iPhone SE 3 Transformed into a Classic Windows Phone With a Hardware Mod

It has been nearly a decade since the last Windows phone was released. But a DIY hardware mod has unofficially revived the Lumia phone. A bizarre project has managed to build an iPhone into the chassis of a classic Windows Lumia phone. So let’s check it out.

The project was undertaken by a Redditor who shared images of his jerry rigged ‘Windows iPhone’ on the r/hackintosh subreddit. Keep in mind that this is just a hardware mod, so the iPhone SE 2022 isn’t running on the Windows Mobile operating system. So if you were curious to see what an iOS running Windows Phone looks like, this is your best bet. The fusion includes the iconic design of the Nokia Lumia 1020 with a modern iPhone.

As crazy as it sounds, the Frankenstein device is fully functioning, which means you can use the 12MP camera on the rear, get access to Touch ID (but it has been moved to the back), and get the Taptic engine. But that’s not all, 5G is fully functioning as well as a SIM card tray, and flash module. There is also the dated Lightning port, but this is technically an upgrade considering how the old Lumia phone offered the older micro USB.

This is a pretty impressive hardware mod that brings all of the functionality of the iPhone, but even managed to include a way to use the Lumia 1020’s camera shutter button. In the post, the person basically made the shutter button as a second volume down button to allow for similar functionality. But there is always a catch and that is the loss of the headphone jack. This project arrives as Apple discontinued the iPhone SE model, so you can even look at this as two discontinued models joining hands for a new life.

Satya Nadella Says Shutting Down Microsoft’s Mobile Business Was A Mistake

There was a time when Microsoft was widely known in the smartphone market. The Redmond-based tech giant forayed into the smartphone segment way back in 2010 with Lumia devices running on Windows OS. The company competed against Android and iOS smartphones. However, it was short-lived as in 2017, Microsoft said that it would not develop any feature or hardware for Windows 10 mobiles. Now, in an interview with Business Insider, Satya Nadella, the CEO of the software giant has admitted the mistake of giving up on mobile business. However, he is also not the first CEO of the company to reveal this.

Satya Nadella admits shutting down Microsoft’s smartphone business

Satya Nadella took over former CEO Steve Ballmer in 2014. Just over a year later, he wrote off $7.6 billion related to Microsoft’s acquisition of the Nokia phone business. When asked about any real strategic mistake or wrong decision in the interview, the CEO stated “The decision I think a lot of people talk about – and one of the most difficult decisions I made when I became CEO – was our exit of what I’ll call the mobile phone as defined then”

The executive also added that Microsoft’s mobile phone business could have been handled better. The company could have reinvented the category of computing between PCs, tablets, and phones.

Nadella admitting his mistake in shutting down Microsoft’s phone business doesn’t come as a surprise. Former CEO Bill Gates revealed that the company did not end up doing the mobile OS well enough. Steve Ballmer also confessed that he regretted not focussing on the phone quite earlier.

Microsoft tried its hands multiple times in the smartphone business however, it failed to garner any success. Even after acquiring Nokia’s smartphone division, the company could not break the duopoly of Android and iOS. The Redmond-based company has Android-based Surface Duo and Surface Duo 2 foldable phones launched a few years ago, however, their future remains uncertain.

The just released Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 4 could be in for a great run. A tech geek has posted a YouTube video that detailed how he transformed the latest Samsung foldable flagship into a Windows Phone. Mark Spurrel used a combination of two Android launchers and Bixby Routines to achieve his objective. The process holds some promise for the versatility of the Galaxy Z Fold 4.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 and Z Flip 4 have just become available with improved components from the first-generation Z-series foldable phones. The YouTube video covered how the tech geek transformed his new foldable to look like a Windows PC on the inner display. The process showed a folding phone having the Windows Phone tiles when closed. These tiles are customizable and match what you would expect on a typical Windows Phone. In addition, Spurrel was able to create quick access to other functions like the camera.

The transformed inner display of the Galaxy Z Fold 4 has the Windows 10 desktop environment, with shortcuts and the start menu. The widgets for the clock, calendar, and other settings are located in the bottom left corner. There is also a full panel for settings and notifications. The innovator, however, pointed out that the transformation isn’t perfect, as the phone constantly switches between launchers. It is surely a great starting point however and he can significantly improve the process for greater efficiency.

The Galaxy Z Fold 4 currently starts at $1,799.99. It is both an excellent tablet and a great smartphone combined in a single device. It has a lightning-fast Snapdragon chipset and an overall durable and performance-driven setup. There are a variety of trade-ins and network plans from several carriers like AT&T and Verizon, as well as retailers like Amazon and Best Buy.

Older Windows Phone Devices To Stop Receiving Notifications Forever

Not only did Microsoft end the support for Windows Phone, the Redmond giant is going to make it literally obsolete. From February 20, the older Windows smartphones will stop receiving notifications and it will not be possible to localize them anymore through the “Find my phone” service. It is worth noting that devices that are going to be affected are not the ones with Windows 10 Mobile or Windows 8.1.

The smartphones affected by the switch-off are the ones which still have Windows Phone 7.5 and 8.0 installed. On these devices, the service Mobile Push Notification will be completely disabled. Fortunately, every device with Windows Phone 7.5 and 8.0 has already been updated to WP 8.1 via OTA, so the number of handsets which still have these versions of the operating system is probably low.

Alongside the notifications, the phones interested will not receive live tile updates anymore. According to Microsoft, after five years, Windows Phone 7.5 and 8.0 have reached the end of their support, so they will be slowly discontinued. If you still have a handset with WP 7.5 or 8.0, it is better for you if you update them to the 8.1, or using them will soon become an issue. On February 20, 2018, Mobile Push Notification services will be turned off for Windows Phone 7.5 and Windows Phone 8.0. Once this happens: Your phone will no longer receive notifications. Your phone will not receive additional live tile updates. The “Find my phone” feature will no longer locate your phone. Windows Phone 7.5 and 8.0 have reached their end of support dates, and thus services for these versions of Windows will be discontinued over time.

Microsoft’s Joe Belfiore Says Windows Phone Is No Longer Company’s Focus

There have been a lot of speculations regarding the future of Microsoft’s Windows Phone platform. Now, it seems that the company’s executive Joe Belfiore has put the matter to rest.

Joe Belfiore, former Windows Phone program manager and current Corporate VP for Windows, has tweeted that new features and hardware for Windows 10 Mobile “aren’t the focus anymore” for the company.

However, if you are the one who is still using Windows Phone, you’ll still get fixes and security patches, but don’t expect anything more than that. The fixes and patches will keep coming mainly due to the adoption of Windows 10 Mobile for Work in the enterprise market.

One of the major reason he pointed out for dropping the platform is to get developers to develop apps for the platform. He even said that Microsoft tried paying companies to make apps, but the lack of users became another problem as for most companies, the userbase was too low to invest.

Of course, there were more reasons behind the failure of Windows Phone. While the company failed to keep up with Android and iOS, it also had no specific hardware strategy, or so it appeared.

The tweets clearing the air regarding Windows Phone comes from Belfiore after talks about him switching to iPhone and Android devices as his daily drivers.

While it is clear that Microsoft is no longer focusing on the platform, at least not for the near future, the company seems to be more focused on developing and improving applications for Android, macOS and iOS.

Microsoft is encouraging employees to create cross-platform apps in their spare time with Microsoft Garage. Apart from that, it has also launched a few apps for other platforms, including Microsoft Launcher, Edge, Kaizala, Cortana, Next Lock Screen, among others.

As per the rumours, Microsoft is working on a new “mobile” device codenamed Andromeda, which is expected to launch next year. The device will run on the new “Windows Core OS” platform.

Looks Like Microsoft Lumia is Finally Dead & Buried in China

It has been four months since the Microsoft Lumia Weibo account was renamed as Nokia mobile phones in China but the company is yet to come out to announce the death of the Lumia brand. But Microsoft China seems to have confirmed the closure of the Lumia line.

Microsoft China recently posted a series of videos on video sharing website Bilibili in China which individually showcases the entire Lumia lineup. The videos contain promotional teasers for a long lineup of Microsoft Lumia phones in the Lumia series. From the videos, the Nokia 650 is likely the last Lumia smartphone Microsoft will be selling. Recall that there are rumours Microsoft is killing the Lumia line in favour of a new Surface phone brand. The post accompanying the videos reveals that the videos are to commemorate the classic series which the company began in 2011. In addition, it reveals categorically that the Lumia series have been shelved.

While we are not sure of the emergence of a new Surface phone brand from Microsoft, the post contains the rider “let’s look forward”. This could be a reference to a new product line which could possibly be the Surface phone, just when we though Windows 10 devices are dead and buried. So, while the Lumia brand may be dead, that doesn’t mean Windows mobile is dead. We may likely be seeing the re-emergence of Windows mobile phones soon, not so soon anyway. A recent report has suggested that the company has postponed the launch of the Surface Phone to 2018.

Windows Phone Is As Good As Dead in China while Android & iOS Continue to Soar

Windows Mobile OS is almost dead in China! That is the damning verdict contained on Kantar WorldPanel’s latest analysis of the mobile OS market. The latest report confirms what we are already getting accustomed to, which is that the world is moving towards a two mobile OS zone controlled entirely by Google’s Android OS and Apple’s iOS. All other mobile OS as we know them are dying off gradually.

Worse hit is the Microsoft Windows OS which lost ground even in some of its stronghold. Windows OS slipped to a miserly 1.3% in the US, dropping 50% from its position last year. Italy used to be one of Windows OS’ strongest market but it dropped from its market shares last year which stood at 7.2% to 4.4% presently. Talking about China, one of the world’s largest mobile phone market, Windows Mobile OS recorded 0.1% total sales in the last three months, according to Kantar. This leaves no room for doubt that Windows for mobile is as good as dead in China. Microsoft’s Lumia phones were the main users of the Windows Mobile OS but since the demise of the brand, usage on phones has dropped drastically in China and elsewhere.

Whereas Windows Mobile is dying, Google and Apple continues to dominate the terrain with the Android OS credited with 56.4% of smartphone sales in the US where it lost 1.8% of its share of the market to the iOS. Apple’s iOS accounts for 42% of the US smartphone market rising up by 2.9% from last year. In Europe’s largest markets, including Great Britain, Germany, France, Italy and Spain, Google’s Android phones accounted for 74.3% of smartphone sales in the latest period, recording a slight 1.4% increase from this same period last year.Apple’s iOS on the other hand, held a 22.7% share, with iPhone 7 remaining the top-selling device in Great Britain, France, and Germany.

The dominance is also rampant in the Asian market, including where Android clearly dominates. Perhaps, a clear demonstration of this dominance is the latest Blackberry and Nokia launch which saw both companies going for the Android operating system instead of their own OS. As it stands, there is no likelihood that this dominance would end in the near future but the good thing is that we are getting the best out of Android and iOS at the moment. Things just keep on getting better ad better with each new update and we hope for more.

Windows powered ZTE Nubia Z9 Max spotted in pictures!

We are eagerly waiting for the official announcement of the new ZTE Nubia Z series smartphones on March 26, which is just a week away. Thanks to the numerous leaks, we already have an idea about the upcoming handsets, which includes the recently showcased ZTE Nubia Z9 Max, the leaked ZTE Nubia Z9 Mini and the flagship ZTE Nubia Z9.

However, earlier today, a series of pictures revealed that the company may have a surprise in store for fans at the event. The leaked pictures showed off a device which looked identical to the ZTE Nubia Z9 Max but was running on a different OS than Android.

Yes, the ZTE Nubia smartphone was running on the Windows Phone OS which is a first for this lineup. The device had a similar design as the Max, with the double glass and metal body. However, the phone was running on the new Windows Phone OS. We even see Cortanan running, but it reports back with the message, “I’m sorry but I can’t speak your language yet”. Naturally, it looks like sometime tried giving commands to Cortana in Chinese.

It looks like the images were taken at Microsoft’s office, probably at an internal event. However, we still don’t know the exact Windows Phone version running on this device nor the specs that it features. But since this looks like Z series Nubia smartphone, expect it to be pretty high end.

So will we be seeing the new ZTE Nubia Z9 running on Windows Phone OS at this month’s event? Or is the phone still in the development stage?

Well, we just have to wait for a week more to clear things out.

Just a few hours back we reported that Microsoft was partnering up with Xiaomi, Lenovo, Tencent and even Qihoo for expanding its software in the country and this particular leak only confirms that the company has some big plans for its OS in China.

Hisense launched a WP8.1 cell phone NANA, with the price of 599 RMB, surprisingly together with touch buttons in Android icons.

From the hot selling of Nokia Lumia 520, Hisense phone was aspired to produce low price Windows Phone, recently, Hisense launched its first Windows Phone8.1 mobile phone, NANA, which provides Chinese version of Cortana voice service, with the price only 599, what’s more, the three touch buttons at the bottom of the machine are standard icons for Android, which means that this machine can root the Android system.

Hisense has not officially stated the method for rooting the machine, however, it should be noticed that the Hisense ANA HS-E260T only equipped with 512 MB RAM, it is estimated to be get stuck when running Android system, without mention large games, what’s worse, there is only 4GB memory for the machine, therefore, you shall not expect to run two systems in the machine at the same time. besides, although it is officially claimed that the machine is equipped with 200 Mpi camera (without flashlight), while actually it is interpolated from the 0.3 Mpi camera.

Hisense NANA

In other sides, Hisense NANA is equipped with 480×854 pixel screen of 5 inches, applies Qualcomm Snapdragon MSM8610 double core processor of 1.2GHz, supports SD cards extension, provides CDMA+GSM two models, dual cards and single standby, the volume is 142.50X72.94X10.68mm and the weight is 150g. Android for WP machine sounds good, but actual effects are doubtful.

MediaTek not release cheap processor for Windows Phone devices in 2014

MediaTek is now becoming the hottest chipset for mobile device, since MediaTek is offers high-performance and low price processor for Android-based mobile phone and tablet devices, but MediaTek don’t expect to release chipset that support Windows Phone in 2014.

Microsoft will offers free license for Windows Phone OS

According to foreign media reports, Microsoft has been considering the launch of Windows Phone in the free version, there is evidence that Microsoft had recently doing the MoU (memorandum of understanding) with several smart phones manufacturer.

While Microsoft declined to discuss individual free licensing deal, but it is clear that any free agreement are directly related to Microsoft and Google competing Android operating system. Microsoft has said it will reduce or waive the discussion of the HTC Windows Phone licensing fees, making this handset manufacturers agree to its operating system as another option in addition to the Android.

We should see more Android and Windows “dual boot” smart phones in the future. Microsoft also is cutting the Windows desktop version of the license fee, in an effort to attract more low-cost PC, Tablet PCs and laptops.

Microsoft is currently receive the fee from other smartphone manufacturers, the cost is estimated between $5 to $15 USD. If Microsoft is ready to give up fees in some markets, it should be to increase the number of Windows Phone handsets in the market.

Huawei Ascend W2 will hit the market in the end of November

Huawei is trying to buy Nokia

Huawei is trying to make a good market, as the better step, according to Richard Yu, chairman of Huawei’s consumer business group, Huawei would consider buying Nokia to help it become the world’s leading smartphone maker.

Yu said that Huawei is always “open mind” to acquisition the Nokia, but her didn’t tell the detail about those aquisition, it seems Huawei is still negotiating with Nokia, and Yu said that the selling of Windows Phone device is quite hard for now.

The Windows Phone market share is small and Huawei have to spend the license fee for Windows Phone device, this is different with Android since there is no license’s fee for Android platform.

Nokia comment about HTC Windows Phone device

At the launch of the Samsung Ative S as the first Windows Phone 8 smartphone in the world, Nokia did not say anything. In fact they consider that Ativ S as a warm up before the actual event. Then, how their attitudes toward and HTC launch HTC 8S and 8X?

It seems that the same attitude is shown by the Finnish mobile phone manufacturer. It is their stated after The Verge asking comments on the two mobile phones Nokia Windows Phone 8 is the latest devices from HTC.

HTC was the first vendor to propose an Android OS, but gradually dimmed its luster somewhat hindered by Samsung. Then there is the rumors says that Taiwanese manufacturer will change their strategy?

Initially HTC does have a lot of variants of Android smartphone compared to other mobile phone manufacturers, but now it Samsung gain the most benefit from Android OS,

According to Canaccord Genuity analyst Michael Walkley, users generally prefer Samsung rather than HTC phones. This is evidenced by the sale of his best-selling Galaxy S III when compared to the HTC One X that appears first.

“We believe that customers in would choose the Samsung Galaxy S III than HTC One X when they want to buy a high-end Android smartphone,” Walkley said.

Given this reality, HTC is rumored to bet the future will focus more on Windows Phone 8 rather than Android, but the news was denied by Jason Mackenzie as President Sales & Marketing of HTC.

“We feel very strongly because it supported many operators from around the world, including the United States. Our plan is to be great with Windows 8,” he said.

Focus on developing a Windows Phone 8 does not mean HTC will abandon Android, Mackenzie confirmed that the company will continue poured Android devices according to their capacity.

HTC seems to released few new device, after we’ve unveiled the leak photo of mysterious phablet device from HTC, It’s now there is Windows Phone 8 smartphone from the Taiwanese electronic company, the new phone is rumored to go by the name HTC 8x.
