OPPO unveiled a new sub-brand dubbed Realme in India in May this year. The new sub-brand had as its first model the Realme 1 which was sold exclusively online. That sub-brand has now being freed from the shackles of the main OPPO brand and will now exist as a separate independent brand. OPPO’s Vice President Sky Li has announced that he is stepping down to take over the reins as CEO of the Realme brand.
In a letter to employees of the new Realme brand, Sky Li who was also head of OPPO’s overseas business introduced the new brand and also mentioned that the idea of creating the brand was born at the end of last year. The press release also gave an insight into the brand’s plans and target market. The statement quoted Gartner’s report which identified Central and Eastern Europe, Middle East and Africa and some Asian countries as emerging markets and so will be the target of the new brand. The company expects sales to increase by 9% by the end of 2018. Therefore, Realme is planning to provide “products with strong performance and stylish design” in an attempt to capture these emerging markets.
This business model is similar to what Peter Lau did when he left OPPO and registered OnePlus. Of course, OnePlus still remains a BBK subsidiary just like OPPO and perhaps Realme. The difference is that while OnePlus targets the flagship segment, while the Realme target market is the mid-range segment. It is left to be seen how the new brand will fare among brands such as Tecno, Infinix, Gionee, and others that already target these markets.
Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition turned out to be an instant hit. The device has courted a high level of attention since its launch alongside the Mi 8 and Mi 8SE. The model recently went on sale for the first time and that too as a hit. A new TENAA listing for the device has been spotted and it points to a slightly modified variant.
The Mi 8 Explorer Edition had earlier gotten certified by TENAA but this is obviously a different model as it has a different model number. While the first listing had the model number M1807E8S, the new model has the model number M1807E8A. Apart from that, the design looks quite different. In this case, the front camera looks to be closer to the earpiece on this model whereas it is farther apart on the model already launched.
As you’re aware, the standout feature on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition is the translucent back but the device also comes with 3D Face unlock as well as on-screen fingerprint technology. It is possible this model will not have the 3D face unlock. In addition, this model has a 4GB RAM variant in addition to 6GB of RAM and 8GB of RAM. The Mi 8 Explorer edition was only released with 8GB of RAM onboard.
This model is listed with a 6.21-inch AMOLED display with a resolution of 2248×1080 pixels resolution. The device is also expected to pack a Snapdragon 845 chipset. If Xiaomi should launch this in due course, the price tag would likely be lower than the present model which is priced around $530 in China.
At this particular time of the year, different brands publish their Q2 financial report. While some brands would come out with good news, others would perform below expectations and that is the case with Sony. According to its Q2 financial report released Tuesday, Sony shipped just 2 million phones between April and June (Q2) which is below the 3.4 million units shipped in Q2 2017. This isn’t a good news for a brand that is struggling with the market.
The brand also posted a Q2 2018 revenue of just $1.18 billion in revenue and if compared to the previous year, that is a 27% decline in revenue. This drop in sales can be attributed to the weak performance in the Japanese and European markets, its main strongholds.
As a result of this, the company has lowered its revenue expectations for the year. Before now, the original equipment manufacturer(OEM) projected a revenue of $5.47 billion which would account for 9 million units by the end of 2018, but with this Q2 report, Sony is now planning to slash down it cost so as to make some profit in the remaining quarters of the year.
The OPPO F9 Pro is one of two new OPPO phones expected to launch soon. Thanks to teaser posters and leaked images, we know OPPO has redesigned the notch (and screen). It has even named it “Waterdrop Screen” based on the shape of the notch.
Today, specs said to be that of the OPPO F9 Pro have surfaced online. There is no way to confirm they are genuine, so we advise you take them with a pinch of salt.
The F9 Pro is said to pack a 6.3-inch IPS LCD display with a 2280 x 1080 display and Gorilla Glass. That resolution translates into a 19:9 aspect ratio. For the processor, OPPO is going with MediaTek’s Helio P60 chipset and have paired it with 6GB of RAM.
The source says the phone will come with 128GB of storage and will support expansion by up to an additional 256GB. With respect to cameras, the OPPO F9 Pro will come with a 25MP selfie camera and dual 16MP cameras on its back.
The OPPO F9 Pro will run Android 8.0 Oreo, have dual-SIM support, a fingerprint scanner, and support for VoLTE and Indian 4G bands. It will also pack a 3400mAh battery. An official teaser already confirmed it will have support for VOOC fast charging.
ASUS unveiled the Zenfone 5Z back at MWC but as it is typical of ASUS, availability wasn’t until June. In its home country of Taiwan, the variants sold there have just 6GB of RAM. If you have been waiting for the 8GB version, then you should be able to purchase one starting tomorrow.
ASUS itself has announced that the 8GB version of the Zenfone 5Z which has 256GB of storage will be available on August 1 in Taiwan. Although they did not reveal the price, it is believed it will be priced at about NT$16,000 (~$525) based on the price of the same variant in India.
The Zenfone 5Z has a 6.2-inch FHD+ display with an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 processor. There are dual cameras on its rear in a 12MP + 8MP configuration and an 8MP selfie camera nestled within the notch.
Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is expected to go official on August 9 but it is yet to be confirmed when the device will be released. That has now been confirmed by a new pre-launch poster that was spotted in a carrier’s store in Korea. The poster indicated August 24th as the official release date in Korea and perhaps some other regions. The poster also revealed that the presale will commence on August 10, a day after the Galaxy Unpacked launch event.
As usual, those who pre-order the device would surely get their new phone first before others and the pre-order is bundled with lots of amazing gifts, such as cases, car chargers, grip rings, power banks, wireless pads and other items. Of course, not all of the gift items will be available in other countries outside South Korea.
The Galaxy Note 9 is expected to come with a number of features. One of such is the big memory configuration 6GB/128GB and 8GB/512GB which would be available for the domestic Korean market only. Another feature is the large 4000mAh battery capacity and the amazing Bluetooth S Pen which would allow one to control music, games, camera and so on.
Xiaomi has launched a new product under its crowdfunding platform. The product is a trash bin but just not any trash bin, a smart trash bin. Now, the bin won’t dispose of your trash for you automatically. Nope, this isn’t a robot but it can help users by performing some functions that ensure safer handling of waste.
The main feature of the trash bin is the lid which opens automatically using induction. The lid is air tight and so can effectively block odour from coming out thus, it won’t attract flies. The device comes with a smart sensor which detects the human hand or other approaching objects within a distance of 0-35cm. When it senses and object, the lid swings open and so you won’t need to touch it at all or even bend over. The smart trash bin can also automatically package the waste when it is full. It can also automatically replace the waste bag when the old one is removed.
In terms of dimension, it is 40cm high, weighs 3.5kg and has a 15.5L capacity with a beige appearance. The product is priced at just 199 yuan ($29) and as stated, it is on crowdfunding on Xiaomi Youpin. The fundraiser has been a massive success as the product has raked in over 11,000 support. It is expected to ship on September 11.
Xiaomi recently launched its new Android One smartphone — Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite. The company has already scheduled a launch event in India on August 8 where it’ll launch the Mi A2. Now, it has been revealed that the phone will be available exclusively via Amazon India.
Previous reports have revealed that the phone’s basic model with 4GB RAM and 32GB storage won’t be launched in India. Further, the Indian unit of the Mi A2 will support Quick Charge 4.0 instead of Qualcomm’s Quick Charge 3.0.
The Mi A2 features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ IPS LCD display with 2160 x 1080 pixels and 2.5D curved glass. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 octa-core processor along with Adreno 512 GPU.
In India, the smartphone will be launched in two variants — 4GB RAM with 64GB internal storage and 6GB RAM with 128GB internal storage. There’s also a microSD card slot that enables users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity.
Coming to the camera department, the phone sports a 12-megapixel primary camera with Sony IMX486 sensor, LED flash, f/1.75 aperture and a 20-megapixel secondary sensor with Sony IMX376 sensor with f/1.75 aperture. On the front side, there’s a 20-megapixel snapper with Sony IMX376 sensor with Soft-LED flash.
The phone comes with a fingerprint sensor on the back panel. Connectivity options on the device include Dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 ac (2.4GHz / 5GHz), Bluetooth 5 LE, GPS + GLONASS, and USB Type-C. As the Mi A2 is a part of Google’s Android One program, the phone runs on stock Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box and is powered by a 3,010mAh battery.
The Indian variant of Mi A2 will see the addition of fourth color option — Rose Gold, along with Gold, Black, and Blue colors. In Europe, the phone is priced at 249 Euros (approximately $291 / Rs. 20,000), but we expect India pricing to be lower.
The smartphone market today isn’t like what it used to be in years before now. Lots of brands are trooping in with amazing devices giving the older brands a good run for their money. Samsung just released its financial report detailing the firm’s earnings for the second quarter of 2018. The report shows the company made a gross earning of KRW58.48 trillion (around $52.2 billion) in sales. On the other hand, the company’s operating profit is reported to be KRW 14.87 trillion. This is slightly lower than the profits recorded in the first quarter of 2018 but almost on par with Samsung’s earnings in Q2 2017.
Samsung attributed the slight drop in its profits in Q2 to the low demand and sales of “smartphones and display panels”. Samsung’s major smartphone released in the first quarter was the Galaxy S9 models. According to Samsung, the device is not performing well in the market as its sales margin is low.
The low sale of the Galaxy S9 is as a result of competition from lower-priced handsets. Xiaomi and Huawei, has been doing well in this aspect, forming very formidable rivals to Samsung in China, India, etc. The IT & Mobile Communications division which handles Galaxy smartphones experienced a 20% fall in sales from KRW30 trillion to KRW24 trillion on a yearly basis. However, with the expected launch of the Galaxy Note 9 as well as its Galaxy Tab model which should be on sale before the end of Q3, Samsung believes that demand for its tablet and smartphones would increase in the second half of the year.
On the other hand, Samsung experienced an amazing strong profit in its Semiconductor Business (NAND and DRAM memory chips) reaching the highest sales and revenue ever with over 37% of the overall sales and nearly 80% of the total profit for the quarter. With the growing demand for flexible OLED panels, the sale of the chipset is expected to be maintained in the remaining months of the year.
ChinaJoy begins in a few days and quite a number of manufacturers are expected to be in attendance. Some will be showing off already existing products while others like Xiaomi will be unveiling new ones. It has also been reported that Black Shark will bring two new products to the event.
The teaser poster shows a cloaked Jedi with a green lightsaber. If you look closely at the weapon, you can see the word “1MORE” written on it. For those who don’t know, 1More is actually the brand that makes Xiaomi’s earphones, so we presume one of the products is a gaming headset made by 1More but for Black Shark.
There is no clue for the second product but it is rumored to be gaming-related and may even be an accessory for the Black Shark Gaming Phone.
Huawei today released its financial report for the first half of 2018. The report shows the tech giant recorded a gross sales revenue of 325.7 billion yuan. The revenue for the first half of 2018 represents an increase of 15% over the same period last year. The figures also include an operating profit margin of 14%.
The company hinted that it aspires to improve on its operational efficiency and the quality of its operations. The company also expects its growth momentum and financial standing to continue to rise all throughout the year.
Huawei’s steady rise which is gradually threatening the top 2 global smartphone market leaders Samsung and Apple could be traced to the remodelling of its business strategy. Huawei’s Consumer Business arm has continued to create value for customers through technological innovations. This is seen in the innovations in photography and artificial intelligence (AI) on its latest P20 flagship models. In addition, the revolutionary GPU turbo technology which was unveiled recently for Huawei phones is another innovation which sets the company apart from its competitors. In the PC aspect, the new Matebook X Pro laptop with a stunning full-screen design received lots of accolades from the media when it was unveiled. The laptop established Huawei’s presence in the high-end laptop market.
It didn’t come as a surprise, therefore, that the company is listed among the 2018 global Fortune 500 companies. Huawei’s ranking grew from 83 in 2017 to 72 this year. The Chinese company hinted that its products and solutions are used in more than 170 countries and regions, serving one-third of the world’s population. In addition, 211 of the Fortune 500 companies, as well as 48 out of the top 100 companies globally, have chosen Huawei as a partner in digital transformation. It’s only a matter of time before Apple or Samsung gets dislodged from their top 2 spots.
Alongside the Honor Note 10, Honor also announced a new color variant for the Honor 10 GT. The new color variant is called Lily of the Valley and has the same color-changing appearance of some of Huawei’s other phones.
Honor says it is the first curved-back phone in the world with a color changing design. Depending on the angle you hold the phone, it can appear light green, pale red, or mint green.
The Honor 10 GT is the first phone from Honor to have 8GB of RAM. It has now been joined by the new Honor Note 10. It also has Huawei’s GPU turbo technology. Other than the above features, the rest of the specs are the same as that of the regular Honor 10.
So you get a 5.84-inch FHD+ display, a Kirin 970 processor, and 128GB of storage. It also has a 24MP + 16MP dual rear cameras and another 24MP selfie camera in front.
OnePlus has now taken the top position in India’s premium smartphone market, surpassing Samsung. According to the report from research agency Counterpoint, OnePlus grabbed 40 percent premium market share while Samsung’s market share compared to 34 percent market share in April-June time frame.
According to Counterpoint, the smartphone that sells for over Rs. 30,000 (approximately $435) falls under the premium category. After OnePlus and Samsung, Apple holds the third spot with about 14 percent market share.
This is the first time OnePlus has managed to grab the top position in India’s premium smartphone segment. The drop in the sales of flagship smartphones of Samsung and Apple also aided in the gains of OnePlus. In the report, Counterpoint added:
OnePlus surpassed Samsung to lead the premium smartphone segment for the first time ever for full quarter. This was due to strong sales of its flagship OnePlus 6 which was launched during the quarter… The brand is also capitalizing on strong word of mouth and leveraging social media effectively to reach out to its target user base.
The Counterpoint report also notes that fresh entries from Huawei, Vivo, Nokia, and LG also mixed up the market and got small slices of the pie. OnePlus has a strong presence in the Indian market, thanks to its value-for-money offerings.
The OnePlus 6’s pricing in India starts at Rs. 35,000 ($435) while the pricing of the Galaxy S9 Plus starts around Rs. 60,000 ($874). That surely contributed to the sales numbers given that price is a massive factor in the Indian market.
Interestingly, while OnePlus holds the top position in India’s premium smartphone market, it isn’t even in the top five list in overall market share. On the other hand, Samsung is the leading smartphone brand in India with about 29 percent market share while Xiaomi ranks second with around 28 percent market share.
Huawei is billed to be the first OEM to release the world’s first 5G-enabled smartphone and that is still on course to be released in June 2019. Ahead of that time, a report from DigiTimes just indicated that key suppliers to manufacturers the various components of the phone have been confirmed. The device has been confirmed to feature a new Cooling module which is to be produced exclusively by Taiwan-based Auras Technology. The various component and parts of the phone which has been ordered is expected to arrive before the end of the year
Auras technology’s chairman YS Lin is reported to have noted that 5G technology is more than 10 times faster than its 4G counterparts and as such devices ought to adopt high-performance thermal solutions. It is also gathered that the company started trial production last week and would start the fulfillment process (flow production) in September. This Cooling module is said to be made from copper sheets and would be 0.4mm thin which are capable of dissipating higher temperatures faster than graphite sheets found in current smartphones.
Mass production isn’t expected to be a big problem as the heat dissipation copper sheet is what is mostly applied in high-end slim notebooks today. It should be noted, that other phone manufacturers have also indicated interest in manufacturing 5G smartphone, so it’s unclear if Huawei would be the first brand to hit the market with the device. But either way, any manufacturer that plans to produce such phone, would still need a highly efficient cooling system. Most of them may likely also adopt the copper cooling sheet.

Smartphones are getting bigger every year and thanks to the reduction in the bezels around the display, their sizes have remained more or less the same. 6-inch flagships have become the norm this year, but there are a couple of devices which try to take smartphone screen sizes to the next level. Xiaomi’s Mi Max series started the trend of such large screen entertainment smartphones and even Honor joined the party with its own Note series back in 2016. Today, Huawei’s sub-brand is has launched the update to the two year old Note series smartphone, called the Honor Note 10. The phone joins the likes of the Mi Max 3 aimed at users who are looking for a phone bordering the size of a tablet.
Honor Note 10: Design
The Honor Note 10 is massive and that’s evident from its 6.95-inch 18.5:9 full screen display. Mind you, this is an AMOLED panel, unlike LCD on the Mi Max 3 and comes with 115% NTSC color gamut. The phone features 2.5D glass on the front and the back. The glass on the back has a special metal oxide nano-coating which makes it glitter under light. We are used to seeing special effects on the glass back of Honor smartphones, so this design was expected.
Apart from reducing the bezels around the display of the Honor Note 10, as compared to its predecessor, the Note 8, the phone is also narrower which will ensure that its easy to grip despite its huge display on board. There are two color options available, phantom blue (mixture of violet and blue) and magic night black.
As you might have already noticed, the Honor Note 10 ditches the notch, unlike other recent Honor smartphones, which is a welcome sign for notch haters.
Overall, the Honor Note 10 does pretty well for a nearly 7-inch monster smartphone. The front design is symmetric with minimal bezels, while the back with its special nano-coating looks beautiful. Design wise, you shouldn’t have any complaints.
Honor Note 10: Specs
Since the Note 10 is all about its 6.95-inch display, let’s talk about that first. The display is an AMOLED panel with 600 nits brightness and 70,000:1 contrast ratio. The phone supports HDR10 format, which means you get a better color range, making for a better viewing experience. For a smartphone that’s meant to be an entertainment monster, HDR10 support is definitely a big deal. Further, the Honor Note 10 boasts of AI video quality enhancement which promises improvement in video quality by up to 20%. The company explains that the phone uses AI to intelligently fill pixels on the screen to make it look more vibrant.
But what’s the use of a good display without great audio, right? Honor has got you covered here as well. The Honor Note 10 features symmetric stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos support.
Apart from the large screen, one of the key highlights of the Honor Note 10 is its special CPU Turbo button. The phone features a dedicated Turbo key on the right side which will essentially start cleaning up background processes to allow CPU performance to reach its peak capacity. The Turbo mode will reportedly allow the Honor Note 10 to run even the heaviest of games without any hiccups. What’s more, you can customise this Turbo button for different functions like acting as a recording button during gameplay or as a shutter button in camera mode. Note that the phone comes with GPU turbo as well!
With the CPU running at its peak capacity, there’s always the question of heating. Honor is taking care of this issue as well, by adding a “PC level liquid cooling system” called “THE NINE” liquid cooling technology. The tech involves using a liquid cooling tube similar to the MacBook Air and can enhance heat dissipation capacity by 41% and reduce the maximum CPU temperature by up to 10 degrees celsius. That’s pretty impressive!
Coming to the other Honor Note 10 specs, the phone features the flagship Kirin 970 processor with up to 8GB RAM option and a gigantic 5000mAh battery to keep you running for more than a day. The company claims that you can play wilderness action for up to 4.5 hours and king of glory for up to 6.5 hours at a stretch with this large battery on board. Charging the large battery isn’t an issue since the phone supports 5V 4.5A super fast charging that’ll ensure that it gets topped up in around 2 hours!
The Honor Note 10 is not all about gaming, it’s also a good option for office and business use. The phone supports 1080p wired as well as wireless projection. Given its large display, there’s also a split display mode.
Coming to the cameras, the Honor Note 10 has the same setup as the Honor 10 featuring a 16MP + 24MP f/1.8 dual cameras. So, the camera performance should be similar to the Honor 10 as well. However, the Note 10 comes with AIS (AI image stabilisation) technology which will also aid in improving night photography. There are other standard features such as scene recognition, different beauty mode for selfies and AI bokeh.
Honor Note 10: Price & Availability
The Honor Note 10 is priced as follows:
6GB + 64GB Price: 2799 yuan ($410),
6GB + 128GB Price: 3199 yuan ($468),
