Qualcomm wants the audio jack to go, announces aptX Adaptive for wireless audio

More and more manufacturers are removing the audio jack from their phones. Although Qualcomm isn’t a phone manufacturer, it also wants the audio jack to go. Today, the chipset manufacturer announced a new codec called aptX Adaptive for improved audio for wireless devices.

aptX Adaptive summary

Qualcomm says there is an increase in demand for hi-res wireless audio and its new codec is designed to provide that. Unlike some other audio codecs that only works when listening to music, aptX Adaptive automatically adjusts and “provide optimum audio quality” based on content. So it doesn’t matter if you are playing games, streaming music, or watching a movie, with aptX Adaptive, you get high-quality audio. Latency is also low.

The codec is backward compatible with aptX and aptX HD, has a compression ratio of between 5:1 – 10:1, and supports 24-bit 48kHZ audio formats.

Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will launch on October 16 in London

The Mate 10 series have been pretty successful since their launch last year. Huawei’s CEO revealed they have sold over 10 million units since they went on sale. However, the series will have to make way for a successor soon. The Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro will succeed the Mate 10 and Mate 10 Pro and Huawei has revealed the launch date and venue.

For the launch of the Mate 20 duo, Huawei is heading to London on the 16th of October. While the location is different, the date is exactly a year from the launch of the Mate 10 series. It has become a sort of tradition for Huawei to launch its flagship phones in Europe and we don’t think that will be changing soon.

Huawei Mate 20 series official launch

There is a lot to be excited about with respect to the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. Both phones will be the first powered by the newly announced Kirin 980, the world’s first 7nm processor. Actually, we expect a third device – a Porsche Design edition will also come with the chipset.

Specs of the Mate 20 leaked a few weeks ago. It will come with a 6.3-inch AMOLED screen with a water-drop notch and a 2244 x 1080 resolution. There will be three cameras on the rear like that of the Huawei P20 Pro but they will have a different arrangement.

Lenovo Slider Phone teased officially by company’s VP Chang Cheng

Each time Lenovo‘s VP Chang Cheng pop into the news, what comes to mind is his penchant for overhyping the company’s phones. We can’t forget in a hurry how we expected a Lamborghini looking flagship in the Lenovo Z5 but ended up getting a different thing. The Z5 wasn’t in anyway a disappointment for a mid-ranger and that was what pacified fans. Mr Cheng is in the news again, this time around he has teased what looks like a Lenovo concept phone with a slider design similar to that we just saw on the Honor Magic 2. Lenovo

Now, this isn’t the first time the CEO is releasing teasers based on what is trending. Recall that when Smartisan released the Nut R1 with a 1TB storage version, Cheng disclosed that the Lenovo Z5 will come with a 4TB storage version or so we thought. That turned out to be a 4TB Particle Cloud Storage. We even did a compilation of Mr Cheng’s Z5 lies which you can read here.

Notwithstanding the Z5 PR blunder, Lenovo still remains an innovative company and this design may indeed become a reality on the company’s next flagship. The design looks attractive as the removal of the front camera and earpiece leaves the front completely bezel-less. The prospect of a notch-less, bezel-less display sounds interesting but don’t expect the bezels to be as thin as seen in the video. The video also suggests the Lenovo model will come with an on-screen fingerprint sensor. We can’t say when this one will be launched but we expect to get more details in the coming days. There you have it, OPPO Find X seems to be winning the NEX by Vivo as more OEMs seem to be going for the Find X-styled slider design. Anyway, Meizu’s CEO thinks neither the notch design nor the slider design is the future of smartphone designs. We have a feeling he may right. This design isn’t looking like one that will be around for long.

Kirin 980 is official: World’s first 7nm chipset with two dedicated NPUs

Huawei has unveiled its most powerful processor at the on-going IFA Berlin tech show.  The Hisilicon Kirin 980 was officially unveiled a short while ago and is the world’s first 7nm chipset.

Kirin 980 IFA announcement

The Kirin 980 is not only the first 7nm processor in the world, it is also the first chipset with the new Cortex-A76 CPU cores; the first chipset with a dual-NPU; the first with the Mali-G76 GPU, the first with a Cat. 21 LTE modem, and the first chipset to support 2133MHz LPDDR4X. That’s so many firsts!

The Kirin 980 has 8 cores in a tri-cluster arrangement (2+2+4). The four Cortex-A76 cores are separated into two – one set is clocked at 2.6GHz while the other is clocked at 2.2GHz. The former takes on high demanding short-term tasks while the latter handles high-demanding long-term tasks. The power-saving Cortex-A55 cores are clocked at 1.8GHz and handle simple everyday tasks. Huawei says it uses a flex-scheduling system which distributes tasks among the cores.

Kirin 980 vs Qualcomm Snapdragon 845

The GPU is the Mali G76 MP10 and it has a clock speed of 720MHz. Huawei says it brings a 48% increase in terms of performance and a 178% increase in power management. There is also a special boost mode called clock-boosting technology for when more graphics power is needed.

Nubia Z18 launch invite is a nice crystal ball teasing the “boundless” bezel-less screen

Nubia recently announced that it would be launching the flagship Nubia Z18 in China on September 5. The company did send out invitations and to do that it deployed an interesting paraphernalia which is a crystal ball that isn’t just attractive but is a teaser on its own. It teases the bezel-less display which will be the main attraction of the Z18.Nubia Z18

Crystal balls are always nice and a beauty to behold, we all love them. This one isn’t any different as it can light up and even plays music. It has a separate wooden stand on which it rests. The crystal ball is a depiction of the Z18’s slogan- “Exploration without boundaries”. This is closely related to the bezel-less display the Nubia phone is expected to pack. The Nubia Z series is known for ultra-thin bezels and the Z18 will take that even further. Previously, leaked photos of the device had surfaced, pointing to the presence of a water drop notch display just like the OPPO R17 et al.Nubia z18

Xiaomi has announced a price cut for the Mi 6X which is also powered by the same chipset. All though it isn’t as cheap as the Mi Pad 4, it makes it one of the cheapest Snapdragon 660 phones on the market.

[Updated: It’s genuine leather] Photos of Huawei P20 Pro’s new color variants leaks, has leather versions too

The Huawei P20 Pro comes in four different color variants – Twilight, Black, Midnight Blue, and Pink Gold. Huawei will be announcing four more at the on-going IFA Berlin show. Photos of these new color variants have surfaced online ahead of the official announcement.

The photos were posted on Twitter by Roland Quandt, though it seems they were first posted on the web by CNET but the page has been taken down. According to the tweet, Huawei is releasing four new color variants, two of which have a leather back.

[envira-gallery id=”209172″]

There are two new color gradients like the Twilight variant. One is a mix of blue, purple and green and the other appears to have the same color gradient as the Lily White Honor 10 GT. The leather versions come in Yellow Leather and Black Leather variants. The former has a gold frame while the latter has a silver aluminum frame.

There is no info on the price of these new variants and availability at the moment. We believe that will be announced at Huawei’s press conference later today.

The Huawei P20 Pro has a 6.1-inch display with a 1080 x 2240 resolution. It has an 18.7:9 aspect ratio thanks to the notch in the display. Powered by the Kirin 970, it has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

The phone’s main selling point is its triple rear cameras which put it at the top of the list of phone’s with the best camera performance. The three sensors are a combination of a 40MP f/1.8 sensor, a 20MP f/1.6 sensor, and an 8MP f/2.4 sensor with 3x optical zoom. There is also a 24MP sensor in front for selfies.

Xiaomi to finish Indian user data migration on local cloud servers by 2018 end

Through a press release, Xiaomi has declared that it won’t be storing user data of its Indian users outside the country. It is now in the process of migrating the user data to secure cloud platforms such Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Microsoft Azure locally in India. The company has also confirmed that the migration process will finish by the end of this year.

The Chinese manufacturer will be migrating user data of Indian users across various Xiaomi services and products like Mi Cloud, Mi TV, MIUI (Xiaomi Market, feed, Mi Video advertising, Mi Messaging, push notifications, etc) Mi Community (in.c.mi.com) and Xiaomi’s e-commerce store (mi.com/in) on the local cloud servers in India. Prior to this, the Indian user data was stored on cloud servers in Singapore and the U.S.

The company has been storing all the new user data of Indian users since July 1 on its local servers. It is aiming to finish the migration process of mi.com/in user data by the next month. Now that the user data will be available on local servers, Indian users will be able to enjoy better access speed.

Last year, the Government of India had instructed around many smartphone makers from China to declare the procedures and processes that they were using to securing the Indian user data. In September 2017, Xiaomi confirmed that it will be shifting its servers in India in future. And today comes the confirmation from the company that it will soon finish the Indian user data migration to local servers.

The IDC survey reports have revealed that Xiaomi has been leading the Indian phone market since the past four consecutive quarters from Q3 2017 to Q2 2018. As of Q2 2018, the company is holding an impressive market share of 29.7 percent. In the same quarter, Xiaomi became the first phone manufacturer to ship around 10 million units within a single quarter.

Check out ZTE’s latest premium Axon 9 Pro in pictures

ZTE took the wraps off the Axon 9 Pro yesterday and it wasn’t disappointing one even though we felt it could have come in a little bit cheaper. There is the school of thought which felt the Chinese company could have put a lesser price tag on the model since the company is still dealing with credibility issues. ZTE would have none of that, though, as the Axon 9 Pro comes with a price tag of 649 euros (~$757). Apparently, the company still enjoys a good customer patronage in Germany where the model will first be released this September. Russia is another of the company’s stronghold in addition to China. Apart from the U.S where there is a government-induced apathy, the model should launch globally soon. Axon 9 Pro

We take a look at the Axon 9 Pro design from these pictures that were scooped from Weibo. In truth, the Axon 9 Pro design isn’t in anyway inspiring but looks generic. However, the build still retains the quality for which the Axon series is known. The Axon 9 Pro utilises a glass back design. The Axon 9 Pro has an expansive 6.21-inch FullHD+ AMOLED display sporting a resolution of 2,248 x 1,080 display. It is no longer news that it packs an iPhone X-like notch on the display. The mammoth size brings a high chance of the phone getting dropped which could lave the screen broken. We believe there is some form of Gorilla Glass onboard. ZTE Axon 9 Pro

The device comes with an IP 68 level water and dust resistance and as a result of this, ZTE had to sacrifice the 3.5mm audio port. However, there is a USB-C port for charging and data transfer. The Axon 9 Pro also packs a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor on such a giant size body. The aspect ratio may actually make for easy access to the fingerprint sensor. There is a rear camera setup which is stacked vertically at the top left cornerAxon 9 Pro

Another impressive aspect is the big 4,000mAh battery which firs up the device. ZTE claims the battery can deliver up to 24 hours battery power in just an hour. See more pictures from below.Axon 9 ProAxon 9 ProAxon 9 ProAxon 9 Pro

Lenovo Yoga C630 announced at IFA 2018 is the first Snapdragon 850-powered laptop

In 2016, Microsoft and Qualcomm announced that there’ll be Windows 10 PCs powered by Qualcomm’s ARM processors. Later, we saw the first wave of such devices, powered by Snapdragon 835 SoC. In June this year, Qualcomm announced the Snapdragon 850 Mobile Compute Platform, which is based on the Snapdragon 845 Mobile Platform.

Now, Lenovo has launched the Lenovo Yoga C630, which is the first laptop powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 mobile computing platform. With the new chipset, the company claims up to 30 percent better performance compared to the first generation of Snapdragon-powered Windows laptops.

Lenovo Yoga C630

The new chipset has also come with an upgraded CPU cores and a more capable GPU compared to the older Snapdragon 835. It also has a SIM card slot and packs Qualcomm’s X20 cellular modem for speeds of up to 1.2Gbps, compared to 1Gbps on previous Snapdragon laptops.

The Lenovo Yoga C630 is a convertible 13.3-inch laptop with Full HD display, full-sized keyboard, and roomy & responsive trackpad. It comes with 4GB or 8GB LPDDR4X RAM, and 128GB or 256GB UFS 2.1 storage. It device comes with two USB 3.0 Type-C ports, a headphone jack, and a fingerprint scanner.

Nubia α is a Concept Smartphone that comes with a Flexible screen in a Smartband like design

Nubia has always been great at designing products and their smartphones have always featured an elegant and beautiful design. But at IFA 2018 this year, Nubia is looking to take things to the next level. The Chinese company has just revealed a teaser of its new concept product called as the Nubia α.

nubia α (2)

On first glance, you could mistake the Nubia α as a smart band. I did it too, but taking a closer look at the product as well as the teaser video, you’d start to realise that it’s much more than that. The α is essentially a smartphone! Yes, despite its wearable like appearance, the Nubia α is equipped with all the key features of a smartphone and most of them were revealed in the teaser video itself.

nubia α (8)

The basic design of the device is like a smart band, featuring a metal strap that holds its flexible display in place. The Nubia α is meant to be worn on your wrist, bringing all the important features of a smartphone inside a super compact body. In appearance, the body is a bit bulkier than your regular smart bands, and that’s acceptable given that it likely houses many of the components of your everyday smartphone. There are two buttons on board, one on the right and another one on the left side, placed symmetrically. You’ll find a camera on top, which looks large when compared to its compact body. We can see a microphone opening as well, just besides the camera, which means it should support calls right from the device itself, without the need for any supporting accessories.

The main highlight of the α is going to be its touchscreen flexible display. We don’t have any specs yet, but the overall design looks quite pleasing in the video.

nubia α (1)

The teaser video reveals quite a lot of important features too, like music playback, pedometer, sleep tracking, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, find my phone app, some kind of payments platform and even heart rate sensing. We can also see contacts and call menu which confirms that the Nubia α can make and receive calls.

nubia α (3)

The UI is English and even the teaser video has English subtitles. This should be a good hint that the Nubia α could get a global release. Right now, all the company has revealed is that it will showcase this concept smartphone at IFA. Hopefully, we’ll get more details very soon. Stay tuned!

You can check out the teaser video from here (Miaopai).

motorola one and motorola one power get a silent launch

Motorola has unveiled two new smartphones today. They are the motorola one and motorola one power and both are Android One phones. Surprisingly, Motorola has decided to give them a silent launch via an official blog post. We want to believe this is because of the flak they got with the Motorola P30.

motorola one

motorola one

The motorola one isn’t the international equivalent of the Motorola P30. It is actually the Motorola XT1941-2 that showed up on TENAA two weeks ago (with the exception of the processor).

The phone has a 5.99-inch HD+ Max Vision display with a notch at the top. It also has glass on the back. The motorola one is powered by a Snapdragon 625 processor. Moto fails to mention the RAM and storage capacity but since this is the same device as the one that showed up on TENAA, we believe it is coming with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage based on its price.

The motorola one has a primary 13MP f/2.0 camera paired with a second 2MP sensor. It can record in 4K and has a bunch of camera modes. The selfie camera is an 8MP f/2.2 sensor and can shoot portrait photos.

There is a 3,000mAh battery under the hood, a fingerprint scanner under the batwing logo, and a USB-C port. It also has a 3.5mm audio jack. It comes with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box but Motorola has promised that it will receive two updates to the latest version of Android (so Android Pie and hopefully Android Q) and will be among the first to get upgraded to Android 9 Pie after it launches.

The motorola one is priced at €299 (~$349) and will be available in Europe, Latin America, and Asia Pacific in the coming months.

Motorola One Power

motorola one power

The motorola one power has a 6.2-inch FHD+ Max Vision display with a 19:9 aspect ratio thanks to the notch at the top. It is powered by the Snapdragon 636 mobile platform with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of expandable storage.

There are 16MP+5MP dual cameras on the rear and a 12MP sensor within the notch. Motorola doesn’t mention the battery capacity but since the device already showed up on TENAA, we know it has a 4850mAh (~5000mAh battery).

The motorola one has a USB-C port, a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner, and an audio jack. It runs Android 8.1 Oreo and it will get the same software treatment as the motorola one. So Android 9 Pie as soon as possible and Android Q next year. Both phones will also get three years of monthly security update starting from next month.

Xiaomi Redmi 6, 6 Pro, 6A storage, RAM, color variants and pricing tipped

The Xiaomi Redmi 6 series of smartphones that includes Redmi 6A, Redmi 6 and Redmi 6 Pro will be announced in India on Sept. 5. A reliable Indian leakster has shared information on the storage and RAM models of Redmi 6 series along with their color variants.

The Redmi 6A entry-level smartphone which is the packed with lowest specs compared to the Redmi 6 and Redmi 6 Pro is expected to arrive in 16 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM models.

The Redmi 6 will be coming with slightly better specs than the Redmi 6A phone. It is rumored to come in models like 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 3 GB RAM. The Redmi 6A and Redmi 6 smartphones are likely to hit the Indian markets in colors like Black, Blue, Gold and Rose Gold.

The Redmi 6 Pro is an advanced smartphone compared to other phones in the Redmi 6 series. Its storage and RAM models are 32 GB storage + 3 GB RAM and 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM. The Redmi 6 Pro may launch in India in color hues such as Black, Blue, Gold and Red. As far as pricing of the Redmi 6 series is concerned, the tipster claims that it will be similar to its Chinese pricing.

xiaomi-redmi-6-pro-china

Xiaomi has recently launched Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite Android One smartphones. The Mi A2 is selling with a starting price of Rs. 16,999 (~$239), but the Mi A2 Lite has not arrived in India yet. The Mi A2 Lite is the very same Redmi 6 Pro smartphone that lacks the MIUI skin. At the launch of Mi A2 and Mi A2 Lite, India was not listed among the markets that will be receiving the Mi A2 Lite phone. So, it is very likely that India will be receiving Redmi 6 Pro instead of Mi A2 Lite.

The current pricing of Redmi 6 series for China is as follows:

LG Candy is a sub-$100 phone that doesn’t live up to its name

LG has launched a new smartphone in India called the Candy. The price of the LG Candy converts to less than a $100 and it comes with okay specs. However, we are disappointed it comes in rather dull colors seeing as it is named candy.

The LG Candy has a 5-inch HD display and is powered by an unnamed 1.3GHz quad-core processor. It has 2GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage (32GB max MicroSD card support). There is a 5MP sensor in front for selfies and an 8MP camera on the back. The camera app has a feature called “Flash Jump Shot” that allows you to take several pictures at once and mashes them together into a gif. LG also says it has a low-light photography feature.

LG Candy

Seeing as it has 2GB of RAM, it is no surprise this phone isn’t running Android Oreo (Go Edition), so you’d expect it to run regular Android Oreo, right? No. LG has decided to ship the Candy with Android 7.1.2 Nougat which is disappointing, to put it mildly.

The LG Candy has a 2,500mAh removable battery, Bluetooth 4.2, FM radio, and LTE support. Surprisingly, the phone comes with a USB-C port which isn’t something you find at this price point.

Since it has a removable battery, LG decided to go with replaceable battery covers. So you get four different back covers in the box. The covers are blue, gold, and silver, including the default black that comes attached. However, none of the colors are flashy and attractive which makes you wonder why it’s named Candy.
