Sony to Kill Affordable High-End Smartphones; Will Focus on True Flagship and Mid-Range Phones

Sony has been selling smartphones like Xperia X and Xperia X Compact that come with nearly flagship specifications along with reasonable pricing. Since these smartphones are not true flagships, such phones have met with lackluster sales. Hence, the Japanese company is going to kill affordable flagship phones. Instead, it will focus more on launching true flagship and mid-range smartphones.

In Japan, the affordable flagships could meet 85 percent of the revenue target set by the company. Outside Japan, this number declined to 31 percent. Sony could meet only 43 percent of its global targets in this segment.  During the 2017 Investor Day, the company confirmed that it will be concentrating on releasing premium smartphones like Sony Xperia XZ Premium and Xperia XZs and mid-range phones like Xperia XA1 and Xperia XA1 Ultra. Here are some of the things that were discussed in 2017 Investor Day:

Sony smartphones will be coming with certain features that only it can offer.  Sony has introduced the Motion Eye camera system that shoot super slow motion videos at 960 fps. The Xperia XZ Premium is the first smartphone to come with support 4K HDR. This will allow the Japanese company to distinguish its smartphones from other brands.

In the past years, Sony’s market share has fallen significantly. However, in 2017, it aims to increase its market share by featuring its smartphones with such technologies that can be delivered by Sony. Since Sony can leverage the brand strength in markets like Japans, East Asia, APAC, Middle East and Europe, it will be concentrating more smartphones in these regions. The company also wants to make it big in India where the market is flooded with plenty of low-range smartphones that earn low profits.

The Japanese company also wants to improve the popularity of its smartphones in the U.S. This is only possible if the company invests a lot of money in advertising. it aims to sell its smartphones in the U.S. by building a strong partnership with the U.S.-based carries. Since Sony smartphones are not available through leading carriers in the U.S., it handsets have met with poor sales.

The Sony Xperia XZ Premium will be launching next month, but the U.S. consumers are unaware of it because of poor advertising strategy in the country. If Sony follows its new plans, it can achieve popularity in the U.S.

Nokia Revive Series: The Return of The Legends, Starting With The Re-imagined Nokia N97

As part of Nokia’s return into the smartphone market, HMD Global revived the iconic Nokia 3310. The relaunch of the legendary phone brought about a feeling of nostalgia that resonated all over the globe. Now that Nokia is fully back in business, we hope to see more of its iconic smartphones given new life.

Joe and I had an interesting discussion on what phones we hope to see Nokia bring back to life. We narrowed them down to five, but we may add more later on. We decided to share our imaginations with you and also hear your feedback. This will be a series that will run over the next couple of weeks and will be authored by either Joe or myself. What we are hoping to achieve from this series is to re-imagine the legendary Nokia phones of the 2000s and see how could we fit them in the current market scenario. A lot of things have changed since the Nokia times and if these phones were to make a comeback, they would need some serious changes, and not just in the colors, but in everything, including the design and the hardware.

This is how we’ve imagined the Nokia N97 2017 Edition. Feel free to add your thoughts and comments on what you would like to see if this legendary phone makes a comeback.

Nokia N97
The Original Nokia N97

1. Nokia N97 (2017)

The first phone we want to see Nokia bring back is the Nokia N97. BlackBerry has proved that there is still a market for phones with physical keyboards and the BlackBerry KEYone is the example that comes to mind.

The original Nokia N97 launched with a 3.5-inch slide-and-tilt touch display, 128MB of RAM and 32GB of storage. That will get you nowhere in 2017.

To pimp this baby up, we are giving it a 5.5-inch FHD display with thin bezels on all sides but a large enough one at the bottom to hold a fingerprint scanner. It will be powered by a Snapdragon 660 processor, while the RAM gets a massive boost to 4GB and storage starts at 64GB. I know you would be tempted to get the SD835 in this baby, but remember, we have to keep the costs reasonable.

The highlight of the N97 is its keyboard, which can only be used in landscape mode. To make navigation easier, we think the keyboard should work like that of the Blackberry Priv. That means we are ditching the D-pad navigation buttons on the original N97. The whole keyboard will now serve as a trackpad so you can navigate through apps and menus without touching the screen.

The original N97 had a 5MP Carl Zeiss sensor for its rear camera. That is unacceptable in this age. We’ll swap it out for the 12MP Sony IMX378 sensor and ditch the slide that covers it. The VGA front camera also gets bumped to a very decent 8MP shooter with a dedicated flash.

The Moto Z2 Play GeekBench Listing Reveals Snapdragon 626 Chipset and 4GB of RAM

The Moto Z2 Play was seen on Geekbench yesterday. The benchmarking site has revealed the smartphone will be powered by the Snapdragon 626 which is a slight upgrade over the Snapdragon 625.

Moto Z2 Play Geekbench

The test results shows the Moto Z2 Play scoring 891 points on the single-core test and 4538 points on the multi-core test. The listing also reveals the Z2 Play will come with 4GB of RAM and run Android 7.1.1 out of the box.

The Moto Z Play was praised for its great battery life but we may not be able to say the same for the Moto Z2 Play. Unlike its predecessor that has a 3510mAh battery, the Z2 Play will come with a smaller 3000mAh battery.

The only reason I believe led to Lenovo/Motorola taking this decision is so that it can sell off the thousands of battery mods it has unsold in its warehouses. Nobody complained about the 7mm thickness of the Moto Z Play, so shaving off so much battery to keep the thickness under 6mm isn’t an excuse.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Launched With A Massive 5300mAh Battery, Processor Disappoints

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 was announced at an official event in China a few minutes back. This is an important smartphone for the company as it’s only the second large screen phablet from the company in recent years and considering the popularity of the original Xiaomi Mi Max, the new generation Mi Max 2 has some pretty large shoes to fill.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Design

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Hero

Design wise, the Mi Max 2 does not incorporate any significant changes than its predecessor. What’s changed at the back are the antenna band design on the top as well as the bottom. They are now tucked towards the top and bottom edges, thereby creating a seamless back design. The fingerprint sensor is still on the back. The design looks a bit curvier than before, but we can confirm this only after we get our hands on the phablet.

Coming to the front of the phone, everything is almost the same as before. However, Xiaomi adds that the black borders around the screen (which we all hate) are now thinner than the first generation model.

Mi MAx 2 black bezels narrower

The company seems to have reduced the thickness of the black borders quite significantly, now measuring just 0.7mm, which is great!

As for the dual LED flash position, it’s now located on the left side of the camera sensor instead of the right. One more thing, there’s a 3.5mm headphone jack on top, so you don’t have to worry about getting Type-C headphones, at least not for this phone.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Specs

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 comes with the Snapdragon 625 chipset inside with 4GB RAM and 64GB of internal storage. There’s a 4GB + 128GB model as well. Now, to be honest, it’s disappointing to see SD625 inside the phablet. We were expecting much a better chipset inside, something like the SD660.

Mi Max 2 Promo Image

The Mi Max 2 comes with the same 12MP IMX386 sensor as the Xiaomi Mi 6. The pixel size has been increased to 1.25um for better quality pictures along with a night mode enhancement feature. Other camera specs include PDAF, dual tone LED flash, and dynamic range adjustment.

Coming to the battery, Xiaomi has made the Mi Max 2 an even better battery monster. The new generation model now comes with a much larger 5300mAh battery inside that promises up to 18 hours of video playback. You can get up to 9 hours of continuous gaming or 21 hour continuous navigation or 57 hour continuous talktime or even 10 day continuous music playback with this huge battery on board. Further, charging it won’t be an issue since the phone supports QC 3.0 and charges up to 68% in an hour.

You get stereo speakers inside, an upgrade from the single speaker on the Mi Max.

Here’s a basic Mi Max 2 Specs summary:

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Software

Xiaomi has revealed that it has tweaked MIUI to improve user experience on the Xiaomi Mi Mi Max 2. The phone comes with a floating ball which can be used to open your most frequently used apps. Then there are other features such as one hand mode and others features which will help in the day to day use of the 6.44-inch display phablet.

No word on the Android version yet, but expect at least Android 7.1 with MIUI 8.2.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Price & Availability

Mi Max 2 price

The Xiaomi Mi Mix is priced at 1699 Yuan (~$248) for the 4GB + 64GB version and 1999 yuan (~$291) for the 4GB + 128GB version. It will go on sale on June 1 via online as well as offline stores.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2’s First Look: A Real 6.44-inch Beauty

Before the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 finally goes official, a promotional video of the phablet showcasing its design and looks has been released by Xiaomi. The video shows the device from almost all angles, only omitting the part where the USB port is supposed to be located. This could perhaps be a deliberate act to keep us guessing whether the Max 2 features a USB Type-C port or not. No worries, we’ll find out about that soon.Xiaomi Mi Max 2

From the video we get to see the beautiful, large display packing smartphone Xiaomi has designed just for us. Despite its large size, and talks of a bigger battery than the Mi Max, the Mi Max 2 still looks like what will come with a thin body built which should make holding it with one hand an easy task. The Mi Max 2 comes with a 6.44-inch display and taking into account the bezels around the display, the entire size of the device could be a little bigger.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2

There is also a rear fingerprint sensor on the device which is centrally located at the upper rear aspect of the device. The rear camera is tilted to the left side in Xiaomi’s usual pattern with a dual-tone LED flash sitting by its left side. There is also a 3.5mm audio jack onboard.

On the whole, what we see is a beautiful design that would be a hot-selling phablet considering the increasing demand for large display packing smartphones in the market presently. The Mi Max 2 will be official in a moment and we’ll bring you the entire details right here on Gizmochina. Meanwhile, check out more photos from down below. Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Visits Geekbench Before Launch

Xiaomi‘s Mi Max 2 phablet is expected to go live today in an event in China and ahead of that launch event, the device has appeared on Geekbench database where it has been benchmarked. Geekbench’s appearance doesn’t usually reveal so much about the specification of the phone but it does reveal something.

xiaomi mi max 2

In this case, among the listed specs is what should either be a Snapdragon 626 chip or that of the Snapdragon 625. That is because the device is listed as coming with an octa-core MSM8953 processor clocked at 2.02GHz. Ordinarily, this is the SD 625, as the SD 626 chip comes with the model number MSM8953Pro. But the benchmark may have omitted the last three letters so, it’s possible the chip is the Snapdragon 626. Moreover, we have had a leak pointing at the SD 626 on board the Mi Max 2.

In addition to the processor, the Max 2 is listed with 4GB of RAM and it runs Android 7.1.1 Nougat which will most likely be embedded with Xiaomi’s MIUI interface. The Geekbench listing did not reveal any further detail but the Mi Max 2’s appearance on GFXBench revealed the device’s processor uses the Adreno 506 GPU and that is featured by both the SD 625and SD 626 chips. GFXBench also revealed a 6.4-inch 1080p display, 18GB of native storage, a 12MP rear camera as well as a 5MP front-facing camera for selfies.

Exclusive: Here’s A Glimpse of an Upcoming Bezel-less Nubia Smartphone & It’s Beautiful!

We all are excited to meet the new bezel-less flagship from Nubia, the Nubia Z17, which is expected to release on June 1. However, it looks like the company is working on another super flagship, apart from the Z17. We are not yet sure about the name of this upcoming device but what we have today from our source is a glimpse of the flagship and it’s definitely beautiful. We don’t get to see the entire smartphone in this leaked image, but the bezel-less design looks quite impressive.

Nubia Z17 Real Image - Gizmochina

The first thing we notice about the phone is that it has got a beautiful bezel-less display. The screen is curved on both the sides, once again confirming that the company is completely adopting a bezel-less design on its flagship phones. But it’s not just the sides, as the thickness of the top bezel is also impressive. It’s super thin, which is what we like these days and could, in fact, be thinner than Galaxy S8‘s bezel on the top.

While the display is the first thing that pops out in the image, if you look carefully at the top bezel what you’ll notice is there are two camera sensors on top. Now, having a camera sensor in such a thin frame would be great, but here, there’s a dual camera setup on the front, which is even more impressive. Considering how Nubia’s camera quality has always been stellar, this upcoming device could be capable of capturing amazing selfies.

Now note that Nubia’s recent releases (Nubia Z17 Mini and the Nubia M2) have dual camera setup at the back. So, there’s a very good chance that the phone features four cameras in total, making it a powerful camera flagship. Further, it is being said that the phone will come with the powerful Snapdragon 835 processor, ensuring that it has got the best chip in the market.

Considering how Nubia has a media event on June 1, it’s likely that we are set to see this beautiful flagship at that event alongside the Nubia Z17 flagship. This makes June 1 event an important date for all tech fans. Hopefully, we can get some more exclusive details about the flagship before its launch.

So, what do you think about the new phone’s design?

Nubia Z17 Will Be World’s First Smartphone with Quick Charge 4.0

Qualcomm announced its next-generation Quick Charge 4.0 around November last year, which it disclosed would come with the Snapdragon 835 chip. The Snapdragon 835 is already rolling, with the Samsung Galaxy S8, Xiaomi Mi 6 and Xperia XZ Premium packing the chip, but we are yet to see the QC 4.0 on any of these smartphones. This is perhaps due to the Samsung Galaxy Note 7 explosion saga.

Nubia Z17

The Galaxy S8 only featured support for a 15W QC 2.0 fast charge, while the Mi 6 and Xperia XZ Premium come with support for 18W QC 3.0 fast charge support. That is about to change as Nubia has now teased that its upcoming flagship, the Z17 would feature the Qualcomm Quick Charge 4.0. The Nubia Z17 is already confirmed to feature the Snapdragon 835 processor which makes it just the right candidate to feature support for QC 4.0. Nubia is reported to have revealed this via a Weibo post which, unfortunately, we could not locate. The post was accompanied by a poster which shows that the device would be launched on June 1, 2016.

As for the features, the QC 4.0 is not just faster, it’s designed to be more efficient and run cooler than prior generations.  When compared to Quick Charge 3.0, Quick Charge 4 is up-to 20 percent faster, or 30 percent more efficient, while charging up to 5° C cooler. The fast charge is touted as capable of delivering up to 50% of charge in just 5 minutes.

Leaked Poster Reveals Meizu-Nokia Joint Event Next Month

There is no denying it that Meizu has something for Nokia. If you still remember, Meizu sent out the invite for the M2 along with a Nokia 1110 back in 2015. Last year, they did something similar when they sent out invites for another launch along with a Nokia E71.

These actions were interpreted to mean there was a Meizu-Nokia collaboration on the products but as we all know, none of them had any links to Nokia.

Meizu-Nokia Joint Event

A teaser poster that was released online yesterday reveals we may be seeing that partnership manifest come next month. The poster has the iconic “Nokia handshake” with two lines of text that roughly translates into “paying tribute to the classic” and “Meizu Blue Charm and Nokia Joint Conference Next Month”.

The poster doesn’t reveal much. Some speculate that Nokia may be working with Meizu to release some of its phones with Flyme OS. It is still a wide guess for now.

Wimius L1 4k Camera Review – Great Value for $72

The market of cheap action cameras is pretty crowded but we just came across an affordable camera made by Wimius. It costs just about $70 but it has quite a few features like 20MP Sony CMOS sensor and 4k video recording. Learn more in our full review.

VIDEO REVIEW

[embedyt] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e1azDfDoTHM[/embedyt]

UNBOXING

As usual to most of the cheap action cameras, it comes with a ton of accessories that include all sorts of mounts, cradles and so on. A few notable accessories are a waterproof case, a spare battery, and the bike cradle.

DESIGN and FEATURES

The Wimius L1 sports a bit different than classic action camera design. It has a quadratic shape, it’s made of plastic, the build quality is pretty good and it is very light.

The buttons are nice and tactile and we have a few ports that include the micro USB, micro HDMI, and the microSD card slot.

As for the camera, we have a beefy 20MP SONY IMX078 CMOS sensor with 170° wide angle lens. There is also Novatech 96660+ chipset that does the image processing.

A 2” display does not have the highest resolution but it gets the job done for an action camera and I had no issues seeing it indoors or outdoors.

FUNCTIONALITY

You can navigate through the menus using the buttons and the user interface is pretty straightforward. You can adjust the resolution, play with the image settings and adjust quite a few different settings if you wish so but I guess that most of us just use the auto-mode. You can also view the pictures you took or the videos you shot straight on the camera display. Check out the video review for a user interface walkthrough.

The camera also has a built-in Wifi and that means that you can connect it to your phone using the app. The app allows you to use the phone as a viewfinder. There is a slight delay like on most of the action cameras.  You can also watch the videos you shot or adjust some settings and so on.

IMAGE QUALITY

In order to test the quality of 4k and 1080p video, I used the Zhiyun Rider-M gimbal for action cameras. It stabilizes the footage of action cameras very well.

This camera can shoot videos at the max. resolution of 4k at 24fps. I have to say that the video quality is pretty good for such a cheap camera. Sure, there could be more detail but you simply can’t ask more for the price. The 2.5k video at 30fps looks a bit smoother due to a higher count of frames per second but naturally, there is a bit less detail. 1080p video at 30fps looks pretty good for a cheap camera. 1080p video at 60fps is probably my favorite format for action cameras if you shoot a lot of moving objects or you move quickly yourself. The sound recording quality is terrible, like on most of the cheap action cameras. Slow-motion video at 720p is usable but there could be a lot more detail.

As for still image quality, it is really good for a cheap action camera. There is a good amount of detail, pictures look quite sharp and even color reproduction is decent.

Download full resolution camera samples

BATTERY LIFE

The 1000mAh battery performs great knowing the fact that the camera has a 2” display. I could get 1:20 h of 4k video recording and around 3 hours of total usage per charge.

CONCLUSIONS

All in all, the Wimius L1 4k Action Camera is a great choice for those who don’t want to spend hundreds for a GoPro but still want to have a small device that can shoot videos or take pictures.

For the price of about $70, video and still image quality are really good. Finally, if you are looking for a cheap action camera, the Wimius L1 is a good offering for the price.

Ulefone Gemini Pro is Official: Sports Helio X27, 4GB RAM & Android 7.1.1

Earlier today, Ulefone released its new flagship phone, the Ulefone Gemini Pro. The new smartphone sports dual rear cameras packed in a beautiful metallic body.

Ulefone Gemini Pro

The Ulefone Gemini Pro features a 5.5-inch FHD display with Gorilla Glass 3. It is powered by Mediatek’s Helio X27 clocked at 2.6GHz and paired with 4GB of RAM. There is 64GB of storage on board with the option for expansion via a SD card slot (256GB Max).

Its unique selling point is its dual Sony IMX258 13MP rear cameras that are positioned at the top left corner along the antenna line. One sensor shoots in monochrome while the other captures chromatic images. This should allow for better pictures under low-light conditions. Flanking the camera on the right, is a LED flash that also sits on the antenna line.

The Gemini Pro will be able to record in 4K, take bokeh photos, 3D images, and also have a super night mode function. The front camera doesn’t get left out of the action. Ulefone has put a 13MP sensor with soft light for selfies. Sitting at the bottom of the display is a physical home button that doubles as a fingerprint scanner.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Hatsune Miku Edition Is Super Popular In Japan: Listed At Crazy Price

Xiaomi launched the Redmi Note 4X with its beautiful design and modest specs lineup around February this year. The company took things a step further when it announced a limited Hatsune Miku special edition of the model. The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4X Hatsune Miku Edition brings out the sleek and premium design the smartphone features as a result of the attractive color it adorns.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 4x hatsune miku edition

The customised version comes in green paint job only and has a fused antenna band design that is coated in silver. The camera and fingerprint sensor has a silver coated thin ring surrounding them. The sleek design alone doesn’t account for the 1,299 Yuan ($189) price tag the Redmi Note 4X Hatsune Miku edition has got. In addition to the sleek smartphone,  Xiaomi also included a gift box containing a limited edition mobile power bank, a customised casing for the phone as well as the opportunity to download Hatsune theme in the future.

Turns out the Redmi Note 4X Hatsune version is very popular in Japan where the VOLACOID character Hatsune Miku originated from. The smartphone was recently seen in a Japanese retail shop in the Akihabara business district and the price was very shocking. The device was listed up for sale for 49,800 Yen which is about 3,066 Yuan. That is more than twice the original amount the device is sold in China and the poster shows it is the same model with the one sold in China. It is relieving to note that the power bank and other gift items are still included and are not being sold separately. That is likely the handiwork of one smart retailer who, perhaps, paid a premium to get the models imported from China.

OPPO & Huawei Came Together For This Clone & We Can Call It The Ugly OPPO P9

China is full of interesting smartphones and we have got some of the finest flagships in the market from this country. However, there’s another side to the Chinese market, which is also quite popular internationally, and it’s the Chinese smartphone clone market. While big brands like Huawei, Xiaomi and OPPO are set to create its own identity with special specs and features distinguishing its phones from international brands, there are some phones which imitate these big brands.

OPPO P9 Clone 01

OPPO is huge in China at the moment and the company seems to be doing very well in the market. So, there’s no surprise that China has a number of OPPO clones. One of the recent clones we managed to spot is actually quite unique. If you loved Huawei P9’s design but are desperate to get OPPO’s branding on the back, here’s something for you.

RELATED: OPPO R11 Will Feature The New Snapdragon 660 Chipset

OPPO P9 Clone 02

This is what an OPPO branded Huawei P9 would look like, and we may even call it the OPPO P9. And guess what! There’s the Leica certification at the back as well. So, if Huawei and OPPO had an ugly baby, it would probably look like this. I mean, the build quality sucks for sure, look at the cracks on the back. Plus, the top band looks like a sticker, where we can see the dual cameras. Needless to say, the built quality is less than impressive. But you do get 4G+ VoLTE, or so it says!

OPPO P9 clone

No ideas about the pricing of the device though, but it surely will be super cheap. We have seen many clones that actually have pretty good built quality (unlike this one) and it’s very easy to mistake a clone for the real one. So, if you are ever in China looking for a smartphone, make sure to check the product before purchase and stick to the popular stores in the area.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 Could Be A Powerbank With Its Large Battery, Reveals Leak

Xiaomi is all set to officially launch the Mi Max 2 in an event scheduled for tomorrow. Ahead of the launch, there is one last dash leak of the phablet which suggests that it would feature a USB Type-C port that would make it support reverse charging. The leaked image of what could pass for the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 connected to an iPhone with an OTG cable and the iPhone 7 was actually charging. Which suggests that the Mi Max 2 was reverse charging the iPhone.

Xiaomi Mi Max 2

Now, it would be an awesome feature if the Mi Max 2 joins the league of mobile devices with OTG functions meaning apart from getting a phablet-sized smartphone, buyers would also get a power bank which can come in handy someday. The good thing about USB-OTG is that the Mi Max 2 would be able to charge not just a second smartphone but other gadgets like camera and others.

xiaomi mi max 2

While we cannot say if this is actually true, it aligns properly with an earlier rumour that the Mi Max 2 would pack a large 5,349mAh battery, higher than the large  4,850mAh battery on the Mi Max. A battery that size would be enough to power the device and charge other gadgets. But we’ll advise you take this with a pinch of salt because the entire charging cord is not visible so we’ll know if it’s the Mi Max 2 that is actually charging the iPhone.

In addition, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 will feature Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon 660 chip which comes with power efficiency. There is a base model packing an equally power-efficient Snapdragon 626 chip. Other features include a 4GB + 64GB version and a higher 6GB + 128GB version.  The Xiaomi phablet is also expected to come with a 12MP Sony IMX378 sensor at the rear and a 5MP  sensor up front. As for the price, an earlier rumor hints that the Mi Max 2’s price may be adjusted slightly but will still fall between 1499 Yuan and 1699 Yuan, not exceeding 1999 Yuan at most. We’ll find out more about this device tomorrow.

Vivo XPlay6 Gets A Cheaper Version For The Less Storage Hungry Users

The Vivo Xplay6 was released last year sporting a dual curved 5.46-inches 2K display and a Snapdragon 820 processor. Although there were complaints regarding the choice of the chipset seeing as the Snapdragon 821 was already in the market, the Vivo Xplay6 has gone on to sell a lot of units.

Originally launched with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, Vivo is breathing new life into the phone by releasing a new variant. The new version will have 64GB of storage but still keeps the 6GB RAM. However, just like the original, it wouldn’t have a MicroSD card slot.

Vivo Xplay6 64GB

You still get a 4080mAh battery, a 12MP Sony IMX362 sensor paired with a 5MP camera for depth of field effect on the rear and a 16MP front facing camera. There is also a fingerprint scanner embedded underneath the home button.

Samsung Galaxy S9, S9 Plus Codenamed as Star, Star 2 Arriving with Front Fingerprint Reader, Dual Rear Cameras

Samsung has reportedly started working on Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus. The 2017 Samsung flagship phone, the Galaxy S8 was codenamed as Dream. A South Korean publication has revealed that the “Star” and “Star 2” are respective codenames of Galaxy 9 and Galaxy S9 Plus.

The publication claims that the Galaxy S9 will be releasing in the first half of 2018. Since it is codenamed as Star, speculations have it that it may not be the rumored foldable phone from Samsung. Compared to Galaxy S8, the production of Galaxy S9 is 3-4 months ahead of schedule. This is probably because Samsung is adhering to a rigid quality control process after the premature death of Galaxy Note 7 in 2016. Hence, the South Korean firm may announce the Galaxy S9 early in 2018.

Codenames usually denote a characteristic of the device. A Samsung representative had revealed in an earlier interview that the Galaxy S8 was codenamed as Project Dream because it was the company’s dream to overcome Apple with Galaxy S8.

Since the Samsung Galaxy S9 is in its initial stage of development, it is difficult to predict the specifications of the 2018 flagship phone. The Galaxy S9 would be sporting a similar display like the one present on Galaxy S8. It suggests that Samsung Galaxy S9 may continue to feature bezel-less ‘Infinity Display” that was introduced on Galaxy S8. The Galaxy S9 is also pegged to come with a front-mounted fingerprint reader and dual rear cameras.

Rumors have it that the Samsung Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9 Plus would be powered by the alleged Snapdragon 845 chipset, the successor SoC for Snapdragon 835. A report from previous month revealed that Qualcomm and Samsung have reportedly began working on the Snapdragon 845. The report also revealed that the Galaxy S9 would be featuring a 5.8-inch screen whereas the Galaxy S9 Plus would be packed with 6.2-inch display like the Galaxy S8 duo.

Samsung is also expected to include a 6.3-inch Infinity Display on the Galaxy Note 8 phablet which is codenamed as “Great.” It is expected to launch by August or September this year. Before it, the company is expected to launch the Galaxy Note FE (refurbished version of Galaxy Note 7) in the next month. It is said to be codenamed as Grace R.
