Oppo is coming with many new announcements at Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019). They have already sent invites for Oppo 2019 Innovation event on Febrarury 23rd in Barcelona. As per the leaks and rumors in the past, Oppo is working to showcase 10x optical zoom feature at the event. Despite yesterday’s Oppo’s Vice President comments on foldable devices, the leaks about new Oppo foldable device keeps sprawling.

Today, new patent details have surfaced which is revealing a new design of Oppo foldable devices. There are already plenty of foldable device patents that the Chinese company has registered. We have already seen a lot of foldable device patents, and there’s one another patent that has surfaced today.

As per the new patent published on World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) website, the camera module is present on one side and earpiece on the other side. It carries a single large display and can be folded like a book. It can act as a smartphone and tablet on being folded and unfolded.

The new drawings reveal that the device will have a proper casing for the camera module when folded. The groove on one side of the device helps to cover the bump of the camera. It ensures an overall smooth appearance for the foldable device. Other details about the patent are yet unknown, but we expect to see a foldable device very soon from Oppo.

Additionally, Oppo is coming with a new F11 Pro device which carries a pop-up selfie camera. As like of Oppo R17 last year, the new Oppo F11 Pro also carries various other innovations. It is set to feature advanced camera modules along with Snapdragon 855 chipset on board. It will feature a 48 megapixel + 5-megapixel main camera with a motorized 32 MP pop-up camera on the front side.

In connectivity, it is expected to feature Bluetooth 5.0, WiFi, GPS, USB Type-C. It is touted to feature a 4500 mAh battery with fast 18 W fast charging.

Samsung India plans to reclaim its lost crown by generating $4 billion sales from A series devices

The Korean giant has seen rough days in the past some years due to increasing competition. They have lost almost its mid-level market to Chinese brands such as Xiaomi, Oppo and Vivo. Now, Samsung seems to tackle the rising competition with the newly launched Galaxy M series and Galaxy A series of devices. As per new reports, Samsung is planning to garner sales of worth $4 billion from its A series by the end of 2019.

Already, Samsung Galaxy M series has received a lot of praise for its M series entry-level devices in India. Similarly, Samsung will launch various other mid-level devices ranging from Rs 10,000-Rs. 50000 this year. In order to further boost the sales, Samsung will make them available across offline channels also. While talking about the Samsung’s Plan, Rajiv Singh, senior vice president of mobile marketing at Samsung India said, “2019 started off extremely well for products at Samsung with the M series. We are now creating a whole portfolio for the A series, which we will be launching this from March. Till June, we will launch phones every month.”

In order to make most out of the mid-range market, Samsung will also announce many new Galaxy A series of devices. Further, Rajiv Singh talked about the plans to increase Samsung’s revenue in India. He quoted, “The impact will have on the revenue of Samsung as a single brand is going to be unprecedented. It is going to make a record for the India market. Our mission is to make a $4 billion brand for a single series this year in India.”

They are betting hard on the new Galaxy A series of devices. Samsung is working day and night to compete against the Chinese brands. The Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo have impacted the growth of Samsung in the past some years. Samsung India’s net profit has fallen below 11% to Rs 3712 crore in the financial year 2018. Overall, the growth has increased by 10% to Rs 61065 crores.

Despite continued growth, Samsung slipped from the first position to Xiaomi in terms of total shipments. Although, the Korean giant has managed to remain on the top in revenue generation in the Indian smartphone market.

Further, Rajiv Singh added that “The series will add to the overall top line and market share… the volume that goes through and the value that gets generated that’s our ambition for our A series. Xiaomi, LG, Alcatel and Oppo have reduced the usage of NFC chips among phones

NFC which stands for Near Field Communication is quite useful technology among smartphones. As per a Mobile Overview report by ScientiaMobile, manufacturers like Xiaomi, LG, Alcatel, and Oppo are not using the NFC in their devices. Mainly, they have reduced the addition of NFC chips in the devices designed for the Asian region. As per the official data, LG had reduced the usage of NFC chips from 69% in 2015 to 55% in 2018. Similarly, Xiaomi’s share of NFC enabled devices have decreased from 11.9% to 8.85% this year.

Moreover, Oppo had reduced the share to at least 3% from 28% in 2018. Well, the decrease is significant in Asian markets due to some reasons. As per the report, the reduction is seen in these brands because they ship their most of devices to east Asian markets. These markets are not mature enough for the high-end devices, the mid-range and entry-level devices rule here. The removal of NFC from devices reduces the cost of the device by a few dollars.

Even though, countries like India and China use QR codes more often rather than the NFC chips. Many payment services like WeChat Pay, PayTM, UPI and Alipay are prominent in these countries for payments. These companies decline in NFC usage is due to their penetration into the developing markets.

On the other hand, manufacturers like Huawei, Motorola, HTC, Sony and Apple tremendously improved the NFC availability across their devices.

Overall, the trend of NFC usage is quite prominent in the Western world rather than the East Asian countries. Due to various constraints, the NFC usage is quite limited in developing countries. So, the overall decline in mobile phones with NFC has considerably reduced over time.

Samsung announces Galaxy Tab S5e and Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2019) ahead of Unpacked event

Samsung‘s big event is scheduled for February 20 but the Korean giant has already announced a number of products ahead of the launch. We guess it is to prevent next week’s product launch from being too crowded. Today, it announced the Galaxy Tab S5e and the Galaxy Tab A (2019) which are pretty interesting devices.

Galaxy Tab S5e

Don’t be fooled by the name, the Galaxy Tab S5e isn’t as powerful as the Galaxy Tab S4 which is currently Samsung’s most powerful tablet at the moment but it does pack some punch too. And of course, the name hints at the arrival of the Galaxy Tab S5 in the future.

The tablet has an aluminum body and comes in black, gold, and silver. It measures 245 x 160 x 5.5 mm and weighs 400g making it Samsung’s lightest and slimmest tablet till date. However, that slim profile means the audio jack gets to go.

The Galaxy Tab S5e has a 10.5-inch 2560 x 1600 Super AMOLED display with slim bezels. It is powered by a Snapdragon 670 processor with 4GB/6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB of expandable storage (512GB max.).

It has a 13MP primary camera on its back and an 8MP selfie camera. There is Dolby Atmos which is integrated with AKG-tuned quad speakers. Samsung says the speakers have auto rotate stereo technology that automatically determines if you are holding the tablet in portrait or landscape mode.

The Tab S5e runs Android 9 Pie out of the box with One UI on top. There is Bixby 2.0 so you can use it as a hub to control your smart home devices. It packs a 7,040mAh battery with support for fast charging via a USB type-c port. The tablet comes with Spotify and a free three months premium subscription for new members. There is no audio jack but there is a Type-C connector in the box. A fingerprint scanner is buried under the power button and there is also support for face unlock.

Samsung says the Galaxy Tab S5e will launch in the second quarter of the year with a starting price of $400 in the US. There will be LTE and Wi-Fi only variants priced at €479 and €419 respectively with availability scheduled for April 5 in Germany. Samsung says pre-orders will begin March 14 and run through April 4 with a free pair of AKG Headphones Y500 included. It will also be available via carriers later in the year.

The tablet will have an optional keyboard sleeve that connects via pogo pins if you need to use it for some light work. It also has Samsung DeX in case you want to use it as a desktop PC. We think it would have been really nice if the Galaxy Tab S5e shipped with an S Pen.

Galaxy Tab A 10.1 ( 2019)

The Galaxy Tab A 10.1 (2019) also launched today, in Germany. It is much cheaper than the Galaxy Tab S5e and also comes with less powerful specs. It has a 10.1-inch 1920 x 1200 IPS LCD display surrounded by much thicker bezels. There is an Exynos 7904 under the metal housing and it is paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage (400GB max.).

The Tab A 10.1 (2019) has an 8MP rear camera and a 5MP front-facing camera with support for face unlock. There are dual speakers with Dolby Atmos, Bluetooth 5.0, and a USB Type-C port. It packs a 6150mAh battery and comes in black, silver, and gold too. It also ships with Android 9 Pie with One UI on top.

Sony is ready to launch various smartphones at the upcoming Mobile World Congress (MWC 2019) in Barcelona. Already, multiple reports have hinted the specs and other details of the forthcoming Xperia devices. In addition, a new leak has surfaced leaking most of the details about the upcoming entry-level device, Xperia L3. As per the source, Sony Xperia L3 is a refined version of its predecessor. It carries various improvements with a better display and hardware specs.

The new renders of the Xperia L3 have surfaced just ahead of its official launch at MWC 2019. As per the renders, the Sony Xperia L3 will sport a dual rear camera set up along with a side -mounted fingerprint sensor. It will have a 5.7-inch display with a 1440 x 720 resolution. It’s 18:9 screen ratio will bring broader viewing experience.

As far as the look is concerned, Xperia L3 will come with an LED flash and a dual camera on the rear side. Moreover, on the bottom side, it will feature a speaker grill and a USB type-C port. It will feature a 3.5 mm audio port on the top side. Surprisingly, Sony is going to debut a side fingerprint sensor which will help users to unlock device more comfortably.

Sony Xperia L3 is set to feature a 3GB RAM coupled with a 32 GB storage. Currently, the processor details are not out but are expected to host a mid-level chipset. In the camera department, there will be a 13 megapixel + 2-megapixel depth sensor on the backside. An 8-megapixel camera is present on the front side for beautiful selfies.

As per the source, the new entry-level device will host 3300 mAh battery and will run on Android 8.1 Oreo. It is said to retail at the price of 199 euros which roughly converts to ~1519 Yuan.

Oppo R19 not coming confirms Vice President, Shen Yiren

Oppo did an outstanding job last year by announcing Oppo R17 with an in-screen display. Many tech enthusiasts applauded it for innovation. There are many other announcements which followed as replies on Weibo by Shen. As per the VP of Oppo, the Chinese company is keen on bringing new selfie centric devices to emerging markets. Unknowingly, it seems Yiren has confirmed the Oppo F11 Pro launch in Asia Pacific region in upcoming months. It is the Oppo’s next innovative device with a revolutionary pop-up camera design. Oppo F11 Pro will come with a front full screen and Snapdragon high-level chipset. Further, it is expected to hit the markets in Africa such as Kenya, Morocco, and the Gulf region.

Further, he even discussed the foldable displays and said they are not providing any significant value. He said this on the basis of experience he had with the engineering prototypes of the foldable display. As per him, the foldable displays are not serving the purpose and are not solving any problem. These views won’t end all the rumors which stated that Oppo is working on a foldable device. Indeed, it will give rest to those rumors which were seen on the web from the recent past.

In January, Oppo CEO Chen Mingyong also discussed their views regarding the upcoming 5G devices. In an interview with Qualcomm China, Chen said that they are working on to build a 5G compatible device. Oppo is soon going to launch a new smartphone with Snapdragon 855.

Design

Energizer Power Max P18K Pop has undoubtedly the most impressive design. The known batteries manufacturer realized a phone with a screen-to-body ratio close to 100 percent without the aid of a notch or other similar solutions, thanks to pop-up front cameras. On the other hand, note that this handset is very thick due to its monster battery, so if you want a device that you can easily keep in a pocket or bring everywhere you want, go for the Moto G7 Power that also comes with a smaller display and a better build quality. It is splash resistant and rocks the Gorilla Glass 3 protection for the display.

Display

Xiaomi Mi Max 3 is one of the phablets with the biggest screen, it is almost a tablet, and that is why I choose it as the winner of this comparison. Big displays such as the one found on the Xiaomi Mi Max 3 are currently very rare to find on a phone. Further, it is a display that offers a higher resolution than Moto G7 Power and the same Full HD+ resolution as the Energizer Power Max P18K Pop. So even on the qualitative side, it is a very nice panel.

Specs & Software

The most performing handset is the Energizer Power Max P18K Pop. Despite its huge battery, the company did not release it as a flagship-class device. But it is an upper-midrange with the powerful Helio P70 SoC by MediaTek, that is superior to 630 series chipsets by Qualcomm. The second place goes to Xiaomi Mi Max 3 that is equipped with a Snapdragon 636 chipset and up to 6 GB of RAM, but unlike its rivals, it comes with Android Oreo pre-installed instead of the latest version Pie.

Camera

It is a hard challenge between Xiaomi Mi Max 3 and Energizer Power Max P18K Pop. We still do not know the complete specs of the triple rear camera found on the Energizer device: they will be unveiled at MWC 2019. But this handset will probably have better camera performances than Xiaomi Mi Max 3, overall. It even rocks a dual front camera that will be able to capture depth info in a very nice way. The camera department is not the strongest point of the Moto G7 Power by Motorola, but it is still sufficient for social networks and decent low-light shots.

Battery

There are very high chances that Energizer Power Max P18K Pop is the smartphone with the longest battery life in the market, alongside a few other devices. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 probably takes the second place, but we can not say it for sure until we test the Moto G7 Power thoroughly, as its HD display, the software optimization and its Snapdragon 632 chipset may be hiding surprises. Fortunately, all the devices come with a fast charging technology, that is a very important thing for devices with a huge battery if you do not want to keep your device connected to a wall charger for a lot of hours.

Price

You can currently get a Xiaomi Mi Max 3 for just €230/$260, Moto G7 Power will debut soon with a €210/$236 price tag, while the price of the Energizer Power Max P18K Pop will be unveiled at MWC 2019. Energizer Power Max P18K Pop is the most complete handset, but we are yet to see if its value for money will be high and sufficient to make people prefer it to the Xiaomi Mi Max 3.

Lenovo Watch X packs various security bugs reveals a researcher

Lenovo Watch X, launched last year as an affordable smartwatch for users in China. It was mainly designed to attract budget smartwatch segment users. Despite its low price tag, it was not well received by users due to various flaws in it. As per users, the performance of the watch was not as per the expectations. Well, in addition to the performance, its security has also been out an order with various bugs and issues as revealed by a researcher.

Erez Yalon, head of security research at Checkmarx has revealed that there are many severe bugs in the Lenovo Watch X. There are several vulnerabilities in the watch which can allow attackers to get hold of confidential information. It can even trigger the hijacking of accounts and spoofing of phone calls. Erez has further added that the hacker can change users’ password and can steal all data on the watch.

In total, there are six vulnerabilities which undermine the privacy and security of the users. As per the Erez Yalon, the watch was using unencrypted communication to send confidential data to the server. There’s was no encryption on the data being communicated between the servers and the device. He even tested by entering his email and password on the watch. Later, he intercepted the same information which went to the server in unencrypted plain text. He addressed that “The entire API was unencrypted, All data was transferred in plain text.”

The usage of plain text can allow sniffer to track any user with the Watch’s location data (latitude and longitude) being sent over to the server. Even though, there’s no validation check on the password reset request, allowing to change the password without any confirmation email.

Lenovo Watch X wrong permissions can allow attackers to see the incoming calls log. Moreover, a write permission policy can let anyone send the command to the watch. It can trigger any action on the watch which is a matter of concern for its users.

It is quite easy and simple to sniff the LG Watch X said Yalon. Further, he noted that the number of permissions on Watch X could lead to more severe security issues. In order to fix the bugs and consolidate the security issues, Yalon has recommended a few things. He said encrypted data would prevent a couple of security issues on the App. Further, fixing API permission can eliminate most of the vulnerabilities.

Although, in response to the recent research by Erez Yalon, Lenovo said that they are pushing an update. In actual, Lenovo spokesperson Andrew Baron quoted, “The Watch X was designed for the China market and is only available from Lenovo to limited sales channels in China. Our [security team] team has been working with the [original device manufacturer] that makes the watch to address the vulnerabilities identified by a researcher and all fixes are due to be completed this week.”

TSMC to commence mass production of Qualcomm’s 7nm Snapdragon 855 chipset soon

Since Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek is already out of the high-end chipset market, that segment is expected to be dominated by flagship phones that will be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 chipset. Already, there are indications that Samsung’s next-generation flagship, the Galaxy S10 series will be powered by the new chipset but it won’t be the first phone to have the chip. Xiaomi is also billed to unveil the flagship Mi 9 on February 20, same day Samsung will launch the Galaxy S10 models.

From the Taiwanese supply chain comes the news that Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) will soon commence the mass production of the Snapdragon 855 chipset. This is expected to cater for a large number of orders Qualcomm is said to have received from OEMs like Samsung, Xiaomi, LG, Nokia and several others.

The orders from Qualcomm will, no doubt, boost TSMC’s revenue in no distant time. The foundry was already facing a slump in its revenue due to reduction in orders for iPhone chips. The revenue is expected to pick up around July when most of the orders must have been delivered. TSMC projects 2019 to be a slow year for it and the entire semiconductor industry. However, it believes the competitiveness of its 7nm node manufacturing will ensure it still outperforms the industry average.

The Snapdragon 855 is Qualcomm’s first 7nm chipset and it features a multi-core AI engine which Qualcomm claims to deliver up to three times better AI performance compared to its previous mobile platform, the Snapdragon 845. The new chipset also comes with Computer Vision (CV) ISP for enhanced computational photography which performs the same way as Google’s Night Sight feature for Pixel devices, thus substantially improving imaging in low-light areas.

Redmi Note 7 may soon be available on open sale as it goes on flash sale again after just three days

Xiaomi today put up the Redmi Note 7 on another flash sale, the second of such since after the Chinese New year. The first flash sale after the Chinese lunar new year took place on February 12 and then, just three days later, it has gone on sale again. The gap between the first and second flash sale is an indication that the available stock has been boosted. Don’t forget the first post-New year flash sale was sold out in minutes.

The Redmi Note 7 has been a very hot-selling device since its first sale. The first round of sale was sold out in just about 8 minutes and 36 seconds with hundreds of thousands of units sold. The third round of flash sale was even sold out faster within just 2 minutes and 50 seconds. So far, Xiaomi disclosed that it has sold over 1 million units of the Redmi Note 7 in China. The device is meant to go on sale in India later this February, specifically on February 28. The Chinese manufacturer may likely push the device to other markets around the globe in no distant time.

As a reminder, the Redmi Note 7 comes with a powerful specs lineup with the premium Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset at its heart. On the camera end, the device packs a 48MP main camera in a dual camera arrangement.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ variant with 12 GB RAM, 1 TB storage spotted on AnTuTu and Geekbench

Samsung Galaxy S10+ is debuting with Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10e on next Wednesday. Rumors have revealed that the South Korean company will be releasing the Galaxy S10+ in two models such as 6 GB RAM + 128 GB storage and 8 GB RAM + 512 GB storage. Also, there will be a premium version of the Galaxy S10+ that will come with ceramic body. It is said to be a limited-edition of the phone with 12 GB of RAM and 1 TB of storage. This monstrous variant has appeared on Geekbench and AnTuTu benchmarking platforms to reveal its performance prowess.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ Geekbench Listing

Recent reports have confirmed that the model number of Galaxy S10+ is SM-G975F. The Exynos 9820 chipset variant of the SM-G975F with 12 GB of RAM and Android 9 Pie OS has been spotted on Geekbench. In the single-core and multi-core tests of Geekbench, the handset has respectively scored 4450 and 9753 points.

Samsung Galaxy S10+ AnTuTu Listing

The Samsung SM-G975F has also appeared with the same specs on AnTuTu. The listing reveals that the Galaxy S10+ carries support for full HD+ resolution. It is nothing but the default resolution supported by the phone. Like the predecessor model, it will deliver up to quad HD+ resolution. The AnTuTu listing reveals that the Galaxy S10+ has recorded an average benchmarking score of 326,185.

Rumors are rife Samsung will be releasing the Snapdragon 855 mobile platform edition of the Galaxy S10+ in select markets like the U.S., China, Canada and so on. The Exynos 9820 variant will be released in other regions. The premium edition of the phone is expected to release in two color choices such as Luxurious Ceramic White and Ceramic Black. Xiaomi suffers loss as truck transporting Mi phones is looted in India

Phone theft is one of the global epidemics which has refused to go. According to Consumer Reports, 3.1 million Americans were the victims of smartphone theft in 2013, up from 1.6 million in 2012. Another form of phone theft is carried out by raiding retail stores. Until recently, we never thought trucks conveying phones will be the target of robbers since the trucks are usually unmarked. But in India, it is fast becoming a thing.

A truck conveying Xiaomi cell phones has reportedly been robbed in India. The truck which was transporting Mi phones worth Rs 1 crore was on its way to Kolkata from Sri City. The robbery took place at a truck lay-by bay where the driver had stopped to rest for a while. The driver was then beaten and tied to a tree and then drove his truck away. The miscreants, who were said to be about four in number, reportedly stopped the vehicle at a nearby village where they transferred the cell phones to another unidentified truck and fled with the spoils. Locals, who found the driver tied to the tree, rescued him and informed the police, who swung into action to trace the truck.

The Indian Police force is already investigating the incident which they believe was preplanned and is suspected to have got the cooperation of company “insider”. The truck was an unmarked one so it is highly likely that the robbers had prior knowledge of what was inside. We do hope the crime gets unravelled soon but until then, Xiaomi India may have to device stricter security protocols for transporting its cargo.
