Ahead of CES 2024, Samsung has unveiled its 2024 television lineup and an improved Tizen OS, focusing on enhancing the home TV experience.
Personalized Tizen OS and Revamped TV Plus Interface

The new 2024 Tizen OS emphasizes personalization through AI, enabling customized content and services for household members through individual profiles on their smart TVs. Samsung has revamped its TV Plus interface with a redesigned home screen for improved navigation and faster content discovery. It now connects with Samsung accounts, offering personalized content recommendations and convenient access to preferred channels based on viewing history.

Gaming Enhancements and Updated Ecosystem

In gaming, Samsung has partnered with Performance Designed Products (PDP) to release a specially designed wireless controller for the Samsung Gaming Hub. This controller boasts features like a built-in rechargeable battery with 40 hours of playtime, a 30-foot Bluetooth connection, and dedicated buttons for gaming and TV volume control.

Samsung’s updated ecosystem revolves around connected and inclusive experiences, with Samsung Daily+ serving as a central hub. It combines personal training, telehealth services, video calls, and remote PC solutions. Among the new additions are the Workout Tracker, TechnoGym and F45 fitness content, FlexIt live fitness sessions, and Tail veterinary consultations.

Seamless Connectivity and Accessibility Features

Samsung introduces connectivity features including Multi Control, enabling users to manage multiple screens with one Bluetooth keyboard or mouse for improved work-from-home efficiency. The latest Samsung TVs also enhance compatibility across devices, simplifying seamless connections between TVs, smartphones, and wearables.

The company also introduces the SmartThings Mobile Plugin, turning smartphones into versatile remotes for new apps and services. They also extend the 360 Audio feature to TVs for immersive audio experiences, and Vibrary allows users to enjoy high-quality images and music from both their TV and mobile devices.

Samsung prioritizes accessibility with innovative features such as Audio Subtitle, which uses AI and OCR to provide voice-guidance for embedded subtitles directly on the TV. They also offer the Remote for Barrier Free app to aid users with disabilities and introduce the AI-powered Relumino Together Mode to assist those with low vision.

Overall, Samsung‘s 2024 TV lineup and Tizen OS updates offer a more personalized, connected, and inclusive home entertainment experience. With a focus on gaming, fitness, and accessibility, Samsung is making its TVs the center of the smart home.

Improvements to Bixby, Samsung Health, Samsung Knox, and SmartThings were announced but perhaps the most significant bit was the opening up of Tizen OS to other TV brands.

TV manufacturers will now be able to bring Tizen OS to their smart TVs by using Samsung’s Tizen TV Platform Licensing service at a minimal cost. They will also be gaining access to the Tizen branding and get a chance to promote their products at major external events.

TV manufacturers will also be benefitting from the already established platform Tizen is, complete with access to a multitude of video and audio streaming services including Apple Music, Apple TV+, Disney+, Hulu, Netflix, Prime Video, Spotify, YouTube, YouTube Kids, and YouTube TV.

Samsung isn’t the first to open up a proprietary platform for other brands though. LG and Roku have already been allowing other TV companies to use their smart TV platform. Amazon’s Fire TV and Google’s Android TV operating systems are also being used by multiple TV brands.

Regardless, it’s great to see Samsung following in their footsteps, although it remains to be seen if other companies will actually be interested in the Tizen platform. But Tizen is actually one of the most feature-rich platforms out there, so companies will surely be missing out if they give it a miss, especially if they do not have their own OS.

The Korean tech giant later switched to its own Tizen OS but still retained the Galaxy Gear on Android. As the company prepares to switch back to Android with the Wear OS, it has advised Galaxy Gear owners to upgrade to Tizen OS by August 5 to continue having access to the Galaxy Store.

Samsung will switch to the Android operating system for its smartwatches later this year. The Wear OS will power the Galaxy Watch 4 and the Galaxy Watch 4 Active instead of Tizen OS. The Android-based Wear OS means that the devices will have wider access to apps via the Galaxy Store, unlike Tizen OS. Samsung is also saying that there will be no switch from Tizen to Wear OS for smartwatches that the Tizen OS currently powers.

Although there are likely only a few Gear watch owners, the fact that Samsung is making the announcement indicates their presence. Existing Galaxy Gear watch owners can only continue to enjoy support from Samsung if they upgrade to Tizen OS by the August 5 date (Korean Standard Time). In order not to encounter a total loss of saved data in the form of videos, images, and other content, Gear watch owners are encouraged to back up their data before upgrading to Tizen OS. The Gear watch device will be reset upon completion of the upgrade, and all pre-upgrade data will be wiped off.

However, it seems counter-intuitive that the Gear watch OS is being upgraded from Android to Tizen, while Samsung is already switching back to Android via the Wear OS. The upgraded Samsung Galaxy Watch will only have access to a limited number of apps compared with the Android-based smartwatches.

In a blog post, the search engine giant announced that it will be combining its Wear OS with Tizen based software platform that was used in wearable products from the South Korean smartphone maker. This new platform has simple been dubbed as “Wear,” although the name has yet to be finalized and is subject to possible change. The merger of the two wearable OS would enable both firms to offer a better user experience to their customers.

With this joint effort, the companies would be able to offer improvements in battery life. Other benfits from this mergers also includes, 30 percent fster loading times for wearable applications, and smoother animations as well. The parnership would even help developers in making things simpler. Furthermore, it would also create a ingle central smartwatch OS for the Android platform while also offering a greater selection of apps and watch faces.

Google’s Bjorn Kilburn added that “All device makers will be able to add a customized user experience on top of the platform, and developers will be able to use the Android tools they already know and love to build for one platform and ecosystem.” Samsung has also confirmed that next generation Galaxy Watch will run on this new platform and this will even ship with future high end Fitbit devices as well.

Pro-Samsung tech blog Sammobile has now released an “exclusive” report which it claims to confirm that the Korean tech giant would be ditching the Tizen OS in favor of the Android Wear OS for the upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 models. Hence, for the 2021 lineup, Samsung’s watches will be running on the Wear OS.

Incorporating the Wear OS and the One UI will produce a mix of the classic look of the Samsung wearable and additional functionalities. Like the new Apple Watches, the upcoming Galaxy Watch 4 will have a feature that allows a user to send short audio messages to their contacts, akin to the functionality of a walkie-talkie.

Three new models are reportedly lined up for release this year, and they are codenamed Wise, Fresh, and Lucky. One of the models will have a classic look similar to a conventional watch, while the two other models will highlight Samsung’s innovative and attractive designs with a sporty look.

As for the price range and expected date of unveiling of the three Galaxy Watch 4 models, no specifics have been given yet. Samsung already has a July event slated for the launch of its foldable smartphone, and the Galaxy Watch 4 may also be unveiled during that event.

However, this time, the company is planning to launch new wearable devices ahead of the launch of Apple’s Watch Series 7 to have an upper-hand in the segment.

It appears that both Samsung and Apple are gearing up to introduce a feature that will monitor the user’s blood glucose levels and Samsung wants to be the first in the market with this feature, thus an early launch of the devices.

There are also reports claiming that the Samsung is ditching its Tizen OS for the Google Wear OS on its upcoming smartwatches. If this turns out to be true, then it will be the first wearable devices from the South Korean giant to have Google’s Wear OS.

Samsung accounted for about 10 percent of the global smartwatch sale in the fourth quarter of 2020, which is way behind Apple‘s 40 percent market share. With major changes to the devices, the South Korean company is hoping to catch up with the market leader.

It is already said to be working on the next Galaxy Watch for 2021. A report by Galaxyclub.nl reveals that Samsung is indeed working on the two Galaxy Watch models. Further, a new tips says that Samsung could ditch Tizen OS for Android on its Smartwatches.

According to the report, Samsung’s two new Watches have the model numbers SM-R86x SM-R87x. If you recall, the latest Galaxy Watch3 and Galaxy Watch Active2 both have SM-R8xx as model numbers. Hence, the new Watches could be their successors in 2021.

Anyway, the Watches will have different sizes as before, and available in Bluetooth and Cellular variants which is a no-brainer. Meanwhile, a tipster has hinted that Samsung might ditch Tizen OS on its future Smartwatches.

Ice Universe has said on Twitter that Samsung’s New Watch will use Android(i.e, Wear OS) instead of the Tizen platform. Samsung developed the Tizen OS with a view of building a broader & unique ecosystem for itself. It expanded the platform to various products like Smartwatches, TVs etc.

Samsung's new watch will use Android to replace Tizen.

— Ice universe (@UniverseIce) February 19, 2021

In fact, the company’s Tizen OS is the leading Smart TV platform Globally. Having said that, the reason for Samsung opting for Wear OS could be due to the lack of third-party apps for Galaxy Watches.

Either way, Samsung’s next Watch rumored as Galaxy Watch Active 3/ Galaxy Watch 4 will likely get a blood sugar monitoring feature. Let’s wait for more leaks to know about the upcoming Galaxy Watch models in 2021.

And as the date on Watch face suggests, the launch could be on January 14. This is the date when the company is expected to unveil the flagship Galaxy S21 series.

A picture courtesy of Evan shows the Watch Active2 in Rose Gold base. The strap on the image looks to be in Purple color. To recall, the wearable is already selling in Pink Gold along with Black, Silver color options. That said, we are as surprised as you in hearing the news as Samsung has already launched an improved Galaxy Watch 3 back in August.

EDITOR’S PICK: Samsung showcases its NEON artificial humans’ role in banking in the future

One of the reasons Samsung could bring this is just for the sake of launching a wearable at the unpacked event. Or maybe to leverage a bit more on the already booming wearable market in multiple countries whilst not undermining the sales of Watch 3. Either way, looks like the Watch Active 2 will make its appearance again and launch alongside the Galaxy S21 series, Galaxy Buds Pro TWS.

Needless to say that Samsung has been updating its Watches constantly. Back in April, it brought a new Health Monitor App support which eventually made its way to Watch Active 2. Recently, the company also brought VO2 max measurement for endurance and Smart reply features.

Hence, even if it re-launches a year and a half later in 2021, users shouldn’t be wary of it being outdated. The Galaxy Watch Active 2 features a 1.2-inch(40mm), 1.4-inch(44mm) sAMOLED round display, Exynos 9110 dual-core chipset, 768MB of RAM. It also has Bluetooth/4G and Aluminum/Stainless-steel variant and supports ECG measurement, 39 workout modes, and more.

While more and more companies are entering this category, South Korean giant Samsung has managed to hold down its strong position in the market.

Most of the Smart TVs launching in the market are powered by Android TV with the company’s own custom interface on top, or they are using software like Roku or Amazon’s Fire TV. But Samsung is using its own Tizen OS, which is based on Linux.

Now, thanks to the strong sale of Samsung TVs, Tizen OS has been ranked as the world’s largest streaming TV platform. This is mostly due to the company’s TV sales in the third quarter of this year.

As per the report from Strategy Analytics, Tizen OS accounted for 12.5 percent of the connected TV devices in use, ahead of other platforms such as WebOS from LG, Sony PlayStation, Roku TV OS, Amazon Fire TV OS, and Google’s Android TV.

EDITOR’S PICK: SMIC commences small-scale trial production of its second-generation N+1 process

It also revealed that Samsung managed to sell 11.8 million Smart TVs worldwide in Q3 2020, which represents the best-ever quarter by Samsung so far and no other manufacturer has reached this level.

The numbers indicate that Samsung’s Tizen OS for Smart TVs is now being used in more than 155 million units, representing a rise of 23 percent when compared to last year.

Samsung has been trying to monetize its Tizen OS platform and with the rising number of users, it will be interesting to see how the South Korean giant manages to monetize the platform and keep the users happy.

Fresh information shared by a South Korean publication reveals that the upcoming Gear S4 will be rebranded as Galaxy Watch. The report has also revealed that Samsung will be launching it alongside the Galaxy Note 9 on Aug. 9 in New York, US.

Samsung has used Mobile World Congress (MWC) and IFA tech expo events to announce previous Gear smartwatches and fitness trackers. However, it will be for the first time that the South Korean will be launching it through a dedicated event in New York, USA.

Earlier in this month, a tipster from China had claimed that the Gear S4 will coming as Galaxy Watch would be running on Android Wear OS. However, fresh report that has appeared on ZDNet Korea reveals that even though it will be renamed as Galaxy Watch, it will continue to run on Tizen OS.

The South Korean company had launched the first-generation Gear smartwatch with Android Wear OS. However, the firm switch to the home-brewed Tizen OS with Gear S2 in 2014. Coming back to the rebranded Galaxy Watch, it is speculated to run on the latest Tizen 4.0. The new OS is expected to arrive with Bixby assistant preinstalled. The voice control APIs that are expected to be available on the Tizen OS 4.0 will allow it to rival with Apple Watch that ships with Siri and Android Wear smartwatches that feature Google Assistant. Since Tizen OS is now applied to home appliances and wearable devices, it works fine with other devices, claimed an industry expert.

The Galaxy Watch is also rumored to arrive with new fitness-centric features and it will also give access to new healthcare apps. The report also claims that the Galaxy Watch would be available in two sizes.

Samsung’s upcoming smartwatch has also appeared at Federal Communications Commission (FCC). Through the FCC documents it has been known that the FCC label that is placed on the backside of the device has the “Samsung Galaxy Watch” moniker which confirms that it will indeed arrive with a new name.

The FCC documents have revealed that the SM-R815U model will be heading to the U.S while the SM-R815W will be releasing in Canada. In the U.S., the smartwatch will be supporting LTE connectivity through AT&T, Verizon, T-Mobile and Sprint. The smartwatch is expected to arrive in carrier and unlocked versions. Also, there could be a Wi-Fi only edition of the Galaxy Watch. The Through FCC documents, it has been known that it will be featuring an approximate screen size of 1.2 inches and it will be measuring 51.2 x 43.4mm.
Samsung is now becoming the first Android smartphone manufacturer in the world through their Galaxy lineup smartphone. Just how badly does Samsung want to split from Android?. Samsung’s Chief Secretary Wonsuk Lee said at an HTML5 conference that the company is working on fostering a relationship between its Tizen OS and Firefox OS.

According to rumors recently, Samsung want to split from Android and focus on Tizen OS smartphone as the main product. It’s possible for Samsung to working on their own operating system, Tizen OS.

Lee said that because Tizen OS and Firefox are both based on HTML5, applications written in any of the platforms will be able to work on other platforms. Tizen device itself will be released in the first half of next year.

Last week a report emerged from South Korea, which reveal that the local operators are already testing a prototype of Tizen smartphone provided by Samsung. Last October while compatriot competitor Samsung, LG has released Firefox mobile phone called LG Fireweb.

Speculation has Samsung eventually competing against iOS and Android with a Tizen-FirefoxOS combination, but something like that is a long way in the future.

Intel has been responses to the rumor that says ‘Tizen OS is dead”,recently, the one of blogger Eldar Murtazin, make a statements that cause turmoil in the tech world. He considered Tizen as being Dead. According to Intel, the company is very committed to the development of Tizen. Here is the statement quoted from TizenExperts.com :

Intel is very committed to the development of Tizen. We see a unique role for Tizen in the industry to create and to grow a new, open and flexible, mobile operating system that allows developers to “write once/run on many devices”. Tizen has received broad industry support through the Tizen Association and has achieved major milestones this year including establishing the storefront, releasing the Tizen 2.1 source code, the Tizen IVI 2.0 and the Tizen 2.2 Beta SDK that was just released yesterday.

Previously known as the first release of Tizen devices from Samsung apparently postponed to the 4th quarter. The main reason for this delay is due to the development of its application store. But according to Russian blogger who is also a reviewer of mobile-review.com, Eldar Murtazin, says that Tizen OS is not postponed, but it’s over.

In September of 2011 it was announced that MeeGo, a mobile operating system is open source Linux-based mobile phone that was ever released by Nokia, retired to be transitioned into an entirely new OS, Tizen. Now, almost two years later, the platform will eventually be released to the market by Samsung.

Samsung is confirming their plan to launch a Tizen smartphone with upscale category and is expected to becoming Microsoft’s Windows Phone rivals through Tizen Phone. Samsung confirmed through its executive vice president Lee Young Hee, who said:

“Tizen Mobile will be released in August or September, through the high-end category, and will be equipped with the cool specs.”

Tizen was developed with the help of a few companies such as Samsung, Intel and Sprint (service provider). Huawei is also said to be planning to release a Tizen smartphone, but there is no schedule.

The fact that Samsung as largest smartphone vendor in the world to release this new platform could be a threat to Microsoft, which is still trying to develop Windows Phone OS.

On the other hand, Samsung also recently announced Tizen operating system which is actually going to replace Bada operating system as one of the major Samsung flagship. Tizen OS is an operating system developed by Samsung and Intel.

Tizen OS is based on Linux platform, is likely to compete with other newly launched operating systems like the Firefox OS, as well as Microsoft’s Windows Phone and an overhauled BlackBerry operating system.
