Xiaomi buys back 6 million shares worth HKD 60 million as stock prices fall

Last year, Xiaomi officially launched its Hong Kong IPO but the performance of the company’s IPO hasn’t been as expected. Last week, the company bought back around 6 million shares as investors are selling the shares after a lockup period.

As per the reports, the Chinese company has bought the Class B shares at an average price of HKD 9.76 (approximately $1.24), totaling nearly HKD 60 million, which roughly converts to $7.6 million. In a statement, Xiaomi said that the company’s board believes that the current financial resources of the group enable it to implement the share repurchase while maintaining a solid financial position.

It also added that its brand proposition with cost-efficient products will be even more compelling in current market conditions.” Jin Di, longtime industry watcher and former analyst with IDC said, “Xiaomi shares have been negatively affected since the global consumer electronics market cooled in 2018, and the company intends to provide a boost to the market.”

Xiaomi’s share price slumped around 20 percent in the days preceding the expiry of the company’s six-month lockup period. The company has seen its market value nearly halve since it went public in Hong Kong last July as the smartphone market slows.

Last week, the company’s share price dropped by 3 percent following the sale of 231 million Class B shares by an undisclosed investor. Analysts believe that the company’s business performance, especially in internet services, wasn’t exciting enough and it failed to improve investor confidence.

In the year 2018, Xiaomi shipped nearly 1 billion devices. Apart from its hardware business, the company also has an internet services company, offering online music and movies to around 220 million users. It only accounted for 9.3 percent of the company’s total revenue in the third quarter of 2018.

The company said it has confidence in its business outlook, which is driven by its smartphones and AIoT strategy — a convergence of AI and internet of things technologies.

Motorola RAZR 2019 front, rear design seems to have leaked through patent filing

A Wall Street Journal report from the previous week had claimed that Lenovo-owned Motorola will revive the yesteryear Motorola RAZR V3 clamshell phone. The smartphone is expected to debut with a foldable design and an expensive price tag. The launch date of the Motorola RAZR 2019 is yet to be finalized, but its arrival may not be far away. Folks at 91mobiles has spotted a patent filing of a Motorola phone with World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO). Since it features a foldable design, it is believed that it could be the design of the rumored Motorola RAZR 2019 foldable phone.

In the below image, the alleged Motorola RAZR 2019 can be seen sporting a tall display along with a thick chin. At the topside of the display is a wider notch which appears to be equipped with an earpiece. It does not seem to house a selfie camera. The edges at the center area of the phone features hinges on the either sides of the screen, but they seem to be hidden under the display area which confirms that it will be sporting a foldable design.

The rear design of the Motorola RAZR 2019 is interesting since it features two halves that are joined by a hinge. The upper half features a small-sized secondary display like the original Motorola RAZR V3 phone. The small screen can be used for checking notifications for calls and messages without opening the phone to see the main display. There seems to be a camera above the second screen while it could be equipped with a fingerprint scanner on its lower half. The below image shows of the side view of the alleged Motorola RAZR 2019 clamshell flagship phone.

Fresh information that has surfaced from South Kore reveals that Motorola RAZR 2019 will use the folding screen solution from Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy F foldable phone. Last week’s report had revealed that the company will be manufacturing more than 200,000 units of the RAZR 2019 phone. The handset could be exclusively available in the U.S. through Verizon Wireless with a price tag of $1,500.

Honor View 20 vs Oppo Find X vs Google Pixel 3: Specs Comparison

Honor V20 is going to debut in the European market with the moniker Honor View 20 and it is ready to conquer the segment of affordable flagships in the Old Continent. But the phone will have a lot of competition, so it is all but obvious that it will have the biggest success in Europe. Two of its most important competitors are surely the Oppo Find X which is the first Oppo device to come in the European market and the new Google Pixel 3 which is one of the most compact flagships in the market. Here is a specs comparison.

Design

If you need the phone with the most impressive look, you should go either for the Honor View 20 or the Oppo Find X. The first is one of the few devices with a hole in-display for the front camera, placed there to minimize the bezels. It also has a stunning glass back with suggestive light effects on it. Oppo Find X is the first phone with a motorized slider design consisting of a slider that houses all the cameras. It comes with an incredibly high screen-to-body ratio, no notch, and no holes. Google Pixel 3 has not a very attractive look, but it is the most compact device.

Display

In terms of viewing quality, Google Pixel 3 has the best display, even though it is the smallest one with just 5.5 inches (18:9 aspect ratio). It features a better color reproduction thanks to 100% DCI-P3 coverage and the HDR10 technology, and it also has a higher pixel density. Last but not least, it has stereo speakers on the front, enhancing the multimedia experience. The second place goes to Oppo Find X with its wide AMOLED display. Honor View 20 has just a midrange IPS panel, so it takes the last place.

Hardware/Software

The hardware side of the Honor View 20 is the most powerful thanks to the Kirin 980 chipset delivering blazing speeds and a huge smoothness. The phone is equipped with up to 8 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal storage and it runs a custom UI. But Google Pixel 3 has another important advantage, even though it has lower-end hardware: it comes with a stock Android experience and faster updates. The Pixel line-up usually gets updated before every other phone.

Camera

Even though it has just a single sensor on the back, Google Pixel 3 is able to deliver the highest photo quality. It has incredibly good autofocus as well as a perfect optical stabilization, and it is even able to provide a great bokeh effect, despite not having a secondary depth sensor. The front camera is very interesting as well thanks to the double sensor which includes an ultra wide angle lens. Excluding the Google Pixel 3, I would choose the Honor View 20 because of its stunning 48 MP sensor on the back, which maximizes the detail and delivers a low level of noise in low light conditions.

Battery

Honor View 20 has a battery with a capacity of 4000 mAh, a rare thing for flagships. It can provide up to two days of battery life with moderate use and it wins the battery comparison. Oppo Find X has a slightly smaller battery, but it has the fastest charging technology, while Google Pixel 3 cannot compete with its opponents because its capacity is just at an average level.

Price

Google Pixel 3 is my favorite phone from this trio because it has important added values such as a better camera, water resistance, faster updates and stereo speakers, but Honor View 20 has a definitely higher value for money because it costs just €600/$682 while Google Pixel 3 costs about €850/$966. Oppo Find X has more or less the same price as the View 20 thanks to online street prices.

Geekbench reveals Moto G7 Play is powered by the Snapdragon 625

The Moto G7 Play is one of the upcoming Moto G phones rumored to launch next month. It should be the cheapest of the lot, and a Geekbench listing as revealed it will also be the least powerful.

The Moto G7 Play was benchmarked yesterday and the listing reveals it is powered by Qualcomm’s MSM8953 processor which is popularly known as the Snapdragon 625. This is surprising as the phone was reported to come with a Snapdragon 632 processor just like the Moto G7 Power.

The version on Geekbench also has just 2GB of RAM but runs Android 9 Pie.

The Moto G7 Play’s manual was seen on the FCC’s website back in November along with photos. The documents revealed it will have a 3,000mAh battery, a fingerprint scanner, and a notched display. The notch will house a camera, a speaker and a LED flash for nighttime selfies.

Xiaomi announces creation of African Regional Department to take on market king, Transsion Holdings

In Africa, Apple isn’t king, neither is Samsung or any of the other big names in the mobile industry. The African mobile phone market is controlled by Transsion Holdings, owners of Tecno, Infinix, and Itel phone brands. Now, Xiaomi has announced the establishment of an African Regional Department to challenge the Shenzhen-based Transsion.

According to a market research analysis for the first quarter of 2018, Samsung held the largest market share but Transsion’s Tecno and Itel brands had the second and third largest market share while its Infinix brand came in at 5th place just behind Huawei. Collectively, that makes Transsion Holdings the leader of the smartphone market.

Xiaomi wants some of that market share and this isn’t surprising. The brand has been on an expansion streak in the last 18 months. It has opened up shop in new countries and regions and now it wants to come to Africa.

This isn’t actually Xiaomi’s first foray into the African market. A few years ago, it launched a few phones in Nigeria but was barred by a court injunction from selling any more phones and products. The injunction which was obtained by a South African phone company called Mi-Fone prevented Xiaomi from selling any phone or product with the trade name “Mi”. Xiaomi later obtained a pass that allowed it to sell its products in Nigeria.

However, only a few Xiaomi phones have been sold since then and actually by retail partners. Last year, the Redmi Note 5A and Redmi Note 5 were sold by e-Commerce store, Jumia. The Redmi 6A is also currently available on the retail site. Apart from these devices, there isn’t really an official presence in the country. There is also no after-sales service. Nevertheless, Xiaomi products are quite popular as a lot of people import them from outside the continent.

Now that Xiaomi has established an African Regional Department, things should be much different. We should see devices get official launches in different countries and there should be official after-sales support.

According to the official memo, Xiaomi’s African Regional Department will be headed by Wang Lingming and he will report to Wang Xiang.

Live photos of the Moto G7 Power confirm specs and reveal Brazilian price

Motorola hasn’t yet announced the 7th-gen Moto G series yet but it appears a launch will happen very soon. Live images of the Moto G7 Power have surfaced online and they were taken at a store in Brazil. If the phone is already shipping to stores, that should mean an official launch is around the corner.

The images confirm the specs of the Moto G7 Power and also reveal the price of the phone. Although the price is for Brazil, it should give us an idea of how much it will cost when it arrives in other countries.

The Moto G7 Power will come with a 6.2-inch HD+ display with a notch at the top that houses the 8MP selfie camera and speaker. While an FHD+ display would be better, the lower resolution should mean less power consumption and longer battery life.

The phone is powered by a 1.8GHz octa-core processor. This is said to be the Snapdragon 632 mobile platform. The chipset is paired with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage. There will be other RAM and storage configurations available.

The back of the Moto G7 Power is home to a single 12MP sensor that is housed in a black circle along with an LED flash. There is a fingerprint scanner beneath the setup with a Motorola logo on top. The back of the device appears to be covered in glass that reflects light. The variant in the live images is blue.

The phone packs a massive 5,000mAh battery which should last a whole day and probably more. One shot of the phone shows a number of Motorola apps and Google’s own File Go and Photos apps.

Ceramic version of the Galaxy S10 Plus to have 12GB RAM and 1TB storage

The Lenovo Z5 Pro GT launched as the world’s first phone with 12GB of RAM in December. New reports say a variant of Samsung’s Galaxy S10 Plus might join the list.

Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus renders

It was reported a few months ago that Samsung would launch a version of the Galaxy S10 that will have a ceramic body. That version was initially said to be the 5G version of the Galaxy S10 which has been referred to as the Galaxy S10 X. Latest news from say it will likely be a variant of the Galaxy S10 Plus instead and will pack lots of storage and RAM.

This version of the Galaxy S10 Plus is said to have model number SM-G975FC and will come in white and black ceramic variants according to SamMobile. China-based leaker @UniverseIce known for his Samsung-related leaks also revealed in a tweet yesterday that the ceramic version of the S10 Plus will also have 12GB of RAM and 1TB of storage!

The tweet also said the ceramic is made via a special process that not only makes it resistant to scratches but also “resistant to falling”. We believe he means the phone will also be able to survive more drops than the glass variant. However, this feature gives the phone additional weight. Lastly, he says it will have a metallic luster which should make it look really nice and attractive.
