; however, overall exports continue to exhibit weakness, primarily attributed to an accumulation of chip inventories and China’s lackluster economic growth.

China- South Korea Trade Relations:

China and South Korea’s trade relations are highly impacted by the US- China Tech War. South Korea’s semiconductor industry, led by Samsung Electronics and LG, is crucial for U.S. export control efforts against China. With China as its primary trading partner since 2003, accounting for over 60% of chip exports, and a trade-dependent economy, South Korea’s cooperation holds significant importance. The United States represents a mere 7.7% of its chip exports, amplifying the stakes for South Korea.

In April 2023, a year-on-year analysis reveals a slight increase in China’s exports by $230 million (1.73%) from $13.3 billion to $13.6 billion between April 2022 and April 2023. However, imports from South Korea experienced a significant decline of $4.3 billion (-26%) from $16.5 billion to $12.2 billion during the same period.

Amidst US export restrictions on advanced semiconductors and chip-making equipment, China has intensified its efforts to enhance self-sufficiency in legacy chips used in automobiles and household appliances. Consequently, the reduced information and communications technology (ICT) trade with South Korea highlights China’s focus on domestic production and self-reliance.
