Smartphones are no longer luxuries but everyday necessities for the common people in South Africa, nay Africa and one factor that plays a may role in determining which brand to go for is the price. Since price plays a big role, there has been a steady in-flow of substandard devices which lets users accept sub-standard devices. This situation is now set to change as Chinese phone maker Cubot collaborates with one of the largest retailer in South Africa, Arbalest. they were expecting for trendy smart phones with reasonable price.
The partnership makes Arbalest the exclusive importer of Cubot phones in the country and perhaps the region. Although Cubot phones are well known in ither regions like the EU, South America, Soudi Arabia, Russia and even Kenya, this is the first time the company is making an officil entry into the Africa market and South Africa. With this agreement, Arbalest has the right to bring the most favourable and trendy phones with different sizes ranging from 5 inches to 5.5 inches and with 13MP rear camera and selfie shooters ranging from 5MP to 8MP. The first batch of smartphones that would be landing South Africa will include Cubot Rainbow 2, Cubot Echo and Cubot Cheetah 2.
The Cubot Rainbow 2 is the company’s most popular smartphone is 2016 and its biggest feature was the ability of the camera to take clear photos with high resolution. The storages on all the models are also pretty good, with the smallest being 16GB and the biggest 32GB. All models will come with expandable storage to 128 or 256GB through SD cards.
Apart from the decent hardware, the Cubot models will also come with premium design and the prices would be their srongest selling point. The recommended prices would range from R1,599 ($119) to R3,499 ($261). In essence, Cubot’s entry into South Africa will be with budget phones but together with Arbalest, the Chinese company will further introduce mid-range models in the market and thus, gain acceptance from more customers.

Before the official announcement of OnePlus 5, OnePlus had already confirmed that the company is working with DxOLabs (well-known for benchmarking performance of various cameras) to improve the photography experience on the OnePlus 5. DxOLabs has done a review on the dual rear cameras of the OnePlus 5 and has awarded it a DxOMark score of 87.
The dual camera system present on the rear panel of the OnePlus includes a f/1.7 aperture 16-megapixel sensor and a f/2.6 aperture 20-megapixel sensor. Both the sensors work together to deliver 1.6x optical zoom which is advertised lossless digital zoom by the Chinese firm. These cameras can also shoot images with bokeh effect by focusing on the subject and blurring the background.
By testing the 16-megapixel sensor in default mode, OnePlus 5 managed to salvage a DxOMark score of 87 points which is an impressive score. How does it fare with its rival smartphones? According to DxOMark benchmarks, OnePlus 5’s camera prowess is on par with smartphones like Huawei P10, Moto Z Force Droid, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge+, Sony Xperia XZ and Xperia Z5. Smartphones that have scored 88 points on DxOMark benchmarks are HTC 10, Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S7 Edge, and Sony Xperia X Performance. The Google Pixel has scored 89 points on DxoMark and the HTC U11 is leading the chart with 90 DxOMark points.
DxOLabs has revealed that the while shooting still images, OnePlus 5 can capture accurate white balance with rich details and fast and smooth autofocus. It can shoot impressive outdoor photos with precise color rendering and pleasant hues along with good noise reduction and detail preservation. There is some ghosting effect in outdoor photos.
When it comes to indoor photo shooting, its rear cameras are good at detail preservation when it is held on a tripod. However, there is some blurriness and loss of detail in photos shot by holding the phone by hand. White balance is accurate in dim light conditions with good color rendering like outdoors, but it struggles to capture very fine details.
OnePlus 5 can shoot 4K and 2K videos at 30 fps and full HD videos at 60 fps and 30 fps. It can shoot HD videos at 30 fps and 120 fps. Around two months, when Apple had said that it won’t be paying royalties of $1 billion to Qualcomm until the issue between them is resolved, Qualcomm demanded the ban on manufacturing of iPhones in the U.S. and Asia. Today, Qualcomm has officially registered a complaint with the International Trade Commission (ITC) and Federal Court in the U.S. to import the ban of some iPhones claiming that Apple is unfairly using its technology.
According to the complaint filed by Qualcomm with ITC, iPhones that are manufactured in China should not be imported to the U.S. if they are infringing the patents of Qualcomm. The case filed with US District Court for Southern California seeks damages for patent infringement.
The U.S. based chip maker has accused of Apple of infringing six of its technological patents that belong to some of the important features of iPhones. Qualcomm claims that Apple is continuously using these patents without paying for them. As of this writing, there is no information on which iPhones are infringing Qualcomm’s patents. Hence, the chipset making company is gunning to various operations of Apple such as selling, advertising, importing, warehousing of the iPhone.
The six patents that Apple is said to be violating are related to optimized performance of battery, prolonging battery life while sending live video by creating data super-highway, network management and system performance. All the six patents were issued in the last four years. The images in this post are from Qualcomm which gives a breakdown of all the six patents along with details on each one of them that are being violated by Apple iPhones.
In April, Apple had filed a legal complaint against Qualcomm for unfairly charging patent licensing fees. The complaint stated that the U.S. chip maker is asking the Cupertino company to pay five times more money than it is collectively paying to cellular patent licensors. Apple has also said that the illegal business practices of Qualcomm are not negatively impacting it but also the entire industry. According to Apple, Qualcomm is only supplying it with a single connectivity component that does not belong to any of the innovations of Apple that it uses on its iPhones and still it is demanding a percentage of the collective cost of its products. At the same time, Qualcomm has also said that Apple is spreading false and misleading information to antitrust agencies in a bid to decrease the royalty amount that it is to pay to Qualcomm.
Lenovo has begun sending out press invites to its upcoming Moto launch event which it dubbed #HelloMotoWorld. The poster spotted shows the event will be held on July 25 in New York City, United States. The conference is expected to herald the birth of a couple of Moto smartphones and accessories.
One of the smartphones expected to be unveiled on that day is the Moto Z2 Force which has been the subject of several leaks. The Z2 Force is the next generation model of the Moto Z Force which was released last year. The Moto Z2 Force is actually bigger than last year’s model with a dimension of 156.32 x 76.36 mm as against the Z Force’s 155.9 x 75.8 mm. However, the Z2 Force is thinner at 5.9mm (8.50m adding the camera bump). The Moto Z2 Force is expected to come with a 5.5-inch 2K display, a Snapdragon 835 processor and probably a more compact battery due to the thinner size.
Also, a new Moto X4 was leaked by popular Twitter tipster Evan Bass (@evleaks) and could also be among the models that would be unveiled on July 25. Not much is known about the Moto X4 but the device is expected ill feature an aluminum body, dual rear cameras, and IP68 water resistance. The X4 will also come with a Snapdragon 630 chip backed by 4GB RAM and 64GB of native storage.
If you follow tech YouTubers you may have seen Unbox Therapy’s video of a really cool floating speaker last year. Well the company behind that crazy piece of gadgetry is back with a new set of truly wireless earphones that looks and sounds amazing. In fact, it sounds better than Apple’s AirPods.
Right out of the box the Air by Crazybaby feels and looks premium. The aluminum charging case feels very sturdy yet not heavy. Pop open the tray and the Air earphones present themselves in its full glory. Pairing with my smartphone took 30 seconds, and after that, the Air connects automatically every time thanks to the Bluetooth 4.2 technology. This is very important, as the Bragi Dash and Erato Apollo both suffered from dropped connections.
Crazybaby spent a year designing the Air, and it shows. The earphones fit very comfortably in the ear, and despite running and jumping, it never came close to falling out of my ear. If your ears are shaped differently, don’t worry — Crazybaby includes different sleeves for the Air, so it should fit everyone fine. This is the first wireless earphones to use carbon nanotube technology which explains why the Air feels so lightweight yet sturdy.
Crazybaby developed the Air with world-class acoustic labs and audio
engineers, and the result is immediately noticeable. The 5.2mm speaker driver stored inside pumped out super rich bass. In fact, this may be the best bass I’ve ever heard on an equipment this small. The highs and mids are crisp and clear too. Whether it was Beatles, K-Pop, or classical music, the Air pumped out uncanny sound that surpasses any other wireless earphones — Apple’s AirPod included. I think this has to do with the professional grade CSR chip that Crazybaby built into the Air.
Because of the Bluetooth 4.2 technology, the Air manage to stay connected to my iPhone during multiple listening sessions, both indoors and outdoors. Indoors, I can walk up to 20 feet away from the device before connection would break. There’s a microphone packed inside the Air with noise-isolation technology, and during test calls, the voice on the other end sounded loud and clear. I was told on the other end they could hear me fine too.
Battery life is also very good on the Air. A fully charged Air can play hi-fi music for four hours, and the charging case can add an additional two full charges.
Additionally, Crazybaby has developed its own app so you can customize the EQ on the fly. Overall, the Air by Crazybaby high quality and futuristic piece of equipment.

The device is also expected to feature a 5.46-inch JDI Incell screen with 1080pixels resolution.
We are not so sure about this latest leak so as is usually done in such cases, take this with a pinch of salt until Xiaomi goes official with the models.
Vivo finally unveiled the Vivo X9s and Vivo X9s Plus smartphones last night. Although both phones fit into the mid-range category, Vivo makes them stand out with their build quality and dual front facing cameras.
Vivo, like its sister company OPPO, focuses on the camera prowess of its phones and in the case of the X9s and X9s Plus it is the front cameras that get the attention.
The Vivo X9s and X9s Plus front cameras are a combination of a 20MP sensor and a 5MP sensor. Both are fixed focus and work together to shoot amazing photographs. Unfortunately, we don’t know the particular sensors used and Vivo didn’t mention them on the product page.
When you take a picture, the 20MP camera is what actually captures the image. The 5MP camera on the other hand adds the depth of field effect resulting in portrait mode images similar to what you will obtain on a DSLR.
Vivo has provided some photo samples showing the cameras in action. The color reproduction is impressive and the bokeh effect isn’t overdone. However, we will have to test it out to see if we can achieve the same result.
Vivo has finally taken the wraps off the X9S and X9S Plus smartphones that have been making the rounds on the internet for the past few days. The Vivo X9S comes with a smaller display size and a thin body which is just 6.99mm thick while the Plus-size Vivo X9S Plus features a larger display and a slightly thicker build coming in at 7.25 mm.
Both models are slight modifications of the X9 and X9Plus which made their debut last year and they still retain as their main highlight the dual selfie camera setup which we first saw on the X9 and X9 Plus. Seems the X9S and X9S Plus features the same design language as their predecessors except for the thinner body build.
Specs wise, the Vivo X9S packs a 5.5-inch display with Full HD resolution and keeping things coordinated is a Snapdragon 652 chip backed by 4GB of RAM and there is 64GB of storage onboard. The device comes with a new AK4376 audio chip which is less power hungry and won’t over task the 3200mAh battery crammed under the hood.
The Vivo X9S Plus, on the other hand, features a 5.85-inch display and is powered by a Snapdragon 653 chip. But the X9S Plus uses a 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage. The battery capacity is also ramped up to 4,015mAh. Both models run Vivo’s FunTouch OS 3.1 based on Android 7.1 and equally pack a 16MP + 5MP front camera as well as 16MP rear sensor apiece with optical image stabilization.
Both the Vivo X9S and X9S Plus will be available in Gold, Rose gold, and Matte black and as for their prices, the X9S’ price is pegged at 2698 Yuan (∼$397) while the X9S Plus will be sold for 2998 Yuan (∼$441). Meanwhile check out more unboxing/ hands on photos from below.
Vivo, the number three smartphone maker in China has unveiled the Vivo X9S and Vivo X9S Plus at an event in Beijing. The new smartphones will succeed the Vivo X9 and X9 Plus released in Q4 2016.
Vivo X9S and X9S Plus Design: All About The Figures
Vivo says it has switched to a new design for the new phones but promotional images show they still look like their predecessors. One thing they have been able to achieve is making the phones thinner and fitting in slightly larger batteries.
The Vivo X9S is 6.99mm thin while the X9S Plus is 7.25mm thin. Compare that to the X9 which is 7.0mm thin and the X9 Plus that is 7.5mm thin and you will realize that Vivo is playing a game of numbers.
The U-design antenna lines are still present and the rear cameras are still positioned exactly the same way.
Vivo X9S Specs
The Vivo X9S has a 5.5-inch Full HD display. There is 4GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a Snapdragon 652 under the hood. Vivo includes an AK4376 audio chip for Hi-Fi audio and manages to keep the audio jack even with the thinner body. This new audio chip consumes less power.
Where Vivo deserves a pat on the back is in the battery capacity. Even after cutting down the thickness by 0.01 mm, they were able to include a bigger 3320mAh battery under the aluminium body.
Vivo X9S Plus Specs
The X9S Plus comes with a 5.85” display but surprisingly ditches the 6GB of RAM from the X9 Plus for 4GB. Storage is still 64GB and there is Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 653 mobile platform to power it.
The X9S Plus gets an ES9318 Hi-Fi audio chip and a slightly larger 4015mAh battery.
Both phones run Vivo’s FunTouch OS 3.1 based on Android 7.1.
Vivo X9S and X9S Plus Cameras
Like the X9 and X9 Plus, the highlight of the Vivo X9S and X9S Plus are the front facing cameras. Both devices pack dual front facing cameras like their predecessors.
There is a 20MP sensor up front paired with another 5MP sensor for providing the portrait mode effect when you take selfies. Software upgrade for the front camera is Beauty 3.5.
The main camera is a 16MP sensor with image stabilization. Vivo says the camera has a dedicated DSP image optimization chip and you can shoot in RAW format.
Bluetooth audio receivers have been available for a while. Connect them to your analog device and you can begin to stream your audio files. Xiaomi announced its own bluetooth audio receiver today for a ¥99 (~$15).
We should have seen this coming seeing as they removed the audio jack on their new flagship, the Mi 6. Although the Mi 6 ships with a USB-C to 3.5mm audio adapter and there is a new Xiaomi Type-C earphones which costs 299 Yuan (~$43), the new bluetooth audio adapter is a cheaper and more convenient alternative for those who have invested in a number of 3.5mm headphones.
Xiaomi says the bluetooth audio receiver support Bluetooth 4.2 and comes with a 97mAh battery. The battery should last between 4 to 5 hours on a single charge and can be recharged via a micro USB port t the bottom.
In case you don’t know, the OUKITEL K6000 Plus has got a massive 6080mAh battery with 12V/2A charger which is supposed to be fast and furious. One the other hand, iPhone 7 Plus has got a 2900mAh battery with 5V/1A charger. That means the battery size of the K6000 Plus and charger are twice those of the iPhone 7 Plus. When the battery capacity and charger output are about twice of another one, how about the charging speed?
The test shows that even though the iPhone 7 Plus battery is only 2900mAh, it took more than 3 hours to achieve a full charge. On the other hand, the Oukitel K6000 Plus only took just 84 minutes to get its 6080mAh battery fully charged. In essence, if we are to use the iPhone 7 Plus’ 5V/1A charger to charge the K6000 Plus battery, it would take more than 6 hours to fully charge the huge battery. A report published around six months ago revealed that HTC would be releasing only 6 to 7 smartphones this year. In this year, it has already released the HTC U Ultra, HTC U Play, HTC X10 and HTC U11 flagship phone. It seems that the Taiwanese company will be releasing 2 to 3 smartphones in the remaining half of this year. On Weibo, couple of leaked photos of a new HTC flagship featuring bezeless display have surfaced.
As of this writing, there is no way to confirm whether these images are real or fake. As it can be seen in the images, the mysterious HTC flagship seems to be featuring a borderless display with no bezels on its right and left sides. The top bezel features have an OCEAN logo and is thick enough to house dual front cameras.
The dialer app and other Google apps can be seen at the upper part of the screen. The smartphone has rounded corners and its rear seems to feature a pair of vertically arranged cameras along with dual-LED flash. There is no information available on the specifications of this mysterious phone. Since this mysterious phone is packed with some impressive features, there is a possibility that it would be equipped with a pressure sensitive Edge Sense technology enabled frame.
There is a possibility that these images could belong to the rumored HTC Ocean Life phone. The probable reason behind it is that the Ocean Life smartphone is speculated to come with 16-megapixel dual cameras at the front and rear. It is speculated to feature a 5.2-inch display that will produce full HD resolution of 1,920 x 1,080 pixels. It is speculated to launch as the first Snapdragon 660 chipset smartphone from HTC.
It will be borrowing some features from the HTC U11 flagship phone such as Edge Sense pressure sensitive frame and USonic audio capabilities. It will be running on Android 7.1.1 Nougat OS and Sense 9.0 UI. Other features of the HTC Ocean Life include Bluetooth v5.0 and 2,600mAh battery.
