GPU Turbo technology was unveiled on the day when Huawei had announced Honor Play and Honor 9i smartphones in June. It is a hardware-software technology for accelerating the performance of the GPU of a smartphone. Huawei claims that the GPU Turbo technology can enhance the performance of GPU by 60 percent and at the same time it reduces its power consumption by 30 percent. It can also improve the performance AR, VR and EMUI user experience. A recent report has revealed that the Huawei MediaPad M5 is the first tablet from the company to receive GPU Turbo technology. The tablet is expected to receive the vital update in this month.

The above list does not include Honor phones. However, a recent report had revealed that some of the Honor branded smartphones will be also updated with GPU Turbo. Honor 10, Honor 9 Lite, Honor V10 and Honor 7X users located in Europe, Russia, Asia Pacific, India and Middle East will be treated with GPU Turbo update.

Some of the recently unveiled Honor phones that come with GPU Turbo technology are Honor Play and Honor 10 GT. Huawei also plans to launch a GPU Turbo optimized gaming smartphone later this year.

The Honor 8 Pro (Honor V9) and Honor 9 were both upgraded to Oreo back in February. The former has also received a new update.

The February update was supposed to bring Face Unlock to the phone but it didn’t. The new update addresses that and also brings some new features.

Apart from the new unlocking mode, there is also a privacy feature for hiding notifications on the lock-screen and March’s security patch included in the update.

The update is about 500MB in size and is said to be rolling out in batches according to the Honor India Twitter page.

The update started rolling out yesterday (February 7) on the two high-end devices. The French division of Huawei’s sub-brand has also revealed the time frame in which two other handsets will get the update. We are referring to the older Honor 8 and the new midrange Honor 7X. In January Honor India declared that Honor 8 wouldn’t be getting EMUI 8.0 or Android Oreo because of software and hardware limitations, but it seems that they were wrong.

According to Honor France, the device will be updated to EMUI 8.0 in Q2 2018 (the period which goes from April to June), and the same will happen with the Honor 7X. At this point, we do not know who to believe about the Honor 8. The update is actually bringing important improvements to Honor 9 and 8 Pro. They include a better system stability and an optimized battery life, besides a visual refresh of the user interface. Further, new artificial intelligence features have been added.

They are similar to the ones provided by Kirin 970 and its Neural Processing Unit, even though the SoCs inside these phones do not have a dedicated module for AI. Automatic photo scene detection, instant translation, and automatic UI optimization have been added. Besides these exclusive features, there will obviously be the most important stock features included into Android Oreo. Among these, the Honor 9 and 8 Pro will get the picture-in-picture mode which will allow you to reduce app as small floating windows on the display, and you will be able to check them while doing other tasks.

Do you think the Honor 8 will be updated to EMUI 8.0 as well or it will stay with Nougat?

The update started rolling out to the Honor 8 Pro first while the Honor 9 is scheduled to get it later. It brings all the goodness of Android 8.0 such as picture-in-picture mode, auto-fill, notification dots, and new emojis.

You also get EMUI 8.0 features like AI Intelligent Engine which allocates resources to your most used apps and handles low memory management for a smooth experience; dynamic wallpaper; and LinkedIn built-in. The update is about 2.8GB in size.

However, when an Honor 8 user enquired about Android 8.0 Oreo’s arrival, she was told that the company won’t be releasing the Oreo update for it.

According to Honor India, the Honor 8 will not be receiving Android 8.0 Oreo update because of “hardware and software limitations.” However, Honor is yet to make an official announcement on it. It could be a statement from an ill-informed social media representative. Hence, our readers are advised to wait for an official from Honor.

The Android 8.0 Oreo along with EMUI 8.0 has been made available for Huawei Mate 9 and Mate 9 Pro in December. In the same month, the Oreo EMUI 8.0 update was also brought to Honor 9 and Honor V9 Pro. The update will be soon coming to other handsets like Honor 8 Pro, Honor 8 Lite and Honor 7X. Zhao had also claimed in the previous month that “some other Honor smartphones” will be treated with Android Oreo without mentioning the names of the phones.

Launched in July 2016, the Honor 8 features a 5.2-inch FHD display, Kirin 950 chipset, 4 GB of RAM and it was made available in 32 GB and 64 GB storage models. The handset has already received Android 7.0 Nougat + EMUI 5.0 update. It has a dual camera setup that includes a pair of 12-megapixel sensors and it has a selfie camera of 8-megapixel. A number of phone makers are hard at work trying to update their devices to Android Oreo. A few of them have already rolled out the update while some are at various beta stages. Huawei’s sub-brand Honor, belongs to the latter category.

The manufacturer has announced that Android Oreo will be available for the Honor 8 Pro starting as a closed beta. So if you own the Honor 8 Pro and registered for the beta program, the update should hit your device anytime soon.

Honor had promised that the Honor 8 Pro would be updated to Android 8 by the end of 2017 but sadly failed to deliver.

The Honor 8 Pro is the international variant of the Chinese Honor V9. It has a 5.7” 1440 x 2560 display, is powered by the Kirin 960 and has 6GB of RAM and 64GB storage.

Like the Honor 8, the Pro also has dual rear cameras (12MP monochrome + 12MP RGB) and an 8MP selfie camera. It also packs a massive 4000mAh battery with support for 18W fast charging. The large battery comes in handy seeing as the display draws a lot of power.

Honor, a subsidiary brand of Huawei, has confirmed that both smartphones would be getting Android 8.0 Oreo update before the end of the year. HMD Global has also officially confirmed that the Nokia Android smartphones would be upgraded to

Since then, couple of smartphone manufacturers such as BlackBerry, HTC and Sony have confirmed on the devices that will be updated to Android 8.0 Oreo. As far as Honor phones are concerned, the Chinese firm had kept a press conference recently in New Delhi, India. During the press meet, the company allowed its officials to answer queries on its old and new devices.

When Honor was asked about the arrival about the release of Android 8.0 Oreo update for the Honor 8 Pro and Honor 6X, the company claimed that the firmware upgrade would be released within few months. The company confirmed that these smartphones would be getting the Android 8.0 Oreo update by the end of this year. However, there is a possibility that the rollout of Oreo update for Honor 6X may happen in early 2018. Currently, the Honor 8 Pro is running on Android Nougat. The Honor 6X is also running on Nougat, but it was launched with Android 6.0 Marshmallow OS.

Apart from the Nokia 3310 (2017) feature phone, HMD Global has increased couple of Nokia phones running on Android OS this year. The Nokia 3, Nokia 5, Nokia 6 and Nokia 8 are all currently running on Android Nougat OS. A tweet released by Juho Sarvikas who is Chief Product Officer with HMD Global has confirmed that the all the Nokia Android phones including the Nokia 3 would be upgraded to Android 8.0 Oreo. However, Sarvikas refrained from revealing the exact timeframe of the release.

All of our smartphones will upgrade to Oreo, Nokia 3 included. No comments yet on timing so that I don't get into trouble .

The Nokia 3 is running on MediaTek MT6737 chipset whereas the Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 are powered by Snapdragon 430. Hence, some were speculating that the MediaTek chip powered Nokia 3 may not get the latest Android version. However, the Finnish firm has confirmed that the low-end Nokia 3 will be upgraded to Android Oreo.

The company has now confirmed that it will be launching the Honor V9 Play on September 6. Rumors suggest that it could be a youth version of the Honor V9 smartphone that will be packed with toned-down specs.

Huawei’s subsidiary Honor has released an image on Weibo to confirm the arrival of Honor V9 Play in the coming month on the last day of the IFA 2017 tech trade show. However, the event will be held in China and it seems that the smartphone would be initially available in the same country. Just as the Honor 8 Youth Edition was launched as the lower-end version of the Honor 8. The Honor V9 Play is also expected to come with modest specs.

It appears that the Honor V9 Play has already paid a visit to TENAA, the certifying body for telecommunication devices in China. The TENAA listing has revealed the images of the smartphone. The images suggest that it may sport a different design when compared to the Honor V9 smartphone.

Unlike the Honor V9 that features dual rear cameras, the Honor V9 Play is likely to come with a single rear camera. TENAA has revealed that the smartphone may sport a 12-megapixel rear snapper. The images suggest that it may houses a metallic rear with top and bottom portions made up of plastic. The rear side of the smartphone also features a fingerprint reader.

In terms of specifications, the Honor 8 Pro is exactly the same as the Mainland’s Honor V9. It is powered by the same Kirin 960 octa-core and paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB of internal storage with option for expansion. The phone has a large 4000mAh battery with support for fast charging and comes with Huawei’s EMUI 5.1 based on Android 7.0.

The display is a 5.7-inch screen with a resolution of 2560 x 1440p (2K display). The Honor 8 Pro has a dual rear camera setup: one is a 12-megapixel monochrome sensor and the second is a 12-megapixel RGB sensor. An 8-megapixel sensor serves as the front facing camera.

The device will launch as an Amazon Prime exclusive on July 10 at 6 PM local time for ₹29,999 (roughly ¥3151/$464). Just like the China model, the retail box will also double as a pair of VR glasses. There will be a pair of lenses in it. Just put them in place and slide in your phone and you can enjoy your VR content.

The Xiaomi Mi 6 will go on sale tomorrow. From the look of things, it is bound to be in short supply for a while. If you are even able to get your hands on a unit, you will probably be paying a lot more than you should. The price from third party resellers falls between $450 and $470 depending on the storage. That is a lot compared to the ~$421 official price for the 128GB model and ~$363 price for the 64GB variant.

The Mi 6 is one of the few Snapdragon 835-powered smartphones announced so far but not everyone is crazy about the new processor. There are other powerful phones in the market that will handle whatever you throw at them. Some sell for less than the Mi 6 and some even have features missing on Xiaomi’s new flagship. Plus you can get any one of these smartphones without breaking a sweat.

Below is a list of five smartphones we believe are great alternatives to the Xiaomi Mi 6.

OnePlus 3T

OnePlus 3T

The OnePlus 3T is one of the best smartphones in the market right now. It is a combination of great specs, impressive software, and affordable pricing. Just like the Mi 6, the OnePlus 3T also has 6GB of RAM and is available in the same 64GB and 128GB storage variants.

Although its display is bigger at 5.5-inches, it has Gorilla Glass 4 protection, a feature that is repeatedly missing on Xiaomi’s flagship phones. The 3T can also be updated to Android Nougat 7.1.1 and to be honest, we know Oxygen OS is a lot smoother than MIUI. Let’s not forget Dash Charge which is way faster than the QC 3.0 on the Mi 6.

For $439, you can pick up the 64GB model of the OnePlus 3T or you can wait till the 128GB model is in stock and grab it for $479.

Mi 5s Plus

Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus

One of the unique selling points of the Mi 6 is the dual rear cameras, however, this isn’t Xiaomi’s first dual camera smartphone. The Redmi Pro and Mi 5S Plus are the first and second respectively.

While the Redmi Pro is no longer in production, the Mi 5s Plus still is. It won’t take bokeh pictures like the Mi 6 because it uses the monochrome + RGB format for its dual Sony IMX258 13MP cameras but you can be assured of taking sharper images.

Earlier today, Xiaomi announced a price slash for the 4GB + 64GB and 6GB RAM + 128GB variants. The former now sells for approx. $315 and the latter which has the same memory configuration as the high-end Mi 6 is priced at approx. $355. You can also grab the 3GB + 64GB model for roughly $250.

Giztop has the phone for $369 (4GB +64GB).

Xiaomi Mi 5s Plus Case

Missing out on the blue and gold color of the Xiaomi Mi 6? Then grab the case above on AliExpress and worry no more.

Xiaomi Mi MIX

Xiaomi Mi MIX

Don’t be surprised that the alternatives we are suggesting include Xiaomi phones. Xiaomi is good at providing flagship specs at a low price, so whatever we are recommending as an alternative to the Mi 6 shouldn’t put a hole in your pocket.

The Mi MIX will turn more heads than the Mi 6 and that’s because of its bezel-less display. The Mi MIX is the concept device that made it out of the factory and onto store shelves. Its 6.4-inch display is a beauty that extends to the edges of three of its four sides, giving you more screen estate while still maintaining a small footprint.

It is powered by the Snapdragon 821 processor like the other two phones above and is available with either 6GB of RAM + 256GB ROM or 4GB RAM + 128GB ROM. The former will cost you around $600 on Aliexpress while the 4GB variant can be gotten for about $550. Did I forget to mention that the Mi MIX has a ceramic body? So you don’t need to wait for the ceramic version of the Mi 6 which won’t be on sale tomorrow and will be released in limited quantities.

Honor V9

Huawei Honor V9/Honor 8 Pro

This was the first flagship of the year and a pretty device from Huawei too. The Honor V9 has a 2K display, 6GB of RAM, 128GB of storage, and dual rear cameras that takes 3D photos and offers the same performance as that of the Huawei P9 just without the Leica branding. Reviews say the low-light performance is nothing short of impressive. You also can’t go wrong with the blue and red color variants of this phone.

The Honor V9 was released internationally as the Honor 8 Pro but pricing is a bit different for both. The 6GB RAM Honor V9 will cost you between $525 to $560 on Aliexpress depending on the color while the 4GB variant sells for between $450 to $500.

Note that the Honor V9 is currently available in our own shop as well (giztop) for $479 (6GB + 64GB).

The Honor 8 Pro sells for a lot more in Europe. It has 64GB of storage instead of 128GB like the Honor V9 but keeps the RAM at 6GB. Price is a whopping £474 (~$611).

Le Pro 3

LeEco Le Pro 3

The Le Pro 3 closes the list. Just like the rest of the devices above, it also has 6GB of RAM and comes with either 64GB or 128GB of storage. Powered by a Snapdragon 821 processor and 4070mAh battery, the Le Pro 3 is the only alternative that doesn’t have an audio jack like the Mi 6. However, LeEco makes up for it with its CDLA technology. The phone also comes with Dolby Atmos Audio which improves the audio quality.

The LeEco Le Pro 3 wouldn’t have made our list if not for its low price as its the only phone on this list that is not running Android Nougat or has an update planned for it.

The 6GB RAM + 64GB Le Pro 3 sells for between $315 and $350 while the 4GB RAM version with 64GB of storage is priced at about $290.

Honorable Mention: ZTE Axon 7S

The original ZTE Axon 7 was released back in June 2016 with a Snapdragon 820 processor and 4GB of RAM. It also got a Nougat update back in February that made it Google Daydream compatible. While there has been no news of a ZTE Axon 8, we were surprised when ZTE silently released a new phone a few weeks back. That phone is the ZTE Axon 7s and it gets a honorable mention on our list.

The Axon 7s retains most of the design from the Axon 7 but is now powered by the Snapdragon 821. The RAM has been increased to 6GB and storage is 128GB.

The other major upgrade in the Axon 7s is the dual rear cameras. You still get that 20MP 1.25µm camera but it is now paired with a 12MP Sony IMX368 1µm sensor. What’s more, the Axon 7 has a microSD slot too, a feature none of the other phones on this list has and also retains the stereo speakers though they have been redesigned. The price is still unknown for now but it is expected to be around $500.

The Honor 8 Pro is now official and for those who have been following the news, it is the same device as the Honor V9 in China.

The Honor 8 Pro sports a 5.7-inch QHD display. That display is not for waste as one of the phone’s USP is its VR capabilities. Honor is pushing this by bundling the phone with a pair of cardboard VR glasses in the box and a VR game called Galaxy on Fire.

There is 6GB of RAM, 64GB of storage and a Kirin 960 SoC under the hood. The Honor 8 Pro has dual 12MP cameras and a fingerprint scanner on the back. The rear cameras have the same pixel count as that of the Honor 8 last year but have ditched the glass front and back for metal. The Honor 8 Pro is also missing the Honor 8’s Smart Key.

The camera up front is an 8MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture. There is a 4000mAh battery that supplies power and Honor says you should be able to get 2 days from regular use or 1.44 days of heavy use. Even with the big battery, the Honor 8 Pro is just 6.97mm thick and weighs 183g.

Honor has released the 8 Pro in midnight black, gold and navy blue. Pre-orders can be made on Vmall.com for £474 ($592/¥4082). That’s way higher than the ¥2599 ($377) and ¥3499($436) price of the 64GB and 128GB Honor V9 respectively. However, the price also includes a free Honor tripod selfie stand + 128GB Sandisk MicroSD card; a Honor tripod selfie stand + a 10,000mAh power bank; or a Strontium MicroSDXC Card 3-in-1 + VR Glasses.

The live launch event will begin at 10:30 GMT which indicates that the unveil event may be live streamed.

Since the teaser does not reveal the name of the Honor phone that will be unveiled next month, the rumor mill is speculating that Huawei may announce the Honor V9 or Honor Magic or Honor 8 Lite at the upcoming launch event.

The Honor V9 that was announced in China in the previous month may get unveiled on April. Around two weeks ago, popular leakster, Roland Quandt had hinted that Honor V9 may arrive as Honor 8 Pro in international markets on April 5.

In the teaser present in the tweet, the meteor-like thing that is striking the earth can be seen in three colors such as gold, blue and black. The tipster had also revealed that the smartphone would be arriving in three color variants such as gold, blue and black. its red variant that is available in China may not be releasing in international markets.

The in-house Kirin 960 chipset is the flagship SoC from Huawei. The Honor V9 was the first smartphone to arrive with this new chipset. Hence, it is dubbed as the first true flagship from Huawei for 2017. It features a 5.7-inch Quad HD screen and comes in 4 GB and 6 GB RAM variants and 64 GB and 128 GB storage variants. It features a 12-megapixel + 12-megapixel dual rear snapper. It has a selfie shooter of 8-megapixel. It runs on Android 7.0 Nougat based EMUI 5.0 and is packed with a 4,000 mAh battery.

The amazing Huawei Honor Magic that is curved in all eight sides was launched in December 2016. It is exclusively available in China. Since the launch event is organized by Western Europe wing of Honor, the Chinese firm may announce an international edition of the innovative Honor Magic phone. The Honor 8 Lite that was officially launched in China last month is also speculated to debut for western markets.

The device recently went up on sales clutching a price tag starting at 2599 Yuan ($377) for the base version. There are now indications the Honor V9 would debut in Europe under a different moniker.

According to a Twitter tipster, the Honor V9 would likely be launched in Europe as the Honor 8 Pro on April 5. Already, Huawei has sent out invites for a launch event billed for April 5 but the company didn’t explicitly state the device that would launch on that day. The tipster tips, though, that the V9 would come in gold, blue and black variants, likely omitting the sleek red variant seen in China.

Should this turn out to be true, it sure wouldn’t take a thing out of the Honor V9 which is a true flagship with lots of stunning features. Like the words of English poet, William Shakespeare, “A rose by any other name would smell as sweet”.

As a reminder, the Honor V9 or Honor 8 Pro packs a powerful Kirin 960 chip inside a 5.7-inch QHD LCD screen. The processor is backed by 4GB RAM on some models and 6GB of RAM on the top models. There is the option of a 64GB or 128GB storage version to choose from. The V9 also sports a 12 MP + 12 MP f/2.2 dual cameras on the back (one sensor is monochrome ) with laser autofocus, LED flash, and 4K video capture. This isn’t a Leica branded shooter, but it is still a decent setup.

An example is OPPO’s R9 whose international variant is called the OPPO F1 Plus. News as it that Huawei plans to do the same with the soon-to-be released Honor V9.

The Honor V9 is a dual-camera phone scheduled to launch on February 21. It will be available in 4GB RAM and 6GB RAM variants and will have a 5.7-inch 2K display.

A Russian website, Hi-Tech says a phone with the same specs called the Honor 8 Pro will be announced at MWC. The Honor 8 Pro will have a Kirin 960 SoC clocked at 2.4GHz, 6GB of RAM, up to 128GB of expandable storage and two 12MP cameras on the rear. The front facing camera is an 8MP sensor and there is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. It will also come with Android Nougat out of the box.

The only difference between both devices should be the absence of the China Mobile logo present on the image of the Honor V9 above. There is no news on the Honor 8 Pro making it to North America but judging from the success of the Honor 8, it will be unwise not to do so.
