Yesterday we reported that Huawei managed to surpass Apple for the second position in terms of smartphone market share globally. Now, another report ranks Huawei first in terms of selling smartphones with a notched display.
According to a report from Sigmaintell Consulting, in the first half of this year, Huawei shipped 25.4 million devices having a notched display, making it the leading smartphone manufacturer to ship phones with a notched display.
Apple grabbed the second spot with shipments of around 20.7 million units, followed by three Chinese phone manufacturers Oppo, Vivo, and Xiaomi. Out of the top five manufacturers in terms of shipping phones with a notched display, four are Chinese manufacturers.
Overall, the industry sold over 86.1 million notched devices in the first half of this year — from the beginning of the year until June 30.
Huawei, which currently stands at the second spot in terms of overall smartphone shipments globally, shipped more than 100 million phones this year so far, which means that one out of every four devices that Huawei shipped has a notched display.
The report also reveals some interesting statistics. It suggests that a-Si LCD (including Oxide LCD) screens made up 42 percent of the global shipments in the first half of the year, with 390 million units being moved. LTPS LCD panels had a 36 percent market share from 340 million units sold, while the 200 million AMOLED screens shipped in this period accounted for 21 percent market share.
Sigmaintell estimates that global smartphone shipments totaled 604 million units in the first half of 2018, down 3.3 percent compared to last year. With a drop in smartphone shipments, global shipments of smartphone panels (based on open cell models) also dipped 1.7 percent year-on-year to 930 million units in the first half despite the growing demand for all-screen and profile-cut panels.

Motorola has unveiled its latest flagship device for 2018 – the Moto Z3. The device was announced at an event held Thursday in Chicago, in the United States. The Moto Z3 will be the final flagship in the series for this year as the tech giant hinted that there would be no Z3 Force for the first time since the Moto Z line was introduced. The new model would be released later this month in the U.S as a Verizon exclusive. Also, there is no word on when the model will make its debut in other markets.
Moto Z3 Design & Features
The Moto Z3 is set to become the world’s first 5G phone as the model is 5G-upgradable when Verizon launches its 5G network next year. The model also comes with a 5G Moto mod. In terms of design, the Moto Z3 features a glass body. The device adopts a massive 6-inch AMOLED display with minimal bezels on either side. The design includes Motorola’s signature camera module with dual sensors at the back and since it is glass, the device skips on the rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. Instead, the fingerprint sensor is located on the right side of the device just beneath the volume rockers.
In addition, the rear panel houses the pin connector for the Moto Mods. The device is compatible with all previous MotoMods Motorola has up its sleeves as well as the new 5G Moto mods which the device comes with. The 5G Mod is developed in partnership with Verizon and it is equipped with a Snapdragon X50 modem that will allow customers to eventually take advantage of the carrier’s next-generation network.
Specifications
The Moto Z3 could be called a 2018 flagship with 2017 specifications. The model is powered by last year’s Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 flagship chipset and not the Snapdragon 845 introduced this year. The chipset is paired with 4GB of RAM and there is 64GB of internal storage inside.
In the camera aspect, the Moto Z3 packs dual cameras at the rear which are basically a 12MP + 12MP combo. For selfies, there is a single 8MP sensor. The flagship is crammed with a 3000mAh battery but the 5G Moto Mod delivers an extra 2,000mAh battery power when connected. Also, the device runs on the latest Android 8.1 Oreo OS out of the box but is expected to get a speedy update to Android 9.0 P when it arrives.
Moto Z3 Price and Availability
As stated earlier on, the Motorola Moto Z3 will be available exclusively on Verizon network in the U.S. The device will start shipping on Augst 16. As for the price, the flagship model will be available for just $480 which is quite affordable except that the processor onboard is outdated. Verizon offers those who switch networks and trade in their own device a $300 trade-in credit meaning eligible owners can get this or just $180. Of course, this pricing doesn’t include the 5G Moto Mod. The price of the Moto Mod is yet to be announced but it won’t be available until the start of 2019. Further, Motorola announced a limited-time offer which will see those who purchase the Moto Z3 buy any Moto Mod that cost over $100 for just $50. The company is yet to release details on the global rollout for the model but we expect it to hit Europe, India and China soon.

Barely three weeks after the OPPO A3s was launched in India, the Chinese manufacturer has announced a new variant with a different memory configuration from the one announced earlier. The new OPPO A3s variant comes with 3GB of RAM as well as 32GB of internal storage. The is a decent leap from the 2GB + 16GB memory combo with which the device made its earlier debut.
The memory configuration is the only thing that differentiates the 2GB variant from the new 3GB RAM version. Other than that, you get the same specifications and design on both variants. Do note that the A3s comes with a microSD slot for expanding the storage up to 256GB.
To recall, the OPPO A3s pack a 6.2-inch HD+ FullView display with 1520 x 720 pixels screen resolution, 2.5D curved glass and 19:9 aspect ratio. The display also comes with a notch and 88.8 percent screen-to-body ratio. The device is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor clocked at 1.8GHz along with Adreno 506 GPU. On the camera end, the device features a dual camera setup at the rear comprising a 13MP primary sensor and a 2MP secondary sensor. While at the front, there is an 8MP sensor with support for AI Beauty 2.0 technology. We won’t forget in a hurry the 4230mAh battery under the hood. The phone pack connectivity features such as 4G LTE, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth v4.2, GPS, FM radio, and Micro-USB.
The retail price for the 3GB + 32GB variant is yet to be revealed even though it is already listed on OPPO India’s website. However, since the 2GB version sells for Rs.10,990 (~$160), the 3GB variant shouldn’t cost more than $200. The model will be available online via Flipkart and on several offline retail stores.
There is a chance we will be getting two Mi MIX smartphones from Xiaomi this year. The first is the Mi MIX 2S which was announced back in March and the second which is said to be in development already is the Mi MIX 3.
The biggest change expected in the Mi MIX 3 is its design. A number of leaks have shown the device sporting a near bezel-less display. There are even rumors that Xiaomi may copy the pop-up selfie camera of the Vivo NEX.
Now a new rumor has surfaced saying the next Mi MIX smartphone will arrive on September 15. The info comes from an image that was shared on Weibo. The photo shows the lower half of the phone which is bezel-less, unlike its predecessors.
Apart from the date which is September 15, there are also two other captions. A rough translation of the first one is a question asking if a full-screen (display) is a combination of a notch and a bottom bezel while the second caption translates into “All cut off”. We believe the second refers to all the bezels being shaved off but we are not so sure about the first.
The above launch date is still unconfirmed, so take with a pinch of salt. Nevertheless, a September release date isn’t out of place. The Mi MIX 2 launched in September last year which means its successor is coming exactly a year later.
Not only that, if true, the Mi MIX 3 will be coming six months after the Mi MIX 2S which itself launched six months after the Mi MIX 2. Which prompts one to ask the question “Will Xiaomi refresh the series every six months?”
Smartisan is running a limited time promo that has its phones discounted by as much as ¥700 (~$100). It began yesterday and runs up until the 8th of August.
Xiaomi has launched another product that adds value to the popular Ninebot self-balancing electric scooter models. The product is dubbed Ninebot Go-kart kit and as the name implies, it allows owners of the Ninebot Plus to convert it into a Go-kart racing car.
The Ninebot Go-kart kit doesn’t have a propelling power of its own but utilizes the electric-powered Ninebot as it’s propeller. It has all the features of a typical racing kart with a formula 1 racing car steering wheel but with a ratio of 2.1:1. The kart has a maximum speed limit of 24Km/h. However, there are three modes for users to select from based on expertise. There is a novice mode (8km/h), normal mode (18km/h), and sport mode (24km/h). The kart can also switch to reverse by stepping on the brake pedals twice. There is also a mechanical handbrake fitted to the kart’s own wheels. The tires are non-inflatable and should be ay to maintain.
In addition, the kart kit comes with mobile app support which can display in real-time the kart’s speed, cruising range and fault reminder. The Ninbot Go-kart also can also be retracted when not in use. It has a height ranging from 130cm-190cm and can carry a load of 100kg, meaning it is suitable for use by kids and adults within the weight limit accordingly.
The Ninebot Go-kart kit comes with a fairly decent price tag of 2999 yuan($438) and is presently on reservation in China via JD.com (Jingdong). Jingdong has bundled the Ninebot Plus with the Gokart kit and offers all for 4998 yuan ($739). The kart kit will be available outside of China through third-party retailers like GearBest where it comes with a premium price tag.
Big phablets are great for people who want to use their smartphone as a productivity device, to play games or to watch videos. And they also provide an infinite battery life. The biggest phablets out there from the latest Android generation are Honor Note 10 and Xiaomi Mi Max 3, who were officially announced last month. In this Honor Note 10 vs Xiaomi Mi Max 3 comparison, we will try to help you decide which big phablet you should buy and which is the best one in terms of performance and quality-price ratio.
If you get a big phablet like Huawei Honor Note 10 and Xiaomi Mi Max 3, keep in mind that you have to deal with a huge device that is not comfortable to fit in your pockets. But on the other hand, they are very handy to use as an entertainment monster. Honor Note 10 and Xiaomi Mi Max 3 are smaller than the typical phablet thanks to their very narrow bezels, and this is an added value of both the devices. When it comes to aesthetics, Honor Note 10 wins thanks to its more elegant glass back paired with an aluminum frame. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a full metal unibody design and is uninspiring.
Display
The display is another plus point for the Honor Note 10. It features one of the most impressive panels ever seen on an extra-large phablet. Not only does it have narrow bezels, but also AMOLED and HDR10 technology making its color incredibly vivid and realistic, with very deep blacks. Sadly, it does not feature the Quad HD+ resolution, it would have been amazing on a huge 6.9-inch display, but it still remains an outstanding panel.
Honor Note 10 vs Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Specs & Software
Even when it comes to hardware, Honor Note 10 is way superior! With its Kirin 970 SoC and up to 8 GB of RAM, it achieves flagship-level performances and it is very cool for gaming and multi-tasking. Further, it has the wonderful GPU Turbo technology which enhances graphics performance by up to 60 percent, another added value for gaming. Xiaomi Mi Max 3 instead is just a mid-range device.
Honor Note 10 vs Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Camera
Both devices have pretty good cameras even though they are far from the top camera phones. Unfortunately, there are still no detailed camera samples and the handsets are still not in our market, so we did not have the chance to test them in detail. But on the paper, Honor Note 10 looks better with its dual 16 and 24 MP camera setup and its bright f/1.8 aperture on both the sensors. Note that you can check out our Mi Max 3 video review from here!
Battery
Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a huge 5500 mAh battery, bigger than the 5000 mAh unit of the Honor Note 10. And it even features a very efficient chipset, the Snapdragon 636. From how usually Xiaomi optimizes its devices, I believe that Xiaomi Mi Max 3 will provide a longer battery life. Finally, an aspect in which the Mi Max 3 should win, as it loses under all the other points of view.
Honor Note 10 vs Xiaomi Mi Max 3: Price
Honor Note 10 is definitely the winner of this comparison, but if you do not need a very powerful flagship with a high-end display, note that Xiaomi Mi Max 3 has a more affordable price tag. Honor Note 10 is available in China for $410/€350 in its base variant, while Mi Max 3 starts from $252/€215.
To be honest, it’s not really fair to compare these two devices despite being large sized phablets. They are clearly aimed at two different market segments. The Honor Note 10 is meant to be your flagship phablet, while the Mi Max 3 is looking to be more of a mid-range and budget phablet option. Both the phones are pretty impressive, but if you need something that’s a flagship grade device for gaming and HD streaming, the Honor Note 10 is your best bet. For someone looking for a more budget option, the Mi Max 3 turns out to be a pretty great option too! Personally, a SD710 variant would’ve been a great option for better gaming on the large screen device, but SD636 is pretty good too, since its nearly as powerful as the SD660. In fact, you can check out our detailed analysis of the Snapdragon mid-range family from here!
The OPPO Find X comes in three versions – the base model, the Find X Super Flash Edition, and the Lamborghini Edition. So far, only the base model has been on sale. However, if you want the Lamborghini Edition, you can now pre-order it ahead of its August 10 release date.
The Lamborghini Edition doesn’t just have Lamborghini’s logo slapped on to the back of the phone, the retail box, and accessories. It actually differs on the inside too.
For starters, it is the first OPPO phone to support Super VOOC fast charge which OPPO says can charge its 3,400mAh battery from empty to full in just 35 minutes via a 50W charger. The Super Flash Edition also supports this charging technology.
The special edition Find X also has 8GB of RAM and 512GB of storage. Unlike the other two that comes in blue and red, the Lamborghini Edition has a carbon fiber appearance under its glass back which gives it a more premium appearance. The UI has also been customized.
The rest of the specs are the same as that of the other two models. So you get the same display, Snapdragon 845 processor, slide out cameras, face unlock mechanism etc.
Earlier this year, HMD Global launched the Nokia X6 smartphone in China, which will be available globally as the Nokia 6.1 Plus. The smartphone’s global rollout recently started with Hong Kong. Now, the phone is expected to soon make its way to India.
The company has teased a new product launch event in India through Twitter and has also started a content where participants will get a chance to attend the said launch event. While the company has not mentioned that it plans to launch Nokia 6.1 Plus, it’s most likely to be Nokia 6.1 Plus.
Recently, the phone’s support page went online in India. Given that the phone is currently rolling out globally, there are high chances that HMD Global is planning to launch Nokia 6.1 Plus in India. Other than that, the company could possibly launch Nokia 5.1 or Nokia 2.1. We cannot deny the possibility of HMD Global releasing all three smartphones in India at the same launch event.
To remind you of the specifications, the Nokia 6.1 comes with a 5.8-inch Full HD+ display with 19:9 aspect ratio and 2.5D Corning Gorilla Glass 3 protection. Under the hood, it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 processor, paired along with 4GB RAM and 64GB of storage.
There’s a microSD card slot which enables users to further expand the phone’s storage capacity up to 400GB. In the photography department, the smartphone sports a dual 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 5-megapixel secondary camera sensor with f/2.4 aperture. On the front side, there’s a 16-megapixel camera with f/2.0 aperture for taking selfies.
Running on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box, the smartphone is fuelled by a 3,060mAh battery which also supports fast charging. In India, the device is expected to come in two color options — Blue and White.
We are exactly a week away from the launch of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 9 Unpacked event. In the past few weeks, there have been a bunch of new leaks with some even including pricing details. Samsung itself has also released a slate of commercials teasing features of the phone. Now a new leak has surfaced and it has to do with the pricing in Malaysia.
The Samsung Galaxy Note 9 will launch in New York and availability will follow in the following weeks across the globe. In Malaysia, the phone will be sold by Lazada and pricing for the 128GB and 512GB variants have leaked.
The 128GB version of the Galaxy Note 9 will sell for RM4,299 (~$1055) while the 512GB model will sell for RM5,099 (~$1252). Lazada will provide an option for buyers to pay in installments. These prices are slightly higher than those of Indonesia which leaked earlier this week but not far off.
One quality for which Xiaomi is known globally is its premium but cheap smartphones as well as other products with similar features. The company’s smartphones are either flagship, mid-range or budget class models. Xiaomi doesn’t have a feature phone to its name just yet but has just launched one under the Youpin crowdfunding platform. The Qin1 isn’t just any feature phone instead, it comes with several other features which makes it look like a smartphone. Most spectacular is the artificial intelligence technology which enables the phone to offer real-time multi-lingual voice translation services.
The product is a third-party one which is shipped by Shenzhen Duojiao Technology Co., Ltd and is presently available for funding on Xiaomi Youpin for just 199 yuan ($29). It is expected to start shipping from September 15.
The Xiaomi crowdfunded feature phone is available in two models, Qin1 and Qin1s. Both models basically have the same designs but while the Qin1 is a 2G-only phone, the Qin1s is a 4G phone. That is in addition to having 2G and 3G support. Talking about the design, the featurephone packs a thin body which is just 8.5mm thick. The device is equipped with a compact 2.8-inch IPS screen having a resolution of 240x320pixels. The screen has a Corning Gorilla glass protection. You also get the same button arrangement found on most feature phones.
In addition, the phone comes with Dual SIM/ dual standby support, Wi-Fi, alarm clock, weather report and several other smart features. Moreover, the super feature phone has an IR blaster meaning it can be used as remote control for the TV, air-conditioner, set-top box, and other home gadgets. As stated earlier, the phone offers real-time AI translation with 17 languages supported. There is a built-in 1480mAh battery which can offer up to 15 days battery life on standby, 420 minutes of continuous voice call. The device uses a USB Type-C port and should be the first feature phone with a Type-C interface. It comes in White and Gray colours.
The Nubia Red Magic is one of the few gaming smartphones released this year. It is also the least powerful as it comes with a Snapdragon 835 processor, unlike the others which have a Snapdragon 845 processor.
When it was launched in April, it was unveiled in two colors – red with black accents and black with red accents. Now, Nubia has announced a third color variant.
The new color variant is actually Urban Camouflage which has a mix of light gray, medium gray, and black colors. It also has red accents like the black variant.
Nubia says it is a limited edition and it is only available in the 8GB RAM + 128GB ROM configuration. The price is ¥2999 (~$438) and it is already available on JD.com and the official Nubia site for pre-order ahead of first sales on August 9.
The phone will also be on display at ChinaJoy tomorrow. So if you will be attending, you may want to visit Nubia’s booth to have a look at the device.
The Nubia Red Magic has a 5.99-inch screen with an 18:9 aspect ratio, an FHD+ resolution, and shock resistant glass. It is powered by a Snapdragon 835 SoC with a specially designed cooling system.
In the previous month, BlackBerry licensee Optiemus Infracom had launched the Snapdragon 660 powered BlackBerry KEY2 smartphone in India. Today, the country has received the BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X handsets. These devices are the first 18:9 aspect ratio supporting smartphones from the company. Both the smartphones are packed with dual rear cameras and large-sized batteries. The company claims the Evolve and Evolve X are the most secure Android smartphones.
BlackBerry Evolve and Evolve X Specs and Features
The BlackBerry Evolve features IPS LCD display of 5.99 inches. The 18:9 aspect ratio display produces Full HD+ resolution of 2160 x 1080 pixels. The Evolve X also features the same display that supports 18:9 aspect ratio.

The SoC is accompanied by 6 GB of RAM. Both the smartphones are packed with 64 GB of internal storage. For additional storage, users can make use of a microSD on these smartphones. BlackBerry has included 4,000mAh batteries on both smartphones. These phones are also enabled with support for Quick Charge 3.0. The wireless charging is only available on the Evolve X. Chinese e-commerce giant Jingdong today released the Meizu X8 pre-sale test page with an unrealistic price tag of 6666 yuan. The price tag isn’t much of a surprise as it only shows the price tag is yet to be pegged. The most interesting aspect of the listing is the presence of the Mi logo on the veiled image depicting the X8.
This is likely an error by Jingdong and nothing more but it readily brings to mind the claim by Meizu CEO Jack Wong that the Meizu X8 would be way better than the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE. The X8 is expected to pack a Snapdragon 710 chipset just like the Mi 8SE. He left off without elaborating on the claim. That perhaps has nothing to do with the Mi logo on the product page. By the way, the page has since been removed.
The Meizu X8 joins the Meizu 16 and 16 Plus which were earlier listed for 9999 yuan. Despite the prices of the models not been revealed, the listing seems to suggest that the Meizu X8 will have a price that is two-thirds that of the flagship Meizu 16 and 16 Plus.
Last year, Huawei had launched Maimang 6 smartphone. The very same phone was made available as Mate 10 Lite in European markets. The Mate 10 Lite / Maimang 6 was launched ahead of the Mate 10 series that was unveiled in October 2017. Today, the Maimang 7 has appeared on TENAA with its images. However, the TENAA listing of the smartphone is yet to be populated with its entire specifications. It is very likely that the Maimang 7 will be arriving in the European markets as Mate 20 Lite. Now that the handset has appeared on the website of the Chinese telecom regulatory body, there is a possibility that the company may launch the Maimang 7 soon in China.
A new Huawei phone that has a model number of SNE-AL00 has appeared on TENAA. It was recently revealed that model numbers such as SNE-AL00, SN-AL00B, SNE-LX1, SNE-LX2, SNE-LX3 and SNE-TL00 all belong to the upcoming Mate 20 Lite. As mentioned above, the SNE-AL00 could be landing in China as Maimang 7.
The front image of the smartphone does not clearly reveal whether the Maimang 7 will be featuring a notched display or not. However, the handset seems to be fitted with dual front cameras. The layout of the camera sensors suggest that the Maimang 7 may feature a notched display. If the Mate 20 Lite arrives with a notched screen, there is a possibility that the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro may feature the same kind of display.
A recent report has claimed that because of the presence of 3D structured light module, the Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro could be equipped with notched screens. The rear side of the Maimang 7 which seems to be made out of glass features a vertically arranged dual camera system. Below it is a fingerprint scanner. There is a Maimang logo at the bottom portion on the back panel which confirms the identity of the smartphone. The appearance of the rear panel of Maimang 6 is similar to Mate 10 Porsche Design smartphone.
The Kirin 659 had powered the Maimang 6. Hence, it is very likely that the Kirin 710 may power the Maimang 7. Like the Mate 20 and Mate 20 series, it may also run on EMIU 9 based Android 9.0 P. Last year, the Maimang was released on Sept. 22 in China. Hence, there is a possibility that the company may announce the Maimang 7 by the end of this month or early September.
Meizu 16 and Meizu 16 Plus smartphones will go official on Aug. 8. Previous release pattern of the company suggests that these smartphones should be available for buying one week after its launch. However, the JD listing of the smartphone suggests that the Meizu 16 will be hitting the market a bit late.
