Design

You can not expect the best look from a phone that costs less than $150, and indeed, all of these devices feature a not exciting polycarbonate design. The most beautiful is the Samsung Galaxy J4 Core as it boasts thinner bezels and a higher screen-to-body ratio. Further, it is also way thinner than its opponents. On the other hand, Moto E5 Play is more interesting in terms of build quality as it is splash resistant.

Display

Samsung Galaxy J4 Core and Nokia 2.1 have the most interesting displays. They are very wide (6 inches 18:9 vs 5.5 inches 16:9) and they feature an HD resolution. The best phone for multimedia use is Nokia 2.1 because it has more powerful stereo speakers.

Specs

With its 2 GB of RAM making the difference, Moto E5 Play is the phone with the best hardware department. It can provide better performances, especially in multitasking. Further, it exists in a variant with the Snapdragon 427 SoC which is even better than Snapdragon 425. Nokia 2.1 has the worst hardware side with just 8 GB of internal storage, but it is the only one to have a micro SD dedicated slot which matters if you are planning to use the dual SIM functionality.

Camera

Motorola Moto E5 Play is the one I prefer even when it comes to cameras. Indeed, it has a rear camera with a brighter aperture than its opponents: f/2.0. You will still get disappointing photos if we compare this device with actual mid-rangers, but with its bright aperture and a nice pixel size, the final result is slightly better.

Battery

Nokia 2.1 has the biggest battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh which is huge for an entry-level device. Indeed, it can last two full days even with a very stressed use, thanks to both the capacity and the very efficient components. Samsung Galaxy J4 Core takes the second place with its 3300 mAh unit which is all but disappointing for the same reasons.

Price

You can get these devices for a very affordable price thanks to Android Go. Nokia 2.1 costs about €100/$113, Moto E5 Play carries a price tag of about €80/$90, while the price tag of Samsung Galaxy J4 Core is not known yet. I would personally pick Nokia 2.1 because of its bigger battery and stereo speakers.

Vivo Y95 spotted on Geekbench, retail box and promo image leaks

The Vivo Y95 is an upcoming mid-range phone that is expected to launch in India very soon. The phone’s specs and pricing leaked a few days ago. It has now been followed by images of its retail box and a promo poster, in addition to a Geekbench listing.

The Vivo Y95 was benchmarked a few days ago and it appears as the “vivo vivo 1807” on the site. The phone is running Android 8.1 Oreo and has 4GB of RAM. The chipset isn’t stated, instead what you have is ”QC_Reference_Phone”. Though we do know it is an octa-core processor with a base frequency of 1.96GHz. Our guess is that the Vivo Y95 is powered by the Snapdragon 439 processor just like the Vivo Y93 which was announced in China last week.

Images of the phone’s retail box have also been shared online. As you can see above, the Vivo Y95 has a water-drop notch which is home to a 20MP AI selfie camera. On the back of the box, it is revealed the phone has a 6.22-inch Halo FullView Display and packs a 4030mAh battery.

The bottom of the box lists the phone’s model number as Vivo 1807 just like the Geekbench listing above. It also mentions the phone will have 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The color of the unit in the retail box is Starry Black.

Xiaomi India announces increase in price of Redmi 6, Redmi 6A, Mi TVs and more, cites weakened Rupee

Just a few days ago, Realme announced it was increasing the prices of two of its products – the Realme 2 and the Realme C1. The company which is an off-shoot of OPPO gave the reason for the upward price adjustment to be the weakening Indian Rupee. Today, it is Xiaomi‘s turn to increase prices and it affects a lot more products.

The announcement was made on Twitter by the managing director of Xiaomi India, Manu Jumar Jain. He explained that the reason for the price increase is due to the Indian Rupee’s depreciation against the US Dollar by ~15% since the beginning of the year. Below is a list of the affected products and their new prices:

Redmi 6A

The 2GB RAM + 16GB and 2GB RAM + 32GB models of the Redmi 6A will add INR 600 and INR 500 to their old prices respectively and will now be sold for INR 6,599 (~$91) and INR 7,499 (~$104).

Redmi 6

The Redmi 6 with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage will also get a INR 500 price increase and will be sold for INR 8,499 (~$117) henceforth.

Mi LED TV

The price increase affects the Mi LED TV 4C Pro 32 and the Mi LED TV 4A Pro 49. Xiaomi has added INR 1,000 and INR 2,000 to their old prices respectively. Henceforth, the 32-inch 4C Pro will be sold for INR 15,999 (~$220) and the 49-inch 4A Pro will go for INR 31,999 (~$441).

Xiaomi entered into the Indian smart TV market this year and has now become the number one brand in the segment. However, the increase in the price of the TVs may slow down its growth.

Mi Power Bank 2i (1o,000mAh Black)

The black Mi Power Bank 2i with a battery capacity of 10,000mAh gets a INR 100 price increase and will now be sold for INR 899 (~$12.40). The limited edition Red variant is currently sold at the above price.

We earlier reported that Xiaomi-backed Black Shark Technologies is all set to launch its first gaming smartphone — Black Shark globally. Now, the company has revealed that it’ll release the phone in Europe on 16th November.

To mark the occasion, the company is running a competition called Lootbox Challenge. By participating in the event, you can play games and level up by completing tasks, which allows you to unlock virtual loot boxes. The boxes contains various prizes, discounts, and even a free Black Shark phone and a gamepad. It is also offering a “discounted pre-order credit” that can be used when the store opens next week.

Foldable smartphone panel shipments expected to reach 50 million by 2025: IHS

Foldable smartphones are gradually becoming a phenomenon that could soon take the industry by storm. The first real foldable device, the Royole Flexpai, was launched in China recently. The year 2019 has already been predicted to be the year of foldable smartphones just as 2018 was dominated by full-screen phone. Samsung has already revealed that it would be releasing a foldable phone. So too, the trio of LG, Huawei and OPPO have at one point or the order shown interests in foldable phones. Research firm IHS Markit has now predicted that the number of foldable AMOLED screens that will be shipped between now and 2025 will reach 50 million.

Despite the towering prediction, it shows the foldable design won’t be so popular as it will account for just 6% of expected total AMOLED shipments by 2025 (825 million). The foldable AMOLEDs are also expected to account for 11% of the total shipments of flexible AMOLED panels (476 million). According to Jerry Kang, a senior principal analyst at IHS Markit Display Research, phone manufacturers are putting serious efforts in the aspect of smartphone designs, bringing in more innovativeness. This innovativeness is borne out of the need to shift focus from the traditional smartphone market due to saturation.

Jerry Kang also disclosed that smartphone manufacturers are rather cautious about launching a foldable smartphone due to concerns about durability especially when the panel is folded repeatedly. Thus, the shift to foldable AMOLED may indeed be a gradual one. The panel makers are expected to gradually increase their plant capacity utilization. Due to the low demand for traditional flexible AMOLED panels, suppliers expect smartphone brands to introduce foldable devices as early as possible. With a more optimistic attitude, some manufacturers are even considering investing in new factories to produce foldable AMOLED panels. IHS predicts that the supply capacity of flexible AMOLED panels will account for more than half of the total supply capacity of AMOLED panel by the fourth quarter of 2019.

Design

Vivo X21s and Oppo RX17 Neo have a similar design and it is impressive in both cases. They have a very high screen-to-body ratio thanks to narrow bezels and a waterdrop notch, as well as gradient color variants, while Nokia X7 is less attractive with its thicker bezels. If you like to have a reflective glass back with light waves, you will love the Oppo RX17 Neo more, while if you want the highest screen-to-body ratio, Vivo X21s is for you

Display

With its higher screen-to-body ratio and the Super AMOLED technology, Vivo X21s has the most convincing display among these devices. Hardware & Software

OnePlus 6T teardown affords use our first look at its internals

Since the OnePlus 6T flagship was announced about two weeks back, the device has seen several positive reviews. Apart from reviews, the device has been put through the durability test by YouTuber JerryRigEverything with the device coming out in flying colours. The YouTuber has also released a second video where he dismantles the OP6T.

The dismantling video takes us through the entire teardown process right from when the rear panel is opened. Well, Zack Jerry had earlier taken off the metal back to make a transparent back. So he just took off the transparent back to commence the teardown. The video shows the 3700mAh battery is held in place with glue but is pretty easy to remove.

The disassembly video also gives us our first look at the OP6T in-display fingerprint reader. The video shows there is an opening just under the AMOLED panel that lets the sensor to capture the user’s fingerprint including all of its ridges and pores, for accurate identification. The sensor looks very similar to a regular phone camera sensor but is a lot smaller. In addition, the video also shows the OnePlus 6T come with watertight seals wherever there is an opening, affirming its water-resistant build. The chin of the device is a bit thick and the notch seems to be housing the front-facing camera, an earpiece and some other sensors. The volume rockers are present on the left side of the phone. The Power button is located on the right edge. The handset does not feature a physical button for accessing Google Assistant.

Like the predecessor LG Q8, the upcoming LG Q9 could be an IP68 rated and MIL-STD-810G certified handset. The handset is rumored to arrive with a 6.1-inch IPS LCD display that supports Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.

The Snapdragon 660 is expected to power the 32 GB and 64 GB editions of the LG Q9 along with 4 GB of RAM. The handset is rumored to be packed with a 3,550mAh battery. The handset is expected to arrive with a rear-facing fingerprint scanner and carry support for NFC connectivity. The Android 8.1 Oreo OS is expected to arrive preinstalled on the smartphone.

LG is yet to confirm on the unveil date of the LG Q9 smartphone. The pricing of the smartphone is also under the wraps.

Samsung W2019 flip phone is official with dual screens, dual cameras and Snapdragon 845 (UPDATE: Price)

UPDATE: Samsung has priced the W2019’s 6+128GB model at 18999 Yuan ($2732!). Goes on pre-sale from Nov. 11.

Samsung has announced the W2019 flagship flip phone through a launch event in China. It has arrived as the successor of the Snapdragon 835 powered W2018 flip phone that was announced in December last year. Compared to the predecessor model, the W2019 has come with some new features such as improved processor, dual rear cameras and side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Samsung W2019 Specifications and Features

The Samsung W2019 flip phone features an external S-AMOLED display of 4.2 inches that carries support for Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The 4.2-inch internal S-AMOLED display of the phone also supports FHD resolution.

The clamshell phone when closed measures 132.9 x 63.4 x 17.3mm and it weighs 257 grams. The rear side of the phone is made out of Corning Gorilla Glass. It comes in two color choices of Rose Gold and Platinum. Opening the flip phone reveals its directional keypad as well as its numeric keypad. The smartphone is equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The Snapdragon 845 chipset is present under the hood of the Samsung W2019. The SoC is supported by 6 GB of RAM. It comes in storage choices of 128 GB and 256 GB. There is a microSD card slot for expanding the storage of the clamshell phone. The W2019 is backed by 3,070mAh battery that offers 85 hours of standby time and around 280 hours of talk time.

Turning the phone to its back reveals its horizontally arranged 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual camera module. The main sensor supports f/1.5 – f/2.4 intelligent variable aperture. The secondary sensor has f/2.4 aperture. The dual rear cameras is equipped with features like OIS, 2x optical zoom, 4K video shooting at 60 fps and dual-tone LED flash. It also supports recording of Full HD slow motion videos at 960 fps.

The Android 8.1 Oreo OS along with Samsung Experience UI is present preinstalled on the W2019 flip phone. The connectivity features available on the smartphone include dual-SIM support, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, NFC and Bluetooth 4.2. It lacks support for 3.5mm audio jack. The handset is equipped with a dedicated button for accessing Bixby AI assistant.

Samsung is known for providing exclusive concierge services for the users of W-series flagship flip phone. Free software fixes, phone disinfection and exclusive hotline service are some of the premium services that are available for the buyers of Samsung W2019.

Samsung W2019 Pricing and Release Date

Samsung is yet to confirm on the pricing of the smartphone. The smartphone will be exclusively available for purchase through China Unicom. The handset is expected to be priced more than 10,000 Yuan (~$1,439).
