In October 2021, Japanese tech giant Sony Xperia reached an agreement with Chinese company Meizu that would see some elements of Meizu’s Flyme OS integrated on Sony Xperia smartphones. Since then, Xperia phones launched in China are equipped with several Flyme apps bringing a localized user experience.

There are indications that Sony may be toying with the idea of fully integrating Flyme OS on its smartphones. Already, existing Xperia phones sold in China are pre-installed with app store, email, weather, news and information widgets and others adapted by Flyme. However, a survey questionnaire sent out by Sony recently sought feedback from users regarding their experience using the OS delivered with a touch of Flyme features. One of the questions probed users for their view about Flyme fully integrated on the Xperia phones to replace the existing OS.

Rumors of Sony Xperia phones using Meizu’s Flyme OS first emerged in January this year. A Chinese blogger later revealed that Sony disclosed that the Xperia phones in China will on get some localized supplements provided by Meizu with the entire OS still based on stock Android. This survey could be an indication that Sony is having a rethinking. Afterall, the stock Android experience isn’t a trendy think in China as it is elsewhere. Most smartphone makers often offer customizations tailored to suit the needs of the locality it is serving. We will keep you informed as things unfold in this regard.

Soon after the launch of the Meizu 18 series in March, Meizu announced that it will offer a pure OS experience on its latest flagship smartphones. Since then, the Android-based Flyme software on these phones has been void of advertisements, push notifications, and bloatware. But recently, ads appeared in the stock weather application.

According to a report by ITHome, users of Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro were exposed to advertisements on their devices. These ads were found inside the stock weather app of Flyme. Users were not only exposed to banner ads in the application but also a full-screen app opening ad.

Thankfully, the advertisements were removed a few hours later. One of the company executives clarified that the issue was due to a configuration mismatch.

Meizu has been promoting its latest premium smartphones as ‘Three Zero Mobile’. The three zeros stand for no ads, no push notifications, and no bloatware. The firm even trolled other OEMs as part of its ‘April Fool’s Day’ prank for promotions. But unfortunately, due to a simple mistake, the company went against its word.

When Meizu announced its ‘Three Zero Mobile’ software policy, the firm said that it will also cover the Meizu 17 series. However, that never happened and the company has even discontinued the policy for future smartphones.

Hence, Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro are currently the only handsets from Meizu without ads, push notifications, and bloatware.

Meizu, the China-based smartphone manufacturer, has today announced that the stable version of its latest mobile operating system — Flyme 9 will be released for the Meizu 17 series smartphones on 6th May.

Further, the company has now started Flyme 9 Internal Beta Registration for the Meizu 16s Pro, 16s, 16th Plus, 16th, 16T, and 16X models. The original beta users of Flyme 8 will be automatically joined in and the new participants can go to the “System Update” section in the app and register for the same.

The latest Flyme 9, which was announced last month, comes with several improvements and new features. As this is a major update, it features significant changes in the design, privacy, functions, efficiency, and other aspects.

The desktop icons are now in square boxes with chamfered edges and there are beautiful color schemes that blend well with the background. Each third-party application can also rely on algorithms to achieve consistent icon styles.

The notification and control centers have been redesigned and are displayed side by side in a horizontal screen orientation, which is convenient to operate. The company has also visually simplified the fingerprint icon and application interface, removing the decorative elements and retaining only the necessary elements.

There are some interesting screensavers and wallpapers as well as new themes. Alive wallpaper supports dark and light color modes and can be transformed through different levels. The interface is also embedded with dynamic effects, covering screen fingerprint unlocking, facial recognition, screen rotation, gestures, etc.

In early March, Meizu launched its 2021 flagship smartphones – Meizu 18 and Meizu 18 Pro. Apart from new hardware, these devices also come with the new version of the company’s mobile software – Flyme 9 based on Android 11. Today, as part of its April Fool’s day prank, Meizu trolled competitors by implying the strong points of the latest version of its Android skin.

These days, phones from all OEMs have identical hardware. They only differ in terms of their design and software. Each Android handset maker has its own UI to differentiate itself from the competition. In fact, software plays a key role in purchase decisions.

But unfortunately, despite improving their UIs, some companies have been lately ruining the UX (user experience) by introducing ads, bloatware, push notifications, and whatnot. The most popular OEMs known for this are Xiaomi (MIUI) and Samsung (One UI).

Taking a dig at such companies, Meizu posted an April Fool’s day prank on Weibo. In this post, the Chinese smartphone maker trolled companies with ads in their UI by announcing a new version of its latest flagship phones called Meizu 18 Ad Edition and Meizu 18 Pro Ad Edition respectively.

The company goes on to say that this new variant of the Meizu 18 series will prompt users throughout the day by pushing notifications. Further, it will ship with 999 apps pre-installed.

The last and best feature of the new Meizu 18 series is that the full-page ad on these phones can be closed after 999 seconds. The company claims that this can help youngsters who are addicted to smartphones.

One might be wondering why Meizu is focussing on these three points specifically. Because with Flyme 9, the company has cut down ads, push notifications, and pre-installed applications to offer a ‘pure OS experience’.

That said, if you are interested in the Meizu 18 series, you can now buy it from the company’s official global store on AliExpress.

Meizu, the Chinese smartphone maker has today announced that the company’s last year’s flagship smartphone lineup, the Meizu 17 series, will be joining the “Three Zero Mobile” family in a couple of months.

The company is gearing up to roll out the Flyme 9 operating system for the smartphones which promises to offer a pure experience to the users, without any ads, push notifications, or pre-installed applications on the device.

This new operating system update will be available for the users of the Meizu 17 series smartphones in the month of May. The company has also said that all the new devices from Meizu will now come with a similar user experience. It started to do the same with the newly launched Meizu 18 series.

Earlier, the company had said that all the applications on the smartphone will need to be authorized by the users as the company is aiming to protect users’ privacy and security and giving control to the users.

The Meizu 17 smartphone features a 6.6-inch S-AMOLED Full HD+ display which comes with an in-display fingerprint sensor. Under the hood, the device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 865 octa-core processor, coupled with 8GB RAM.

In the camera department, the phone comes with a quad-camera setup on the back that includes a 64-megapixel primary shooter, a 12-megapixel wide-angle lens, an 8-megapixel ultrawide sensor, and a 5-megapixel macro lens. On the front side, there’s a 20-megapixel front-facing snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The device runs the Android 10 operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own Flyme OS 8.1 on top. Ever since the launch of the phone, Meizu has been regularly pushing updates and introducing new features. The phone is powered by a 4,500mAh battery with support for 30W fast charging technology.

Chinese phone maker Meizu may have slowed down its smartphone product cycle but the brand is still keeping faith with its custo Flyme ROM. The company has now unveiled the Flyme 9 custom ROM which has been a long time coming. The new ROM takes over from the Flyme 8 which was released in 2019 although Meizu pushed the Flyme 8.1 to some models last year.

The long wait will likely not be in vein as the new ROM comes with several imrovemnets and new features. Since this is a major update, it features significant changes in the design, privacy, functions, efficiency and other aspects.

In terms of the design, the desktop icons are now in a square boxes with chamfered edges and beaiutigful color schemes that blend well with the background. Each third-party application can also rely on algorithms to achieve consistent icon styles. Some system-level plug-ins have been added, and some plug-ins can be dragged into the negative screen (Aicy overview).

The notification and control centers has also been redesigned. At the same time, the notifications and control keys are displayed side by side in a horizontal screen orientation, which is convenient to operate.

Meizu has also visually simplified the fingerprint icon and application interface, removing the decorative elements and retaining only the most direct page logic and necessary elements.

You also get some interesting screensavers and wallpapers as well as new themes. The Flyme 9 also includes Flyme 8 themes allowing users to travel through time and space and reminisce about the classics. Alive wallpaper supports dark and light color modes and can be transformed through different levels.

The interface is also embedded with dynamic effects, covering screen fingerprint unlocking, facial recognition, screen rotation, gestures, etc. The icon self-layering algorithm can have smooth and smart animation even if the application is unpopular.

Flyme for Watch

In addition to Flyme 9, Meizu also unveiled the all-new Flyme for Watch which is specifically designed for smartwatches. The smartwatch and fitness tracker manufacturing sector is growing very fast.

Starting from the hardware features and interaction methods, Meizu has newly defined the design language, and extended the sense of order of Flyme 9 to the small screen. It is equipped with a redesigned launcher, notification center and shortcut switch, which brings easy and convenient interaction.

In terms of vision, Flyme for Watch supports highly customizable dials and provides more than 30 small components. Users can freely use their creativity to match. It supports album dial settings for dynamic and static pictures. It also has a unique art dial to choose from, anytime, anywhere.

For functions, Flyme for Watch not only supports conventional notification synchronization, music control and other functions, but also supports eSIM independent call function. Tat means it allows the watch to function ireespective of a phone. There is also a Find My Phone feature onboard.

At the same time, Flyme for Watch also comes with the custom Aicy voice assistant and it functions in the same way as on a obile phone. That is, it provide users with a real smart watch experience. The introduction of the Meizu Pay payment tool also expands more usage scenarios for Meizu watches.

The custom watch ROM also supports the installation of third-party apps. The most advanced apps include Air Travel, Baidu Maps, NetEase Cloud Music, Alipay, Sogou Input Method, QQ and many other watch-side apps.

Aiming at the two natural pain points of smartwatch performance and battery life, Meizu also introduced the OneMind smart engine on the watch side to customize the core capabilities in depth according to the hardware characteristics and usage scenarios of the watch, including as many as 300 special optimizations.

Meizu announced during the event that it will release its first smartwatch equipped with Flyme for Watch in May this year.

Yesterday, Meizu teased the arrival of Android 11 for its smartphones. Today, the company has officially confirmed the date on which it will start recruiting closed beta testers. Unsurprisingly, the brand’s flagship smartphones – Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro will be the first in line to receive the update.

According to a post by the official Flyme Weibo account, Meizu will open registrations for the Meizu 17 series Android 11 Closed Beta program on December 23. Although the company did not mention when the beta builds will start arriving, it did reveal that the stable release will happen in Spring 2021.

In other words, owners of Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro will have to wait until either the end of Q1 2021 or early Q2 2021 to experience Android 11 on their smartphones. Though the wait seems too long, it is much better than the Android 10 rollout, which only began in late May 2020.

That said, the brand is yet to disclose the list of eligible devices for Android 11. Hence, we are not sure which Meizu phones will be getting the update. Given the firm’s market share, we think only certain handsets such as Meizu 16S, Meizu 16S Pro, and Meizu 16T will make it to the list.

Meizu was once known for its Flyme Android skin. But with diminishing market share, it is sad to see the firm’s software support to degrade over the years.

Meizu is one of the oldest Chinese smartphone makers. But unlike its competitors, it does not have a much presence outside its home country.  For those unaware, the brand’s handsets run Flyme, a heavy Android skin. This skin is known for first to adopt certain features, which are common today. But the company is infamous for updating the underlying Android version very late but thankfully that may change soon.

Earlier today, the official Weibo account of Flyme posted a certain teaser. According to the post, the company may reveal something about Android 11 for its smartphones tomorrow (December 22) at 11:11 AM local time.

We think the brand could announce the Android 11 Beta program for its flagship smartphones – Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro. Maybe, the initiative could include other models as well. Because the beta program for the previous major update kicked off simultaneously for multiple devices.

Anyway, it is good to see that Meizu is improving its update delivery. Because the firm started rolling out Android 10 (Flyme 8.1) to its handsets only in late May. That’s eight months after Google officially released the Android 10 in September 2019.

Apart from the new Flyme version, we also expect Meizu to debut its first-ever proper smartwatch called ‘MEIZU Watch’ by the end of this month, which is reported to be under mass-production.

Most of the major smartphone manufacturers have entered the smartwatch segment and now Chinese maker Meizu is also all set to launch its own smartwatch. And going by the recent development, it seems that there will be more than one wearable device from Meizu.

Meizu has registered a new Weibo account named Meizu Smartwatch or “Flyme for Watch”, which has also been certified and validated on the platform. The company has also confirmed that the first product will be launched in the fourth quarter of this year.

Earlier, it was reported that the company had applied for trademarking two names in July this year — Meizu Watch and Flyme for Watch. Flyme is the company’s own custom skin for the Android smartphones used on the company’s mobile phones.

Additionally, a smartwatch was hinted by the company in the eighth-anniversary poster of the Flyme OS but nothing much is known about the same at this time. However, we expect to know more about this in the coming weeks, as the launch date nears.

Notably, the company has already entered the wearable devices market with the launch of a hybrid smartwatch called ‘Meizu Smart Watch Mix’ aka ‘Meizu Light Smartwatch’. But the said Meizu Watch will be the company’s first actual smartwatch.

Meizu is seeding out a new system update to its flagship smartphones – Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro in China. The new update, apart from adding new features, also fixes a large number of bugs reported by users. The company calls this an “important update” as it brings an overall improved experience.

Like the company claims, the new Flyme update for Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro indeed brings a number of small changes here and there as per the changelog.

Some of the new features that this OTA update adds to Meizu 17 series are as listed below.  

• Haptic feedback support for third-party applications like WeChat and Alipay
• Smart screen timeout which extends screen dimming time when a face is detected
• Optimized multi-tasking view with a new swipe up gesture to exit.
• Revamped Meizu Pay app
• New Game Center and various customizations in Game Mode

That said, do you know why Meizu is calling it an “important update:? Because according to the official changelog, the latest system update for Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro fixes a total of 23 known bugs. This is insane as companies usually fix a small number of issues at a time.

The Meizu 17 series is not available outside China. But if you are using an imported unit or a Chinese citizen using it in another country, make sure to download and install this new Flyme update to get all the benefits.

Last but not least, it is worth noting that last month’s system update for these handsets added support for stabilization while recording videos from all the cameras.

Late last month, Meizu announced the recruitment for Android 10 Closed Beta testers for 10 smartphones. The first build was said to roll out starting July 21. As today is the day, the company has seeded out the update to four devices initially. The remaining six will be getting the update by the end of this month.

Meizu smartphones run Flyme, an Android skin similar to the likes of MIUI, ColorOS, and others. The company announced its latest iteration called Flyme 8.1 alongside Meizu 17/17 Pro. The stable update was rolled out to all the eligible handsets by the end of May itself.

However, unlike the Meizu 17 series, which launched with Flyme 8.1 based on Android 10, the update seeded out to older devices was Android Pie-based. Hence, last month, the company started recruiting closed beta testers for Android 10.

Currently, Flyme 8.1 Android 10 Closed Beta build is available for the following four handsets.

• Meizu 16th
• Meizu 16th Plus
• Meizu 16s
• Meizu 16s Pro

The remaining six phones listed-below will be receiving the update by the end of July.

Last month, Meizu announced on Weibo that it will be adding stabilization option for video recording from all the cameras on Meizu 17 series. Now, as promised, the brand has started rolling out the said update with many more features.

Meizu is currently seeding out Fyme v8.1.2.2A OTA update to Meizu 17/17 Pro weighing 2.61GB in size. The new system update brings a  number of new features and also fixes various known bugs.

According to Flyme official Weibo account, the latest update for Meizu 17 series brings the following features along with a ton of fixes.

• Stabilization on all cameras while video recording
• Fast charging while the display is in use.
• Easy access to the 129° ultra-wide camera
• Intelligent network distribution
• Battery optimizations

Interestingly, the second and third features were already introduced in the Flyme v8.1.1.0A update that was sent out to media review units in May. Looks like they did not make their way to consumer units in the next week.

Anyway, this is the second major update for Meizu 17 series. Unfortunately, it seems to be limited for the Chinese variants and above all, it is not known when the brand will deliver the same to units running Flyme Global version.

It is obvious that all smartphone companies have a record of their user trends to improve their services. But not all of them share it publicly as Meizu has done on Weibo.

Anyway, here’s what Flyme users or rather Meizu users did on their smartphones every day for the last 30 days.

1:00 to 6:00

During late nights or early hours of the day, 12% of Meizu users cleaned up their device in “Mobile Manager” app in preparation for the new day. Whereas, only 6% of users opened the “0Clock” app to set alarms.

10:00 to 12:00

During the morning, 17% of users received messages on their phone. Meizu also hints it to be from the courier services as usually their notifications are sent out in this period when the parcels are out for delivery.

13:00 to 15:00

Whereas, in the afternoon, 7% of users used the “Download Manager” app to download various things.

16:00 to 18:00

As for evening, 9% of users accessed the ‘Camera’ app to click some pictures and record videos. Also, some 11% of users were on calls via the “Phone” app.

19:00 to 21:00

At night, 8% of users used “Aicy” suggestions and 12.3% of users check the “Weather” app. Also, another 11% of users launched the “Family Guardian” app.

22:00 to 00:00

Lastly, at around midnight, 1% of users opened “User Help” to share feedback to make Flyme experience better.

From this data, we can clearly get an idea about how much the smartphone manufactures know about their users.

Meizu is one of the oldest Chinese smartphone makers with little presence in international markets. According to the latest teaser on Flyme’s (the company’s Android skin) official Weibo account, the brand’s first proper smartwatch will be finally launching in Q4 2020 with Flyme For Watch software on board.

Meizu is known for smartphones with standout designs. Since its inception, its hardware and software have been different from other companies. However, the company has not launched a proper smartwatch in its 12 years of existence in the smartphone industry.

But that’s going to change soon as the brand officially teases the launch of its first-ever proper smartwatch in Q4 2020. Additionally, it also confirms that it will be running Flyme For Watch.

Having said that, the base OS underneath the Flyme For Watch is a mystery. For instance, Xiaomi uses Android Wear platform for its MIUI For Watch. On the other hand, Oppo’s ColorOS Watch is based on AOSP.

Also, you might have noticed by now that we are calling the upcoming Meizu wearable as ‘proper smartwatch’. That’s because the brand already launched a hybrid smartwatch called ‘Meizu Smart Watch Mix’ aka ‘Meizu Light Smartwatch’ in 2016.

Although the launch of Meizu’s next wearable is months away, we can expect it to start leaking days or even weeks ahead of its official announcement.

In the last week of May, Meizu released Flyme 8.1 stable update for all the eligible devices. However, the update was not based on the latest stable version of Android. But now, the brand has finally announced Android  10 closed beta recruitment for all those 10 devices that received the latest version of Flyme recently.

The Android 10 update for older Meizu smartphones will be first available to closed beta testers starting July 21. To participate, users will have to register themselves in the system update app. 

Interested users must have Flyme 8.1. 0.0A Stable or Flyme 8.20.6.16 Beta installed on their handset. Users who are already enrolled in the beta program need not register again.

The Meizu 17 series are the only smartphones Meizu has announced this year and they may as well be the only smartphones it will launch this year according to news from China.

A summary of a conference was posted on the manufacturer’s Weibo page and one of the points said Meizu will not be announcing new phones in the second half of the year. The reason is that the Meizu 17 series is reasonably priced, thus there is no need to launch other phones.

The Meizu 17 starts at ¥3699 while the Meizu 17 Pro has a starting price of ¥4299. They are definitely not the cheapest Snapdragon 865 phones on the market but pack pretty impressive specs nonetheless.

At the Meizu 17 series launch, the company also unveiled Flyme 8.1, the latest version of its mobile software. Now, only after three weeks from the announcement, the brand has released a stable build for all the supported / eligible devices.

The Flyme 8.1 is an incremental update to Flyme 8 released last year. The base Android OS has been now upgraded to Android 10 from Android Pie remains the same as before on all the devices but they get most of the new features introduced with the launch of Meizu 17 series.

One of the notable new features is OneMind 4.0 AI Engine, which the brand claims to be 30% better than its forerunner OneMind 3.5. The new version of Flyme also brings small window mode 2.1 similar to newly introduced floating windows in MIUI 12.

Other features of Flyme 8.1 by Meizu include 300 deep Android customization improvements and optimizations, improved Aicy voice assistant, new live wallpapers as well as in-display fingerprint sensor animations, and more.

As mentioned in the beginning, Flyme 8.1 stable update is live for all the 10 eligible devices and they are as listed below.

Meizu 17 series will be debuting on May 8 as flagship phones of the brand. The Meizu 17 and Meizu 17 Pro duo will be the first 5G smartphones from the company. According to the latest teaser by the brand on Weibo, they will be also the first devices from the manufacturer to run Android 10 with Flyme 8.1 skin on top of it.

Meizu is popular for its design among geeks worldwide. Similarly, it is known for Flyme Android Skin in its home country China. Sadly, the current latest version of the software called Flyme 8 is still based on Android Pie.

Finally, that will be changing with the introduction of Android 10-baed Flyme 8.1 on Meizu 17 series. Unfortunately, the teaser shared by the company does not reveal anything about the new version of its mobile software.

However, we do know that the latest software will be adopting the native Android 10 dark mode. For the unaware, dark mode on Meizu smartphones is known as Night Mode and its present since Flyme 7.

With the release of Flyme 8, the Night Mode was updated to version 2.0 with new features and improvements. Now, once again with Flyme 8.1, it is expected to get a facelift utilizing stock option offered by Google.

Anyway, we will know more about Flyme 8.1 at the launch event of Meizu 17 series. The brand might even announce the list of eligible devices for the update.

Meizu introduced dark mode, known as Night Mode on Flyme OS 7 long before Google brought it in native Android. Now as Android 10 officially supports dark mode, the company has decided to adopt the native solution in its latest Flyme OS 8 along with an option to force dark mode on unsupported apps.

Meizu’s FlymeOS is one of the richest Android skin in terms of features and functionality. Also, it was one of the first to bring dark mode which is now ubiquitous. Now, according to a Meizu FlymeOS executive, the Android skin will adopt the official Android 10 dark mode to enable dark mode on supported as well as unsupported apps.

Normally, on Android 10, when the user turns on dark mode, the supported apps also reflect the change. But Meizu will go one step ahead and provide an option in FlymeOS 8 to force dark mode on unsupported apps as well. Anyway, this features is not new as it is present on ColorOS 7 and Realme UI. Even OxygenOS is about to get this feature according to a finding in a recent open beta update for the OnePlus 7 series.

Meizu has today announced that it has now started rolling out the latest Flyme 8 stable version update to the first batch of compatible smartphones. The announcement from the company added that users can check for the same by going to System Updates app.

The Chinese smartphone manufacturer has also revealed that the second batch of smartphones will be receiving this new stable version of Flyme 8 next month, i.e. in December 2019.

The update that is currently being rolled out to devices is Flyme 8.0.0.0A which is around 2.84GB in size. In this month of November 2019, the update will be available for these devices: Meizu 16s Pro, Meizu 16s, Meizu 16X, Meizu 16th, Meizu 16th Plus, Meizu 15, Meizu 15 Plus, PRO 7, PRO 7 Plus, Meizu M6 Note.

Meizu may be struggling, but the company certainly isn’t letting it show if it is. They’ve gone to Weibo with a teaser for a new announcement taking place tomorrow, though there’s no mention of what they plan to launch. Along with that, they’ve posted a poster to go along with the teaser, asking people to essentially gear up for the announcement.

While we may not know what the announcement is for, we’ve got a pretty good idea for what it’ll be. Flyme, the custom user interface for the Android operating system from good old Meizu, is getting a new update, and a few months ago they teased the launch date of the new Flyme 8 as the 13th of August, which is tomorrow.

What we’re not sure about is whether Flyme 8 is the only big announcement they have for tomorrow. We’ve seen multiple leaks for several different Meizu devices as of late, and it’s fully possible that we’ll see at least one of these devices launch alongside the new UI. We don’t expect to see the new flagship Meizu 16S Pro, but we wouldn’t be surprised to see a new mid-range device come out of this.

We’re very eager to see what exactly Meizu has in store for us tomorrow. While we’d love to see the company announce something big, it’s more than likely they’ll just have a small announcement for Flyme 8. I hope that they manage come out of their situation relatively fine though, I’ve been an avid fan of the company and would hate to see them disappear.

Meizu‘s Flyme 7.3 update was released on the 10th of May earlier this month. Since then, Meizu users have been eagerly awaiting the update, and for Meizu 16S users, that day is here. Flyme 7.3 brings with it a few new features and improvements to the Flyme UI. The new update integrates Meizu Pay app with the Flyme system for touchless payments experience using the bank, bus and other access cards. The company has integrated the whole system with NFC. Furthermore, users can now set the default payment option by going into the settings menu.

If you got a recent Meizu device and want to try the very latest version of its operating system, you will be glad to know that the company has just launched the beta version of the Flyme 7.2. The download will soon be available to users who enrolled in the beta testing phase, but it is not the best version for everyday use. Meizu also confirmed the set of devices which will be soon updated to the new firmware.

The beta will be officially available starting from January 8 for the latest flagships Meizu 16 and 16 Plus as well as the affordable variant 16X. Meizu has just started rolling out a new beta update of the latest iteration of its Flyme user interface. The new update bumps the number of version to 7.8.8.7 and it brings several improvements. The smartphones eligible for the update are Meizu 15, 15 Plus, M15, Pro 7, Pro 7 Plus, Pro 7 High Version, M6 Note, and E3. Sadly, other devices have been left behind before the end of their typical software support period, leaving several users disappointed.

The new update optimizes the lock screen rotation logic and it fixes important bugs such as the one related to the invisibility of the bottom bar and the red dot not disappearing after clearing notifications. A bug related to the Night mode has been fixed as well: it prevented the users from seeing the app names in the Home screen once it was enabled.

There are also other bug fixes to the notification and status bar, as well as Bluetooth connectivity, gesture navigation on the Meizu E3, and more minor issues. The update to the new Flyme version takes about 10 minutes and the phone will restart a few times once you launch it. Make sure to backup all of your important data as it is a Beta firmware.

After a terrible 2017, Meizu seems to be getting things right this year. Yesterday, the company released its first set of flagship grade models for 2018, the Meizu 15 series, boasting of an inspiring design and powerful specifications (Hands on here!). Now, a new report from Androidheadlines claims that the Chinese smartphone manufacturer is working on an Android Go smartphone.

Android Go is a special ultra-light fork of Android that lowers the barrier for low-end smartphones to run the world’s most popular operating system. So if you were tired of your budget Android phone being slow, Android Go is your answer. It is basically a slimmed down version of Android that can run on phones with even 512MB of RAM. Android Go isn’t fancy, but it is something that will open up the world of Android to billions of new users, thanks to its ability to power super affordable smartphones.

For example, the ZTE Tempo Go that was released a few months back comes with the paltry Qualcomm 210. That’s a super low-end 4G chip which was released back in 2014! But with Android Go on board and 1GB of RAM, the phone shouldn’t have much issues running basic tasks. Costing just $79, it brings the latest 8.1 Android experience to ultra budget customers.

Meizu could use Android Go to enter newer markets. The company’s operations is primarily focused in China at the moment, but with an Android Go smartphone, it could target international regions like Europe. Many consider Meizu’s Flyme OS as its biggest disadvantage, but with its tie-up with Google, things could be different. It doesn’t necessarily have to release a very low-end device. Instead, a cheap device with SD4XX series chip, 1/2GB RAM, and an extremely cheap price could be a hit in the international markets. Unfortunately, the company hasn’t revealed any more details about the device, except that it will released sometime later this year.

Meizu has announced a new version of its Android-based OS called Flyme will launch soon. The new version will be called Flyme 7 and will be unveiled on April 22, the same date of the launch of the Meizu 15.

The info comes from the official Twitter accounts of Flyme OS and Meizu’s head of marketing, Ard Boudeling. The official Weibo account also released teasers yesterday ahead of the confirmation today.

The Weibo page has also revealed that recruitment of beta testers have already begun. If you are interested, the first step is to download the official Flyme Forum app. Open, sign in/up and you should see a registration page for Flyme 7. Ensure you read the instructions carefully before proceeding.

Meizu is set to unveil a new stable version of the user interface Flyme 6 on January 30. We are talking about the Spring Stable version, but new updates will also roll out to the users who adhered to the beta testing phase. Considering that this is an important version of the UI, it will include a big change log with many important features. The most important one is Meizu Pay: the payment system has been adapted to the new user interface and it will work perfectly with the new update. A new “Game Mode 2.0” will be present in the new firmware, but it will only be supported by Meizu X and Meizu E2. There are two major improvements in this update: it increases the fluidity of the OS and reduces memory consumption.

Some anomalies in the game mode have been fixed, as well as some bugs with the camera and the problems with the vibration seen in the previous version of the firmware. Flyme 6, according to the changelog, has solved the problem related to an excessive battery drain when the phones are in standby mode and in some other scenarios. The system stability and the smoothness have been improved as well with the new user interface. On Meizu M6, a vertical multi-tasking mode has been added, and there are also some additional bug fixes.

Besides unlocked units, carrier-branded units of these phones will be updated to Flyme 6 Spring stable version too: Meizu M3 Note, M5 Note, M6 Note, E2, Pro 7 Standard Edition, M6, M5 and M5s. Note that, according to a new teaser, Meizu was expected to unveil Flyme 7 on February 24 but that unfortunately turned out to be false. If Flyme 7 is to be released in the coming months, it should likely be on the Meizu 15, which is the next flagship of the company dedicated to its 15th anniversary (it will come together with a Plus version).

Meizu has officially released a new Developer version of its Flyme interface, version 6.7.8.22, with a couple of new features. The most spectacular feature which the new update brings is a kernel upgrade of some models to Android 7.0/7.1 Nougat.

Meizu Flyme 6 was initially released based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow at a time Android Nougat was already launched and now an update to Android Nougat is coming when Google just released Android 8.0 Oreo. However, good thing it is coming but it will only be available for the Meizu Pro 6 Plus, Pro 6, Pro 6s, Pro 5, MX6, Meizu E, M3 Max, M5 Note and M3 Note. It could be noticed that all the models are smartphones released within the last two years. The oldest is the Pro 5 released in September 2015 but the company did not reveal the reason for this.

Other models such as the MX5, MX4, MX4 Pro, Meizu X, Meizu U20, U10, and several others also got upgraded to the same Flyme 6.7.8.22 Developer ROM but their System kernel was not upgraded to Android Nougat.

The new Android 7.0 / 7.1 kernel brings some improvements in the system update speed and application installation speed. It also brings onboard several changes to the camera, system, connectivity, and basic settings of the Flyme OS including support for a number of new features such as payment authorization for several services via the fingerprint sensor, among others. Do note that this is the developer ROM, so all the features may not be fully functional on all the models but Meizu is working to fix all bugs before rolling out a Stable ROM.

Not too long after we reported that the ZUK Edge was being given a lifeline in form of Meizu’s Flyme 6 OS, another ailing model has got a similar treatment. Surprisingly, it is another Lenovo model, this time around the Moto models. Meizu has revealed that its developers have concluded works on a Flyme 6 third party ROM that is compatible with the Moto X Style, Moto X Pro which isthe international version of the Nexus 6,. Other compatible models include the Moto X Force, and Moto X 2014 (second gen Moto X).

Meizu only last month hinted that it would be making its Flyme 6 OS available for use on third party smartphones with the OnePlus 3T, ZUK Z2, Nexus 6P and a few others joining the early birds. Although Moto phones come with their own custom UI, the features on the Moto UI isn’t up to that on the Flyme OS. The Flyme OS is outed as one of the best custom ROM around.

On its part, the Flyme 6 comes with a number of cool features which includes a new search feature which allows users to search for answers on the internet via their phone’s camera. Just recently, Meizu and Nokia were revealed as having an event coming up next month. What the event is all about still remains in the dark but it looks like details are already streaming in. A new leaked poster seems to have revealed what the event is likely about.

Already, there is news making the rounds that Nokia devices would use the Flyme 6 in the near future but now, the leaked document hints at the inclusion of the mBack design on Nokia phones. the document looks like the front page of a licensing agreement between both companies but no other part of it is visible.

While we cannot say for sure if this is authentic or not, it is not out of place if such collaborative effort is in the works. For one, Meizu has been a long time admirer of Nokia even to the extent of using Nokia devices on a couple of its launch posters. Back in 2015, Meizu sent out the invite for the M2 along with a Nokia 1110 photo and just last year, they also sent out invites for another launch along with a Nokia E71.  That doesn’t confirm anything though, so we’ll wait to see what the two companies have in store for us.

Meizu announced the sixth iteration of its Flyme OS during the launch of the Meizu X phone. Although it is still in a closed beta stage, some early testers already have their hands on it and have decided to share some of the new features of the new Flyme 6 OS.

According to the testers, there is no much difference in the way the new Meizu OS looks. However there are lots of big changes in how it functions.

The first on the list is the new feature of the fingerprint scanner which unlocks the phone into any of three preset modes such as normal mode, guest mode, and privacy mode. What Meizu has done here is take advantage of the multiple fingerprints unlock feature and extra functionality. So you can register your left thumb to unlock the phone into guest mode; your left forefinger into private mode, and the right forefinger unlocks the phone into normal mode. There is still child mode included too and the option to hide apps.

Flyme 6 OS now has a new artificial intelligence system called One Mind which studies the habits of the users after a while and speeds up the launching of frequently used apps by up to 200%.

The new OS also allows you to monitor secure payments carried out on the device. There is remote assistance functionality, cloud services management, screen recording, and a bunch of new camera features.

Flyme 6 will be available on more than 20 devices and should be released as an open beta on December 20.

Meizu has again released another poster or press invite for its November 30 conference holding in China. This time around, the press invite contains another teaser and is captioned, “Make 6 Great Again” perhaps referring to its next Flyme 6 OS. This is coming on the heels of the “Make Helio Great Again” campaign first feature in its earlier press invite. We had also seen a teaser that suggested the Meizu X is th main smartphone for release on that day.

The latest “Make 6 Great Again” campaign likely points to the release of a new Flyme 6 operating system on that day, and probably pre-installed on the Meizu X. Recall that the Meizu X is said to be powered by a MediaTek Helio P20 chipset hence the “Make Helio Great again” mantra.

Fitting all the pieces together probably give us an idea of some key features of the mysterious Meizu X which include Helio P20 chip and Flyme 6 OS. The new Flyme 6 OS is said to be likely based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow instead of the latest Android 7.0 Nougat. We don’t know for sure, so we’ll wait till November 30 when all the packages would be unveiled.

The competition in the low-end market is really getting intense with Chinese smartphone companies releasing handsets that offer much more value than the price you pay. Today, after much waiting, Meizu released a brand new device, the Meizu M3S. This particular device will be a slight upgrade as compared to the Meizu M3 that was released back in April, coming with a metal body and adding fingerprint ID as well as a couple more features in the specs department.

First of all, Meizu has upgraded the body on the Meizu M3S to metal, which makes the device look much more premium than the polycarbonate Meizu M3. The overall dimensions will remain the same as before, i.e. 141.9 x 69.9 x 8.3mm but the owing to the metal body, the weight is slightly increased to 138 grams. In comparison, the Meizu M3 weighed 132 grams, so not a big increase in this department.

Given that the phone now comes in a metal built, Meizu has also added the popular rose gold color option along with the grey, silver, and gold options. For a smartphone that costs just 699 Yuan or $106, these are some pretty great options.

Apart from upgrading the body to metal, Meizu has now incorporated a home button enabled fingerprint sensor on the Meizu M3S. The phone is using the company’s mTouch 2.1, which can be used to unlock the device with fingerprint, make payments, encrypt apps and comes with other mBack features. Another upgrade is seen in the battery department, increasing the capacity from 2870mAh to 3020mAh on the new M3S model.

Rest of the specs are the same as the Meizu M3. So, the phone comes with a 5-inch 720p display with 2.5D curved glass and Mediatek’s MT6750 octa-core processor clocked at 1.5GHz inside. There will be 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM and 3GB + 32GB ROM options which are eMMC 5.0 storages along with MicroSD expansion. Coming to the camera, the phone features a 13MP f/2.2 aperture lens at the back with color temperature flash and PDAF. Up front, you get a 5MP shooter with 4P lens, f/2.0 aperture, and FotoNation 2.0 Intelligent beautify software.

The rest of the specs are standard such as dual SIM dual standby, dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0 etc. As for software, the phone runs on Flyme based on Android 5.1.

The Meizu M3S starts at 699 Yuan ($106) for the 2GB RAM + 16GB ROM version and goes up to 899 Yuan ($136) for the 3GB RAM + 32GB storage version.

Registrations for the first sale are already underway in China and the phone will go on sale via major sellers in China on June 18.

We are just one day away from the official event scheduled by Meizu but we are regularly getting new leaks about the upcoming Meizu Blue Charm devices. While the company hasn’t confirmed the existence of  such a brand as of yet, we expect tomorrow’s announcement to confirm and make it official.

Today, we have some interesting news about both the upcoming Blue Charm devices. In a set of pictures leaked earlier, there are two Meizu devices running an entirely different looking OS/ UI instead of the company’s Flame 4.0. One is larger than the other, which could be the Meizu Blue Charm Note and the other being the Meizu K52, the 4.6-inch model.

From the pictures, it looks like both the models are running a modified version of Jolla Sailfish OS. The icons at the bottom are similar to the ones seen on the Sailfish OS. Moreover, the overall interface too looks similar to Sailfish, which could mean that the new Meizu device may feature this instead of Android.

However, that is very unlikely and even if Meizu Blue Charm devices did have this UI, it would most probably be just a launcher and not an entirely new OS. Sailfish has been growing pretty steadily, but the app store and the overall operating system still has a long way to go to replace an OS like Android. Another possibility is that this can also be a different variant of the two devices, for those interested in having Jolla Sailfish, but even that does not sound practical. So, for now, we think that this is just a Sailfish launcher on top of Android 4.4 KitKat OS!

Lets recap the Meizu Blue Charm Note which hit TENAA around two days back.  It features a 5.5-inch 1080p resolution display, 64-bit MT6752 octa-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz; 2GB RAM, 16GB storage capacity; 13MP rear  + front 5MP front cameras, 3050 mAh battery and TD-LTE, TD-SCDMA, and GSM network support. This is an interesting new piece of information but take it with a grain of salt. Meizu has been developing Flyme UI for quite some time now and there is no need for Meizu to abandon that in favor of an entirely new UI.

Luckily, we don’t have to wait too long to find out more about the upcoming Meizu Blue Charm devices as the company is expected to announce them both along with a number of other Blue Charm gadgets at the 23 December 2014 event.

This afternoon, Meizu and Alibaba held a joint-launch event for their new products. One of them was YunOS Flyme UI version and the YunOS 3.0 version of the Meizu MX4. This phone is available in black, white, and gold. Other than the fact that it uses the YunOS 3.0, the hardware for this version of the Meizu MX4 is still the same.
