Recently, the Google Camera app, which is an exclusive app for the company’s Pixel series of smartphones, has been suffering from negative reviews and feedback. But it seems that the issue might not be with the software but rather failure in camera components of the Pixel devices.

AndroidPolice reported on the matter after the search engine giant recently stated that there aren’t any major software related issues in the application. This implies that the users that are facing the camera issues might be suffering from a defect in the hardware on their Pixel smartphones. For those unaware, the number of reports regarding issues with Pixel 2 and Pixel 3 series cameras have been on the rise and the nature of these problems do not point at a software related bug or glitch.

Certain users are having troubles with their device’s rear facing camera, which reportedly stop functioning at times, crash, display just a black screen, or even display an error message to the users. These issues might occur on a regular basis or may even appear on random occasions and has even affected both the first party Google camera app and third party apps as well, like Snapchat or Duo, when these apps try to switch to the rear cameras.

At the moment, wiping app data, factory resets, and even rolling back system software has proven to be ineffective in fixing the issue. Various customers had initially believed that a software change had triggered the problem, but the inconsistencies in these cases and timings indicate otherwise. Meaning, it is likely that the issue is related to the internal components of the Pixel smartphones. Although, we have no way of confirming this right, so take this report with a pinch of salt and stay tuned for more updates.

Back in September, the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL received the Android 11 updates, and have received a security update earlier this week as well. But now, it seems its patch cycles are coming to an end with the last update arriving in December 2020.

The Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have officially reached the end of its three years’ worth of Android version update and security update as of 5th October 2020. Although, the company has promised another update this December, which will be the final patch that will be received by the flagship launches from 2017. Similar to the original Pixel, the Pixel 2 series will also skip the update in November but will receive the December patch, which will include the November update as well.

The most recent update on the device was the security patch, which brought in the October Security patch and also addressed other issues like boot locks, call notification being disabled, auto rotate icon in the wrong orientation, and swipe gestures not responding. The Pixel 2 series was launched back in 2017, with the smaller variant being made by HTC, while the larger version was made by LG.

Under the hood, both variants were powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 SoC along with 4GB of RAM and either 64 or 128GB of internal storage. The Google Pixel 2 devices were known for their photographic prowess, and “ushered in a new era for computational photography,” as per 9to5Google. These were flagship grade handsets and had lived up to their expectations.

It’s been a couple of years since Google started to roll out monthly security patches for Android devices. It is done to ensure the security of the Android platform by fixing vulnerable features and loopholes. The Android phone users report some security issues on Google community forums, and some are reported by security enthusiasts. Although Google has released the Android Security patch for October 2018, it brings several fixes for security vulnerabilities.

Google has added 26 fixes for major vulnerabilities that have been reported by the users on Google community forums. The new fixes are available for different components including the Android framework, media framework, system, kernel, and external layout.  The latest security patch has added a fix for a severe vulnerability in the Android Framework. Google reads in the security bulletin that “The most severe of these issues is a critical security vulnerability in Framework that could enable a remote attacker using a specially crafted file to execute arbitrary code within the context of a privileged process. The severity assessment is based on the effect that exploiting the vulnerability would possibly have on an affected device.”

Google fixes Pixel devices issues

Google has also fixed the fast-charging issues along with an improved overall stability of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL devices while using Android Auto. There are several other fixes for the Pixel devices which have made it more stable.

Google is now rolling out the October 2018 security patch to all the Pixel and Nexus devices. Currently, it is available for Google Pixel, Google Pixel XL, Google Pixel 2, Google Pixel 2 XL, Google Nexus 6P, and Google Nexus 5X. It is also available for all Essential Phone users. In a day or two, other OEMs will even start rolling out the October Security patch for their devices.

Just recently, we saw the Pixel 2 XL teardown which gave us a glimpse of the internals especially the special features the phone comes with. The Google Pixel 2 has not gotten the teardown treatment, brought to you courtesy of Zack Jerry (JerryRigsEverything). The Youtube video shows the teardown process right from taking off the display panel to removing all other components within, including the battery. 

The Pixel 2 is water resistant so all extremes are expected to be watertight and rightly so, the display panel is solidly glued to the body of the phone. The glue had to be separated with a suction cup and a pry tool and even the heat gun had to be employed in order to soften the glue. After a while, a business card was used in order for the pry tool not to damage the screen under the display which is very fragile. After the display is separated, the ribbon cable connecting the display to the panel can then be unscrewed and disconnected so that the screen can be separated completely. After the screen is removed, the screws holding the mid-frame to the phone becomes accessible and there are a total of 12 screws. Lifting the mid-frame off the phone after unscrewing reveals all the internals.

What caught our attention the most is the waterproofing measures employed which ensure the phone meets the IP 67 rating. There is an extra amount of dielectric grease around the rubber ring on the charging port to ensure it is water resistant. Another interesting thing is that the battery is pretty easy to remove just like the screen. The Pixel 2 also comes with the same squeezing function that is found on the Pixel 2 XL and the squeezable frame sensors are noticed to be located at the two side edges of the frame with connectors for each of them that connects them to the panel. Google announced the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL last week and one thing that stood out is the powerful camera the flagship models are said to pack. The Pixel 2 camera is presently DXOMark’s highest rated smartphone camera, a fact that was only revealed after the launch. But one question still unanswered is how the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL fare in benchmark tests.

That has now come out to the open because the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL have been spotted on the database of Geekbench. Obviously, both smartphones are powerful terminals with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 processor piloting the affairs in both models. The Pixel 2 Geekbench score shows it scored 1918 points on the single core test and expectedly, the Pixel 2 XL also recorded the same score.

On the other hand, on the multi-core score, the Google Pixel 2 scores 6,282 points while the Pixel 2 XL polled a slightly higher 6,316 points. Comparing the scores to that of other Snapdragon 835 phones benchmarked already like the Galaxy S8 (single-core: 1929, multi-core: 6084), OnePlus 5 (single-core: 1963) (multi-core: 6687) and the Xperia XZ Premium (single-core: 1943, multi-core: 5824), the Pixel phones didn’t perform badly. Even the HTC U11 from the same manufacturer of the Pixel phones also scored points hovering around the same range on the single and multi-core tests.

Samsung’s latest Galaxy Note 8 may probably have acquired a new title as the device to have stayed the shortest time on top of the DXOMark chart as having the best camera.  Just a few hours ago, we brought you the news that the Galaxy Note 8 garnered a lofty score of 94 on the DXOmark test. That score has been trumped by Google’s latest offering – Pixel 2 which has polled a higher score of 98, earning the title as the best smartphone camera around presently.

The Google Pixel 2 also trumps the iPhone 8 Plus which held the title for a few days until it was dethroned by the Galaxy Note8. The Pixel 2 features a 1/2.6-inch 12.2MP sensor with a f/1.8 aperture. Apart from the hardware, the Pixel 2 comes with Google’s electronic image stabilization (EIS) as well as an optical image stabilization technology (OIS) and both work together. What this means is that the Pixel 2 camera should be able to stabilize even the shakiest of video, as well as helping you get better static shots. With such features, the Pixel 2 camera will be hard to beat, at least for now.

According to the DXOMark team, the spectacular features which earned the Pixel 2 this lofty score include the wide dynamic range in all lighting conditions, a high level of detail preservation, strong flash performance, and pleasing foreground and background blur for portraits. DXO also rates the video shooting capabilities high, stating that the camera had very good stabilization, fast and accurate autofocus, good noise reduction and detail preservation, and decent white balance. On the whole, the Google Pixel 2 received a score of 99 for photos and 96 for videos, which is what gives the average score of 98. It must be noted that the Pixel scored 89 on DXOMark last year, showing the big upgrade the latest Pixel 2 and the higher Pixel 2 XL come with. Both Pixel 2 flagships utilize the same camera, by the way.

Google has repeatedly teased the Pixel 22 and Pixel 2 XL which are expected to be released on October 4. Ahead of the launch, we may have got an idea of what the front design will look like from these latest leaked photos said to be images of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL screen protectors and they are quite disappointing.

It is hard believing these are actually the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL screen protectors despite the leaker being somebody with a credible track record, due to the large bezels on the top and bottom edges, especially the one purported to be that of the Pixel 2. Both designs look nothing like the cutting-edge bezel-less screens with an edge-to-edge display which has been a regular on the latest full-screen phones we have seen this year alone. Instead, the models seem to have rather large front speakers which appear to be taking up space that could have been used to expand the display further, thereby making its bezels ultra-thin. Even the chin have bezels which some might consider too much. With this sort of design, the Google models may be doomed to fail in the face of rival models like the Galaxy Note 8, Galaxy S8, Mi Mix 2, iPhone X and others.

Google Pixel 2 XL is expected sport a 5.99-inch 1440p OLED display which will have a taller, bezel-less screen, while the Pixel 2 is expected to come in at 4.97-inch 1080p display with a lesser but equally good 1080p resolution and the display will have larger bezels. Both models are also expected to feature dual front speakers on both phones, squeezable displays similar to what we have on the HTC U11 as well as an always-on display mode. If rumours are anything to go by, then the second generation Pixel phones will not pack the 3.5mm audio jack. The launch is just a few days away, so we won’t have to wait long to find out more about them.

Google will go official with the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL on October 4 and they have shared a teaser to that effect on its Made By Google page. The page usually contains all Google’s products and the upcoming models have got their own page. A clever fan was able to dig up some clues by checking up the page and it is an image in the new event site. The image shows two cookies, which are both half black and half white, both on napkins covered with dots. While we cannot say what the image depicts, it could be that the device will only be available in white and black. This suggestion doesn’t look like the right one, though.

The image’s EXIF data was looked up before it was removed and it is shown below. The EXIF data shows Google added some bit of mischief to the beat. The data shows the image was shot with a Google phone but the model is listed as “Not that easy” with a winking smiley. What readily comes to mind is that the photo was shot using either the Pixel 2 or Pixel 2 XL. Of course, both models will likely pack similar camera sensors. The image isn’t too spectacular but you never can tell, it could just be the first of many camera samples from the Pixel 2 that we’ll be seeing in due course. In addition, the image’s geotagging coordinates leads to Google’s Mountain View, California headquarters.

It is no news that Google is already working on a successor to the Pixel and Pixel XL flagships which they launched last year. Before now, there has been the rumour that the second-gen Pixel models would go official on October 5 which is the exact date the first-gen Pixel phones were launched last year.

Also, it was recently outed that the Pixel 2 and XL would feature the Snapdragon 836 chipset which is yet to be announced by Qualcomm. The SD 836 s expected to be slightly faster than the Snapdragon 835 processor which has been the Systems-on-Chip on most Android flagships this year so far. One interesting rumour concerning the Pixel phones is concerning the design. According to rumour, the difference between the Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL will not only in size but also in the design. Te Pixel 2 XL is said to feature a design which would see the display having ultra-thin bezels on all sides while the Pixel 2 will retain the design which the Pixel came with. This is as a result of the fact that the Pixel 2 will be manufactured by HTC while LG will manufacture the Pixel 2 XL. Last year’s models were manufactured in partnership with only HTC.

We have a couple of renders of the Google Pixel 2 on our hands showing what the design of the Google next-gen flagship will look like. The renders were created by someone who’s apparently a fan of the Google phones and are said to be based on the leaked details that are out about the device.

Even though the renders are not the real deal, they may give you an idea of what the final design of the flagship might look like. more often than not, renders created from leaks are to some extent accurate.Google Pixel 2 is reportedly being manufactured by HTC and would come with the code name Walleye. The renders depict the size of the device which is expected to feature a 16: 9 aspect ratio. Other features that can be noticed include the presence of bezels by the display as well as a single rear camera. A rear fingerprint sensor is also located on the renders, which align with earlier leaks detailing such feature.

Recent rumours point to the lack of a physical home button up front and that is captured on the renders. The Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will instead utilise virtual on-screen keys. In addition, the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 will not feature the 3.5mm audio jack and will instead feature pressure-sensitive frames designed by HTC which are expected to be similar to the Edge Sense technology introduced in the HTC U11. But rumour has it that the Pixel XL 2 will not have the same design as the Pixel 2, the reason being that it would purportedly be manufactured by LG The Pixel XL2 is expected to come with a bezel-less design with an 18:9 aspect ratio just like the Galaxy S8. Both models are expected to become official in October this year, most likely running Android O.

Thinner bezels, infinity displays, full-vision displays, and dual cameras are the key features you will find in flagships this year. However, Google is not boarding any of those trains.  A leaked image of the Google Pixel 2 shared by Evan Blass doesn’t have any of those features. Instead, it shows just subtle changes from last year’s model.

The Pixel 2 will be manufactured by HTC while the Pixel XL 2 will be made by LG. While HTC doesn’t make its own displays, Google can simply have LG supply them with a full vision display similar to that of the LG G6 for the Pixel 2, but it seems Google simply doesn’t think it is ready to adopt that design.

Rather the device is shown sporting equally large bezels at the top and bottom just like last year’s model. The same is said for the larger Pixel XL 2.

So, no thinner bezels. But do we at least get dual rear cameras? Google is saying no once again with this year’s flagships.

While there were really no complaints about the Pixel and Pixel XL not having dual cameras, we weren’t expecting to see Google ditch it again this year. The Pixels’ have one of the best cameras you will find on a smartphone till date, so this might be a case of “don’t fix what isn’t broken”.

Google won’t be the only manufacturer without dual camera flagships this year, the Samsung Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ have the same single sensors as last year’s Galaxy S7, HTC’s U Ultra and U 11 also have single sensors. But while Samsung will be launching its first phone with dual cameras this month, Google won’t have another go until next year.

The image above shows a larger sensor which may mean better low-light images, so that counts as an improvement. The camera’s software will definitely also get an upgrade.

So what has changed in the Pixel 2? A front facing speaker. The Pixel had its speaker at the bottom which can easily be covered with your fingers when you’re watching a video either in portrait or landscape mode. The leaked image shows the earpiece speaker is larger now, meaning it will do more than just pump out audio during calls. We can’t see another speaker at the bottom since this isn’t the sharpest of images but we will keep our fingers crossed for dual front facing speakers.

Since we already mentioned that the rear camera has a larger sensor, the other major change is the glass half of the back. It is smaller and doesn’t cover the fingerprint scanner anymore. It also appears to wrap around the sides this time.

Evan has also confirmed that the Pixel 2 and Pixel XL 2 won’t have an audio jack and that may be the greatest change coming to the second generation Pixels.

Both devices should launch in October just like last year, so there is still a good two months of waiting time.

There have been rumors about a Snapdragon 836 chip from Qualcomm. The processor will be a more powerful variant of the Snapdragon 835. It will have the same CPU and GPU as the SD835 but with higher clock speeds.

The Snapdragon 836 was initially said to debut in the Galaxy Note 8 but that won’t be the case. Latest report says the Google Pixel 2 will be the first device to be powered by the chip. This shouldn’t come as a surprise as the Snapdragon 821 first appeared in the Google Pixel.

Just like last year, expect the Snapdragon 836 mobile platform to power new flagships of the second half of the year. We expect to see it in Xiaomi’s Note 3 and the Mi MIX 2. If they also decide to launch a Mi 6s, the Snapdragon 836 may also be the chip of choice.

OnePlus is another manufacturer that may jump on the chip. Last year, they released the OnePlus 3T less than six months after the launch of the OnePlus 3. It looks exactly like the OP3 but has a SD821 processor, a better front camera, a bigger battery etc. There is nothing that says there won’t be a OnePlus 5T or OnePlus 5s.

Although the Snapdragon 836 mobile platform may be the new flagship chip for the second half of the year, we haven’t seen it appear on any benchmarking site. However, we have come across two new chips from Qualcomm: the Snapdragon 840 and Snapdragon 845 mobile platforms.

The Snapdragon 845 is the chip that will power the smartphones of 2018 and its first sighting was in a Samsung device which we believe is a Galaxy S9 prototype. The SD840, a quad-core chip like the former, was also seen in a Samsung device last week. There have been no other reports of the chip, so it is unknown if it will be announced this year or next.

A leak has surfaced showing what allegedly appears to be a new transparent Google Pixel 2 case.

Google has been hitting beyond its target goals of the Google Pixel and Google Pixel XL since its release in 2016. Google has been very informative with reports stating the lack of Pixel stock due to high demand, notably the 128GB Pixel XL variant. The strong line-up of Pixel phones met with a high global demand and has led Google to the development of the next-generation lineup.

According to the source, the most recent rumor that has surfaced is the second installment of the Google Pixel 2 will replace the Pixel XL variant a new “large-sized” phone; this is speculative, but if such rumors are true, this may not be necessarily interpreted as a larger body phone, but a larger display phone instead.

An extensive report shows that the next Pixel has been code-named “Walleye” with addition variant, larger in size, named “Taimen”. The “Taimen” variant is expected to come with a bezel-less display, similar to the design of Samsung’s Galaxy S8, S8+, and Essential Phone; notably the curved corners of the screen.

The leaker “SlashLeaks” posted a photo, what he claims to be a case designed to encase the upcoming Pixel 2. If the photo is verified and confirmed, the Google Pixel 2 will be keeping the fingerprint scanner at the rear of the phone and in the similar position as the original Google Pixel.

What appears to be the most notable change is the shape of the rear-firing shooter, where the camera design has been altered toward the left-side of the phone.

The manufacturer for the upcoming Pixel devices have not be confirmed, but as the current Pixel phone was manufactured by HTC, we may expect HTC to continue with the manufacturing of Google’s next device. However, there have also been rumors that LG will be producing the “Taimen” variant of the device.

Currently, the reports of Google’s Pixel 2 remain speculative, however, when the release date progresses closer to the expected October-November announcement, we are certain that there will be more accurate leaks of the upcoming Google Pixel 2 this year.

The renders of  Google‘s next-generation Pixel 2 leaked online over the weekend on Reddit, bringing to the forefront discussions about the Pixel 2 and the larger Pixel XL 2. The renders were purely a fan-generated concept design of the Google 2017 flagship. According to the fan, the render is just his expression of what he’d like to see on the Pixel 2. The design is also revealed to take cues from the Essential Phone and especially the LG G6. The resemblance with the G6 has nothing to do with earlier rumours that the Pixel XL 2 codenamed Taimen will be designed by LG but the G6 just happens to be the fan’s favourite 2017 Android phone.

The set of renders did indeed take a number of design cues from the LG’s latest flagship, including the Full Vision display panel with an unconventional 18:9 aspect ratio and rounded screen corners, as well as a nearly bezel-less front. The renders also pack horizontally aligned dual cameras at the rear and an unusual dual LED dual-tone flash design with each of the flash sitting on the left and right side of the camera. There is also a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Apart from the camera’s placement and a few other details, the render looks similar to the purported real render of the Pixel 2 which surfaced weeks back.

So far, all information on the Pixel 2 suggests that Google will improve on the Pixel and Pixel XL which was released in the Q4 of 2016. These devices are already high budget smartphones and the Pixel 2 will even be costlier but it is sure to give you a good run for your money.

A new set of data has revealed the possibility that Google will release three models of the Pixel phone this year. The information is coming rather early because the new Pixel models are not expected until October or thereabout. The Google devices were revealed by a set of code on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP) gerrit. The most recent code update to AOSP on Google Source included the term “Taimen” and also included reference to Sailfish, Marlin, Walleye, and Muskie.

The source code only reveals the codenames of the suspected Google devices but from the codenames of previous Google devices, including the Nexus models, we can tell which is bigger. Google seems to have a thing with fishes because all their models have gotten codenames named after fishes and the size of the model usually corresponds with the size of the fish they are named after. The Google Pixel 2 is believed to be codenamed Walleye while the Pixel 2 XL goes by the codename Muskeye. There seems to be a third model, perhaps a Pixel 2 XXL and it is codenamed Taimen.

We are not entirely sure the device codenamed Taimen (Pixel 2 XXL) would indeed be a third Pixel smartphone. It could turn out to be a notebook device or a whole new device category altogether. Google I/O 2017 comes up from May 17 – 19 and we could get a few clues from the event about the upcoming Pixel models.

Water-resistant Chassis

One of the rumored features of Google Pixel 2 is that it will be coming with a water-resistant body. However, it is said to be “still on the table,” indicating the Google is still not sure about adding water-resistance feature to Pixel 2.

However, major flagships from other brands like iPhone 7, Samsung Galaxy S7 and the upcoming LG G6 are equipped with water-resistant chassis, it is likely that the Google will include the feature on Pixel 2.

Topnotch Camera

The 12.3-megapixel is one of the bestselling features of the original Google Pixel. DxOMark, a benchmarking platform for cameras has a given a rating of 89 to the main camera of Google Pixel which makes it the best smartphone camera ever. Rumors have it that one of beat features of Google Pixel 2 will be its topnotch camera.

Google is unlikely to increase the megapixel count, but rumors hint that the stellar camera of Pixel 2 will support advanced low-light photography and it will be also coming with some new features.

Advanced Processor

Google is speculated to be testing multiply prototypes of Pixel 2 with different kinds of processors. One of the prototypes is powered by Snapdragon 83X SoC whereas there is another variant that includes Intel chipset. Also, the search engine is rumored to be testing a custom chipset for Pixel 2. Speculations even suggested that Google is working with MediaTek for Pixel 2. However, this rumor seems unlikely to come true.

Cheaper Pixel 2B Arriving?

The Google Pixel 2 is expected to arrive with an expensive price tag. The starting price of the first-generation Pixel 2 is $649. However, the Pixel 2 is expected to cost “at least” $50 more than the current pricing of Pixel.

Apart from the pricey Pixel 2, Google is also speculated to be working a Pixel 2B that will be coming with modest specs as well as significantly lower price tag.By launching the alleged Pixel 2B phone, the company aims to bring the “Google experience and Google Phone” to developing markets.
