Android 17 development is in full swing. Google has already released two beta builds in a short time, and with the improved development cycle, the final version is expected to arrive as early as the second quarter.

It’s worth pointing out that Google hasn’t included the Pixel 10a on the list of eligible devices for the beta program. That’s likely because it was released after the Android 17 Beta 2 went live, and Google may not have updated the list since then. The Pixel 10a should be supported by the next beta release, which could arrive later this month.

Unfortunately, this will be the last major Android OS upgrade for the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, as their update support ends in October. That also means these Google Pixels will likely miss out on the QPR2 release. Still, it’s impressive to see them included on the Android 17 list, given that they were launched with Android 12. That’s a solid five Android OS upgrades in total.

Google’s Android 17 release timeline

The first beta was released on February 13, and Google quickly followed up with the second beta in the same month. The platform stability phase begins this month, per the official timeline. That’s when SDK/NDK APIs and app-facing behaviors are finalized.

Google is planning a major change in how it builds its premium Pixel smartphones. According to a Nikkei Asia report, the company is expected to start developing and manufacturing its high-end Pixel models in Vietnam from 2026. This includes the Pixel, Pixel Pro, and Pixel Fold. Until now, China has played a central role in both the development and production of these devices. Entry-level Pixel A series phones will continue to be handled in China for the time being.

This move shows that Google is expanding Vietnam’s role beyond simple assembly and trusting the country with the most important stages of smartphone production.

What Will Happen in Vietnam

Google will begin the New Product Introduction process in Vietnam. This is the most critical stage in making a new smartphone. It includes testing designs, checking how parts work together, setting up production lines, and preparing the phone for mass manufacturing. This phase requires hundreds of engineers, advanced testing equipment, and close coordination with suppliers.

In the smartphone industry, handling NPI work is seen as a sign of high manufacturing capability. It also means long-term trust from global technology companies.

Where Pixel Phones Were Made Before

For many years, China has been the main location for developing and manufacturing Pixel smartphones. China has the world’s most advanced smartphone supply chain, with experienced factories and suppliers that can handle complex products from the ground up. More recently, Google shifted some Pixel assembly work to Vietnam, but development and early-stage production remained in China.

With this new plan, Vietnam will take on full responsibility for developing premium Pixel models from scratch.

Why Google Is Making This Change in 2026

The decision reflects growing confidence in Vietnam’s manufacturing ecosystem. Google already produces some high-end Pixel phones in Vietnam and carries out testing and verification there. This makes it possible to move the entire development process to the country.

Another reason is the need to reduce supply-chain risk. Relying too much on one country can be risky due to trade tensions, policy changes, or disruptions. By spreading production across different countries, Google can make its supply chain more stable and flexible.

Impact on Geopolitics and the Economy

This shift has wider effects beyond Google. For China, it shows that global tech companies are slowly reducing their dependence on its manufacturing system. For Vietnam, it is a major win. So far, only Google has confirmed which devices will receive Android 15 and which won’t. Other brands haven’t yet made it official. So, we had to analyze the software update policy and past rollouts for the remaining brands to prepare the list above.

When Will Android 15 Start Rolling Out?

Android 15 has already entered the platform stability phase. It’s the final phase of development, where Google fixes known bugs and other problems and adds a final touch to the new OS to prepare it for a stable release.

Although we don’t have an official release date yet, the timeline is similar to last year’s Android 14. Hence, we’re expecting Google to drop the stable build of Android 15 around the same time as last year, which means early October.

Android 15 Release Timeline

Google has kept the Android 15 timeline similar to last year’s Android 14 release. It can be broken down into three phases.

We had two developer preview builds earlier this year in the first phase. Then, we had multiple beta builds in the next phase, allowing more users to participate in the beta testing.

In the first two phases, Google regularly adds new features and enhancements to the OS while also fixing the known issues.

With the beta 3 release last week, Android 15 entered the platform stability phase. This means all developer APIs and app-facing behaviours are final. This is the final stage of development before the stable rollout.

So far, Android 15 has followed a similar timeline for the beta release as last year’s Android 14. And it is expected to continue in the same way. Hence, we expect Google to release the stable Android 15 in early or mid-October.

Android 15: Top Features & Enhancements

1. Satellite Connectivity Support

Android 15 “extend platform support for satellite connectivity”. It adds some UI elements to ensure a consistent user experience.

The OS provides support for SMS and MMS apps as well as preloaded RCS apps to use satellite connectivity for sending and receiving messages. This also means satellite messaging in Android 15 won’t be limited to emergency uses only. Also, Android 15 apps can detect when a device is connected to a satellite. 

2. Theft Detection Lock

If someone snatches your phone and runs away with it, the device senses that motion and immediately locks the screen, preventing bad uses of your device.

The device will lock itself even if it detects suspicious activities like constant attempts to disconnect the phone or multiple failed login attempts. The best thing is that the other person will have to use the same Google account to set up the device after a factory reset. Otherwise, the device will be useless.

3. Private Space

Android 15 has a private space feature to protect apps and files you don’t want others to access. It uses a separate user profile and lets you set up a different lock factor for better security.

Everything you do in the private space will be invisible to the other space. Even the apps won’t show in the recent apps section. And all your downloads in the private space remain there.

4. App Pairs

If you frequently use apps in the split screen mode, you’ll love app pairs in Android 15. It lets you create a shortcut for your favourite split-screen combination to open them in a single click.

5. Partial Screen Sharing

If you screen share or do a screen recording, the video shows everything on your screen, including things you don’t want to show. Android 15 takes it to the next step by introducing partial screen sharing. With this feature, you’ll be able to screen share or record a single app rather than the entire screen.

6. Sensitive Notifications

Sensitive notifications are a way to prevent your OTPs from being read by malicious third-party apps. 

7. High-Quality Webcam Mode

Output quality has been an issue when using your Android device as a webcam for your PC. Android 15 aims to resolve that by integrating a new High-Quality Webcam mode.

Enabling the high-quality webcam mode requires tapping on the “HQ” symbol in the webcam preview. It disables power optimizations, which could result in increased battery drain. 

8. Changes for Large Screen Devices

Android 15 integrates important changes to the continuity features on foldables. You can have your front display (cover display) turned on whenever you fold your device or never turn it on and lock the front display.

Android expert Mishaal Rahman has found that Google is also testing a “swipe up to continue” option. It will let you continue apps on the cover screen by swiping up after you fold your device.

Google Pixel’s Software Update Policy: The Good and the Bad

Google Pixels have had one of the best software update policies, and recent changes made it more difficult for users to consider other smartphones over Pixels.

Up until the Google Pixel 7 series, the brand offered 3 years of Android updates. Then, the Pixel 8 arrived with 7 years of OS updates. This announcement shocked the smartphone industry, as no one was expecting it.

It’s great for Pixel 8 owners, but older Pixel users are equally disappointed as Google didn’t announce an extended OS upgrade for them (not even one extra OS upgrade). This means Android 16 could be the final OS update for the Pixel 7, but the Pixel 8 will receive OS updates until 2021.

Google was the first to announce 7 years of OS updates, but Samsung quickly followed this up by offering the same software support for the Galaxy S24 series.

Android 15 Release Timeline

Google follows a three-step strategy for the Android OS release that also applies to Android 15. First is the developer preview phase, during which the brand releases a couple of early builds for developers.

The first developer preview build for the Android 15 arrived in February, and then the second one in March. In April, we entered the second phase when we had the first beta release. It was more of a public beta release, allowing anyone to download and test the new OS ahead of the public release.

Google has already released multiple beta builds of Android 15, the latest being Beta 2.2. We will likely see a few more beta releases before the OS reaches the platform stability phase for the final touches to prepare for the stable release.

According to the official timeline, platform stability should begin around July-August. The timeline doesn’t reveal the stable release month. However, it’s clear that Google is following last year’s pattern for OS release. Hence, we can expect Android 15 to be publicly available in October.

Top Features in Android 15

1. Private Space: It protects your sensitive files and apps with an additional layer of security. This is similar to the Secure Folder on Samsung phones. This new feature creates a separate space hidden from the regular space.

2. App Archiving: It lets you unarchive apps to save storage while keeping the user data around. So far, this feature has been limited to apps installed from the Play Store, but Android 15 integrates this feature at the OS level, allowing archiving/restoring of any apps, even those installed outside of the Play Store.

3. Theft Detection Lock: It’s one of the most useful additions to Android 15. Whenever someone steals your phone and tries to run away, the phone senses that motion and immediately locks the screen. The phone will lock itself automatically even if it detects suspicious activities like multiple failed log-in attempts or constant attempts to disconnect the phone.

What’s more interesting is that this new feature prevents the device from setting it up again using a different Google account. So, unless they don’t have your Google account credentials, the phone is useless. 

4. App Pairs: Android 15 will allow users to save their favourite split-screen combination for quicker access. A shortcut will be created on the home screen to instantly open both apps in the split-screen mode.

5. Improved Health Connect: The new OS includes new data types across fitness, nutrition, and more. Beta 2 brings skin temperature and training plans as additional data types.

6. Partial Screen Sharing: Another useful feature in Android 15 is the ability to share or record a single app rather than the entire screen.

7. Notification Cooldown: This new feature prevents users from getting overwhelmed by successive notifications from the same app by lowering the volume.

Android 15 is coming later this year with a host of new features and enhancements. Google has already released a few Android 15 beta builds, revealing exciting things about the new OS. Unfortunately, only a limited set of devices will be upgraded to Android 15.

In this post, I have curated a list of eligible Android 15 devices for the major smartphone brands. Review the list to ensure your device will receive the major upgrade once it starts rolling out.

Most smartphone brands have yet to announce the list of devices eligible for the Android 15 upgrade. So, we had to analyze the software update policy for every brand and their devices in order to create this list. Although it’s not an official list, it won’t be a lot different from that.

This is not the final list by any means. Smartphone brands have yet to release the list of Android 15-supported devices. So, if your device isn’t on the list, don’t get disappointed. I would advise waiting until the official list comes out.

Google has already released several Android 15 betas, and a couple more are expected to be released in the coming weeks before it’s refined for the final release. We don’t have an official release date yet. However, it’s expected to be released in October.

The Google Pixel 8a is the company’s latest affordable smartphone and probably the best mid-range phone you can get right now. It offers a similar design and aesthetics as its pricier counterparts, the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, but cuts back on the spec sheet to achieve a more budget-friendly price tag.

But, does the latest Google Pixel 8a sacrifice in terms of software support? Thankfully, the device comes with the same software update promise as the other Pixel 8 series models. So, how long will the Pixel 8a get software updates?

How Many Software Updates Will the Pixel 8a Get?

Like the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, the pocket-friendly Pixel 8a will also get seven years of Android updates, security updates, and Pixel Feature Drops. So, you’ll have the latest Android experience for many more years to come.

The Google Pixel 8a comes with Android 14 out of the box, the same OS as the other Pixel 8 series phones launched with last year. This means the last OS upgrade for all Pixel 8 series models will be Android 21, which will be released in 2031.

These Google Pixel phones will also receive seven years of Pixel Feature Drops that bring exciting features and improvements multiple times a year.

That’s an impressive software support for a mid-range phone such as the Pixel 8a. In fact, no other smartphone brands offer this many OS upgrades for a mid-range phone, even their high-end phones get a maximum of four or five OS upgrades.

No Treat for Older Pixel Phones

While the mid-range Pixel 8a enjoys an impressive 7-year software update treat, older Pixel phones are on the verge of getting their final OS upgrade.

Google only offers three Android OS upgrades for the Pixel 7 series and older models. This means Android 16 will be the final major OS update for the Pixel 7 models, and then all Pixel phones launched before Pixel 8 will become ineligible for future OS upgrades.

Google, on one hand, is offering seven OS updates to the Pixel 8 series, while older Pixel phones are stuck with three. This huge gap has been disappointing for a lot of older Pixel users. Google could have extended software support for two additional years, at least. But, it doesn’t seem to be happening. If you want longer software support, get any of the newest Pixel phones.

Google Pixel Devices Eligible for Android 15 Upgrade

Android smartphone brands don’t have a universal software update policy, and therefore, the device’s eligibility for the next OS update is always a topic of discussion. Fortunately, that’s not the case with Google Pixels, as we already have an official announcement regarding the same.

The oldest Google Pixels to get the Android 15 upgrade is Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. Naturally, this means the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, and Pixel 8 series will also be getting the next Android update. The Google Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet will also join the party.

Except for the Pixel 8 series (and upcoming Google Pixels phones), which is promised to get a whopping 7 years of updates, older Google Pixels will only get 3 years of software support. This means no more Android updates for Pixel 5a and older devices.

Android 15 Release Timeline

Though Google hasn’t announced a release date for Android 15, the official timeline suggests that the beta phase will last until June. Around the same time, the new OS will enter the platform stability phase. This phase means resolving bugs and giving final touches to the new operating system before the public release.

Last year, Android 14 was released alongside the Pixel 8 series in October. We are highly expecting Android 15 to launch around the same time this year, alongside the Pixel 9 series.

Those who can’t wait for the stable release can install Android 15 beta on an eligible Google Pixel device.

Android 15: Top Features Known So Far

Satellite Connectivity Support

Ever since Apple released satellite connectivity for iPhones, Android users have been desperately waiting for it. Finally, it’s coming as a part of Android 15. Apps can use APIs to detect when a device is connected to a satellite.

Android 15 supports satellite connectivity for SMS apps and RCS apps for sending and receiving messages. This means satellite connectivity will not be limited to emergency uses only.

Partial Screen Sharing

If you share or record the screen in Android 14 or older versions, it will capture everything displayed on the screen. Android 15 makes it better by adding support for sharing or recording a single app rather than the entire screen.

Notification Cooldown

Too many successive notifications from a single app can be annoying, which Google has tried to resolve with the “Notification cooldown” feature. This feature lowers the volume of successive notifications coming from the same app.

Sensitive Notifications

Android 15 adds a strong layer of protection to your OTPs. The new sensitive notification feature will prevent malicious Android apps from reading your OTPs.

OTP fraud has been on the rise in recent years, and hence this feature could save people their hard-earned money if implemented correctly.

High-Quality Webcam

Android 14 QPR 1 for Google Pixel phones added a feature to use your Android phone as a webcam for a PC, but the output quality was basic. Android 15 resolves this problem by adding a high-quality webcam mode that disables power optimizations.

This feature has been spotted in Android 15 Developer Preview 2, where a new “HQ” symbol appears in the webcam preview. As it disables power optimizations, expect some battery drain.

Universal Keyboard Vibration Control

Android 15 will let you universally disable keyboard vibration. The new “keyboard vibration” toggle, when turned off, overrides individual keyboard app settings. However, you will be able to control the haptics of each keyboard app by disabling it.

Huawei’s Kirin 9010 inside the Pura 70 chip has been tested with both benchmarks and real-life workloads over the past few days. Notably, the chip performed better than expected with no overheating.

According to TechInsights, the new chip is fabricated on SMIC’s second-generation 7nm-class process node, which is also referred to as N+2. Notably, this is the same process technology that the predecessor Kirin 9000s was built on.

Last year, it was said that Samsung was working on a new battery technology that would be able to hold more power in a smaller space. This new technology is called “stacked battery technology.”

With this year’s Galaxy S24 Ultra, Samsung was supposed to bring this new technology to smartphones. But that didn’t happen. So the expectation was set for the next release in 2025.

However, it looks like even the Galaxy S25 Ultra won’t have stacked battery technology. Likely to save costs on its next model.

Galaxy S24 Ultra:

The new Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra comes with a ton of design upgrades from its predecessor. These updates place it inches ahead of the competition in this comparison. For its design, this new device comes with Gorilla Glass Armor on the front and Gorilla Glass on the back as well as titanium frame which is a new feature. This device weighs 232g and its dimensions are 162.3 x 79 x 8.6 mm (6.39 x 3.11 x 0.34 in).

A standard feature on ths Samsung S Ultra entries is the S Pen which is great for productivity. This flagship device comes with a ton of colour options which are very impressive. Pixel 8 Pro:

Overheating of the original Google Tensor caused the thermal paste over it to burn on a Pixel 6 Pro. The reason for this heating was only a 10-minute phone call, the user reported on Reddit. He has shared a photo of the internals of the device which shows burnt marks over the SoC giving an idea of the amount of heat it generates. Not to mention, the generated heat is beyond the capacity of the heat sink over it to keep it below the safe limit.

Google will design the chips completely in-house and use a more efficient TSMC 3nm process in the Tensor G5 in 2025

The root of the problem seems to be the lower power efficiency. What it means is that for a particular task, the chip consumes relatively more power for a given operation and dissipates more heat as well. Tensor chips are fabricated in Samsung‘s foundry, which is considered to be the main reason for the inefficient nature of Tensor and Samsung’s Exynos chips as well. Although Samsung’s fabrication process has improved in terms of the power efficiency of the end product, the original first Tensor chip is from three years back and things were even more inefficient back then.

Speaking of the improvements in thermal efficiency, some reports still show that the third version of the Google Tensor still throttles during tests more when compared to the competition. The Mountainview-based giant has continued to focus on AI-based tasks for Tensor over the years and dialed back the performance of Tensor G3 to avoid overheating issues.

Considering that Google’s fully home-grown Tensor G5 chip won’t be available until 2025, next year’s Google Pixel 9 series phones will likely still suffer from power efficiency issues to some extent – either a competitive performance with a temperature higher than usual, or a dialed down performance to avoid overheating – neither of which seems to be an ideal solution.

The Tensor G5 chip will not only be completely designed by Google but also use the more efficient TSMC 3nm process, which will theoretically bring a notable improvement to the Google Tensor G5.

For now, if your Pixel phone overheats, stop the operation that causes your phone to heat up and turn it off if possible until it cools down.

Google is pushing a first-of-its-kind update to the Google Pixel 8 Pro. It updates the AI Core app that powers on-device AI features. This AI Core app operates quietly in the background to process some of the AI-driven functionalities directly on the device instead of relying on the cloud servers and internet connection.

An enhancement in on-device AI capabilities

According to a Google Play Store listing that showed up earlier, “AI Core powers features across Android and provides apps with the latest Al models” However, the Play Store listing has been taken down. Probably Google plans for a separate announcement for this addition.

While the average user may not directly interact with AI Core, it plays a pivotal role in enhancing the overall user experience on the Pixel 8 Pro. The recent update, taking the app from version 0.release.539035001 to 0.release.582652206, is specifically tailored for the Pixel 8 Pro (codenamed “husky”). Pixel phones and tablets have included a placeholder for AI Core since the initial Android 14 update.

If you are using the Pixel 8 Pro, the update should have already been downloaded automatically on your phone and serving its job. Currently, this update is reported exclusive to the Pixel 8 Pro. However, it’s expected to make its way to the Pixel 8 if not to the older pixel devices with Tensor chips in the near future.

Some notable applications of the latest foundation models might include the implementation of features like ‘Zoom Enhance’ or making Magic Eraser work more swiftly. Google states that the impressions should have no impact on performance or durability

In response to user observations, Google released a statement acknowledging that “some users may see impressions from components in the device that look like small bumps.” However, the company reassures users that these impressions do not affect the Pixel 8 Pro’s performance or durability. According to a Google spokesperson, the new display on the device may show these impressions when the screen is turned off and not in use, particularly in specific lighting conditions.

The company suggests that the uneven surface on which the display rests might be a contributing factor to the impressions, and teardowns of the device support this possibility.

While the current reports indicate that the circular bumps are not affecting the device’s touch functionality or image quality, some Pixel 8 Pro owners express concerns about potential worsening over time. Google has rolled in a new beta update for Pixel devices that will provide general improvements and bug fixes. The new beta build is applicable to the Pixel 5a and newer devices after it. The news indicates that it is jumping ahead to Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1.

Google published the Android 14 quarterly update QPR1 Beta 2.2 to beta testers at the start of November 2023. The QPR1 Beta 2.2 came with over 30 changes to Pixel devices. One of the major bugs cleared with the QPR1 Beta 2.2 was the bug that caused pink text to show in AOD mode in the Pixel 8 Pro. Google has gone ahead to push for Android 14 QPR2 Beta 1 without releasing a Beta 3 build as speculated earlier.

The new Google Pixel update implies that eligible devices will soon start receiving their second major Android 14 update after the stable OS release. The QPR1 is expected to reach stable status in December. Furthermore, Google has already issued the November 2023 updates for its lineup of Pixel devices.

The Google Pixel 5a is the threshold of devices eligible for the new beta build and it is currently priced at $210.50 via Amazon. Some of the issues that have been resolved with the new update also include package manager crashes when installing some apps, issues with the Feedback app, and 5G connectivity problems in some units. There are several other changes that are aimed at improving the overall user experience.

Google Pixel’s car crash detection feature is finally expanding to more countries. Android expert Mishaal Rahman discovered that Google has quietly updated its support page for Pixel car crash detection to include five new countries: Austria, Belgium, India, Portugal, and Switzerland. This brings the total number of countries where the car safety feature is available to 20.

However, the feature is still limited to 11 languages and is only available on Pixel 4a and newer models in new countries—even though car crash detection supports Pixel models as old as the Pixel 3.

What is Pixel Car Crash Detection?

Car crash detection is a safety feature in the Personal Safety app on Pixel phones. When turned on, it uses sensors to detect a crash. If one is detected, the phone vibrates and rings loudly. You have 60 seconds to swipe “I’m OK” or “Call 911.” If you don’t respond, the phone automatically dials the local emergency services, and shares your real-time location.

If you tap “I’m OK,” you will be prompted to choose between three options: “No crash,” “Minor crash,” and “Call 112.”

If you do call emergency services, you will again have prompts to choose whether it’s a “Medical,” “Fire,” or “Police” emergency, so you can alert emergency responders without speaking. You can also set up emergency contacts and share your status with them in an accident.

Pixel’s car crash detection feature was first introduced in 2019 and has been praised for its accuracy and reliability. Apple added a similar feature to its iPhones in 2021.

This expansion is welcome news for Pixel users in the new countries. Car crash detection is a potentially life-saving feature that can help first responders reach accident victims more quickly.

Adobe’s Lightroom app for Android has received a major update, adding support for HDR images. This means that users can now edit and export their HDR images directly from the app, without having to use a separate program.

However, there are a few limitations to this new feature. First, it is only available on devices running Android 14. Second, it is currently only supported on a limited number of devices, including the Google Pixel 7 phone and later.

To use the new HDR feature, simply open an HDR image in Lightroom and go into Edit mode. Then, select the Light tool and scroll to the bottom to toggle on the Edit in HDR Mode option. Now, tap the HDR logo at the top right to view the HDR histogram, which will help you control the distribution of brightness in your image.  

You can also enable options like Visualize HDR and Preview for SDR display to see how your changes will look on different devices. Finally, fine-tune settings like Exposure, Contrast, and Clarity in SDR Settings. Once you’re happy with your adjustments, tap the share icon to export your HDR photo and choose the file type.

To note, Lightroom for Android currently supports three color spaces for HDR photos: HDR sRGB (Rec. 709), HDR P3, and HDR Rec. 2020. These are enhanced versions of sRGB, Display P3, and Rec. 2020 color spaces, each with different color gamuts.

The addition of HDR support to Lightroom for Android is great news for Android users who enjoy taking and editing HDR photos. However, it is unfortunate that it is currently limited to such a small number of devices. Hopefully, Adobe will expand support to more devices in the future.

Google has now shipped nearly 40 million Pixel smartphones since the launch of the Pixel series in 2016. This is a significant milestone for the company, even though it is still a minor player in the global smartphone market.

The data comes just after the launch of the Pixel 8 series this week. According to Francisco Jeronimo, VP at global market research firm IDC, Google shipped 37.9 million Pixel phones between 2016 and 2023. “Sales have been growing double digits in the last few years, with total sales reaching nearly 40 million units since its launch in 2016,” Jeronimo said.

This may not seem like a lot compared to Apple, which ships over 224 million iPhones every year, but it shows that users are gaining traction towards Pixel phones. In fact, Google has been able to maintain and increase its market share in the US and Japan, two of its key markets.

In Japan, Pixel is now the best-selling Android brand and is even taking market share from the iPhone. Whereas, in North America, Google was the only smartphone brand that didn’t see its shipments shrink year-over-year.

Last year, Google approached the 30 million milestone, selling 27.6 million units before the launch of the Pixel 7. This means that Google shipped around 10 million Pixel phones in the past year, which is potentially the best year for Pixel yet. The previous record was 7.2 million units.

Google’s success in these markets is likely due to a number of factors, including its focus on a clean software experience, AI features, and timely updates. It will be interesting to see how the company performs in the coming years as it competes with established players like Apple and Samsung.

Google Pixel phones are still a relatively small player in the smartphone market overall, but they are growing in popularity, especially in Japan. A new report from Bloomberg, citing data from Counterpoint Research, shows that Google Pixel phones now make up 12% of the smartphone market in Japan, up from just 2% in Q2 2021. During the same time period, Apple’s iPhone market share dropped from 58% to 46%.

This is a significant shift, as Apple’s iPhones have long been dominant in the Japanese smartphone market. However, Pixel phones are likely gaining popularity in Japan for their competitive pricing, strong camera performance, and deep integration with Google services.

Another factor contributing to Pixel’s success in Japan is the weak yen. This makes them a good deal for people outside of Japan who want to buy a Pixel phone. The Pixel is only sold in a few countries, and the yen’s fall to its lowest level in over 3 decades has made Japan the cheapest place to buy one.

Google is also benefiting from the decline of other Android brands in Japan. For example, Sharp saw its market share jump from 8% to 11%, and Sony went from 5% to 6%. However, Samsung held its line at 6%, while Oppo actually slipped from 6% to 5%.

That said, Apple’s latest iPhone 15 series may boost its market share, despite the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s $100 price increase due to the removal of a smaller storage tier. Google is set to launch its latest Pixel devices at an event next Wednesday.

Google is reportedly working on a new feature for Pixel phones called Repair Mode. This feature would allow users to send their phones in for repair without having to worry about their personal data being accessed by the repair technicians.

Android Authority discovered strings in the Android 14 QPR1 beta that hint at this feature. Here’s the string:

There’s something similar called Maintenance Mode you might have heard of in Samsung Galaxy phones. But Android Authority suggests the Repair Mode on Pixel devices might work in a different way.  It may simulate a factory reset by using Dynamic System Updates (DSU), a feature introduced in Android 10.

DSU allows for the booting of a Generic System Image (GSI) without overwriting the original installation, which means that the user’s data can be preserved. 

In the case of Repair Mode, DSU will create a new, and empty data partition. During the next boot, Android would swap out the original data partition with the new, empty data partition. This would effectively simulate a factory reset, but the original data partition would remain intact.

Google has made several enhancements to DSU in Android 14 that make this possible. For example, Android 14 added the ability to hide the default notification that’s shown when the device is running a dynamic system. This means that Repair Mode would be able to show its own notification.

Another improvement that Google has made to DSU is allowing the “device owner” app to lock the device into the mode so that only the device owner (which in this case would be Repair Mode) can exit it. And thanks to a recent AOSP patch, the RMA tools that Google uses at its service centers will be able to know when a device is in Repair Mode, allowing the technician to forgo factory resetting it.

This is a great feature for Pixel users, as it would give them peace of mind knowing that their personal data is safe even when their phone is in the hands of someone else. It would also make the repair process easier and more convenient, as users would not have to spend time backing up and restoring their data.

Google is getting ready to introduce the Pixel 8 series of smartphones. Although the company hasn’t confirmed the exact launch date yet, recent news suggests that the new phones will probably be released in late October. Before the official launch, some leaks were shared online. One interesting detail from these leaks is that the Pixel 8 series might allow users to respond to notifications using their voice.

How will this feature work?

According to Mishaal Rahman, when a message notification arrives on your phone. You will be able to direct the phone to send a reply through Google Assistant. For instance, “Hey Google, Reply.” This will trigger a message type command, and using your voice to text, you can draft a message and send it to the person by saying their name. This is a helpful feature because you don’t need to touch the phone to reply. It saves you from the hassle of unlocking the phone and typing to reply.

Rahman also says that it’s not certain if this feature will be there when the phone is first launched. But this reply feature might come later on in an update for Google Pixel phones.

Under-display cameras have been used on smartphones for a while now. ZTE is on its fourth generation of under-display camera phones, and Samsung uses one on the inner display of its latest Galaxy Z Fold 5. There are also rumors that Apple will use under-display cameras in upcoming iPhones. Now, Google has joined the list, having patented under-display camera technology that is likely headed for its upcoming Pixel phones.

Google has filed a patent with the European Patent Office for a new under-display front-facing camera. The patent would allow Google to place the camera under the display panel without a separate hole-punch cutout or a notch.

The patent application describes a system and apparatus that allows the emissive display of a computing device to operate over a large area of the surface of the device, without any notches, cutouts, or punch holes in the emissive display. This is possible because the camera is positioned under the display and receives light that is transmitted through the display.

Further, the application reads the computing device can have a display with two or more cameras underneath. Light can pass through the display to reach the cameras, while the display still works normally. This is better than traditional displays because it gives users a better experience. With this type of display, users can see more of the screen and use the camera without having to worry about the camera blocking the screen.

The patent is interesting but we are yet to see how Google will implement it in the upcoming Pixel smartphones. Under-display cameras usually shoot underwhelming pictures because of obvious reasons. Let’s see if Google’s tech will be any better.

Google has released the July 2023 Android security update, which is now rolling out to Google Pixel phones and the newly released Pixel Tablet. What’s New in the July Android Security Update for Google Pixel Devices

The update includes two specific fixes for the Pixel Tablet, addressing issues related to battery and charging performance as well as occasional display problems with lock screen notifications. These improvements aim to enhance the overall user experience on the Pixel Tablet.

In terms of security, Google has published the Android Security Bulletin for July, which consists of two patch levels: July 1 and July 5. The July 1 patches address vulnerabilities in the Android framework, system, and Wi-Fi, including some marked as critical severity. The July 5 patches provide vendor-specific fixes and close a total of 20 vulnerabilities, with one critical vulnerability identified (CVE-2023-21629).

The Android 13 July security patch is now rolling out to various Pixel devices, including the Pixel 4a, 4a 5G, 5, 5a, 6, 6 Pro, 6a, 7, 7 Pro, 7a, and Tablet. Notably, the update size varies, with the Pixel Tablet receiving a 23.27MB update and the Pixel 7 getting a 21.67MB update.

This update also marks the first regular security update for the Pixel Fold and Pixel Tablet, both of which were announced at Google I/O in May and started shipping in June. While the update is currently rolling out to Google Pixel devices, some Samsung handsets have already received it. Users can easily check for the update by going to Settings > System > System update on their Pixel devices.

Google is apparently planning on launching a new Dashcam feature that will be making its way its Pixel series of smartphones. The feature was recently spotted after it was accidentally released on the Play Store. So here’s all we know about the new feature.

Google Pixel phone to soon feature a Dashcam Mode

The new feature from the Search Engine giant was spotted on the Personal Safety app’s latest build, which is dubbed 2023.04.27.532191641.8-dogfood. This build featured the new Dashcam mode. As the name suggests, the mode let’s your Pixel smartphone to record video and audio while driving. Dashcams in general are pretty handy and help capture valuable information in case of any accidents or other issues while on the road.

For those unaware, the Personal Safety app offers a number of other features like Emergency Sharing, Car Crash Detection, and Safety Check. So once the Dashcam mode is rolled out, users can access the feature through a dedicated “Dashcam” shortcut on the home page. When the Pixel phone is in Dashcam mode, the smartphone can still be fully used. In other words, you still have access to navigation via Google Maps.

Notably, the feature is built to be automatic and users can also start recordings when they connect to specific Bluetooth devices like the car stereo system. Although, the recordings will end when the connection is ended. Furthermore, recordings will automatically be deleted after three days unless saved manually. For better storage efficiency, the app also compresses videos to around 30MB for every minute and a maximum recording will only go up to 24 hours. This news also arrives after Google released a Kenny G inspired ringtone for its Pixel phones.

Its main goal is to alert users to potentially dangerous loud sounds around them, urging them to step away or reduce the volume if possible. While not entirely new, both Android and iOS have warnings for users listening to music at high volumes for long periods.

Additionally, Apple Watch has a similar feature to the loud sound alert that is coming directly to Google Pixel models. Of course, this is more of a nice-to-have feature rather than a critical innovation. However, exposure to loud sound for a long time can cause hearing damage, including temporary or permanent hearing loss, tinnitus (ringing in the ears), and hypersensitivity to sound. It can also lead to physical discomfort such as headaches and dizziness.

Aside from the loud sound alerts Google is working on adding new search shortcuts to its Pixel Launcher, which include Search Chrome, Search Files, and Search Photos, in addition to the existing shortcuts for Google, YouTube, Maps, Play Store, Settings, and Contacts. The company has also made changes to the At a Glance settings list and introduced new icons to improve the user experience and enhance the launcher’s visual appeal.

For this feature, users can go to their screen lock settings and enable “Enhanced PIN Privacy” which will disable animations while entering the device PIN. Furthermore, users can also choose if they would like recommendations in “home search” based on their search history or not.

The new update is also bundled with several bug fixes. Issues like the volume panel flickering or the notification bar closing too quickly have been addressed, making for a smoother and more seamless user experience. So, whether you’re rocking a Pixel 7 Pro or a Pixel 4a, there’s something for everyone in the latest patch. Good news for Pixel Buds Pro owners as Google has finally released the much-awaited Spatial Audio with Head Tracking update. This firmware update (version 4.30) brings in several new features such as a 5-band EQ, left and right balance control, and bug fixes, improving the previous version (3.14).

To help users understand how to use this new feature, Google has published an instructional video on its YouTube channel. However, this feature is only available on newer non-A-series Pixel devices like the Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro. Unfortunately, Pixel 6a owners won’t be able to access this update.

Google has also updated the Pixel Buds Help page with a guide on how to use this feature, its benefits, and the apps where it’s available. As of now, the feature is only available on HBO Max and Netflix Premium, but it’s expected to work with other streaming apps that support movies and shows with 5.1 surround sound or higher.

The Spatial Audio feature creates an immersive audio experience that makes the content sound more realistic, and with Pixel Buds Pro, it creates a multi-speaker effect, similar to a surround sound setup, making it ideal for movies and TV shows. It may take a few days for the update to be available to all Pixel Buds Pro owners.

Once the update is installed, users can easily enable the feature by going to the “Spatial Audio” section in the Pixel Buds app. From there, they can enable toggles for Spatial Audio and Head Tracking and hear the difference with the demo. You can also watch this video on the subject.

Xiaomi launched the Xiaomi 13 series globally today, and besides featuring Leica-branded camera setups and the latest Snapdragon processors, the flagship smartphone series will be also receiving Google’s Pixel-Exclusive Magic Eraser, making it the first non-Pixel Android device to have Magic Eraser at launch.

As part of the Xiaomi and Google partnership announcement at MWC Barcelona 2023 today, retail buyers will be able to enjoy Google’s Magic Eraser feature on their latest Xiaomi 13 Pro and standard Xiaomi 13. However, there’s a catch, they will only be able to use the Magic Eraser for free on the Xiaomi 13 series for the first 6 months, as part of the free 6-month Google One subscription given to Xiaomi 13 series users to experience Google’s software magic.

For those unaware, this month Google announced that the tech giant is bringing Magic Eraser to all Google One subscribers, including both Android and iPhone users. Magic Eraser is previously a Pixel-exclusive photo-editing feature, which tried to seamlessly remove unwanted parts of a picture with software processing. It is heralded as one of the main reasons why people prefer Google’s camera suite over other Android smartphone makers.

In addition to the free 6-month Google One subscription, Xiaomi 13 and 13 Pro retail buyers will also enjoy up to 6 months of YouTube Premium with ad-free access to YouTube and YouTube Music app.

As announced by Xiaomi at MWC 2023, Xiaomi 13 Pro and Xiaomi 13 users will also get one out-of-warranty repair without labour cost within the first 12 months after purchase. Xiaomi also promises that both smartphones will 3 generations of Android system updates, along with 5 years of security patch updates, up from the 3 OS and 4-year promise it offered on last year’s Xiaomi 12 series.

It should be noted that these privileges listed above are exclusive to the standard Xiaomi 13 and Xiaomi 13 Pro, and the privileges are not applicable to the Xiaomi 13 Lite.

Google’s not done with your old Pixel 4 quite yet

The Pixel 4 and 4 XL, launched by Google in October 2019, were seemingly forgotten due to the end of software support. However, a recent surprise update may revive the Pixel 4. Android expert, Mishaal Rahman, has discovered a new build for the device, which is an experimental build not yet released to the public.

This new build, based on Android 13 QPR1, is part of Google’s Android Privacy Sandbox program, where the company tests new technologies for ad tracking without relying on third-party cookies. The update also includes December 2022 security patches, which some Pixel 5 users are still waiting for.

While this build doesn’t guarantee continued updates for the Pixel 4 and 4 XL, it is an official first-party build of Android, giving Pixel 4 users hope that their devices may not be obsolete just yet. With Google’s renewed commitment to the Pixel line, there may be further updates in the future.

The new build is not available for the Pixel 4 XL as it doesn’t have access to the Privacy Sandbox. The new build for the Pixel 4 is a positive sign for concerned users, as Google only promises three years of Android version upgrades and a year of security patches for its flagship devices, compared to Samsung’s four years of OS updates and an additional year of security patches.

Live wallpapers date back to Android 2.0, when most phone batteries were too tiny to sustain them for a long time. Since then, phones (and batteries) have come a long way. Live Wallpapers are animated wallpapers that move subtly in the background. Some live wallpapers are just like videos, while some of them change perspectives based on the phone’s gyroscope.

Last week, Google released a new version of the Pixel Live Wallpapers app that somehow caused the app to lose compatibility with older Pixel devices.

As the update to version 2.1 of the Pixel Live Wallpapers was rolled out, users reported that they were unable to find the application in the Google Play Store. It was unclear if this was a deliberate move by Google or a technical bug. However, with the release of the next update, Google quickly rectified the situation and restored compatibility to all older Pixel phones. 

To change the live wallpaper on your Pixel devices, simply navigate to Settings > Wallpaper & style > Change wallpaper, and you’ll be presented with a variety of options. If you’re on the Pixel 6 or Pixel 7 series, you can add a special touch via the Live Bloom wallpapers. Once you’ve found the perfect live wallpaper for you, tap it to see a preview, and then tap the check mark at the bottom right to apply it to your home and/or lock screen. You can also equip wallpapers from your own image gallery via the Wallpaper & Style application.

Google Pixel Devices benefit from timely updates, especially those who are enrolled in the Android 13 Beta Program. The Android 13 Quarterly Platform Release (QPR) 2 Beta 2 was released earlier this month, on January 10th. The update fixed some bugs with the device. The next update was scheduled for the first week of February, however, it has been pushed out by Google earlier than expected. 

The 9MB update had two important fixes. One fix was for the bug that was forcing devices to not connect to 5G networks, even if one was available. The second fix was for a bug where devices were unable to drop an existing Bluetooth connection, even an encrypted one, after receiving a command to disable the encryption layer for that connection. The update, with the build number T2B2.221216.008, is available to all compatible Pixel devices that are a part of the Android 13 QPR Beta Program. That includes Pixel 4a, Pixel 4a (5G), Pixel 5, Pixel 5a, Pixel 6, Pixel 6 Pro, Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro. 

If you are looking to become a part of the Android 13 QPR2 Beta Program, visit this link here and pick your Pixel device from the list. Once you do that and see a button labelled “Opt-in”, tap it and follow the directions. Keep in mind, however, once you sign up for the program, you will have to wipe your phone to exit the Beta program.

Alternatively, you can wait until you install the upcoming stable version of Android 13 QPR2, which should be out on March 6th.

Google Pixel 7 series users are reporting poor video call quality when using apps such as Google Meet, Telegram, Instagram, and WhatsApp. The specific issue being described as producing a very blurry and smeared image using both the front and rear cameras. The issue was initially thought to be caused by video quality limitations within Google Meet, but it has also been reported to affect other apps.

To corroborate the observation, a Redditor produced three screen captures from a Google Meet call, one from a Pixel 7, one from an iPad Pro 2018, and one from a Pixel 3XL, and the comparison showed that even the dated Pixel 3XL produced a much better picture quality than this year’s Pixel 7.

It is widely speculated that certain apps do optimize video for certain phone models, however, this doesn’t seem to be the same issue as it is more noticeable in Google Meet, an app created by Google, that if anything should be optimized to work better with Pixel phones. This issue has been reported since October, and it is hoped that Google will address it in a future software update. In the meantime, Google Pixel 7 series users may want to consider using alternative video call apps or devices to ensure better video call quality.

Google had originally planned to roll out an update to enable 5G capabilities on its smartphones in India in December, but the release has been delayed for an unknown reason.

Users who have installed the Android 13 QPR2 Beta 2 update on their Google Pixel 6 and Google Pixel 7 series of smartphones will now be able to use 5G connectivity on both the Jio and Airtel networks. However, it’s important to note that this is a beta update, and a stable version of the update is expected to be released in the coming weeks.

The Google Pixel 6a, Pixel 7, and Pixel 7 Pro are the three smartphones that currently support the 5G network in India. The Pixel 6 is powered by the first-generation Tensor processor, while the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro are based on the Tensor G2 processor. With this latest software update, users can now enjoy a low-latency 5G network with improved download and upload speeds.

The Pixel 6a is the most affordable 5G smartphone from Google and supports 19 5G bands.
