Magic Leap working to bid for US Military augmented reality headsets contract

In the near future, Magic Leap Inc. might get a US military contract to build augmented reality headsets. The US army is now turning to the tech companies for reality equipment to give its soldiers an edge on the battlefield. According to tender documents, it is revealed that Magic Leap has already started doing its homework by partnering with other tech giants such as Microsoft and another startup Improbable.

magic leap ar

It could help Magic leap to gain 120000 headset orders from the US Military, raking up around $500 Million. As per the Army description, the deal would help to “increase lethality by enhancing the ability to detect, decide and engage before the enemy.” The new contract can change the Magic Leap’s vision on augmented reality, as currently, it is producing consumer-centric devices.

Magic Leap has also partnered with Sennheiser, an audio company specializing in the production of microphones, headphones and aviation headsets, to work on augmented space reality. The new partnership is done under the banner of Magic Leap’s “Works with Magic Leap” certification program. Sennheiser is coming with more news at the LEAP conference taking place in Los Angeles next month.

Magic Leap has recently announced the Magic Leap One Creator Editon, an AR headset for the general public. It has huge advancements but still, there are significant challenges which should be addressed before preparing for the Army equipment.

US Army has revealed that they have also attended meetings with other companies such as Microsoft for the HUD  3.0 program. Currently, they are reviewing the proposals, and a final decision will be out soon. It requires high-end equipment to portray the digital images of the physical world. Also, they want soldiers to use it in the practice of warfare and the real combats. US Army explained that “HUD 3.0 will allow the warfighter to ‘Train as You Fight,’ with identical training/operational weapons and equipment in any terrain,” the Army writes in a Statement of Objectives.”

It would be interesting to see, how Magic Leap manage to make their devices compatible with other environments such as forests, deserts, and artic from the present indoor environment compatibility.

Meizu 16X vs Oppo F9 vs Vivo V11: Specs Comparison

China became the homeland of affordable phones. With Apple releasing only flagship devices and Samsung struggling every day more to keep its first place in several Asian nations, Chinese smartphones seem to be becoming the best choice for people who want to save money. Meizu 16X, Oppo F9, and Vivo V11 are three devices able to provide huge performances, a good photo quality, and stunning aesthetics without being expensive flagships, and you just need about €300 to grab a unit. If you are asking yourself which unit should you bring to your home, this comparison will clear your ideas.

Design

In my opinion, if you love beautiful smartphones, Oppo F9 (also known as F9 Pro in India) is the one you should go for. It combines a stunning design with originality thanks to its gradient glass back with a diamond-like pattern. Even though it is less original, Vivo V11 (also known as V11 Pro) has nothing to envy with another glass back available in gradient colors. Further, both have a waterdrop notch and almost nonexistent bezels. Meizu 16X has the advantage of being symmetric due to its notchless display, but it is far from its opponents in terms of beauty.

Display

Meizu 16X and Vivo V11 are the ones with the most premium displays, especially thanks to the AMOLED technology making their color rich and brilliant. Further, they both feature an in-display fingerprint reader for authentication. Given the slight difference in viewing quality, you can choose the display by basing on your tastes: do you like a notchless display with more bezels or a notched one with almost absent bezels around it? If you prefer the first, then go for the Meizu 16X, else choose Vivo V11.

Specs & Software

No stories: Meizu 16X is the most powerful handset of the trio. It features the new upper-midrange SoC Snapdragon 710 by Qualcomm which is definitely the best Qualcomm’s chipset if we exclude the 800 series. At the second place there is Vivo V11 with its Snapdragon 660, while at the third, with just marginal differences in performance, there is Oppo F9 and its Helio P60 by MediaTek. All of these devices come with a highly customized Android fork: Flyme OS for Meizu 16X, Color OS for Oppo F9 and Funtouch OS for Vivo V11.

Camera

The camera department which convinces us the most, at least on the paper, is the one from Meizu 16X. We still did not have the chance to click a photo from this device as it was announced two days ago, but judging the specs we believe it will shoot better photos. It has a dual setup with OIS and a six-LED flash, as well as a laser autofocus mechanism: all things that improve photos and videos quality missing from the remaining two handsets which even feature lower resolutions for the secondary sensor.

Battery

Oppo F9 has the biggest battery and it should last a bit more than both Vivo V11 and Meizu 16X. Not only it offers a big capacity of 3500 mAh, but it also features the fastest charging technology: VOOC flash charge, which can provide 2 hours of talk time with just 5 minutes of charging. Given that it has the smallest battery with just 3100 mAh (against 3400 mAh of the Vivo V11), Meizu 16X should have the shortest battery life.

Price

Prices are not an element you should consider so much if you want to choose a device from these three handsets. Meizu 16X carries a $305 price tag, Oppo F9 sells for $330 or less depending on the channel, and Vivo V11 starts from $270 (it depends on the market). I believe Vivo V11 is the perfect compromise it combines a great design with satisfying performance, a good battery life, and a nice photo quality, but if you are one of those users who only care about having the best performance, or you want the best camera out there at a modest price, go for the Meizu 16X.

The same model is selling on Xiaomi’s online store for 3,199 Yuan (~$466). The new price cut has been introduced after the launch of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro that has arrived as an advanced edition of the Mi 8.

UMIDIGI A3 launching Sept. 28 with Triple SIM slots, Dual 4G VoLTE and Global Bands

Most smartphones are usually marketed as dual SIM phones with two SIM slots. In recent times, that has become a major selling point for some phones. Most especially the budget models that don’t usually have much to offer in other aspects like camera, SoC etc. Quite unfortunately, these phones usually don’t have separate slots for external microSD card. Instead, the second SIM slot doubles as the SD card slot. On high-end models packing 64GB or higher internal storage, this isn’t a problem. But for budget models which usually have 16GB of storage or even less, there is usually a high chance of using the second slot for expansion of the storage most times. In such cases, users are only confined to using just a single SIM slot. We haven’t seen too many attempts to address this issue but UMIDIGI is taking the bull by the horn by working on a budget model that would pack triple SIM slots. The device is dubbed UMIDIGI A3 and is confirmed to launch on September 28.UMIDIGI A3

The UMIDIGI A3 will have three SIM card slots and the third slot can be converted to an SD card slot. That still leaves users with two SIM slots. The most interesting part is that the first two SIM slots support dual 4G VoLTE connectivity, meaning the 4G network will run at the same time on both slots. This may likely be the first entry-level model to have such features. That isn’t all, the device will also come with dual cameras at the rear as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint sensor. UMIDIGI also hinted that the device will come with global bands and that should include band 20.

Nokia 7.1 Plus 360-degree renders leak design ahead of October launch

Few hours ago, HMD Global confirmed that it will be launching a new smartphone on Oct. 4.  Rumors are rife that the Finnish firm will be debuting Nokia 7.1 Plus smartphone on the said date. Yesterday, My Smart Price had shared a render of the upcoming Nokia 7.1 Plus phone. Today, the same publication has collaborated with popular tipster @OnLeaks to share the 360-degree renders of the smartphone.

Nokia 7.1 Plus CAD renders

The CAD renders of the Nokia 7.1 Plus show that it features a notched screen and a thick bottom bezel which includes the branding of the company. The backside of the phone is expected to feature a glass panel. It will be fitted with vertical dual camera setup followed by an LED flash. The ZEISS branding can be seen between the dual sensors. A fingerprint scanner is also present on the rear side of the Nokia 7.1 Plus. The bottom edge of the Nokia 7.1 Plus features a USB-C port and a 3.5mm audio jack.

The handset measures 149.8 x 71.2 x 8mm which indicates that it could be equipped with a 5.8-inch LCD display. The notch of the phone seems to house a front-facing camera, an earpiece and some other sensors. Previous leaks have suggested that the Nokia 7.1 Plus will support an aspect ratio of 19:9 and Full HD+ resolution of 2280 x 1080 pixels.

The Nokia 7.1 Plus will be yet another Android One phone from the Finnish firm. Probably, the handset may arrive as the first Nokia phone with Android 9 Pie onboard. The Snapdragon 710 chipset is expected to power the handset. Some of the other rumored features of the Nokia 7.1 Plus include 6 GB of RAM, 64 GB of storage and support for fast charging. The same phone may debut as Nokia X7 in China. As of this writing, there is no information available on the pricing of the Nokia X7.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro officially confirmed to launch globally soon

One aspect that the flagship Xiaomi Mi 8 was adjudged to have faltered by some was the lack of an on-screen fingerprint sensor. Instead, the device kept on with the popular rear-mounted fingerprint sensor which seems to be fading away gradually from latest flagship models. Xiaomi took care of that with the recent launch of the Mi 8 Pro. Xiaomi isn’t letting the frenzy generated by the launch die down as the Chinese company has officially announced a big news. Donovan Sung, Xiaomi’s Global spokesperson disclosed via a tweet that the Mi 8 Pro will be launching globally soon across the markets Xiaomi is present. Mr Sung also shared some unboxing photos of the device.

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro

The photos include a variant with a translucent glass back similar to the Mi 8 Explorer edition. The device is also available in Ochre Black and Twilight Gold. The device sports a 6.26-inch AMOLED display with an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. The device also packs an infra-red face unlock technology like the Mi 8. The use of infra-red ensures the phone can be unlocked in the dark using Face ID. As stated, the fingerprint security on the device includes an in-display fingerprint sensor.

The Mi 8 Pro is billed to go on sale in China on September 21. The global rollout may likely start in October and Europe is likely going to be the preferred debut destination for the company. We can’t say how soon Xiaomi will unveil the Mi 8 Pro in India but that may also happen in coming months.

Leaked video teases the Huawei Mate 20 Pro Underwater mode and square camera setup

Barely two days back, XDA Developers released the APK teardown said to be for an upcoming build of Huawei‘s Android 9.0 Oreo-based EMUI 9. The teardown was able to unravel some of the key features the upcoming Mate 20 Pro will have. One of the standout features which caught our attention was an Underwater mode. While the APK teardown doesn’t confirm anything, a new teaser that appeared on Weibo has confirmed the impending release of the Mate 20 Pro packing the Underwater mode. Huawei Mate 20 Pro

The short video clip shows a surfer on a sea with a square shape box meant to represent the phone’s camera capturing the action. The Underwater mode will allow users to “take clear shots in underwater environments.” The phone will be slotted into a plastic bag which Huawei may likely provide along with it an so, it can capture pictures without water doing damage to the device. The Mate 20 pro will likely have an IP67 rating but that won’t guarantee its safe for use underwater regardless of the depth. The mode will likely provide the software required to ensure the pictures shot in the underwater environment are of vivid clarity.  Since the capacitive touchscreen won’t function inside water, the mode would also let you shoot a picture with the Volume (-) button and take a video by pressing the Volume (+) button. Also, pressing the power key can turn the camera on or off.

Amazon launches four new Echo products dubbed Echo Dot, Show, Plus and Auto

The new devices include the Amazon Echo Dot, Echo Show, Echo Plus and Echo Auto. The four new gadgets all adopt affordable price tags and have as their main feature, the Alexa smart virtual assistant which is integrated with all four products. Among the lot, the Echo Auto is the entirely new product but the trio of Echo Plus, Echo Show and Echo Dot are upgraded versions of already existing Amazon smart home products.Echo Dot

Just that this time around, Amazon utilises a new fabric design instead of plastic. The smart speaker is also available in three colours. The new speaker is also said to be louder and richer. It also enables you to make calls, set reminders, add items to your shopping and to-do lists, or manage your calendar. Unfortunately, Amazon indicates that Echo Auto will not be available now. Huawei gave out power banks to Apple fans queuing for iPhones in Singapore

Huawei has taken the act of mocking the newly launched iPhones to the next level in seemingly funny way. In Singapore, those who were waiting overnight for the release of the iPhone XS and XS Max, were handed power banks by the China-based tech giant.

Some people wearing Huawei t-shirts started giving away power banks to the hundreds of people waiting in line to get their hands on the newly announced iPhones. Not just that, there’s a message on the power bank’s box which reads – “Here’s a power bank. You’ll need it. Courtesy of Huawei.”

The power banks that the Chinese company is handing out for free aren’t cheap or old units. The company is giving away Huawei’s SuperCharge 10,000mAh power banks, which are priced at around SD80 (approx. $59) per unit.

Huawei has been subtly trolling Apple ever since the new iPhones were announced. Just after the Apple launch event on September 12, the company posted a video on social media platforms that says “Thank you for letting us be the real hero for the year. See you in London 16.10.18.”

In case you don’t know, Huawei has scheduled a launch event in London on 16th October where the company will unveil its next-generation Mate-series phones — the Huawei Mate 20 and Mate 20 Pro. The Chinese manufacturer has already hinted about advanced features based on artificial intelligence on its upcoming flagships.

Samsung to launch Galaxy F foldable smartphone without Gorilla Glass

Here comes new information about the Samsung’s much-rumored Galaxy F foldable smartphone. As per the recent report, Samsung will not secure the Galaxy F foldable display with the Corning Gorilla Glass due to technological limitations. Due to some unknown reasons, Corning lost out on a chance to be a part of the Samsung’s first flexible smartphone. Instead, Samsung will use a special cover glass from Sumitomo Chemical of Japan to protect its display.

Samsung Foldable Phone

According to our folks at Sammmobile, Galaxy F can’t use the Gorilla glass “due to the former’s rigid nature.” Samsung is using transparent polyimide which posses durability properties making it suitable for the Galaxy F flexible form factor. Sammobile detailed that, “the strong glass wouldn’t allow the device to fold into half. Samsung will thus use a transparent polyimide supplied by Sumitomo Chemical of Japan. It would be less durable than Gorilla Glass but would allow the Galaxy F to retain its flexible form factor.”

Currently, it’s unknown why Samsung denied the Corning Gorilla Glass and is using the material from Sumitomo. Well, whatever has happened will be for the betterment of the device and as per the needs of the Samsung. As per the source, Samsung Galaxy F might release until next year, snubbing the rumors which slated it for the November launch.

Rumors are here from past various years revealing the specs, design and other aspects of the device. But, it seems that Samsung is in no hurry to launch the Foldable device as the foldable trend is still a couple of years away from now. Let’s wait and watch as it may take another six months to get the actual look of the Galaxy F foldable device.

Google Pixel 3 appears with 4,999 Yuan (~$729) pricing on JD

The Google Pixel 3 is now listed on the JD.com, a retailer site from China. The handset has appeared with a price tag of 4,999 Yuan (~$729). It is not the actual pricing of the Pixel 3 as the handset is yet to go official. The listing also contains some renders of the smartphone.

The renders showcase the design of both Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. However, these photos are just modified version of the renders that were created by popular tipster @OnLeaks. It is not surprising to see an unannounced phone on a retailer site. However, what’s interesting about the Pixel 3 listing on JD is that Google has never released its Pixel phones in China. Since Google is blocked in China, neither the Nexus phones nor the Pixel series were made available in the country. The JD listing of Pixel 3 suggests that the search engine could be planning to enter China again. However, there is no official confirmation on it yet.

Google Pixel 3 JD Listing

The Google Pixel 3 JD listing had carried the pricing of the smartphone. However, the listing has been updated as it only contains the renders of the phone at present. Rumors surrounding the Pixel 3 have revealed that the handset will be arriving with a 5.4-inch display that will support Full HD+ resolution and 18:9. The Snapdragon 845 SoC is expected to power the phone along with 4 GB of RAM. It is expected to come loaded with Android 9 Pie.

The back panel of the Google Pixel 3 is rumored to feature a single camera of 12-megapixel. The front panel of the phone is tipped to be equipped with 8-megapixel dual selfie snappers. The exact size of the battery of the Pixel 3 is not known yet. The handset is rumored to hit the market in 64 GB and 128 GB storage models.

Google has recently confirmed that it will be holding a launch event on Oct. 9 in New York City to announce the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL smartphones. It is speculated that the Pixel 3 and Pixel 3 XL phones may respectively cost $649 and $749.
