Initially, the company had sold the smartphone with a very enticing price tag of Rs. 4,999 for the first 5 million customers. From March this year, the handset was made available with a starting price of Rs. 5,999. Xiaomi has now confirmed that it has managed to sell more than 10 million units of the Redmi 5A smartphone since its launch. Citing IDC survey data for August 2018, Xiaomi claims that the Redmi 5A is the fastest selling phone that has managed to achieve the milestone in a short span of time.

According to, Raghu Reddy, Head of Categories and Online Sales, “These remarkable milestones are the result of the immense love and admiration from our millions of Mi Fans and customers. Redmi 5A is one of our blockbuster smartphone products due to the amazing features it offers coupled with great quality and truly honest pricing, which makes it an undebatable choice in its category and with the recently launched Redmi 6A we have made it even better. Xiaomi as a brand will continue to bring innovative products of great quality with best specs and ensure that it is accessible to all consumers across India.”

Due to a case filed by Ericsson in 2014, Xiaomi is barred from launching phones powered by MediaTek chipsets in India. After the 2014 verdict, Xiaomi has been launching only Snapdragon chipset powered phones in India. However, now that the companies involved in the legal battle have reached a settlement, India will soon MediaTek powered phones from Xiaomi. Probably, Xiaomi may begin by launching the Redmi 6 and 6A phones in India.

During the recently held Computex 2018 event, David Ku who is the Chief Financial Officer with MediaTek had revealed that the lawsuit filed by Ericsson on Xiaomi has been settled and the latter is allowed to use MediaTek chipsets on phones heading to India. He even added that Xiaomi will be soon launching a MediaTek chipset-based smartphone in India. However, he refrained from revealing the name of the MediaTek SoC powered phone that will be debuting soon in India.

The Redmi Note 4 from 2016 is the last Xiaomi phone featuring a MediaTek chipset. This edition was launched in China. As far as India is concerned, the first-generation Redmi Note that was launched in 2014 with MT6592 SoC onboard is the last MediaTek powered phone for the country.

The recently unveiled Xiaomi Redmi 6 is one of the first smartphones to feature the new 10nm Helio P22 SoC designed for mid-range phones. Also, the Redmi 6A is the first phone ever to be driven by the new Helio A22 SoC. With the lawsuit settled, it appears that Redmi 6 and Redmi 6A arriving in India may not feature Snapdragon SoCs.

As of this writing, there is no information on when the Chinese manufacturer will be bringing Redmi 6 and 6A phones to the Indian market. India had received the Redmi 5A in November 2017 and Redmi 5 in March this year. Hence, the Indian arrival of Redmi 6 and 6A could be few months away.

In what can be termed a surprise is Xiaomi’s Redmi 5A grabbing the third spot with 1.8%. It was not only the third best-selling smartphone in the world in March but the best selling Android smartphone.

The Redmi 5A was released in November 2017 as a successor to the popular Redmi 4A. However, the 5A launched with practically the same specs as the 4A and some slight changes in design.

OPPO’s A83 mid-ranger also makes the top 5 list with a 1.8% market share leaving Samsung’s Galaxy S9 to claim the fifth spot. The Galaxy S9+ is 6th and is followed by the iPhone 7 and iPhone 8.

Samsung shows up again, this time at the 9th position with its Galaxy J7 Pro while Apple ends the top 10 list with the iPhone 6.

Counterpoint Research adds in its report that the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have helped Samsung double its share of the high-end market. But the Korean giant is having it rough in the mid-range and low-end category with stiff competition from China’s Xiaomi, OPPO, and Vivo.

Last month, the company had introduced Rose Gold color model of Redmi 5A. The phone was initially launched in India in two colors — Dark Grey and Gold. This new Lake Blue colored model went on sale in India today through online retailer Flipkart and the company’s official online store.

The phone features a 5-inch HD display with 720 x 1280 pixels screen resolution. Under the hood, the device is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 425 chipset that features a 1.4 GHz quad-core processor. It is the same chipset that powers Redmi Y1 Lite, Redmi 4A, Motorola Moto E4, ASUS ZenFone 4 Max, among others.

The device comes in two models based on the memory configuration — 2GB RAM and 16GB of internal storage and 3GB RAM with 32GB of onboard storage. The phone features a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with f/2.2 aperture and a 5-megapixel front-facing camera for taking selfies and video calling. The 5-element rear lens comes equipped with features like LED flash, HDR, Panorama, phase detection auto-focus and Beauty Filter.

While the China model features a hybrid dual-SIM slot, the Indian variant comes with a dedicated microSD card along with dual-SIM slots. At the time of launch, the company said that considering the warm weather conditions in India, they have included dual pyrolytic graphite sheets inside the Redmi 5A that can reduce its temperature by at least 1-degree Celsius.

The phone runs on MIUI 9, which is based on Android Nougat operating system. The device is fuelled by a 3,000mAh battery, which according to the company offers 8 days of standby time, 21 hours of music playback and 7 hours of video playback.

As an introductory offer, Xiaomi was selling the 2GB RAM model of the Redmi 5A at a discounted price of Rs. 4,999 for the first 5 million units. Recently, the company announced that the phone will now be available at its original pricing of Rs. 5,999, indicating that it has hit the 5 million mark within just 3 months of its launch in India.

At the time of launch, the China-based company had announced that the Redmi 5A 2GB RAM model will be available at a discounted price for Rs. 4,999 for the first 5 million units. It now seems that the company has achieved this milestone within 3 months.

However, Xiaomi has not yet confirmed whether the company has sold 5 million units. Earlier, Manu Kumar Jain, Vice President of Xiaomi and Managing Director of Xiaomi India had tweeted that the company sold 1 million units of the Redmi 5A entry-level smartphone in less than a month.

The company has announced that the Redmi 5A will now be available at its original price of Rs. 5,999 through online retailer Flipkart as well as company’s own online store in India. The 3GB RAM model is priced at Rs. 6,999 in India.

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A was launched in India in December last year but was first announced in China in October. The new version comes with 3GB of RAM as well as 32GB of internal storage and is priced at just 699 Yuan (~$110). The price is just 100 Yuan higher than the 599-Yuan 2GB RAM variant but apart from the improved memory, the device retains the design and other specs of the 2GB RAM variant. We had expected this variant to be announced in due cause considering the Redmi 4A also had the same 3GB RAM variant introduced some months after its launch. Buyers will have the chance to snag up this variant on March 12 at 10 AM via Jingdong (JD.com).

Xiaomi Redmi 5A was first launched in October 2017 as a successor to highly successful Redmi 4A which made its debut in 2016 but turned out to be one of Xiaomi’s highest-selling product alongside the Redmi Note 4. The device features an ultra-light all-metal body which is one aspect where it is different from the Redmi 4A. The design is also very much similar to the Redmi 4A in many aspects like the bottom speaker grills at the back and the rear camera which is tilted to the left side. The little difference in the design at the rear is that the speaker grills are located under the fused antenna band design in this case unlike on the Redmi 4A where it is on top the bottom line which looks like antenna band line. At the top, the line runs through the rear camera and flash on the Redmi 4A but in this case, the antenna line is under the rear camera and flash.

Talking about the specs, Xiaomi Redmi 5A sports a 5-inch display with HD resolution (1280 x 720p). The device is powered by a Quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz which is paired with a 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable internal storage. At the back, the phone features a 13MP sensor with PDAF and LED flash. While the front camera is a 5MP sensor. It packs a 3,000mAh battery which is touted to deliver up to 8 days of standby time.

However, Xiaomi fans are eagerly waiting for the arrival of Redmi Note 5 that is expected to arrive with better specs along with dual rear cameras. Fresh information suggests that the three variants of Redmi Note 5 and a Redmi 5 Plus are likely to debut before Nov. 11.

Singles’ Day that is arriving on Nov. 11 is the biggest online shopping festival of China. It appears that Xiaomi is looking forward to make the most of the upcoming 11/11 annual shopping festival by announcing the Redmi Note 5 and Redmi 5 Plus before it.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5’s Standard variant that will be driven by MediaTek Helio P25 is likely to come in two choices. There could be 16 GB and 32 GB storage options with each one featuring 3 GB of RAM. These models are rumored to be respectively priced at 999 Yuan (~$150) and 1,299 Yuan (~$195).

The Redmi Note 5 High model is speculated to be driven by Snapdragon 630 chipset. It is rumored to include 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. It may be priced around 1,599 Yuan (~$240). Even though the Redmi Note 5 has recently appeared on Geekbench with an aging Snapdragon 617 chipset, it seems that there is some error with the listing as it is pegged to be fueled by SD 630 SoC.

As previous reports have revealed, the Redmi Note 5 models may arrive with 5.65-inch FHD+ display from Pegasus that will deliver an aspect ratio of 18:9. It will not only sport full screen design, but also feature dual rear cameras with 16-megapixel + 5-megapixel sensors. The rear side of the Note 5 will also include a fingerprint reader.

Xiaomi is also rumored to announce a cheap full screen design phone called Redmi 5 Plus before 11/11. It is likely to feature a 5.7-inch display that will support 720 pixels. It may feature Snapdragon 450 chipset. Speculations are rife that it will be coming with a price tag of 799 Yuan (~$120).

More information on these Xiaomi phones are expected in the coming weeks.

The budget smartphone was released today by Xiaomi without any prior indication. The tech giant skipped rolling out the drums for the launch, perhaps because the model is a cheap device with quite little features that would make it stand out from the others. The Redmi 5A takes over the reins from the Redmi 4A which was launched last year. The new model packs almost the same specifications as the Redmi 4A, save some few differences.

Design

The Xiaomi Redmi 5A features an ultra-light all-metal body which is one aspect where it is different from the Redmi 4A.

Specifications

Specs wise, the Redmi 5A sports a 5-inch display with HD resolution (1280 x 720p). The device is powered by a Quad-core Snapdragon 425 chipset clocked at 1.2GHz which is paired with a 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable internal storage. There is no 3GB RAM version, at least not yet. It is possible Xiaomi will announce that later just like it did with the Redmi 4A. At the back, the phone features a 13MP sensor with PDAF and LED flash. While the front camera is a 5MP sensor. It packs a slightly smaller 3,000mAh battery whereas the Redmi 4A has a 3,120mAh battery under its hood. That shouldn’t be much of a concern because the SD 425 chip is a 64-bit processor which ensures the phone isn’t power hungry just like the power-efficient Redmi 4A. Besides, 120mAh is a negligible difference. Xiaomi touts the battery of having 8 days of standby time.

Furthermore, the Redmi 5A will get its interface from the MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat. Other features include dual-SIM slots- one micro and one nano-SIM slot, dual Standby support, 4G LTE, 3G, WiFi, Bluetooth and lots more. One of the SIM slots doubles as a microSD slot that can take up to 128GB microSD card. The Redmi 5A comes in Champagne Gold, Pink and Grey colours.

Xiaomi Redmi 5A Price & Availability

The new Redmi model will cost 599 Yuan (around $90) and reservation is presently on. Both online and offline sales would commence at 10 AM tomorrow via Mi Mall, Mi Home, JD.com, Lynx, Suning Tesco, Mi Stores, China Mobile Mall and several other retail outlets across China.

First, the design of the Redmi 5A isn’t very different from that of the Redmi 4A. Though it appears to feature a metal body in place of the plastic one of the 4A. There are two antenna lines at the top with the LED flash and rear camera sitting in between them. There is also a speaker grille at the back.

The text on at the base of the image mentions the phone will have an 8-day standby battery life and will weigh 137g. These info reinforce the catch phrase on the poster that roughly translates into “Lightweight and Long Battery Life”. Although the Redmi 5A is heavier than the Redmi 4A which weighs 131.5g and even comes with a larger 3,120mAh battery.

The poster also confirms that the phone has a Qualcomm Snapdragon processor and will come with MIUI 9 pre-installed.

TENAA listing revealed the Redmi 5A will have a 5” HD display and feature a Snapdragon 425 processor. It will come in 2GB of RAM + 16GB ROM and 3GB RAM + 32GB ROM variants and have a 3,000mAh battery.

An image of the Redmi 5 Plus has surfaced on Weibo. However, the image does not show the actual handset, but it looks like a closeup shot of the box package or a poster of Redmi 5 Plus.

The Redmi 5 Plus moniker suggests that it could be an advanced edition of Redmi 5. Since Xiaomi had released Redmi 4A has a lower variant of the Redmi 5, the company is likely to launch Redmi 5A also this year alongside Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus. The Redmi 5A has been allegedly spotted on TENAA’s site which suggests that the company may soon debut the Redmi 5 series in China.

There is no information available on the specifications of the Redmi 5 Plus. Like the predecessor Redmi phones, the Redmi 5 Plus is pegged to feature a 5-inch display. It is likely that the Redmi 5 will sport the same design as the upcoming Redmi Note 5.

Recent leaks have revealed that the budget phablet would be driven by MediaTek Helio P25 and it would be coming in two variants such as: 3 GB of RAM + 32 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. The handset is also expected to arrive in a Snapdragon chipset edition.

Speculations also hint that the Redmi Note 5 would be blessed with dual rear cameras that would include a 16-megapixel sensor and a 5-megapixel sensor. It is expected to house a 4,000mAh battery. Like the predecessor Redmi Note phones, the Redmi Note 5 is slated to arrive with a 5.5-inch display and it would be featuring a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. Other speculated specs of the phablet include 12-megapixel selfie snapper, MIUI 9 flavored Android 7.1 Nougat and a USB-C port.

The base model of the Redmi Note 5 is expected to arrive with a price tag of 999 Yuan (~$151). The higher model is rumored to be priced at 1,299 Yuan (~$196).

The modest specs of the smartphone suggest that it could be the Redmi 5A.

The Xiaomi phone that has surfaced on TENAA has a model number of MCT3B. The handset measures 140.44 x 70.14 x 8.35mm and its weight is 137 grams. The smartphone is available in black, rose gold, gold, white, blue, red, pink, gray and silver.

It features a 5-inch TFT display that produces a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. The dimensions of the Xiaomi MCT3B smartphone is quite similar to the Redmi 4A and it also features a same-sized HD display. However, the Redmi 4A has a IPS LCD screen whereas the MCT3B has a TFT screen.

Just the Redmi 4A lacks a fingerprint reader, the MCT3B also lacks a fingerprint sensor which also indicates that it could be a successor of Redmi 5A. The smartphone is running on Android 7.1.2 and is powered by 1.4 GHz processor. It has an internal storage of 32 GB. Users can add up to 128 GB of microSD card on its external storage.

The Redmi 4A has 1.4 GHz Snapdragon 425 chipset, 2 GB of RAM and 16 GB of storage. It also features a microSD card slot.

The rear camera of MCT3B could be of 13-megapixel or 8-megapixel that carries support for full HD recording. It has a front-facing camera of 5-megapixel. The Redmi 4A has a 13-megpaixel rear camera and a 5-meapixel selfie snapper.

The Xiaomi MCT3B has a 3,000mAh battery and carries support for connectivity features like dual-SIM, 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi and more. The Redmi 4A has a larger battery of 3,120mAh capacity. The Chinese manufacturer had announced the Redmi 4A in November 2016. Hence, it appears that Xiaomi could be prepping on a successor phone for Redmi 4A.

Xiaomi has recently announced the Mi A1 Android One phone in partnership with Google that comes with a stellar dual camera system and a budget pricing of Rs. 14,999 (~$235). The Xiaomi Mi A1 will be not only online but also going to release through multiple offline channels in India. It would be releasing in 37 markets across the world. The smartphone will allow the Xiaomi brand to reach wider markets, but there is no confirmation on when it will be coming to the U.S.
