As we continue our rubric of the cheapest way to buy smartphones, next in our lineup is the CUBOT ZORRO 001. Indeed, it is not very well-known Chinese manufacturer, but it is quite an interesting offering for a budget-friendly category of devices.

Redmi 1S gets another unofficial MIUI 6.0 ROM

Xiaomi’s to be announced flagship will most likely run on the latest MIUI 6.0 version or even a newer version of the OS. There are a lot of other Xiaomi smartphones too that have received the update, but the Redmi 1S is still running the old version. Those who didn’t have the patience to wait for a few more months probably downloaded and installed the one ROM based on the MIUI 6.0 that was available for the device. However, most still haven’t taken the plunge, probably because the said ROM was far from perfect and many of the features of the device didn’t work properly.

Today, there’s a new ROM based on the new Xiaomi MIUI version that claims to bring the latest version to the old Redmi 1S with far less bugs and more stability. This new ROM (link given at the end) fixes a lot of bugs and is at present the best available MIUI 6.0 OS for Redmi 1S on the internet. But, even this is not perfect. It comes with its own set of bugs, for example the alarm clock does not work and even the Xiaomi Assistant is non-functional. But those who don’t mind them can check out the ROM from the link given below.

And for those who don’t want to take the risk, better wait for a few more months. It is said that Xiaomi will release the official MIUI 6.0 based update for Redmi 1S sometime around March, which will be fully functional. The Alleged iPad Pro Chassis Leaks Out

Apple has been on the rumour mill for quite some time regarding the upcoming iPad Pro, which is said to be a bigger than a regular iPad in size and have a screen size of about 12-12.9 inches. If you take a look at the picture, you may see the alleged chassis of the new iPad, which indeed looks bigger than ever and as usual, it will be made of aluminium alloy. Some previous rumours suggest that it will be 305.31mm x 220.8mm x 7mm or 12 x 8.7 x 0.28 inches in size.

There is not much information available just now, but so far the speculated specs include higher than Retina resolution display (at least 2732 x 2048) on the regular iPads and the faster processor (most likely A8X chip).

According to a Geekbench 3 multi-core benchmark, the A8X processor in the iPad Air 2 is up to 55 percent faster than the A8 processor in the iPhone 6 and 6 Plus.

What is more, since it is a Pro version of the device, it is expected to boast at least 2 GB of Ram. When all know how the iPad performs with only 1 GB of Ram, so the Pro version should be a real beast. As far as connectivity goes, we should see a standard package, which may include Bluetooth 4.0, 802.11ac Wi-Fi, lightning charging port and more.

Another expected features include the Touch ID to further support Apple’s security and payment systems. In addition, the tablet should be not more than 7mm thick to chase down the “thinnest and lightest” amplua.

In addition to this, the new iPad Pro is expected to come in classic Apple colours, which include White/Silver, White/Gold, Black/Space Gray.

Coolpad has announced a new flagship device in the market called as the Coolpad Dazen X7. The size and the features of the phone put it in direct competition with the Meizu MX4. The company has focused on the built quality as well as the camera on the new flagship.

The Dazen X7 comes with a unique double sided glass and aluminum frame design. Although the phone features a tradition form factor, the intricate details gives it a premium look. Both the front and the back is protected by Corning’s gorilla glass 3. The company claims that it derived inspiration from the Louvre Glass Pyramids in Paris for the phone’s design. As a result, the overall design stands out from the crowd. The phone is quite compact and thin too. It measures just 6.45mm in thickness which makes it even thinner than the new iPhone 6.

As for the tech specs, the Coolpad Dazen X7 features a 5.2-inch Super AMOLED display with 1080p resolution. While the screen size is almost the same as the Meizu MX4, the resolution on this device is much lower. The X7 is powered by the MT6595 octa-core Mediatek processor clocked at 2.3GHz. There will also be a Snapdragon 801 powered variant, for those who prefer Qualcomm’s chipset. The processor is mated with 3GB onboard RAM and 16GB internal memory.

A Good Comeback by Nokia? Nokia N1 Tablet Review

Nokia has been known for many years as one of the top phones manufacturers in the world. In fact, we are sure to say that it was the king of phones before the smartphone era kicked in. The company has attributes of making sturdy, good looking and reliable devices for years. However, after the sale of mobile phones business to Microsoft, a lot of the Nokia fans left disappointed or even deceived. On the other hand, the company tries to make a comeback. It may not be the greatest comeback, but we are still happy to see that Nokia brand is still alive.

The comeback is not the greatest ever for a few reasons. First, the company starts not with a phone, but with a tablet , which has never been Nokia’s best talent. Second, the Nokia N1 tablet is not produced by the company directly, but by the Foxconn, the same factory that produces iDevices. Indeed, Nokia assures that the tablet is manufactured under strict guidelines and supervision of their employees to make sure that the device meets the legendary Nokia’s build quality and other high manufacturing standards. Third, we do not want to be bias, but… The N1 tablet has “a little bit” of inspiration from a particular company, which usually produces aluminium tablets…

So is Nokia N1 tablet suitable for a comeback? Is it a device worth your attention? Let’s find out in our review.

Design

When we were talking about a certain inspiration from the other company, we had the design in mind. Let’s take a look at the gallery below.

It does have some signature Lumia elements in the design, but for us, it looks almost exactly the same as the iPad mini. Speaking of which, both devices have exactly the same all-aluminium body, which has the same feel to the touch.

The same as iPad’s, Nokia N1’s body has a matte finish. Also, the bonding between the metal casing and glass screen is perfect. Although Nokia does not own factories, but Foxconn OEM technology is also trustworthy.

According to the official website information, Nokia N1’s body weight is 318 grams, compared to the iPad mini’s 2 331 grams. Well, here Nokia managed to outperform Apple in the “thinnest and lightest” department.

As we can see on the right side of the device, it has the volume up/down buttons, which are similarly placed like iPad mini’s and Xiaomi’s tablets. In addition, the power on/off button as well as the back camera sensor is placed on almost exactly the same position.

Here you can see a 3.5 mm headphone jack on the top of the device, which sits next to the the microphone.

If we take a look at the bottom part of the device, we can see dual-stereo speakers and Type-C USB 2.0 port. Nokia N1 is the first to use the Type-C USB interface in the mass production. One of the greatest advantages of this connector type is that it is reversible (the same as Apple’s lightning cable).

As far as body thickness goes, Xiaomi’s tablet, iPad mini 2 and official Nokia N1 thickness data were 8.5 mm, 7.5 mm and 6.9 mm. Xiaomi and Apple are using a wedge-shaped design, so the device looks thinner, and Nokia N1 is in the body with a deep rounded edge processing. Therefore, although the official data looks very nice, but there was no significant difference in real feel of all the devices. Lastly, similar to the Apple’s offering, Nokia’s tablet comes in Natural Aluminum and Lava Gray colour options.

Specs

We have to say that the Nokia N1 tablet has pretty specs. It spots the dimensions of 200.7 x 138.6 x 6.9 mm (7.90 x 5.46 x 0.27 in), weighs 318 g. Also, it has an 7.9 inches IPS LCD screen, which has a very high resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels, which translates to 324 ppi pixel density. All of this beauty is covered by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3.

If we take a look under the hood, we can find a powerful Quad-core 2.3 GHz Intel Atom Z3580 CPU, backed up by PowerVR G6430 GPU and 2 GB of RAM. Also, there is a 32 GB of internal storage, which is, however, non-expandable. At the front there is a 5mp snapper and 8mp shooter on the back, which is capable of recording 1080p at 30fps.

What is more, the tablet comes with the usual connectivity package, which includes Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS and microUSB v2.0, Type-C reversible connector.

All of this is run by the Android 5.0 Lollipop and the non-removable Li-Ion 5300 mAh (18.5 Wh) battery is keeping the lights on.

We have to say that the device looks pretty powerful on paper and we expect it to perform that good in real life as well.

Display

As we have already mentioned in the specs, device has an 7.9 inches IPS LCD screen, which has a very high resolution of 1536 x 2048 pixels, which translates to 324 ppi pixel density. All of this beauty is covered by the Corning Gorilla Glass 3. We have to say that the screen has natural looking colours, it is very bright, sharp and vivid as it can be expected by the high quality IPS LCD panel.

Performance

Xiaomi to unveil an extremely thin flagship on January 15

Xiaomi had a very productive 2014. The company sold over 61.2 million smartphones last year, which is a 227 percent increase in shipment sales as compared to the previous year. With such sales, the company managed to generate CNY74.3 billion in tax inclusive sales last year, which was again a 135 percent increase as compared to 2013. Now, the company is trying to continue its impressive sales with a series of product announcements this year.

Xiaomi had hinted that it would release a flagship device among other products in January. In fact, the company is keeping a press conference on 15 January 2015 to unveil this new flagship device. Lei Jun, the founder of Xiaomi took to Weibo to announce that there is no better way to start the year than to announce a flagship device.

“There’s no better way to start 2015 than with our newest products” said Lei Jun via the official Xiaomi Weibo page (translated).

Xiaomi’s official page announced the event and said that the press conference will be held at the Beijing National Convention Center on January 15 at 2 PM. The new flagship will focus on slimness as the poster released by the company says that the phone will be thinner than the cicada’s wings (an insect). The company also said that 1000 press conference tickets will be available for sale via Xiaomi’s Mall App. Each ticket will be priced at 99 Yuan (about $16) and will be sold from January 8 starting 12 PM.

People always love slim phones, but not at the cost of top end specifications. Most slim phones have to sacrifice on battery capacity which we feel is an unnecessary move. Lets hope that Xiaomi’s new flagship (aka Xiaomi Mi5?) comes with a large battery to run atleast a day without having to connect to a charger.

We have already seen plenty of leaks of the upcoming Xiaomi Mi5 / Mi4S, and if the new flagship is anything like the leaked pictures and specs, then Xiaomi definitely has another best seller under its belt.

OPPO U3 hits TENAA: Could be the world’s thinnest 4X Optical Zoom phone

Last year, Oppo announced the OPPO N3 with the rotating camera and the OPPO R5, the world’s thinnest smartphone (Now, Vivo X5 Max currently holds this title). Today, we have information about another upcoming OPPO device which recently hit TENAA called the OPPO U3. Thanks to TENAA, we have some major information about this new OPPO smartphone.

TENAA reveals that the OPPO U3 will feature a large 5.9-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. It will be powered by an eight-core processor clocked at 1.7GHz with 2GB RAM and 16GB internal storage. This storage can be further expanded via the given MicroSD card slot. The rear camera is of 13MP and comes with 4X optical zoom. Yes, this phone will reportedly feature 4X zoom which makes it even superior to the 3X zoom found on the new ASUS Zenfone ZOOM (ZX550). In fact, the phone will measure just 9mm in thickness which will make it the thinnest 4X optical Zoom smartphone in the market. The ASUS ZenFone ZOOM had a 11.95mm body, which makes it thicker than the OPPO U3. TENAA is usually right about the upcoming phone’s specs, so this could turn out to be true. The front camera is of 5MP and the other body measurements are as follows — 156.8 x 81.8mm. With the optical zoom tech inside and the large 5.9-inch display, the U3 is a bit heavy at 180grams.

The OPPO U3 is capable of recording high quality videos too, thanks to the inbuilt Asahi Kasei AK4961 high performance 32-bit advanced audio codec. This was the same codec used in the ZTE Nubia Z7 smartphone. The company will also reveal a new headset called as the OPPO PM-3 headphones along with the device. The headphone is shown in the pictures below.

Overall, the OPPO U3 comes out as a very attractive device. The specs are top notch and the 4X Zoom in particular will attract a lot of camera enthusiasts. Pricing or release dates are not yet revealed, so we’ll have to wait for a few more weeks for some official details.

HTC Hima (m9) Might be the First Device with MT6795

This year at CES 2015, HTC is busy announcing some new devices in the HTC Desire range. While we are flooded with the news from CES, today morning, we got some news about the upcoming HTC Flagship, the HTC Hima M9.

Taiwan press reports that HTC Hima M9 will feature a Mediatek powered variant too. This will be the first time that the Taiwanese smartphone company will be using a Mediatek processor for its flagship device. The flagship variant will be powered by a Mediatek MT6795 octa-core processor which was unveiled back in July last year. MT6795 is a true 64-bit octa-core processor and will be clocked at 2.2GHz. Its’ inbuilt modem can support category 4 FDD and TDD LTE networks.

However, the true flagship model won’t be powered by Mediatek. Instead, the main HTC Hima M9 version will come with the powerful octa-core offering from Qualcomm — Snapdragon 810 processor. The Mediatek powered variant will probably retail inside its home market.

The main difference between the two models will be its price. Both the processors are capable, hence, there is no need to cut down on other specs. So, this Mediatek powered variant will be cheaper and will be much more attractive to users who are looking for a less costly HTC Hima M9. This will also bring HTC’s flagship at a competitive price, which was something that the company couldn’t achieve with its predecessors.

Anyways, it would be interesting to see what all specs the Mediatek powered device brings to the table and the price at which the device is offered.

According to the source, other tech specs of the HTC Hima M9 would be as follows: 5-inch 1080p display, 3GB RAM, 20.7MP primary camera, 13MP / 4Ultra Pixel secondary camera, non-removable 2840 mAh battery. The phone will be available in grey, silver, golden and bronze colors.

Recently, some render images of the HTC Hima M9 flagship were also spotted. While we don’t know whether the final product will look anything like these renders, if it does, then we are in for a treat. The device looked extremely well-built and refined in the pictures and we sure hope that HTC makes the M9 based on these looks. But considering that these renders were made by a designer, we can’t really say that this is the end design for the flagship.

Anyways, HTC is expected to release its flagships as well as its other variants in March 2015.

Nubia Z9 Leaked With “bezelless” Design

We’ve seen quite a lot of rumors that Nubia will release the next flagship, the Nubia Z9 with extremely thin bezels. We’ve heard the bezeless design on Nubia Z7, but it turned out to be fake. But today we got these 2 leaked images from a leaker, which shows the same launch UI as the Nubia Z7 and the same home button, but with almost “bezelless” design .

The picture shows a completely bezel-free phone design (at least if you ignore the extremely thin white frame around the screen). The phone appears to be white with the round red home button we already know from previous ZTE Nubia phones. Touch buttons appear not to be visible except you touch em.

And from the back cover, it can be confirmed it is a Nubia phone. The leaker said this phone is still a propertype and have technique problems that can’t move to mass production. So will this be the final design? Or just some new ways of marketing of Nubia? Let’s find out in the future.
