Xiaomi has been using MIUI to power all of its smartphones for over a decade. The company has made a lot of progress recently, and MIUI 14 was touted as being the best and lightest version yet. It even had some neat features, at least in China.

However, Xiaomi has now announced a new operating system called HyperOS, which is essentially the death knell for MIUI. HyperOS is said to have the smallest firmware size in the industry, as well as security, performance, and multitasking improvements.

The gist of the new HyperOS

Xiaomi detailed HyperOS in many words but we’ll keep it short and sweet for you. Starting off, there are changes in the user interface. You get many more customization options for the lockscreen with new templates, fonts, and widgets. The control center has seen refinement and looks more streamlined than the MIUI 14. However, the app icons in HyperOS appear similar to MIUI 14.

Security and firmware size

Xiaomi also added new security features, including a self-developed TEE security system, which processes sensitive content separately. It offers transparent and controllable internet permissions, ensuring complete visibility into every connection.

Xiaomi says HyperOS’ firmware size can be changed to fit different hardware needs. Notably, the mobile phone firmware is very small at just 8.75GB, making it the smallest in the industry.

AI features

HyperOS includes a built-in AI large model that powers features such as Xiaoai Input Assistant for text creation, WPS Document Scanning for text recognition in documents, AI Wonderful Painting for converting doodles into paintings, and AI Image Search for intuitive image retrieval. Cross-device collaboration

Notably, the new operating system also brings seamless cross-device collaboration, letting apps use the hardware of multiple devices. For example, Camera Collaboration lets you use your phone’s rear camera in a PC video conference for better video quality.

Network Collaboration boosts connectivity by letting devices access a phone’s 5G network for fast and reliable connections. And Cross-Device Focus Notification lets you share notifications between devices, so you can see your phone’s taxi info on your TV, for example.

Performance

HyperOS is apparently the most significant overhaul of Xiaomi’s operating system to date. This transformation includes enhanced memory management, which delivers significantly faster startup speeds and improved background app performance.

The upcoming Xiaomi 14 series, launching on October 26, is the company’s latest attempt to impress flagship smartphone buyers. Xiaomi 14 design and display

Xiaomi took a more minimalist design approach with the Xiaomi 13 series, especially the Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro. The company used flat iPhone-like edges and a flat display on the front of the vanilla model. The camera module was redesigned to be square, housing three camera sensors with chic Leica branding. The Pro model, however, featured a curved display and slightly curved sides.

Xiaomi 14 Pro may bring even better display specifications, boasting a 6.7-inch Micro Quad Curved display with a dynamic 1-120Hz LTPO refresh rate, a 2K resolution, Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection, and remarkably slim 1mm ultra-narrow bezels.

With a peak brightness of 3,000 nits, this display is touted to be the brightest on any smartphone yet, surpassing the OnePlus Open with 2,800 nits brightness. The panel also offers HDR 10+, Dolby Vision, and Pro Colour Tuning. There is also a 2K+Hz PWM dimming to reduce eye strain.

Cameras, processor, battery, and more

The Xiaomi 14 duo is expected to come with top-notch hardware. Both phones will likely be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 processor, LPDDR5x RAM, and UFS 4 storage. They may also feature a large VC liquid cooling system for heat dissipation.

iQOO has launched the Neo 8 in China with 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage. The new version is priced at 3,699 Yuan ($505). For reference, the 12GB RAM + 256GB storage variant of the handset costs 2,499 Yuan ($354), while the 12GB RAM + 516GB storage version is priced at 2,599 Yuan ($396). Samsung Exynos 1480 chip runs Geekbench, might debut with Galaxy A55

Samsung is not giving up on Exynos chips; in fact, it is coming back stronger next year with new Exynos processors. Recently, the company made the Exynos 2400 SoC official, featuring an RDNA 3 GPU. This chip is intended to power the Galaxy S24 series and is expected to compete with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. Samsung might also be planning to refresh its mid-range lineup, as a new Exynos 1480 chip has appeared on Geekbench. Here are the details.

Exynos 1480 performs better than Exynos 1380, of course

Exynos 1480 has appeared on Geekbench with model number S5E8845. The listing reveals the chipset will get an octa-core architecture with four efficiency cores clocked at 2.05GHz and the rest four performance cores at 2.75GHz. Exynos 1480 will have a base frequency of 2.05GHz and will be paired with Samsung’s Xclipse 530 GPU, possibly designed on AMD’s RDNA 2 graphics architecture similar.

Geekbench reveals the Exynos 1480 has achieved 882 points in the single-core test and 2808 points in the multi-core test. These scores may not be very impressive, especially considering that the chipset will power the Galaxy A55, a premium mid-range smartphone. However, when compared to the Exynos 1380, the performance is not too bad. For reference, the Galaxy A54 with the Exynos 1380 scored 776 points in Geekbench 5’s single-core test and 2599 points in the multi-core test.

The Geekbench listing confirms a recent Galaxy Club report that the Galaxy A55 with Exynos 1480 is already being tested. The phone is expected to debut in the first quarter of next year, just like the Galaxy A54. Apart from the chipset, you may not see many upgrades to the phone.

Xiaomi is ready to replace MIUI with a new operating system, HyperOS. MIUI currently powers all Xiaomi, Redmi, and Poco devices, and has seen 14 iterations so far. The custom software is known for its heavy customizations and an overall look inspired by Apple’s iOS. However, MIUI will soon be a thing of the past, as the company will introduce the new HyperOS with the Xiaomi 14 series. While we wait, some leaked screenshots of the upcoming OS reveal some nitty-gritty details.

HyperOS could bring more lockscreen customizations

According to screenshots shared by Weibo users, the upcoming Xiaomi HyperOS will offer significantly more customization options for the lock screen. Users will be able to choose from new types of templates, clocks, fonts, and widgets, and will have more detailed wallpaper customization options. The control center on the new software also appears to be more streamlined compared to MIUI 14, although the app icons remain the same.

Galaxy S10 gets an unexpected update months after Samsung ended its software support

Galaxy S10 is Samsung’s first 5G phone from 2019. The handset did a solid 4 years in the market before Samsung discontinued its software updates on June 2023. However, the handset has now received an unexpected update, reminding us of the popular Vince Carter meme doing rounds with caption “I got one more in me”. Alongside the Galaxy S10, the Galaxy S10e and the Galaxy S10+ have also received the new update. Here are the details.

The update might not extend to all regions

As reported by Sammobile, the Galaxy S10, Galaxy S10e, and the Galaxy S10+ are receiving a new update on the Telcel network in Mexico. To everyone’s surprise, the update brings the latest September 2023 patch in tow and has the firmware version HWI1. It remains to be seen if the update will extend to other regions as well.

The chances of other regions getting the new update are unlikely. As we mentioned, Samsung has already ended support for the Galaxy S10. And the other two models, the Galaxy S10e and S10+, were also dropped from the support list in April 2023. It’s possible that Telcel Mexico is just feeling generous and gave their customers an additional update. Or maybe Samsung detected a serious vulnerability and decided to roll out a fix, which is not uncommon.

While the three aforementioned Samsung phones no longer receive updates, there’s one Galaxy S10 series model that will continue to receive updates until 2024 — the Galaxy S10 Lite. And that’s not because Samsung is particularly fond of the device, but because it was launched a year after the original four Galaxy S10 devices.

Now, the company has announced the ColorOS 14 public beta program for the Find X6, Find X5, Reno 10 Pro+, and Reno 9 Pro+. Oppo is starting to recruit beta testers in China today for the next two days. The company will review the candidates within 5 days and begin rolling out the update shortly.

Huawei has launched a new laptop in the Chinese market. The product in question is called the MateBook D 14 SE. It brings a sleek design and powerful specs under the hood. The laptop has a 14-inch IPS display as well as a 13th-generation Intel Core i5 processor. Here’s what you need to know.

There is support for multi-device collaboration, allowing seamless wireless connections with headphones, smartphones, tablets, monitors, and smart displays. Huawei MateBook D 14 SE notebook is now available for pre-order on JD.com for 3,999 yuan (approximately $559.86 USD). The Google Pixel 8 and 8 Pro debuted earlier this month. And while we were just starting to make peace with their underwhelming GPU performance and heating issues, a new problem has begun to emerge. Users of the new Pixel phones are reporting that they are unable to launch the Android Auto app. Google has also stepped in to help by urging affected users to send a diagnosis report.

Older Pixel phones don’t have this issue

Pixel 8 and Pixel Pro users on Google’s forums are reporting that Android Auto isn’t working for them (Via autoevolution). Even though their phones connect to the head unit and start charging, the Android Auto app never launches. These users also say that they never had this problem with their older Pixel phones, including the Pixel 7 and even the Pixel 3.

Google has not yet rolled out a fix, but an official from the Android Auto team has stepped in to offer help, or we could say, is asking users to help Google. “It would be great if you could send us a bug report from your phone to diagnose the root cause of the issue. We’ll send an email with instructions on how to capture a bug report,” wrote an Android Auto team community specialist in response to a user’s complaint.

As Bogdan Popa writes for autoevolution, it’s perplexing for users when “a Google phone running Google software on a Google operating system” is affected by bugs. Currently, there’s no news as to when Google could fix the issue. We hope to learn more in the coming days.

Voice and Video calls might also be coming soon

Android Authority has discovered new strings in the latest beta version of X for Android, which shed light on the upcoming Enhanced Discovery feature. The presence of strings labeled “blue_upsell,” suggests this feature will be exclusively available to X Premium subscribers. The outlet notes this unannounced feature aims to let users discover content that is closely aligned with the subject matter of their posts.

The latest beta version of X also includes evidence of audio and video calling features, which indicates that these features will be available soon. This is in line with Elon Musk’s confirmation back in August, when he revealed that voice and video calls would be available on both iOS and Android devices, without requiring a phone number to make a call.

Currently, there’s no timeline as to when these new features will be rolled out to the users. Separately, Elon Musk hinted last month that all X users may soon have to pay monthly fees to use the platform. In a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Musk mentioned a “small monthly payment for use of the X system” can help in dealing with the “vast armies of bots” on the microblogging website.

The controversies and rumors surrounding Huawei’s Kirin 9000s chip have not ceased, and the lack of official information is only making it worse. Last month, a research firm revealed the processor, believed to be manufactured by SMIC on a 7nm process, is actually based on a 14nm node and has been modified to be closer to 7nm. This was a rather surprising development. However, a tipster has now shared speculations about the Kirin 9000s actually being a 5nm TSMC-made Kirin 9000 chip from 3 years ago.

Huawei “successfully pranked the whole world,” said tipster

Tipster RGcloudS claims on X that the Kirin 9000s is not a 7nm chipset from SMIC, but rather the Kirin 9000 chip produced using a 5nm process by TSMC. To support these claims, the tipster has shared a picture from the teardown of the Mate 60 Pro. This image reveals the Kirin 9000s with a date stamp indicating 2035, signifying that this particular chip was manufactured during the 35th week of 2020, specifically between August 24th and August 30th, 2020.

Oppo is launching the Find N3 in China on October 19. The same smartphone is expected to make it to the global market as the OnePlus Open. The foldable is expected to bring many upgrades as compared to its predecessor. This includes a new design and color options. Earlier this week we saw the phone in a red color option clad with Faux leather. Now, a popular tipster Evan Blass has shared live images of Oppo Find N3 in gold.

Oppo Find N3 is launching on October 19

As seen in the images, the Oppo Find N3 has a large circular camera module with three camera sensors and the Hasselblad branding. The back of the smartphone appears to be glass and the frame is likely metallic. The images also confirm the presence of a USB-C port at the bottom with speakers and a SIM card slot. The foldable will also be offered in Black and Green.

Reports suggest the Find N3 is slightly thicker but lighter than the Huawei Mate X3. The book-style foldable is measured to be 12.44mm thick and weighs 244.8g. In comparison, the Mate X3 measures 11.8mm and weighs 248.9 grams. The Find N3’s display is not as tall as other foldables in the market. It is supposed to have a 7.82-inch AMOLED inner display and a 6.31-inch AMOLED outer display, both with a 120Hz refresh rate.

However, the handset’s camera prowess will be on par with even the best flagship phones. It is expected to come with a 48MP main camera, a 48MP ultrawide sensor, and a 64MP telephoto shooter. Under the hood, the Find N3 will pack the last year’s Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC. It will be fueled by a 4,805mAh battery with support for 100W charging.

You may be aware that Huawei recently launched a new Kirin chipset called the Kirin 9000s, which supports 5G and raises questions about US restrictions. Huawei hasn’t officially provided detailed information about this new chipset yet, and now a leaker claims that another Kirin chipset might be launched by the end of this year. This processor is said to belong to the Kirin 8 series and could make its debut with the Huawei Nova 12 series. Here are the details.

Kirin 830 might debut later this year

A Chinese tipster on Weibo claims that Huawei will be launching a new Kirin 8 series chipset later this year (Via GSMArena). Although the tipster didn’t specify the name of the chip, an earlier leak revealed the upcoming Nova 12 smartphone with an unreleased Kirin 830 chip. However, it looks like only the vanilla model will get this alleged chip, while the Nova 12 Pro will feature the Kirin 9000s, the same chip that powers the Huawei Mate 60 series.

Both these speakers are packed with many new-to-Sonos features and now they have been launched in India as well.

What do Sonos Era 300 and 100 bring to the table?

Sonos Era 300 and Era 100 bring a rather different design than the rest of the Sonos speaker lineup. The Era 300 looks like a thick hourglass, featuring six powerful drivers that direct sound in various directions. The 10.2 x 7.3 x 6.3-inch Era 300 supports Spatial Audio (aka Dolby Atmos for Music) and is the first Sonos speaker to provide multi-channel surround sound for home cinemas.

You can pair two Era 300s as rear speakers with an Arc or Beam (Gen 2) soundbar and a Sub to create a home theater arrangement. Both speakers support Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa. You can connect to them via Bluetooth and Wi-Fi and charge via a USB-C port. The user interface has also seen changes with new touch controls for volume. Then there is TruePlay, Sonos’ room correction software that automatically measures the room and makes adjustments accordingly.

The Sonos Era 100 is priced in India at Rs. 29,999 (approximately $370), while the Sonos Era 300 is priced at Rs. 54,999 (around $675). Both speakers are offered in black and white. You can purchase them starting October 20. Pre-orders begin on October 15 on the Sonos website.

The Redmi Note 13 series was unveiled last month in China. Similar to last year, the lineup includes three phones— Note 13, Note 13 Pro, and the Note 13 Pro Plus. While the vanilla model is for those of you who are looking for a budget phone, the Pro phones are aimed at more premium buyers. These phones have yet to make their debut in the global market, but it seems we won’t have to wait for long as the series has obtained IMDA certification.

Mukul Sharma has spotted two Redmi Note 13 series smartphones on Singapore’s IMDA website. The smartphone with model number 2312DRAABG appears to be the standard Redmi Note 13, and the 2312RA50G might be the Note 13 Pro or Pro Plus. The listing did not reveal any details about the two phones, but it suggests a global launch might be imminent. There’s no official confirmation from Xiaomi as of yet, but the Note 13 series might make its global debut early next year.

The Pro model is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7s Gen 2 chipset while the Pro Plus gets the Dimensity 7200 Ultra chip under the hood. Both phones get up to 16GB RAM and 512GB of onboard storage.

The two phones get a 200MP Samsung ISOCELL HP3 primary rear sensor with optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8MP sensor with an ultra-wide angle lens, a 2MP macro sensor at the back, and a 16-megapixel sensor at the front. The Note 13 Pro has a 5,100mAh battery with 67W fast charging support. Note 13 Pro Plus (full review), on the other hand, gets a 5,000mAh battery with 120W fast charging support.

Nothing announces its expansion into fashion, say hi to Nothing Apparel

As a tech site, this is beyond our usual coverage, but technology brand Nothing now makes clothes, yes. But you shouldn’t be surprised since the maker of Nothing Phone (1), Phone (2), and a variety of other electronics recently also announced a Lager beer. The new product is called Nothing Apparel and the company describes it as a uniform for the designers, and engineers.

Nothing entered the smartphone industry with ambitions to do something out of the box, and while their smartphones are indeed unique, that wasn’t enough. The company seems to be branching into the fashion industry with the new Nothing Apparel.

The Carl Pei-led startup says “Nothing apparel is a uniform for the designers, engineers. The creators. Anybody that wants to make something new happen. Inspired by our hardware, classic factory wear and our unmistakable visual identity, this is Nothing’s design ethos in textile form.” Nothing says the workwear is conceptualized in collaboration with Swedish consumer electronics company Teenage Engineering.

The new line of clothing will reflect the classic style of factory workers who build tech products. The first pieces will be on sale at Dover Street Market in London until October 15, or until they sell out. More pieces will be released later at the Nothing Store in Soho.

Nothing Apparel isn’t the new product we were expecting from the startup, but it’s still pretty cool. And can you imagine all the puns you’ll get to make if you wear it? (“I’m wearing Nothing!” is the first one that comes to mind.) Also, props to Nothing for not using the semi-transparent design of its smartphones on the Nothing Apparel.

Oppo Find N3 Flip launched in India with revamped design, 50MP triple camera, Dimensity 9200

The Oppo Find N2 Flip was Oppo’s first foldable phone to make its way out of China. This clamshell foldable was unveiled earlier this year with a ton of interesting features and a large cover screen. However, there was still room for improvement, and Oppo aims to address those areas with the new Find N3 Flip. This handset has just been announced in India and comes equipped with a 50MP triple camera setup and a borrowed feature from OnePlus phones—an alert slider. Let’s take a closer look at what the new Find N3 Flip brings to the table.

Find N3 Flip Specifications

The first thing you’ll notice on the Find N3 Flip is the new design. While it still retains the rectangular cover screen, the camera module is now circular. Another thing you’ll see is the new alert slider, which is usually found on OnePlus smartphones. A Hasselblad branding can be seen in the camera module, which houses three sensors. Not just the design, Oppo has also upgraded the build quality. The device now comes with a new hinge mechanism, claimed to be durable in extreme conditions like -20°C to 50°C.

Oppo Find N3 Flip is built around an inner screen measuring 6.80 inches and an outer screen measuring 3.26 inches. Powering the clamshell foldable is the MediaTek Dimensity 9200 SoC, paired with 12GB of LPDDR5x RAM paired with 256GB of UFS 4.0 storage. As for the camera setup, the Find N3 Flip brags a 50MP Sony IMX890 main camera (with OIS), a 32MP IMX709 telephoto camera (with AF support), and a 48MP IMX581 ultra-wide-angle lens on the rear. The selfies are taken care of by a 32MP Sony IMX709 sensor.

In the software department, the Find N3 Flip runs ColorOS 13.2 based on Android 13. Oppo promises 4 years of OS updates and 5 years of security patches. It is powered by a 4,300mAh battery with 44W fast charging. Other features include Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 5.3, NFC, and various audio codecs like SBC, AAC, aptX, aptX HD, LDAC, and LHDC.

Magic Vs 2 could be thinner than Magic Vs

Bhavya Siddappa, Honor’s global marketing and communications lead, has shared an image on X, teasing the new Magic Vs 2. The smartphone is pictured in a blue color finish that has a sparkling effect. There’s a triple-camera setup similar to Magic V2. It’s hard to tell from the image if the device will be as thin as the Magic V2, which measures only 9.9 mm when closed. However, the Magic Vs 2 is supposed to be thinner than the Magic Vs, which has a 6.1 mm profile when unfolded.

Honor is ready to launch the Magic Vs 2 on October 12 alongside the Honor Watch 4 Pro, which might also have been featured in the same picture. The handset is expected to bring a mild spec bump over last year’s Magic Vs. A recent benchmark from Geekbench suggested the Vs 2 will be powered by the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 chipset and 16 GB RAM.

It is expected to have a 50 MP main camera, a 50 MP ultra-wide, and an 8 MP telephoto shooter. Magic Vs 2 might support 66W charging. The new PS5 brings a smaller form factor

Sony says the new PS5 model, often referred to as PS5 Slim, brings the same technology features that make PS5 the best to play packed into a smaller form factor. As per the company, the new PS5 has been reduced in volume by more than 30%, and weight by 18% and 24% compared to the previous models. It has four separate cover panels, with the top portion in a glossy look, while the bottom remains matte.

Sony now has added a bulge at the side of the PS5 for the disc drive, which can be removed and replaced. Additionally, on each side, there are now two slits, and at the front, instead of the single USB-C and USB-A ports found on the current PS5, you’ll find dual USB-C ports. Sony will include a horizontal stand with the new PS5 model. The company has also introduced a vertical stand, compatible with all PS5 models. But you’ll need to get it separately for $29.99.

In the United States, the PS5 equipped with an Ultra HD Blu-ray disc drive will be available at a price of $499.99, whereas the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at $449.99. For European customers, the prices will be set at 549.99 EUR for the standard model and 449.99 EUR for the Digital Edition. In the UK, the standard PS5 will be priced at 479.99 GBP, while the PS5 Digital Edition will cost 389.99 GBP. In Japan, the standard PS5 will be available at 66,980 JPY, and the PS5 Digital Edition will be priced at 59,980 JPY.

Samsung urges Apple to adopt RCS in its own snarky way

Google has been taunting Apple for not adopting the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol for over a year now. The company even launched a campaign called ‘Get The Message’ to pressure the iPhone maker into adopting the messaging protocol, but Apple didn’t bother to listen. Now, Samsung has joined the search giant in urging the Cupertino company to embrace RCS, and it has done so in its own sarcastic way.

“Help Apple,” says Samsung

Samsung has released a new video on YouTube, which calls for Apple to adopt RCS. The video, titled “Green bubbles and blue bubbles want to be together,” shows a Romeo and Juliet-style conversation between two users who want to be together, but are kept apart by one of their parents (hinting at Apple’s stubbornness to support RCS in iMessage). “What did green ever do to them? We’re bubbles too,” one of them asks. The touching video from Samsung supports Google’s existing #GetTheMessage campaign.

RCS is supposed to be an upgrade over the existing messaging protocol, SMS, which lacks encryption, group messaging, or animated stickers. RCS chats are meant to give you a rich messaging experience by showing you when someone is typing, offering read receipts, and allowing you to send messages over mobile data or Wi-Fi. You can also share large files and high-resolution photos using RCS. The new protocol is available on all Android phones.

For RCS to be effective, it must be implemented on all smartphones, including iPhones. However, Apple has been reluctant to embrace the new protocol, presumably because the Cupertino company doesn’t want to relinquish its ecosystem lock-in. While the likelihood of Apple willingly adopting RCS is slim, regulators, such as the EU, might force it to open up its messaging services. That said, you can still try RCS on iPhones using this third party app.

Reno 8 users get an early look at Android 14

The ColorOS 14 beta program was announced for the Oppo Reno 8 Pro+ back in August, and now the Reno 8 has also been added to the roster. Oppo is recruiting internal beta testers from China starting today. However, there’s no news about the beta testing extending to the global market.

Currently, the Find X6 Pro, OnePlus 11, Reno 9 Pro, and handful of other Oppo phones are eligible to sign up for ColorOS 14 beta. However, the testing is limited to China. The company even released a detailed schedule earlier today, revealing when major Oppo flagships and mid-rangers will receive the ColorOS 14 beta update. As mentioned, the OS itself will be unveiled on November 16.

Oppo is yet to detail the major changes included in the ColorOS 14 update. Since it is based on Android 14, you can expect it to bring the new features Google introduced. Google might have remedied Pixel 6 and 7 heating issues with Android 14

The Pixel 6 is where the Pixel series’ redemption arc began. Google managed to impress many with the new design of the Pixel 6 phones and the intelligence-focused Tensor G1 chip. However, enthusiasm among users soon turned into disappointment when the Tensor-equipped phones started getting hot. The Pixel 7 series with Tensor G2 also wasn’t untouched by heating problems. And while we are patiently waiting to cover Pixel 8 series overheating complaints, some Redditors suggest Google might have remedied the issue on the older Pixels with the Android 14 update.

Battery life has also seen improvements

Pixel 6 and Pixel 7 owners on Reddit are reporting that their phone is not heating up as much as it used to and running a lot smoother on Android 14 (Via Android Police). The users claim the battery life also has increased seemingly due to the CPU not working as hard. Google has not provided specific details regarding any adjustments in Android 14 aimed at addressing overheating concerns on its Pixel phones. Some speculations suggest that Google may have fine-tuned the CPU scheduler to optimize the usage of the powerful CPU cores.

This is a welcome improvement, as Pixel smartphones are often reported to run too hot. Unlike its BBK siblings Oppo and Vivo, OnePlus hasn’t launched a foldable phone yet. The company confirmed earlier this year that a folding phone will launch soon, and today we get an official teaser of what is supposed to be called the OnePlus Open. The Chinese brand has yet to reveal a launch date, but the teaser might suggest a launch sometime later this month.

OnePlus Open is closing in on its debut

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), OnePlus teased an upcoming smartphone with the caption ‘A true OnePlus experience awaits. Opening soon.’ The silhouette of the phone confirms it’s a foldable phone, and the wordplay in the caption points to the name we have been hearing for a couple of months—the OnePlus Open.

The upcoming OnePlus foldable phone is rumored to be a rebranded Oppo Find N3 Fold. This is supported by a recent Geekbench listing of the phone, as well as images of Indian actress Anushka Sharma using a device that matches previous renders of the Find N3 Fold. This is actually good news since Oppo’s book-style foldables are pretty good but they are not released outside China.

Previous leaks suggest the OnePlus Open will debut in India on October 19. As for the specifications, the OnePlus Open is likely to feature a 7.8-inch 2K internal display with a 120Hz refresh rate. The foldable phone is expected to be powered by a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC paired with 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. PBKreviews decided to put the Pixel 8 Pro through some rigorous testing. The YouTuber started by dropping the phone from waist height with the screen facing the concrete. The Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the Pixel 8 Pro easily managed to handle the drop without any visible damage.

Later, the YouTuber dropped it from head height, and although it sounded painful, the handset had no major scratches on the front and back. The same tests were carried out with the phone’s back facing the concrete, and there were no notable scratches.

PBKreviews tested the Pixel 8 Pro’s scratch by putting it inside a bag of sand and gravel and rubbing it against it. Surprisingly, the Google flagship managed to remain almost scratchless.

The YouTuber observed that the Galaxy S23 Ultra and iPhone 15 Pro Max sustained more damage than the tested phone in the same drop and scratch tests. Overall, the tested phone handled drops and scratches very well.

The most impressive aspect was the phone’s ability to withstand drops on the screen side, both from waist and head height, without cracking. This is unusual in drop tests on concrete surfaces, as phones typically crack their screens when dropped from waist height, and those that survive that often crack from head height drops (except for phones like the Mate 60 Pro, which features Kunlun glass).

The YouTuber concluded that the tested phone has better durability than the iPhone 15 Pro Max, but not as good as the 14 Pro Max.

Exynos 2400’s GPU performance supposedly better than Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, key specs leak

Exynos chipsets are reportedly returning in 2024 with the Galaxy S24 series. Although not all regions will have to deal with the new chip, it will still reach a sizeable number of users. Past leaks have revealed the S24 models will be powered by the Exynos 2400, a 10-core chipset with a new Xclipse 940 GPU. Now the processor has emerged on a benchmarking platform, boasting GPU score better than Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Here are the details.

Exynos 2400 might not catch up with Snapdragon 8 Gen 3

Tipster @Tech_Reve recently shared two screenshots comparing the performance of the Exynos 2400 chip with Qualcomm’s flagship Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 using Powerboard 4.0 benchmarks. In a head-to-head GPU showdown, the Xclipse 940 GPU (developed in collaboration with AMD) delivered a slightly lower score compared to the Adreno 740 found in the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. Specifically, the Xclipse 940 achieved a score of 1,656 points at 1080p resolution, while the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2’s Adreno 740 averaged 1,561 points at the same resolution.

This is not exactly good news since the Exynos 2400 barely beat the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2, which is now a year older SoC. You will likely not find this gap if the comparison was with the upcoming Snapdragon 8 Gen 3. But since neither the Galaxy S24 nor the Exynos 2400 are official yet, we’ll give Samsung the benefit of the doubt.

Earlier rumors suggest that the new Exynos SoC will have a 10-core CPU with a 1+2+3+4 core architecture. The single Cortex-X4 core will be clocked at 3.10GHz, while the two Cortex-A720 cores will run at 2.9GHz, and the three Cortex-A720 cores at 2.6GHz. The remaining four Cortex-A520 cores will be clocked at 1.8GHz. All of the cores will be based on the ARMv9 architecture.

Amazon Great Indian Festival, the e-commerce giant’s annual mega sale, starts from 8th October onwards and prime members will get early access to the sale on 7th October. Brands have started to announce tempting offers ahead of the sale. And the latest deals are from iQOO. The Vivo sub-brand has revealed the iQOO Neo 7 Pro, iQOO Z7s, iQOO 11, and iQOO 9, among other phones will be generously discounted during the sale.

iQOO smartphones just got more affordable

Although a bunch of iQOO smartphones are discounted, the iQOO Z7 Pro is the sweetest deal. The handset is powered by the Dimensity 7200 5G processor. It also gets a 64 MP OIS Camera and a 3D Curved 120Hz AMOLED Display. The iQOO Neo 7 Pro was launched in India for Rs. 34,999 ($429) but you will be able to grab the phone for just Rs. 30,999 ($379) during the sale.

The vanilla iQOO Neo 7 with MediaTek Dimensity 8200 chipset, 120W FlashCharging, and impressive 120Hz AMOLED display, is also available at a discounted rate. It was unveiled with a price tag of Rs. 27,999 ($341) but will be reduced to Rs. 25,999 ($318) during the Amazon Great India festival.

Phones like the iQOO 11 and iQOO 9 will also be seeing a price cut. And the affordable options like the iQOO Z6 Lite and iQOO Z7s will also be discounted. The table below shows you all the discounted iQOO phones with their launch prices for comparison.
