ARM Unveils Mali-G52 and Mali-G31 GPUs Amongst Others

ARM, today unveiled two new GPUs, a visual processor (VPU), and a display processor. The new GPUs – the Mali G52 and Mali-G31 bring an improvement in performance and a reduction in power consumption to flagship and low-end/mid-range devices respectively.

Mali-G52

The Mali-G52 succeeds the G51 which was announced back in 2016. Performance has increased by 30% as a result of the use of wider execution engines (8 pipelines as against the G51’s 4). Energy efficiency has also increased by 15%, allowing users more play time even for power-consuming AR games. ARM also says that Machine Learning has improved by 3.6 times.

The GPU is targeted at high power devices like TVs, high-end phones and tablets. ARM suggests a DynamIQ configuration of one Cortex-A75 core paired to seven Cortex-A55 cores to take advantage of the G52’s power efficiency.

The smaller A55s are said to be able to handle smaller tasks simultaneously while the Cortex-A75 handles performance-hungry tasks.

Mali-G31

The Mali-G31 is the first ultra-efficient GPU built on the Bifrost architecture. It is also the smallest ARM processor to support OpenGL ES 3.2 and the latest version of Vulkan API.

The above features will allow developers optimise their apps to work with all Mali-powered devices and hence allow them to reach more devices since the Mali-G31 is tageted at mainstream and entry-level devices.

The 650MHz 28nm HPM Mali-G31 is 20% smaller and has a 20% increase in performance over the Mali-G51.

Mali-D52 and Mali-V52

ARM also announced theMali-D52 display processor and the Mali-V52 video processor. The Mali-D51 has a 50% increase in memory latency and a 30% increase in power efficency. It also brinsg HDR to mainstream devices when paired with Assertive Display 5.

Ahead of its launch, a couple of more details of the devices have surfaced online. The dimensions of both devices are the subject of this latest leak.

The leak shows the models are going to have the same 6.28-inch screen size.The device comes with a Super Vision display which will account for up to 90% of the entire screen. The bezels at the sides are narrow with a thickness of just 1.78mm. The leaked detail also include a resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels which is an FHD+ resolution but takes into account the notch which cut into the display at the top edge. The display has been shown in leaked videos and renders to have a notch just like the iPhone X and the notch which houses the front speakers has a dimension of 324 x 80 pixels.

According to earlier reports from IT House, the OPPO R15 will have two processor model versions with 6GB of memory + 128GB of storage and a battery capacity of 3365mAh running the Android 8.1 system. Previous leaks had suggested that the OPPO R15 duo would be fueled by Snapdragon 670 chipset, the successor of the Snapdragon 660 which powers the OPPO R11/R11 Plus and OPPO R11s/R11s Plus. However, a leakster from China has claimed that the MediaTek Helio P60 chipset that was unveiled recently would be powering the OPPO R15 and R15 Dream Mirror Edition.

Alleged Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S Leaked Photo Reveals New Design for Rear Panel

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S will be launching on March 27. Even though multiple leaks have revealed the specifications of the Mi MIX 2S, there is still no concrete information available on the design of the phone. Today, a leaked photo of the alleged smartphone has appeared on Weibo. The image shows the handset sitting beside the Mi MIX 2.

The leaked image only showcases the rear side of the phone. It reveals that the handset features a vertically stacked dual camera setup like the iPhone X. An LED flash can be seen sitting between the two camera sensors. Also, the back panel is equipped with a fingerprint sensor. Since it has a glossy appeal, it seems to be sporting a ceramic body like the Mi MIX 2.

A leaked image showing the frontside of the phone had appeared in the last week. It revealed that the front of the phone is mainly occupied by the display. It also suggested that the handset will be arriving with in-display fingerprint scanner. Another report has also claimed that Xiaomi is working on introducing the new fingerprint scanning technology. If the Mi MIX 2S is really arriving with it, it is likely that the new image showing its rear view could be belong to one of the design prototypes of the Mi MIX 2S.

None of the images of the Mi MIX 2S that have surfaced seem to be trustworthy.Since the launch event of the smartphone is three weeks ago, more leaks showing the actual device may appear in the near future.

Rumors have it that the Mi MIX 2S has a 6.01-inch OLED display and it is driven by Snapdragon 845 chipset and up to 8 GB of RAM. It may arrive with up to 256 GB storage. The Sony IMX363 lens could be one of the dual camera sensors. It is expected to arrive with 3,400mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy S9 And Galaxy S9+ Launched In India, Price Starts At Rs 57,900 ($891)

As expected, Samsung has today launched its two new smartphones in the Indian market — the Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ at a launch event in New Delhi. Both the phones were originally unveiled at Mobile World Congress 2018 in Barcelona.

While the devices have been launched in India today, Samsung India store had already opened pre-bookings for both — Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ right after the launch event in Barcelona. The devices were available for pre-booking for a price of Rs 2,000 (approximately $31).

One of the highlights for the Galaxy S9-series is that it comes with improved camera experience to take on the likes of Apple’s iPhone X and Google Pixel 2. DxOMark, which tests and rates smartphone cameras, has placed Samsung Galaxy S9+ as the best camera ahead of both its rivals.

Both phones bear resemblance with their predecessors in terms of design. However, there are some design changes like the repositioned fingerprint scanner that now sits below the rear camera, less rounded corners and slightly reduced bezels.

The screen of S9 and S9+ are curved towards the edges on the front and rear. Their aluminum frame that is flanked with curved Gorilla Glass panels on both sides. The devices come with IP68 certification that ensures that the phones are waterproof and dustproof.

The Samsung Galaxy S9 and the Galaxy S9+ features 5.8-inch and 6.2-inch Super AMOLED display, respectively which supports QHD+ resolution of 2960 x 1440 pixels. The company says that both phones come with a new kind of coating on the screen that delivers deeper blacks.

Both phones are powered by Samsung’s Exynos 9810 octa-core processor with Mali G72MP18 GPU. The Galaxy S9 packs 4GB RAM while the S9+ packs 6GB RAM. Both devices are available in two storage options — 64GB internal storage and 256GB onboard storage.

Coming to the camera specs, the Galaxy S9 features a 12-megapixel dual pixel rear camera with LED Flash, f/2.4-f/1.5 variable aperture, and 960fps super slo-mo support. On the other hand, the Galaxy S9+ comes with a 12-megapixel primary rear camera and 12-megapixel secondary camera along with f/2.4-f/1.5 variable aperture, LED Flash, and 960fps super slo-mo support. On the front, the devices feature 8-megapixel auto-focus camera with wide-angle lens and f/1.7 aperture.

The devices are running Android Oreo operating system out-of-the-box with TouchWiz custom interface on top. While the Galaxy S9 is powered by a 3,000mAh battery, the Galaxy S9+ is powered by a 3,500mAh battery. Apart from the fingerprint reader, both phones are also equipped with security features like improved KNOX and Intelligent Scan that combines Iris Scanner and face recognition.

Connectivity options on the device include 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac (2.4GHz/5GHz), VHT80 MU-MIMO, Bluetooth v5 (LE up to 2Mbps), GPS with GLONASS, USB 3.1, NFC and MST. The Galaxy S9 is powered by the 3,000mAh battery while the Galaxy S9+ is fuelled by a 3,500mAh battery and both devices come with wireless charging.

Pricing and Availability

In India, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ will be available in Midnight Black, Coral Blue, and Lilac Purple colors. As of the pricing, the 64GB ROM model of S9 costs Rs. 57,900 while the 256GB model is priced at Rs. 65,900. On the other hand, the 64GB model of S9+ is priced at Rs. 64,900 while the 256GB model costs Rs. 72,900.

While pre-bookings started last week on Samsung Shop, both the phones are now available for pre-order starting from 2 PM today on Flipkart. The company will start shipping the device from March 16th.

Through the firmware files of EMUI 8.1 (based on Android 8.1 Oreo), XDA Developers have unearthed numerous traces of HiAI Mobile Computing platform powered HiAssistant

Huawei handsets that are available in China are preloaded with HiVoice. It allows users to carry out basic functions like a making phone call through voice command. It is not as sophisticated as other voice assistants that are leading the market. However, the upcoming HiAssistant will be a powerful virtual assistant as it will come with Natural Language Understanding (NLU). It enables the smartphone to interpret unstructured sentences through human input.

The publication claims that the HiAssistant will be available in the home country and only those devices will be supporting that are powered by Kirin 970 chipset and EMUI 8.1. The international build the upcoming Huawei P20 and P20 Pro does not feature HiAssistant which confirms that Huawei will be making it available exclusively in China. Since there are several strings of HiAssistant in the leaked build, it appears that the virtual assistant will be given power to control almost every setting available on the device through voice.

Apart from controlling the device, HiAssistant also features a search option for food, emoticons, navigation routes, train tickets, videos and so on. It can also search through specific categories such as music albums, TV shows, books and more. HiAssistant will also make it possible to send payments to major banks in China.

HiVision that functions like Google Lens can recognize objects of different categories like food, animals, vehicles, appliances, tools and so on. It can also read barcodes and text. The HiAI Mobile Computing platform will make it possible for third-party apps to recognize scenes such as beaches, fireworks, flowers, dogs, cats and more.

The above features of the HiAssistant does show that it has the potential to rival with Google Assistant, Alex and Siri. As of this writing, there is no information available on whether HiAssistant will be coming on devices sold outside of China.

Vivo V9 Appears in Multiple Leaked Shots; Launch Could be Drawing Close

Vivo has recently launched the Vivo APEX flagship smartphone. The company is also prepping to launch the Vivo V9, a new mid-range phone in the market. It is expected to arrive as a successor for the Vivo V7. The Chinese manufacturer has already started teasing it as it was spotted on a billboard ad in the previous week. A couple of leaked photos showing the actual V9 handset have also appeared this week to reveal its front and rear design.

The front view of the Vivo V9 shows that its design is inspired from the iPhone X. However, it features a smaller notch compared to Apple’s phone. A smaller notch on the Vivo V9 will allow it to deliver higher screen-to-body ratio than the iPhone X.

The image showing the backside of the phone reveals that it has a vertically arranged dual camera setup on the top-left corner. The rear panel also features a fingerprint scanner which indicates that the mid-range phone won’t be arriving with under-display fingerprint reader. The handset seems to be sporting a metallic chassis.

There is no information available on the specifications of the phone. However, it has been revealed through its appearance on billboard that it will be arriving with a 24-megapixel selfie camera. It appears that the Vivo V9 will be retaining the same selfie camera that was made available on the predecessor. However, it may arrive with some sort of improvements. The Vivo V7 is fueled by Snapdragon 450 chipset. It is speculated that the Vivo V9 may include Snapdragon 660 chipset.

Apple Could Launch A Cheaper MacBook Air Later This Year – Report

Apple’s MacBook Air is one of its most popular offerings from the US-based company. However, the company hasn’t done much for its improvements in recent years. That is about to change soon.

According to the latest report from Apple analyst KGI Securities, Apple is planning to launch a new cheaper variant of the Apple MacBook Air in the second quarter of this year.

The primary reason for such move from the US-based tech giant seems to increase the sales volume of its computing device. According to KGI Securities, the new offering could help Apple to push MacBook shipments up by 10-15 percent this year.

Currently, the MacBook Air is being sold for a starting price of $999. The latest mode in the series was unveiled last summer and comes with a faster 1.8GHz Intel processor. While the line celebrates its tenth year in 2018, it has only received incremental updates so far.

Along with the 1.8GHz Intel i5 processor, the base model of the MacBook Air packs 8GB RAM, 128GB SSD, and Intel HD Graphics 6000. Unlike the 12-inch MacBook and the MacBook Pro models, the MacBook Air does not feature a Retina Display.

The report about the cheaper MacBook Air comes at a time when there were rumors suggesting that Apple will discontinue MacBook Air series in 2018 and will instead focus on the 12-inch MacBook series. But, its clear that there exists a market for MacBook Air, which is the most popular laptop in the market that runs macOS, maybe because it’s cheaper than the MacBook Pro and powerful than the 12-inch MacBook.

A report from TendForce claims that Apple has overtaken Asus in global laptop shipments, moving up from fifth to the fourth position. In the third quarter of 2017, the company shipped 4.43 million units of its laptops.

The report from KGI Securities further adds that the US-based tech giant is also likely to refresh its wireless earphones AirPods. Recently, Apple launched its smart speaker HomePod but it received lots of criticism. According to the report, the Apple HomePod has met with “mediocre” demand.

Meizu E3 Officially Launching on March 21, Confirms Meizu

Recent reports had claimed that Meizu would be launching the Meizu E3 smartphone today. However, instead of making it official, the company has confirmed that the Meizu E3 will be unveiled on March 21.

The Weibo post that confirms the March 21 launch states that the unveil event will be held at National Convention Center in Beijing at 21:30 PM local time. The post carries an image of the aircraft and a link to the documentary filmed called “The Rocking Sky” from 2015. Meizu has bought the copyright of the movie and it is allowing user to watch it for free starting from today until March 8.

Yesterday, the Meizu E3 was spotted in colors like Black, Blue and Gold in new renders. The M851M and M851Q variants of the handset had received certification from TENAA authority in China in February. Through the TENAA listing, it has been revealed that the Meizu E3 will be arriving with a 5.99-inch display that produces FHD+ resolution and aspect ratio of 18:9.

The Meizu E3 is powered by an octa-core processor that works at 1.8 GHz. Rumors have it that the unannounced MediaTek Helio P70 chipset may power the handset. The handset may arrive in RAM options of 4 GB and 6 GB. Also, it is pegged to come in multiple storage choices like 32 GB, 64 GB and 128 GB. It is expected to receive power from a 3,300mAh battery.

The E3 may feature a selfie camera of 8-megapixel whereas the back panel of the phone may house a dual camera setup featuring a 12-megapixel sensor and a 20-megapixel sensor. It will continue to sport side-mounted fingerprint reader and Super mBack pressure-sensitive button like the Meizu 6S that was unveiled recently.

Recent leaks have also shown that the handset will have “mblu by Meizu” branding. Some rumors have claimed that there could be gaming focused and photography-centric editions of Meizu E3. The handset could be priced between around 1,799 (~$284) and 1,999 Yuan (~$315).

Through the survey, Jaffray asked 1,500 iPhone users on why they are still using their existing iPhone and why they did not upgrade to the iPhone X. The survey revealed that 31 percent users did not upgrade because of the hefty pricing of the iPhone X. Apple has been selling the 64 GB and 256 GB versions of the iPhone X with respective pricing of $999 and $1049.

The survey also revealed that 44 percent did not feel like upgrading to iPhone X as their existing iPhone is working without any issue. Also, 17 percent users said that they did not upgrade to iPhone X due to another reason. The survey clearly reveals that the pricing is the major reason why people have not purchased the iPhone X.

This year Apple is expected to launch a budget-friendly iPhone. It is rumored to house a 6.1-inch LCD display, but it is unlikely to feature 3D Touch and it is pegged to come with a single camera on its rear panel. It is expected to borrow many features from the iPhone X such as TrueDepth Camera, Face ID and notch enabled full screen design. The other iPhone that is expected to debut alongside is likely to carry an expensive pricing. It is rumored to come with an OLED display of 6.5-inches.

Another low-cost iPhone that is expected to launch this year include the iPhone SE 2. The handset is expected to borrow several specs from the iPhone 7. It does seem that Apple will include True Depth Camera and Face ID on the successor for the iPhone SE. The iPhone SE 2 is rumored to debut at the Worldwide Developer Conference (WWDC) in June this year.

Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S Latest Teaser Points At Dual Cameras That Can Function Independently

Xiaomi is expected to go official with the much-anticipated Mi Mix 2s, its first flagship for the year on March 27. Ahead of that date, the tech giant in its usual fashion has been sending out a couple of teasers centered on the features of the smartphone. Just a couple of hours ago the tech giant teased the presence of an AI camera. The latest teaser is that of a dual camera setup but this isn’t just any dual camera. The teaser suggests the two camera sensors can function independently.

The Mi Mix 2s is expected to pack a Sony IMX 363 sensor at the main camera and some of the features of the camera had earlier leaked via the Mix 2S firmware files. The camera is said to come with the capability to identify various kinds of scenes such as doc (document), flower, food, sky, sunrise/sunset, cat, dog, green plants, night, snow, sea, autumn, candlelight, car, grass, maple leaves, succulent, building, city, cloud, overcast and backlight.

The Mi Mix 2S is confirmed by its AnTuTu listing to feature a Snapdragon 845 chip and this could be paired with 8GB of RAM. We expect more teasers from Xiaomi as the days roll by.

Xiaomi Phones To Land In The U.S. By The End of 2018 or Early 2019

Xiaomi‘s expansion continues. After joining the top 5 best smartphone brands in the world in 2017 and after entering the European market with some physical stores, the company seems to be ready to land in the US. During an annual conference which was held in Beijing, CEO Lei Jun declared that the Chinese giant may make its debut in the U.S. by the end of 2018 or at the beginning of 2019. The report comes from the Wall Street Journal and these are the exact words spoken by Lei Jun:

We’ve always been considering entering the U.S. market. We plan to start entering the market by end 2018, or by early 2019.

Xiaomi is already selling some products in the U.S. but smartphones are not included among them. At the moment, the company is only selling accessories and connected devices such as speakers, electronic scales, and cameras. But it will not be easy for Xiaomi to conquer the North American market. The U.S. customers are very demanding and the U.S. government is not exactly a fan of Chinese smartphone manufacturers. Among the reasons for this hostility, there are security risks such as data interception by Chinese authorities. Indeed, U.S. authorities such as CIA, FBI, and NSA have recently advised American people against purchasing Chinese handsets like Huawei and ZTE devices. According to the U.S. Intelligence, allowing Chinese companies like the above-mentioned ones enter the U.S. market in a consistent way may put the national security at risk.

Huawei’s answer to this statement was immediate: the world’s top Chinese smartphone brand said that governments and consumers in 170 countries trust Huawei and there is no more risk in using the company’s phones than the ones made by any other established manufacturer.

Meizu To Announce Something On March 6, Meizu E3 Launch Event Likely

After MWC 2018, where we saw a lot of new announcements from big manufacturers, Meizu is finally warming up for its own release. The company has confirmed via a teaser on its weibo page that it will announce something important tomorrow i.e. on March 6 at 10 am. While the company failed to give out any more details, it is said that Meizu will finally announce the conference for the rumored Meizu E3 smartphone. We have been hearing about this model for quite some time, and even today, we saw some detailed renders of the E3, and finally, we may get a release date tomorrow morning.

According to leaks and rumours, the Meizu E3 will be an all metal smartphone featuring dual cameras arranged vertically and an 18:9 5.99-inch 2160 x 1080p FHD+ display up front. Unlike other manufacturers, Meizu will be using a side mounted fingerprint sensor. We saw the same design on the Meizu M6S, so this won’t be a new design element. As for the CPU, the phone is said to sport a 1.8GHz octa-core processor with 6GB + 128GB storage option in its best variant.

At the back, there should be a 12+12MP dual camera setup, while up front, there’s an 8MP shooter. The battery is said to be of 3300mAh which isn’t big, but should be decent enough for an upper mid-range device. Other expected features include the Super mBack button up front. If you don’t remember this name, then note that this is the same Halo button seen on the Meizu M6S.

As you can see, quite a lot is already known about the E3. So, we just wait for a launch date to make these details official.
