Sprint sues AT&T over false 5G claims, terms it misleading advertising practices

The new era technologies are taking over the old ones with better features and safety nets. The latest 5G technology is still evolving, and every major manufacturer and service provider is looking to get their hands on first. It has even lead to some false claims in the market, which are misleading the end consumers. Similarly, two United States carriers are fighting over a similar instance. A major telecom carrier in the US has sued another telecom carrier for calling their advanced 4G LTE network as “5G Evolution”.

In detail, Sprint took the above instance seriously and went ahead to file a lawsuit against AT&T. It has filed a lawsuit to ban the use of “5GE” term on the customers’ devices. Even, they are also seeking an injunction to prevent the use of “5GE” tags while advertising and marketing.

Sprint said that AT&T is labeling an advanced 5G LTE (Long Term Evolution) as 5G and deceiving customers. In a lawsuit of 23 pages filed at federal court in New York, Sprint claims that “AT&T has employed numerous deceptive tactics to mislead consumers into believing that it currently offers a coveted and highly anticipated fifth-generation wireless network, known as 5G. What AT&T touts as 5G, however, is nothing more than an enhanced fourth-generation Long Term Evolution wireless service, known as 4G LTE Advanced, which is offered by all other major wireless carriers.”

Sprint consolidated it stand by saying that they have invested a lot of capital in building 5G network in nine cities this year. Even though AT&T is also working on to develop the 5G network across States but the marketing and advertisement practices they have adopted are wrong. They are wrongly using the 5GE term to label the advanced 4G LTE network leading an unfair advantage over other carriers. They emphasized that 5G networks will be 10-40 times faster than the current 4G LTE advanced networks. AT&T is deceiving the customers to make them believe the old networks as 5G.

In response, AT&T said that they are not deceiving anyone and would fight the lawsuit. They are terming 5GE network as “an evolutionary step to standards-based 5G.” AT&T further said “We understand why our competitors don’t like what we are doing, but our customers love it,”

Samsung Galaxy M30 design leak reveals triple rear cameras and front appearance

Samsung recently launched the Galaxy M10 and Galaxy M20 smartphones in India. Rumors are rife that the South Korean company will be also debuting the Galaxy M30 phone in India. The specifications of the smartphone had leaked at the beginning of this year. A fresh leak has revealed the front and rear design of the smartphone. It confirms that it will be equipped with a triple camera module.

The schematics of the Galaxy M30 reveals that it will be featuring an Infinity-V AMOLED display. The waterdrop-style notch on the display features a 16-meagpixel front-facing camera. The bottom edge of the phone has a USB-C port. Interestingly, the Galaxy M30 schematics do not confirm the presence of the 3.5mm audio jack.

The Galaxy M30 features a gradient color rear. The handset measures 159 x 75.1mm. A triple camera module includes a 13-megapixel primary sensor, a 5-megapixel lens and another 5-megapixel sensor. An oval-shaped fingerprint scanner also resides on the back side of the phone. The front and rear camera configurations mentioned in the schematics leak matches with the leaked specs of the phone that had surfaced at the beginning of this year.

The Galaxy M30 is rumored to feature a 6.38-inch display that will deliver 2220 x 1080 pixels. The Exynos 7904 SoC that powers the Galaxy M20 is also expected to fuel the M30 phone. The SoC is rumored to be supported by 4 GB of RAM and 64 GB of storage. There is a possibility that the phone also come in another variant with 6 GB of RAM and 128 GB of storage. The smartphone will be drawing power from a behemoth 5,000mAh battery. Apart from Blue, the smartphone is also expected to hit the market in Black color.

There is no information available on the price tag of the Galaxy M30. The smartphone is expected to go official as early as next month in India. A recent report had revealed that apart from bringing the Galaxy M30 phone, the South Korean company is also planning to introduce Galaxy A10, Galaxy A20, Galaxy A30 phones in India in this quarter.

Huawei’s semiconductor spending witnessed a staggering 45% growth in 2018

According to the new report from Gartner, Samsung Electronics and Apple managed to retain the top positions in terms of semiconductor chip buyers in 2018, representing 17.9 percent of the total worldwide market.

However, this indicates a 1.6 percent decrease compared with the previous year. On the other hand, the top 10 OEMs increased their share of chip spending to 40.2 percent in 2018, which is up from 39.4 percent in 2017.

Huawei saw around 45.2 percent growth in terms of chip spending and thus managed to jump ahead of Dell and Lenovo to grab the third spot. Dell and Lenovo trails behind Huawei with 29.6 and 16.4 percent growth.

The report also reveals that eight of the top 10 companies in 2017 remained in the top 10 in 2018, with Kingston Technology and Xiaomi replacing LG Electronics and Sony. Xiaomi rose eight places to the 10th position, increasing its semiconductor spending by $2.7 billion in 2018, a 63 percent growth year-over-year.

The Gartner report says that the continued market consolidation in the PC and smartphone markets had a significant impact on the semiconductor buyers’ ranking. The big Chinese smartphone OEMs, in particular, have increased their market domination by taking out or purchasing competitors.

Thus, as a result, semiconductor spending by the top 10 OEMs increased significantly, and their share reached 40.2 percent of the total semiconductor market in 2018, up from 39.4 percent in 2017. The report adds that the trend is expected to continue, which will make it harder for semiconductor vendors to maintain high margins.

Gartner also predicts that the share of total memory chip revenue in the total semiconductor market will be 33 percent in 2019 and 34 percent in 2020, higher than its 31 percent share in 2017.

The TENAA listing of the Meizu Note 9 on TENAA has now been updated with its front and rear images. The images reveal that the smartphone features a waterdrop notch enabled display.

LG G8 ThinQ’ (128GB version) price leaks, costs over $900

The LG G8 ThinQ is expected to launch later this month at MWC 2019. The flagship phone will come with a slight change in design and new internals. The price of the phone in Canada has leaked and provides a rough estimate for other countries.

The price was shared on the web by a Reddit user. The image shows the 128GB LG G8 ThinQ will be priced at CAD 1199.99 (~$903).

The G7 ThinQ was sold for CAD 1049.99 ($790.68) by Bell and Virgin Mobile but it had 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. For CAD 150 more, the LG G8 ThinQ brings a more powerful processor, 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. The 64GB model should sell for less.

As usual, we expect those who pre-order will get significant free gifts along with their phone. Those who pre-ordered the LG G7 got a free 43-inch LG 4K UHD Smart TV.

The LG G7 ThinQ launched for $750 in the US, so the LG G8 ThinQ which has more storage may sell for $800 or a little over that. In India, it launched as the LG G7+ ThinQ with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage for INR 39,990 (~$562), much cheaper than the 64GB version sold in North America. The G8 may cost over $600 but it will likely still be one of the cheapest flagships.

Moto G4 Plus gets Android Oreo as Moto Z3 Play receives Android Pie (US for both)

The Moto G4 Plus was announced back in 2016 and it ran Android Marshmallow out of the box. It later received an update to Android Nougat as promised. The phone is now receiving its Android 8.1 Oreo update more than a year after Oreo was announced.

Why is the update coming so late? It is actually Motorola‘s fault, to be honest. When the phone was announced, Motorola promised an update to Android N and Android O as Nougat and Oreo were known as back then. However, when the list of Moto devices getting Android Oreo was released in 2017, the Moto G4 Plus and the Moto G4 were missing.

This caused a lot of backlash and they eventually agreed to uphold their promise to update it, though on the condition that it would take time since it was “unplanned for”. Really, Motorola/Lenovo?

Now the update which will definitely be its last is finally rolling out to devices in the US. The changelog says the update brings all the features of Android 8.1 Oreo and also comes with December 2018’ security patch.

Realme to open exclusive offline stores later this year

Realme made its entry into the Indian smartphone market last year as an offshoot of OPPO. Its phones which belong to the mid-range category have also launched in Indonesia and Vietnam. This year, the budding company plans to grow bigger and part of its plans is to open brick and mortar stores.

The company’s CEO, Madhav Sheth, disclosed that they plan to “open exclusive stores in India where prospective buyers can get a hands-on experience of the entire portfolio of Realme devices that would include accessories as well as smartphones”. These stores will begin popping up across India in the second half of the year.

At the moment, you can actually purchase Realme-branded phones offline at partner stores. Initially, interested buyers who didn’t want to buy online could only get them from Reliance stores but they are now collaborating with several multi-brand retail stores located in several cities in India.

Realme has also revealed its plans to double production by opening a new factory in Greater Nodia. It already has one there but it plans to increase its current output of between 60 – 80 million smartphones per annum. The manufacturer will also announce new models this year.

After an infinite amount of leak and rumors, Motorola finally unveiled the Moto G7 series. The most powerful and expensive device of the new line-up is the Moto G7 Plus that comes with midrange-class specs and a not so high price tag. Given the relevance of this handset, we think it is time to compare it with the best concurrency currently available. Two of the most important device in the actual midrange segment are surely the new Redmi Note 7 by Xiaomi and the Honor 10 Lite by Huawei. Does Moto G7 have a higher value for money or it is better to go for these other Chinese companies? Go ahead with this comparison to find out.

Design

Motorola Moto G7 Plus does not sport the most catchy and futuristic design, but it comes with very nice build quality. It has glass on both front and back, as well as an aluminum frame just like flagship phones. Further, it is splash resistant. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 comes with even more resistant glasses thanks to the Gorilla Glass 5 protection, but it has a plastic frame making its body a bit less solid. However, the company claims that the phone is water resistant, even though there is not any IP certification to prove it. Honor 10 Lite does not offer so strong materials, so I exclude it from this comparison. It is a hard challenge between Moto G7 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, but I would choose the latter because it looks more beautiful thanks to the gradient glass back.

Display

At least on the paper, Motorola Moto G7 Plus seems to be the device with the best display. Its LTPS technology should help to provide a lower power consumption as well as more controlled temperature ranges. Further, Moto G7 Plus has stereo speakers which enhance the multimedia experience. However, it will be not easy to notice the differences between these panels as their specs are very similar and all of them are midrange-class. Even the size is more or less the same.

Specs & Software

If you are an advanced user and you play games or you care about multi-tasking, Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 offers a slightly better processor: the Snapdragon 660 by Qualcomm. If you prefer to have more internal storage, Honor 10 Lite is the only which comes with up to 128 GB of storage that you can furtherly expand with a micro SD card. Moto G7 Plus is inferior to both Honor 10 Lite and Redmi Note 7 due to its good but lower-end SoC.

Camera

Moto G7 Plus and Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 are the best camera phones on the paper and, even though we still did not test them, we believe that Moto G7 Plus will be surprising. The last three generations of “G Plus” devices are all excellent camera phones, even though they do not reach flagships. And we believe that Moto G7 Plus will be able to compete with the stunning 48 MP sensor of the Redmi Note 7 without issues. It may even be better thanks to its brighter aperture, OIS and accurate autofocus. And we think the same about the front camera. But in order to give a definitive verdict, we will have to click some photos.

Battery

We think that in 2019 putting a 3000 mAh battery on a midrange phone as Motorola did with the Moto G7 Plus is not enough unless it was optimized in an excellent way. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7 comes with a 4000 mAh battery and not only it wins the comparison, but we can consider it one of the longest lasting last-generation smartphones on a single charge. Honor 10 Lite sits in the middle with its sufficient 3400 mAh unit. On the other hand, note that Moto G7 Plus features a very fast charging technology, so it can be charged in a low amount of time.

Price

Moto G7 Plus will cost about €300/$340, definitely too much for a midrange with Snapdragon 636, unless its cameras will be something extraordinary. Xiaomi Redmi Note 7, that is the clear winner of this comparison, was launched for just $150/€132, while Honor 10 Lite costs about €210/$240.

BlackBerry KEY2 to get new red variant in Europe

The BlackBerry KEY2 launched in June 2018. It was announced in two color variants – Black and Silver but it has been reported that it will get a red variant soon just like that of the KEY2 LE‘s Atomic Red.

The info comes from Mysmartprice and they say the new color variant is set to launch in Europe. It may launch in other countries too but there is no confirmation yet. Just like the BlackBerry KEY2 LE, the red KEY2 will have a red frame and red accents for the keyboard.

The KEY2 may be nearly due for a successor but if you are looking for an Android phone with a physical QWERTY keyboard, this is probably the best option even though it is pricey.
