The full measure of the US sanction regime against Huawei has been reflected in the latest shipment numbers for the company as shown by data released by Omdia. Huawei’s phone shipments for 2021 had declined to 35 million units, which is a massive 81.6% drop from its 2020 numbers, while its market share globally dropped from 15% in 2020 to just about 3% in 2021. Interestingly, however, Huawei’s former brand Honor sold about 40 million units, which placed it in 8th position globally ahead of Huawei.

Back in mid-2020 when the US embargo kicked in, Huawei was on the top echelon of the market, second only to Apple. It declined slightly at the end of 2020 to the third position, but its present 9th position indicates that the impact was massively felt in its smartphone segment. Huawei had been cut off from critical supplies for the software component of its smartphones and some hardware, especially important chips. Being put on the US Entity List was therefore a fundamental factor for Huawei’s steep decline. Huawei had continued to deny any ties with the Chinese military on the charge of being a security risk to the United States.

Samsung still maintains the lead in global smartphone shipments with 271.5 million units while Apple was second with 236.2 million units. Other strong performers were Xiaomi, Oppo, Realme, and Motorola. In terms of Q4 2021 performance, Apple outshone Samsung with its 87 million iPhones shipped, compared to Samsung’s 69.1 million units.

After getting blacklisted by the Trump administration in 2019 over national security concerns, Huwaei has been going through a tough time in the smartphone domain. And there appears to be no imminent relief as the U.S. President Joe Biden’s nominee to a post overseeing export policy on China says the Huawei ban is likely to stretch further.

Not just that, the Under Secretary of Commerce for Industry and Security, Alan Estevez has also pledged to keep a close eye on Honor Device Co to see if Huawei has parted ways with the company with an aim to create a cleaner image of Honor and evade or at least minimize the blacklist repercussions. “I’ve seen previous maneuvers by the Chinese,” testifies Estevez at a hearing of the Senate banking committee.

Huawei said it was under tremendous pressure due to the unavailability of components used for smartphone manufacturing due to the ban and therefore, has decided to sell Honor. Huawei says that it is no longer involved in any business operations or management activities of Honor and is not holding any shares as well.

It is also being reported that the Biden administration is considering the option of extending the ban to Honor after lawmakers raised valid concerns about the company in a letter to Commerce Department Secretary Gina Raimondo last month.

Huawei is going to stay on the blacklist as long as the U.S. believes it is a national security threat to them, irrespective of who stays in power. That said, Huawei will incur further losses as it is still on the lookout for alternatives to American components.

Huawei is calling it a limited edition model and there are some features that really make it stand out from the crowd. This is also the first dual curved smartphone from the company, making it special. But will you be willing to spend 1395 Euros for this beast? Yes, you heard it right! That’s the official price tag of the Porshe Design, which translates closely to $1547. So, let’s take a look at what you get at this crazy price.

First of all, as you may have guessed already, the Huawei Mate 9 Porsche Design is crafted by the popular Porsche Design studio. You get a dual curved flexible AMOLED display on the front. To make things symmetrical, the back is also curved, taking the minimum thickness of the phone to just 3mm. You get the Porsche Design logo at the back and that’s probably why the company decided to move the fingerprint sensor to the front.

Now, note that this edition comes with a smaller screen of 5.5-inches as compared to the 5.9-inches on the Mate 9 regular edition. But the AMOLED display will look amazing thanks to its 2K resolution. The processor is the same as the regular version — Kirin 960 but the RAM and ROM are upgraded to 6GB and 256GB respectively. The camera is also the same setup as the regular version — 20MP + 12MP with Leica branding. Also, note that the battery is still 4000mAh despite the reduction in screen size.

The phone has a 5.5” 1080p display, which uses the LCD technology and it is pretty sharp and vibrant. Also, it is bright enough to ensure a good sunlight legibility.

The Nova Plus sports a familiar premium design we’ve seen from Huawei. It’s made out of metal, except for those plastic top and bottom parts for antennas.

Also, the phone has nice and tactile metal buttons.

While the device is not the smallest around, it is pretty comfortable to hold in the hand.

The loudspeaker sits on the bottom and the quality of sound is pretty good even if we compare it with some flagship smartphones.

We have a 16MP camera with f/2.0 aperture, OIS, and dual-led flash. A great thing that the camera can finally shoot 4k videos.

The Huawei phones have been usually great when it comes to fingerprint sensors and the Nova Plus is no exception. Also, the scanner serves as a little touchpad. My favorite features include the ability to open up the notification shade or scroll through the pictures in the gallery.

As far as selfie camera goes, we have an 8MP shooter, which sits next to the notification LED light.

We have on-screen navigation buttons and you can switch the positions of them.

As far as specs, we are looking at the upper-midrange phone. The Nova Plus ships with an octa-core Snapdragon 625 chip with the clock speeds of 2.0GHz, 3GB of RAM and 32GB of expandable storage.

The gaming performance has been good but I’ve noticed a few skipped frames when playing Asphalt 8 on the highest graphics.

A great thing is that the phone does not have any overheating issues.

The Nova Plus ships with the EMUI 4.1, which is built on top of Android 6.0.If you have used any other Huawei phone, the user interface will look exactly the same. There is no app tray, the icons look a bit cartoonish but there are quite a few added features and customization options.

Just to name a few, you can adjust the display settings, customize the navigation bar, use your knuckle to take a screenshot, easily turn on/off a convenient one-hand operation mode or use the floating dock to quickly navigate through the menus.

There are plenty of other features, settings and tweaks, so can make the phone look your own.

Most importantly, the UI performs fine on the daily basis, the phone is very fast and I didn’t have a single hiccup in 3 weeks.

The camera app is easy to use and you can quickly switch from one mode to another. Also, there are some basic settings to play with.

When it comes to the image quality, the 16MP camera can produce some great pictures that are sharp, have lots of detail and look natural as far as color reproduction goes. Also, I’m glad how the camera handles dynamic range in some tricky situations.

As far as the low-light performance, you can also take some good-looking photos. In most cases, the camera’s software does a great job with noise reduction and there is a decent amount of detail. However, there were a few shots that had a reddish tint and there was quite a bit of noise.

The 4K video quality is great but the stabilization could work a little bit better. Besides that, the footage is sharp, detailed and the continuous auto-focus feature works very well.

The 1080p footage also looks good. There is less detail if we compare it to 4k but the OIS works better. See the video review for video samples.

An 8MP selfie shooter can take some well-detailed and nice looking selfies. Also, the phone can finally shoot selfie videos at 1080p.

The phone comes with a hybrid dual-SIM card tray, which can take either 2 SIMs or 1 SIM and the microSD card.

The call quality, signal reception, GPS, Wifi and all other connectivity options work just fine.

The Huawei Nova Plus ships with 3340 mAh battery, which performs great. Even though I used the phone quite intensively, I needed to re-recharge it every two days.

That translates to over 5 hours of screen-on time, which is a great result.

Huawei Nova Plus Review: CONCLUSIONS

The Huawei Nova Plus is a solid premium midrange device.

It has a great build quality, nice and sharp display, the user interface that is fast and has tons of features and great overall performance.

Also, both cameras produce nice looking images in various lighting conditions and the battery life is great.

However, the main question is if the Nova Plus is worth the price of 430 EUR. I would say no since you can get some phones that have flagship-grade specs at this price point.

On the other hand, the Huawei Nova Plus is still a very solid phone even at this price point since it is very fast and it does not have any major shortcomings… if you do not need all the sheer power that faster processors can provide.

The Huawei Nova Plus smartphone will be available to buy in over 50 countries starting from October, although the exact date is yet to be set.

Its just been a couple of weeks since Huawei released its Honor 7 flagship in the market. However, it looks like the company is readying a new bunch of devices for launch pretty soon. As three new Huawei devices were recently spotted on the Chinese National Radio Certification website.

Unfortunately, we don’t have much details about these three handsets, except for their model numbers: ATH-AL00, RIO-AL00 and CRR-AL00. However, it is said that the first one i.e. ATH-AL00 is from the Huawei Honor family. So, if we had to guess, Honor 7 Plus would be one possible product in the series. The phone will most likely come with a CNC body. As for the CRR-AL00, the phone will come with dual SIM dual standby and will feature GSM / CDMA2000 / TD-LTE / FDD-LTE network support.

Although we expect to see Kirin 950 inside upcoming Huawei handsets, it is said that the company will most likely stick with Kirin 930 series chips for the upcoming handsets. This would increase the number of handsets running the chipset. But it would also delay the launch of the flagship Kirin 950 chip.

Anyways, if one of these models is really the Honor 7 Plus, we don’t think the company will wait too long to release the handset.

The competition in the low-end market is fierce. There are plenty of alternatives, all offering similar specs with a similar price tag. In the fight for low end market share, companies have to often operate on very low margins which affects their profitability. So, it won’t be surprising if some companies move away from this extremely competitive segment.

It looks like Huawei is going to focus on the high-end market this year as the company vice president Shao Yang recently said that Huawei aims to sell 100 million smartphones in 2015, up from 75 million shipped last year. He also added in a conference call that that the company’s high end lineup such as the Honor 6 and the Huawei P7 smartphone sales increased from 18% to 30% last year.

As a result, the company is not going to release low end smartphones in the market from now on. This is also to avoid the fierce competition in the market led by manufacturers like Xiaomi and Meizu. So, instead of competing in the low end segment, Huawei plans to release more $300+ smartphones in the market.

The company CEO Yu Chengdong said that not many smartphone manufacturers are doing well in the market except for ones like Samsung and Apple. Also, an IDC analysts recently said that Huawei has managed to make a mark in the mid-range segment thanks to value for money phones like the Honor 6 Plus. So, it makes sense why the company is going for the high end segment.

CEO Yu Chengdong also said that the company plans to grow organically rather than through acquisitions in the short term. But he did not entirely rule out a possibility of acquiring a competitor in the long run.

Some folks says that the Huawei Honor 6 is ready to compete with upcoming iPhone 6 and Samsung galaxy S6 smartphone, the two deviceis not arrive in the market.

The Huawei honor 6 is now avalable in Chinese market, so we trying to test the Honor 6 which has model number H60-Lo1, this phone is the model number which available in the Chinese market.

When we trying to running AnTuTu Benchmark test, the phone is get 37,844 points. For your information, this score is higher than HTC ONe M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone.

And we also trying to doing a second test using AnTuTu, but the score is got 37,393 points, this score has less than 200 point, so we assume that the Huawei Honor 6 is got the score between 37,000 and 38,000 points using AnTuTu.

And we trying to doing a third test using Basemark X, the Huawei Honor 6 is get 13,430 frame per second on screen and 20,692 frame per second off-screen.

While we also doing the fourth test using Vellamo benchmark test and the Huawei Honor 6 get 1,866 score points on HTML5 test while 1,111 points on Metal test.

This test is based on the system that not represent the features, while the Huawei Honor 6 is also has nice and great camera, slim and nice body design and has plenty of features that useful to use.

The new Ascend P6S is got the good score point. The new Ascend P6S is leaked from AnTuTu benchmark site and finished with a score of 22,270. The score is not bad either for a mid-range, value phone. Huawei has just released a new smartphone for middle to lower market. And they try to give a sense of the quad-core phone to the middle to lower properly as the upper middle class.

The Huawei G520. This phone is said to use a quad-core processor SoC manufactured by Mediatek. MT6589 processor is a processor based on ARM Cortex-A7 with a speed of 1.2 GHz.

Judging from the specifications of the processor, this phone would seem to offer a pretty good performance. Though certainly not as good as a mobile phone with quad-core processors based on ARM Cortex-A9 or Cortex-A15.

That makes this phone is disappointing RAM capacity, since Huawei only provide 512MB RAM for this phone. While most quad core smartphone usualy sports with 2GB of RAM.
