Chinese 5G phones to cost as much as $80 more than non-5G models

This year is said to be the year of 5G. Network operators are planning to roll out coverage to more cities and a number of manufacturers all have 5G phones in their lineup for the year. These 5G smartphones are expected to sell for more and it has been reported that Chinese manufacturers may set a price range for them.

5G technology

DigiTimes reports that sources in Taiwan’s supply chain have said that Chinese phone makers may adopt a “5G+500” formula. This means 5G phones will cost about ¥500 more (~$74).  The breakdown for the increase is given as about $50 for 5G modem and application processors and about $30 for new antennas, circuit boards, and other related materials.

Consumers should be able to afford the new pricing and manufacturers should still be able to make profits while still recording an increase in growth.

Huawei clarifies misleading report of its phones deleting images from Twitter

The spotlight shone on Huawei recently when a report emerged from China that the company’s phones delete images saved from Twitter by users. Just like when the US thought it had discovered the weapons of Mass Destruction Saddam Hussein had purportedly stockpiled in Iraq. Some respondents were almost certain that Huawei had included a backdoor on their phone’s operating system. The discovery was first reported on Reddit and the post could even mislead some to believe it was indeed a backdoor that could give such access. Well, until Huawei officially responded to the report.

The Chinese tech giant has released a statement that explains the cause of the glitch. The company hinted that it had investigated the issue and discovered that whenever users of certain devices download an image using versions 7.78.0 and 7.77.0 of the Twitter app, a folder is automatically created by the app bearing the same name as the image. The app then immediately deletes the image in the background. Huawei phones come with built-in image protection feature which immediately alerts the user via a pop-up message. The thing is, the image isn’t deleted rather, it can be found at the following location: File Manager/picture/Twitter.

Apparently, there is a glitch on the Twitter app for Huawei phones and this should be fixed in no distant time.

Samsung files trademark application for “Neuro Game Booster”, is this its version of GPU Turbo?

Last year, Honor announced a graphics processing acceleration technology called GPU Turbo. It improved the efficiency of the GPU and also reduced power consumption. Phones that have gotten the feature now handle mobile games better. Now it seems Samsung will also launch its own version as it has trademarked the name “Neuro Game Booster”.

Samsung applied for a trademark for the name on Monday, January 21 at the European Union Intellectual Property office. The description says it is an electronic game software for mobile phones. It also says it is an AI software.

Samsung Neuro Game Booster

Samsung’s Neuro Game Booster should bring improved performance in mobile gaming just like Honor’s GPU Turbo. However, we can’t say yet if it will be available only to phones powered by Samsung’s Exynos processors or it will also be available to those powered by Snapdragon processors.

Smartisan’s XiaoPeng joins Realme as design director

In order to survive, Smartisan has sold some of the tech-related patent rights to Bytedance, a Chinese internet technology company working in the field of AI. While addressing the media at the launch event of a new social app, Chat Bao, Smartisan’s founder revealed that the financial condition of the company is not too bad but to survive a back-up is a must. In another revelation, according to Yicai, Smartisan’s No. 2 employee XiaoPeng has resigned from the company and has joined Oppo’s subsidiary, Realme as a design director.

smartisan luo
Smartisan founder Luo YongHao

XiaoPeng joined the Realme last year in the month of December. Oppo announced its new sub-brand, Realme in May 2018. The motive of the Realme is to compete against Redmi devices in India. Realme is purely made in India device, as it is manufactured in India using Oppo’s production line. Their first device Realme 1 gained a good number of sales.

In-depth, Smartisan employees have been asked to re-sign the contracts with Bytedance for the six-month probation period. As per new terms, employees have to surrender the equity of Smartisan and sign a new contract to sustain in the company.

There are many confusions in the new Bytedance acquisition of tech-related patents from Smartisan. Many departments and resources have been re-aligned to different works within the company. Now, Smartisan’s Bullet Messenger resources have been aligned to the Bytedance’s K-12 education, an education-related product. Bytedance is popularly known for their work in the AI field. Moreover, they have launched plenty of education-related products for students last year. Even, they have launched an app which offers a content related to culture, audio books, wealth management, etc.

Earlier, Luo approached many big giants in China such as Baidu, Ali and others for a possible merger, but due to lack of interest things didn’t work for Smartisan.

Now we hope this new shift in Smartisan would help them to recover from the financial crisis.

Huawei teases 5G Wi-Fi Router launch on 24th January in China

5G technology is going mainstream this year and to be the first-movers into the 5G space, Huawei is all set to launch products compatible with the new technology. Before the company officially launches its first 5G smartphone, it is all set to launch a 5G router.

Huawei has today teased a 5G Wi-Fi router launch by shared a poster on Weibo. The text on the poster reads — “5+6=3.X? is the taste of new products! January 24, 2019, for you!”, confirming that it will be launching a new product on 24th January in China.

Huawei 5G Wi-Fi Router

The poster doesn’t clearly state that the 5G Wi-Fi router will be launched. But looking closely at the “5+6=3.X” text in the poster, we can see that it says 5G, clearly hinting at the 5G technology. The ‘6’ could be representing Wi-Fi 6 which is the abbreviation for the Wi-Fi 802.11 ax.

The Wi-Fi 802.11 ax standard promises higher data transfer rate and larger capacity along with higher energy efficiency. Further, it’s being reported that the Wi-Fi 6 can reach the speed of up to 11Gbit/s. It is expected to be widely used in smart home devices or IoT-based devices.

This year will witness the 5G technology go mainstream and Huawei wants to be the one leading the game. At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Huawei’s chairman Hu Houkun (aka Ken Hu) announced that the company has deployed 5G networks in 10 countries and will soon deploy in 20 more countries.

LG Premier MWC 2019 teaser video hints at LG G8 touchless gesture navigation feature

The Mobile World Congress 2019 is all set to kick-off next month in Barcelona, Spain and everyone is eagerly waiting to see what the smartphone companies bring this time. With MWC 2019 nearing, companies have now started teasing their upcoming products and features.

Joining the list of such companies is South Korea-based LG, which is teased a new touchless gesture-based navigation feature, likely for its upcoming flagship LG G8, through a teaser video posted on YouTube related to LG Premier event at MWC 2019.

LG G8 Teaser Video MWC 2019

The company has scheduled a launch event on 24th February CCIB, Barcelona and has also sent out ‘Save The Date’ invites. LG is likely to launch the G8 smartphone at the event and will then showcase it at MWC 2019 which commences from 25th February and ends on 28th February.

Recently, it was reported that the LG G8 will come with “Sound on Display” technology in which instead of having a traditional speaker, the sound is produced by vibrating the display panel. The sound is produced by vibrations of the screen caused by ‘exciter’ which is positioned behind the screen. LG is already using this technology in its Crystal Sound OLED TVs.

According to the reports, the phone will come with a waterdrop notch — something that most of the smartphone manufacturers have already adopted in order to offer higher screen-to-body ratio. Under the hood, the phone is likely to be powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 flagship chipset.

The phone’s renders featuring a notched display and dual rear camera sensors surfaced online a few days ago but the company’s Head of Global Corporate Communication denied that claiming that the renders are correct but are not of G8.

Xiaomi Dual Flex / MIX Flex, the world’s first double folding phone revealed in hands-on video

At the start of this year, a leaked video showing the foldable phone from Xiaomi was leaked by popular tipster Evan Blass. The leaked video had revealed that the left and right portions of the screen could be folded to transform into a compact device. Today, Xiaomi President Lin Bin shared a hands-on video of its foldable phone. It appears to be the very same device that was leaked by Blass earlier this month. The company is yet to announce the official name of its phone with double folding design. Bin has said that he has thought of names like Xiaomi Dual Flex and Xiaomi MIX Flex for the foldable phone. He has asked Weibo users to suggest a good name for the phone.

Samsung is expected to debut its first foldable phone in the coming month. The smartphone can be opened like a book to access its foldable 7.3-inch display. However, Xiaomi’s upcoming foldable phone will be sporting a unique design. Xiaomi President Lin Bin claims that it will be the world’s double folding mobile phone. As it can be seen in the video, the screen of the phone can be folded from right and left sides.

Bin has stated that the device shown in the video is an engineering unit. The company had overcome various technical difficulties to build a phone with double folding design. Some of the problems the company was able to overcome are related to flexible folding screen technology, four-wheel drive folding shaft technology, flexible cover technology, MIUI system adaptation and so on.

Bin has claimed that the double-folded form factor of the Xiaomi Dual Flex / MIX Flex allows it to deliver a combined experience of a tablet and a smartphone. In the video, the Bin can be seen holding the unfolded device in between his thumb and little finger which suggests that it could be featuring a screen of around 6 inches. After folding the square-shaped device from both sides, it can metamorphose into a device with a small screen with a width of around 3 inches. There is a button at the topside of the phone for locking the display of the phone.

There is no information on the specs of the Xiaomi Dual Flex / MIX Flex. Probably, it could be packed with specs like Snapdragon 855 and 8 GB of RAM. Xiaomi has confirmed that it will be present at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 tech expo on Feb. 24. Probably, the Xiaomi Dual Flex / MIX Flex device may get unleased at MWC.

Meizu Note 9 tipped to release with Snapdragon 675 next month

Meizu will be unleashing its first holeless phone later today. There is no confirmation yet on when it will be releasing in the market. Probably, it may hit the market after the launch of the mid-range Meizu Note 9. Fresh information shared by a tipster from China reveals that the Meizu Note 9 will be hitting the market by the middle of the coming month. He has also shared some other key information on the smartphone.

The Chinese tipster claims that the Snapdragon 675 will be fueling the Meizu Note 9 smartphone. In the recent past, Meizu CEO Jack Wong had revealed on the company’s official forum site that the Note 9 will be powered by Snapdragon 6150. Recent reports have revealed that Snapdragon 6150 is the codename of Snapdragon 675 mobile platform. In terms of performance, the Snapdragon 675 is even powerful than Snapdragon 710, but it comes with a weaker GPU.

The Redmi Note 7 is the first mid-range phone to come equipped with Samsung ISOCELL GM1 48-megapixel camera sensor. The upcoming Meizu Note 9 too will be featuring the same sensor in its dual camera setup. The tipster has claimed that it will be a thousand Yuan (~$147) device which indicates that it will be a worthy rival for the Redmi Note 7 since it is also available with a starting price of 999 Yuan (~$147).

Meizu Note 9

Previous reports have revealed that the Note 9 will be the first Meizu phone to arrive with a waterdrop notched screen of around 6.3 inches. It is speculated to feature side-mounted fingerprint scanner. The handset will be receiving power from 4,000mAh. The new SoC may allow the phone to support rapid charging. The latest Flyme edition flavored Android 9 Pie OS will come preloaded on the device.

The Meizu Note 9 has recently bagged certifications from 3C and CMIIT bodies in China. Soon, the smartphone may surface on TENAA along with its full specifications ahead of its mid-February debut. The Chinese manufacturer is yet to confirm on the launch date for the smartphone.

Huawei confirmed to launch its 5G smartphone in June this year

This year will witness the 5G technology go mainstream. While many smartphone manufacturers are working on a 5G-compatible smartphone, none of them have officially launched a 5G smartphone.

While OnePlus and Samsung are said to be among the first to launch their 5G smartphones, Huawei has also confirmed that the company’s 5G smartphone will be launched soon. This puts the rumors to rest which suggested that Huawei could unveil its 5G smartphone at MWC 2019 in Barcelona.

At the World Economic Forum in Davos, Huawei’s chairman Hu Houkun (aka Ken Hu) confirmed that the company will be launching its 5G smartphone in June this year. He also announced that the company has deployed 5G networks in 10 countries and will soon deploy in 20 more countries.

huawei patents

The announcement regarding the company’s 5G smartphone comes at a time when Huawei is going through difficulties. Several countries have blocked Huawei from working on their network infrastructure because of national security concerns. Last month, Huawei’s CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested in Canada, at the request of the United States, on charges related to the violation of American sanctions on Iran.

Hu Koukun also said that this year will be crucial for the tech sector as technologies such as the internet of things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and blockchain are now reaching critical application stages.

It appears that South Korea could be one of the first markets to receive Huawei’s first 5G smartphone since it’s the only country along with the U.S. where commercialization of 5G network is expected to happen by the first half of 2019. In the second half of 2019, the 5G networks may get commercialized in Japan, Chin, and Europe.

The 5G smartphone from OnePlus is confirmed to be powered by Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 855 octa-core 7nm processor. The phone, which will kick-off a new lineup for the company, will be priced around $100 more than the OP6T and is expected to launch by the end of May this year.

The phone that is completely submerged in water has no buttons on its right side and it does not seem feature any port on its bottom edge. Meizu is known for selling phone with symmetric design. However, the design of the holeless phone is asymmetric since it features a slightly thick top bezel while the remaining bezels appear very thin. Meizu has claimed that the holeless phone is not waterproof, it is just that it does not feature any holes.

The exact name of the holeless phone is not known yet. Also, there is no information available on the specs of the phone. Meizu will be announcing its hole-less phone just a day ahead of Vivo’s event through which it will be unveiling the APEX 2019 smartphone. The APEX 2019 is made out of a unique material which feels like a soft metal. The Vivo phone does not feature any buttons or holes. Hence, it remains how different the Vivo APEX 2019 will be from the Meizu’s holeless phone.

Meizu holeless phone

Coming back to Meizu’s holeless smartphone, the Chinese manufacturer might have used existing technologies to make it a truly non-porous device. The smartphone could be equipped with bone conduction or screen soundcast technology for speaker and earpiece.  The smartphone may support wireless charging which in turn suggest that it could be equipped with a glass back. Users may listen to songs from the device by using Bluetooth earbuds. For power and controlling volume, the edges of the phone could be equipped with touch-sensitive sensors. Meizu fans will have wait few more hours to see what sort of solution the company may have used for features like SIM card slot and microphone.
