Nubia Red Magic gaming smartphone to reportedly launch in India next month

ZTE’s sub-brand Nubia, which launched its first gaming smartphone named Nubia Red Magic earlier this year, is now reportedly all set to launch the gaming phone in the Indian market. According to a report, which cites sources close to the development, Nubia will launch the phone in India in the third week of October.

The report further claims that the phone will be priced under Rs. 30,000 (approximately $417). With the Nubia Red Magic gaming phone, the company is competing against the likes of Xiaomi, Razer, and Asus which have already launched a dedicated gaming smartphone.

However, none of the gaming smartphones have been officially launched in India yet. So, the Nubia Red Magic could be the first high-end gaming smartphone to make its way to India. Recently, Huawei’s sub-brand Honor had launched its Honor Play affordable gaming smartphone in India, which starts at Rs. 19,999, roughly $278.

Nubia Red Magic

The Nubia Red Magic is made out of aluminum and is ergonomically designed for extended gameplay. It uses advanced thermal modeling techniques and is claimed to be the first smartphone to use an all-new air convection cooling system which is designed to dissipate heat effectively across its diamond-cut design without compromising on performance.

To make it stand out from the competition, the phone is branded with a distinctive RGB LED strip. The smartphone features a 5.99-inch Full HD+ display with an edge-to-edge 2.5D NEG T2X-1 screen, 18:9 aspect ratio and 1500:1 contrast ratio. Under the hood, the smartphone is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 835 processor.

The processor is coupled Adreno 540 GPU, along with 8GB of RAM and 128GB dual-channel flash memory. The Nubia Red Magic comes with a GameBoost mode, which frees up memory-intensive resources and delivers higher frame rates.

For photography, there’s a 24-megapixel Samsung 5K2X7SX rear camera sensor with 0.9μm pixel size, f/1.7 aperture and supports 4K video recording at 30fps and slow-motion 720p video recording at 120fps. On the front side, there’s an 8-megapixel SK Hynix HI-846 sensor with 1.12μm pixel size and f/2.0 aperture.

Connectivity options on the device include 4G LTE, Bluetooth 5.0, MIMO 2×2, Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac, GPS and GLONASS. It comes with DTS Technology and Smart Amplifier system for an immersive sound experience. The smartphone runs on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box and is powered by a 3,800mAh battery which can provide up to 7 hours of gameplay on a single charge.

Amazfit Verge Hands on pictures: A complete premium smartwatch is born!

Huami officially unveiled its latest smartwatch dubbed Amazfit Verge a couple of days back. Make no mistake, the Verge isn’t the Amazfit Watch 3 neither is it a successor of the Amazfit Stratos sports watch. The wearable device is on a pedestal of its own. That is well reflected in the design which the Verge adopts. The 799 yuan (~$116) price tag it features is equally lower than the 999 yuan (~$146) Amazfit Stratos’. We bring you a couple of hands-on pictures of the Amazfit Verge so you get a closer look at the device from all angles.Amazfit Verge smartwatch

The Verge packs a 1.3-inch circular display with a diameter of 43mm. This is similar in size with the higher variant of Samsung’s latest Galaxy Watch. Well, except that the Amazfit Verge is made from reinforced plastic, giving it a sporty outlook rather than the looks of a traditional watch which Samsung’s models adapt. The Verge also doesn’t feature a rotating bezel but it is equipped with an AMOLED display with a resolution of 360x360pixels as well as Gorilla Glass 3 on top. Huami says there is a coating on top of the screen which prevents fingerprint smudges from accumulating on the screen during use. The smartwatch is equipped with a silicone strap that can be removed in the same manner as those of the Amazfit Pace and Stratos. More importantly, it is lightweight, weighing just 46 grams. The build is IP68 certified but you still can’t take the watch swimming or when going under the shower.Amazfit Verge

Some persons may not find the design too appealing, especially when compared to the Amazfit Stratos but bear in mind this isn’t a sports-focused smartwatch. So, the rugged looks of the Stratos give way for a more refined, sleek and elegant mien. That doesn’t mean the Verge hasn’t got you covered when you’re out jogging or on the treadmill. The device comes with support for 11 different sports mode including Golfing, Riding, Running, hiking, Gym training, Soccer and Boat riding. It also has GPS+GLONASS support. In addition, the smartwatch is equipped with Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.0+BLE. Sadly, there is no LTE connectivity but we believe that could come on subsequent versions. The watch is powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz processor with 512MB RAM and 4 GB ROM. Along with the usual sensors, there are additional geomagnetic, and air pressure sensors on board. Also onboard, is a 390mAh battery which Huami claims can last up to 5 days, depending on the usage.amazfit-verge-smartwatch

While the Amazfit Pace and Stratos main feature are basically sports and fitness tracking, the Verge is focused on the Internet of Things (IoT), smart home controls, voice assistant and with NFC, contactless payment. As a smart home device controller, the Amazfit Verge allows users to control their smart gadgets right from the watch interface. It comes with support for Xiaomi’s MIJIA smart home apps and can be deployed to control up to eleven smart home gadgets. Gadgets that can be controlled via the MIJIA app on the watch include Mi Robot Vacuum, Water Purifier, temperature and humidity sensor, air-conditioner, electric fan, air detector, smart light, rice cooker, smart switch/socket and Mi Air Purifier.Amazfit verge smartwatch

The Amazfit Verge also keeps track of the user’s heart rate all day long and is capable of detecting abnormal heart rhythm. When such an abnormality is detected, the user is alerted immediately. In addition, the watch comes with Xiao AI assistant which can act as a personal assistant. The AI-powered virtual assistant can remind you of important schedules like an upcoming meeting, important stuff like your car’s number plate. It could even tell a joke when you’re not feeling happy! The feature may have been fully adapted for use in China. We wait to see how fast Huami deploys these features for the global market. So too for the NFC-based cardless payment. I China the Verge can be used for bus payment on 165 cities covering over 20,000 public transport routes. It also supports AliPay and UnionPay will roll out in November. amazfit-verge-smartwatch

The Amazfit Verge also share similar user interface and perhaps user experience with the Pace and Stratos as all models are based on the same software platform and they are developed by the same team. However, the several additional features will ensure the interface of the Verge is more robust. It comes with 13 built-in watch faces with three made in collaboration with San Francisco-based Territory Studio. We expect to serve you the Amazfit Verge review sometime soon. If you are interested in the Verge, it is available outside China via e-retailers like Giztop, GearBest, Banggood etc. Meanwhile, find the hands-on pictures of the Verge from below.

Renders of Google’s ChromeOS tablet leaks, has a fingerprint scanner

Google is expected to announce a new PixelBook at its October 9 event. Early rumors and leaks point at a detachable 2-in-1 design which means the PixelBook 2 will also double as a ChromeOS tablet just like the Microsoft Surface Book doubles as a Windows tablet. A new leak might be our first look at this new PixelBook or Google’s first ChromeOS tablet.

The leak comes from About Chromebooks, a site that covers anything related to ChromeOS. Apparently, they found in a code commit that ChromeOS tablets will gain support for keyboard docks in the near future. The commit description even mentions the keyboard bases will have a dedicated Google Assistant button and a “Hamburger” or options button. The code commit also revealed some of the brands that would make these keyboards, one of them is Brydge, a manufacturer of premium keyboards for iPads.

Yesterday, Brydge accidentally posted two unreleased keyboards on their Shopify page which are for Google devices (read ChromeOS tablets). Renders of one of the keyboards named Wallaby is attached to a tablet said to be Google’s ChromeOS tablet codenamed “Nocturne”.

Brydge Wallaby Keyboard with Google ChromeOS Tablet sale page

Wallaby has a design similar to the Bryde keyboard in this video below which allows the keyboard and tablet to be opened and closed like it’s a laptop.

https://youtu.be/0urJKIDjOVs

The tablet has a USB-C port on the left but Nocturne is expected to come with two USB-C ports. It also has dual front-facing speakers which are located on the right/bottom and left/top bezels.

[envira-gallery id=”213046″]

Another render showing the keyboard and tablet from the top shows the tablet has a small indentation on the left. That indentation is rumored to be a fingerprint scanner. Nocturne is said to also have a fingerprint scanner and this gif from 9to5Google shows the fingerprint scanner is in a similar position.

The keyboard itself comes in blue but we can’t say if there will be other colors at launch. There is a moderately sized trackpad and the keys do not look cramped. You can also spot the hamburger key (after the volume up button) and the Google Assistant key (between the function and alt keys).

[envira-gallery id=”213047″]

The second keyboard is named Goanna and is much wider like a desktop keyboard. It doesn’t have a trackpad but has a hamburger key and Google Assistant key like Wallaby. It comes in the same blue color.

In this article, we compared them in order to see which company released the best Chinese upper-midranger in this second half of 2018.

Design

Coming to the aesthetics, it is all about tastes. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite and Huawei Honor 8X have a definitely stunning design with their reflective glass back (the first available in gradient colors and the second with impressive light waves as well as a very high screen-to-body ratio). Meizu X8 instead has a very original design even though it is less impressive in terms of colors and light reflections on the rear side. Note that Huawei Honor 8X has a way bigger size than its opponents and this may let you change idea if you decided to get it.

Display

Huawei Honor 8X is the one I prefer because of its very wide display with a size of 6.5 inches. As said above, it even has incredibly narrow bezels. Each of these devices has an average IPS LCD panel, so do not expect a huge viewing quality but just a midrange-level display. There is a notch on each of them, but it does not contain a 3D sensor for face authentication. But note that each of these devices supports software-based face unlock as a method of authentication, besides the rear-mounted fingerprint reader.

Specs & Software

Meizu X8 is the phone which convinces us the most when it comes to hardware. Indeed, it has a more powerful processor which should handle heavier operation in a better way. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite and Huawei Honor 8X have two chipsets (Snapdragon 660 and Kirin 970) which can be considered at the same level, but I believe that the former will have better graphics performance thanks to its more powerful GPU. Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite has the MIUI installed (the best UI among these handsets in my opinion), Meizu X8 has Flyme OS and Honor 8X has EMUI: all of them are based on Oreo and provide many useful additional features.

Camera

On the paper, all of these devices’ cameras should offer a pretty decent photo quality. All of them are dual cameras with an additional depth sensor and similar specs (Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite and Meizu X8 have the same primary sensor). But we are going to prefer Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite due to its potentially better selfie camera and its huge 24 MP resolution. However, I believe that differences in photo quality are just marginal, so do not base your choice on cameras so much.

Battery

On the battery side, Huawei Honor 8X should be the champion, even though we can not be sure of it until we test the handset in every scenario. But it has a way bigger battery with a capacity of 3750 mAh, and this should be enough to ensure a longer battery life than Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite and Meizu X8 which should provide a similar result on a single charge.

Price

You just need $205/€175 to bring a Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite at home, while for Meizu X8 you need to spend $223/€190. At last, Huawei Honor 8X sits in the middle with a price tag of $211/€180. Even when it comes to the price, the difference between these handsets is marginal, with less than $20 between the most affordable and the most expensive one. In my opinion there is not a definitive winner of this comparison and each of them is more suitable for a different target: if you want a bigger display and battery, go for the Honor 8X, if you need better performance, then choose Meizu X8, while if you need good performance, great cameras and wonderful aesthetics choose Xiaomi Mi 8 Lite. I would personally pick the Honor 8X because I appreciate is big display, its narrow bezels, and its above-average battery, but it does not mean it is the best.

Nokia 7.1 Plus adopts a Notch Display, Dual Rear Cameras; leaked render hints

Nokia announced the Nokia 7 Plus in February this year and the model came out with a bang. It recently won the best “Consumer Smartphone” award from EISA in Europe alongside the Honor 10 and Huawei P20 Pro. This is as a result of its superb price to performance ratio. While the model is still selling hot, Nokia seems to be planning to up the ante by releasing the Nokia 7.1 Plus. The supposed photo of the rumoured Nokia 7.1 Plus has appeared in a couple of leaks recently but this latest leaked render appears to show a different design. The earlier ones showed the Nokia 7.1 Plus will not have a notch but in this case, the device features a notch display.nokia 7.1 plus

The renders as shared by MySmartPrice showcases both the front, rear and side design of the device. At the front, it shows the device will come with a notch display design. The design is very much similar to that of the Nokia X6 which is also called Nokia 6.1 Plus. This model may also launch in some market as Nokia X7 but with the X6 dropping in July, we don’t see the rationale behind Nokia launching a successor this year.

The rear deisgn also looks very similar to the Nokia 6.1 Plus but a few differentials can be seen. One of such is the ZEISS badge at the middle of the dual cameras. The rear also houses a fingerprint sensor but the accented ring which borders the sensor on the Nokia X6 is missing. We can’t say if the model will be released this year but in our opinion, this design is not inspiring enough. Let us know what you think of the Nokia 7.1 Plus design in the comment section.

Don’t expect a Meizu 5G phone anytime soon based on founder’s statement

A number of manufacturers have already been announcing timelines for the release of their 5G phones. While most of them are looking towards next year, Meizu plans to wait a few more years for the “technology to mature”.

meizu 16

A statement by Meizu’s founder, Jack Wong (Huang Zhang) has revealed the Chinese smartphone company will take its time before releasing a 5G phone. Mr. Wong took to Weibo to explain why.

Based on a rough translation of the post, the former Meizu CEO said they will definitely release a 5G phone. However, he believes the first set of 5G phones can as well be termed test devices. The second gen models will bring key improvements over the first but the third generation 5G models are the ones the average user should look forward too as the technology would have matured then. This third generation 5G phones will likely include Meizu’s own phone(s).

Going by the above statement, the earliest time we expect to see a 5G phone from Meizu will probably be in 2021. That’s a long time in the mobile industry but let’s hope it is worth the wait.
