Qualcomm Unveils Reference Design For VR Headset Powered by Snapdragon 845

Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 will not only power the high-end phones of 2018 but will also appear in PCs and VR headsets.

Qualcomm VR Headset

Last year HTC announced the Vive Focus standalone headset powered by the Snapdragon 835. Lenovo also announced the Mirage Solo with Daydream which is also powered by the SD835 at CES 2018.

As the year rolls by, we should see manufacturers release new headsets powered by the newer Snapdragon 845. Qualcomm Technologies has released a reference design for upcoming headsets.

In an official blog post, Qualcomm highlighted the features of the chipset which makes it great for VR and AR headsets. The Adreno 630 GPU is the part of the chipset doing the hard work.

It is said to offer a 30% increase in performance, 30% improvement in power efficiency and more than double the display throughput of the Snapdragon 835.

Qualcomm also announced a new technology called Adreno Foveation which uses a combination of “graphics rendering and eye tracking to understand where the user is looking”.

Snapdragon 845 headsets will also use a combination of 6DoF (degrees of freedom) and SLAM (simultaneous localization and mapping) to track the body and location, allowing you walk around freely within a room without the need for sensors and cables. Qualcomm says this is achieved by the processing power of the Hexagon DSP and the Adreno GPU.

New Honor 9 Lite Update In India Brings Face Unlock

Facial recognition is one of the most important innovations of 2017-18 in the smartphones market, together with the 18:9 displays and artificial intelligence. Thanks to the Face ID found on the iPhone X it is actually possible to unlock the phone in a secure way just by looking at it and making it recognize our face. Now, even Honor 9 Lite has started receiving a similar feature thanks to a new update which is rolling out in India. Unfortunately, it is just a software feature, and it does not bring the same level of security as the iPhone X which also uses a depth sensor for its 3D facial recognition.

Honor 9 Lite

But it is still a quick method of unlocking the phone, so it remains useful for people who care about comfort while using their devices. After you install the new update, if you want to enable the Face Unlock feature, you just have to go to the Settings and register your face. For now, the update is only available for Indian customers, but according to the company, all the units of Honor 9 Lite should get updated by 5th March 2018. Honor 9 Lite is not the first budget phone by Huawei’s sub-brand to get the Face Unlock feature. In January, the face recognition update was brought to the high-end Honor View 10 and recently even the Honor 7X received it in China.

The update which is rolling out on the Honor 9 Lite should also contain other features and improvements, but the company did not release the official changelog yet. According to the company, Honor 9 Lite will be “the most affordable smartphone in the Indian market to support Face Unlock feature and will further emerge as the best value for money smartphone with superior hardware and software configurations”.

Xiaomi Mi 7 Could Arrive with OLED Screen, Always-On Display Function

An unnamed high-level employee with Xiaomi had recently confirmed to Android Headlines that the company won’t be debuting the Xiaomi Mi 7 at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2018. Recent leaks have revealed that the company may launch it in the month of April or May. However, the rumor mill is consistently spilling more information on the smartphone. Leaked firmware files of the Xiaomi Mi 7 that are exclusively available with XDA Developers have revealed some of its key features.

The firmware files have revealed that the Mi 7 is powered by Snapdragon 845 and it is running on Android 8.0 Oreo flavored with MIUI 9. It also carries support for Project Treble.

Rumors have claimed that the Mi 7 will be arriving with 6-inch OLED screen supplied by Samsung. Firmware files have revealed that the Mi 7 will be the first phone from the company to arrive with Always-On Display, a feature that is only on smartphones with OLED screens. It has been also found through the firmware files that the Mi 7 will come equipped with dual cameras like its predecessor.

The other features of the Mi 7 that have been leaked through its firmware files are real-time bokeh in camera app, Electronic Image Stabilization (EIS), NFC. aptX and aptX HD Bluetooth audio codecs by Qualcomm and audio technology by Dirac.

The firmware files have revealed that the Mi 7 is packed with a 3,170mAh battery which is a bit smaller than 3,350mAh battery that powers the Mi 6. Even though there are some references of wireless charging in the different systems apps, it could not be confirmed whether the Mi 7 will carry support for wireless charging.

Rumors have claimed that it could be the first Xiaomi phone to arrive with wireless charging function. However, the publication claims that it came across an unidentified Xiaomi phone enabled with wireless charging support.

It is recommended to digest this report with a pinch of salt since the publication is not completely confident that the firmware files really belong to Mi 7. The probable reason behind it is that there are no direct references to Mi 7 or its codename in the firmware files.

The Xiaomi Mi MIX 2S and Mi 7 are the two rumored devices that are driven by Snapdragon 845 chipset. The firmware files of the Mi MIX 2S that had surfaced in the previous week had carried references for the codename of the handset. Hence, it is speculated that the newly found firmware files belongs to the Mi 7 flagship.

Archos Citee Connect Electric Scooter is an Mi Scooter Look-Alike With a Built-in Android Phone as Interface

Frech company Archos is teasing its latest product which would make its grand entry at MWC 2018 and it isn’t a smartphone. Archos is best known for its smartphone range but the company has set the bar higher by manufacturing an electric scooter which strikingly looks like the Mi Electric scooter in terms of its ergonomic and minimalistic, yet beautiful design.Archos Citee Connect

The electric scooter which would be officially unveiled at MWC 2018 goes by the moniker Archos Citee Connect. Not only is the electric scooter beautiful, it comes with a built-in Android phone which functions as its control interface. The smartphone sits in the middle of the handlebars of the Archos Citee Connect and features a 5-inch display. The handset is also powered by a quad-core processor paired with 1GB of RAM while there is 8GB of storage onboard. Despite its low-end specs, the smartphone runs Android Oreo out of the box and is directly connected to the motor of the scooter, giving users a unique controller for their new method of transport.

Furthermore, the smartphone comes preinstalled with custom software which helps users track their progress, see the battery level of the motor/phone, and check how fast they are going. You also get access to Google Play Store, Google Maps and several other third-party apps on the store which aids users on a trip. t’s 3G connectivity ensures that data usage runs at a fair speed while using Google Maps and other relevant apps In situ. Unfortunately, we don’t know if the smartphone is waterproof since the scooter could be in use while it is raining.Archos Citee Connect

As stated earlier, the Archos Citee Connect features a design which resembles the German Red dot award-winning Mi Electric Scooter. It sports an all-black design with a few streaks of green accent on the 8.5-inch puncture-proof wheels. The motorized scooter also packs an aluminum frame which makes it light enough to be capable of reaching a range of 25 km (about 15.5 miles) on a single charge. The frame is also strong enough to withstand a weight of up to 100 kg. Archos also touts the Citee Connect as capable of reaching speeds of 25 km/h (15.5 mph). Despite the similar configuration, the Archos Citee Connect comes with an initial price tag of €399 (about $494), that’s if you are buying from the company when sales commences this April. The price will increase up to €499 when the product hits traditional store shelves in the summer. This is way higher than the Mi Electric Scooter which had an initial price of  1999 Yuan (around $239) when it first hit the market in China. But then, the cost of the smartphone could also play a factor in the higher price. Besides, it is quite difficult to beat the Chinese manufactures in terms of lowest price offers.

Huawei P20 Plus’ Triple Camera Sensor Revealed Up Close, Different Arrangement

Huawei refreshed the P series back in 2015, getting rid of the Ascend tag, and going with just the P moniker. It’s been three years since this change and the strategy seems to have worked for Huawei as the new ‘P’ series is the company’s face for camera centric smartphones. And after slapping the premium Leica branding on its P series flagship smartphones, the P series models have become a favourite for buyers who are looking for a good flagship camera phone.

huawei p20 plus camera focused close

With most smartphones featuring dual camera setups, it’s has become necessary for Huawei to innovate in order to stand out of the crowd. And it’s almost confirmed that this innovation comes via the addition of yet another sensor to the setup, making it a triple camera module. So, the Huawei P20 Plus and even the Huawei P20 model is expected to feature not two, but three camera sensors at the back. While we have seen some good renders of the triple camera setup on the P20 Plus, what we’ve got today is a closer look at the three-camera sensor arrangement.

It’s worth noting that the alleged Huawei P20 Plus’ triple camera setup in this image is a bit different than previous renders. Moreover, there’s no guarantee that this leak is legit, showing the P20 Plus up close. So, make sure you take it with a pinch of salt.

This picture shows a real life P20 Plus’ camera up close with two camera sensors, one unknown sensor below them, and one more large camera sensor down below arranged vertically. This is different from the other renders in the sense that the flash is placed outside the housing, right on top of the setup. Another render from Onleaks had revealed the triple camera sensor arrangement as two in the housing and one outside. So, this definitely looks different from what we have seen before.

Huawei P20 Plus 3D Render
P20 Plus render by on leaks

With such a powerful setup at the back, it looks like it will protrude quite significantly. The Huawei P10 did well to keep the design neat and clean and this protruding design might not go well with some fans. But still, if the third camera sensor manages to work wonders for the phone, it might just be worth it. In fact, there are phones like the Pixel XL 2 and the iPhone 8 who manage to capture great images with their single camera setups, so it will be interesting to see how a triple camera setup improves the camera experience.

We don’t know how the third camera works. The first two camera sensors could be a regular sensor with monochrome + color sensor combination while the third one could be a telephoto one. Unfortunately, this is just a speculation. The complete setup is said to bring out the best of smartphone camera with 40MP resolution pictures and 5X optical zoom. But we’ll have to wait until March 27 to know what’s really in store for us. While the functionality of the third sensor is still a big mystery, we know one thing for sure — the Huawei P20 Plus will definitely have a three camera setup. The March launch event teasers were kind enough to confirm this and now, our wait begins to know what these smartphone cameras are capable of.

Huawei to Rival Qualcomm, MediaTek By Launching More Smartphones with HiSilicon Kirin Chipsets This Year

The flagship and mid-range smartphones from Huawei are powered home-baked HiSilicon Kirin chipsets. However, the company has also launched smartphones powered by MediaTek and Qualcomm chipsets in the past. Fresh information reveals that the Chinese manufacturer will be launching more smartphones with Kirin chipsets this year.

In 2017, Huawei had shipped 153 million smartphones. However, only 70 million units of its flagship phones were fueled by Kirin chipsets. In other words, less than 50 percent of the 153 million shipped phones were powered by Kirin SoCs.

The remaining number of Huawei devices that includes entry-level and mid-range phones featured chipsets from other manufacturers like MediaTek or Qualcomm. Last year, Huawei had launched MediaTek powered devices like Honor 6C Pro, Honor 6 Play, Honor V9 Play, Huawei Y5 Lite (2017), Huawei Y6 (2017), Huawei Y5 (2017), Huawei Y3 (2017) and MediaPad T3.

The Chinese manufacturer will be reportedly placing more orders of its Kirin chipsets with Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) in a bid to take on the likes of Qualcomm and MediaTek. The ratio of Huawei phones driven by HiSilicon chipsets is expected to cross 50 percent mark this year. Last year, Huawei had launched AI driven Kirin 970 for powering flagship phones whereas the Kirin 658 and 659 chipsets had fueled mid-range phones. There is a possibility that it may launch multiple chipsets this year.

ASUS Joins The Mixed Reality Game With Its Own $429 Headset

Taiwan’s ASUS is the latest to join the Windows mixed reality (MR) train. The manufacturer has announced its own headset called the ASUS HC102 with a $429 price tag.

ASUS HC102

The ASUS HC102 has roughly the same specs we have seen on other MR headsets. It has dual 2.89” LCD displays, each with a 1440 x 1440 resolution and a 90Hz refresh rate. Its field of view is stated as 95°.

There is inside-out tracking thanks to the two front facing cameras with six degrees of freedom (6DoF) and the 32 LED lights on each of the controllers. It also has a proximity sensor, accelerometer, gyroscope, and magnetometer. For connectivity, there is a HDMI 2.0 port, a USB 3.0 port, and a 3.5mm audio jack.

In terms of design, the ASUS HC102 is still the best looking MR headset in the market. Unlike the boring white design of the Dell Visor or the blue coat of Acer’s headset, its front has a polygonal design that makes it stand out.

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwxloWy2wTo[/embedyt]

ASUS has also made it possible to flip the headset without removing it completely just in case you want to take a brief look at the real world.

Selling price for the ASUS headset is $429 and it is available for pre-order on B&H. It is not the most expensive if you compare it to the price of the other MR headsets on the Microsoft store. But it is the most expensive when you realize you can get the others for less on Amazon. The online shopping giant has a sale on MR headsets currently.
