Gionee W919 Is A Premium Leather-Clad Flip Smartphone, Expected To Launch Soon

After announcing eight smartphones last month with the so-called bezel-less display, Gionee is now gearing up to launch a new phone — Gionee W919, featuring a clamshell design.

Some details of Gionee‘s upcoming smartphone with model number W919 has been leaked online through the phone’s listing on China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology website. This is required for the network permission and since it has been almost two months, we are expecting to phone to get launched soon.

Gionee W919 featured

Given the model number W919, we expect this phone to be the successor of Gionee W909 which was launched in China in March 2016. However, the W919 will come with a new design. While the W909 had a rectangular slab-like design, the upcoming phone features a triangular design at the top and bottom.

Just like its predecessor, this one too features two displays — one on the outside and one on the inside, above the T9 keypad with physical buttons. The leaked images further suggest that the phone’s back panel will have a cowhide leather material, hinting that the phone will sit in the premium segment. There is a single camera sensor on the back, with dual-tone LED flash. Just below the camera module, there sits a fingerprint sensor for added security.

While the listing does not reveal the specifications of Gionee W919, it is known that it will have dual-SIM capabilities. Previous leak through TENAA listing reveals that the phone will come with two 4.2-inch HD displays and will be powered by a 2.5GHz octa-core processor of unknown make, along with 6GB of RAM. The storage capacity on board will be 128GB, which will be further expandable up to 256GB via a microSD card.

Master Lu Benchmark’s Best AI Smartphones Dominated By Kirin 970 Phones

The year 2017 saw smartphones trending on two fronts, one is the full-screen design while the second is the presence of artificial intelligence. The full-screen bezel-less design was absolutely the most prominent trend, making it difficult to keep track of the number of full-screen models that have so far been launch. However, artificial intelligence is yet to be adopted extensively and so, benchmark outfit Master Lu has helped us out with a list of the best AI smartphones around presently. Actually, the list is for 2017 AI-packing smartphones but since this year, we are yet to see any major smartphone launch so the ranking is still intact.Artificial intelligence smartphones

The top 10 smartphones with Artificial Intelligence (AI) is dominated by Huawei with two of its models sitting at the first and second spots. The two Huawei smartphones on the list feature the Kirin 970 chipset with its dedicated NPU bringing AI capabilities to the smartphones. The Huawei Mate 10 sits at the top of the charts with 233 points and is closely followed by the Honor V10 with 232 points. Apple’s iPhone X, powered by the A11 bionic processor and the iPhone 8 Plus occupy the third and fourth positions with 184 and 181 points respectively. It is worthy of note that the gap between the Kirin 970-driven Huawei models and the A11-powered Apple models is more than 20%. That shows the level of AI capabilities the Kirin 970 chip packs. Perhaps, Qualcomm’s next-gen Snapdragon 845 would be able to challenge the Kirin 970 but for now, its AI feature seems to be in a class of its own.

Best Selling Smartphones In 2017 In China Saw Only One Xiaomi Phone

Counterpoint has released its top 10 smartphone ranking for the Chinese market in 2017. The ranking contains the top-grossing smartphones all throughout last year in China and the chart contains some surprises. The major surprise is that despite the resurgence of Xiaomi, only one of its Redmi models found its way into the chart. On the other hand, three OPPO models were contenders in the group of ten.

Interestingly, OPPO R9S emerged as the top-grossing smartphone with a 3% share of the market and it is closely followed by the iPhone 7 Plus with 2.8%. Vivo X9 was rated the third-highest grossing smartphone in 2017 with a 2.7% share of the market. Oppo then hit the ranking again with the A57 occupying the fourth spot. Despite the supposedly poor standing of Apple in China, the iPhone 7 joined its Plus-sized counterpart on the list, in the fifth spot. OPPO R11 is the third OPPO model on the list, sitting at number six with a 2.3% share of the market. Vivo Y66 happens to be the second Vivo model that made the charts. It is closely followed by the Honor 8 Lite at number seven. Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X emerged as the only Mi brand that made the list and it sits at the 9th spot. Finally, the Honor 6X completes the top 10 ranking with a 1.7% shales of the market.

In addition, of all the brands, Apple is the only foreign brand on the list. That is an indication of Apple’s strong popularity in China. Despite the flurry of smartphones, Xiaomi launched this year, we are at a fix why only one Xiaomi model is on the list. Not even the Mi 6 or Mi Nte 3 or the budget Redmi Note 5A.

Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ Will Have Same Battery Capacities As Predecessors

Fans of Samsung are definitely counting down to the release of the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+. Most of the specs are already known, save for the battery capacity until now.

The leak comes from ANATEL, Brazil’s equivalent of the FCC, where it appears the phones were getting certified. Screenshots provided show that the Galaxy S9 will have a 3000mAh battery while the bigger Galaxy S9+ will have a 3500mAh battery.

Do the above figures sound familiar? Yes, and that is because those are the exact capacities for the Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+. This shouldn’t come as much of a surprise as earlier rumors have revealed that the differences between the new Galaxy S9/S9+ and the Galaxy S8/S8+ will not be much.

While the battery capacities and screen sizes have stayed the same, there are still a number of features to be excited for. Both new phones will be getting new cameras with variable apertures. The S9+ will even be getting an extra camera sensor.

There is also the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 and Exynos 9810. Both chips bring improved performance over last year’s models.

Snapdragon 652 Revisited: Does It Make Sense To Use A Two Year Old Chipset In A $500 HTC Device in 2018?

Back in December 2015, Qualcomm announced that it was going to rename its new SD620 and SD618 chipsets as Snapdragon 652 and Snapdragon 650 processors. The rebranding made sense, since these two chipsets were much more powerful than its other SD600 series counterparts. The first SD652 smartphones started appearing around early 2016 and since then we have seen an influx of solid mid-rangers powered by this chip. In fact, even in 2017, there were a few smartphones with SD652, like the standard edition of the Nubia Z17 Mini.

sd652

The chipset was quite popular among mid-rangers, but that was more than a year ago. In 2018, the Snapdragon 652 is nearly two years old and technically, it’s three generations old now: succeeded first by SD653 (October 2016) and then by SD660 (May 2017).

So, despite its popularity back in the day, does it make sense to use Snapdragon 652 inside a $500 HTC U11 Eyes upper mid-ranger announced in 2018?

HTC U11 Eyes

To be honest, using Snapdragon 653 would have made more sense. It’s slightly faster, features a new generation X9 LTE modem, and is just over a year old. It’s like a refreshed SD652, with small upgrades. The performance is slightly better given its higher clock speed, and it scores around 90,000 points vs 78,000 by SD652 in the AnTuTu benchmark. Similar difference can be found in other benchmark scores as well.

Ideally, for a upper mid-range device like the HTC U11 Eyes, the Snapdragon 660 would have been perfect. But the company likely skipped on the chipset in order to save cost. Another possible option would have been the SD636, which although comes from the lower SD63X series, is quite powerful thanks to its 8 x Kryo 260 custom cores (same ones found on the SD660 chip) clocked at 1.8GHz. It’s much more advanced as well, featuring Qualcomm’s aptX codec technology, Spectra 160 ISP, X12 LTE modem (Cat. 13), and manufactured on a much efficient 14nm node. In all counts, the SD636 would have been another option that was better than the SD652.

For a tech enthusiast, seeing Snapdragon 652 on a 2018 upper mid-range smartphone is really a disappointment. But end of the day, for a regular smartphone user, SD652 could be sufficient. With the right UI optimisations, you should still see all the features work smoothly, with minimal lag. It may not be very quick in opening apps as other 2017 / 18 smartphones, but it sure has enough firepower to get the job done. Agreed, SD653 would have been better, but the difference wouldn’t have been significant. Maybe that’s why HTC didn’t care to use an updated chipset on its new model. Luckily, the battery is quite large, so despite SD652 being manufactured on a larger 28nm node, battery life should be good.

So if you are not a tech enthusiast, I guess you could live with the Snapdragon 652 inside an upper mid-range smartphone like the U11 Eyes. Moreover, other features of the phone like IP67 certification, Edge Sense, Dual Front cameras, HTC U11’s Rear sensor, and Android Oreo definitely helps in making the SD652 powered U11 Eyes likeable. You can read more about the HTC U11 Eyes in our launch article.

Nearly three years after its release, it is getting a successor.

The Xbox Elite 2 Controller is said to come with a built-in lithium battery. The original Elite Controller uses 2 AA batteries. So this is a huge upgrade. The battery will reportedly last for 20 hours on a single charge and can be recharged via a USB-C port that replaces the micro USB port.

Another big upgrade coming to the Xbox Elite 2 Controller is Bluetooth support. Even with all its features the original Elite Controller doesn’t have Bluetooth. Notwithstanding, some of Meizu’s phones also did not sell as much as expected last year, like the dual-screen Pro 7 and Pro 7 Plus even. Things later turned around with the launch of its first Snapdragon-powered phone, the M6 Note.

Korean Firm Develops Self-Healing Material That Restores Cracks & Could Be On Future Phones

The advent of smartphones brought with it a great chance of cracked screen as a result of the large surface area which the display now occupies. This is even more complicated by the adoption of the full-screen design which sees the bezels getting reduced. Somewhere in the world right now, someone has just dropped his or her phone accidentally and the screen has shattered. But this may soon be a thing of the past as a team of Korean researchers have developed a new self-healing material dubbed “Elastomer,” which can restore dents and cracks within 30 minutes.Elastomer

Ordinarily, an elastomer is a polymer with viscoelasticity (having both viscosity and elasticity) and very weak inter-molecular forces, generally having low Young’s modulus and high failure strain compared with other materials. The new material comes with double the highest level of existing tensile strength which means it is resistant to breaking under tension. This has been a problem with self-healing materials in the past. The Elastomer is also able to heal itself under room temperature and has a tensile strength good enough to make it commercially viable. The team also disclosed that the new material can be used as a protective layer on mobile devices and it automatically restore any outside cracks within 30 minutes.
