Huawei Preparing it’s Own Voice Assistant to Pitch Against Google Assistant

When we talk about virtual voice assistants, the two names that come to mind immediately are Amazon Alexa and Google Assistant. While Google dominates the Android smartphone segment with its data-driven assistant, Alexa has carved out a niche of its own in the new smart speaker segment. However, if fresh news is to be believed, Huawei might soon join the race with the likes of Samsung and numerous other smartphone OEMs.

Richard Yu, CEO of Consumer Electronics at Huawei was quoted by CNBC in an exclusive interview as saying, ” In the beginning, we are mainly using Google Assistant and Amazon Alexa” for its AI Cube and smartphones, he said. “We need more time to build our AI (artificial intelligence) services … Later we will expand this outside of China.”

Huawei already has a China-centric voice assistant called XiaoYi, not to be confused with the similarly named Xiao AI of Xiaomi. The world number two brand also recently unveiled the Huawei AI Cube which is the company’s first AI-powered smart speaker. Yu stated that until their own voice assistant is ready for prime time, they will continue using Google and Amazon’s offerings in their global products.

Despite the executive’s statement, much about the voice assistant remains unknown. There’s no detail on what languages it will support on debut nor the time of its unveiling itself or even what it will be called outside of China. However, it seems the ever-growing popularity of voice assistants has attracted the Chinese giant’s attention and it wants a share of the pie.

Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 scores 362,292 on AnTuTu, highest yet for an Android device

Qualcomm is reportedly working on its new flagship chipset which is expected to be unveiled by the end of this year. The upcoming flagship chipset is the successor of the Snapdragon 845, is rumored to be called Snapdragon 8150 and not Snapdragon 855.

Now, ahead of the official announcement of the Snapdragon 8150, the chipset’s benchmark score has surfaced online through AnTuTu. The chipset has scored 362,292 points on AnTuTu, making it the first chipset running on Android platform to have crossed the benchmark of 360,000 points.

In comparison, the Huawei Mate 20 series devices running on Kirin 980 chipset managed to score an average of 311,840 points while the highest score so far for the Qualcomm Snapdragon 845-powered device is currently held by Xiaomi’s Black Shark Helo smartphone which scored 301,757 points.

Based on the results, it appears that the Snapdragon 8150 is providing 16 percent better performance compared to the Huawei‘s Kirin 980 and 20 percent better performance than its predecessor, the Snapdragon 845. The score of the Snapdragon 8150 could also increase after a bit of optimization by the manufacturers.

Recently, a Geekbech listing revealed that the chipset logged a score of 3,281 in the single-core test, and 11,023 in the multi-core test. These scores are higher than Snapdragon 845 that logged a score of 2,500 in single-core test and 8,900 in multi-core test.

The Qualcomm Snapdragon 8150 is expected to come with three-cluster CPU core design, similar to Kirin 980 and Exynos 9820. It will feature one large performance core running at a clock speed of 2.84GHz, three medium cores clocked at 2.4GHz, and four small efficiency cores clocked at 1.78GHz. It will pack Andreno 640 GPU that is claimed to offer 20 percent better performance compared to Adreno 630.

The chipset is expected to be manufactured using the newest 7nm process by TSMC and the die size is going to be 12.4 x 12.4mm. While the chipset is expected to be announced next month, the devices running on Snapdragon 8150 are expected to be available from the first half of 2019. Meizu is expected to be among the first to launch device powered by SD8150 SoC.

OPPO A7 likely to debut on November 22

OPPO A7 has been in the rumors since several weeks. The entire specs of the smartphone have surfaced through recent leaks, but OPPO is yet to confirm on its launch date. Fresh information suggests that the company may launch the smartphone on Nov. 22 in China.

The OPPO A7 is yet another mid-range phone from the Chinese manufacturer. The handset will be equipped with a 6.2-inch LCD screen that will feature a waterdrop notch. It is expected to carry support for HD+ resolution of 720 x 1520 pixels. The side bezels of the phone are thin, but its bottom bezel is a bit thick.

The low powered Snapdragon 450 will be at the helm of the device. The handset is expected to arrive in two models. The base model may feature 3 GB of RAM and 32 GB of internal storage. The higher variant is expected to be packed with 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of native storage. The smartphone will also feature a microSD card slot for more storage.

A 13-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual camera arranged in horizontal design is placed on the backside of the OPPO A7. A fingerprint scanner is placed on the back panel of the phone. For snapping selfies, the handset features a front-facing camera of 16-megapixel. The handset receives power from a 4,230mAh battery.

The OPPO A7 appears to be rebranded version of the Realme 2 that is available for buying exclusively through online channels. The A7 could be aimed towards offline markets. The only difference between the two handsets is that the Realme features an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. The OPPO A7 is expected to arrive in color choices such as Glaring Gold and Glaze Blue.

OPPO is yet to confirm on the Nov. 22 launch date of the smartphone. The handset is expected to be priced around 1,599 Yuan (~$230) in China. Google Camera gets Night Sight update on all Pixel devices

Google Camera is receiving a new update with the all-new Night Sight feature. Google announced it at the launch event of Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. It allows cameras to capture photos in low-light environments and helps to improve the overall light in the final processed image. The update is rolling out to all Pixel devices as of now, but the Search giant has said that the new feature will work best in the Pixel 3 series.

Until now, almost every smartphone was having the issue of bad quality photos taken in the night time or in low light environments. To cure it, Google has added a new Night Sight feature, which helps the smartphone to capture crispier and lightened up photos. It will provide well-lit shots in dim lighting conditions. Google has already demoed the feature at the launch event, and later we have also tested it and found that the whole algorithm is quite impressive.

It can create lightened-up photo shots in dark environments. Though, Google has said that it will work better with Pixel 3 series as it is compatible with its learning based white balancer.

Samsung Galaxy S10 to have three variants; components sourced from Chinese suppliers

Samsung is currently preparing to launch its next-generation Galaxy S-series smartphone early next year. As per the reports, the company will be launching three variants in the new Galaxy S10 lineup instead of the usual two.

Moreover, the latest report indicates that the South Korean company is also shifting its supplier framework. Samsung is reportedly increasing its dependence on Chinese manufacturers its upcoming smartphones. While the reason behind such move is not yet known, it could be the declining smartphone profits and increased technical capabilities of Chinese manufacturers.

As per the report, Samsung will source the Galaxy S10 lineup’s antennas from China. Samsung’s flagship smartphones use integrated antennas which combine Near Field Communication (NFC), Magnetic Secure Transmission (MST) and Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) antennas.

Samsung’s Galaxy S-series devices usually feature antennas manufactured primarily by Samsung’s subsidiaries and by Korean manufacturers, especially Samsung Electro-Mechanics and Amotek. Currently, there are six Chinese companies supplying antenna to Samsung.

For the 5G variant of the Galaxy S10, the latest report indicates that Samsung won’t be using Qualcomm-branded chips. The company is reportedly in the process of developing its own 5G-compatible communication processor. The device is likely to come with Samsung’s newly-announced Exynos 9820 chipset and the Exynos 5100 modem.

The company will reportedly launch three variants of the Galaxy S10 early next year, probably in February during Mobile World Congress — SM-G970F, SM-G973F & SM-G975F. Two of them will feature a 5.8-inch display while the third one will be the successor of the Galaxy S9 Plus.

The Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus will come with a triple-camera setup on the back, similar to what we’ve seen on Galaxy A7 2018. The Galaxy S10 Lite, on the other hand, is expected to come with flat display and side-mounted fingerprint sensor.

Recent reports suggest that the Galaxy S10 could sport ‘Infinity-O display’ as well as an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner. The base model could pack 4GB of RAM and the top-end model may include 6GB of RAM. As for the software, we are expected Android Pie-based Samsung One UI, which was recently unveiled by Samsung.

Supply chain analysis reveals how Samsung managed to make a foldable smartphone

Samsung recently showcased its prototype foldable smartphone with Infinity Flex Display at Samsung Developer Conference, which turns into a tablet from a smartphone when the display is unfolded. However, the company has not talked about the technology which enables making such foldable devices.

Even though Samsung remains silent on the technology, a Korean publication connected the dots using a trail of reports and supply chain analysis, revealing how the South Korean giant managed to make a foldable smartphone.

It seems that Samsung has ditched the all-glass concept and has adopted the high-tech polymers with its trusted and long-term technology partners. Apparently, the South Korean giant has collaborated with the Japenese firm Sumitomo Chemical for producing a “luxurious” to the touch transparent polyimide that can be bent numerous times without any visible differences.

The transparent polyimide layer is attached to a flexible OLED panel directly underneath. It is attached using an extremely durable and flexible adhesive which Samsung has been developing for years. It allows the whole package to bend at the middle. The adhesive will also be able to stretch to a certain extent and will hold onto the package.

This adhesive from Samsung is called Optical Transparent Adhesive or OCA film, which is a special type of elasticized adhesive that can be bent thousands of times and still retain its original size and form. Further, it’s reported that the flexible OLED panel that Samsung is using has about 45 percent thinner polarizer.

As per the report, another Japanese supplier, Nichido Denko, is producing the polarizer film for the bendable display. Interestingly, the OLED display panel used in the Galaxy F smartphone is the same that’s used in the current Galaxy S9 or Note 9 models.

Another important part of the foldable smartphone is the stretchy hinge and the report mentions that the hinge will be sourced locally by Samsung from a company named KH Vatec. Samsung has put in a lot of time and effort with KH Vatec to develop the seemingly elastic and stretching hinge that sits right beneath the foldable display.

While Samsung has showcased its foldable smartphone, the actual commercial model is expected to be the Samsung Galaxy F or a part of Galaxy F-series. The company is yet to address the overall protection of the smartphone, user case scenarios, ergonomic issues, and software.

It’s been just a week, since the Cosmo Communicator has hit the crowdfunding website, Indiegogo. Its sudden surge in crowdfunding has given us a glimpse of idea’s popularity. It is generally a PDA/Laptop form-factor based Android device which can be used to perform tasks which we usually do on the large screen devices. It can be unfolded into a full-fledged laptop, and it carries multiple displays. It is developed by Planet Computers which already has experience in developing these kinds of devices.

In a span of just seven days, Cosmo Communicator has hit over 350% of its target and still, three weeks are left. It has already exceeded the expectations, while in the coming days we can expect it to get much more funding. There’s a lot more that Cosmo Communicator is offering at the price of $550 (early-bird price).

It carries multiple displays, one on the interior of the flap and one on the exterior side. Precisely, Cosmo Communicator is packed with a 5.99 inch of LCD primary touchscreen and a 2-inch colored touchscreen display (exterior side). Xiaomi now recruiting Mi A2 Lite Android Pie Beta testers

Xiaomi added a Lite version to the Mi A2 when it was launched recently. The new, trimmed down version is no doubt aimed at fully utilizing the popularity of Xiaomi’s stock Android-running smartphone series. The Mi A2 and A2 Lite continued where the Mi A1 stopped by launching with stock Android Oreo OS under Google’s Android One programme.

There are indications that the Mi A2 Lite may soon get Android Pie update as Xiaomi has commenced recruitment of beta testers who will be early adopters and will actively report back if bugs are detected. Of course, this is only open to Mi A2 Lite owners and they must install the QQ app that is used for official communication for bugs and features. Of course, you have to speak English and know the basics of porting ROMs. In addition, intending beta testers are required to be active on the MIUI forum and willing to get into discussions with other members of the program.

Interested Mi A2 Lite users who are interested will need to download the MIUI Global Forum app on Google Play store. They will also be required to provide their phone’s IMEI and complete an online form. The application terminates this weekend and thereafter, Xiaomi will reach out to users the company has selected.

Since September, Xiaomi has been releasing MIUI 10 Global Stable update for is smartphones. The POCO F1 was recently treated with MIUI 10 Global Stable ROM at the beginning of this month. Now the same update has been made available to Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 4X and Redmi Note 6 Pro smartphones.

The Redmi Note 6 Pro has released in few markets such as Thailand and Indonesia. It is yet to arrive in major markets like China and India, but the Chinese manufacturer has now made the Android 8.1 Oreo based MIUI 10 Global Stable ROM available for it. The ROM can be installed manually by navigating to Settings > About Phone > System Update > Choose Update and then select the download file to install MIUI 10 Global Stable ROM.

The Chinese manufacturer has also released MIUI 10 Global Stable for Redmi Note 4/4X phone. The new update can be flashed after downloading it from this link. Owners of the Redmi Note 4/4X should be aware of the fact that the update is based on Android Nougat.

Every design maniac would prefer Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite to its opponents because it features the most beautiful aesthetics. Back in August, Xiaomi launched a new Aqara Gateway Hub that not only works with the Mijia app but also works with Apple Homekit. The added support for Apple HomeKit means owners will be able to control their smart products with the Siri voice assistant.

The Aqara Gateway Hub is now on sale and is priced at ¥299 (~$43). Xiaomi says it will also work with its own Xiao Ai voice assistant. Connection to the hub is either via Wi-Fi (2.4GHz only) or Zigbee.

The Aqara Gateway Hub can be linked with up to 32 smart devices including smart lights, the Aqara flood sensor, wireless switches, wall sockets, body sensor, temperature and humidity sensor, and Aqara motorized curtain.

When connected to the Apple HomeKit, users will be able to use Siri on their iPhone, iPad, Apple Watch or HomePod to control any of the smart devices. All you have to say is “Hey Siri” and ask it to turn on/off the light or lower the temperature.

OnePlus 6T is the first OnePlus phone to come preinstalled with Android 9 Pie OS. The Chinese manufacturer has released OxygenOS 9.0 based Pie update for the OnePlus 6 smartphone around two months ago. The next OnePlus phones that are waiting in queue are OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T. The Android Pie update could be arriving soon to OnePlus 5 and 5T phones soon since the Chinese manufacturer has released open beta version of the latest Android version for these phones in China.

OnePlus phones that are sold outside of China come with Oxygen OS whereas its handsets released in China feature Hydrogen OS. The Chinese manufacturer has released Hydrogen OS 9.0 based Android 9 Pie open beta version for OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T smartphones. The new update brings full screen touch gestures for the OnePlus 5T. This feature is not available on the OnePlus 5 since it is equipped with physical buttons below the display.

The management of apps that run in the background have been reworked to deliver smoother experience. Users can select a default SIM for a particular contact or group.
