Huawei’s Kirin 710 chip pops up on GeekBench onboard the Nova 3i

Huawei took the industry by storm a couple of days back with the launch of the Nova 3i packing the new Hisilicon Kirin 710 chipset. The Nova 3i has now appeared on Geekbench bearing the model number – Huawei INE-X2. The Gekbench listing affords us an opportunity to get our first glimpse of the benchmark performance of the Kirin 710 chipset.

The Hisilicon Kirin 710 is an octa-core built on a 12nm wafer and it features 4x Cortex-A73 cores clocked at 2.2GHz and 4x Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.7GHz. On the single core test, the Kirin 710 polled 1601 points while on the multi-core test it garnered 5457 points. Comparing this to other chipsets in the same categories, like the Snapdragon 660, and Snapdragon 710, we notice some differences. Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 710 chipset on its part, is a 10nm chipset with 2x Kryo 360 Gold (2.2GHz) and 6x Kryo 360 Silver cores (1.7GHz). They are based on Cortex-A75 and A55 respectively. With a single-core test score of 1875 and a multi-core test score of 5886 points, the SDM710 obviously performs better than Kirin 710. But then, Geekbench result doesn’t really reflect the actual real-life performance 100 percent.

The Kirin 710 Geekbench score is slightly higher than that of Qualcomm’s premium mid-range Snapdragon 660 chipset on the single core test (1599 points) while on the multi-core test, Snapdragon 660’s score of 5639 surpasses that of Huawei’s mid-range Kirin 710 chip.

We also compare the score of the Kirin 710 chip to that of its predecessor – Kirin 659 using the Geekbench score of the Honor 7X. Obviously, the Kirin 710 is a massive upgrade over the Kirin 659 which scored 909 points on the single-core test and in multi-core test, it recorded a score of 3159 points. The new Geekbench core for the Kirin 710 almost doubles that of its predecessor both on the single-core and multi-core tests. Thus, the performance is expected to be spot-on.

Samsung Galaxy Note 9 India pre-order begins August 19

Its the second half of the year and time for Samsung to launch its second flagship, the Galaxy Note 9. Samsung already announced the launch date as August 9. But after the launch what comes next is when people can get their hands on the device. We have news for those in India.

Based on info from 91mobiles, the Galaxy Note 9 will be available for pre-order starting August 19. Pre-orders will run till the end of the month and sales will begin the first week of September. As is customary with Samsung, pre-orders are supposed to come with extra goodies but there isn’t any info on that at the moment.

With respect to price, the Galaxy Note 9 is expected to be priced between INR 70,000 (~$1015) to INR 75,000 (~$1087). However, the source says the price is pegged at INR 72,990 (~$1059).

The Galaxy Note 9 will come with a 6.4-inch screen with a QHD+ resolution. The version sold in India will be powered by the Exynos 9810 SoC with 6GB of RAM. Depending on the model you purchase, you either get 64GB, 128GB, or 256GB of storage.

As promised, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor has today launched its new smartphone in the Indian market — Honor 9N, which the rebranded model of the Honor 9i (2018) that was recently launched in China.

The Honor 9N comes in four color options — Midnight Black, Sapphire Blue, Lavender Purple and Robin Egg Blue. The smartphone will be available for purchase in India from 31st July exclusively through online marketplace Flipkart and Honor official store.

The smartphone comes with a 5.84-inch Full HD+ display with screen resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels, 2.5D curved glass, and 19:9 aspect ratio. As is the current trend, the device features a notch on top of the display. Under the hood, the device will be powered by the company’s own Kirin 659 octa-core processor with Mali T830-MP2 graphics processor.

The 3GB RAM model has 32GB of internal storage while the 4GB RAM variant comes in two options for onboard storage — 64GB and 128GB. There’s also a microSD card slot that enables users to further expand the storage capacity up to 256GB. The smartphone will be powered by a 3,000mAh battery.

In the camera department, the phone features a dual camera setup on the back, consisting of a 13-megapixel primary sensor and a 2-megapixel secondary sensor. Both of them have an aperture of f/2.2 and supports phase detection autofocus. On the front side, there’s also a 16-megapixel snapper for taking selfies.

The 3GB RAM model of the Honor 9N is priced at Rs. 11,999 (approximately $174) while the 4GB RAM model is priced at Rs. 13,999, which roughly converts to $203. The 4GB RAM and 128GB storage variant is priced at Rs. 17,999, roughly $261. At this price range, the smartphone will be up against Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, Oppo’s Realme 1, and Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1.

The Honor 10GT officially went on its first sale in China today and as expected the device was sold out in just a matter of seconds. While we don’t know the number of units made available for the flash sale, it isn’t much of a surprise that it got sold out quickly. On June 5, Lenovo had held a launch event to announce Lenovo Z5, Lenovo K5 Note and Lenovo A5 smartphones. Except for Lenovo A5, the other two smartphones have been available for purchase in China. Starting from July 23, Lenovo has also started the sales of the Lenovo A5. It is currently available for reservations at JD.com. The Jingdong Mall listing reveals that it will be hitting the market on July 26.

The Lenovo A5 is an entry-level smartphone that features a 5.45-inch IPS LCD display panel that offers 18:9 aspect ratio and Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The MediaTek MT6739 SoC powers the Lenovo A5 along with 3 GB of RAM. The handset is also equipped with a microSD card slot. It is packed with a big battery of 4,000mAh capacity.

The Lenovo A5 has a single rear camera of 13-megapixel. It is couple with LED flash. The frontside of the phone features an 8-megapixel selfie shooter. Honor Note 10 tipped to feature AI2K technology that delivers 2K quality on its 1080p resolution

The Honor Note 10 is expected to be launched on July 31 and Huawei has released an official invitation to that effect. Ahead of its launch, the device has also made an appearance recently on China’s telecoms regulatory agency’s website – TENAA. The listing gave us an insight into the specifications of the device. One of the details revealed includes the presence of a 2220 x 1080p AMOLED display.

Before now, there were reports that Huawei has purchased a large inventory of 2K AMOLED display panels from Samsung and it was speculated to be for use on the Honor Note 10. That seems not to be the case but there’s a catch. Some internet users have disclosed via a post on Baidu that Huawei plans to utilize a new technology known as AI2k on the Honor Note 10. As suggested by the name, the technology makes use of Artificial Intelligence in order to enable the 1080p resolution display on the device to achieve 2K image quality. A teaser poster released by Honor had earlier shown the Note 10 would come with artificial intelligence.

The 1080p display which the device is expected to feature ordinarily helps in reducing CPU and GPU load as well as improving battery life. But with this new technology, the display would be able to offer more than 1080p resolution. This could be done in a way similar to what Nvidia did in 2014 with its Dynamic Super Resolution (DSR) which offers 4K quality on a 1080p resolution. We’ll have to wait to find out how the technology works when it is unveiled. The Honor Note is also tipped by Netizens to feature some other “scary” technology which will meet with us on July 31.

According to OPPO, the recently unveiled Find X flagship phone’s massive display offers a screen-to-body ratio of 93.8 percent. The handset is equipped with advanced features like 3D facial scanning and pop-up camera setup. The recent patent filings of the company suggest that it plans to launch new smartphones with innovative design and features in the near future. For instance, it had recently applied multiple patents for foldable smartphones. Also, the Chinese manufacturer has recently received patent approval for a new selfie-centric smartphone at World Intellectual Property Office (WIPO).

As it can be seen below, the new patent reveals that the smartphone features a full screen design. The front camera is absent, and the screen is surrounded with ultra-slim bezels. This suggests that the smartphone will be offering an impressive screen-to-body ratio. The backside of the handset is interesting as it features a dual camera setup as well as a secondary touchscreen display. This may not feature a fingerprint scanner, or it could be embedded under the main display.

Scenes that are captured by the camera are visible on the second screen. The additional display will give access to some camera features such as night mode, continuous video recording, self-timer apart from regular photo and video shooting.

The main display can show the same content on the front. There is an icon which allow users to conveniently switch to the second display. OPPO may either use an LCD or an OLED screen on the phone. There is a possibility that the company may opt for a flexible panel so that the edges can neatly curve into the edge of the phone.

The second display is placed on the upper half of the rear panel in such a way that the user can hold the smartphone comfortably without touching the screen. The above image shows the OPPO has considered different positions for the dual rear cameras. The patent filing reveals that it is a dust-resistant and waterproof smartphone. OPPO had filed this patent in September last year and it was published by WIPO on July 12.

There is no confirmation on whether OPPO will be soon launching a smartphone with such a design. The above patent seems to be a very suitable design for OPPO’s selfie expert series of smartphones.

For a while now, different manufacturers have been venturing into the manufacture of gaming smartphones. In 2011 Sony Ericsson released the Xperia Play which was one of the first gaming smartphones while in late 2017 Razer the gaming equipment manufacturer introduced the Razer phone. This year Xiaomi launched the Black Shark gaming smartphone and Nubia also came with Red Magic gaming phone. There are indications that other OEMs are planning to do same, with particular reference to Huawei and Samsung. To this end, rumour has it that South Korean giant Samsung the is working on its own gaming smartphone.

The rumor came to limelight just recently when the tipster with the username “MMDDJ_” on twitter posted that Samsung is working on a smartphone which is specially designed for gaming. In past time, the source has always hinted and is always correct on product Samsung would be launching. Although the tipster didn’t reveal the specs of the device, if actually, Samsung is working on one, in the nearest future we would get to know about its specs.

Fresh information reveals that the upcoming Nokia flagship phone may cost around $1,000 and it will be delivering topnotch photography experience.

The name of the forthcoming Nokia flagship is still under the wraps. Past reports have suggested that 2018 Nokia flagship could be called Nokia 9 or Nokia 10 or event Nokia A1 Plus. HMD Global may have discontinued the Nokia 6 (2018) in China

The Nokia 6 (2018) or Nokia 6.1 as it is known in other markets was the first phone launched by HMD Global this year. The device, like its predecessor, first launched in China before it made it to other markets. Six months later, it appears HMD Global has discontinued it in China.

Apparently, the device is no longer available at all three official retail partners. The Nokia 6 is officially sold by JD.com, Tmall, and Suning and all three of them don’t have it for sale anymore. Although the phone hasn’t been removed from the Nokia China site, the chances of these stores stocking it back are slim.

The Nokia 6 (2018) doesn’t seem like a good buy anymore. The Nokia 7 which shares the same processor as it now sells for ¥1199 (~$177) for the 4GB RAM + 64GB model. This is the same price as the 4GB RAM + 64GB Nokia 6 (2018) at Tmall before it was no longer available. It has the same 3000mAh battery too but a smaller 5.2-inch FHD display.

There is also the new Nokia X5 which comes with a more modern design, a more powerful Helio P60 SoC, and has a cheaper price tag.

While discontinuing it may seem like a rash decision, it seems like the best thing to do. The Nokia 6 (2018) is still available in other markets and will likely continue to be sold there if Nokia doesn’t launch any of its newer phones in those markets.

Xiaomi’s POCOPHONE F1 European price leaks, may give OnePlus a run for its money

Xiaomi trademarked a new brand name called POCOPHONE about a month ago. The first phone under the brand has been certified at Taiwan’s NCC and has also been seen at the FCC. It is also among the five Xiaomi phones that got certified at the ECC last week. Now the selling price of the phone in Europe has been revealed.

The info comes from popular leaker Roland Quandt (@rquandt) who posted a tweet revealing the details. In the tweet, he said the POCOPHONE F1 is actually pretty cheap based on its price tag. In Eastern Europe, the 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM model is priced at about ~€420 while the 6GB RAM + 128GB model is priced at ~€460.

Xiaomi Pocophone F1 will seemingly be cheap as chips… listing in eastern Euroland for ~420 Euro (6/64GB) and ~460 Euro (6/128GB) (prices converted). If it really has an SDM845 that pricing would be really impressive for a device with a 5,99in 2160x1080px screen.

The base model is significantly cheaper than the OnePlus 6 which sells for €519 for the 6GB RAM + 64GB model. Even though the POCOPHONE F1 doesn’t have 8GB of RAM, the €460 price of the 128GB version is still a very good offer as against the 8GB RAM OnePlus 6 that sells for €569.

The POCOPHONE F1 surfaced in a hands-on video last week and the video showed revealed a few details. First, the codename of the device is “Beryllium” which is the fourth SD845-powered Xiaomi phone expected to launch this year and also be sold in India.

It also revealed the phone has a 2.8GHz processor, runs MIUI 9 based on Android 8.1 Oreo, and has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. With respect to design, the phone has a notch similar to that of the Xiaomi Mi 8 but a different rear camera design.

The dual rear cameras sit in the middle and not on the left like Xiaomi’s recent releases. The design is also the same as that of the sketch at the FCC.
