It’s been two days since the release of the OnePlus 5 and many fans and reviewers have already been able to test out OnePlus 5’s flashy new camera features. There is, however, been a feature that OnePlus has not been transparent about; this being the ‘optical zoom’ feature.

The OnePlus 5’s dual camera setup houses a 16-megapixel IMX398 regular sensor with f/1.7 lens and a 20-megapixel IMX350 sensor with f/2.6 telephoto lens. The latter provides the further zoom that the 16-megapixel sensor cannot handle. This method operates the same as many other devices, such as Oppo’s R11 and Apple’s iPhone 7 Plus.

Optical zoom theoretically provides consistent quality; however, the claim OnePlus had published on their website and announcement about OnePlus 5’s 2.0x “lossless” zoom isn’t purely optical.

According to the co-founder Carl Pei, the telephoto lens zooms to a maximum at 1.6x zoom, then the OnePlus 5 switches to software-powered ‘SmartCapture Multiframe Technology’, known as ‘digital zoom’, providing the remaining 0.4x zoom.

Optical zoom is at 1.6x, the remaining 0.4x is realized through SmartCapture multiframe technology.

Carl Pei, Co-Founder of OnePlus, officially tweeted that they have advertised the OnePlus 5 provides 2x lossless zoom, and not optical. This is an attempt to clear uncertainty for consumers and fans who have hit confusion about OnePlus’ marketing.

Uncertainty and initial disappointment haven’t been limited to the camera either, as more users have discovered the OnePlus 5 has its predecessor’s display leading to more concern on what other unclear components we do not know currently.

What are your thoughts on OnePlus 5’s Lossless Zoom Feature?

OnePlus 5 is undoubtedly one of the most anticipated flagship smartphones of 2017. Our wait ends tomorrow, i.e. June 20 when the company will officially launch the smartphone. Just two days later, the OnePlus 5 will be launched in India, which has become an important market for the brand. While OnePlus has revealed quite a lot of details regarding the OnePlus 5 in the past few weeks, we know almost everything about the upcoming flagships, thanks to the numerous leaks and rumors going around the internet. Some of the leaks did contradict at first, but as the release date neared, the leaks became more or less similar and before its official launch, we have a very good idea as to what to expect from the flagship.

OnePlus 5 Design

One of the areas, where you might be disappointed with the new OnePlus 5 is the design. But before we jump on to the design department, it’s worth noting that the OnePlus has skipped the naming, ‘OnePlus 4’ which should have been the logical successor to the OnePlus 3T. The company has confirmed that they are skipping the OP4 name in favor of OnePlus 5, but the exact reason for such a jump is not explained.  It is worth noting that ‘4’ is considered as an unlucky number in Chinese, so the brand probably decided to play it safe by going for a more luck friendly number, hence the name OnePlus 5.

Coming back to the design, you won’t be wrong to say the design resembles the iPhone 7 Plus. Heck, for that matter, the phone looks like the OPPO R11 that was unveiled just recently. To be honest, the design is not at all bad to look at, but the lack of originality is something that could bother some OnePlus fans. Being fair, it’s worth noting that the OnePlus 3T didn’t exactly have a revolutionary design, but it was well accepted by customers worldwide. We could see something similar with the OnePlus 5 as well, especially after hearing the comments from one of the OnePlus’ Product managers.

While you may have already seen renders from the company, note that OnePlus CEO claims that it will be one of the thinnest flagships in the market right now. OP3T is pretty thin at 7.5mm, so it’s safe to assume that the CEO is probably talking about a thickness below the 7mm mark.

Metal should be the ideal choice for the body, with the antenna lines hiding near the top and bottom edges. The front features a physical home button that looks bigger than the one on the OP3T. It should also feature the fingerprint scanner.

Overall, the design isn’t revolutionary, but if you can ignore the striking resemblance to other smartphones like the OPPO R11, you should be okay with the phone’s appearance. We haven’t got a confirmation about the headphone jack, but considering OnePlus CEO’s earlier comments, we would be really surprised to see the phone without the traditional 3.5mm jack.

OnePlus 5 Specs

The OnePlus 5 will come with a Snapdragon 835 chipset inside along with at least 6GB and 8GB RAM options. The storage variants are not yet revealed but expect at least 64GB and 128GB editions. No information about a MicroSD card slot, so we’ll have to wait for the official release for this. As for the battery, there are currently two rumors going around — one claiming a large 3600mAh battery inside and another one claiming a decent 3300mAh battery. Dash charging should be of the new generation, which is said to be 25% faster than its previous gen.

A very recent report about the phone’s display revealed that it will support DCI-P3 color space, ensuring amazing display quality. The panel should be Optic AMOLED as the OP3T since Carl Pei recently confirmed continued support for this display type for a foreseeable future.

OnePlus 5 camera

OnePlus will be joining the likes of iPhones 7 Plus, Xiaomi Mi 6, OPPO R11 and others by equipping its newest flagships with a dual camera setup at the back. It won’t likely be a wide angle + telephoto setup as the Mi 6, rather, it should be similar to the Huawei P10’s monochrome + RGB setup. The samples revealed by the company’s CEO look pretty good so far, including a series of images showing off the phone’s HDR prowess. There are actually quite a number of samples taken from the OP5 already revealed to us and you can check them out here. One of the Chinese bloggers with access to the phone even said that the camera is at par with the Samsung Galaxy S8. So, we are all excited to see the real camera performance of the device. While we don’t know the exact camera specs of the setup, expect something like a 23MP + 16MP rear setup and a 16MP front setup.

OnePlus 5 Pricing, Release & Availability

OnePlus will officially announce the OnePlus 5 on June 20, although a worldwide release date is not yet revealed. But in India, you can get the phone starting June 22, exclusively via Amazon.

Pricing is said to be higher than the previous generation OnePlus flagships, but it should be still within the affordable flagship segment. You can expect the OnePlus 5 to retail for anywhere near $500 (maybe even $520) but the more likely price tag should be $499.

Just one day remain for the OnePlus 5 to be officially announced and all of these details will be confirmed once the phone is launched tomorrow.

Pete Lau, CEO of OnePlus, has shared a number of sample photos on Saturday, exposing the potential quality the OnePlus 5 can provide.

The photo shown is set on a river or lake outside a Chinese city taken during sunset.

According to the source, there is an indication that the camera setup was taken featuring a relatively high dynamic range, in comparison to OnePlus’ predecessors. This feature is used to correct exposure levels of multiple objects in a single photo.

Smartphone cameras have been known to provide underwhelming low-light reproductions such as sunsets. This happens when a camera senses a great difference between the brightest and darkest levels of the image. The image obtained has had its metadata washed, providing no details about the specifications and settings were used before the picture was taken.

On the other hand, the picture obtained by the source was uncropped or no resized, presenting an original 4608 by 3,456 pixel image. This indicates that the OnePlus 5 will be firing pictures from at least one 16-megapixel shooter.

These suggestions coincide with an OEM’s claims previously reported before OnePlus’ official tweet exposing back of the device and the camera setup. What we cannot confirm currently is the exact specifications on the dual camera setup. Furthermore, unlike other dual camera setups, OnePlus could be opting for a monochrome and RGB sensor. This setup should provide better contrast and more effective high dynamic range photos.

OnePlus have stressed they have been working closely with DxO Labs to develop imaging software that would provide impeccable photo reproduction competing with smartphones such as the Pixel XL, Galaxy S8, P10 etc. What are your thoughts about OnePlus’ latest photo sample? Do you think OnePlus will be able to compete with other flagship phones on HDR photography?

OnePlus has always been known for its innovative flagships right from the OnePlus 1, which all surprisingly come cheaper than their contemporaries. That was what we were expecting on the OnePlus 5 but the disappointment in the design continues to build up. The design of the OP5 is again enmeshed in controversy as a couple of leaked protective case has highlighted the similarity between the OnePlus 5 and the recently launched OPPO R11.

The images show the OPPO R11 encased inside the OnePlus 5 protective case and surprisingly, it fits perfectly. All the ports, as well as the power and volume buttons, are rightly positioned where there are cutouts. The dual rear camera and LED flash are also well suited on the casing. In addition, both devices seem to have the same size which would then mean that the OnePlus 5 will come with a 5.5-inch display size.

So, apart from looking like the iPhone 7 Plus, the OnePlus 5 also has a look-alike in the OPPO R11, Despite the similar design, though, the OP5 has a lot of features and hardware which perhaps places it above both models. The OnePlus 5 is coming with the latest power chip in town and would have a massive 8GB RAM on one of its versions. The OnePlus flagship has also been revealed to feature a super-fast UFS 2.1 flash memory.

Meanwhile, reservation for the OnePlus 5 is still going on at JD.com and presently, the figures are over 160,000 presently. The OP5 is expected to go official on the 21st of July in a news conference holding in China.

OnePlus CEO Liu Zuotu has again posted another evidence that projects his company’s upcoming flagship model. This time around, the CEO shared a single shot which he claimed in the night shot of the OnePlus 5 camera. Evidently, the photo was indeed captured in the night and the level of clarity is just superb for a smartphone camera’s shot.

The OnePlus 5 camera has been the subject of numerous teasers which points at a powerful setup. Even recently, the company selected 10 reviewers that would test the camera before the device is launched. We have only been able to spot just one user on Weibo who uses the OnePlus 5 and he claimed in a recent post that the camera is indeed powerful, drawing a comparison with that of the Galaxy S8.

The OnePlus 5 camera is expected to be dual sensors, though. That has been confirmed severally, both in leaked renders including the leaked box casing for the device which has it written on the body. Also, recently spotted camera samples that were reportedly captured by the OnePlus 5 points at a dual camera feature. One of the images came out as a black and white shot which indicates that OnePlus 5 may come with dual cameras and one of its lenses will be able to capture images in monochrome. The presence of a monochrome sensor in a dual rear camera module can assist in detecting lighting conditions in a better way. Hence, it will be able to shoot accurate photos just as we can see on this leaked night photo. The night sky maintains its darkness and yet the camera was still able to pick the tiny stars and capture the building and shadows with an impressively high level of contrast and clarity. OnePlus’ upcoming flagship is tipped to launch this month and as if to lend credence to that speculation (which may be true), leaks and details of the OnePlus 5 continue to hit the stands every now and then. CEO Liu Zuotu, who seems to be the main leak source for the OP5, recently shared a screenshot of the device running Hydrogen OS which is the custom ROM for the China version. Also recently, we brought you details of OnePlus’ intention to select 10 reviewers who would test the OnePlus 5’s camera.

OnePlus may have selected the 10 reviewers already because we have spotted a tech blogger on Weibo who shared some details of the camera. Weibo usually identifies the device a user is blogging with and in this case, the blogger was shown to be using the not yet launched OnePlus 5, meaning he’s likely one of the testers. OnePlus has been teasing the OP5’s camera prowess and the user agrees that the flagship packs a powerful camera which he likened to that of the Samsung Galaxy S8.

The OnePlus 5 user did not reveal if the device utilises a dual camera setup or not since the Galaxy S8 doesn’t have dual cameras. But another popular tipster pointed out that we should refer to the iPhone 7 Plus for the double shot layout of the OnePlus flagship. The iPhone 7 Plus is Apple’s latest and first dual camera phone with a wide angle and telephoto sensors. The OnePlus 5 is rumored to come with a similar configuration.

Other rumoured details of the OP5 includes a Snapdragon 835 chip, 6GB of RAM, front fingerprint sensor, and lots more. The device is rumoured to launch precisely on June 15, that is just 10 days away. Do you think that is possible?

OnePlus‘ fans have a golden opportunity to test run the amazing OnePlus 5 flagship before it hits the road. Though this is not as spicy as Google’s recent contest where fans had the chance to take home thousands of dollars, it is also not as painstaking and it’s much less involving. OnePlus is giving to 10 lucky reviewers, the new OnePlus 5 for little involvement.

All you have to do is to first follow OnePlus on Instagram (@oneplustech), then submit three photographs from your Instagram account snapped with any smartphone. The OnePlus design team will contact you if you are a lucky winner. Please note that selection is based on the best picture thus everything about your picture comes into play from the camera quality of the phone you used to the environment, lighting and background of your photo. The eventual winners will get the new OnePlus 5 smartphone.

The plot of this OnePlus contest is closely related to the attention the company is giving to the OnePlus 5 camera and they even sourced for help from DxO who created DxOMark camera benchmark system. It appears that the company is quite confident of the OnePlus 5 camera that they went public with their plans with the OnePlus 5 camera. “We want to bring a device that’s truly tailored and perfected for photography lovers,” wrote OnePlus on the competition page.

Already, OnePlus has recorded over 15,000 applications as at the time of reporting. To keep yourself abreast with the proceedings of this contest, visit OnePlus.net/lab.

The post 10 Lucky Reviewers Will Get The OnePlus 5 Before It’s Launched. Interested? appeared first on Gizmochina.

We already knew it was going to be called the OnePlus 5. OnePlus is aware we know already, but since it has been dropping teasers for its new flagship, they’ve never called it by that name. Not until today.

In an official tweet via the company’s official twitter account earlier today, we finally see them address their next flagship as the OnePlus 5. And that is just half of the news.

We're proud to announce that we'll be working with @DxOLabs to improve the photography experience of the #OnePlus5. https://t.co/rccJWStjQi pic.twitter.com/TwQ3fCdblt

— OnePlus (@oneplus) May 18, 2017

The tweet was actually to announce that OnePlus will be “working with DxO Labs to improve the photography experience of the OnePlus 5”. We actually wish they had used the phrase “camera performance” in place of photography experience so we can bicker about if that was a subtle hint that it would have a single rear camera. Anyway, the post still leaves us in the dark about the camera configuration though.

For those of you who do not know about DxO Labs, the company has been involved in the advancement of photography for over a decade. They are best known for the photography benchmark, DxOMark. As at this moment, the king of DxOMark is the HTC U 11 whose release ousted the former champion, the Google Pixel.

See this partnership between DxO Labs and OnePlus in the same light as Huawei’s partnership with Leica but instead of working with a camera manufacturing company, OnePlus is working with one that sets the standard for camera performance. Smart move OnePlus.

So what should we expect from OnePlus? Whether it comes with dual rear cameras or not, the OnePlus 5 will have an exceptional camera. It might not be the best but it should be able to hold its own against the best.
