Huawei to release four new smart home products alongside Mate 20 in China

Huawei has scheduled the Mate 20 series launch on October 26 in China. While everything is known about the three models (including the gaming-centric Mate 20 X) except for their official Chinese pricing, it looks like we’ll see more products at the event. The company’s official smart home weibo account has released four new teasers which give us a basic idea of the upcoming products.

From the released posters, it looks like the four products could be: smart speaker, air purifier, smart cameras and a smart door lock. Huawei may not have a huge portfolio of smart home products like Xiaomi but the company does offer products like smart routers. So, we could see some really interesting additions to the company’s IoT product range at the event.

Mate 20 turned out to be one of the biggest launches of Huawei this year. The phone comes feature packed with things like the new Kirin 980 chipset, 6GB RAM, reverse wireless charging, and a beautiful design making for a well-balanced flagship smartphone of 2018. Despite its high price tag, the phone should be popular in its home country.

Google Pixel 3 XL fares well in durability test, but you may want to put back cover

Google recently launched its third-generation of Pixel series smartphones — Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Unlike the previous generation models, the new-generation phones come with the back panel made up of glass.

With the introduction of the glass back panel, the company was able to introduce support for wireless charging. However, what concerns the most people related to the glass panel is the durability.

Google Pixel 3 All colors

Thanks to Zack Nelson from JerryRigEverything YouTube channel, we now know what happens when the Pixel 3-series phone goes through a round of torture tests. From the video, we can see that the device stands up to almost everything what was thrown at it, thanks to the Gorilla Glass 5.

While the glass is durable, the device easily left permanent damage and markings on the frosted/matte glass portion of the Pixel 3 XL phone. Rubbing materials like coins on the back of the phone leaves marks that could be rubbed off, but keys and other such sharp or semi-sharp objects left deep gouges that are permanent.

The phone’s aluminium edges are covered in a plastic-like coating and could easily be scrapped away by applying some force. But, it seems that the fingerprint sensor’s functionality does not get affected even with a few scratches on it.

As for the burn test, the screen of the Pixel 3 XL withstood an open flame for about 30 seconds before the pixels became completely dead, which recovered soon after. It appears that the phone had no flex-related issues and also passed the bend test, without any cracks.

Samsung Galaxy S Light/Lite Luxury Edition price gets slashed

The Samsung Galaxy S Light/Lite Luxury Edition was announced back in May in China. The phone has a similar design to last year’s Galaxy S8 but packs less powerful specs. Five months after its release, the phone has gotten a price cut.

Galaxy S Light Luxury Edition price cut

Originally sold for ¥3999 (~$575), the phone is now priced at ¥2699 (~$389) – ¥1300 off its launch price. There are a handful of phones from other manufacturers with the same processor that are sold for way less but there are people out there that the Galaxy S Light Luxury Edition appeals to and who don’t want to shell out a lot for the more expensive S and Note series flagships. Plus the Galaxy S Light has some high-end features you won’t find on these cheaper alternatives.

The Galaxy S Light Luxury Edition has a 5.8-inch curved Super AMOLED display with a Full HD+ resolution. It is powered by the Snapdragon 660 and has 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.

There is a 16MP f/1.7 sensor on its back and an 8MP f/1.7 front-facing auto-focus camera. The phone has an Iris Scanner and also sports a fingerprint sensor beside the rear camera. There is NFC, Bluetooth 5.0, a USB-C port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The Galaxy S Light Luxury Edition has an IP68 rating, packs a 3,000mAh battery and has support for wireless charging. It also has dual SIM support (hybrid slot), comes with Bixby and is available in a gorgeous Burgundy Red color variant.

OPPO Find X and F7 delisted from 3DMark benchmark after proofs they “cheated”

Huawei was recently caught in the web of alleged benchmark cheating when it was discovered that the company’s phones are built to detect benchmark apps by their names. As a result, the phones run at optimal performance thus, achieve higher scores in benchmark apps. OPPO was also accused of engaging in the same practice and now, UL Benchmarks have delisted the OPPO Find X and F7 from its database.

Oppo Find X

UL Benchmarks is the makers of benchmarking app 3DMark and according to the report, the firm decided to analyse the benchmark results of both OPPO models after several accusations. The company tested the models using a private 3D Mark app that isn’t available to users or phone manufacturers. In the end, both models were discovered to have achieved scores that were up to 41% higher with the public app, than when tested with the private apps.

Just like Huawei, OPPO did not deny the finding but admitted that when its phones detect that the user is running applications like games or 3D Benchmarks that require high performance, the SoC then runs at full speed for the smoothest experience. Some may not view this entirely as cheating but it clearly violates UL benchmark’s rule on the ways a smartphone can interact with its benchmarking software. It also calls to question the dependence of many phone users on benchmark performance to choose a new phone.

Samsung will launch a Snapdragon 710 phone in January 2019

This year we have seen manufacturers who prefer in-house chipset for some of its phones adopt that of competitors. The Honor 8X Max, for example, comes with a Snapdragon 636 or Snapdragon 660 processor. Also, Samsung’s Galaxy S Light/Lite Luxury Edition and Galaxy A9 (2018) are both powered by the Snapdragon 660. The trend will continue next year, at least for Samsung.

Snapdragon 710 featured

A tweet by Twitter user @MMDDJ_ has revealed that the Korean giant will launch a phone powered by a Snapdragon 710 processor in January. This will make it Samsung’s most powerful mid-range phone and likely, most expensive too. The rest of the specs are still unknown but expect it to have impressive cameras too.

This doesn’t come as a big surprise. Samsung is trying new strategies to take on its rivals in markets like India. These rivals (OPPO, Xiaomi, and Vivo) already have phones powered by this chipset. If Samsung wants to take on them, it will have to adopt the same chipset since none of its mid-range Exynos processors are that powerful.

Smartisan Nut Pro 2 is the cheapest phone with 256GB of storage you can buy

Smartisan’s Nut Pro 2 might be a year old already but it packs the same specs present in a lot of phones released this year. If you are on the lookout for a phone with a large storage (read 256GB) that doesn’t break the bank, then the Nut Pro 2 is a great choice.

Smartisan Nut Pro 2 256GB price slash

Samsung Galaxy S10 Exynos variant to feature an advanced SLP circuit board

According to the latest report from Korean media, the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S10 smartphone will come with an advanced SPL (Substrate Like PCB) circuit board. The report also mentions that this will be for the Exynos variant of the phone only, and not the Snapdragon variant.

Earlier, it was reported that the Samsung Galaxy S9 also comes with the space-saving PCB in the Exynos variant but not in the Qualcomm-based chipset variant because of the “technical difficulties” in Qualcomm’s chipset to use such advanced system boards. It seems that the same difficulties are still present with the upcoming Galaxy S10 as well.

Samsung Galaxy S10 SLP Circuit Board

With the SLP motherboards, the chips are stacked or packed together, which helps in making their footprint much smaller. While most of today’s phones use 10 layers of copper on the PCB, the stacked SLP uses 20, permitting higher density of components in a given surface area. This makes extra space inside for other component, such as a larger battery, however, it’s not confirmed how the company plans to utilise the extra space.

Apple utilised the same design for its last year’s iPhone X, which follows in its successors too, enabling the company to introduce a bigger L-shaped battery inside. The SLP market is estimated at $1.9 billion in 2016 and $2.24 billion by 2023, with a 64 percent CAGR between 2017 and 2023.

The Samsung Galaxy S10 is expected to come in three models — SM-G970F, SM-G975F and SM-G973F. All three models of the Galaxy S10 have now been certified by China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology otherwise known as TENAA.

As per the previous reports, the SM-G970 and SM-G973 models are expected to be equipped with a 5.8-inch display with a single selfie camera and dual rear cameras. On the other hand, the SM-G975 model is expected to be the Galaxy S10 Plus, featuring five cameras; a triple rear camera setup and two front cameras. It will also feature a bigger 6.44-inch display. It is unclear whether there are design differences between the three phones.

The phone is also expected to feature an ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor. In addition, there are reports that Samsung is still preparing the 5G version of the Galaxy S10. The 5G versions may only be available in specific markets such as the US and South Korea. We expect to know more details related to the Galaxy S10 as the phone’s launch nears.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 faster wireless charging support officially confirmed

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s that was announced in March this year is the company’s smartphone to carry support for wireless charging. Today, Xiaomi has confirmed that the MI MIX 3 that is launching on Oct. 25 will be equipped with faster wireless charging technology.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2s carries support for Qi standard 7.5W wireless charging which is the same wireless charging rate supported by the Apple iPhone X from last year. The newly announced Huawei Mate 20 series of flagship phones are equipped with faster 15W wireless charging technology. Now that Xiaomi has confirmed that faster wireless charging is arriving on the Mi MIX 3, it may carry support for 10W or higher faster wireless charging technology.

Xiaomi MIX MIX 3 faster wireless charging

Xiaomi Director of Product Management Donovan Sung has revealed that the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 will carry support for 960fps slow-motion video shooting which is on par with recent flagship phones such as Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and Huawei Mate 20 Pro. This could mean that the MI MIX 3 will be arriving with new memory enabled camera sensors.

Xiaomi has already confirmed that the Mi MIX 3 is equipped with LED-enabled dual front-facing cameras. The smartphone was recently spotted in a leaked video that suggested that the Mi MIX 3 will offer an impressive screen-to-body ratio of around 95 percent. The Snapdragon 845 chipset will be the driving force of the smartphone. Initial reports have claimed that it will be equipped with an in-screen fingerprint reader, but a recent leak had revealed that it will be coming with a regular rear-facing fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi has claimed that the Mi MIX 3 will be the first smartphone to arrive with 10 GB of RAM and it will also carry for 5G connectivity. The rumored regular variants of the Mi MIX 3 include 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage, 8 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 256 GB storage.  The handset is expected to arrive in the market in color options like Black, Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue.

Huawei P20 drops from the 21st floor, some features still work!

Can your phone survive a fall from the 21st floor of a building and still work? We doubt if even the rugged smartphones around like Blackview, Nomu models can survive that. But a user of the Huawei P20 has an interesting story to tell after his phone accidentally slipped and fell while he was at the balcony of the 21st floor of a building. The owner had expected the phone to disintegrate completely when it hit the ground but that didn’t happen. Sure, the P20 model took some heavy bashing as a result of the fall but curiously, the phone did not stop working. As can be seen on the pictures shared, the phone still stayed powered on.

According to the owner, some features even continued working seamlessly. Features such as Face Unlock, fingerprint sensor, Bluetooth. Apart from physical damage to the fuselage and a broken rear camera, other features and apps such as the internet connection, WeChat etc still works normally. You can even receive calls with the phone.huawei P20

This obviously extols the build quality of the P20 as the height is more than 50 metres and way above the 50 metres drop-standard of most mobile phones. So, the device was just plain lucky to have survived the fall from such a height. Huawei China has offered to fix the phone. We’re sure the company may end up doling out a new one. It is also adviced that users get a protective casing.

Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 960 fps slow motion sample and 3D face unlock videos released

On Thursday, Xiaomi will be announcing the Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 smartphone. One of the improvements that will be arriving on the Mi MIX 3 is the inclusion of 960fps slow motion video shooting.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S that was released earlier this year carries support for 720p and 1080p slow-motion video shooting at 240fps. Donovan Sung who is Xiaomi’ Director of Product Management has shared a new twee that showcases the marvelous 960fps slow-motion video shooting prowess of the upcoming Mi MIX 3 smartphone.

Rival flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 and the recently announced Huawei Mate 20 Pro carry support for 960fps 1080p slow-motion video shooting. Even though the Mi MIX 2s is powered by the same Snapdragon 845 SoC that is present under the hood of the upcoming Mi MIX 3, the Mi MIX 2S did not support 960fps slow-motion video recording because it didn’t feature an image sensor with on-board memory. This indicates that the Mi MIX 3 will be arriving with improved dual rear cameras.

Another video that showcases the 3D face unlock of the Mi MIX 3. As it can be seen in the video below. After sliding the screen and moving it back to its original in a fraction of a second, the Mi MIX 3 takes just over a second to get unlocked.

A leaked photo of the real Mi MIX 3 smartphone had appeared in the previous week. It had revealed that the smartphone may offer nearly 95 percent screen space thanks to its slim bezels. The Chinese manufacturer has confirmed that the handset is equipped with 24-megapixel dual selfie shooters with flash.

Even though the rumor mill has been claiming that the MI MIX 3 will be arriving with an in-screen fingerprint reader, another leaked photo had shown the presence of a rear-facing fingerprint scanner. The handset is expected to arrive in the market in colors like Black, Emerald Green and Sapphire Blue.

The Upcoming Honor Watch could be a Hybrid, Registrations start tomorrow

Honor will announce a brand new Honor Watch smartwatch alongside the Honor Magic 2 flagship on October 31. Before the official launch, the watch is up for registrations starting tomorrow. The teaser poster also reveals a few details about the watch including its basic design.

Honor-Watch-Registrations-China

We are used to seeing beautiful watches from Honor’s parent company, Huawei, like the new Huawei Watch GT. On the other hand, Honor has usually stuck to smart bands and the most smartwatch-like device from the brand has been the two-year-old Honor Watch S1. However, this might change with the new Honor Watch as the first image of the device shows promise. The design is very much like the Huawei Watch GT with a circular dial and two buttons on the side.

Honor Watch close up
Honor Watch close up

What’s interesting is that the watch seems to have physical hands. We can’t confirm it for sure, but the hands seem to be very prominent in the pictures. A hybrid watch would make sense to some extent since Honor leans towards the affordable market and a smartwatch hybrid would be a much cheaper and good looking option than something like a full-fledged smartwatch similar to the Huawei Watch GT.

The Honor Watch goes up for registrations from tomorrow (October 23) at 10:08AM on VMall, JD.com and Suning. So, we are expecting more details soon.

The Nokia X7 will launch globally as the Nokia 8.1 not 7.1 Plus

The Nokia X6 launched globally as the Nokia 6.1 Plus and the Nokia X5 is sold outside China as the Nokia 5.1 Plus. Following this trend, it means the global variant of the Nokia X7 should go by the Nokia 7.1 Plus, right? Wrong!

A few days ago, a device called the Nokia 8.1 was seen on Geekbench. We were a bit disappointed to learn that the successor to the Nokia 8 will come with a mid-range processor and not the Snapdragon 845. It turns out that that the Nokia 8.1 is the global version of the Nokia X7.

The decision to change the name was made by Juho Sarvikas, chief product manager at HMD Global according to a tweet by @Nokia anew. The account claims they were informed of the name change by unnamed sources.

Further explanations by Phonearena reveal HMD Global is converting the Nokia 8 series into an upper mid-range series while the Nokia 9 PureView will be the company’s flagship model scheduled to launch early next year.

Honor Magic 2 shows up on TENAA with six cameras, Android Pie and more

The Honor Magic 2 launches next week but you don’t have to wait that long to know what its specs are. Two variants of the phone have popped up on TENAA baring it all and believe us when we say the Magic 2 is packed!

The two variants are the Honor TNY-AL00 and the Honor TNY-TL00. The differences between both phones are the memory and storage configuration.

Honor Magic 2

The Honor Magic 2 packs a 6.39-inch AMOLED screen with a 2340 x 1080. Unfortunately, TENAA hasn’t provided any images yet. Powering the phone is a 2.6GHz octa-core processor which we already know is the Kirin 980. The TNY-TL00 model has 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage while the TNY-AL00 model comes in two variants – one has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage and the other has 8GB of RAM and a 256GB ROM.

The Magic 2 goes the way of the Mate 20 series and packs triple rear cameras. They aren’t LEICA branded but they are higher than that of the Mate 20. So you get a 16MP + 24MP + 16MP combo. Honor doesn’t stop there. The phone also has triple front-facing cameras, the first for a mobile phone – bringing the number of cameras on this phone to 6 in total.

The front cameras are a 16MP sensor paired with a 20MP sensor and a 2MP sensor. A tweet by Huawei Club says the last two cameras are 3D TOF (Time of Flight) lens. Based on what we know about ToF technology, we know it can be used for 3D face mapping for face unlock, gesture control, AR, and Mixed Reality gaming.

TENAA confirms the phone has an in-display fingerprint scanner but won’t have an audio jack as it mentions a 3.5mm audio adapter. It will run Android 9 Pie out of the box and pack a 3,400mAh battery. We already know it will have support for 40W fast charging but we have no confirmation about support for wireless charging.

Meizu M8 Note launch to be online-only, Beijing event cancelled

Just after announcing the Meizu M8 Note launch at the Beijing Performing Arts Center on October 25, now Meizu has suddenly canceled the event. Meizu has cited some “site reasons” behind the cancellation of the launch event. The event site, Beijing Performing Arts center has some issues which led to the cancellation of the event.  Well, it seems quite absurd as many OEMs launch their devices at the same venue and has never met with these issues.

Well, whatever the actual reason is, it will remain under wraps as no one is going to give an explanation about it. So, for now, users can stick with the online broadcast at 19:30 Beijing Time (11:30 AM GMT) on October 25th. We will share the live streaming details on the day of Meizu M8 Note launch.
