Xiaomi has finally unleashed the much-expected ceramic version of the Mi Mix 2, nearly two months after the flagship model was announced. The Mi Mix 2 comes in two versions, a ceramic version with an aluminium alloy frame and a full ceramic version. What just got released is the full ceramic version and you know what, it comes with a mammoth 8GB RAM and even the internal memory is 128GB. As a result of the design and ramped up memory, the version clutches a higher 4699 Yuan ($706) price tag.

The Mi Mix 2 Ceramic version is available in the traditional black colour and also has a White colour variant. which is a rare addition. Recall that Xiaomi had also released a White coloured variant for the Mi Mix at CES 2017 and the wide acceptance of that colour edition may have spurred the release of the same variant for the Mi Mix 2.  Apart from the paint job, the White variant also comes with a couple of tweaks, like having a 18K gold ring around the rear camera and fingerprint sensor also mounted at the rear.

Apart from the gold-plated ring, the entire body is covered in ceramic which has gone through a number of tests to ensure that it meets the desired standard. The body has been subjected to a temperature test of up to 1400°C while also subjected to a strength test of up to 240 tons. When Xiaomi officially unveiled the Mi Mix 2 on September 11, it did announce that there was going to be a special edition with a full ceramic body that is available in white and black. The all-ceramic body will not feature a metal frame like the regular versions and it is expected to have 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. A Xiaomi official has now afforded us an opportunity to have a peek at the Mi Mix 2 White Ceramic Special Edition by sharing a couple of photos of the special version via his Weibo handle. Cui Baoqiu who is the head of Xiaomi’s Cloud platform specifically indicated that the images were those of the white all-ceramic exclusive edition and it seems he was already using the device! 

Taking a look at the device, what readily comes to mind is the beauty which it radiates. This isn’t meant to be an exaggeration but the white edition is a clear reflection of the beautiful design the Mi Mix 2 comes with. We can’t call this a bezel-less model, as the white color brings out clearly, the bezels on all sides but the fact remains that these are very tiny bezels except at the bottom edge where the selfie camera is situated. There is a black border on the edge of the display which could have hardly been noticed on the black variant but it is there.

The back of the white ceramic edition is no less beautiful, sporting a sleek mirror finish with curves reminiscent of the Mix 2 but the weight may vary since there is no metal fuselage on this version. The rear camera, LED flash and fingerprint sensor’s location wasn’t change but the inscription “Mix Built By Xiaomi” is conspicuously missing. This could either be because we are looking at a prototype here or Xiaomi won’t be including that in the body. 

Apart from the 8GB RAM + 128GB storage which the special edition features, it is expected with the same 5.99-inch FHD+ display with a resolution of 2160 x 1080 and is powered by a Snapdragon 835 chip with an Adreno 540 GPU. The Mi MIX 2 packs a single 12MP Sony IM386 sensor at the rear as well as a 5MP selfie camera. There is a 4,400mAH battery under the hood with QC 3.0 and a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. There is also dual WiFi band support and it supports 43 bands, 22 of which are LTE bands, including band 20. The Mi MIX 2 runs on MIUI 9 based on Android Nougat.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 opened up for reservation on the same day it was launched in China. In just one day, the reservations had hit over 250,000 in less than 24 hours after it was launched. Two days after, the reservations have already surpassed 700,000 on Xiaomi’s Mi Mall and stood at 705,434 as at the time of filing this report.

The Mi Mix 2 reservations only opened on Mi Mall and there are no indications when the device will be available on other channels. While not all the reservations will transform to real sales, the figures show the level of interests the device commands. The Mix 2 will go on sale on September 15 and we still expect the sales to be a record breaker. he reservations will be opened until September 15 and we expect the figures to surpass 1 million persons. It remains to be seen if there is enough stock to prevent long queues of persons waiting to buy the Mix 2.

Just last week Xiaomi Mi Mix designer Philippe Starck thrilled us with a concept video of the Mi Mix 2. The video proved to be a very popular one, amassing over 115k views especially due to its full-screen design which is touted to have even lesser bezels than the Mi Mix. Since then more leaks of the device has been making the rounds but leaked photos have been lacking. But now, the rear cover of the Mi Mix 2 has leaked purportedly from the supply chain.

There is no way for us to verify if the casing is actually for the Mi Mix 2 but it indeed looks like one for a phablet device and the design resembles the Mi Mix’s rear cover with two vertical openings another for an LED flash at the side of the first opening. If the Mi Mix 2 will be featuring a dual camera setup which is the rave of the moment, then there isn’t room for a rear fingerprint sensor which suggests the use of a front in-display fingerprint sensor or the 3D face recognition technology Xiaomi is rumoured to be developing for use on its flagships. But these are just openings, so we cannot determine if it is going to house a camera and fingerprint sensor or dual cameras.

The cover is coloured in white and the glossy look makes it look like it has a ceramic body. But the two screw ports by the side of the USB Type-C port suggest this could be having a metal body since the Mi Mx doesn’t have such screws. There is a rumour already that the Mix 2 will be ditching the use of ceramics which usually slow down the mass production process.

The device is said to feature a 12MP Sony IMX386 sensor at the rear which should be more powerful than the not-so-inspiring 16MP OV16880 sensor on the Mi Mix. Now, more details of the Mi Mix 2 have emerged, one of which includes that the flagship will be launched on September 12 this year. If this is true, it means the device will be dropping sooner than expected but it also supports talks of Xiaomi hoping to use the sleekly designed Mix 2 to grab some market shares from Apple by releasing the model at the same period the iPhone 8 will be launched. Already, we recently saw the Mi Mix take a cut in its price up to 500 Yuan and that could indicate the Mix 2’s launch is very close.

In addition, the Mi Mix 2 is said to come with a 6GB + 128 GB RAM combo on one version and that is pretty almost certain as it was spotted on Geekbench recently. There is going to be a second memory variant that would have 8GB of RAM and a whopping 256GB storage inside, according to the latest details. That also doesn’t sound ridiculous as the Chinese industry is gradually shifting towards 8GB RAM sized flagship models. The details also include that the Mix 2 will come with a price tag of 3,999 Yuan (around $599) for the 6GB RAM variant and 4,999 Yuan (~$749) for the 8GB RAM variant.

It is no longer news that Xiaomi will be launching its next generation Mi Mix 2 this year and that the device is already in the works with Phillipe Starck still providing the design. Details of the device have been very scarce in coming as Xiaomi has maintained a long silence about it, perhaps with the intention of springing a surprise. We already know, though, that the Mi Mix 2 will come with a high screen to body ratio and recently a photo shared by Lei Jun suggests that the device will adopt a similar 18:9 aspect ratio used on the Galaxy S8.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 renders have allegedly popped up online from China and one of the things that need to be noted is that there will likely be a variant sporting a Bright Silver body just like the Mi 6 did. The Mi Mix 2 is also said to come with an enhanced display with the screen-to-body ratio said to be as high as 95%. Apart from that, the renders also show the device as coming with well-rounded edges and a nearly bezel-less design. Bezels will only be present on the bottom edge with the other aspects completely bezel-less and curved on all the display edges.

We only get to see the front aspect of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 from the renders so, we still don’t know if there is a rear fingerprint sensor but there are speculations that Xiaomi may not feature an in-display fingerprint sensor if the device is released this year. The Mi Mix features a virtual navigation key and also will use a Cantilever piezoelectric ceramic technology which replaces the traditional earpiece due to the absence of bezels.

Xiaomi is said to partner with AAC technologies who will develop a better, new generation technology known as AAC actuator which would be used for the ear piece sound output. The AAC actuator is said to achieve a better screen sound, especially at low frequency. It also works better with the 3GPP standard. The source of this leaked details also tips that the flagship model may be released around September, at the same period the iPhone 8 is coming out, obviously to grab some market shares from the Apple flagship due to its price tag which is expected to be less than iPhone 8’s. The price is rumoured to be up to 4999 Yuan (around $750) but this is just a speculation, nothing of such has been officially revealed. We expect more leaks to emerge as the month rolls by.

Xiaomi Mi Mix’s designer Philippe Starck, Thursday made a visit to Xiaomi’s headquarters in China in what could be a pre-launch visit for the Mi Mix 2. Philippe Starck had made a similar visit to the Beijing-based headquarters of the tech giant a couple of months back. During that visit, it was disclosed that the French design would still design the Mi Mix 2.

The company shared some photos of the Mi Mix designer having an exciting time with staffs at the headquarters.Obviously, the visit is to discuss the Mi Mix 2 and they did state that. Xiaomi’s CEO even stated point-blank that Starck was at the headquarters to discuss the next generation of Mix. We didn’t get to find out the details of the discussion but we believe things will unravel as time goes on.

Already, there are rumours that the Mi Mix 2 will be released next month but we’re not so sure about that. An earlier rumoured had tipped the Mi Mix 2 to make its debut in the second half of the year and H2 2017 begins next month. Even though Xiaomi doesn’t drop the Mix 2 next month, it is likely the device may drop very soon. In addition, the Mi Mix 2 may be launched along with the Mi Note 3 just the same way Xiaomi announced the first-gen Mi Mix and Galaxy Note 2 together.

The Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 is rumoured to feature an in-display fingerprint technology which would make the first smartphone from an indigenous Chinese manufacturer to use the fingerprint security feature, the Mi Mix 2 is also expected to come with a screen-to-body ratio higher than the 91.3% screen-to-body ratio the Mi Mix came with. There are also likely to be a number of innovative features on the next-gen concept flagship phone.

Following the release of the Xiaomi Mi MIX, we have seen quite a number of manufacturers announce their own versions. Despite that, Xiaomi is also working on a successor for the original variant. While the launch is still far away, online re-seller Gearbest has the Mi MIX 2 listed on its site.

There are multiple listings of the phone with various prices and the specs are a mash-up of that of the Mi MIX with a few major changes like the processor, camera, RAM, and battery capacity.

Ever since Xiaomi hinted that the next generation Mi Mix 2 would still be designed by acclaimed French designer – Philippe Starck, we have been inundated with fan-generated concept renders of the device which gives an idea of some of the features the Mi Mix 2 would come with.

Some of the concept renders are based on rumored features of the upcoming device. As always, the final product may end up not having the same design as the concept renders but apart from the fact that they are a delight to behold, some of the features on the concepts may find their way into the actual device.

A new concept video render of the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2 has appeared online, putting on display some innovative features of the Mix 2. Already, the Mi Mix 2 is rumored as coming with a 93% screen-to-body ratio and that is well-represented in the video. But perhaps, the latest feature we are seeing in a Mi Mix 2 render is the 12MP front camera which slides in and out of the back of the device. This is likely due to the high screen-to-body ratio with little bezels at the top for the camera module to be located there.  It is unclear whether Xiaomi would adopt such innovation considering it doesn’t look too feasible.

The Mi Mix 2 is rumored to come with a dual rear camera setup but this render doesn’t capture that. Instead, there is a single rear camera just like on the Mi Mix with the rear fingerprint sensor sitting just under the camera. The LED flash is by the side of the camera. None of these are certain, though, until Xiaomi takes the wrap off the next-gen concept device, which they may not be doing so soon. You can watch the full video from down below.
