Finally, Samsung has given a hint that the highly anticipated foldable Galaxy X could debut next month. The official unleashing might happen at the Samsung’s Developer Conference slated for November 11.  In a recent tweet on the official handle, Samsung has published a video teasing Samsung Developer’s Conference depicting a two lines unfolding to become right-facing arrow and then converging into a single vertical line. It directly shows the nature of a foldable device which can be folded into these shapes.

We might be wrong, but most probably it looks like a teaser for both the foldable smartphone and the Samsung’s Developer Conference. The animation resembles the unfolding of a foldable design. Even if we check the slogan of this years’ SDC, then “the crossroads between the present and the future” can directly be matched with a foldable device.

Well, it is not for the first time that we are getting these kinds of teasers. Even, DJ Koh, some time ago said in an interview that the device is coming by the end of this year.

Those who are waiting for the Samsung foldable device, get ready for a burn-in pocket as it will be heftily priced. As per the recent report, its believed to be available for the price of $1800 (12000 Yuan, ₩2,000,000, £1,375). Samsung has delayed the foldable device launch various times to make it useful along with the flexible design aspect. Similarly, LG and Huawei are also developing a foldable device which will be useful rather than just being foldable.

Samsung has been working on its foldable smartphone for quite some time and according to the reports, the South Korean giant will unveil the smartphone early next year. Till now, it was believed that the upcoming Samsung foldable smartphone will be called Galaxy X but that might not be the case.

A tweet from Chinese tipster suggests that the phone could be the part of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy F series. The Samsung’s Galaxy F series is said to be “super” high-end, which fits the price range for the upcoming foldable smartphone. According to the previous reports, the Samsung’s foldable smartphone will be priced somewhere between $1500 and $2000.

The foldable smartphone from Samsung is said to be the most premium mobile phone from the company, above the Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Note series, which justifies the super high-end tag for the Galaxy F-series. But since there’s no evidence, take this information with a pinch of salt.

Also, there are reports that the company is also working on Galaxy R and Galaxy P series for the Chinese market and there’s a possibility that the Galaxy F is an extension of that and could be a China-exclusive smartphone lineup. The Galaxy R and Galaxy P series are for the low-range and mid-range offerings in China from the South Korean firm.

Samsung is currently gearing up to launch its next flagship smartphone — Galaxy Note 9, which is scheduled to get announced on 9th August in New York. The phone’s specs, feature, and pricing information have already been leaked online.

We all have heard a lot about Samsung’s upcoming foldable smartphone — the Samsung Galaxy X. The smartphone, which was rumored to launch soon, is now reportedly not going to launch anytime soon.

Salman Saeed, who’s the product manager of display technology at Qualcomm said in an interview that “we might not see the phone arrive as soon as recent rumors have teased.” He adds that it might be years until something along the lines of the foldable phone similar to the leaked Samsung patents becomes a reality.

The issue behind the delay is said to be related to the fine-tuning of the user experience as well as the durability. Saeed points to the transistors in the display architecture as being the weakest link and says that the components responsible for powering individual pixels “are not flexible enough today” to withstand frequent bending.

Salman Saeed further says that “they [phone manufacturers] haven’t really cracked the material science right now to produce electrodes that can repeatedly withstand bending and folding.” 

Last year, in September, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh had confirmed in an interview that the company would launch its first foldable smartphone in 2018. Later, there were reports suggesting that the Galaxy X could be a limited edition device that may only arrive in select markets. The Samsung Galaxy X has reportedly received certification from Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, and NRRA, which suggested that the phone could soon get launched.

The South Korean giant outed the technology years ago through a demo at Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but it seems that little has happened after that. While rumors and comments from Samsung executives have pointed to phone’s launch nearing, the device has failed to materialize so far.

Apart from Samsung, other smartphone OEMs, including Apple and LG are also speculated to be working on a foldable smartphone. However, Samsung could be the first company to debut a foldable phone.

According to the colleagues from Sammobile, SM-G888N0 is just a rugged phone which has been realized by Samsung for train personnel in South Korea.

The company is given the task to create the world’s first LTE-R network for trains in South Korea, and this device is part of this project. According to previous rumors, Samsung Galaxy X will be released in 2018 and an alleged patent has already surfaced. Does the model number SM-G888N0 ring any bell? For those who don’t remember, it is the model number for Samsung’s up-coming foldable smartphone – the Galaxy X.

The Galaxy X is not expected to launch until next year but a support page has showed up on the official Samsung Korea site. The page doesn’t include any specs but the fact that it is live is a another confirmation of the phone’s existence.

The Samsung Galaxy SM-G888N0 got Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certified months ago, but we still know next to nothing about its specs. However, the design is expected be the same hinge design like the ZTE Axon M, but with more of a flip-phone form factor than a book.

The core specs like the display size and processor are unknown. Will it be powered by the Snapdragon 845/Exynos 9810 that will power next year’s flagships or will it use this year’s top processors? The possibility of using this year’s chipsets is high seeing as the phone is expected to launch before the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

There is a possibility that the Galaxy X may get unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 9 in August next year or during the IFA 2018 that will be held in between Aug. 31 to Sept. 5.

However, the company has set a goal of debuting the highly anticipated foldable smartphone in next year. The launch will only happen after all the pending issues with the smartphone are dealt with. Koh did not reveal any information on the problems that they are facing with it.

Analysts have revealed that it will take some time to mass produce a foldable phone with thin design and topnotch features. Since the time company showcased a flexible display prototype named Youm in 2013, tech enthusiasts are eagerly to hear more information on the first foldable phone from Samsung. In the past two or three years, the rumor mill have claimed that the South Korean firm will be showcasing its foldable phone soon.

In February this year, Samsung had trademarked the Galaxy X moniker. Speculations have it that the Galaxy X could be the upcoming foldable smartphone from Samsung. Some rumors have revealed that the South Korean company is testing a foldable phone that features two AMOLED screens that are connected with each other by means of a hinge with a fold-out mechanism. The Galaxy X’s fold-out mechanism may possibly allow users to use it like a tablet by unfolding it. In July this year, the Galaxy X phone had received Bluetooth SIG certification which indicates that the launch of the Galaxy X is getting close.

Since Samsung is now pegged to introduce the Galaxy X foldable phone under Note branding, the phablet is likely to debut in the second half of 2018.

Bixby AI Speaker

DJ Koh has also revealed that Samsung is working Harman to build a speaker system enabled with Bixby artificial intelligence. User can speak to the speaker to play music or carry some tasks. Leading brands like Amazon and Google have already launched voice-assistant enabled speakers in the market. Apple’s HomePod is also expected to hit the market by the end of this year. However, there is no confirmation on when Samsung will be unveiling the voice-controlled speaker.

Galaxy Note 8 Market Response

As far as Galaxy Note 8’s market response is concerned, Koh states that even though it is an expensive Note series phone, the demand for the phablet has been phenomenal during its pre-orders. By Friday, 650,000 units of Galaxy Note 8 have been pre-ordered.

Previous rumors have revealed that the highly anticipated foldable smartphone from Samsung will be launching as Galaxy X. It seems that the arrival of the Galaxy X is getting closer as it has allegedly received Bluetooth SIG certification.

Earlier in this year, Samsung had trademarked the Galaxy X moniker at Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information (KIPRIS). The Bluetooth SIG certification has been granted to a Samsung mobile phone that has a model number of SM-G888N0. However, the Galaxy X moniker was certified, it was speculated that its model number is SM-9000.

The Bluetooth SIG certification has revealed that the SM-G888N0 has Bluetooth 4.2 onboard. This model number is not similar to any of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Interestingly, the SM-GN888N0 was also certified by Wi-Fi Alliance some time ago. It had revealed that the device was running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS. At that time, the SM-G888N0 was also speculated as the Galaxy S8 Sport (or Galaxy S8 Active).

The Galaxy X is rumored to be a flagship device and since the Galaxy S8 duo has Bluetooth 5.0 and Android 7.0 Nougat onboard, it is likely that the Galaxy X would be launching with upgraded specs. Rumors have revealed that the upcoming foldable smartphones will be available in two variants such as Galaxy X and Galaxy X1. The foldable smartphone project is said to be codenamed as Project Valley.

Some rumors had claimed that Samsung would be showcasing the Galaxy X foldable phone by the end of this year or in the starting quarter of 2018. However, the information that had surfaced in January suggested that it would be arriving later in the next year. The Galaxy X foldable smartphone is rumored to be available in limited quantity of 10,000 units to gauge the response of the market.

The rumor mill had revealed that Samsung had first tested fold-in mechanism for the alleged Galaxy X, but this idea has been reportedly cancelled as it would be convenient for the users to unfold it every time to use it. Hence, the South Korean company is rumored to use fold-in mechanism for the Galaxy X phone.

This reminds of the Lenovo Folio foldable concept tablet that was recently showcased at the Lenovo Tech World event. It has a 5.5-inch screen that grows to a 7.8-inch display when unfolded. Other sources that the purported Galaxy X won’t be a bendable device, but it will be coming with two different panels that will be connected with each other using a hinge.

A new Samsung phone has been spotted on the website of the WiFi Alliance after getting certified. The phone’s model number is listed as SM-G888N0 but we are unsure what device it is.

The model number is similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Sport (SM-G880) which was released last year. For those who don’t know, the Sport series is a separate line aimed at fitness enthusiasts. Unlike the original flagship, the Sport has physical buttons instead of capacitive ones and a bunch of fitness related apps and hardware. It also has a rubberized body. The Galaxy Sport series are usually exclusive to Sprint and are different from the rugged “Active Series”.

Since this new device is almost identical in terms of the model number to the S7 Sport, some say it may be the Galaxy S8 Sport. However, the “N0” at the end signifies it is destined for the Korean market. That singular difference gives rise to a second opinion.

Like I mentioned above, the Sport is a Sprint exclusive device so if this phone is for the Korean market, it is not the Galaxy S8 Sport. Plus the model number for the Galaxy S8 Sport should probably be SM-G890 based on the fact that the Galaxy S5 Sport is SM-G860 and the S7 Sport is SM-G880. There was no Sport version for the Galaxy S6 or it would have had the SM-G870 model number.

So what phone is the SM-G888N0 that makes it limited to Korea? Probably the Galaxy X prototype with two AMOLED displays. Reports say Samsung is working on a sort of flip phone with two AMOLED displays connected by a hinge, allowing it to fold out like a notebook. Only a few thousand units will be produced so it makes sense to limit it’s availability to South Korea.

Samsung is working on testing a prototype phone with dual displays, and according to industry sources production will begin soon. Both OLED screens will be connected in the middle by a hinge and will open and close like a clam-shell phone.

This device is quite different from the Galaxy X which is expected to use a single flexible OLED screen that can be folded in half. Samsung is reported to have placed orders for components to make about 2000 to 3000 units for the dual-screen phone in H1 2017.

This dual screen phone is probably a preliminary phase for the Galaxy X. And data gotten from the tests will be used to develop its foldable phone which Samsung plans to release in limited quantities in H2 2017. Since both the dual screen phone and the Galaxy X will be manufactured in limited quantities, they will only be available to a select few.

Samsung has come a long way with its flexible displays. The Galaxy Round was the first smartphone to feature a curved display. It was released in October 2013, a month ahead of LG’s G Flex which also featured a curved display and a self-healing back. But while Samsung has continued with releasing phones with curved displays, LG stopped after the G Flex 2.

Since a couple of months, more information has been surfacing on Samsung’s alleged foldable smartphone – the Galaxy X. The device is said to be codenamed as Project Valley that has been in works since over a year. The Seoul-based tech giant has trademarked the ‘Galaxy X’ moniker indicating that its release is drawing near.

The trademark was filed at KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) Previous rumors have stated that Samsung is working on two variants of its Galaxy X foldable smartphone. Both the rumored variants are Galaxy X1 with model number SM-X9000 and Galaxy X1+ with model number SM-X9050.

Speculations have suggested that the Galaxy X1 would be coming with a 5-inch foldable screen supporting 4K resolution and its fold-out mechanism would allow users it use it as a 7-inch tablet. It is pegged to be equipped with biometric sensors for fingers, face, iris and palm.

Rumors have revealed that the company had previously tested fold-in mechanism for Galaxy X, but now the foldable phone would be coming with outwards folding mechanism. The probable reason why it may have axed ditched the fold-in design is that it could be an inconvenience to the users to unfold it each time they wanted to see notifications.

The fold-out design for Galaxy X puts the screen on the outer side. This technique possibly allows the company with more options to display information on both the sides of the Galaxy X when folded

In the previous month, a leakster had revealed the company would be officially announcing its first foldable smartphone in the third or fourth quarter of this year. However, other sources suggest that the Galaxy X1 and X1+ would be releasing in 2018.

At the beginning, Samsung is reportedly aiming to release only 100,000 units of Galaxy X in a bid to gauge the market response. Rumors suggest that the South Korean company may have showcased in secret to investors at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017. Since Samsung has trademarked “Galaxy X” name, it is likely that its arrival of its first foldable phone is close at hand.

Many noted personalities have said that the smartphone industry has come to a saturation point when it comes down to innovation. That’s true to a large extent given that the most smartphones these days feature just incremental upgrades rather than something outright revolutionary. The Xiaomi Mi Mix was probably one of the most innovative smartphone products released in 2016, but even that was an incremental upgrade, achieved by reducing the bezels on the screen to a major extent — something that many companies have been trying for the past couple of years.

It is at this time that we hear about the foldable display smartphone concept from Samsung. And according to the latest reports, foldable smartphones may no longer exist as just a concept as Samsung as well as LG are said to be releasing such smartphones as early as Q3-Q4 2017. Initially, it was said that Samsung is developing a tablet-like device with a display that folds into a smartphone. But the company seems to have realized recently that folding-in smartphones are probably not the ideal way to go (since you’ll have to fold the display every time you want to use it as a phone). So, the company is now said to be working on foldable display smartphones that essentially fold outwards. So, it starts off as a smartphone and whenever required, you can open it up to convert it into a large 7-inch tablet. Pretty nifty, right?

Now, we have some pretty good looking concept renders of this foldable display smartphone. While we are not sure whether the final product from Samsung will end up looking anything close to this, it does give us a glimpse of how a smartphone which can enlarge itself into a 7-inch tablet could materialize in real life. While a foldable smartphone sounds like an amazing concept, brining it to real life comes with its own set of technical challenges. We have seen flexible displays but a foldable smartphone requires much more than that. We will have to wait and see how Samsung tackles the rigid parts that are inside a smartphone like the circuit board. The specs on such a phone have to be top-notch and hence, it’ll be interesting to see how the company designs its first foldable display phone. Given that the company is said to roll out more than “100,000″ foldable devices in Q3 2017, it means that Samsung has already overcome these challenges.

With LG also reported to make a similar number of foldable devies by the fourth quarter, 2017 is definitely going to be an interesting year for smartphone enthusiasts.
