Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth, Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition tipped to debut soon

Fresh information reveals that Xiaomi will be announcing two new phones later this month. A tipster from India has claimed that these new phones could be called Mi 8 Youth and Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition. Hence, it appears that the company could be planning to extend the Mi 8 family by introducing the aforementioned phones.

Very less information is available on the specifications of these phones. It has been revealed that the Mi 8 Youth will be coming in variants such as 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM, 64 GB storage + 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage + 6 GB RAM. It may arrive in colors like Space Gray, Gold and Blue.

The Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition is expected to be available in models such as 128 GB storage + 6 GB RAM and 128 GB storage + 8 GB RAM. It could be unveiled in Black and Gold options.

Xiaomi has recently launched the Poco sub-brand by announcing the Poco F1 smartphone. During the launch event of the Poco F1, the company did not list it among the markets that were supposed to receive the handset. Rumors have it that the very same handset may arrive with a different name in China. It could be either called Xiaomi Mi 8 Youth or Mi 8C. Probably, this phone may carry a price tag of around $300.

The Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition could be the very same Xiaomi Mi 8 flagship smartphone that was announced in May. The only major difference between the two phones could be that the display of the Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition could be embedded with an in-display fingerprint sensor.

Xiaomi’s Poco F1 Armoured Edition and other models will go on sale Sept. 5

Xiaomi has announced via the Poco India Twitter handle that the Poco F1 Armoured edition will go on its first sale in India tomorrow (September 5). The tweet also announces that the Poco F1 will go on its second sale tomorrow. This is coming after a highly successful maiden sales where the company recorded tremendous success, including selling units worth Rs. 2 billion ($28million) in less than five minutes.Pocophone F1

The success recorded during the sales was without the high-end Armoured edition. The edition looks like a popular one and could drive the sales of the Pocophone F1 even higher. As a reminder, the Poco F1 Armoured edition has its back panel made out of Kevlar aramid fibre, a highly durable material that is used for making of bulletproof vests. The high-end model comes with 8GB of RAM paired with 256GB of internal storage. The model will sell for Rs. 29,999 ($419) which is still an amazingly cheap price tag for a flagship. The Armoured edition will be available alongside other variants via Flipkart and Mi.com.

The Poco F1 ticks all the boxes to emerge as a complete flagship except that its price tag betrays that classification. This has been the key feature of OnePlus models but the F1 floors the OnePlus 6 in term of pricing. The device packs 6.18-inch display and is powered by a Snapdragon 845 chipset with LiquidCool Technology.

Xiaomi to release a sub-$300 high-end phone later this month

The POCOPHONE F1 can be said to be the king of the flagship killers with its low price and amazing specs. However, it appears Xiaomi is preparing to launch another affordable flagship.

The info comes from a Weibo user who says the device will launch in mid-September. He adds that the device isn’t the Mi MIX 3 but might be Xiaomi’s return its popular ¥1999 pricing which roughly converts to $292/€250.

Xiaomi affordable flagship

Xiaomi hasn’t launched a flagship with a ¥1999 price tag in the last couple of years due to the increase in the cost of components. The name of the device is not known but it is expected to be a high-end phone. There are guesses it may actually even be the POCO F1 launching in Xiaomi’s home country but with a lesser price tag.

The POCO F1 has a 6.18” LCD screen with a notch. It is powered by the Snapdragon 845 with up to 8GB of RAM and 256GB of storage. There are dual cameras on the back of the device and a single front-facing camera while a 4,000mAh battery powers it.

Leaked image shows Nokia phone with five cameras

Do you remember the rumored Nokia phone with a quintuple camera lens? A live photo of the phone just popped up online.

The image was originally shared on Baidu but has now been taken down. It shows the phone with a total of six holes on the back, one of which appears to be the LED flash judging by the large white circle inside. We believe the other five holes are holding camera sensors.

Nokia Phone with Quintuple Lens

Three of the remaining holes are lined up in a straight line while the other two flank them on each side. There is even the word “ZEISS” printed between the first and second holes. There is also Nokia’s logo in the middle and android one printed at the bottom.

There is no picture of the front but we want to believe that is where the fingerprint scanner is, seeing as there is none at the back. We also believe it has a full-screen display.

Sony Xperia XZ3 Taiwanese version comes with 6 GB RAM

Sony Xperia XZ3 was unveiled a few days ago at IFA 2018 in Berlin and it is already considered the smartphone with the best display ever by the public. Now, the official page of the handset has popped up on the Taiwanese website of the company, revealing that the handset will be slightly different in Taiwan compared with the other markets. While the global version was launched with 4 GB of RAM, the version which will be sold in Taiwan will sport 6 GB of RAM and it will obviously provide a better multi-tasking experience. At the moment, it is still unclear whether or not Sony Xperia XZ3 will be launched in a 6 GB RAM configuration even in other markets.

This is not even the first time we are hearing about a 6 GB version of the flagship for the Taiwanese market: some reports from local media have already confirmed it before. Very weird, especially if we think that the company did not mention a 6 GB RAM configuration during the official event held at IFA 2018 at the end of August. If we exclude the 6 GB of RAM, the rest of the specs of the upcoming flagship remain exactly the same as the variant unveiled in Berlin.

Sony Xperia XZ3 will offer the first P-OLED display ever seen on a Sony device, with a size of 6 inches and a Quad HD+ resolution of 2880 x 1440 pixels, as well as an 18:9 aspect ratio without notch. The 6 GB RAM will be paired with an octa-core Snapdragon 845 chipset by Qualcomm clocked at 2.8 GHz and 64 GB of UFS internal storage. The main camera of Sony Xperia XZ3 is a single sensor with a 19 MP resolution, laser autofocus, and predictive PDAF, while the front camera has a 13 MP resolution. At last, there is a 3300 mAh battery and Android Pie out of the box.

LG Q9 with Snapdragon 660 tipped to launch this year

The V40 may not be the only interesting device from LG that will launch before the end of the year. According to a leakster identified by the nickname MadSimar on Twitter, the Korean giant is working on another device which will be an upper-midrange phone. The tipster has shared some of the main specs of the handset and if we exclude flagships from the G series, this one seems definitely the most interesting LG phone of the year. However, at least from the info shared by the leakster, this device will be a step backward in terms of performance if we compare it with its predecessor LG Q8.

Indeed, LG Q9 is tipped to come with an octa-core Snapdragon 660 chipset by Qualcomm running at a max frequency of 2.2 GHz, instead of the Snapdragon 820 found on the Q8. The chipset will be paired with 4 GB of RAM and 32 or 64 GB of internal storage depending on the variant you will choose to buy. On the other hand, this device will be equipped with a larger battery which should attract a higher amount of potential buyers. The battery is expected to come with a capacity of 3550 mAh. MadSimar also said that the device will be launched with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box.

We do not know anything about the display size, but given the specs, we believe it will have at least a 5.5-inch screen. Further, we expect it to come with a dual camera setup just like its predecessor, with a secondary wide-angle sensor. Unfortunately, no info has been disclosed about the launch date and the possible pricing of this phone. The Q8 came with a small secondary display above the primary one and Hi-Fi DAC, so you can also expect the LG Q9 to come up with another innovative or unique feature.

Honor 8X Max stunning camera samples shot from movies teased

It is no longer news that the Honor 8X Max will be unveiled tomorrow alongside the Honor 8X. We don’t really know so much of what to expect but the various teasers have confirmed that the 8X Max will have a phablet-sized notch display. The specs of the device also hold some prospect, including the camera aspect. Honor’s president George Zhao has shared a couple of camera samples which he claimed were shot using the Honor 8X Max rear camera. Honor 8X

The camera samples are pretty impressive, as they come in vivid clarity. More interesting is the disclosure that the pictures were shot right from three different movies. Zhao did not reveal the names of the movies but promised to reveal more detailed proofs tomorrow, perhaps during the launch event.Honor 8X Read More: Honor 8X Max official images, specifications appear on VMall

Basically, the teaser points to the Honor 8X Max ability to shoot good movies in addition to being used for viewing movies because of its expansive display screen. The Honor 8X Max is expected to feature a 7.12-inch display with a resolution of 2244x1080pixels. The device will also pack a 16MP+2MP dual camera setup at the rear while there will be an 8MP selfie camera up at the front. The device will be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 chipset which brings AI capabilities to the model. The model will be available in three colours; Enchanting Red, Enchanting Blue and Magic Night Black.Honor 8X

Photos of OnePlus 6T’ retail box show it has a water-drop notch and in-display fingerprint scanner

The OnePlus 6T is already in development and while it may not launch until November, pictures of its retail box have surfaced. The photos also confirm some of the specs of the phone.

OnePlus 6 retail box

A New Notch

The OnePlus 6T will come with a notch like the OnePlus 6 but it won’t be a wide one. Instead, it will be the new water-drop style notch that is fast becoming the rave. Housed with the notch is a front-facing camera. We won’t be surprised if it is the same one in the One Plus 6. Above the notch is a slit for the earpiece.

In-Display Fingerprint Scanner

When OnePlus made the switch to an 18:9 display, it was forced to move the fingerprint scanner to the back of the device. If the position of the fingerprint scanner is one of the reasons why you don’t like the OnePlus 5T and OnePlus 6, then you may want to consider the OnePlus 6T.

Based on what’s on the retail box, it appears the fingerprint scanner is moving back to the front. However, it won’t be in the same position as that of the OnePlus 5. Instead, it will be under the display. Yes, an in-display fingerprint scanner. We do hope the scanner on the OP6T is fast seeing as OnePlus is going with the speed marketing.

[envira-gallery id=”209732″]

The retail box is a bit different. It has a sort of marble-like appearance and not plain white like that of previous OnePlus’ devices. There is a large 6 written in front and a OnePlus logo at the top. On the left side is the name of the phone (OnePlus 6T) and on the right is an inscription that reads “Unlock The Speed”.

Sharp 801SH flagship phone with notched OLED panel seen at IFA

In the last couple of months, Sharp has released three new smartphones in Europe – they are the Aquos B10, Aquos C10, and the recently announced Aquos D10. However, all three phones are mid-rangers. There is a possibility it has a special flagship phone for Europe coming soon which is different from the Aquos R2 it launched in Japan earlier this year. The phone was seen at IFA 2018 and there are rumors it may even launch next week in Japan before heading back to Europe.

Sharp 801SH

The Sharp phone whose model number is 801SH is codenamed “Johnny”. It has a 6.2-inch flexible OLED display with a 3120 x 1440 resolution. There is a wide notch at the top but sadly doesn’t house more than a front-facing camera and the usual sensors. This is a bit disappointing as all that space could have housed an advanced face unlock system.

The Sharp 801SH is powered by a Snapdragon 845 processor with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. Unlike the Aquos R2 which has dual rear cameras, this Sharp flagship has just a single camera on the rear. It is a 23MP sensor and it sits in the middle of the device. There is a fingerprint sensor below the camera setup.

The battery capacity of the phone isn’t known and so also is the pixel count of the front-facing camera. One thing that is known though is that the phone is running Android 9 Pie.

Honor Band 4 spotted on the hands of Honor’s George Zhao

Huawei’s Honor brand is expected to hold a conference tomorrow where the Honor 8X and 8X Max will be unveiled. Apart from the Honor 8X models, the brand is expected to go official with the Honor Band 4.  The Band 4 is the fourth in the series and will be an upgrade over last year’s Band 3. Apart from renders and teaser posters, we are yet to see the Band 4 live photo but that seems to have changed.Honor Band 4

Honor’s President George Zhao was pictured during a media interview at the recently concluded IFA exhibition and on his wrist is a smart band suspected to be the Band 4. The Band 4 looks very similar to the ones we had seen on Honor’s teasers. The major highlight of the new smart band which will surely set it apart from its contemporaries is that it has a coloured screen. The color of the screen makes it easy to check out the parameters such as time, heart rate monitor even under the sun. This solves the issue of the screen content unable to be seen clearly under the sun.Honor Band 4

Previous teasers had shown that the Honor Band 4 will come in two variants – a regular wearable version like a regular smartband and a second variant called the Honor Band 4 Running Edition that suggests it can be attached to your running shoes. A second teaser also revealed some of the features the new smart band will have such as NFC, sleep tracking, ability to track swimming and running activities. It will also serve as a shutter button when taking pictures with your phone.

Samsung’s foldable smartphone is coming this year, will lead to increase in demand for flexible OLED displays

The last we heard about Samsung’s foldable smartphone is that the device will launch in early 2019. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. The CEO of the Korean giant’s mobile division, DJ Koh, has revealed that we are getting it this year.

Samsung Foldable Phone

The device is expected to double as a phone and a tablet but Samsung doesn’t want to stop there. Mr. Koh says they are working on providing an experience different from what you get from a tablet when the device is unfolded. The experience has to be different so that consumers can buy it rather than purchase a regular tablet.

But even unfolded, what kind of benefit does that give compared to the tablet? If the unfolded experience is the same as the tablet, why would they (consumers) buy it? So every device, every feature, every innovation should have a meaningful message to our end customer. So when the end customer uses it, (they think) ‘wow, this is the reason Samsung made it’.”-DJ Koh, CEO, Samsung Mobile

Speaking in an interview with CNBC at IFA, DJ Koh said more details of the foldable Galaxy phone will be revealed at the Samsung Developer Conference which will hold in San Francisco this November. However, he did admit that making the device is “complicated” but they have “nearly concluded” it. Do note that even if the device is announced in November, it may not be available for purchase until months later.

Unlike the ZTE Axon M, Samsung’s own phone is expected to have a flexible screen and not a hinge connecting two screens.

In other news, demand for foldable screens is expected to rise following the release of Samsung’s own foldable phone according to a new report. While Samsung may be taking the early lead in supplying manufacturers with flexible screens, competitors will be hard at work trying to grab some of that market for themselves.

China’s BOE may be Apple’s suppliers of flexible OLED displays come next year as the Cupertino-based company is trying to wean itself off Samsung. LG Display is also speeding up development of its own OLED displays so as to start offering them to manufacturers as early as the middle of next year.

Samsung, on the other hand, will supply its own flexible displays to OPPO and Xiaomi, two of China’s biggest brands. It says samples have already been sent to both manufacturers.

Digitimes Research reports it has discovered that most of the smartphones with a foldable screen have an in-folding display. This is said to be easier to make than one that folds outwards. However, issues like dust collection within the folds and the strength are still issues that need to be dealt with.

Nokia 6.1 Plus August security update removes ‘Hide Notch’ option (UPDATED)

UPDATE: Nokia confirms that the option to hide the notch will come back to the device

Nokia 6.1 Plus, which is the global variant of the Nokia X6 launched in China, recently received a new update with Android Security Patch. With this update, the company has removed the ‘Hide Notch’ option which was available earlier. It’s not clear if this is deliberately done or otherwise.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus comes with a notched display. Thus, the company offered an option to hide the notch for those who don’t like this new trend among the smartphone manufacturers. However, with the August Security Patch update, the option to hide the notch is no longer available in Settings.

Nokia 6.1 Plus Notched Display

The changelog of the new update doesn’t mention anything about the removal of the notch hiding option. The Finnish company has not issued any statement yet regarding this, despite people complaining about this on social media.

The Nokia 6.1 Plus features a 5.8-inch IPS LCD display with Full HD+ resolution, 19:9 aspect ratio. It is powered by 1.8GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 636 octa-core processor paired to Adreno 509 GPU and 4GB of RAM. The internal storage is 64GB and has a dedicated microSD card slot for expanding storage capacity.

The phone has a fingerprint sensor placed on the back panel. Since it is an Android One device, it runs on Android 8.1 Oreo stock version. The company has also confirmed that the Nokia 6.1 Plus will be among the first devices from Nokia to receive the latest Android Pie over-the-air (OTA) update.

Camera configuration on the device includes a 16MP + 5MP rear dual camera with large pixels and dual tone dual LED flash. There’s a 16MP snapper on the front side with large 1.0-micrometre pixels and a wide f/2.0 aperture.

Xiaomi WalkingPad to debut soon with competitive pricing on Kickstarter

UPDATE:

The Walkingpad kickstarter campaign kicked off this Tuesday and managed to reach its goal in just an hour! You can check out all about this new Walkingpad from the kickstarter campaign here.

In May, Xiaomi had introduced a mini treadmill called the WalkingPad Mini Treadmill in China through crowdfunding program. It had arrived with a price tag of 1,699 Yuan (~$248). Now the company is introducing a new variant of the WalkingPad mini tread mill for the Western markets. Kickstarter is expected to begin the sales of the WalkingPad later this month or in October with a competitive price tag.
