Apple recently launched its most affordable iPhone yet, the 16e, and it comes with some notable upgrades. The model lands squarely between the iPhone 15 and the standard iPhone 16, not just in features, but also in price. 

But there’s a catch. The iPhone 15 is getting cheaper in many markets as it is a gen-old model now. And with the 16e only a modest step up in price, there’s a common debate among all of us. Should I go for the discounted iPhone 15, or spend a little more for the newer iPhone 16e?

It’s not a simple yes-or-no scenario. On paper, the iPhone 16e brings some newer internals and a slightly larger battery. But there are trade-offs, and the decision depends on how much you value certain hardware features over others.

Look That’s… Almost the Same

Apple hasn’t strayed far from its existing design language in either phone. Both phones have flat front and back panels with nearly identical dimensions. The iPhone 15 measures 147.6 x 71.6 x 7.8 mm, while the 16e comes in just slightly shorter and narrower at 146.7 x 71.5 x 7.8 mm. 

The weight difference is also barely anything, 171 grams versus 167 grams. Both use an aluminum frame and glass front and back, and both maintain IP68 water and dust resistance.

That said, there are enough visual differences to tell them apart. The iPhone 15 has a Dynamic Island module on the front and a diagonally arranged camera sensor in back. Whereas, the 16e settles for a conventional static display notch and a single camera at the back. 

The colors also differ slightly, with the iPhone 15 offering more playful options like pink, green, and yellow, while the iPhone 16e sticks with black and white. 

Brighter on the 15, Smoother on Neither

Both phones sport a 6.1-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display. They support HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and both are protected by Ceramic Shield glass. The differences lie in brightness.

The iPhone 15 has the upper hand in peak brightness, reaching 2000 nits versus 1200 nits on the iPhone 16e. That makes it easier to use outdoors in direct sunlight. 

However, Apple hasn’t given either phone a high refresh rate screen. 60Hz remains the norm for non-Pro iPhones even in 2025. So if you were hoping for smoother scrolling or gaming, you’ll need to look elsewhere in the lineup.

Performance is a clean win for the 16e

The biggest internal change is the chip. The iPhone 15 runs on the Apple A16 Bionic, which powers the iPhone 14 Pro series. It’s still a capable processor, built on a 4nm process, with a 6-core CPU and 5-core GPU.

The iPhone 16e, on the other hand, gets the newer Apple A18 chip, built on a more efficient 3nm process. Clock speeds are slightly higher (4.04 GHz on the performance cores vs. 3.46 GHz on the A16). You also get 8GB of RAM versus 6GB on the iPhone 15.

That should theoretically offer better multitasking and longer-term software support. But in day-to-day use, you’re unlikely to notice major differences unless you’re doing something resource-heavy. App launches, camera performance, and general navigation feel nearly identical between the two.

Cameras

Here’s where the iPhone 15 arguably pulls ahead, or at least offers more flexibility. It features a dual-camera setup: a 48MP main sensor and a 12MP ultrawide sensor. The iPhone 16e drops the ultrawide entirely and sticks to a single 48MP camera.

That means no ultrawide photography on the 16e. For users who rely on that second lens, this could be a noticeable downgrade.

That said, the 16e does include Apple’s newer 3D spatial audio recording feature for both the main and front cameras, something the iPhone 15 lacks. But unless you’re capturing content for an Apple Vision Pro, that feature feels more niche than essential.

Battery and Charging

The iPhone 16e has a 4005 mAh battery, a sizable jump over the iPhone 15’s 3349 mAh. That’s a real difference, on paper, at least. With more efficient 3nm silicon, the 16e might last a bit longer in daily usage, especially under lighter loads.

But there’s a catch in charging. The iPhone 15 supports faster wireless charging: 15W with MagSafe or Qi2, and it can reverse charge up to 4.5W. The iPhone 16e drops MagSafe entirely and maxes out at 7.5W wireless charging on standard Qi pads.

Wired charging remains at 50% in 30 minutes on both models, and both use USB-C, though only at USB 2.0 speeds.

By the time you buy either of these phones, both will run iOS 18. While the iPhone 16e ships with 18.3.1 and the iPhone 15 requires an upgrade, the user experience is fundamentally the same.

The A18 chip in the 16e might get software support a year longer than the A16 in the 15, though Apple hasn’t made that timeline public yet. Historically, iPhones receive around five years of updates, and that likely holds for both.

Connectivity and Sensors

The iPhone 16e adds support for NavIC positioning (India’s satellite system), which may improve accuracy in certain regions. Otherwise, both phones offer dual eSIM support, Face ID, satellite emergency services, and Ultra Wideband (Gen 2 for iPhone 15).

Both have stereo speakers and no headphone jack, as expected. Storage options start at 128GB and go up to 512GB on both.

Price

The iPhone 15 starts at ₹63,999 in India, with sale prices bringing it down to as low as ₹58,999. Meanwhile, the iPhone 16e starts at ₹60,000. Even at its original price, that’s a minimal difference, for which you get wireless charging support, better cameras, and a more modern design. Considering the sales price, you get even better value. 

As is the truth, the 16e is a cut-down version of the iPhone 14. It’s that it comes with a slightly better chip and improved battery life. 

The Bottom Line

If you’re a casual user looking for the best value, the iPhone 15 is still a practical and well-rounded device, especially at its current price. It offers solid performance, versatile cameras, and faster wireless charging.

The iPhone 16e is newer and has some meaningful improvements. It has a slightly better processor, more RAM, and longer battery life. But those changes are incremental, and the single camera setup limits its appeal for users who want more shooting flexibility.

Unless you need the latest chip or a bit more RAM for future-proofing, the iPhone 15 probably remains the better deal, at least for now.

The update also simplifies file sharing between iPhones and PCs. Samsung’s Galaxy S24 also saw good results, partly due to a focus on GenAI features that appealed to buyers. The Galaxy A series, known for its affordable pricing and long software support, took four spots in the top 10, mainly due to its popularity in growing markets and focus on affordable models.

Apple is resorting to significant price cuts on its iPhone 15 lineup in mainland China to revive sluggish sales. Major online retailers like JD.com and Alibaba’s Tmall platform are offering the phones at new lows.

For instance, the top-tier 256GB iPhone 15 Pro Max is now priced at 7,949 yuan ($1,100) on these platforms. That’s a big 2,050 yuan (20%) reduction from its initial September 2023 launch price of 9,999 yuan.

The base 128GB iPhone 15 also sees a 23% price drop, going from 5,999 yuan ($829) to 4,599 yuan ($635).

Note that Apple’s official mainland online store is listing the iPhone 15s at their original launch price. The discount is only available on major e-commerce platforms. 

Apple is believed to be offering such aggressive discounts to reignite Chinese audience interest in their flagship product. For those unaware, iPhone sales in Greater China (including mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan) dipped by 8% to US$16.4 billion in the March quarter.

Apple’s unusual discount strategy in Chinese online marketplaces began in January. It came after several Chinese manufacturers like Xiaomi and Honor slashed prices of their phones on both online and offline markets. 

So in the same month, Apple itself offered discounts of up to 800 yuan on its mainland online store for iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, AirPods, and Apple Watches.

According to market research firm Counterpoint, Apple’s market share in mainland China’s smartphone market shrunk to 15.7% in the March quarter, down from 20.2% a year earlier. 

The decline placed them behind Vivo (17.4% share) and Honor (16.1% share). Huawei, with its successful 5G handset comeback featuring the Mate 60 Pro, secured a 15.5% market share during the same period.

Despite the concerns, the discounts on iPhones may be yielding some positive results for Apple. Data published by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology earlier this month suggests that shipments of foreign-branded smartphones in China grew 12% compared to March 2023. While the academy didn’t specify the brand, Apple typically dominates foreign handset sales in mainland China.

The company now states that the phones will retain up to 80% of their original capacity over 1000 charge cycles, doubling the previous estimate of 500 cycles. Moreover, Apple has not released any hardware or software updates. The company retested the iPhone 15 series to reach this conclusion and updated the information accordingly.

However, the timing of this change raises questions. While we’d like to maintain our “faith in Apple’s honesty,” the change aligns suspiciously with the upcoming EU regulations that will assign an energy rating to the battery life of phones. The European Union is introducing new regulations that will assign smartphones energy efficiency ratings from A to G, similar to the system used for refrigerators and washing machines.

These ratings will reflect the phone’s battery life and its overall energy efficiency. So, Apple’s primary goal is to align its phones with European Union standards. These changes will have minimal impact on iPhone users. The expectation of 80% battery capacity after 500 charge cycles still applies to the iPhone 14 series and its predecessors.

So the video is highlighting the focus editing feature that is supported for standard photographs taken on an iPhone 15 or an iPhone 15 Pro. You may use a slider to change the degree of blur in the backdrop in the Edit interface by tapping on the aperture symbol.

Even though the photo was not initially taken in portrait mode, this feature is accessible. Tapping on one of the persons or items in the picture will alter the focus of a multi-subject picture.

Apple introduced the iPhone 15 Series on the 12th of September 2023, at the Apple Event held in California. Obviously, the iPhone 15 Series was a big leap by the brand. However, back on the 15th of November, various local media sites reported that the Weibo hashtag “Apple Fails, Netizens Demand Refund” trended on the internet.

In the final two hours of the Double 11 promotion, the price of the iPhone 15 Series at Apple shops was reduced by an additional 200–300 yuan. Netizens who bought the device earlier during the sale felt that Apple had deceived them and sought a refund.

After a big controversy, the final statement says that since this is not a misleading promotion, price protection rules won’t really apply in this case. Later, Apple customer care in China clarified that the platform’s coupons, not a real shop discount, were the reason for the price drop. So the usual price protection policies won’t be applicable.

Unfortunately, the price of this performance was reflected in the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s cost as a $30 increase.

Apple’s first 5x telephoto camera was another factor that increased the cost of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The camera has a focal length of 120mm and uses a quadruple reflection prism to reflect light. This allows users to take clearer close-ups of more distant objects. Apple also used a 3D sensor-shift OIS technology that can make 10,000 micro-adjustments per second. These features make the iPhone 15 Pro Max’s camera system 34% more expensive than the iPhone 14 Pro Max’s.

As you know, Apple used titanium alloy for the frame of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. This decision reduced the weight of the device by about 20 grams, making it the lightest Pro Max model ever produced. However, everything has a price, and the cost of the new case increased by 18% compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

The Apple iPhone 15 sales started with a bang in China when it was introduced. The first two hours registered a whopping 253% compared to last year.

However, a few weeks later, when the initial sales reports were released, it was shocking to learn that the overall sales of the iPhone 15 went down by 4.5% as opposed to the iPhone 14 in 2022.

Researchers attribute this trend to the resurgence of Huawei. Now, nearly two months post-launch, there’s a considerable amount of unsold inventory that retailers are offering heavy discounts to boost sales.

China is gearing up for the upcoming Singel’s Day sale season, which is considered the largest in the world. Retailers have already started offering discounts on some of the products.

JD.com (Jingdong), a leading online retailer, is providing heft discounts on the Apple iPhone lineup. These limited-time offers are changing now and then.

Yesterday, the vanilla iPhone 15 with 256GB storage was discounted by ¥1,201 (~$165). But today’s deal has listed it at ¥851 (~$115) off, including the plus model. Similarly, there’s a ¥800 (~$110) discount on iPhone 15 variants as well.

These offers are available on a first-come first-serve basis. Also, not every color and storage version is discounted.

Either way, it is probably the best time for Chinese consumers to get their hands on the latest Apple iPhone 15 models.

I was planning to upgrade to a new smartphone during this year’s festive sale in India. I was particularly interested in buying a flagship phone.

When the Galaxy S23 Plus went official, I had set my eyes on it. Having used the Galaxy A52 since its release, I was too accustomed to the Galaxy ecosystem as it works well with my Chrome OS tablet (Phone Hub) and Windows laptop (Phone Link). I even invested in Galaxy Buds Plus and Galaxy Watch 4 over the past two years.

But out of nowhere, I got attracted to the Xiaomi 13 Pro due to its camera prowess, which I require for my reviews’ product shots. The Galaxy S23 Plus’ camera paled in comparison.

Also, neither Samsung nor retailers offered discounts on the bigger S23 which retails at ₹94,999. This made the Xiaomi 13 Pro a much better deal with its discounted price tag of ₹74,999.

I visited my local Xiaomi Studio store multiple times to try Xiaomi’s most premium smartphone in India. I loved every bit of it, except the front camera, which is its Achilles’ heel.

However, I decided not to buy the Xiaomi 13 Pro after doing some research. And to my surprise, I jumped over the fence to join the dark side by purchasing an iPhone 15.

Yes, you heard it right. I wanted an Android premium phone but I went with an iPhone instead.

I knew from the beginning that the Xiaomi 13 Pro is one of the best smartphones on the market, thanks to our review team from China. When the phone hit global markets, it became more apparent to me after going through media and user reviews from multiple regions.

Especially, in India, Xiaomi 13 Pro offers a lot more value for ₹79,999. Don’t listen to people who say otherwise. It is not overpriced at all as you don’t get hardware like this on any similarly priced products.

But then why I decided not to buy it? It has to do nothing with the phone but with the history of Xiaomi’s premium smartphones in India.

Xiaomi stopped launching its Mi series flagships in India after the Mi 5 in 2016. Anyways, the Mi Mix 2 did receive a limited release in 2017.

Then, three years later in 2020, the company brought the Mi 10 to India during the worst time possible (COVID-19 global pandemic). It was later followed by Mi 11 Ultra, which also suffered from bad timing (India’s deadly COVID-19 second wave).

Not only sales of these products tanked but they were plagued with hardware issues following software updates. Both of them were discontinued quickly.

Then, in 2021, Xiaomi didn’t give up and debuted the Xiaomi 12 Pro in the country. This device is still being sold at a cheaper price more than a year after its release.

It was a breath of fresh air but with a quirk. It houses the infamous Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip, which results in poor thermal and battery performance.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro, on the other hand, does not have any issues like its predecessors so far. But I still couldn’t trust the company’s after-sales support for premium handsets as they have been terrible so far. 

The firm was unable to fix the WiFi issue on the Mi 11 Ultra. It only recently issued a free upgrade to Xiaomi 12 Pro two years later.

Also, you never know which MIUI update will break your device’s hardware. Xiaomi really needs to work on it instead of stopping system updates altogether, like on the Redmi Note 10 Pro.

The Xiaomi 13 Pro is perfectly fine right now. However, I am skeptical about its future, given Xiaomi’s history so far.

I don’t believe in upgrading smartphones every year. And when I am investing a premium amount, I not only expect longevity but also good after-sales service, be it official or third-party. Thus far, these things do not resonate with Xiaomi’s premium handsets in India.

So then again why I went with the iPhone 15 instead of the Galaxy S23 Plus? As I mentioned earlier, lack of discount is the first reason.

Secondly, Apple hit it out of the park with the iPhone 15, which starts at ₹79,900. The new base iPhone arguably has better cameras than the S23. Yes, the lack of a zoom camera is painful for my usage but the level of detail you get from the new 24MP shots is really good.

I am yet to settle down with the whole iOS thing. But so far, I am enjoying the device. Interestingly, the 60Hz display doesn’t bother me though I use the iPhone 15 alongside the OnePlus Nord CE 3 (review) sporting a 120Hz screen. 

I wouldn’t call the iPhone 15 a perfect smartphone for its asking price. But I find it better than the options I had in mind.

I could have waited for the Galaxy S24 series, which is expected to release in January. But the non-Ultra models are rumored to feature the new Exynos chip in India. We all know how terrible Samsung’s own chipsets have been lately in terms of thermals and battery life.

So this was the story of how I joined the dark side. Not by choice but by force.

Insiders in Shenzhen’s Huaqiangbei had been warning about the lack of demand for the iPhone 15 series, with substantial inventory remaining unsold and few rushing to make purchases. Third-party sources indicate that prices for the iPhone 15 and 15 Plus have fallen below their launch prices.

But is it fair to place all the blame on Apple’s shoulders? Perhaps not.

Challenges Mount as iPhone 15 Faces Tough Competition from Huawei

The resurgence of Huawei‘s flagship smartphones, particularly the Mate60 series, has added to Apple’s challenges. Huawei’s sales have been steadily growing, and the company aims to ship 60 to 70 million smartphones in 2024, a substantial increase from the 30 million in 2022.

Additionally, the iPhone 15 series has encountered various issues since its launch, including overheating and burn-in problems, especially in the iPhone 15 Pro series. Users have reported excessive heat during demanding tasks and software-related problems with apps like Instagram and Uber. Apple has released software updates to address some of these issues, but concerns persist in the user and tech community.

In the US market, iPhone 15 sales also appear lackluster. A special annual survey suggests that many Apple customers are holding onto their older phones and not upgrading to the new iPhone 15, which could lead to stagnant sales next year.

Despite declining iPhone sales, Apple may still see an increase in revenue due to consumer preference for higher-priced models, such as the Pro Max, which starts at $1199.

In India though, the iPhone 15 is the most popular model in the new iPhone 15 series, followed by the iPhone 15 Pro Max. The iPhone 15 Plus has lower demand but still performs better than its predecessor, the iPhone 14 Plus, which faced delays. The base iPhone 15 has a shorter waiting time due to local assembly, about 1 week, while the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, manufactured exclusively in China, have longer waiting times of nearly 3 weeks or more. The higher demand for the Pro Max is driven by its premium features, despite being pricier in India compared to the US.

Apple unveiled the iPhone 15 lineup last month. The latest iPhones have been on sale across the world for about four weeks now.

That’s enough time to understand the preliminary supply and demand of these smartphones. Thanks to an analyst, we have a brief idea regarding the performance of the latest iPhones in India.

Recently, Abhilash Kumar, an analyst at TechInsights, shared his thoughts on the supply and demand of the iPhone 15 series in India.

He says that as per estimates from TechInsights, out of all four new iPhones, the regular iPhone 15 is the highest-selling model in India. It is followed by the most expensive model — the iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Whereas the iPhone 15 Plus has the least demand, however, it is well received compared to the iPhone 14 Plus whose release was delayed by a month last year. Thus, the iPhone 15 Pro sits comfortably in the third place.

Despite the huge demand, the waiting time for the base iPhone 15 is just about 1 week, as a result of local assembling earlier than the previous year. On the other hand, the waiting period for iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max is close to 3 weeks or more.

The iPhone Pro models are still exclusively manufactured in China. While the iPhone 15 Plus will reportedly be assembled in India starting this quarter.

Additionally, Abhilash notes that the demand for the iPhone 15 Pro Max is high in India though it is $720 more expensive than in the US. He mentions features like 5x tetraprism zoom camera, titanium frame, and USB Type-C as the driving factors.

In a brief conversation with us, Mr Kumar disclosed that he personally believes upper-class Indians as the target audience for the iPhone 15 Pro series. So a ₹20,000 (~$240) price difference between the Pro and Pro Max just for a longer-range zoom camera does not bother them. 

Hence, the most premium iPhone model is in more demand in the country, preceded by the standard model.

Although the Pro iPhones got a new chip this year, the baseline devices kept last year’s A16 chip. So many people might have guessed that Apple had simply recycled the motherboards from the iPhone 14 Pro and Pro Max to create the new standard models. However, this doesn’t seem to be the case.

According to iFixit’s Lead Teardown Technician Shahram Mokhtari, the iPhone 15 features a Qualcomm Snapdragon X70 modem. This is the same modem used in the iPhone 15 Pro, and it offers some noteworthy upgrades over the X65 modem used in the iPhone 14. The modem is said to be more power efficient and provides better signal acquisition over long distances.

This means, Apple didn’t simply recycle the motherboard from the iPhone 14 Pro to create the iPhone 15. Instead, they redesigned and upgraded some of the internal components.

Apple iPhone 15 Overheating Fixed?

According to a report, the NFC chip inside the new iPhone 15 series devices breaks after they are charged via the wireless charging pad on BMW cars.

Most complaints are from iPhone 15 Pro users

BMW owners complained on X (formerly Twitter) that their iPhone 15’s NFC chip no longer works after charging the device with their vehicle’s wireless charging pad (Via MacRumors). In case you don’t know, the NFC (Near-field Communication) chip on iPhones facilitates features like Apple Pay and digital car keys.

Users report after they charged their iPhones via their BMW car, they received a “Could Not Set Up Apple Pay” error message in the Wallet app. Apple even replaced some of the devices after confirming the NFC chip actually failed, reports MacRumors.

Most complaints about the issue come from iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max users, the new titanium models with the A17 Pro chip inside. However, there are signs that the regular iPhone 15 and 15 Plus could also be affected. In any case, it’s not yet known which BMW models are involved.

The cause behind this issue is yet to be determined. Also, it’s unclear how widespread the NFC failures are. Apple hasn’t commented on it yet but we expect some response from the company in the coming days. For now, you might want to avoid charging your iPhone 15 with your BMW’s wireless charger.
