To tackle the rising competition from Microsoft Surface tablets, Samsung has unveiled the Galaxy Book 2, a successor of the Galaxy Book launched last year. Yesterday at an event in the New York, Samsung pulled off the wraps from Galaxy Book 2. The new ‘always on, always connected’ PC/tablet packs 12-inch 2160×1440 Super AMOLED display with Gigabit LTE connectivity. In order to increase the productivity, Samsung has also added a keyboard and S Pen.
Unlike the primitive Windows tablets, it is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 850 instead of Intel Core m3. The new chip from Qualcomm would offer 30% better performance and battery life than the PCs running Snapdragon 835. Samsung has touted that it would provide a next level performance along with the better Windows experience.
Speaking at the event, Senior Vice President and General Manager at Samsung Electronics America, Alanna Cotton “The way the world works is undergoing an incredible transformation, and users need technology that keeps them connected and ready for anything when they’re out in the world getting things done.” He further added that “The Galaxy Book2 brings together Samsung’s hardware and connectivity leadership with innovations from Qualcomm Technologies, Inc. and Microsoft for a two-in-one that uniquely delivers PC productivity and superior mobility.”
It gives you the freedom to work anywhere without worrying about the battery backup. Its battery can last up to 20 hours of continuous usage or two full work days. Further, Samsung has added adaptive fast charging technology to help users save some time.
The next major highlight is the usage of Gigabit LTE connectivity which helps users to get high network speeds. It is integrated with X20 modem and 4×4 MIMO support. Samsung Galaxy Book 2 is available with 4GB RAM and 128GB internal storage. In-camera department, there’s an 8-megapixel rear camera and 5-megapixel front camera for selfies.
In connectivity, it supports WiFi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac 2.4+5GHz, VHT80 MIMO, USB Type-C x2, microSD and 3.5mm jack. It is running on Windows 10 in S Mode along with accessories such as S Pen, Keyboard. To make it smarter, Samsung has added sensors like Accelerometer, Fingerprint Sensor, Gyro Sensor, Geomagnetic Sensor, and Light Sensor.
It will be available online from Microsoft Store, Samsung.com and AT&T at the price of $999.99 from November 2. Further, the availability will be extended to Sprint and Verizon.

Last month Apple announced a trio of new iPhones. It appears it isn’t done for the year as it has sent out invites for another event on October 30. There are speculations that the event is for the unveiling of the new iPad Pro.
Apple already launched a new iPad this year but that is the regular 9.7” iPad (2018). The model expected to launch on October 30 is the 2018 version of the iPad Pro. The tablet is expected to come in two sizes – a 12.9-inch version and a smaller 11-inch version.
The new iPad Pro will have very thin bezels according to CAD renders. It will also ditch Touch ID and the audio jack. There are also rumors it may launch with a new Apple Pencil. It is still uncertain if the iPads are the only products Apple will unveil. Do keep your fingers crossed as Apple may surprise us.
Xiaomi’s third-generation fitness tracker — the Xiaomi Mi Band 3, is now available for purchase in India through offline stores across the country. The Mi Band 3 was launched in India last month for Rs. 1,999 (approximately $28) and was available for purchase through Amazon and Mi Online Store.
The Xiaomi Mi Band 3 features a 0.78-inch OLED touchscreen, having a screen resolution of 128 x 80 pixels, which is 80 percent bigger than the screen on Mi Band 2. The display, which has 2.5D curved design, comes with a recessed touch-enabled control button.
According to the company, the display is designed with an aim to offer a better experience for viewing/rejecting calls and messages, including WhatsApp Messages. In addition to viewing messages and call view/reject feature, the Mi Band 3 can also provide 3-day weather forecast as well as an alarm clock, which can be turned off from the touchscreen.
Other features include heart rate monitor, daily steps count and sedentary reminder as a part of the health management functions. It is water and dust resistance, and is completely waterproof for up to 50 meters, ensuring that it works perfectly even when the user is swimming.
One of the crucial thing for a wearable device is the battery life and Xiaomi has taken care of the battery department. The newly launched Mi Band 3 comes with an improved 110mAh battery, which the company claims can last for up to 20 days on a single charge.
The battery is 60 percent bigger than its predecessor and the company claims that it provides 3x longer battery life compared to other popular fitness trackers in the market. The device is compatible with both Android as well as iOS devices.
The Vivo NEX is known for its pop-up front-facing camera as a solution to its full-screen display. There are other smartphones that have copied the design but a new info surfaced today, revealing that Xiaomi considered it at a point. There are even images of a prototype.
In the build-up to the launch of the Mi MIX 3 which launches on October 25, Xiaomi’s spokesman, Donovan Sung, revealed details about the Mi MIX series’ development. In a tweet posted today, he said Xiaomi applied for a patent for a pop-up camera back in 2015. They even made prototypes which he shared images of.
Background on Mi MIX: As early as 2015, we applied for a patent for a popup camera, and made some test devices.
We ultimately chose the sliding form factor for #MiMIX3 to lay the groundwork for an even better full screen display experience, especially for photography.#Xiaomipic.twitter.com/P7PBrGrpTK
As you can see in the images, the phone does have a pop-up camera similar to that of the Vivo NEX. Though, there are differences. For example, the pop-up camera in the Vivo NEX is closer to the edge of the phone but that of this Xiaomi prototype sits close to the center.
[envira-gallery id=”217742″]
There is also a photo of the phone’s rear with the back plate off. Notice that there is no camera on the rear. It’s understandable since this is a prototype. If you look closely at the pop-up camera setup, you should see a rubber seal for protection against dust and water. You can also see the pistons that raise the camera up when needed. This prototype also has a has a 3,400mAh battery like the Mi MIX 2 and Mi MIX 2S.
Xiaomi is literally eating its cake and having it with the Mi Mix 3. The device will come with the highest screen to body ratio found on any of the company’s smartphone, thanks to the slider design. Xiaomi has released a teaser poster which contains the render of the device. The official render is meant to tease the exact configuration of the front camera setup and there is a surprise. The render confirms the Mi Mix 3 will come with a dual selfie camera setup and there is even a soft flash onboard. That is an unexpected setup but the slider design made it possible. The front main camera is also confirmed on the teaser poster to be a 24MP sensor. We expect the camera to be capable of capturing stunning selfies and videos with vivid clarity and high resolution. It wasn’t disclosed if the secondary sensor is a wide angle or bokeh sensor. The Mi Mix 3 is also expected to house a dual camera setup at the rear.
Apart from this cool feature, other stunning features onboard the upcoming flagship includes an on-screen fingerprint sensor. At the moment, the Mi 8 Explorer edition and Mi 8 screen fingerprint version are the only two Xiaomi models to have the new technology. In addition, the Mi Mix 3 will also come with a variant having 10GB of RAM onboard. We still wonder if that isn’t an overkill. The flagship phone will also come with 5G support. We expect the device to be unveiled on October 25 in China.
After a couple of months of the official release of Android 9.0 Pie mobile operating system, Sony has now finally announced the Android Pie update schedule for its smartphones.
While the Sony Xperia XZ3 ships with Android 9 Pie pre-installed, the company has already rolled out the latest Android version update for its Xperia XZ2 and Xperia XZ2 Compact.
Now, the company says that some of the devices will receive the Android Pie update sooner than expected, while the schedule for other devices is on time. Sony adds that the premium devices from the company will receive the update within next few weeks.
The Android 9 Pie update for the Xperia XZ Premium, Xperia XZ1 and Xperia XZ1 Compact will be rolled out from 26th October while the Xperia XZ2 Premium will get the Android Pie update from 7th November. However, the users of XA2, XA2 Ultra, and XA2 Plus will have to wait till 4th March to receive the latest update.
Do note that the phone’s won’t necessarily get the new update on the same day it gets released. The company has said that the software update rollout is a phased process and when you’ll receive the update depends on a number of factors, including your location and your network carrier.
Alongside the Mate 20 and 20 Pro, Huawei surprised everyone by unveiling another top-end variant dedicated to gamers and productivity. Besides being one of the most powerful flagships of the year, Huawei Mate 20 X is the world’s first non-Samsung smartphone to support a stylus with 4,096 pressure levels. That is why we decided to compare it with the latest Samsung device supporting a pen: the Galaxy Note 9.
Triple 40 + 20 MP + 8 MP f/1.8 and f/2.2 and f/2.4
24 MP f/2.0 front camera
Dual 12 + 12 MP f/1.5-2.4 and f/2.4
8 MP f/1.7 front camera
BATTERY
5000 mAh
Fast charging 22.5W
4000 mAh, Fast Charging, Wireless Charging
ADDITIONAL FEATURES
Hybrid Dual SIM slot, IP53 certification, stylus support
Hybrid Dual SIM slot, IP68 certification, stylus support
Design
Yes, Huawei Mate 20 X has a higher screen-to-body ratio and a waterdrop notch, but it is not the one I prefer when it comes to the look. It is definitely too big and it is not suitable to always keep it in a pocket. Further, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 is fully waterproof thanks to the IP68 certification, so it also has a better build quality.
Display
Besides being more compact and having a waterproof certification, Samsung Galaxy Note 9 has a display with a higher view quality. I believe that iPhone Xs Max has the only display which can currently compete with the one of the Galaxy Note 9. The new Samsung flagship features an HDR10-compliant AMOLED panel with a QHD+ resolution and an incredibly high brightness. In case you hate notches, you will be glad to know that this display is notchless. Huawei Mate 20 X has just a bigger display (one of the biggest ones), which may be more comfortable for gamers.
Specs & Software
We still had no chance to test the Kirin 980 chipset which is on board of the Huawei Mate 20 X, so we can not say for sure if it will provide better performance than the SoC of Galaxy Note 9. But on the paper, it is a great processor with its 7 nm production process and we expect to perform better. On the other hand, you can get the Galaxy Note 9 with more RAM and more internal storage thanks to the 8/512 GB configuration.
Camera
2018 is the year of Huawei if we talk about mobile devices’ cameras. After releasing Huawei P20 Pro with the first triple camera setup in the world (which delivers a way better photo quality than the whole concurrency in my opinion), the Chinese company decided to include the same camera department on the Huawei Mate 20 X as well. So, the camera of Huawei Mate 20 X will shoot better photos than Samsung Galaxy Note 9. But the latter is still an amazing camera phone with its variable aperture and incredibly clear photos in every light condition.
Huawei Mate 20 X not only has a bigger battery than Samsung Galaxy Note 9, but it also features one of the biggest batteries ever seen on a flagship. Given that the phone also comes with a Full HD+ display which should consume less than Note 9’s QHD+ panel, we expect it to last a lot more than its opponent on a single charge.
Price
None of these devices is affordable. While Samsung Galaxy Note 9 was launched with a price tag of $999/€1029, Huawei Mate 20 X is going to hit the shelves with a price tag of €900. There is not a clear winner of this comparison: if you want a device that is more like a phone instead of being more like a tablet, and you also want a better display and build quality, choose the Galaxy Note 9. But if you prefer camera performance and battery life, go for the Huawei Mate 20 X. It is all about your needs.
Huawei Mate 20 X vs Samsung Galaxy Note 9: PRO and CONS
After taking a break from the negative spotlight for a couple of months, Essential is back in the news. Reports have surfaced saying the company has laid off about 30 percent of its workforce.
Essential has a staff strength of about 120, that means about 36 people were laid off. According to Bloomberg, the affected members of staff were from the sales, marketing, and hardware departments.
A spokeswoman for the company said in an e-mail that it was a tough decision to make and they are sorry about the impact. The mail also says “we are confident that our sharpened product focus will help us deliver a truly game changing consumer product.”
Essential launched its first phone, the PH-1 more than a year ago. Due to a number of issues the phone didn’t do well. It canceled plans of a successor this year and even suspended some other hardware devices it had in development. Other than the 360° VR camera, Essential has not released a new modular product for the PH-1. An audio attachment for the phone has been in development for months but still doesn’t have a release date.
There was a report last week that the Andy Rubin-led company is working on an AI phone that will learn the owner’s habits and be able to respond to emails and messages. It will also have a small screen. We don’t know if Essential is still going forward with this plan.
Its confirmed, the Black Shark 2 launches on October 23. Following the leaked poster that surfaced a few days ago, Black Shark itself has confirmed that it has a product launch on Tuesday, October 23 and the official posters confirm it is for the Black Shark 2.
Black Shark has released two posters confirming the event. Both of them have a silhouette of the phone as the background. As you can see, the speaker grille above the display is the same as that in these live photos from yesterday. The phone also has a neon green line that runs around the frame.
[envira-gallery id=”217712″]
The second poster shows the bottom half of the phone’s rear and also counts down to the event which is five days from today. Wondering who is on both posters? That’s Zhang Daxian, a Chinese actor and game anchor who will be at the event.
On the one hand, Xiaomi is teasing the successor of Mi Mix series, while on the other, it is rolling out an update for the Mi Mix 2S. It is one of the Xiaomi’s flagship phones which is a part of Google’s Android Pie Beta program. The update is available for download via an external link, and its OTA is also going live. The new update brings various new changes including new features, fixes, and performance improvements.
Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S is all set to get the new full-screen gestures, new UI tweaked for full view display and much more. Further, it brings the whole optimized system with Adaptive battery feature which learns to save some power by learning from the user’s usage patterns. There are various features that Xiaomi has added in the latest MIUI 10 which helps to improve the overall productivity of the device.
Xiaomi has added many AI driven features such as new pre-loading of apps, camera-based AI scene recognition, and AI beautify. Overall, it will improve the camera capabilities. There’s a whole new redesign of essential elements on the phone’s screen like the recent menu, notification panel, icons, volume drawer, etc.
Additionally, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S features a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 with 6GB of RAM and a 6-inch bezel-less display. It is coupled with Adreno 630 GPU for graphics and 8GB of RAM on board. Similarly, Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 is getting teased to carry a 10GB RAM with a 100% screen-to-body ratio. It is going to be the first smartphone to carry 5G compatibility. Xiaomi Mi Mix 3 will revolutionize the industry through its sliding design allowing the company to use its front to fit in the full-view display along with an in-screen fingerprint scanner.
Let’s wait and watch! Until then you can enjoy Android Pie 9.0 update on Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S.
Any discussion centred on the revolution in the display style of smartphones can’t be complete without mentioning Xiaomi‘s Mi Mix flagship. That doesn’t in anyway take away the efforts of Japanese phone maker Sharp who had given us near bezel-less models even before the trend got caught up like wildfire. We’ve seen the full-screen design evolve from having ultra-thin bezels at the top to house the selfie camera, to the use of notch at the top for the camera and speakers. Lately, OEMs have experimented with waterdrop notch design and the latest is slider design. A source familiar with the industry has hinted that we could see another design style next year.
The display open hole camera technology will become the mainstream technology in 2019, then you think, where is the camera position better? pic.twitter.com/4mh5G7CbeT
According to the source, the display hole camera technology will become the mainstream technology that would be used by OEMs in 2019. The tipster shared a couple of renders of the design with the camera sensor lodged in a module that can be at the top centre, top left or right corner of the display.
The design will give OEMs the leverage to further reduce the bezels that would be at the top edge. We have no idea how the earpiece would be crammed into the phone. Of course, this is just a rumour and should be taken with a pinch of salt. There is no indication that any of the known phone manufacturers are working on models with that design. We won’t entire write it off, though. It took the iPhone X to make the notch design become so popular. If this new design style should get adopted by any of the popular OEMs and comes out impressive, many others would want to catch in on the success.
Lenovo already released two (hybrid) smartwatches this year – the Watch 9 and the Watch X. Today, it announced two new ones – the Watch S, another hybrid smartwatch; and the Watch C, a smartwatch for kids.
Lenovo Watch S
The Lenovo Watch S sits in between the Watch 9 and the Watch X. It is actually the Watch 9 with a new dial design, sapphire glass, and calfskin leather. There is no OLED screen like the Watch X and its also missing a heart rate sensor, blood pressure monitor and all the other sensors the Watch X boasts of.
The Watch S does sleep tracking, calorie counting, and records the number of steps you have taken. It can also notify you of calls and messages by vibrating. All these can be viewed and programmed inside the Lenovo Watch app. The Watch S also has a 5 ATM water-resistant rating.
[envira-gallery id=”217703″]
Lenovo is charging ¥238 (~$34) for the Watch S and it is available in black and red. It will go on sale on Lenovo’s official online store on October 30 at 10 AM.
Lenovo Watch C
The Lenovo Watch C is for kids and unlike the Watch S, it is a proper smartwatch. It has a 1.3-inch AMOLED square-shaped display that is covered in Gorilla Glass. Above the display is a camera that guardian(s) can remotely control to take a picture at intervals to know their child is safe.
The Watch C has GPS (Glonass, A-GPS) for location tracking and can connect via Wi-Fi. It also has a built-in compass. With the companion app, guardians(s) can set the location for home and school and get a notification when their ward arrives at any of these places.
There is also a speaker and microphone in case you need to speak to your ward. Kids can also use the watch to call their friends who own the same type of watch. Lenovo has also included an SOS button for emergencies. The watch has an IPX7 rating and silicone straps. Lenovo says it is 12.8mm thick and weighs just 42g.
Google recently launched its new generation of Pixel smartphones — Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL. Yesterday, it was revealed that the Pixel 3 XL comes with a display panel from Samsung.
Given that both the devices are almost same, it seemed that the Google could have used the same panel for the non-XL model as well. However, that is not the case. A teardown of the Pixel 3 reveals that it comes with an OLED display panel from LG.
This is the same panel that was used in last year’s Pixel 2 XL. For those who are unaware, the Pixel 2 XL was widely criticized because of the issues pertaining to temporary image retention, smearing of black colors at low brightnesses, and graininess.
The year’s display panel of Pixel smartphones is completely opposite than the last year’s. Last year’s Pixel 2 used a display panel from Samsung while the Pixel 2 XL featured a display panel from LG’s display division. Samsung’s experience with notched display could be the reason for this flip.
Last year, it was reported that Google is planning to invest around $880 million in South Korea-based LG Display as it plans to secure a stable supply of flexible OLED panels for the Pixel 3-series smartphones. The investment from Google was reported to help the facility of LG boost display production.
Many reviewers have suggested that the 5.5-inch 18:9 display panel of the Pixel 3 is almost same as the 6.3-inch 18.5:9 display of Pixel 3 XL. Google notes identical 100,000:1 super contrast ratio, full 24-bits depth, and true black levels on the specifications page for each phone.
As far the phone’s specs are concerned, the Pixel 3 comes with a 5.5-inch 18:9 display with 2160 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. The front and rear of the phone is protected by Corning’s Gorilla Glass 5.
There’s a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset under the hood, but it’s under-clocked at 2.5GHz which the company justifies as a step to save battery power. It also comes with a dedicated security chip – the Titan M, which keeps the OS and your passwords secure.
It packs 4GB of RAM and comes in two storage options — 64GB and 128GB and as usual, it lacks support for storage expansion. It has IP68 ratings, a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor, and a USB Type-C port for charging.
The phone still comes with a single rear camera of 12.2-megapixel with f/1.8 aperture and a 1.4um pixel size. On the front side, there’s a dual 8-megapixel sensors — one with 97-degree wide-angle lens and another is a standard sensor with f/1.8 aperture. The camera comes with bunch of features, including Top Shot and Super Res Zoom.
It runs Android 9.0 Pie operating system out-of-the-box and is powered by a 2,915mAh battery with 18W fast charging support. The 64GB model is priced at $799 while the 128GB storage model costs $800.

Huawei recently expanded the Enjoy series with the introduction of the Enjoy Max and Enjoy 9 Plus in China. The launch event was an opportunity for the company to talk about how successful the series has been. Huawei disclosed that it has sold over 45 million Enjoy smartphones worldwide. That is within the last 3 years since the lineup was introduced.
Huawei first introduced the Enjoy series in 2015 when it launched the Enjoy 5 and Enjoy 5s. The models stood out over the year because of their impressive design and affordable pricing. The series was an instant hit among very budget-conscious buyers that were looking for a device in the 1,000 yuan to 1,999 yuan price range (around $145 to $289). In 2016, the Huawei Enjoy 6 and Enjoy 6s were introduced to build on the successes of its predecessors. Indeed, the success of the 2016 models led to the launch of three models in 2017 – the Enjoy 7, 7S, and 7 Plus. Earlier this year, Huawei had launched the Enjoy 8, Enjoy 8e, and Enjoy 8 Plus and just when we thought that was all, the Enjoy 9 Plus and Enjoy Max models were ushered in.
The whole purpose of flooding the market with new models is mainly to rack up more sales. The two new models will no doubt help Huawei sell a few more million units of the series before the year’s end.
