Xiaomi to launch new product on November 6; Redmi Note 6 tipped to debut

Xiaomi has confirmed through the Weibo account of Xiaomi Mall that it will be live broadcasting the launch of a new product on Nov. 6. The Chinese manufacturer has not disclosed the name of the product that will be debuting in the coming week. Rumors have it that the company may launch the Redmi Note 6 smartphone.

The poster that has been released by Xiaomi Mall states that the new product will be unveiled at 2 PM (local time) in China on Nov. 6. The poster also carries “wonderful upgrade” tagline for the mysterious device. The Chinese manufacturer had announced the Redmi Note 6 Pro smartphone in Thailand at the end of September. It is speculated that the same phone could be heading to China with the name of Redmi Note 6.

One of the leaked promotional images of the Redmi Note 6 that has been spotted on Weibo states that it is equipped with four cameras and AI portrait blur feature. It also reveals the phone features 20-megapixel + 2-megapixel dual selfie camera module. The handset may arrive with 999 Yuan pricing and it could be aimed towards the upcoming Nov. 11 Singles Day sales in China.

The entire specifications of the Redmi Note 6 have been revealed through its Thailand launch. The Note 6 is equipped with a 6.26-inch IPS LCD notched screen that offers 19:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution. The Snapdragon 636 mobile platform and 4,000mAh battery that powers the Redmi Note 5 are also present inside the successor phone.

The Redmi Note 6 has 12-megapixel + 5-megapixel dual camera setup on its rear. It comes with MIUI flavored Android 8.1 Oreo OS. The smartphone may arrive in variants such as 3 GB RAM + 32 GB storage and 4 GB / 6 GB RAM + 64 GB storage in the home market. The color options of the smartphone include Black, Blue, Rose Gold and Red.

The foldable smartphone that has long been anticipated was finally released but with some bit of surprise. We had expected either Samsung or LG or even Huawei to be the first to release a model. The Microsoft Surface tablet was also tipped to be among the early birds but that wasn’t the case. Instead, a relatively unknown Chinese OEM named Royole Technology became the first company to launch a true foldable phone – the Royole Flexpai.

The device was announced in a ceremony in China a few days ago and just yesterday more details of the specifications were revealed. A hands-on video of the Flexpai foldable phone has now appeared online, giving us a clear view of the device. The video also shows the device in action both in the tablet mode and when folded. However, we must point out that the design looks quite rough, and may still receive some fine tuning before the final release. There is no doubt that this is still a concept that may take a while before going commercial. For one, Qualcomm is yet to officially announce the Snapdragon 8150 chipset and that may not find is way into smartphones until next year. However, it is an impressive design that we hope will speed up the release of more foldable hones just the same way the Mi Mix gave birth to the full-screen phone design trend.

As a reminder, the Royole FlexPai sports a 7.8-inch AMOLED screen with a 1920 x 1440 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. The device is powered by Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 800 series processor which is clocked at 2.8GHz while an Adreno 640 GPU powers the graphics.

The foldable phone will come in 8GB RAM + 256GB storage, 6GB RAM +128GB storage and 8GB RAM + 512GB storage versions. It also packs a 16MP + 20MP dual camera set up at the rear with a f/1.8 aperture size and optical image stabilization. The device packs a 3,800mAh battery with support for 5V/5A fast charging via their proprietary Ro-Charge technology. It also has support for dual SIM (nano only), storage expansion (256GB max), Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, and Wi-Fi. Supported LTE bands are 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 12, 34, 38, 39, 40, and 41. There is a USB-C port for charging and audio. There’s no word yet on its release.

Samsung Galaxy S10 may offer higher screen space by killing iris scanner

Samsung had introduced iris scanner feature on the ill-fated Galaxy Note 7 smartphone in 2016. Since then, the South Korean has been offering the feature on its Galaxy S and Note series of flagship phones. Fresh report reveals that the company may axe the feature on the upcoming Galaxy S10 in a bid to offer higher screen-to-body ratio.

Samsung is rumored to introduced three variants of Galaxy S10 in early 2019. Fresh information coming from South Korea reveals that the company has reportedly decided to axe the iris scanner from all the three variants of the Galaxy S10 phone.

The Galaxy A7 (2018) that was announced recently is equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint scanner. It is speculated that the most affordable edition of the Galaxy S10 may come with the same kind of biometric recognition feature. Contradicting rumors suggest that it could be equipped with an optical under-display fingerprint reader. The other two advanced models of the Galaxy S10 are expected to feature ultrasonic in-display fingerprint sensor supplied by Qualcomm.

Even though numerous smartphone OEMs have launched phones with notched screens, Samsung has remained on its notch-less 18.5:9 Infinity Display design for its smartphones. The Galaxy S10 variants may feature in-display front-facing camera that will allow them to offer higher screen space. A recent report had revealed that the Galaxy S10+ may offer a screen-to-body ratio of 93.4 percent. Samsung is also rumored to axe 3.5mm audio jack feature from the Galaxy S10 series.

In related news, Samsung has recently announced GM1 48-megapixel sensor and GD1-32-megapixel sensor. The mass production of the new camera sensor will begin by the end of this year. Hence, it is being speculated that these sensors may end up on the Galaxy S10 series arriving next year. At least one of the three S10 variants is expected to feature a triple camera unit.

Huawei Mate 20 Pro update brings AI features for video recording and few other changes

The update is now rolling out in the UK and South Africa and weighs over at 491 MB. It will update the EMUI version to 9.0.0.126 with some final time changes. After a debut update on OnePlus 6T, the Chinese manufacturer is rolling out OxygenOS 9.0.2 update on OnePlus 6. The new update carries almost every feature that the device manufacturer has promised at OnePlus 6T launch. It has brought in many new changes and improvements along with some new features.

Vivo V9 Pro 4GB RAM variant is now available for purchase in India

As expected, Vivo has today launched the 4GB RAM variant of its Vivo V9 Pro smartphone in the Indian market. Earlier, the phone was launched in India in only one variant with 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage. While the 6GB RAM model was Amazon-exclusive in India, the 4GB RAM model will be available from Flipkart.

Report: Global smartphone sales fell by 3%, Xiaomi and Huawei still on ascent in Q3 2018

In a new report from Counterpoint, it is found that Global smartphone sales have fallen for the first time up to 3% in the Q3 2018. The global shipments of the smartphones have reduced to 386.8 million units. After growing by an average of 16% from the past five years, the smartphone market is witnessing a slowdown with 1% overall decline this year.

Many reasons can be cited as the root cause of the slowdown. Few of them are the slowing global economy, rising trade tariffs, rising price of phones, etc. Despite Xiaomi and Huawei, all other big brands such as Samsung, Apple, LG and others have witnessed a decline in sales.

“Many markets have already hit a saturation point for new smartphone demand and are dependent on replacement demand,” Counterpoint research director Tom Kang wrote in the report. “Buying a more expensive device results in extending the length of replacement cycles, especially when your earnings are limited.”

In total, Samsung shipped 72.3 million smartphones and ranked first, but it has declined 13% on the basis of year-on-year stats. Apple has maintained a steady increase of 0.1% in the total tally. Huawei, Xiaomi and HMD have witnessed considerable growth. Notably, Huawei shipments rose to 52 million units by 33% on the year-on-year basis. Xiaomi garnered 35.7 million sales with an increase of 25% on a YoY basis.

HMD global aka Nokia has increased its shipments volume by 71%. On the other hand, Motorola and LG both have witnessed a double-digit dip this year. Apple remained steady and sold 170.8 million iPhones which are half a per cent more than the last year.

Some brands are doing well in the international market rather than the domestic. In the same group, Xiaomi has registered a growth of 83% in the international market while it hit 16% in the domestic market.

We can say it’s a mixed bag of ups and downs with overall sales fell by 3% this quarter.

In the world’s first teardown by ZOL, it is revealed that the internal fitting of all the elements is complex but is not hard to disassemble it with the right tools. There are many other surprises such as the first look at Kirin 980 working on any device’s motherboard.

The color of the packaging for the Tribit XBoom Speaker is orange and white that looks straightforward. There are a speaker, a traditional USB charging cable and a user manual. Taking the items out of the package should be careful, because the charging cable is inconspicuous that it may be discarded with the packaging box. Tribit XBoom is fueled by 5200mAh battery. Its music play time is up to 20 hours and charging time is about four hours with 5V/2A. It is standard features of the Bluetooth speakers.

With the cylindrical design, there are three operation buttons on the front of the speaker, and it looks special and lovely. The first button from top to bottom is to increase the volume, and the third button is to decrease the volume. Press the middle button once, the round button, to play and pause, twice to skip the song and three times to back to the last song. On the front side, it has a small Tribit logo. It has a vertical bar made from silicone material on the back side, accommodating some critical hardwares. The top is the power button, lighting up when the speaker is on. Following are four tiny indicators to show the battery status. Below are the Bluetooth switch and XBASS button. After the Bluetooth button lighting up, you can connect your device to the Tribit XBoom Speaker and enjoy the music without headsets. Turning on the XBASS button will boost the thumps. Next is the silicone flap covering aux-in port, however, it is a little bit hard to open the flap. There is a silicone material strap on the top of the speaker attached by a screw post.

It is good that the speaker’s sound quality is better than some of the goods that cost more than it. This $70 speaker is not disappointed. We use it to play lyric song and dynamic dance song to make a test. The performance of playing lyric song is not bad that the speaker actually makes me feel like I was in the song’s scene, while some slight noise is produced in the higher pitched. For the dynamic dance song, the thumps are boosted after turning on the XBASS mode. Though it is too stimulating for me, people who like the thumps will like the speaker which performance is amazing.

On Tuesday, October 30th, ZTE introduced its latest flagship dubbed the Nubia X to its popular Nubia brand in China. While the phone’s biggest USP (unique selling point) is its dual displays, the rest of its specifications are nothing short of awe-inspiring either.
The Nubia X smartphone’s dual touchscreen comprises a mammoth 6.26-inch notch-less FHD+ front display and a 5.1 inches OLED HD+ rear screen, both bearing an aspect ratio of 19:9. AnTuTu’s top 10 best performance Android phones for October is led by Kirin 980 fueled Mate 20 series

Since the past few months, AnTuTu’s list of top 10 best performance Android phones have been led by Snapdragon 845 powered smartphones. The list for the September month was completely populated by SD845 phones. Today, the benchmarking platform has released the list of top 10 best performance Android phones for October month. The top three positions on the list have been taken over by Kirin 980 chipset powered Mate 20, Mate 20 Pro and Mate 20 X smartphones.

As it can be seen in the below image, the first position is held by Huawei Mate 20 phone that has recorded 311,840 average benchmarking score. The second position goes to Mate 20 Pro that has raked in 307,693 points. The Mate 20 X is sitting on the third position with a score of 303,112.

Another new phone that has appeared on AnTuTu’s list is the all new Xiaomi Black Shark Helo phone that has reached 301,757 mark on the benchmarking platform. The original Xiaomi Black Shark phone is sitting on the fifth position with 293,544 benchmarking score.

The Meizu 16th smartphone that was announced in August is on the sixth spot with a score of 293,554. The seventh position goes to OnePlus 6 that has salvaged a benchmarking score of 292,371. The ASUS ROG Phone (291,701) Smartisan R1 (291,102) and Nubia Z18 (290,332) are the remaining phones that are present on the list of top 10 best performance Android smartphones for October.

AnTuTu has stated that the aforementioned points for each smartphone are not the highest benchmarking score, but an average of their scores. Smartphones such as Xiaomi Mi MIX 3, OnePlus 6T and Honor Magic 2 that were announced at the end of the previous month haven’t made it the October list by AnTuTu. These phones are expected to rank well in AnTuTu’s top 10 best performance Android smartphones list in November that will be released in the coming. As far as October’s benchmarking scores are concentered, the new list is a clear evidence that the Kirin 980 powered phones have outperformed SD845 driven smartphones.

Huawei P20/P20 Pro, Mate RS, Mate 10/Pro and more to get EMUI 9.0 on November 10

Huawei and its Honor sub-brand have been gradually rolling out EMUI 9.0 to their devices. A few days ago, it announced that the update will bring GPU Turbo 2.0 to three of its Honor flagship phones. Today it announced that the update is now open to 9 more devices.

Apparently, the update is still in beta but now open to the general public instead of just a limited few as announced a few weeks ago. So if you own the Huawei P20, P20 Pro, Mate RS Porsche Design, Mate 10, Mate 10 Pro, Mate 10 Porsche Design, Honor 10, Honor V10, and Honor Play, you can install the EMUI 9.0 beta update as from November 10.

To get the update, all you have to do is open the Huawei Mobile Services app, select services and proceed to select “beta upgrade” (loose translation). The update should then be pushed to your device.

Chinese manufacturer Rouyu (Royole) Technologies has claimed the title of the first manufacturer to release a foldable phone with a flexible display. The phone which is called the FlexPai was unveiled at an event yesterday.

We didn’t get the full specifications of the device yesterday. Thankfully, an official page for the device is now up on the manufacturer’s website and it has the full specifications and some other details.

The FlexPai has a display that measures 7.8-inches diagonally. It is an AMOLED panel with a 1920 x 1440 resolution and a 4:3 aspect ratio. Powering the device is Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 800 series processor which is clocked at 2.8GHz.

I guess they are trying not to explicitly call it the Snapdragon 855 or the Snapdragon 8150 until Qualcomm officially announces the chipset. Thanks to the FlexPai’s spec sheet, we know the processor will have an Adreno 640 GPU.

The spec page says the processor is paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. However, we know from yesterday’s launch that there is also a 6GB RAM + 128GB version and an 8GB RAM + 512GB version.

The FlexPai has a 16MP + 20MP camera with a f/1.8 aperture size. The page doesn’t specify if that’s the aperture for both sensors or just the primary one. Although it does mention that there is optical image stabilization.

The device packs a 3,800mAh battery with support for 5V/5A fast charging via their proprietary Ro-Charge technology. It also has support for dual SIM (nano only), storage expansion (256GB max), Bluetooth 5.1, GPS, and Wi-Fi. Supported LTE bands are 1, 3, 4, 7, 8, 12, 34, 38, 39, 40, and 41. There is a USB-C port for charging and audio.

The FlexPai weighs 320g and measures 134 x 190.35 x 7.6 mm. Royole says the phone will ship with the 5V/5A fast-charging adapter, a pair of USB_C headphones, a USB Type-C cable, a Type-C to 3.5mm cable, and a carrying case.

Samsung announces record profit for Q3 2018 despite a decline in smartphone sales YoY

South Korea tech giant Samsung has announced its quarterly financial report for the third quarter of the year. The company posted revenue from sales reaching KRW65.46 trillion ($57.3 billion) and operating profit peaking at KRW17.57 trillion ($15.4 billion) which are improvements over the company’s record in the same period last year.

The breakdown of the financial record shows the IT & Mobile Division which is responsible for the Galaxy smartphones, recorded a 10% YoY decline in sales to KRW24.91 trillion ($2.2 billion) compared with KRW27.69 trillion ($2.4 billion) in Q3 2017. This is despite recording a “solid flagship sales.” No doubt Samsung’s faltering sales in the mid-range/budget segments would have contributed largely to the decline.

On the other hand, the semiconductor business brought Samsung to a new quarterly high, backed by strong sales of memory chips, as well as demand for server and mobile memory. Despite the record, the company projects that its cash flow will likely decrease in the fourth quarter due to the end of a two-year boom in memory chips demand and an increase in competitive products from rivals.

The Korean giant also announced its plans for 2019 with a shift of focus to strengthening its competitiveness in emerging technologies like 5G, AI, and automotive electronics. This is in order to offset the reduction in sales and operating profit. The company also plans to expand its online sales and B2B relationship with built-in appliances and system air conditioners.
