Nokia 7.1 vs Huawei Mate 20 Lite vs Honor Play: Specs Comparison

After a few months of silence, HMD Global just announced a new smartphone: Nokia 7.1, with midrange specs at a modest price. Among the latest important smartphones launched in the last period in the same price range, there are Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Huawei Honor Play, which are two of the best Chinese choices in the global market if we exclude Xiaomi devices. Here we will compare their specs and potentialities.

Design

I like Nokia 7.1 because besides being original, it is a very compact phone and it fits very well in a pocket. It comes with a glass back, a notch and the Gorilla Glass 3 protection and it is the most interesting when it comes to aesthetics and build quality. I put Huawei Mate 20 Lite at the second place, but it is still a very original device with elegant looks, while Honor Play is just a classic metal unibody handset.

Display

Nokia 7.1 has definitely the most interesting display as it supports the HDR10 technology for richer colors. However, note that this is also the smallest panel of the trio as the other two devices have a wide 6.3-inch screen which could be more comfortable for advanced users.

Specs & Software

Honor Play is the best smartphone in terms of hardware as it can offer flagship-level performance. Indeed, it has the Kirin 970 chipset that is the same you can find on the Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 10 Pro. It is also the first phone with the GPU Turbo technology which enhances graphics performance by up to 60 percent while reducing energy consumption by up to 30 percent. Nokia 7.1 and Huawei Mate 20 Lite are more or less at the same level, with their midrange SoCs. Nokia 7.1 has Android One installed (with faster and constant updates), while Huawei phones come with the highly customized EMUI.

Camera

The best camera sensors are on board of the Huawei Mate 20 Lite: it features a total of four cameras, two on the front and two on the back, and both setups come with high resolutions. Both the rear and the front camera setups have a wide angle sensor to increase the field of view and they capture stunning details.

Battery

Huawei Mate 20 Lite and Honor Play have a 3750 mAh battery, almost 700 mAh bigger than the lithium unit of the Nokia 7.1. So, they will probably last much more than its opponent. On the other hand, Nokia 7.1 is able to charge faster due to its smaller battery. And even though it has just 3060 mAh unit, it should be optimized nicely with Android One and it should provide a good battery life due to the very efficient SoC.

Price

With the actual price, Nokia 7.1 does not convince me so much like other HMD Global’s devices and I believe there is something better, such as Honor Play, in this price range. You should choose it if you want the best performance, while if you care more about the cameras, then go for the Huawei Mate 20 Lite. Nokia 7.1 starts from €319 (which roughly translates into $367), Huawei Mate 20 Lite can be purchased for less than €400 or $460 (even €350 thanks to street prices) and Honor Play currently costs about €320 or $360. Before being the winner of this comparison, the Honor Play is also the most convenient device you can get in this trio. If you want to know another device with a similar level of performance, check the Xiaomi Pocophone F1.

Some Xiaomi Mi A2 users report massive battery drain, fingerprint sensor bug fingered

Xiaomi launched the Mi A2 a couple of months back with the device coming as a successor to last year’s Mi A1. Both models fall under Google’s Android One programme and that has made them quite attractive to Mi fans outside China. That is because not only are the devices running pure Android OS, they offer consistent user experience. However, for some users of the Xiaomi Mi A2, the experience has not been so friendly. There are reports of massive battery drain which is apparently caused by a bug.

The battery drain occurs because all the CPU cores run consistently pegged at max speeds, but what causes it isn’t known exactly. However, there is a consensus among most of those affected that the battery drain could be as a result of some bug that affects the fingerprint sensor. This may not be the cause as some users still report the problem persists despite removing all the stored fingerprints.

Some users have detected a quick fix and that is by rebooting the device every hour or two. This sure isn’t a permanent fix as the problem still surfaces after a couple of hours. Other suggested fixes like deleting Google Play Services and factory reset have also been unsuccessful in fixing the issue. Unfortunately, a fix might not be coming from Xiaomi anytime soon, though. The Mi developer team is yet to acknowledge this as a bug. That is perhaps because the issue doesn’t affect all Mi A2 users, including those who have multiple fingerprints stored on the device.

OnePlus 6T leaked protective cases reaffirm its design

The momentum around the OnePlus 6T is building even though OnePlus is yet to disclose officially the launch date for the device.  The design of the flagship has appeared in several leaks including those of the OP6T protective cases. The renders of a new set of cases has once again appeared. The cases were leaked by Mobile Fun who listed the variety of Olixar-branded OnePlus 6 cases on its website.OnePlus 6T

The cases doesn’t really add anything new to what we know about the device but they remind us of the beauty the OP6T would be. The renders also reiterate all what we’ve scooped from previous leaks and rumors. One of such is the water drop notch and the absence of a rear fingerprint sensor. Of course, it is already confirmed that the OnePlus 6T will come with a in-display fingerprint sensor.OnePlus 6T

US judge extends ZTE’s monitors term for violating probabtion

All is not yet Uhuru for Chinese telecoms giant ZTE despite the lifting of the ban on the use of US-made technology. A US court has granted the court-appointed monitors an extended stay that will see then staying for two more years, that is, till 2022. After the ban was lifted, ZTE agreed to allow court-appointed monitors to keep track of the company’s affairs.

ZTE Axon 9 Pro
The Axon 9 Pro is the first model after the lifting of the US ban

The monitor had a term of 2years but that has been extended by two more years due to ZTE’s failure to comply with the directive that it sacked the director’s involved in the illegal shipping of US tech to Iran. This may seem to be an added sanction because ZTE was earlier slammed with an outright ban from using US tech which was lifted only recently. The company also paid huge fines and agreed to split its phone and networking equipment business as part of the settlement. The company will also sell its handsets under a different name in the US.

Do note that there is a second monitor at ZTE appointed by the US Commerce Department. The group will be on duty at the company for 10 years and has deeper access into ZTE’s operations. As part of the new ruling, the court-appointed monitor will get the same level of access.

Samsung dominates premium smartphone segment in India

Samsung has made its way to the top in premium smartphone segment in India in the month of August, thanks to the stellar success of the Galaxy Note 9.

According to the report from data research firm Gfk, Samsung dominated the Indian premium smartphone segment with around 60 percent market share by value and 62.5 percent market share by volume.

The report further adds that Samsung not only led the Rs. 40,000 (approximately $544) and above segment but also reported a 55.5 percent market share by value and 55 percent market share by volume in the Rs. 30,000 and above segment in August.

Commenting on this development, Aditya Babbar, general manager, Samsung India, said:

We are extremely happy with the way our numbers are growing. We are bullish on further consolidating our leadership position in the Indian smartphone market. Our aim is to grow at 20-25 per cent in India in the festive quarter (October-December).

The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was launched in India in August in two variants. The base variant ships with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage for Rs 67,900 (~$923), while the top-end variant packs 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for a price of Rs 84,900 (approximately $1,153).

A couple of months ago, a report from research firm Counterpoint had said that Chinese phone manufacturer OnePlus was the top smartphone company in the premium smartphones market (Rs 30,000 and above) in the second quarter of 2018 with over 40 percent market share.

Lately, Samsung has been focusing on the mid-range segment as well, and is launching devices with some unique features. Recently, the South Korean giant launched Galaxy A7 (2018), which features a triple-camera setup on the back, something that’s not usually found in a mid-range phone.

Nokia True Wireless Earbuds & Pro Wireless Earphones launch for €129 and €69 respectively

The Nokia 8 Sirocco is the only phone from HMD Global that doesn’t have an audio jack but we are sure it won’t be the only one. Since the lack of a 3.5mm jack will become a recurring theme, it only makes sense to have wireless earphones that folks can purchase. This is probably the reason why Nokia announced two wireless earphones today – the True Wireless Earbuds and the Pro Wireless Earphones.

Nokia True Wireless Earbuds

Nokia True Wireless Earbuds

The True Wireless Earbuds, as the name says, is a pair of earbuds that are not connected to each other by a wire. The earbuds are Nokia‘s answer to the Samsung Gear IconX and the Apple Airpods.

According to the manufacturer, each of the earbuds weighs 5g and they are splash and sweat resistant. The Nokia True Wireless Earbuds comes in a cylindrical case that can also charge the earbuds up to 3 times. The earbuds connect via Bluetooth 5.0 and provide up to 3.5 hours of playback or 4 hours of talk time. With the case, it should provide up to 14 hours of playback and 16 hours of talk time. The case charges via USB Type-C.

This is yet another pair of wireless earphones but with a different design. Unlike the one above, the earbuds are connected by a wire and have a neckband design. The wires connecting the earbuds to the neckband are braided.

Nokia says you can pause what you are listening to by sticking the two magnetic earbuds together. Separating them will resume playback. Also, the Nokia Pro Wireless Earphones has a 10-hour battery life and recharges in 2 to 3 hours via a MicroUSB port.

Tencent deploys facial recognition to detect underage gamers amidst China’s gaming addiction crisis

China has been grappling with a monumental rise in cases of gaming addiction especially among teenagers in the country with an estimated 24 million kids affected. The government also blames the country’s widespread myopia on the playing of video games. As a result, several measures are being taken to stem the tide. One of such measures is what Tencent is about introducing on its games. Facial recognition. In case you don’t know, Tencent Holdings is the world’s top-grossing games publisher. Its most popular game is King of Glory, with over 50m daily players in China. The game has even been heavily linked to the epidemic rise of video game addiction in the country.

So it isn’t surprising that the company is adopting innovative ways to tackle the addiction. Last year, Tencent started implementing a policy which saw 12-year-olds and under getting only one hour per day of gameplay time, restricted to before 9 pm. Older kids are only be allowed to play for two hours a day. That may not have worked as smart kids will always find ways of circumventing the laws. The company also recently added a feature which blurred the image if the user got too close.

The use of facial recognition technology to gain access will be tested first on Tencent’s blockbuster mobile game titled, Honour of Kings. Already, some 1,000 new users in Beijing and Shenzhen have been selected to verify their identities through camera checks, according to a recent statement by the company. The facial recognition will verify the identities of Honour of Kings players by cross-referencing with public security databases. The company said it was the first time such data has been used by the gaming industry to screen users. There is no indication when the feature will roll out fully for Honour of Kings, which has 200 million users, or if and when the system will expand to cover other Tencent titles.

OnePlus 6T promotional video once again teases the in-display fingerprint reader

OnePlus‘ upcoming flagship, the OnePlus 6Twill likely have as its biggest feature the in-display fingerprint reader it is expected to pack. That has been the subject of a couple of pre-launch promotional activities the company has been dishing out. The in-display fingerprint sensor is once again the subject of a new OnePlus 6T promo campaign released by OnePlus.OnePlus 6T

The video is part of the “Unlock The Future” campaign and it tries to relate the innovation that would be at play onboard the device to previous monumental innovations such as the Egyptian pyramids, the balloon of the Montgolfier brothers and the Moon landing by US astronauts. The company is basically telling us that it would keep up its innovativeness.

The video also showcases the bottom part of the device and we could see the USB Type-C port at the middle. The port is surrounded by two speaker grills at both sides which should be openings for the mouthpiece or perhaps the audio on the OP6T will see some improvements. We’ll find out about that when the device is launched. As for the launch, OnePlus is expected to launch the device on October 17 in India as seen in a leaked invitation letter. The company is yet to officially announce a date for the launch.
