A few weeks ago, OPPO launched the A7x, a mid-range smartphone with the new waterdrop notch. Some of you must have been wondering if there was already an OPPO A7. No, there wasn’t one but there’ll be soon and its full specs just leaked.
The OPPO A7 will come with a 6.2-inch 1520 x 720 display which translates into a 19:9 aspect ratio and also means it has a notch. It is powered by the Snapdragon 450 processor with 3GB/4GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage for both variants.
The OPPO A7x will soon get a less-powerful variant called the OPPO A7
The A7 has a 13MP f/2.2 + 2MP f/2.4 dual camera combo on its back and a 16MP f/2.0 front-facing camera. There is no mention of a fingerprint scanner but it should at least have face unlock.
The OPPO A7 will run Android 8.1 Oreo with ColorOS 5.2 on top. The battery capacity is stated as 4,230mAh and the phone will have dual-SIM support (nano only), Bluetooth 4.2, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, and support for USB OTG. When it launches, it will be available in Glaze Blue and Glaring Gold. Its dimensions are 155.9 x 75.4 x 8.1 mm and it weighs 158g.
Earlier this year, in June, Asus announced its first gaming smartphone — Asus ROG Phone. After about four months, the phone is yet to be available for purchase.
However, a listing of the Asus ROG Phone on Chinese reseller suggests that phone will finally be available for purchase by the end of October. It’s noteworthy that the company has not yet revealed the official date of availability.
The listing on GearBest claims that the device will start shipping between October 22 and October 24. The company has listed both models — 8GB RAM with 128GB internal storage and 8GB RAM with 512GB onboard storage, priced at $1,320 and $1,620 respectively.
The smartphone comes with a 6-inch AMOLED display with a screen resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. Under the hood, it is powered by a 2.9GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor, coupled with 8GB of RAM.
It comes with the custom Optiflex, which is the company’s technology that speeds up the phone. On the back, it houses a 12MP Sony IMX363 f/1.7 primary sensor with 120-degree wide-angle lens and an 8MP secondary sensor with f/2.0 aperture. There’s an 8MP front-facing snapper for taking selfies and video calling.
The phone is powered by a 4,000mAh battery and supports Quick Charge 4.0 that can charge the device from 0 to 60 percent in just 30 minutes. There’s also a featured tagged HyperCharge that prevents the device from heating during charging.
During the unveiling of the Asus ROG Phone, the company’s CEO Jerry Shen hinted that the phone will be launched in India in Q3 2018. Later, there were reports suggesting that the device will debut in India in September. However, there’s still no word regarding the phone’s launch in India.
The Asus ROG Phone is also confirmed to launch in the US as well, with the phone being listed on Asus USA website. However, there’s still no information related to its pricing and availability. This gaming smartphone from Asus competes against the likes of Black Shark gaming phone, the Nubia Red Devil, and the Razer Phone.
Huawei is expected to launch a wireless charger alongside the Mate 20 series in October. The wireless charger which has model number CP60 was certified by the FCC a few weeks ago revealing its design and a few details. Now official renders and more specs have surfaced.
The Huawei Wireless Charger CP60 is shaped like a disc and comes in white with a red line that goes around the perimeter. There is an LED in front to indicate when it is powered on and a USB-C input port underneath.
The spec list confirms the Huawei Wireless Charger has a power input rating of 40W (10V 4A). Huawei has a 40W charger on the way and it got certified at the FCC along with the wireless charger. This charger will most likely be the same that will ship with the Honor Magic 2.
When the Honor Magic 2 was partly unveiled at IFA, it was mentioned that it will come with support for 40W fast charging called Magic Charge. It shouldn’t be a surprise if it launched with the Mate 20 series first.
[envira-gallery id=”213354″]
The wireless charger will have a maximum power output of 15W (12V 1.25A) but will be able to charge compatible devices at 5W, 7.5W, and 10W. Just so you know, the maximum power output is lesser than that of another Huawei wireless charger with model number LZ80 that surfaced about a month ago. The LZ80 has a maximum power output of 20W.
Earlier this week, live photos of a dual-screen Nubia phone appeared on the web. We later discovered that the device is the Nubia Z18S which leaked even before the Nubia Z18 was announced. The device has landed on TENAA baring all its specs.
TENAA says the device’s model number is NX616J which is similar to that of the Nubia Z18 (NX606J). The primary display is a 6.26-inch LCD display with a 1080 x 2280 resolution while the smaller display on the back is a 5.1-inch 720 x 1520 OLED display.
The Nubia Z18S is powered by an octa-core processor clocked at 2.649GHz which we are sure is the Snapdragon 845. It will come in 6GB RAM and 8GB RAM variants with 64GB and 128GB of non-expandable storage.
As shown in the live photos, the phone only has two cameras and they are above the smaller display. TENAA says the cameras are a combination of a 24MP sensor and a 16MP sensor. It also confirms the phone has a fingerprint scanner though we still have no idea where it is (probably side-mounted). This is the same camera configuration as the Nubia Z18, so performance should be the same.
The Nubia Z18S will pack a 3,800mAh battery with support for fast charging and run Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. Its dimensions are given as 154.1 x 73.30 x 8.65 mm and weight is 178g. When it launches, it will be available in Gold and Black. Unfortunately, TENAA hasn’t provided any images of the device.
The Nubia Z18S should launch soon since it has gotten its TENAA approval. If you are wondering if this will be available outside China, there is a chance it will. Last year’s Nubia Z17S is currently sold as the Archos Diamond Omega in Europe.
Digital Wellbeing was launched during Google I/O 2018 as a new set of features aimed to reduce our addiction to smartphones. This was done in order to preserve our mental and physical health from the adverse effects of continuous smartphone usage. Thanks to this new app available on Android Pie, users can get reminders when they spend too much time on their phones and much more. The phone is able to detect all the stats about the users’ usage thanks to artificial intelligence. Nokia 7 Plus is one of the few devices which received the Beta version of Android Pie, but until two days ago, Digital Wellbeing was hidden and an APK was necessary to try its exciting features.
Now, a new update (Google Play Store) just rolled out by Google is available on the Nokia 7 Plus, and it opens Digital Wellbeing access to everyone running the Beta version of Android Pie. You can currently install the new features by using this link or by updating the Play Store on your device. Among the most important features that Digital Wellbeing is bringing on the Nokia 7 Plus there is a dashboard which includes info about how and how much the user uses his phone.
The info includes the time spent using every single app, the number of unlocks and even the amount of notifications received on the handset. A feature called App Timers is able to limit the time we can spend on single apps (the user can personally choose the time limit, obviously). There is also an advanced Do Not Disturb mode which prevents the phone to vibrate, ring or light up when the phone receives a new notification. With Digital Wellbeing, the phone is able to enable Do Not Disturb mode at chosen time frames. For more information about all the features brought by Digital Wellbeing, check the Play Store page we linked above.
Red has already revealed the schedule for the release of its upcoming Hydrogen One smartphones. The Red Hydrogen One is commanding quite a lot of attention and it may interest you to know the final release is almost upon us. The device may have crossed the Rubicon as it has reportedly been certified by the US FCC. The FCC listing included quite a generous number of pictures of the device. The pictures are of the Titanium version and they capture the device from all angles, including even the internals.
The Titanium version comes with the model number H1T1000 which draws reference with the Terminator. The body looks quite rugged and we expect it to be since it is made of Titanium. There are also side grips on the side edges as well as a dedicated camera shutter button on the right side of the display.
The Hydrogen One is expected to have a modular design with a set of pogo pins at the back similar to that of the Moto Z series and we can clearly see them on the FCC lited pictures. The pins will be used to connect modules (mods) that add an additional battery or cinema-grade camera amongst others to the phone. As for the specs, Red Hydrogen One is expected to pack a unique 5.7-inch 2560×1440 hi-res display that is capable of running in the regular 2D mode like most smartphones as well as run in a 4View mode (holographic). Red will start shipping its Hydrogen One smartphone on October 9 for those who pre-ordered. The Titanium variant is priced at $1,595. The aluminium variant which costs $1,295 will be available in the US via AT&T and Verizon stores on November 2.
Xiaomi finally took the wraps off the Mi 8 Lite which was launched alongside the Mi 8 Pro on September 19. The two models are quite of high value in terms of their premium designs. While the Mi 8 Pro is postured as a flagship continuation of the Mi 8, the Mi 8 Lite has a mid-range posture and that is reflected in its affordable pricing. Despite falling into the midrange category, the Mi 8 Lite has flagship looks, sporting a premium glass back design. We serve you the hands-on pictures of the Mi 8 Lite Dream Blue colour variant scooped from Chinese blog IThomes.
The Mi 8 Lite is also available in Twilight Gold and Deep Space Gray apart from the Dream Blue variant. All three use the gradient colour hue and that makes the Mi 8 Lite the first Xiaomi phone to utilise the Gradient Hue. There is no denying the gradient colour adds some class to the looks of phones it adorns and that isn’t different with the Mi 8 Lite. Apart from the cool colours, the build of the Mi 8 Lite also sets it apart. The device is just 7.5mm thick which makes it slimmer than Apple’s iPhone XR., Oppo R17, VivoX23 and even the Huawei P20.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite sports a notch at the top of its display which houses a 24MP camera with AI capabilities for selfies and video calls. The device sports a massive 6.26-inch FHD+ display but the 19:9 aspect ratio ensures it fits the palm of most persons well and won’t look too bulky.
The rear design of the Mi 8 Lite includes a dual camera sensor stacked vertically at the upper left corner. The dual camera setup comprises a 12MP main sensor and a 5MP secondary sensor. There is also an LD flash at the side. The device equally packs a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor at the upper middle aspect. While at the bottom is the usual Mi logo. The Mi 8 Lite features a USB-C port surrounded by some nice speaker grills at the left and right sides.
As a reminder, Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset and is available in 4GB+64GB, 6GB+64GB and 6GB+128GB memory versions. It runs Android Oreo-based MIUI 10 out of the box and get its juice from a 3,350mAh battery. The pricing starts at 1399 yuan for the 4GB +64GB memory and sales will commence on September 25 in China. XIaomi recently revealed he Mi 8 Pro will be launched globally soon. We expect the Mi 8 Lite to also make its debut on the global scene along with the Mi 8 Pro.

In the near future, Magic Leap Inc. might get a US military contract to build augmented reality headsets. The US army is now turning to the tech companies for reality equipment to give its soldiers an edge on the battlefield. According to tender documents, it is revealed that Magic Leap has already started doing its homework by partnering with other tech giants such as Microsoft and another startup Improbable.
It could help Magic leap to gain 120000 headset orders from the US Military, raking up around $500 Million. As per the Army description, the deal would help to “increase lethality by enhancing the ability to detect, decide and engage before the enemy.” The new contract can change the Magic Leap’s vision on augmented reality, as currently, it is producing consumer-centric devices.
Magic Leap has also partnered with Sennheiser, an audio company specializing in the production of microphones, headphones and aviation headsets, to work on augmented space reality. The new partnership is done under the banner of Magic Leap’s “Works with Magic Leap” certification program. Sennheiser is coming with more news at the LEAP conference taking place in Los Angeles next month.
Magic Leap has recently announced the Magic Leap One Creator Editon, an AR headset for the general public. It has huge advancements but still, there are significant challenges which should be addressed before preparing for the Army equipment.
US Army has revealed that they have also attended meetings with other companies such as Microsoft for the HUD 3.0 program. Currently, they are reviewing the proposals, and a final decision will be out soon. It requires high-end equipment to portray the digital images of the physical world. Also, they want soldiers to use it in the practice of warfare and the real combats. US Army explained that “HUD 3.0 will allow the warfighter to ‘Train as You Fight,’ with identical training/operational weapons and equipment in any terrain,” the Army writes in a Statement of Objectives.”
It would be interesting to see, how Magic Leap manage to make their devices compatible with other environments such as forests, deserts, and artic from the present indoor environment compatibility.

China became the homeland of affordable phones. With Apple releasing only flagship devices and Samsung struggling every day more to keep its first place in several Asian nations, Chinese smartphones seem to be becoming the best choice for people who want to save money. Meizu 16X, Oppo F9, and Vivo V11 are three devices able to provide huge performances, a good photo quality, and stunning aesthetics without being expensive flagships, and you just need about €300 to grab a unit. If you are asking yourself which unit should you bring to your home, this comparison will clear your ideas.

Design
In my opinion, if you love beautiful smartphones, Oppo F9 (also known as F9 Pro in India) is the one you should go for. It combines a stunning design with originality thanks to its gradient glass back with a diamond-like pattern. Even though it is less original, Vivo V11 (also known as V11 Pro) has nothing to envy with another glass back available in gradient colors. Further, both have a waterdrop notch and almost nonexistent bezels. Meizu 16X has the advantage of being symmetric due to its notchless display, but it is far from its opponents in terms of beauty.
Display
Meizu 16X and Vivo V11 are the ones with the most premium displays, especially thanks to the AMOLED technology making their color rich and brilliant. Further, they both feature an in-display fingerprint reader for authentication. Given the slight difference in viewing quality, you can choose the display by basing on your tastes: do you like a notchless display with more bezels or a notched one with almost absent bezels around it? If you prefer the first, then go for the Meizu 16X, else choose Vivo V11.
Specs & Software
No stories: Meizu 16X is the most powerful handset of the trio. It features the new upper-midrange SoC Snapdragon 710 by Qualcomm which is definitely the best Qualcomm’s chipset if we exclude the 800 series. At the second place there is Vivo V11 with its Snapdragon 660, while at the third, with just marginal differences in performance, there is Oppo F9 and its Helio P60 by MediaTek. All of these devices come with a highly customized Android fork: Flyme OS for Meizu 16X, Color OS for Oppo F9 and Funtouch OS for Vivo V11.
Camera
The camera department which convinces us the most, at least on the paper, is the one from Meizu 16X. We still did not have the chance to click a photo from this device as it was announced two days ago, but judging the specs we believe it will shoot better photos. It has a dual setup with OIS and a six-LED flash, as well as a laser autofocus mechanism: all things that improve photos and videos quality missing from the remaining two handsets which even feature lower resolutions for the secondary sensor.
Battery
Oppo F9 has the biggest battery and it should last a bit more than both Vivo V11 and Meizu 16X. Not only it offers a big capacity of 3500 mAh, but it also features the fastest charging technology: VOOC flash charge, which can provide 2 hours of talk time with just 5 minutes of charging. Given that it has the smallest battery with just 3100 mAh (against 3400 mAh of the Vivo V11), Meizu 16X should have the shortest battery life.
Price
Prices are not an element you should consider so much if you want to choose a device from these three handsets. Meizu 16X carries a $305 price tag, Oppo F9 sells for $330 or less depending on the channel, and Vivo V11 starts from $270 (it depends on the market). I believe Vivo V11 is the perfect compromise it combines a great design with satisfying performance, a good battery life, and a nice photo quality, but if you are one of those users who only care about having the best performance, or you want the best camera out there at a modest price, go for the Meizu 16X.
