Apple iPhone 14 Series & iPhone SE Officially Discontinued

The Cupertino based giant has discontinued the iPhone 14 series and iPhone SE 3. Notably, the iPhone SE was the last phone to ever feature the Touch ID fingerprint scanning system, and we might not see this technology return on iPhones ever again. Similarly, Apple has also finally completely transitioned to the USB Type-C port as there is no longer any model officially being sold with the dated Lightning Port for charging and data transfer.

An official discontinuation means that the iPhone 14 series and iPhone SE have been removed from the brand’s official website. Apple products do not have a great track record when it comes to repairability. For example, iPhones are hard to repair due to their non-modular design, the use of proprietary screws and components, and the lack of documentation and software for third-party repair shops. However, the company had announced a while ago that it would prioritize the right-to-repair issue and even provide kits to allow users to repair their own products.

Although these kits have been sold, the company has still not made the expected improvements in many areas. iFixit, stepping in at this point, re-evaluated the iPhone 14 and lowered its repairability score. The platform, has downgraded the repairability score of the iPhone 14 from 7 to 4 out of 10.

iFixit says that the iPhone 14 is still “an improvement over the status quo” thanks to the Self Service Repair program, but it is not as repairable as it could be. The site cites several issues. For example, The iPhone 14 employs software locks designed to restrict users from independently repairing specific components, including the battery, display, and Face ID sensor, without specialized tools and authorization from Apple.

Even with the introduction of the Self Service Repair program, certain repairs like battery replacement remain difficult and time-consuming. Additionally, the company does not offer all the essential parts for full repair capabilities, such as the screen and rear glass, further complicating the repair process for users.

iFixit says that Apple is “falling short of its full potential” when it comes to right-to-repair. The site calls on Apple to make it easier for users to repair their own devices by removing software locks, providing more parts, and making repairs simpler.

Satellite SOS services may become a staple feature in future smartphones

The satellite-enabled SOS function on the iPhone 14 allows users to alert authorities when they are in regions without any cellular connectivity. In New Zealand’s case, the hikers were caught off guard by a rising stream, rendering them immobile on a riverbank. The satellite feature helped them contact rescue services, who swiftly intervened.

However, Canterbury West Air Rescue Service highlighted the enduring importance of PLBs, despite the evolving technology in smartphones. “It’s pretty new technology so Personal Locator Beacons are still recommended on your travels,” they said.

In contrast, Huawei has been incrementally improving its satellite capabilities as well. The recently launched Mate 60 Pro allows customers of China Telecom to make calls via satellite, upping the ante in the ongoing smartphone race.

The iPhone 14 series has been on the market for less than a year, but some users are already reporting battery health issues. A growing number of people have noticed that their phone’s battery health is degrading faster than previous generations. In some cases, battery health has decreased by as much as 10%. This looks concerning, as it suggests that the iPhone 14’s battery may not last as long as previous models.

CreativeBloq first reported that many iPhone 14 users are taking to social media to complain about their battery health. Sam Kohl of Apple news outlet AppleTrack said that his iPhone 14 Pro’s battery health is now at 90% in less than a year, which he described as “unacceptable.”

Another user Andrew Clare also showed that his iPhone 14 Pro lost 10% of its battery health in almost a year, compared to 15% for his two-year-old iPhone 14 Pro. Replies to Sam’s and Andrew Clare’s posts tell a similar story, with many iPhone 14 users reporting rapid battery degradation. In contrast, older iPhones seem to be holding up much better.

There is no clear explanation for why iPhone 14 users are experiencing rapid battery degradation. It could be due to an individual’s usage pattern since some users use their device more rigorously and charge it more frequently. Another reason might be the climatic conditions since many countries have seen record-hot summers this year. However, not all iPhone 14 users are experiencing this issue. Some users have said that their iPhone 14 batteries are holding up better than their previous models.

This is not the first time that we have heard about battery problems with the iPhone 14. In May, we reported that many iPhone 14 Pro users, as well as iPhone 13 users, were reporting severe battery swelling issues. It seems that the number of unhappy customers is growing.

Apple has not yet commented on the matter. The iPhone 15 series is expected to be released next month, and many are hoping that it will provide an improvement.

Apple‘s Emergency SOS feature was talked about quite a lot when it first came out. People wondered if there would be any practical applications for such a niche feature. Well, their concerns will definitely be hushed up once they find out that a group of Canadian residents in Missanabie, Ontario, recently utilized the iPhone 14’s SOS via satellite feature to call for emergency services. This is how they fought a raging forest fire on Dog Lake Island without any available cellular connection.

The fire was also taken care of by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry who arrived later

The new iPhone feature, incorporated in both the 14 and 14 Pro models, enables users to reach out to emergency services during connectivity blackouts. It is primarily used in emergency situations such as when an adventurer gets lost or injured. However, this event marked another practical application for the feature, demonstrating its utility in firefighting efforts.

The duo, Warren Thibodeau and Orel Crack, alongside local firefighter Craig Spooner, embarked on a daring expedition to combat the island fire. They navigated their way to the blazing island, tirelessly spraying water until the fire was quenched. Their valiant efforts were supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) who arrived promptly after being contacted through the satellite feature.

“The new GlobalStar emergency feature of the iPhone 14 facilitated our communication with the MNRF while approaching the burning island,” Eric Belanger, who photographed and shared the event, stated. The following day, a camper from Dog Lake Cottages and Campground, Marc G., confirmed that the MNRF were tidying up the aftermath.

The SOS via satellite feature becomes available when cellular signal is non-existent. The user interface prompts the user to point their iPhone toward a nearby satellite for a signal. This feature gathers data about the reported incident and shares the user’s location with emergency services. Despite the slow data transfer speeds and potential poor connection quality, it offers a lifeline in emergency situations, underlining the revolutionary impact of technology on public safety and disaster management.

Meaning, the iPhone 14 Plus, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max models will also be selling for lowered prices. Unfortunately, the exact pricing details for these higher-end models are still unclear.

Talking about the device itself, the iPhone 14 sports a 6.1-inch Super Retina OLED display. This panel offers 1,200 nits of peak brightness, 2,532 x 1,170px resolution, HDR10, and Dolby Vision support. Under the hood, it is equipped with the A15 Bionic chipset, which is paired with 6GB of RAM and up to 512GB of internal storage. The rear packs a 12-megapixel dual camera setup, while the front also houses a 12-megapixel selfie shooter.

The program is currently available for the iPhone 12 and iPhone 13, as well as select MacBook models. Now, the company has expanded its self-repairprogram to cover its more recent devices, including the iPhone 14 range and the M2-based versions of the 13-inch MacBook Air and MacBook Pro.

The self repair program also has been updated so that you no longer need to call Apple to finish your repairs. You can now use the System Configuration tool to verify and authenticate your repairs yourself. To do this, simply put your device into Diagnostics mode and follow the instructions. This makes it much easier to complete repairs yourself, without having to rely on Apple’s technicians.

Of course, self-repair isn’t for everyone. It can be time-consuming and difficult, and it’s not always clear what parts you need or how to fix a particular problem. However, for people who are comfortable with DIY repairs, the Self Service Repair program can be a great way to save money and get your device back up and running quickly.

Apple iPhone 14 & iPhone 14 Plus gets nearly a Rs 12,000 discount

The Cupertino based giant’s iPhone 14 starts for a price tag of 79,900 INR. But during the Apple Sale Days on Amazon, the base iPhone will be available for purchase for just 67,999 INR. Keep in mind that this is for the 128GB variant. Meanwhile, the 256GB and 512GB storage versions will go on sale for just 89,900 INR and 109,900 INR are being sold for just 77,999 INR, and 97,999 INR respectively.

This marks a notable discount since the base model saw a 15 percent discount, while the 256GB variant saw a 13 percent discount and the 512GB model saw an 11 percent discount. On the other hand, the iPhone 14 Plus which had a launch price of 89,900 INR is now on sale for around 76,900 INR for its 128GB model. Similarly, the 256GB model has a discounted price tag of 86,999 INR, and the 512GB model will be sold for 106,999 INR.

In other words, the iPhone 14 Plus has seen a 14 percent discount for the base model and 13 percent discount for the 256GB model. The top end 512GB model sees a near 11 percent discount. Apple Sale Days event also includes the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max models as well. The iPhone 14 Pro had a launch price tag of 129,900 INR for its 128GB model but has a new discounted price of 119,999 INR. The 256GB model has new price tag of 134,990 INR.

The top end iPhone 14 Pro Max also saw a price drop down to just 127,999 INR, from its original 139,900 INR price tag. The 256GB variant of this device is available for 143,990 INR as well. Lastly, the 1TB iPhone 14 Pro Max saw a slight discount of around 7,000 INR as well. It is now being sold for 182,990 INR. Lowest- and highest-rated iPhones of all time

The iPhone 14 series undoubtedly frequently makes headlines for its features as well as its price. A recent study has revealed surprising insights into the user satisfaction ratings of the iPhone 14 series.

The study analyzed over 600,000 user-generated Google reviews for iPhones from the iPhone 4 to the iPhone 14. While Apple’s Q2 earnings call reported a 99% satisfaction rate for the iPhone 14 family, this new study showed a significant drop in the proportion of five-star ratings for the base iPhone model. The study found that five-star ratings for the iPhone 14 base model dropped by 8 percentage points from the previous year’s iPhone 13, which saw a high of 80% five-star reviews.

This is the largest decline in over a decade, with the only other notable drop being a 4% decrease between the iPhone 4 and iPhone 5. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max also saw a drop in five-star ratings, with both models receiving 76% and 80% respectively, marking an 8% and 6% decline from their iPhone 13 counterparts.

Looking back at the last 12 years of iPhone models, the iPhone 13 Pro Max takes the crown as the highest-rated iPhone with 86% five-star reviews, while the lowest-rated iPhone is the iPhone 5C with only 64% of users giving it top marks. However, it should be noted that this research does not reflect the thoughts of all Apple users. Your expectations for your phone are entirely personal, and experiences may vary accordingly.

Keep in mind that these deals are being offered for Amazon Prime members at the moment, and regular users can find these deals live starting tomorrow (5th May 2023). The company is also offering an additional 1,000 INR discount on select credit cards, exchange offers, or on No Cost EMI.

Apple iPhone 13

The iPhone 13 is a slightly older model but still holds up as a premium phone. This is also reflected in its price tag, since it usually can be found for around 69,900 INR for its base 128GB model. The base model of the 2021 iPhone is on sale on Flipkart and Amazon during their respective sales period. On the former, the device is being sold for as low as 57,999 INR for Flipkart Plus members, while regular customers can buy it for 61,999 INR for the 128GB variant. On the other hand, the 256GB version has its price tag fall from 79,900 INR to just 71,999 INR.

On Amazon, the base 128GB model has had its price slashed to 61,900 INR, down from the original 69,900 INR. And similar to the Flipkart deal, the 256GB model can be purchase for just 71,999 INR as well during the sale. The 1,000 discount deal on select credit cards, no cost EMI, and exchange deals are being offered on this model as well, and the sale is currently available for just Amazon Prime members till tomorrow.

Apple Watch SE

The Apple Watch SE is another model that is available for a discounted deal during the Amazon Great Summer Sale. Similar to the aforementioned deals, the Watch SE deal is exclusive to Prime members till tomorrow. Looking at the online listing, the smartwatch is being offered for an impressive 33 percent discount on Amazon. The GPS + Cellular enabled 40mm variant of the Watch SE is on sale for just 22,899 INR, down from its original 33,900 price tag.

Keep in mind that this is for its Space Grey Aluminium Case with Midnight Sport Band, while the more premium Gold Aluminium Case with Starlight Sport Band is available for 30,899 INR. The larger 44mm Cellular + GPS enabled model has also seen a hefty 33 percent discount. So its price is now down to 24,899 INR from its original 36,900 INR for the Space Grey Aluminium Case with Midnight Sport Band.

Apple iPhone 14 Sale Price Revealed

The iPhone 14 is currently listed at Rs 71,999 on Amazon which is down by Rs 7,901 from its launch price. During Amazon’s upcoming sale, the device will be available at a discounted price of Rs 66,999. This means that the smartphone will be cheaper by Rs 12,901 from its launch price and Rs 5,000 from the currently listed price. On top of that, there are also bank offers, exchange deals up to Rs 20,000, and Amazon Pay rewards worth Rs 5,000. 

For the above-mentioned price, users will get the base 128GB variant of the iPhone 14. The 256GB and 512GB configurations of the device are also likely to be discounted during the sale. However, Amazon is yet to reveal the deal prices on these variants. 

The iPhone 14 packs an incremental upgrade over the iPhone 13. It retains the 6.1-inch 60Hz OLED display and an A15 Bionic processor under the hood. The device has a 12MP rear camera with sensor-shift stabilization along with a 12MP ultra-wide-angle lens. Apple’s iPhone 14 is reportedly facing an issue that has many users complaining about frequent automatic restarts. According to reports from China, some users are experiencing as many as one or two restarts or crashes per day, with many speculating that the issue is related to hardware.

The “Black Cat Complaints” WeChat account received many complaints from users who purchased an iPhone 14 from an Apple-authorized dealer. Some users claim that after a first remote diagnosis and analysis report via the customer service hotline, they were told there were no hardware problems. However, after a second call, they were told it was a software upgrade issue. The issue appears to be widespread, with many users calling for Apple to provide a solution.

One user complained that they were only offered a new iPhone 14 without packaging when they took their device to an authorized after-sales dealer. This user is demanding to exchange the device for a new machine that has not been opened, in accordance with the three guarantee requirements. Another user had their iPhone 14 repaired at an authorized dealer, only to find a small crack in the lower right corner of the back screen that the dealer refused to repair.

It remains to be seen how Apple will respond to the complaints and whether it will provide a solution to affected users. If the issue is related to hardware, it could be an expensive and time-consuming problem for Apple, potentially requiring recalls or widespread repairs. Apple has a reputation for producing reliable devices, so any setback related to the iPhone 14 would be a significant one for the company. As of now, Apple and its authorized stores have yet to respond to the matter.

The value of phones depreciates over time due to several reasons. Technology is constantly advancing, which means that newer models with better features are released regularly. As a result, older models become outdated and less desirable, leading to a decrease in their value. Also, wear and tear is a natural process that occurs with daily use of a phone. Scratches, dents, and other damages can reduce a phone’s value significantly, even though that might differ from device to device. The availability of newer and more advanced technologies at lower prices also affects the value of older models. Finally, market demand also plays a crucial role in determining the value of a phone. As newer models are released, the demand for older models decreases, leading to a decrease in their value. Speaking of newer models, the Samsung Galaxy S23 was launched a couple of months back, but in a short period of time, the value of the device has depreciated by 43.3 percent, which is almost 1.5 times more than the iPhone 14.

The latest data reveals that the Samsung Galaxy S23 has lost 43.3% of its value for a phone in “like new” condition, after just two months post-launch. While this may seem like a significant depreciation, it’s important to note that it’s a notable improvement from its predecessor, the S22, which lost three times its value compared to the iPhone 13 in the same timeframe. The iPhone 14 series, on the other hand, has proven to be the best performer, with an average depreciation of 31.0% after two months.

Unfortunately, Google’s Pixel 7 is the worst performer of the three ranges, losing 45.9% of its value across the range in just two months post-launch. The tech giant has attempted to counter this with a $150 discount on the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, but this still means that the value of the smartphone suffers even more for those who paid MSRP at launch.

When looking at handsets in good condition, the results are similar to those in “like new” condition. The iPhone 14 range regains some of its lost value, with an average depreciation of 35.0% after two months, while the Galaxy S23 drops in value by 47.7%. Despite some improvements from Samsung, the iPhone still holds its value better than any other handset on the market.

Earlier this month Apple followed the tradition of mid-cycle colour update for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. Both devices were announced in the Yellow colour option. Additionally, Flipkart and Amazon are also offering the new colour option at a discounted price. 

The new Yellow colour option of the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus joins the existing Blue, Midnight, Purple, Starlight, and (Product) RED colour variants. The phone is only available in a new paint job. The rest of the key specifications, design as well as pricing remain the same. 

The iPhone 14 starts at Rs 79,990 whereas the Plus variant starts at Rs 89,990 for the 128GB variant. The 256GB option carries a price tag of Rs 89,900 and Rs 99,900 respectively. Both Flipkart and Amazon are offering up to 8 percent instant discounts on the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. This makes the iPhone 14 128GB and 256GB available for Rs 72,999 and Rs 82,999 respectively. On the other hand, the Plus model’s same configurations cost Rs 81,999 and Rs 91,999.  Additionally, both smartphones can be purchased at a lower cost after availing exchange offer on old phone and bank offers. 

The iPhone 14 and 14 Plus feature 6.1 and 6.7-inch Super Retina XDR OLED displays with a 60Hz refresh rate, 1,200 nits peak brightness, and True Tone. They are powered by an A15 Bionic chipset coupled with 4GB RAM and up to 512GB storage. The smartphones have 12MP + 12MP rear cameras and a 12MP selfie snapper.

Apple introduced Emergency SOS satellite connectivity on the current-generation iPhone 14 series last year. Currently, the feature works in six countries including the US, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK. The Cupertino-based tech giant officially announced yesterday that the service is expanding to six more countries. 

Apple’s Emergency SOS via Satellite feature on the iPhone 14 series allows users of the device to send emergency message alerts in remote places where there is no cellular or WiFi coverage without any special hardware. It’s worth noting that the feature only works outside in open spaces with a clear sight of the sky and without any obstructions like trees, buildings etc. The groundbreaking feature is coming to Austria, Belgium, Italy, Luxembourg, Netherlands, and Portugal later this month. This will make the Emergency SOS feature on the iPhone 14 series operational in 12 countries in total. 

The iPhone 14 Pro recently bagged GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards in the ‘Disruptive Device Innovation’ category for the Emergency SOS feature. It has been praised numerous times by first responders and rescue teams for saving lives of customers who have been struck in emergency situations. 

In other news, Apple also announced a Yellow colour option for the iPhone 14 and 14 Plus. The Apple iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus is now available in yellow. The new color option for the latest Apple iPhones 14 series provides more options for customers to choose from. This comes after it was leaked that Apple was adding yellow to the iPhone 14 colors. The rumor has now been confirmed by Apple.

The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus yellow colorway option is now orderable. It is coming as a mid-cycle update for the models released in September 2022. The mid-cycle color update for the iPhone 12 was purple in March 2021, while the iPhone 13/ iPhone 13 Pro got a green upgrade in 2022. There are now six color options for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus offerings. Previous colors were Starlight, Midnight, Purple, Blue, and Red. Apple has continued to provide mid-cycle color upgrades for its iPhone models and this year was no different.

Apple has left the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max color options unchanged. These colorways are Space Black, Silver, Gold, and Deep Purple. Interested iPhone fans could pre-order their yellow iPhone 14/ iPhone 14 Plus models from March 10 while shipping will commence on March 14. The iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 yellow option models are priced as the other colors. The iPhone 14 starts at $799 while the iPhone 14 Plus starts at $999.

Apple fans may soon have a new color option for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus. According to a recent Weibo post shared by the Japanese blog MacOtakara, the tech giant is planning to make the upcoming models available in yellow this spring.

While the Weibo account’s track record is unknown, MacRumors reported that multiple sources have confirmed Apple’s PR team is planning a product briefing next week, which could be related to the new iPhone color option or something else entirely.

Adding new color options mid-cycle has been a common tactic for Apple to boost sales and media attention. Last year, the company introduced new Green colors for the iPhone 13 series, and in April 2021, the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini became available in Purple.

The current color options for the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus include Blue, Purple, Midnight (Black), Starlight (White/Silver), and Product Red, while the iPhone 14 Pro models come in Deep Purple, Gold, Silver, and Space Black. It’s unclear whether the Pro models will receive the yellow color option or if Apple will hold off on adding a new color for them. While some fans may be excited about a potential yellow iPhone 14, others may feel that the bright hue is better suited for only non-Pro models.

Apple’s next iPhone, the iPhone 15 Pro, is reportedly set to come in a new, deeper red color option. Unlike the bright “Product Red” color of previous models, this new shade is said to be darker and more subdued. Apple iPhone 14 Pro Takes Lead over Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra

The Galaxy S23 Ultra uses a custom overclocked Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 SoC developed in partnership with Qualcomm and Samsung. Additionally, due to the size of the phone, it has more assertive cooling solutions. However, despite being newer and having these features, the S23 Ultra is not able to beat the iPhone 14 Pro. According to CompareDial’s Geekbench test (assuming Geekbench 5), the iPhone 14 Pro outperformed the Galaxy S23 Ultra by 21.02%.

In the single-core performance test, the iPhone 14 Pro received a score of 1,874, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra received only a score of 1,480. The iPhone 14 Pro outperformed the Galaxy S23 Ultra by 21.02%. However, when it came to multi-core tests, the gap narrowed to 14.86%. The iPhone 14 Pro maintained its lead with a score of 5,384, while the Galaxy S23 Ultra received a score of 4,584. Interestingly, in terms of single-core performance, the older iPhone 14 with the A15 Bionic and a 5-core GPU outperforms the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra.

Apple’s success with A-series processors was not a secret anyway. Similar results were obtained in a test conducted last year, and the iPhone 13, which came with the A15, had better scores than the Galaxy S22. In fact, according to the single-core score, the iPhone 13 performs better than the S23 series. However, these tests do not mean that one device is necessarily worse than the other.

Real life use cases are much more important than synthetic testing. Not many of us even manage to push the limits of a mid-range phone. While this shows us how far mobile technologies have come, it reminds us that these tests do not reflect real life. At the end of the day, whether you choose the iPhone 14 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy S23 Ultra, both phones are great options.

In 2022, the global smartphone image sensor market faces a downturn, with annual smartphone shipments falling by nearly 11%, and the trend of multi-camera adoption slowing down. This led to a contraction in CIS (CMOS image sensor) sales and a correction of oversupply in inventory, especially for 8MP and Low megapixel sensor. According to Counterpoint’s Smartphone Camera Tracker, global smartphone image sensor shipments are down 15% compared to 2021, with all major suppliers seeing declines of varying degrees. However, there are a few vendors who manage to stand out in this regard Challenging market.

Sony was the only major vendor to report year-over-year revenue growth thanks to Apple’s camera upgrades. Apple, which contributes an estimated half of Sony Mobile’s CIS revenue, further improved iPhone camera specs during the year. Apple released the iPhone 14 series in last September, which with a lot of features. One of the standout features of these devices was the use of OLED displays manufactured by LG and Samsung Display. According to recent reports, Samsung used an additional inkjet printing process in the production of these displays in order to protect them from moisture and oxygen. Here are the details…

Samsung’s inkjet process protects iPhone 14 Pro’s display from moisture

This process involved the use of inkjet equipment after the thin film encapsulation (TFE) process, which is normally used to protect OLED screens from moisture and oxygen. The additional inkjet equipment was used to create a separation between the hole in the display and the rest of the OLED panel, as well as to flatten areas with uneven heights.

The use of inkjet equipment in this way is a departure from Samsung‘s previous production methods, which only involved the use of inkjet equipment during the TFE process. It is believed that Apple requested the use of the inkjet printing method in order to seal the edges of the Dynamic Island, a feature of the iPhone 14 Pro’s display. Samsung Display’s subsidiary, SEMES, supplied the inkjet equipment used in the process.

LG Display, which also produced OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro Max, is said to have applied the same method. It was reported that LG encountered some difficulties in meeting Apple’s requirements for the iPhone 14 Pro Max display, but these issues seem to have been resolved. The iPhone 14 Pro lineup consists of two models: the 6.1-inch Pro and the 6.7-inch Pro Max, with Samsung supplying OLED displays for both models and LG supplying the display for the 6.7-inch Pro Max model.

It is worth noting that Samsung Display has previously used inkjet equipment to apply a Micro Lens Array (MLA) to smartphone OLED displays, including the Galaxy S21 Ultra. However, it is believed that this equipment has not been used for MLA since then, and may have been repurposed for other purposes.

Overall, the use of inkjet equipment in the production of the OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro lineup represents a significant shift in Samsung’s manufacturing process. The addition of this equipment was reportedly necessary in order to meet Apple’s requirements for the Dynamic Island feature and to ensure the durability and lifespan of the displays. It will be interesting to see if this method is continued in future iPhone models or if it remains unique to the iPhone 14 Pro lineup.

A new report has revealed that Apple is apparently dominating the global smartphone revenue segment this year. The company took a massive lead over its competition, so here are all the details.

According to a Counterpoint Research report, the Cupertino based giant has managed to keep the throne and has even managed to raise its revenue share in the global smartphone market despite smartphone sales overall seeing a fall of 3 percent year on year. During this time, there was also a 12 percent decline in shipments, but there was a 10 percent hike in the average selling price (ASP).

In the total sales, 5G phones made up to 46 percent of shipments in quarter, which marks a new high. In the third quarter of this year, Apple took a dominating lead with a 42 percent global smartphone revenue share. Notably, this was up from just 37.1 percent from the same period a year prior. During the period between, July and September 2022, the brand’s iPhone 14, iPhone 14 Pro, and iPhone 14 Pro Max saw strong sales.

The iPhone 14 Plus did not begin shipping till the first week of October 2022. While Apple took the lead, South Korea’s Samsung took the second spot with an 18.3 percent revenue share. Xiaomi came in third with an 8.3 percent share, while Oppo and Vivo accounted for 6 percent and 5 percent respectively. So the iPhone 14 series is clearly performing well in the market.

There is one single device that can be considered the best rival of this phone, at least until the release of the Samsung Galaxy S23. Naturally, we are referring to the iPhone 14 by Apple. Xiaomi 13 vs Apple iPhone 14

Design

It is very hard to compete with an icon. A lot of people will prefer the design of the iPhone 14 as it is iconic and sports great build quality. The handset is made with a glass back and an aluminum frame, it has the classic notch and the classic camera module of the latest iPhones, as well as better water resistance: with its IP68 certification, it is able to go up to 6 meters deep underwater without damage. Specs & Software

If we consider the performance of these two phones, the most important role is not played by the hardware but the operating system. They both feature flagship-class hardware departments, but the iPhone 14 is able to perform better because the iOS operating system has better optimization, even though the phone has inferior hardware. This said the iPhone 14 is equipped with an Apple A15 Bionic chipset running at a max frequency of 3.23 GHz, 6 GB of RAM, and up to 512 GB of native storage. With the Xiaomi 13, you can get a Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 mobile platform running at a max frequency of 3.2 GHz, up to 12 GB of RAM, and up to 512 GB of UFS 4.0 native storage.

Camera

The Xiaomi 13 is equipped with better cameras on the rear side. It has a triple rear camera including a 50 MP main sensor with OIS, a 10 MP telephoto shooter with 3.2x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultrawide lens. Unfortunately, the iPhone 14 lacks a telephoto sensor: it only has a pair of 12 MP sensors, including the main camera and an ultrawide one.

Battery

The battery found on the Xiaomi 13 is much bigger if compared to the one found on the iPhone 14 by Apple: we are talking about a capacity of 4500 mAh against just 3279 mAh. However, the difference is not huge in terms of battery life because iOS 16 has better optimization in terms of energy consumption. However, there is a huge difference in the charging speeds because the Xiaomi 13 supports 67W fast charging and 50W fast wireless charging.

Price

It appears that Apple has saved more human lives yet again. This time around, the company’s iPhone 14 helped in getting a couple rescued thanks to its dedicated set of emergency features that rushed the rescue efforts.

The news arrives from a tweet from the Montrose Research and Rescue Team. As per official notes, the incident took place on the Angeles Forest Highway in the Angeles National Forest in California, US. The couple faced a single vehicle accident that had their car fall 300 feet down the side of a mountain. This had them be stranded in a damaged car in a remote side of the canyon. This is where the iPhone 14 came into play.

For those unaware, the Cupertino based giant’s offers Crash Detection feature on the iPhone 14 series that can determine whether you’ve faced an vehicular accident. “On December 1, 2022, at around 2:00 am, the Alaska State Troopers were notified that an adult male traveling via snowmachine from Noorvik to Kotzebue had activated an Apple iPhone Emergency SOS via satellite on his iPhone after becoming stranded. Working with local search and rescue teams, the Apple Emergency Response Center, and the Northwest Arctic Borough Search and Rescue Coordinator, the NWAB SAR deployed four volunteer searchers to the Nimiuk Point area directly to the GPS coordinates provided by the Apple Emergency Response Center. The adult male was located and transported to Kotzebue by the volunteer search team. “There were no injuries reported to troopers,” reads a post by the Alaska Department of Public Safety.

How to use emergency SOS satellite

According to Apple emergency SOS via satellite can help you connect with emergency services under exceptional circumstances when no other means of reaching emergency services are available. If you call or text emergency services and can’t connect because you’re outside the range of cellular and Wi-Fi coverage, your iPhone tries to connect you via satellite to the help that you need. Samsung has recently announced that a similar feature will appear in the new Galaxy S series.

• You need iPhone 14 or iPhone 14 Pro with iOS 16.1 or later.
• To use iPhone 14 SOS satellite feature, open the Settings app.
• Tap Emergency SOS.
• Under Emergency SOS via satellite, tap Try Demo, then follow the onscreen instructions.

The service is free for the first two years with every iPhone 14 activation. Unfortunately, it is currently unclear how much the price will be after and is also expected to make its way outside North America, to France, Germany, Ireland, and the UK later this month.

According to recent reports, Samsung is dominating the Apple iPhone 14 OLED supply this year. Apple is expected to use more than 120 million OLED panels for the iPhone 14. Almost 70% of these panels will be produced by its biggest competitor.

The company is expecting to ship mid-80 million units out of that total of 120 million. Its closest competitor is LG Display is expected to ship mid-20 million units while BOE is to ship up to 6 million units. Samsung Display supplies OLED panels for all four models; LG Display supplies LTPS for the regular 6.1-inch model and LTPO for the 6.7-inch Pro Max model. BOE only supplies LTPS for the 6.1-inch regular iPhone.

OLED displays are among the most expensive parts used in iPhones. Considering all this, it is concluded that Apple makes money for Samsung from every iPhone it sells. However, this does not change the fact that the US company has outstripped all its competitors in the premium smartphone market.

Apple has rolled out an update of its iPhone 14 lineup that now supports Emergency SOS via satellite. The Apple iPhone 14 series consists of the iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, and 14 Pro Max. The Emergency SOS feature allows compatible iPhones to send emergency messages in places where there are no cell towers in range. The new feature is only available in the US and Canada for now.

Apple had spent more than $450 million in research to bring its iPhone 14 series to be compatible with emergency service via satellite. The Cupertino-based tech powerhouse had collaborated with Globalstar whose 24 low-orbit satellites cover the range in North America. The cutting-edge satellite connectivity is within the L- and S-bands spectrum for mobile devices. Barriers like trees could block signals for main smartphone connectivity but are strong enough for the SOS function.

Once an Emergency SOS via satellite connection has been made, the user will need to carry out an SMS conversation and provide more details including your medical ID and emergency contacts. The feature also works with the Find My app to locate the device if lost or stolen. It can be used to keep an emergency contact and the information is safeguarded via end-to-end encryption. The update can be tested in a demo mode in iPhone 14 models in the US and Canada.

Apple advises that the Emergency SOS via satellite feature works well in areas where there is a clear view of the sky and horizon. There are also on-screen instructions that guide the connectivity via satellite. There are no indications yet whether this feature will be used in other jurisdictions.

The newly launched Apple iPhone 14 lineup has an all-new feature called Emergency SOS via Satellite Mode. Almost all the smartphones in the market come with the SOS mode, but the one found on the new iPhone 14 lineup is an advanced feature. The Satellite-based SOS mode on the new iPhones wil go live for the US and Canada later this month. Now, the brand has officially disclosed how much effort was put into developing this new system.

According to the company, “When an iPhone user sends an Emergency SOS message, it is received by one of Globalstar’s 24 low-Earth orbit satellites, which move at speeds of around 25,749 km/h. The message is subsequently transmitted by satellite to custom ground stations situated at strategic spots around the world.”

Cobham Satcom in Concord, California, designed and constructed new high-power antennas exclusively for Apple. Each ground station has numerous antennas that communicate with the satellites. When the message is received by the ground station, it is forwarded to either emergency services or a relay center staffed by Apple-trained emergency professionals.

The Cupertino firm paid for key upgrades to Globalstar’s satellite network and ground stations. As a result, over 300 Globalstar personnel will support the new iPhone 14 Emergency SOS service. Apple added that Emergency SOS via satellite makes use of a band reserved for mobile satellite services.

Apple spent $450 million on the entire Emergency SOS initiative. The majority of that money was spent on developing infrastructure for the feature in collaboration with satellite provider Globalstar. The feature is currently limited to US and Canadian markets, and the brand may expand the availability of the feature in the future. But as of now, the brand does not have any plan to expand outside the US markets.

The Covid restrictions are affecting the production capacity at its iPhone factory in Zhengzhou. However, the company remains intact with its policy of “prioritizing the health and safety of the workers in our supply chain.”

The “strong demand” for the iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max is still growing due to better specifications and the presence of the new Apple Bionic A16 chipset. However, the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus sales are not as expected and even the company has scaled down its production capacity.

Some reports last month pointed towards a 30% decline in iPhone production due to Covid restrictions at the Foxconn production facility. Moreover, some workers even left the Foxconn facility due to long stays inside the building with limited food supplies during the Covid outbreak.

The Cupertino giant is gradually shifting away the production capacity from China to other countries. Apple started the iPhone 14 production in India to bridge the gap between demand and production. We expect Apple to normalise manufacturing with a similar approach if the prolonged Covid restrictions are affecting the overall capacity in China.

But unfortunately, this consistency has finally come to an end. The Cupertino based giant is rumored to raise the pricing for its next gen iPhone 15 series, with global economics playing an integral role in the price hike across the globe.

According to a CNBC report, the US Dollar is quite strong among the global currencies. So, customers in the US do not have to worry about the price hike. Although, a stronger dollar value also implies that the foreign currency being converted givers lower dollar value to Apple. Thus, the brand hiked iPhone pricing to keep its revenue more consistent. An example of this is the Pound Sterling, which was valued higher than the dollar a year ago is now weaker.

As per Apple CFO Luca Maestri, “Essentially every currency around the world has weakened against the dollar. The strong dollar makes it difficult in a number of areas. Obviously, our pricing in emerging markets makes it difficult, and the translation of that revenue back into dollars is affected.” The CFO further added that “In some cases, for example, customers in international markets had to … they saw some price increases when we launched the new products, which is not something that, for example, U.S. customers have seen. And that’s unfortunately the situation that we’re in right now with the strong dollar.”
