Foldable smartphone panel shipments expected to reach 50 million by 2025: IHS

Foldable smartphones are gradually becoming a phenomenon that could soon take the industry by storm. The first real foldable device, the Royole Flexpai, was launched in China recently. The year 2019 has already been predicted to be the year of foldable smartphones just as 2018 was dominated by full-screen phone. Samsung has already revealed that it would be releasing a foldable phone. So too, the trio of LG, Huawei and OPPO have at one point or the order shown interests in foldable phones. Research firm IHS Markit has now predicted that the number of foldable AMOLED screens that will be shipped between now and 2025 will reach 50 million.

Despite the towering prediction, it shows the foldable design won’t be so popular as it will account for just 6% of expected total AMOLED shipments by 2025 (825 million). The foldable AMOLEDs are also expected to account for 11% of the total shipments of flexible AMOLED panels (476 million). According to Jerry Kang, a senior principal analyst at IHS Markit Display Research, phone manufacturers are putting serious efforts in the aspect of smartphone designs, bringing in more innovativeness. This innovativeness is borne out of the need to shift focus from the traditional smartphone market due to saturation.

Jerry Kang also disclosed that smartphone manufacturers are rather cautious about launching a foldable smartphone due to concerns about durability especially when the panel is folded repeatedly. Thus, the shift to foldable AMOLED may indeed be a gradual one. The panel makers are expected to gradually increase their plant capacity utilization. Due to the low demand for traditional flexible AMOLED panels, suppliers expect smartphone brands to introduce foldable devices as early as possible. With a more optimistic attitude, some manufacturers are even considering investing in new factories to produce foldable AMOLED panels. IHS predicts that the supply capacity of flexible AMOLED panels will account for more than half of the total supply capacity of AMOLED panel by the fourth quarter of 2019.

Design

Vivo X21s and Oppo RX17 Neo have a similar design and it is impressive in both cases. They have a very high screen-to-body ratio thanks to narrow bezels and a waterdrop notch, as well as gradient color variants, while Nokia X7 is less attractive with its thicker bezels. If you like to have a reflective glass back with light waves, you will love the Oppo RX17 Neo more, while if you want the highest screen-to-body ratio, Vivo X21s is for you

Display

With its higher screen-to-body ratio and the Super AMOLED technology, Vivo X21s has the most convincing display among these devices. However, the viewing quality is more or less the same as the Oppo RX17 Neo, so if you choose the RX17 Neo you will just lose the X21s’ thinner bezels. Nokia X7 has a typical midrange-class IPS panel, and it is inferior to its opponents.

Hardware & Software

While you should definitely go for Vivo X21s or Oppo RX17 Neo when it comes to design, Nokia X7 offers the best hardware side thanks to the more powerful Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 chipset. If you exclude the Snapdragon 8xx series, the Snapdragon 710 is the best Qualcomm’s SoC and it is paired with up to 6 GB of RAM on the Nokia X7. Vivo X21s and Oppo RX17 Neo have a customized user interface, while Nokia X7 comes with the stock Android One which will be treated with faster updates.

Camera

All of these devices are equipped with very nice cameras, even though they can not compete with the most important flagships. Whichever you choose, you will get a good camera phone, but Nokia X7 attracts me more and I think it is able to click more interesting shots with its Zeiss optics and OIS.

Battery

There is just a bunch of mAh of difference between the batteries of these handsets, so do not expect big differences in their battery life. Oppo RX17 Neo has the biggest battery, but we have to see how good the company optimized it on the software side to give a final verdict about which device is better.

OnePlus 6T teardown affords use our first look at its internals

Since the OnePlus 6T flagship was announced about two weeks back, the device has seen several positive reviews. Apart from reviews, the device has been put through the durability test by YouTuber JerryRigEverything with the device coming out in flying colours. The YouTuber has also released a second video where he dismantles the OP6T.

The dismantling video takes us through the entire teardown process right from when the rear panel is opened. Well, Zack Jerry had earlier taken off the metal back to make a transparent back. So he just took off the transparent back to commence the teardown. The video shows the 3700mAh battery is held in place with glue but is pretty easy to remove.

The disassembly video also gives us our first look at the OP6T in-display fingerprint reader. The video shows there is an opening just under the AMOLED panel that lets the sensor to capture the user’s fingerprint including all of its ridges and pores, for accurate identification. The sensor looks very similar to a regular phone camera sensor but is a lot smaller. In addition, the video also shows the OnePlus 6T come with watertight seals wherever there is an opening, affirming its water-resistant build. Even the circuit board is coated to protect the electronics against corrosion. You can check out the video from above.

LG Q9 render leaked to reveal front design

The LG Q9 is an upcoming upper mid-range phone from LG. Now that the South Korean company has already announced the LG V40 ThinQ flagship phone in the previous month, it could be now gearing up on the launch of LG Q9. The key specifications of the smartphone had leaked in September. Also, a leaked video that had appeared in the same month to reveal its appearance. Today, a fresh render of the phone to reveal its front design.

As it can be seen in the below image, the handset is equipped with a notched screen. The handset seems to be sporting a tall aspect ratio. The chin of the device is a bit thick and the notch seems to be housing the front-facing camera, an earpiece and some other sensors. The volume rockers are present on the left side of the phone. The Power button is located on the right edge. The handset does not feature a physical button for accessing Google Assistant.

Like the predecessor LG Q8, the upcoming LG Q9 could be an IP68 rated and MIL-STD-810G certified handset. The handset is rumored to arrive with a 6.1-inch IPS LCD display that supports Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels.

Samsung has announced the W2019 flagship flip phone through a launch event in China. It has arrived as the successor of the Snapdragon 835 powered W2018 flip phone that was announced in December last year. Compared to the predecessor model, the W2019 has come with some new features such as improved processor, dual rear cameras and side-mounted fingerprint scanner.

Samsung W2019 Specifications and Features

The Samsung W2019 flip phone features an external S-AMOLED display of 4.2 inches that carries support for Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The 4.2-inch internal S-AMOLED display of the phone also supports FHD resolution.

The clamshell phone when closed measures 132.9 x 63.4 x 17.3mm and it weighs 257 grams. The rear side of the phone is made out of Corning Gorilla Glass. It comes in two color choices of Rose Gold and Platinum. Opening the flip phone reveals its directional keypad as well as its numeric keypad. The smartphone is equipped with a side-mounted fingerprint reader.

The Super night scene feature first made its debut on the Mi Mix 3 and comes as an entirely new and improved feature for the phone’s night imaging capability. The 960 fps slow-motion video capability is also another highlight of the Mi Mix 3 which is coming to the Mi 8.

As stated earlier, these features are only open to users of the Mi 8 running MIUI 10 Development version. The feature will be available after the latest update. Google Pixel 3 overheating issues while charging is causing it to shut down automatically

Customers who have purchased the new Google Pixel 3 are claiming that it suffers from overheating issues while charging. Pixel 3 owners have taken to various platforms such as Reddit, Twitter, YouTube and Product Forums by Google to share the overheating problem that they are facing.

Generally, phones tend to become warm while charging, but the issue with Google Pixel 3 is that it overheats to such an extent that it results in its shut down. Pixel 3 users have claimed that the overheating issues can be observed during wired charging as well as wireless charging. However, the issue is more prominent while wireless charging.

The device heats up even more when some sort of action is performed while charging. For instance, carrying out a video call dramatically increase the temperature of the device. However, simpler functions like streaming a video can also cause the Pixel 3 to heat up significantly.

Users who have tried third-party chargers and Google Pixel Stand for charging the Pixel 3 have also claimed to have encountered the same issue. The below image shows that once the temperature of the device rises to a certain point, it shows the “phone is getting warm” message to the user. If the device continues to heat up, the Pixel 3 will automatically shut down to avoid damage. When device gets warmer and warmer while charging, the speed at which it charges also reduces considerably. Some users have claimed that loses battery power while charging when the device becomes too hot.

Vivo X21s goes official with in-display fingerprint reader and SD660 in China

Vivo has announced the Vivo X21s smartphone in China. It is a new variant of the Vivo X21 smartphone that was unveiled in March this year. The Vivo X21s is fueled by Snapdragon 660 and it features a waterdrop notch screen. Like the X21 phone, the X21s also features an in-screen fingerprint reader.

Vivo X21s Specifications and Features

The Vivo X21s handset that features a 3D glass rear measures 157.1 x 75.08 x 7.9mm and weighs 156 grams. The smartphone is fitted with a 6.41-inch Super AMOLED screen that produces Full HD+ resolution of 2340 x 1080 pixels. The small notch on the screen allows the phone to support an aspect ratio of 19.5:9. The fourth generation in-display fingerprint scanner is present on the device. The IR camera springs into action to support facial recognition in dark.

The Snapdragon 660 AIE chipset powers the Vivo X21s along with 6 GB of RAM. It has an inbuilt storage of 128 GB. It comes with support for microSD card.

The FunTouch 4.5 UI is overlaid on the Android 8.1 Oreo OS that comes preinstalled on the X21s. Vivo’s Dual-Turbo technology that accelerates the CPU and GPU performance while gaming is also available on the phone. Other features made available on the phone by the Chinese manufacturer include Jovi AI assistant and Game Mode. The 3,400mAh battery carries support for dual-engine flash charging.

The frontside of the Vivo X21s is fitted with a 24.8-megapixel selfie camera with f/2.0 aperture. The backside of the phone features a vertical dual camera setup that includes f/1.8 aperture 12-megapixel main sensor that is coupled with f/2.4 aperture 5-megapixel secondary sensor. The dual rear cameras are equipped with features like AI beauty technology, AI scene recognition and AI portrait mode. The front camera supports studio lighting effects for capturing impressive selfie shots. The connectivity features of the Vivo X21s are 4G LTE, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n, Bluetooth 5.0, GPS, microUSB 2.0 and 3.5mm audio jack.

Honor sold over a million phones during India’s Diwali festive season sales, registers 300% growth

Indian e-commerce market reaches its peak during the Diwali festive season sales. After Realme revealed that it has managed to sell over one million devices during Flipkart’s Big Billion Sale, Honor has revealed its sales data during the Diwali sales.

Honor India revealed that during the Diwali sales, the company recorded 300 percent year-on-year growth and sold over a million smartphones. It also said that the company’s fanbase increased by 32 percent.

Further, the company says that its ‘Star Product’ was the Honor 9N during Flipkart’s Big Billion Days while the Honor 8X was the bestseller in the category of devices priced between Rs. 12,000 and Rs. 15,000 during Amazon‘s Great Indian festival. It also revealed that the top five cities for sales were Hyderabad, Chennai, Bengaluru, Pune, and Kolkata.
