Following Qualcomm’s 520 million Yuan suit against Meizu, the Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Meizu, Li Nan, says he agrees intellectual property use should be paid for and his company is going to do so but disagrees on them wanting an unequal treatment. While admitting that Meizu indeed used Qualcomm patents, he mentioned that the use of the patents still hasn’t broken any Chinese law.
Mr. Nan says, all his company wants is a fair platform to negotiate the payments and eventually pay the royalties to Qualcomm. Qualcomm will have none of that as it feels that Chinese manufacturers are getting a huge discount compared to manufacturers from other countries.
The San-Francisco chip maker believes that Meizu’s refusal to pay presents an unequal relationship between Qualcomm and other manufacturers as it makes it appear that the chip maker is having difficulties collecting royalties from license partners. Mr. Nan, however disagrees with the statement.
Whichever way it goes, Meizu definitely wants the case settled out of court.
What do you think? Should this case be settled out of the court?
Huawei has been teasing the upcoming Honor 8 smartphone as one of the best-looking phone in its class. In fact, in the recent teaser for the device, Huawei calls the Honor 8 “Beauty out of the ordinary”. Up till now, we didn’t have any real renders of the device, but now, the phone has passed through the TENAA certification website, which reveals most of the specs as well as the design of the handset.
First of all, as predicted, the Honor 8 will use a double glass design with a metal frame. To be honest, in the images, the phone doesn’t look anything out of the ordinary, but we will have to reserve our judgment till we see the device in real life. It’s going to be compact and thin, and the basic design seems to be a continuation of its previous generation models. You can also see a round fingerprint sensor at the back along with the dual camera setup.
As for the specs, the Huawei Honor 8 will come with a 5.2-inch 1080p display. Under the hood, the phone features a 2.3GHz processor, which should be the octa-core Kirin 950 chip. There will be multiple variants of the phone, as spotted a few hours back (FRD-TL100, FRD-DL00, FRD-AL100, FRD-AL10) and these variants will differ in network connectivity support (a couple of these support all networks in China) as well as storage. There will be 3GB RAM + 32GB, 4GB + 32GB and 4GB + 64GB storage variants. The phone will come with Android 6 pre-installed and dual card dual standby support with an infrared port as well.
As for the camera, it should be the same as the Honor V8. So the upcoming Honor 8 will feature 12MP dual cameras at the back and a single 8MP sensor up front. The dimensions are: 145.5 × 71.0 × 7.45 mm and the weight: 153 grams.
The Honor 8 should be positioned right below the Honor V8 flagship series. So, the pricing of the base model (3GB + 32GB) is expected to start at 1999 Yuan ($306).
IFA 2016 which will be held in Berlin starts from September 2 and ends on September 7. This means that there is still a few months left for the event. However, that didn’t stop Huawei from sending out invites for a launch event, just a day before the IFA.
IFA has always been an important event for Huawei since for the past few years, we have been meeting the new Mate series flagships at the event. The company announced the Mate 7 in September IFA 2014, and last year, we saw a new flagship, the Mate S at IFA 2015. So, this year, we can expect to see a brand new Mate smartphone at IFA 2016. However, considering that last year, the Mate S was announced at this event and the Mate 8 was released only a couple of months later, we wonder whether that will be the case this year as well.
Huawei could unveil the successor to the Mate S, and there are some things which support this possibility. An upgraded Mate S, which could be called as the Mate S2 may debut with Huawei’s new version of Force Touch which is said to come with more functions. But we also have to take into account that Huawei Mate S wasn’t really a big success for the company. So, it’s still doubtful whether this Chinese giant will update the lineup this year.
Another possibility is that, instead of waiting till the very end of 2016, Huawei could unleash its big guns, the Huawei Mate 9 at this event. This would be an ideal time for the launch, since then, the phone can take on the Galaxy Note 7 (another phablet flagship launching in Aug this year) and the iPhone 7 and 7 Plus which should be announced a few weeks later.
Anyway, it’s too early to speculate on the device that will meet us at the event. So, let’s wait for more details in the coming weeks.
We have been hearing rumors about a dual camera smartphone from LeEco. While the company is yet to acknowledge the existence of such a device, recently a new smartphone with LeEco’s logo at the back was spotted. Well, what we saw in the picture was just a rear shell, but it did reveal a lot of things about the device.
From the image, it looks like LeEco is working on a dual camera flagship model. We can clearly see the new LeEco logo at the back, which gave away its identity. Further, the dual camera placement is actually quite interesting, since the company seems to have placed the cameras and the flash to slightly resemble a human face. Further, just below this setup is an opening which should be for the fingerprint sensor. LeEco likes fingerprint sensors at the back of the phone, hence, this design is in line with the company’s design philosophy. From the image, the back shell seems to be made out of metal.
Another highlight of the new LeEco smartphone is the position of the antenna lines. As you can see in the image, the white antenna lines are placed on the top and the bottom. Now isn’t this a bit too familiar? Yes, it is! This is the same antenna design used by Meizu Pro 6 and considering the renders we have seen recently, even the iPhone 7 is expected to use this same design.
Specs wise, we have very limited information, however, there have been reports about a powerful flagship from LeEco as soon as tomorrow! The specs are said to be top-notch including Snapdragon 821 chip, 8GB RAM, and dual cameras. While we are not sure whether LeEco will unveil this beast at tomorrow’s MWC Shanghai event, if that doesn’t happen, then the phone should be released sometime later this year.
OPPO R9 is doing very well for the company, selling over 7 million units of the device in a few months of launch. However, it looks like this best selling model will soon see a successor, as Taiwanese media reports indicate that OPPO is preparing to launch the OPPO R9S which should succeed the R9 later this year.
It is said that Qualcomm has bagged the rights to supply processors for the OPPO R9S model. The chipmaker is said to start shipping the chipset in August this year, which means the official launch of the new model is just a few months away. The company is also said to continue with the same design philosophy that worked wonders with the R9, i.e. a thin metal body design. However, since Qualcomm has reportedly got the chipset rights for the R9S, it would be interesting to see which chip is used inside this new device.
OPPO R9 Plus came with Snapdragon 652, but it was a larger and a costlier version of the R9. With the OPPO R9S, the company could either upgrade the chip to SD652 or maybe use a newer chip like the Snapdragon 625. Also, if the rumored OPPO Find 9 is not releasing anytime soon, then OPPO may even upgrade the chip to Snapdragon 821 inside this R9S. This is possible because the phone will have to take on powerful models like the Mi Note 2, LeEco flagship, Mate 9 etc in the second half of the year.
Another interesting feature said to end up on the OPPO R9S is the fast charging technology. It looks like OPPO could use the Super VOOC fast charging tech that charges a 2500mAh battery in 15 minutes inside its new device. If that’s the case, charging a phone won’t be an issue anymore.
There are rumors about OPPO releasing a dual camera phone, but the setup would ideally end up in a top-end flagship lineup like the OPPO Find 9.
Last year ZUK, which is a Lenovo-backed company, released a rather compelling Z1 model. This year, we have the Z2, a phone, which costs just above $300 but it has some killer specs. Learn more in our full review.
As far as design goes, it has changed quite a bit if we compare it to the ZUK Z1.
Now we have a rather compact phone, which uses a very high quality and sturdy metal frame around the device. I lovethe fact that all the buttons and a dual SIM card tray are on the right and all other stuff is on the bottom. Thus, other sides of the phone look clean.
The sound quality from the loudspeaker is pretty good but nothing we haven’t heard from similarly priced phones.
Also, we have Gorilla Glass 4 on the front and rear. A great thing is that the phone has some sort of anti-fingerprint coating and it does its job very well.
We have a 5” 1080p display, which is nice and sharp but it could be slightly brighter for a better sunlight legibility.
An 8MP shooter is here for selfies along with a notification LED light on the top.
On the bottom, we have just one physical home button but it has tons of features. First of all, you can physically press it and it takes you home. Also, you can tap it and it acts as a back button or swipe it from left to right if you e.g. want to access your recent apps. Also, the button is highly customizable and you can assign different tasks. I have to say that this is one of the best home button implementations I’ve ever seen.
Last but not least we have a fingerprint scanner, which is accurate and it reads a fingerprint straight from the standby mode.
On the back, we have a 13MP shooter with f/2.2 aperture and a single LED flash.
Overall, the phone is well-built, it feels nice in the hand and it sports some flagship-worthy materials in the construction.
ZUK Z2 Review: HARDWARE, PERFORMANCE, BENCHMARKS
ZUK Z2 sports some flagship-grade specs. It has a Snapdragon 820 chip, 4GB of RAM and 64GB of on-board storage without the microSD card slot.
As you may have guessed, the phone can handle anything you throw at it without a sweat. All the games ran almost perfectly on the highest graphics. However, the phone does quite warm on the top portion of the device but there are no overheating warnings or anything that could impair the performance.
ZUK Z2 Review: USER INTERFACE
As for UI, our Chinese review unit ships with a highly customized ZUI, which is built on top of Android 6.0. As it has become usual to the Chinese implementations of Android, there is no app tray, the icons are redesigned and there are tons of features, tweaks and customization options.
Just to name a few, you can swipe from the bottom to open up quick settings toggles, which are highly customizable. Also, you can select from a variety of fonts, skins or use the integrated fitness tracking app, which I found to be pretty accurate at least when it comes to counting steps.
Most importantly, the user interface runs fast and fluid and the only shortcoming is that the phone ships without Google services pre-installed but it took me just a few minutes to install it manually. Keep in mind that resellers usually install Google services and multi-languages for you, so you don’t need to deal with that yourself.
ZUK Z2 Review: CAMERA
When it comes to the camera, we have a few shooting modes but there is no manual mode to take a full control of the images you take. Also, there are some basic settings to play with. In addition, the phone can take pictures very fast, which is probably the most important aspect for most users. Finally, the device triggers HDR mode automatically.
ZUK Z2 Review: IMAGE QUALITY
ZUK Z2 can take some nice looking daylight images with a good amount of detail, accurate looking colors and sharpness.
The camera starts struggling in lower-lit situations as the images have quite a lot of noise and less detail. Still, you can get some usable images out of this phone.
The 4k video looks really good for a $300 phone. However, the footage could have less noise and compression, and the green color of the grass looks oversaturated. See a video review for a video sample.
An 8MP selfie snapper can take some decent looking selfies for social media needs.
Overall, ZUK Z2 does not have a perfect camera but it is definitely one of the better cameras in a $300 phone.
ZUK Z2 Review: CONNECTIVITY
GPS test (indoors)
I didn’t have any connectivity issues with the phone as the signal reception was good and the call quality was decent. Also, the Wifi worked fine and the GPS was accurate.
ZUK Z2 Review: BATTERY LIFE
The ZUK Z2 ships with 3500mAh built-in battery and it performs great.
I could constantly get over 5 hours of screen-on time on a mixed use, which involved using camera, browsing the web, a bit of gaming and so on.
The phone ships with a fast charger and I was able to fully charge the phone in 1 hour and 30 mins.
ZUK Z2 Review: CONCLUSIONS
So, there you have it, ZUK Z2. The device costs just over $300 and this is actually one of the best deals at the moment.
The phone sports a familiar but nice looking design with excellent build quality and the device is very compact due to its 5” display.
Also, this phone is very powerful and it can easily handle all the latest games. In addition, the UI runs fast, the phone has 64GB of storage as standard and the camera is pretty good.
However, the display brightness could be higher to assure a better sunlight legibility. Also, the low-light camera performance could be better.
All in all, ZUK Z2 is a great phone. In fact, it is definitely one of the best offerings for the price and it does not have any major shortcomings that could be a deal-breaker.

Elephone has a pretty good sports camera lineup, with the Elecam Explorer Pro right on top. The company released the Explorer Pro camera earlier this year and the camera managed to get pretty good response from customers. This was mainly because of its cheap pricing and quality video shooting capability.
Now, Elephone has just revealed to us that the company will soon release the Elecam Explorer Elite version. The major highlight of this camera will be its price. Expect it to be cheaper than the Pro version that retails for $99 via various online retailers.
In case you are wondering, the Elecam Explorer Elite will get the same top-end chip inside, NTK96660 that comes inside the Pro version will the ability to shoot 4K 24 fps videos as well. However, it will not feature the built-in voice broadcast motion DV feature that was found in the Pro variant. Also, the camera sensor on board will be Sony IMX078 instead of the IMX117.
Well, that’s all we know about this Elecam Explorer Elite model. We will also like to note that Elephone says that the Elite version will be the king of cost performance motion camera market. Let’s wait and watch.
Google has always partnered up with OEMs to release Nexus-branded smartphones in the market. While the Nexus lineup is built with inputs from Google, it looks like the Mountain View giant is now working on its own smartphone for greater control.
According to a new report, Google seems to be preparing its own smartphone to take on the Apple iPhone in the market. It is said that “Google wants more control over design, manufacturing, and software”. Up till now, the company’s reach has been limited to software, but if this turns out to be true, Google soon could make its entry into the smartphone hardware. While this won’t be the company’s first hardware product (remember Google Pixel C?), it will be the first self-made smartphone.
This move by the company could be a result of the fragmentation of the Android platform. There are millions of smartphones in the market today that’s based on Google’s Android OS, however, most of them feature a tweaked version by their respective manufacturer. This has adversely affected the consistency of the software on different models as well as the adoption rate of the new versions of Android.
With Google’s self-made smartphone, the company will have greater control over the software as well as the hardware, much like the Apple iPhone. This would be the best move to take on the iPhone models which are usually considered more stable and premium than other Android handsets.
Previously, Google’s CEO Sundar Pichai had hinted that the company plans to add some new features to the Android Nexus lineup. We could see such special features on the new Google smartphone as well.
The report states that this Google made phone could release by the end of this year, which means we won’t have to wait for too long to meet this iPhone killer.
So, what do you think about a Google-made Android flagship?
Xiaomi’s MIUI OS is one of the popular ROMs available in the market right now and all Xiaomi smartphones come with the OS pre-installed. The company released the brand new MIUI 8 OS about two months ago and the OS is already in beta. The final version should be up and ready in a few weeks, after which you can expect Xiaomi phones to start receiving the update.
The new MIUI 8 version brings a lot of visual changes, and now, the colors on the OS change according to the month or even the weather. The company has included more young colors to make it look more vibrant and alive. There are a lot of feature additions as well, and today, we received information that the MIUI 8 will also add split screen multitasking.
In fact, MIUI seems to have confirmed that split-screen multitasking will soon come to MIUI 8. However, it doesn’t look like the feature will be available in the first release. So, we don’t know exactly when the feature will be available to the users, but it should be sometime later in the future minor updates to the ROM.
Other features of the new MIUI 8 include recording live screen as well as support for fingerprint payments, like its own wallet service as well as Alipay (in the future).
MIUI 8 brings a lot of new features, and all of them have been detailed in this article. Check it out for more details.
The big players are already into VR: Google, HTC, Samsung, Facebook, and OnePlus, to name a few, so one would expect Xiaomi should have joined the party too, even before Google listed them as one of the manufacturers that they partnered with to make Daydream ready smartphones during this year’s I/O conference.
Seems they already did, because today we found a dedicated Weibo account for Xiaomi’s VR project with the username @XiaomiVR.
Xiaomi’s GM, Tang Mu, stated that the company will release its VR headset in August and but there’s no information regarding the price and the specifications. We also do not know if the headset will work for current Xiaomi devices or if it is a step towards the daydream project.
We sure will update you when we get more details about the device.
Meizu has released an official statement saying that the company has always attached importance to the protection of intellectual property and has never refused to pay for legal patents. The statement also says that the company has had multiple talks with Qualcomm and are disappointed that Qualcomm has taken them to court. Meizu says it will hold a press conference on Tuesday, 28th of June regarding the lawsuit.
Vivo will take the wraps off the Vivo X7 as well as Vivo X7 Plus smartphones on June 30 in China. The company has revealed some of the details of the smartphone via teasers in the past few weeks, but now, we have almost everything about the device, thanks to its TENAA certification. For those who don’t know, TENAA is the Chinese network certification website and is the equivalent of FCC in the US. While TENAA usually reveals the pictures of the device as well, for the Vivo X7, we didn’t find any images. So, let’s take a look at the phone’s specs.
The Vivo X7 will come with a 5.2-inch 1080p display up front. Under the hood, the phone will feature an octa-core chip clocked at 1.8GHz. Vivo has already confirmed that this chip will be the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652. Further, there will be 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage on board. Note that TENAA confirms that the phone will not have a MicroSD card slot. Coming to the camera, up front, you will get a 16MP shooter, however at the back, there will be a 13MP sensor. The setup is very similar to the one used on the OPPO R9 flagship. Given that the R9 is selling so well in China, looks like Vivo decided to take some pointers from the device.
Unfortunately, even though we are nearing the second half of 2016, Vivo X7 is said to come with Android 5.1 on board. The battery will be of 2930mAh inside a 7.24mm body. There will be at least two colors available — gold and rose gold.
The company will announce the X7 along with its larger sibling, X7 Plus on Thursday. So, stay tuned for more details.
A few days back, we heard that Huawei was going to announce the Honor 8 flagship early July. In fact, we even had a date, i.e. July 5, which was said to be the release date of the device. Looks like this information might be true, as Honor has started teasing the smartphone. Considering the timing of the teaser, July 5 release could be possible.
In the teaser, Huawei is calling the Honor 8 “Beauty Out of the Ordinary”. The past rumors about the device have revealed that Honor 8 was going to be a very attractive smartphone. And it looks like the company has roped in a celebrity to promote the launch of the new flagship device. This is an important device for Honor since it’s going to be cheaper than the Honor V8 announced a couple of months back, yet it would feature specs good enough to take on other mid-range flagships in the market.
The phone is said to come with a double glass design and a metal frame which will reportedly make it look highly attractive. Further, the bezels on the screen are also said to be thin, thereby increasing its beauty up front. As for the specs, the Honor 8 will reportedly feature Kirin 955 octa-core chipset with 4GB RAM and three memory variants 32GB / 64GB and 128GB. The screen will be compact, measuring 5.2-inches with 1080p resolution. Like the Honor V8 and the Huawei P9, the Honor 8 is also expected to come with dual 12MP cameras at the back. But we are not sure whether there will be any differences in the module as compared to the V8 flagship.
Other features of the Honor 8 include an infrared port, 3200mAh battery, fingerprint sensor, and USB Type-C. The four expected variants, — 32GB without NFC, 32GB with NFC, 64GB and 128GB should be priced at 1999 Yuan ($308), 2199 Yuan ($334), 2499 Yuan ($380) and 2799 ($380) respectively. The top-end version should bump up the resolution to 2K.
Imoo is a new brand from BBK Electronics, the parent company that owns OnePlus, Oppo, and Vivo.
BBK has said the new line will be focused on making educational smartphones, but these images don’t show if there’s any special hardware that makes the phone stand out as an educational device. What we have is one of the renders featuring what looks like an app for learning English.
This still leave us with unanswered questions such as how the phone is going to achieve this “educational status”? Is Imoo going to create new apps or will they be using what is currently available in the Play Store? Will it be building a modified version of android like what Fuhu did with the Nabi line of tablets?
We sure do hope Imoo answers these questions in the coming weeks.
The images we’ve laid our hands upon are that of the Vivo X7 and as you can see the phone does look nice against the selected backgrounds.
The phone which is aimed at selfie lovers will feature a 16MP front facing camera, a 5.2” FHD screen, a Snapdragon 652 processor, a fingerprint scanner embedded in the home button, 4GB RAM, and a generous 64GB built-in storage for storing those gorgeous selfies.
The price is still a closely guarded secret but expect it not to be cheap as Vivo says the X7 is part of a premium mid-range line.

UMi has been releasing a number of interesting smartphones in the past few months. The company’s UMi Super flagship turned out to be a pretty good device and in fact, we are giving away a unit for free. You can check out the giveaway from here. Now, UMi has just released the UMi London smartphone. UMi’s smartphones have always had a key selling factor and with the UMi London, the company is attracting customers who would like to have a rugged yet beautiful smartphone. Although there are rugged phones already available, most of them look ugly. So, if you want something that will last a fall on the concrete, UMi London could be a good choice.
So, what makes this phone rugged as compared to other smartphones? Well, UMi reveals that the phone comes with several technologies that help it survive a 6-meter drop. The phone comes with DG Twin Shield Tech developed by the company which consists of:
Dual 2.5D glass protection which is stronger than single glass.
3M pressure absorption technology which can absorb up to 0.23mm pressure due to strong impact.
Along with its rugged body, UMi London is attractive as well. It comes with space grade aluminum alloy frame and a 4.8mm dual curve body which makes it easier to hold. The best thing about the device is its price. The phone retails at just $69.99 which is great!
You can read more about the device from here and even participate in giveaways from the following links:
If you were to conduct a survey to ask why people choose a particular brand over another, regular updates and support will most likely be the response. Personally, it is a deal breaker for me when a device doesn’t get support anymore a few months after purchase just because there’s a newer phone available (manufacturers that release new phones every month should take note). So when I see a brand that takes updates very important, I tend to give them a little more respect.
The Vernee Thor has already received two updates since its release and the company is telling their fans to prepare for a third one next week. They’ve released a change log detailing what fixes will be coming to the phone below:
Fixed the problem of proximity sensor failing under direct sunlight.
Lowered standby power consumption when cellular data, WiFi or Bluetooth is on.
Addressed potential security or storage leakage issue when WiFi or Bluetooth is on.
Enhanced 2G network access speed.
Fixed WiFi On but no internet connection when the device is far from AP.
Google Security Patch.
The Vernee Thor has a 5” HD screen, 3GB RAM, 16GB of ROM, dual SIM slots, 13MP/5MP cameras, a fingerprint scanner, runs android marshmallow, and sports a 2800mAh battery.
Following the launch of Umi’s latest flagship device, the Umi Super, the company has not left any stone unturned in a bid to win over more customers with the 4GB RAM metal beast. The latest trick they’ve pulled is releasing a Euro 2016 Edition which sees the phone clad in Royal Blue. And trust me when I say it is a beauty to behold.
Apart from the visible change to the exterior, the limited edition of the super will feature the same specifications as the original version such as a 5.5” FHD screen, 4GB of RAM, an octa-core Helio P10 processor, 32GB of ROM and a 4000mAh battery which charges from 0 to 75% in 30 minutes. There is also no mention of any added changes on the software side or accessories part, similar to what Samsung did with the Samsung S6 Iron Man Edition which has a dedicated Iron Man theme and a wireless charger styled to look like Tony Stark’s Arc Reactor.
The company has however not stated if this limited edition will be bearing the $179 price tag as the original or if it will be priced higher, and how many units will be available for purchase. We are however sure that it’ll be out of stock in a very short time after release.
