ZUK Z1 Does Not Support Quick Charge 2.0, but Charging is Still Fast

ZUK announced its first smartphone, ZUK Z1 last month with flagship features such as a 5.5-inch 1080p FHD display and Snapdragon 801 chip. The highlight of the device was its support for latest USB 3.0 standard on the USB type-C port. This made ZUK Z1 the first smartphone with such configuration. Since the phone came with a massive 4100mAh battery, it was necessary for the device to feature a tech like fast charge. Also, we know all Qualcomm 800 series processors supported Quick Charge 2.0, and hence we expected even the ZUK Z1 to come with this tech. But according to a charging analysis of the international version of the ZUK Z1 flagship by the smart charger manufacturer Tronsmart, the device does not support QC 2.0. This could be due to hardware or software limitations.

wpid-wp-1442491772491.jpeg

Before we move on to see the analysis by Tronsmart, lets take a look at the specifications supported by QC 2.0.

Unlike the QC 1.0, which supported just 5V, the QC 2.0 extends support to 5V, 9V & 12V. It allows a maximum current of up to 3A on the smartphone, which takes the maximum possible wattage to 36W (12V x 3A). All major Qualcomm processors support QC 2.0, like Snapdragon 200, 400, 410, 615, 800, 801, 805, 808 & 810.

Now coming to the actual analysis done by Tronsmart, they tested the international version of the ZUK Z1. This version comes with CyanogenOS and supports charging at 5V 2A. On the other hand, the Chinese variant with ZUI comes with support for 5.3V 2.5A.

wpid-wp-1442491769220.jpeg

Using the original 5V/2A adapter provided in the packaging, the ZUK Z1 charged up to 15% in about 20 minutes. According to their test, the phone was charging at full 2A limit when the screen was off. The total charging time from 0% to 100% of its 4100mAh battery took about 2.5 hours, which is pretty impressive.

wpid-wp-1442491766703.jpeg

However, we had to see whether the phone supported QC 2.0, which can take more than 2A of current. To test this, the guys over at Tronsmart swapped the original charger with their own QC 2.0 supported fast charger at 2.5A. However, even with this charger, the result was more or less the same.

As a result, it looks like the international version of the ZUK Z1 limits current to 2A, which means it does not support fast charging at QC 2.0 standard. On the other hand, the Chinese variant with EUI will charge at a slightly faster rate since its supports charging at 2.5A.

But to be honest, even without QC 2.0, ZUK Z1 manages to impresses us by charging up to 100% within 2.5 hours. So, I am sure, many won’t mind the lack of Quick Charge 2.0 support on the device.

But we would like to know if you are disappointed to hear this news? Or are you fine with the charging time of 2.5 hours?

Let us know in the comments section below.

Meanwhile, hit the source link to check out the detailed charging analysis from Tronsmart of the ZUK Z1.

1byone Amazing Plasma Ball Bluetooth Speaker Review!

This time around we are looking at a very interesting device, which combines a Bluetooth speaker and amazing looking plasma ball in one affordable gadget, which costs just $27.

1byone Amazing Plasma Ball Bluetooth Speaker Review: VIDEO

[embedyt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A6-a7Xud900[/embedyt]

1byone Amazing Plasma Ball Bluetooth Speaker Review: UNBOXING

IMG_2633
The device comes with a micro USB and AUX cables and some instruction manuals.

1byone Amazing Plasma Ball Bluetooth Speaker Review: DESIGN

IMG_2648
The 1byone plasma ball bluetooth speaker is made of plastic but the plasma ball is made of quality glass. Also, there is one speaker on the front side.

IMG_2636

On the front side there are plenty of controls, which include the mode button, which lets you choose between the music sources of the Bluetooth, AUX or MicroSD card.
Also, there is a play/pause, volume up/down button, which also doubles as a skip songs button.
IMG_2644 IMG_2645
On the back side you can find another speaker and some more controls, which include the power imput, AUX input and the MicroSD card slot, which allows the playback straight from your SD storage. Lastly, there is a 3 position power key, which is used to turn on the device and control the plasma light.
IMG_2646
On the bottom there is a soft pad.
IMG_2666
Overall, this plasma ball Bluetooth speaker is well built but the materials used in the construction do not impress. The black plastic part feels cheap and it attracts fingerprints and smudges. Also, my review unit has a misaligned power button. Well, it doesn’t alter the functionality but it doesn’t add any premium look or feel either.

1byone Amazing Plasma Ball Bluetooth Speaker Review: FUNCTIONALITY AND SOUND QUALITY

IMG_2614
Allright, so here’s the fun part. Besides being a regular Bluetooth, microSD card or AUX speaker, it has a plasma ball light, which can be set to light randomly or according to the rhythm of the music you play. But you may ask what is plasma? It turns out that it is one of the four fundamental states of matter, the others being solidliquid, and gas. It uses a power of electromagnetic fields and other shenanigans but all we care about in this review is that it looks amazing.
IMG_2622
You can see the electricity flow with your naked eye and it reacts once you touch the light ball. That is something that you have to see in reality.
IMG_2623
As far as the sound quality, it is not bad for such a cheap speaker but don’t expect to be hear something amazing as the sound lacks depth, the highs are not pronounced enough and the bass is weak. Also, the sound starts crackling at the highest volume setting but the good thing is that the volume output is good enough to fill in even the largest rooms with sound.
IMG_2617
Another shortcoming is that the speaker uses a very old Bluetooth 2.1 protocol. The most annoying part of it is that the speaker makes an irritating sound, which can especially be heard once you play or pause the music from your phone. To avoid that, I suggest you playing the music via the microSD card, which works well but I found that you can only skip tracks forward but not backwards.
It is worth mentioning that this speaker does not have internal battery and it is said to work with the power plug connected only. However, I tested it and it works with a portable power bank and the only difference is that the volume output is lower.
1byone Amazing Plasma Ball Bluetooth Speaker Review: CONCLUSIONS
IMG_2647
The 1byone plasma bluetooth speaker is a device that looks amazing, it will definitely attract a lot of attention from your friends and it is not expensive.
While it does have a decent sound quality for a price, you have to keep in mind some shortcomings like an old Bluetooth protocol, plasticky build and the lack of the internal battery.
IMG_2624
Still, for the price of $27, this device brings a lot of flexibility like the ability to play music via Bluetooth, choose the microSD card or connect your phone or any mp3 player via the AUX input.
IMG_2614
On top of that, you are not getting a regular boring looking Bluetooth speaker everyone knows about as the plasma ball light definitely makes this speaker stand out from the crowd in cheap Bluetooth devices category.

ZTE Will Manufacture the Dual-Screen YotaPhone 3, Launching in Q1 2016

The Shenzhen, China based multinational telecommunications company ZTE Corporation has reached an agreement with Yota Devices to manufacture the YotaPhone 3. Yota Devices is an international private company from Russia that introduced the world’s first dual-screen smartphone by the brand name YotaPhone. The YotaPhone was first launched in December 2013 and the company claims that it has sold more than 3.5 million connectivity devices since then. The latest release of the smartphone series is the YotaPhone 2.

zte yotaphone 3

The dual-screen handsets used to be manufactured in Singapore but now this partnership will outsource the production of the YotaPhone 3 to the manufacturing facilities of the Chinese telecom giant ZTE. The Russian company has also indicated that integration of mobile services as well as software development will be handled in the partnership. Initially it is expected that 100,000 devices will be manufactured to be released in the first quarter of 2016.

The existing YotaPhone 2 runs Android KitKat on a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor. The front 5 inch full capacitive touch screen supports 16M colors while the always-on back screen is a full capacity touch 16-level gray scale Electronic Paper Display. This unique back-screen feature lets users set up a custom cover picture or 100 hour reading time between charges.

Meanwhile, we expect to see another dual-screen smartphone before the end of the year, the UMI Zero. However, the company has not yet revealed a launch date of the device.

Helio P10 MT6755 Spotted On Geekbench, Faster Than Snapdragon 615!

At the start of the year, Mediatek rebranded its high-end lineup as the Helio series. While the Helio X (X stands for Extreme Performance) series was meant to cater to the needs of a flagship with top-notch performance, the Helio P series (P stands for Premium) was targeted at the mid-range flagship smartphones.

Mediatek unveiled the Helio P10 MT6755 octa-core chip on June 1st, however, we have not yet seen a smartphone running this SoC. As a result, the performance of the handset is still not known.Helio-p10-benchmarks

Yesterday, Mediatek MT6755 or the Helio P10 was spotted on the Geekbench results, revealing the performance of its eight-cores for the first time. According to the results, the P10 managed to score 882 in the single core test, and 3371 in the multi-core test. In comparison, the Snapdragon 615 scores only about 700 points in the single core and 2700 points in the multi-core tests on an average. As a result, it looks like the Helio P10 will be much faster than the Snapdragon 615 chipset. However, we have to take into consideration that the 615 is a year old chip. When it comes to performance, the new Snapdragon 620 will definitely give the Helio P10 a run for its money (acc. to rumors).

Other specs of the Helio P10 include 2GHz, True Octa-core 64-bit Cortex-A53 CPU, 700MHz, Dual-core 64-bit Mali-T860 GPU, WorldMode LTE Cat-6, MediaTek’s CorePilot for optimized system load management, and MediaTek’s Non-contact Heart Rate Monitoring which uses the smartphone’s video camera to take heart rate readings.
Well, things are definitely going to get interesting in the mid-range and high-end smartphone segment in the coming months, with a number of powerful chips including Helio X20, P10, Snapdragon 820 and 620 expected to release before the end of the year.

Xiaomi Execs confirms Mi4C Specs: Snapdragon 808 + USB-Type C

UPDATE:

Xiaomi’s official Weibo account confirmed USB Type-C as well. But we still don’t know whether it is USB 2.0 or 3.0.

wpid-wp-1442476896763.jpeg

We have been hearing a lot about Xiaomi’s upcoming mid-range flagship, the Xiaomi Mi4C. Just yesterday we saw a leaked orange box which showed off the colorful packaging of the device. We already know most of the specifications, thanks to the earlier TENAA listing. But now, some of these specs have been finally confirmed by the company executives via Weibo.

xiaomi mi4c specs confirmed weibo

According to Mr. Li who is the Operations Director at Xiaomi, he recently got to play around with the new Xiaomi Mi4C. He says that he was impressed with the built and the performance of the device, and confirms that the phone comes with Snapdragon 808 under the hood. While we were almost sure of this due to the various leaks before, another interesting feature confirmed by him is the presence of the USB Type-C. Yes, it looks like Xiaomi is really targeting the premium mid-range segment with its new Mi4C, incorporating this new age connector into the device.

xiaomi mi4C specs confirmed

What’s more, just a few minutes after Mr. Li posted this on Weibo, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun confirmed the specs. So, we know for sure that the phone will feature Snap 808 & USB Type-C. Also, from the image, we can see atleast two colors, black and white. However, we expect a lot more options when the company announces the phone officially. According to Mr. Li, apart from these two specs, there’s another feature that’s pretty interesting. However, he didn’t reveal it. We can expect it to be either support for entire network (Chinese users love it) or fast charging.

mystery feature of the Mi4C teased
mystery feature of the Mi4C teased

As for the other specs, they are in line with the Mi4i model. So, expect a 5-inch FHD 1080p display, with 2GB/ 3GB RAM & 16GB / 32GB storage options. Given that there’s no memory card slot, the company is also expected to release a 64GB variant. At the back, there should be a 13MP sensor while up front, you will get a 5MP shooter. The battery is said to be above 3000+ mAh.

Finally, for the pricing, it is said that the 16GB will model will retail around 1299 Yuan ($203) while the 32GB model around 1499 Yuan ($235).

If this is the case, then Chinese users are in for a treat, as the specs to cost ratio is just amazing. The phone will be officially launched on September 22, which is less than a week away. So, stay tuned for more details.

Huawei Kirin 950 Chip Details Leaked, Coming Next Month?

Huawei was supposed to incorporate the upcoming Kirin 950 chipset inside the Huawei Mate S that was announced earlier this month. However, the company sticked with its existing Kirin 935 chipset, the same one that powers the Huawei P8 and the Honor 7.

kirin OS 01

To be honest, Kirin 935 is not really a full fledged flagship SoC, given that there are many chips in the market that can easily outperform it. Agreed that the Cortex A53 cores will offer better battery life, but then performance matters a lot in a flagship device.

Well, it looks like we won’t have to wait too long to see the next generation Kirin 950 chip and if rumors are to believed, then the upcoming processor will be quite powerful. Huawei’s CEO Yu Chengdong had earlier hinted that the Kirin 950 was going to be very powerful, even faster than Mediatek and Qualcomm chipsets.

According to the latest information, Huawei will debut its Kirin 950 chipset next month and there will be at least two smartphones before the end of this year that will be powered by this processor. One of these will be the Huawei Honor 7 Plus, which is expected to launch sometime before the end of 2015. The second smartphone to feature Kirin 950 is believed to be the Huawei Mate 8.

kirin 950 specs

As for the specs, the Kirin 950 chip will be based on the TSMC 16nm process. It is said that TSMC’s issues with 16nm FinFET is the reason for the delay of the chip to the end of the year. The SoC will feature quad Cortex A72 cores and quad Cortex A53 cores with a maximum clock speed of 2.4GHz. There will be ARM Mali T880 GPU on board, with support for LPDDR4 dual channel RAM, UFS 2.0 and eMMC 5.1. Further, the chip will come with a self developed ISP, i7 co-processor, Tensilica Hi-Fi 4 independent audio DSP and support for LTE Cat. 10 connectivity.

As you can see, the specs reveal that the Kirin 950 is aimed for the high-end market. The Cortex A72 cores will make sure that the performance is top-notch while the remaining four Cortex A53 cores will help maintain power efficiency. In fact, in the leaked Geekbench benchmark result, the Kirin 950 reportedly scored 1909 in single-core and 6096 in multi-core test. That’s way higher than the powerful Exynos 7420 in both the test (1486 & 4970 respectively).

Anyways, before we get too excited with the news, let wait for some more details about the chip. Huawei has not yet officially announced any details about its Kirin 950 nor has it revealed any event for next month. So, lets hope to hear more about the chip in the coming days.

Today, we give our protagonist blog and we bring you a initial impressions review of the No.1 S3 SmartWatch .

S3 No.1 SmartWatch, one of the best looking

Although they say that beauty is inside, it is inevitable that if a fixture of this type did not catch your eye, do not buy this … The manufacturers know what they are doing and therefore increasingly strive to create more beautiful wearables, sexy and elegant , leaving behind the first design concept born with the SmartWatch; pretty ugly and bulky.

The No.1 S3 SmartWatch could pass for a traditional watch with three color combinations, strap and black dial, brown strap and golden sphere or white and silver belt area To my taste, brown street would win, but as for taste Nothing is written applaud the fact that there are several options to choose from.

Its main round dial is made of stainless steel , while the strap is leather. In addition, the screen is covered by a type of tempered glass to prevent unwanted scratches or cracks.

If you want a SmartWatch it will very well function in this respect, the No.1 S3 SmartWatch is the best you’ll find in the market and to take it on your wrist, is like carrying your phone.

It is the first circular SIM card bearing smart watch, allowing you to enter your address book and make and receive calls as well as other functions that also carry on our smartphone, and use basic apps like calculator or the recorder, check the calendar receive notices have scheduled alarms and remotely control the camera and music player.

No.1-S3-Smartwatch-sonido-1024x604

In addition, concentrating on the fact that, with the option of sending and receiving calls, the No.1 SmartWatch S3 boasts a stereo system and a noise reduction for the quality of the calls is optimal .

The term “hands-free” applies perfectly to this watch because it does not have to press anything to turn it on, simply move the arm and the watch will detect the movement and turn on the display.

It also monitors your heart!

Besides always staying connected with our world, the No.1 S3 SmartWatch also can measure our physical activity thanks to the included pedometer calculates distance, calories and speed. Yes, we know this smartwatches do all the time, even most simple and inexpensive smartbands do this, but if you really want this control over your physical activity and not just to show off to your friends, we recommend you look into the wearable’s heart rate sensor

No.1-S3-cardiaco

Until recently it was wildly discussed and luckily for us we now see the confirmation in the latest releases. The No.1 SmartWatch S3 is no exception and has this interesting and practical sensor.

No.1-S3-sueño-1024x478

We especially stress the battery life, which the manufacturer promises 36 hours of autonomy in standby , which would lead us to charge the smartwatch every two days depending on the heavy or moderate usage. Nevertheless, although it still seems insufficient, it is a good figure compared to the duration of similar devices.

If you have an IOS device, you may run into a few bumps…

Although the manufacturer announces compatibility with iOS and Android, it is important to know that the, support iOS is not 100% compatable. If you use an iOS smartphone, you can not receive any notifications, read messages or control the camera remotely. Which will drive iOS users away from choosing this smartwatch/phone.

A really big obstacle for all iOS users who can’t afford or like the Apple Watch.

Price and Availability

The No.1 S3 SmartWatch will stay the list of our favorite wearables. Really nice outside and a powerful beast inside and with many features, it’s also priced very competitively as well.

The rear camera has a dual tone flash, which should improve white balance and give a better tone to portraits etc.
The front facing camera is an 8mp unit for capturing a half decent selfie.

The phones have micro SD expandable memory slots (up to 128GB) giving the Lite version up to 144GB maximum whilst the high end version has a maximum storage of 160GB and the

The handsets are running the new Mediatek Helio X10 (MT6795) Soc with 4 x A57 and 4x A53 with a GX6650 GPU, I expect that Antutu scores over 50,000 will be possible.
vowney-2
With all the advances that Mediatek have made on GPS on their previous 64bit processors, I can’t see any problems arising on the Vowney GPS, which features support for GPS/Glonass/Beidou.
Cellular coverage is good the Vowney supports  2G,3G and 4G on the following Bands:
GSM:BAND2 BAND3 BAND5 BAND8
WCDMA:BAND1 BAND8
FDD-LTE:BAND1 BAND3 BAND7 BAND20
TDD-LTE:BAND40
Wifi:5G
Lets hope that the release is imminent and that the phone lives up to the (long time coming) hype.

Xiaomi Mi4C could have a 64GB version as well

Xiaomi has once again confirmed via a new teaser that the Xiaomi Mi4C flagship will be announced on September 23. The phone is expected to come in two variants, one with 2GB RAM and 16GB of storage, while the other with 3GB RAM and 32GB of storage. Both the versions will be powered by the flagship Snapdragon 808 chipset. However, it looks like the Xiaomi Mi4C might have another storage variant as well.

xiaomi mi4c 64gb

According to Sun Peng, MIUI Senior Engineer, we may see a 64GB variant of the Xiaomi Mi4C in the coming weeks. He hinted that a 64GB version was possible via his official Weibo page earlier today. This is actually welcome news for users who always crave for more storage. Given the fact that the Mi4C won’t be coming with a MicroSD card slot, it becomes necessary to provide enough internal storage to store all your apps and data. So, a 64GB version at a slightly increased price isn’t a bad idea.

xiaomi_mi_4i_white_screen_press_image

According to a report earlier today, the 32GB variant of the Mi4C could be priced around 1499 Yuan. Now, if this is the case, then we can expect the 64GB variant to be around 100-150 yuan higher. So, the retail price should be around 1599 Yuan which comes to $250 USD. That’s not at all a bad deal, considering the flagship Snapdragon 808 powers the device.

As for the other specs, expect it to be more or less the same as the Xiaomi Mi4i international edition. At the back, there will be a 13MP camera and a 5MP shooter at the front. The battery is expected to be higher than 3000mAh. As for the software, the Mi4C should run on the new Android 5.1.1 based MIUI 7 OS. There’s rumors about an infrared port as well.

We are not quite sure whether Xiaomi will announce the 64GB version along with the 16GB & 32GB variants. But since the event is just a few days away, lets wait and see whether we get to see this high-end storage version at the September 22 event.

Do you think companies should compulsorily announce 64GB internal storage variants for phones without SD card slots?

Futuremark: Apple is still playing catch-up with Android In Benchmark Performance

apple vs android wallpaper

On the day the iPhone 6S was announced, Futuremark – the Finland based benchmarking company – generated a comparative report from two years of 3,000,000 bench mark results from 3DMark, the company’s benchmarking tool for multiple platforms. The report illustrated a chart of data gathered from September 2013 until August 2015.

wpid-wp-1442401382670.png

Back in late 2013, the best apple phone was the iPhone 5S and the best Android phone was the SONY Xperia Z Ultra. The chart showed that Android phones were beating Apple phones by roughly 2000 points or around 20%. As the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge + takes the lead in August 2015, Apple was competing by only presenting the iPhone 6 Plus. However, the Android technology has advanced three times from the Nexus to the S6 and the difference in performance score has got wider. Similarly, the Apple iPads are falling behind Android tablets like the NVIDIA Shield tablet. It looks Android technology will continue to beat Apple devices despite the 3DMark popularity pick up in recent times.

wpid-wp-1442401388804.png

In the Android manufacturer comparison, Samsung has shown an almost one third share of 3DMark results. However, Samsung has shown a decline in 2015 as smaller brands account for almost a quarter of the results this year.

Next Gen LeTV X500 1S model hits AnTuTu, rumored to come with Fingerprint ID

Just yesterday we came across the leaked back panel of an upcoming LeTV model. Now, we have spotted yet another LeTV smartphone with the model number X500. This particular model, most likely called as the LeTV 1S will be the upgraded version of the LeTV One that was announced back in April. As a result, the company might replace the old one with the X500, keeping a similar price tag to attract customers.

wpid-wp-1442378927323.jpeg

The specifications are said to be quite similar to the LeTV One. According to the AnTuTu benchmark listing, the phone will run on the octa-core Mediatek Helio X10 chipset. In case you remember, this is the same chip that powers the super cheap Xiaomi Redmi 2. There will be 3GB of RAM on board along with 32GB of storage. As for the display, you can expect the same 5.5-inch 1080p FHD panel on this new device. At the back, there will be a 13MP camera while up front, expect a 5MP shooter. For software, the phone is said to run on the Android 5.0.1 Lollipop platform with the company’s own skin on top.

wpid-wp-1442379417021.jpeg

The listing shows that the phone managed to score about 45,000 on AnTuTu. Unfortunately, we still have no idea about the pricing of the LeTV X500 1S. If the company wishes to price it around the 999 Yuan mark (to compete with the Redmi Note 2), then the only upgrade we can expect is the fingerprint sensor. Also, you may see the memory cut down to 2GB. This coupled with the beautiful built quality will give it an edge over competitors.

original LeTV One
original LeTV One

Another possibility is that the company could upgrade a few more things along with fingerprint ID and price it at 1499 Yuan. Following the launch, LeTV can reduce the pricetag of the original ‘One’ to 999 Yuan. So, the company essentially will have a cheaper option to compete with the Redmi Note 2 as well as a better specced version to compete with the likes of the Xiaomi Mi4C that’s coming on September 22.

Anyways, we will have to wait and see what LeTV plans to do with the new LeTV 1S X500 in the coming weeks.

Xiaomi Mi4C Pricing Leaked, Snapdragon 808 at 1499 Yuan ($235)?

Ever since Xiaomi announced the Xiaomi Mi4i mid-range flagship in India, the users in China have been eagerly waiting for its domestic version. We have been hearing a lot about this particular device in the past couple of months. Thanks to the TENAA listing, we even know the core specifications of the device.

wpid-wp-1442376755386.jpeg

Earlier today, Xiaomi posted a new teaser on their official Weibo page, which confirms that the Xiaomi Mi4C will be announced on September 22. The company is calling it the “Little Prince”, which is kind of apt, given that the phone will feature quite impressive specs. We have not yet seen the next generation Xiaomi Mi5 model till now and we don’t expect to see it at least till the end of 2015. As a result, the Mi4C could be considered as an affordable flagship model that can succeed the Xiaomi Mi4.

wpid-wp-1442376757988.jpeg

One of the biggest changes between the Xiaomi Mi4i international version and the domestic version, Mi4C is the processor under the hood. The company is reportedly going with the flagship range Snapdragon 808 64-bit hexa-core chip on the Mi4C as compared to the less snappier Snapdragon 615 chip on the Mi4i. Apart from the powerful processor, the Mi4C is expected to come in two variants, 2GB RAM + 16GB of storgae, and 3GB RAM  + 32GB of storage. Like the international version, the domestic version too will feature a 5-inch display with 1080p FHD resolution. At the back, there will be a 13MP camera while up front, you will get a 5MP front facing shooter. Under the hood, you can expect a 3000mAh + battery. As for software, the Mi4C should definitely come with the new MIUI 7 based on Android 5.1.1. There are also rumors about an infrared port on the device.

As you can see, the specs are flagship worthy and are enough to succeed the previous generation Mi4. As for the pricing, the phone is expected to retail at 1499 Yuan ($235) for the top-end 3GB + 32GB storage version.

So, what do you think? Is Xiaomi looking to succeed Mi4, with the brand new Mi4C flagship?

Elephone P8000 Review: UNBOXING

IMG_2806

IMG_2808
The phone comes in quite a huge box and the contents include a power plug, which has a quick charge feature, USB cable, a screen protector and some documentation.

Elephone P8000 Review: DESIGN

IMG_2826
Once you take the phone out of the box, the first thing you will notice is that the phone is big due to its 5.5” display. Also, it is quite a thick device at more than 9mm due to its huge battery, which has the capacity of 4165mAh. It also adds some extra weight and you can definitely feel it in your hand but it’s not an issue for me.
IMG_2824
On the top side you can find a 5MP shooter, earpiece and a sensor light.
IMG_2825
On the bottom there are 3 capacitive keys. The home button also has a notification LED with a nice pulsing effect but my review unit comes from the early batch and the phone does not have the LED.
IMG_2843
The back plate is made of plastic and it sports a faux carbon fibre finish. A 13MP camera with a single LED flash is here for photography and right below it you can find a fingerprint scanner.
IMG_2823
On the bottom there is a speaker grill.
IMG_2828
The Elephone P8000 sports a metal band, which is going around the device and it adds a bit of a premium look and feel.
IMG_2847
On the right side you there is a power key along with the volume rocker and they have a great tactile response.
IMG_2852 IMG_2850
On the top there is a headset jack and the bottom is the place of the micro USB port and the mic.
IMG_3231
Under the hood you can find a non-removable 4165mAh battery, a microSD card slot and two micro SIM card slots. The first one has the 4G LTE support.
Overall, the phone has a good built quality and the choice of materials. For the price of just below $170, it is a solid looking phone.

Elephone P8000 Review: DISPLAY

The 5.5” display on the Elephone P8000 is sharp, has good viewing angles but the colours look on a colder side and sunlight visibility could be a little better. Still, it is a decent panel overall.

Elephone P8000 Review: USER INTERFACE

The Elephone P8000 runs on Android 5.1 with the Elephone’s skin on top of it. You are getting a pretty much stock Android experience with a little bit of customisation done by Elephone. Interestingly enough, they removed the app tray and all the apps sit on the home screens. It’s not a huge problem as you can easily install a third party launcher to fix that.
The phone does not have a lot of extra functionality but Elephone added some personalisation options like a theme engine. You can’t find a lot of themes to choose from but it is a nice touch for a budget device.
It is strange that there are no gesture controls, which were present on the Elephone P7000 but the company added some other little features. If you swipe down anywhere on the screen, it brings the search menu. However, you need to tap the address line to open up the keyboard.
If you swipe down, it brings a little menu, which is mainly designed for a quick customisation of the UI.
The phone also comes with a fingerprint scanner, which is easy to setup. It is placed on the back, which may sound weird but you can get used to it after a few days. At first, the fingerprint security was not very accurate but after a few software updates it improved. Well, it is definitely not the most accurate implementation but it is on par with other budget phones. A bad thing is that the scanner does not work right from the standby mode.
Overall, the UI is very fast and responsive and we need to say thanks to almost stock Android build.

Elephone P8000 Review: BENCHMARKS

Elephone P8000 Review: HARDWARE and PERFORMACE

The Elephone P8000 comes with an octa-core MTK6753 CPU, which is clocked at 1.3GHz, 3GB of RAM and 16GB of expandable storage.
All the specs lead to a great day to day performance. However, some more intensive tasks like gaming are good but not great. You may still enjoy playing 3D games but keep in mind that you will face occasional stutter and some skipped frames. A good thing is that the phone does not heat up too much.

Elephone P8000 Review: MULTIMEDIA

Watching HD movies on a 5.5” screen is great and the playback is smooth. The phone comes with a stock Android music player app and the sound that comes out of the loudspeaker is pretty good. It is nothing exceptional as the sound lacks depth and the volume output could be louder but we are talking about a budget device here.
The sound via earphones is decent but the volume output is pretty low.

Elephone P8000 Review: CAMERA

As the majority of the budget Chinese phones, the Elephone P8000 comes with a stock Mediatek camera app.

Elephone P8000 Review: IMAGE QUALITY

The 13MP camera on the back is capable of producing some decent looking daylight images but camera is inconsistent as some of the shots may look out of focus or at least with soft corners. Also, the dynamic range adjustment is usually off.
Images taken indoors require a steady hand. If you manage to hold your hand steady you may produce some decent looking photos, but sometimes images come out blurry.
In low-light conditions camera struggles to capture details and there is plenty of noise.
Overall, you can capture some decent looking daylight images but photos taken indoors are a hit or miss, and the low-light shots do not impress.

Elephone P8000 Review: VIDEO QUALITY

The video quality is mediocre as on the majority of budget devices. The footage looks dull and there is a visible lack of details. Also, there is no continuous auto-focus. See the video review for a video sample.

Elephone P8000 Review: CONNECTIVITY

IMG_2855
I don’t have any complaints about connectivity options as the call quality along with the signal reception are good, Bluetooth and wifi are also working fine. GPS is fast to get a position lock but it could be a tad more accurate and it is not on par with the phones, powered by Snapdragon chips.

Elephone P8000 Review: BATTERY LIFE

IMG_2836
The 4165mAh battery sounds amazing on paper and I can say it delivers in real life. I was able to get over 5 hours of screen-on time even if I took a lot of pictures and played some games. If you are a light user, you may get 6 or even 7 hours of screen on time, which is not bad for a budget phone.

Elephone P8000 Review: CONCLUSIONS

IMG_2815
The Elephone P8000 is a budget phone that costs just $170 and it has a great build quality, decent screen, good specs and fast day to day performance.
IMG_2840
Also, you may get some good looking daylight images with its camera but not all the time. Other key features include an okay working fingerprint scanner, a good battery, dual SIM card slots with the 4G LTE support.

IMG_2829

A few downsides would be that the phone is huge and heavy, the black borders around the screen don’t look cool at all and the UI lacks some extra features like gesture controls.
Other than that, the Elephone P8000 is a decent offering for the money.

ZTE Axon Elite 4G International Edition

main

Officially launched on the 27th of July the ZTE Axon Elite is on currently on pre sale until the 23rd of September.

Whilst I wait to get my hands on a review sample, lets take a look at the specs and see how it holds up against the current competition.

Screen wise the phone features a 5.5-inch IPS & OGS Full HD displayThe screen is covered by Corning Gorilla glass and has a 2.5D finish.

zte display

The processor on board is the much talked about (normally for the wrong reasons) Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 MSM8994 v2.1 Soc clocked at 2ghz and an Adreno 430 Gpu.

zte axon cpu

Qualcomm have spent a considerable amount of time and effort to reduce the overheating issues that plagued earlier versions of the chip and it has now reached a point where throttling should be kept to a minimum, the 810 is still very much a flagship Soc, currently outperforming all but the latest Samsung Exynox chips.

The phone comes with 3GB of Ram and 32GB Rom, storage is expandable via Micro SD (up to 128Gb)

zte axon ram rom

In a similar fashion to previous phones from HTC the ZTE Axon features dual rear cameras, the main camera is a 13mp Sony IMX214 unit whilst the second camera is a 2mp OV unit with variable aperture (f1.0 – f8.0) the rear of the phone features a dual LED flash setup, the front facing camera unit is an 8mp unit.

zte axon cameras

The advantage of the dual rear cameras is the ability to add depth to images in post processing, the out of focus areas can be changed at will, giving you the ability to adjust Bokeh or as ZTE call it Super Aperture to your own requirements and make subjects really stand out from their backgrounds.

zte super aperture

Build quality looks really good, the body is made from an aerospace grade aluminium magnesium alloy, which ZTE claim provides 80% increase in strength and 30% reduction in weight over standard aluminium.

zte aluminium

Design wise the rear of the phone features an interesting leatherette finish at the top and a cool looking triangular design X design between the rear cameras.

zte body

The back of the phone is curved so should help to make the 5.5″ phablet a little easier to hold.

Audio is sorted out by an AKM AK4961 processor providing industry leading levels of performance of  THD+N (-99dB) and 110dB dynamic range from the newly developed 32-bit advanced audio DAC and cap-less class G headphone amplifier.
