The official unleashing might happen at the Samsung’s Developer Conference slated for November 11. In a recent tweet on the official handle, Samsung has published a video teasing Samsung Developer’s Conference depicting a two lines unfolding to become right-facing arrow and then converging into a single vertical line. It directly shows the nature of a foldable device which can be folded into these shapes.

We might be wrong, but most probably it looks like a teaser for both the foldable smartphone and the Samsung’s Developer Conference. The animation resembles the unfolding of a foldable design. Even if we check the slogan of this years’ SDC, then “the crossroads between the present and the future” can directly be matched with a foldable device.

The crossroads between the present and the future – Samsung Developer Conference is where you’ll meet the knowledge needed to stay on tech’s cutting edge. #SDC18
Learn more: https://t.co/t66edOWIUi pic.twitter.com/bDZHuZVWee

Well, it is not for the first time that we are getting these kinds of teasers. Even, DJ Koh, some time ago said in an interview that the device is coming by the end of this year.

Those who are waiting for the Samsung foldable device, get ready for a burn-in pocket as it will be heftily priced. As per the recent report, its believed to be available for the price of $1800 (12000 Yuan, ₩2,000,000, £1,375). Samsung has delayed the foldable device launch various times to make it useful along with the flexible design aspect. Similarly, LG and Huawei are also developing a foldable device which will be useful rather than just being foldable.

So, if everything goes well, we are inevitably going to get the glimpse of the Galaxy X foldable smartphone at the SDC conference next month. Until then, you can have a look at the concept video from 2014, where you can imagine the scenario of having a flexible device in the real world.

Till now, it was believed that the upcoming Samsung foldable smartphone will be called Galaxy X but that might not be the case.

A tweet from Chinese tipster suggests that the phone could be the part of Samsung’s upcoming Galaxy F series. The Samsung’s Galaxy F series is said to be “super” high-end, which fits the price range for the upcoming foldable smartphone. According to the previous reports, the Samsung’s foldable smartphone will be priced somewhere between $1500 and $2000.

The foldable smartphone from Samsung is said to be the most premium mobile phone from the company, above the Galaxy S-series and Galaxy Note series, which justifies the super high-end tag for the Galaxy F-series. But since there’s no evidence, take this information with a pinch of salt.

Also, there are reports that the company is also working on Galaxy R and Galaxy P series for the Chinese market and there’s a possibility that the Galaxy F is an extension of that and could be a China-exclusive smartphone lineup. The Galaxy R and Galaxy P series are for the low-range and mid-range offerings in China from the South Korean firm.

Samsung is currently gearing up to launch its next flagship smartphone — Galaxy Note 9, which is scheduled to get announced on 9th August in New York. The phone’s specs, feature, and pricing information have already been leaked online.

Read More: Following the steps of Razer, Xiaomi, and Asus, Samsung could soon launch a gaming smartphone

While the Galaxy Note 9 launch is yet to take place, reports about the company’s next year’s flagship smartphone — Galaxy S10 are already surfacing. Recently, it was reported that the phone will have an ultrasonic fingerprint sensor embedded under the display. It is expected to get launched at MWC 2019.

Before now, rumor has it that the device would be named “Galaxy X” as most top-notch devices use the letter X letter. However, this may not be the case with this Samsung device, as a recent tweet by a Twitter tipster who is an insider indicates that the device wouldn’t be named Galaxy X. The tipster didn’t share the name the smartphone would be called, so, at this point in time, it is unclear the name the South Korean company would choose for the smartphone. It is now speculated that the Galaxy X branding might be used on the Samsung gaming smartphone lineup, which Samsung is already working on.

If this is the first time you bumping into the device, Samsung’s new foldable smartphone would adopt a display that can be folded vertically and this is unlike the early prototypes. The device would be just like a normal smartphone and operated normally if laid out flat but if folded, the top and bottom portions of the panel can be operated separately. However, a second hidden display would pop up if the device is completely folded which would allow the users to glance at notifications, weather forecast, and some other information.

However, a reliable tipster who holds a consistent track record on leaking accurate information of upcoming Samsung devices has claimed that the company has swapped the launch venues of these devices.

According to the tipster, Samsung’s first foldable smartphone will be made official at the CES 2019 event. A January announcement for the smartphone could mean that it could be made available for buying in February. Previous reports have revealed that the alleged Galaxy X foldable phone will be a limited-edition device as the company is expected to manufacture only 300,000 to 500,000 units. Rumors have it that the first foldable phone from Samsung may cost around $1,850.

Since the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ have encountered lackluster sales, it was previously speculated that the company may consider launching the Galaxy S10 series in January. Samsung has been using the MWC platform to announce its Galaxy S series of smartphones. Going by the fresh information shared by the Chinese tipster, it seems that the Galaxy S10 and S10+ may go official at MWC 2019. Rumors have it that a smaller Galaxy S flagship phone may also debut alongside the Galaxy S10 duo.

Samsung is yet to comment on the Galaxy S10 and S10 Plus as it is currently focused on the Galaxy Note 9 that is slated to go official on Aug. 9. However, rumors surrounding the upcoming Galaxy S10 and Galaxy S10 Plus claim that these flagship phones may get unveiled in January 2019. It is speculated that the South Korean company wants to debut its first foldable phone at MWC 2019. Fresh information reveals that the foldable phone that can also double up as a tablet will be carrying a very expensive pricing of ~$1,850.

It is speculated that the Samsung will be receiving components for building its first foldable phone in November this year. The assembling process of the smartphone is likely to begin later in the same month or early December as the company is reportedly aiming to make the smartphone available for buying in February next year.

Even though Samsung’s foldable smartphone is pegged to debut in February, it is also being said that the company may delay its launch if the phone does not deliver optimal user experience. It is likely that before unleashing the smartphone to general audience at MWC 2019, the South Korean tech giant may showcase it first to its carrier partners and select clients through a private conference at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 event in January.

The foldable phone from Samsung is expected to house a massive 7.3-inch display. When folded, it will shrink to 4.5-inch screen. It is likely to borrow some specs from the Galaxy S10. The company may produce the smartphone in limited numbers at the beginning. It may manufacture 300,000 to 500,000 units of the device through its initial production.

Rumors are rife that Samsung’s foldable device will be hitting the market with “Galaxy X”, but there is no official confirmation on it yet. There is a possibility that the company may unveil it as a new series.

Initially, Samsung’s first foldable device could be marketed a concept device. If the device manages to salvage positive reception, the company may launch a more mainstream foldable phone that may get unleashed alongside the Galaxy Note 10 that may debut in the third quarter of 2019.

Earlier this year, Samsung CEO DJ Koh had claimed that the company will not be hurrying to launch the highly anticipated foldable phone. He had added that it will be made official only when it is completely ready. Fresh information shared by a South Korean publication states that Samsung may debut its first foldable phone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 tech trade show in February next. As far as the Galaxy S10 is concerned, Samsung is likely to debut it in January next year.

The Bell has learned from its sources that Samsung is scheduled to receive components for the foldable phone starting from November this year. Also, it claims that the company has changed the codename of the foldable phone from Valley to Winner. The report states that since the development phase of the phone is getting over and it is nearing the release, the company has decided to change its codename. As mentioned above, the South Korean company is reportedly aiming to launch it at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2019 in February next year.

Samsung’s foldable phone is expected to feature fold-in design that will include a total of three OLED panels. Each panel is speculated to be sized around 3.5 inches. When opened, the device will provide its users with a 7-inch screen space to use it like tablet.

Since the company had used the MWC 2018 platform to debut the Galaxy S9, initial rumors have claimed that the Galaxy S10 – the 10th anniversary Galaxy S series smartphones may get official at MWC 2019. However, since new information has claimed that the firm may debut its foldable smartphone at the same venue, it is now being speculated that the Galaxy S10 may get an early launch next year. It is likely that the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2019 that will take place in Las Vegas in January next year could be the platform the company may use to announce the Galaxy S10.

To ensure that the Galaxy S10 gets official in January 2019, Samsung is reportedly aiming to receive its components by October this year. The South Korean firm has never used the CES platform to announce its flagship phones but has only used it showcase consumer electronics devices like TVs, refrigerators and so on. Hence, it is advisable to take this report with a pinch of salt.

The smartphone, which was rumored to launch soon, is now reportedly not going to launch anytime soon.

Salman Saeed, who’s the product manager of display technology at Qualcomm said in an interview that “we might not see the phone arrive as soon as recent rumors have teased.” He adds that it might be years until something along the lines of the foldable phone similar to the leaked Samsung patents becomes a reality.

The issue behind the delay is said to be related to the fine-tuning of the user experience as well as the durability. Saeed points to the transistors in the display architecture as being the weakest link and says that the components responsible for powering individual pixels “are not flexible enough today” to withstand frequent bending.

Salman Saeed further says that “they [phone manufacturers] haven’t really cracked the material science right now to produce electrodes that can repeatedly withstand bending and folding.”

Last year, in September, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh had confirmed in an interview that the company would launch its first foldable smartphone in 2018. Later, there were reports suggesting that the Galaxy X could be a limited edition device that may only arrive in select markets. The Samsung Galaxy X has reportedly received certification from Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG, and NRRA, which suggested that the phone could soon get launched.

The South Korean giant outed the technology years ago through a demo at Consumer Electronics Show (CES), but it seems that little has happened after that. While rumors and comments from Samsung executives have pointed to phone’s launch nearing, the device has failed to materialize so far.

Apart from Samsung, other smartphone OEMs, including Apple and LG are also speculated to be working on a foldable smartphone. However, Samsung could be the first company to debut a foldable phone.

Meanwhile, Samsung is preparing to launch its next flagship smartphone — Galaxy Note 9. Contrary to previous reports, a fresh report from a South Korean publication states that the Note 9 will adopt the in-display fingerprint scanning technology.

During an interview at MWC 2018, DJ Koh who is the leading mobile business at Samsung said that the firm will concentrate on launching meaningful products, instead of being industry first in everything. Hence, it is speculated that the company may not hurry in launching the world’s first foldable smartphone. Recent reports have claimed that it may be launch in 2019. However, it is now speculated that its launch could be delayed further.

Koh said that the company had developed phones earlier than Chinese smartphone firms. However, it had been obsessed at launching devices with industry first technology, rather than whether the innovation will be meaningful for the end user. Koh added that launching industry first technology is not important today. Hence, the company will focus more on launching something that will be meaningful and valuable to the consumers.

During the launch event of Galaxy Note 8, the company had claimed that it would be launching a foldable smartphone in 2018. However, he confirmed that instead of foldable phone, the company would be debuting AI-based smart speaker in the second of the year.

Talking on the company’s plans for hardware innovation like foldable phone, Koh said that it would be launching such phones when it is fully ready. While speaking on the arrival of its Al speaker, Koh again stated that it will be launched when it is ready to deliver topnotch quality as it will be entering smart speaker market as a new brand.

According to Koh, the smart speaker will not only be a standalone music device, but a hub of IoT (Internet of Things) services that may possibly allow users to control it by talking to a TV or a fridge.

As far as the launch of the Galaxy S10 is concerned, Koh revealed that company may stop the existing numeric naming scheme for its next-generation Galaxy flagship phone arriving at the beginning months of 2019.

It was revealed that the company may launch it at the end of the year or early 2019. Yesterday, during the launch event of the Galaxy S9 and S9+, Samsung mobile business CEO DJ Koh gave out some information on the highly awaited foldable phone to CNET.

In an interview with CNET, Koh said that Samsung’s first foldable phone is not a gimmick as the company is aiming to deliver best user experience through it. He also hinted that it will be arriving as a new category but refrained from revealing any information on the specs of the phone. He claimed that he will reveal more details on it when the time arrives to show off the device.

When he was specifically asked whether the foldable phone would be launched this year. He responded by saying, “Sometimes I do not listen. My ear is not so good.” Rumors have it that the alleged Galaxy X phone featuring 7.3-inch foldable display would enter production phase by November this year. Hence, the handset may get unveiled at the beginning of next year. The foldable phone is expected to arrive with in-fold design.

Koh confirmed that a Bixby voice assistant powered smart speaker will be launching later this year. He had previously confirmed that it would be arriving in the second half of 2018. Again, he did not reveal any information on the Bixby smart speaker.

Months ago, a device dubbed SM-G888N0 appeared in the database of South Korea’s National Radio Research Agency, hinting at a possible launch of the foldable phone in South Korea.

This codename has been spotted even at the Bluetooth SIG and it was expected to receive its official certification. That is why many people thought that a foldable phone was going to be released in 2018 by Samsung under the name of Galaxy X. But now it has been revealed that SM-G888N0 is not the codename which identifies Samsung’s foldable phone. According to the colleagues from Sammobile, SM-G888N0 is just a rugged phone which has been realized by Samsung for train personnel in South Korea.

The company is given the task to create the world’s first LTE-R network for trains in South Korea, and this device is part of this project. According to previous rumors, Samsung Galaxy X will be released in 2018 and an alleged patent has already surfaced. But we are not talking about SM-G888N0, and at this point, we can say that there is no official certification that proves its existence.

Apart from Samsung, other smartphone OEMS like Apple and LG are also speculated to be working foldable smartphones. However, Samsung could be the first company to debut a foldable phone.

In September, Samsung’s mobile chief DJ Koh had confirmed through an interview that the company would be its first foldable smartphone in 2018. Recent reports have suggested that it could be a limited edition device that may be arrive in select markets. Its arrival seems to be close at hand as it has already received certification from Wi-Fi Alliance, Bluetooth SIG and NRRA.

Industry insiders have revealed that Samsung Display has successfully managed to build a foldable screen with a curvature of 1.0R. What does it mean? Well, it means that users will be able to fold it inward like a paper. It may not be a glass panel as it is speculated to be made of up plastic materials. Rumors have revealed that the Galaxy X may come with a fold-in design. Samsung has filed numerous patents for foldable phones in the recent past, we will have to wait and see what sort of design and features will be arriving on the Galaxy X.

Another reason why Samsung is working hard on launching the Galaxy X in 2018 is that it reportedly wants to prevent LG from a striking a deal with Apple for launching its first foldable phone. The Cupertino-based firm has recently filed a patent for foldable iPhone in the U.S. Recent rumors have suggested that LG Display will be supplying its foldable display panels for the foldable iPhone that may debut in 2020.

LG Display is expected to be ready with a foldable screen with a curvature of 1.0R in 2019. However, in the next year it is expected to launch its foldable screen with a curvature of 2.5R. According to display industry, a foldable smartphone will be commercialized in the next few years.

The Galaxy X is not expected to launch until next year but a support page has showed up on the official Samsung Korea site. The page doesn’t include any specs but the fact that it is live is a another confirmation of the phone’s existence.

The Samsung Galaxy SM-G888N0 got Wi-Fi and Bluetooth certified months ago, but we still know next to nothing about its specs. However, the design is expected be the same hinge design like the ZTE Axon M, but with more of a flip-phone form factor than a book.

The core specs like the display size and processor are unknown. Will it be powered by the Snapdragon 845/Exynos 9810 that will power next year’s flagships or will it use this year’s top processors? The possibility of using this year’s chipsets is high seeing as the phone is expected to launch before the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+.

The Galaxy X will be launched in Samsung’s home country first as it has already been certified there. Samsung may then decide to release it in other countries depending on the reception it gets.

These certifications have revealed that the Galaxy X has a model number of SM-G888N0. Fresh information suggest that it could be a limited phone as the South Korean company is speculated to manufacture only 10,000 units.

If the Galaxy X is a limited edition, it may not receive a worldwide release and may be only made available in the home country of South Korea. In 2014, the Galaxy Note Edge that features a single edge curved display was only launched in South Korea and India. Hence, the first Galaxy X could be a test device because of which it may be available in limited edition in South Korea. There is a possibility it may receive a global launch in 2019.

Interestingly, Samsung has confirmed in the previous month that if it is able to overcome the technical glitches, it may launch a foldable Galaxy Note in 2018. However, there is no confirmation that this smartphone will launch as Galaxy X.

According to Forbes, Samsung may showcase the Galaxy X foldable phone at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) that will be held between Jan. 9 to Jan. 12 in January 2018. The company is unlikely to launch the Galaxy X at Mobile World Congress (MWC) that is usually held in February. The reason behind it is that Samsung is known for launching its new S-series flagship just before MWC.

Next year’s MWC 2018 will be held between Feb. 26 and March 1. Hence, the South Korean company is expected to debut the Galaxy S9 and Galaxy S9+ on Feb. 25. There is a possibility that the Galaxy X may get unveiled alongside the Galaxy Note 9 in August next year or during the IFA 2018 that will be held in between Aug. 31 to Sept. 5.

The Galaxy X is expected to arrive with flagship specification and it goes without saying that its foldable design will be its USP. The South Korean company will not want the Galaxy X to cannibalize the sales of its next generation Galaxy S and Galaxy Note series smartphones.

DJ Koh who heads the mobile division of Samsung has confirmed recently confirmed that it would be debuting a foldable smartphone next year. The arrival of the smartphone could to be inching closer as it seems that it has been certified by National Radio Research Agency (NRRA) in South Korea.

A Samsung phone with model number of SM-G888N0 has been NRRA. The same model had received Bluetooth SIG certification at the end of July. The handset has also been certified by Wi-Fi Alliance. Since the model number does not correspond to any of the smartphone that Samsung has released so far, it seems that the mysterious handset could either be a new line of smartphone from the company or the heavily rumored foldable phone.

There is no information available on the specifications of the smartphone and the South Korean company has not released any details on it. Previous rumors have revealed that the Galaxy X is a foldable smartphone that is codenamed as Project Valley.

DJ Koh has already confirmed during a recent interview Samsung is aiming to release a foldable Galaxy Note phone in 2018. There is no confirmation on whether this device will be launching as Galaxy X. Koh has said that it will be launched only if the company is able to successfully resolve its technical problems. He has also claimed that if the problems do not get resolved, the arrival of the foldable phone may get delayed.

The rumor mill has revealed that Samsung’s foldable phone is fitted with two AMOLED displays that are connected using a hinge with fold-out mechanism. It indicates that by unfolding the phone, users will be able to use it like a tablet.

Samsung had showcased a prototype of a smartphone with foldable display called Youm in 2013. It seems that the first ever foldable phone will finally arrive next year. Speculations are rife that the South Korean company may launch it in limited quantities and it may carry an expensive price tag of around $1,200.

The full screen display made available as Infinity Display on Galaxy S8, Galaxy S8+ and Galaxy Note 8 has been well-received by audience. The arrival of Samsung’s foldable phone suggests that the company would soon begin the trend of launching flexible smartphones.

According to Koh, there are some obstacles that Samsung needs to resolve in order to release its foldable smartphone. However, the company has set a goal of debuting the highly anticipated foldable smartphone in next year. The launch will only happen after all the pending issues with the smartphone are dealt with.
In February this year, Samsung had trademarked the Galaxy X moniker. Speculations have it that the Galaxy X could be the upcoming foldable smartphone from Samsung. Some rumors have revealed that the South Korean company is testing a foldable phone that features two AMOLED screens that are connected with each other by means of a hinge with a fold-out mechanism. The Galaxy X’s fold-out mechanism may possibly allow users to use it like a tablet by unfolding it. In July this year, the Galaxy X phone had received Bluetooth SIG certification which indicates that the launch of the Galaxy X is getting close.

Since Samsung is now pegged to introduce the Galaxy X foldable phone under Note branding, the phablet is likely to debut in the second half of 2018.

Bixby AI Speaker

DJ Koh has also revealed that Samsung is working Harman to build a speaker system enabled with Bixby artificial intelligence. User can speak to the speaker to play music or carry some tasks. Leading brands like Amazon and Google have already launched voice-assistant enabled speakers in the market. Apple’s HomePod is also expected to hit the market by the end of this year. However, there is no confirmation on when Samsung will be unveiling the voice-controlled speaker.

Galaxy Note 8 Market Response

As far as Galaxy Note 8’s market response is concerned, Koh states that even though it is an expensive Note series phone, the demand for the phablet has been phenomenal during its pre-orders. By Friday, 650,000 units of Galaxy Note 8 have been pre-ordered.

It seems that the arrival of the Galaxy X is getting closer as it has allegedly received Bluetooth SIG certification.

Earlier in this year, Samsung had trademarked the Galaxy X moniker at Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information (KIPRIS). The Bluetooth SIG certification has been granted to a Samsung mobile phone that has a model number of SM-G888N0. However, the Galaxy X moniker was certified, it was speculated that its model number is SM-9000.

Read More: Samsung Galaxy Note 8 to Deliver Best Multimedia Experience

The Bluetooth SIG certification has revealed that the SM-G888N0 has Bluetooth 4.2 onboard. This model number is not similar to any of the Samsung Galaxy smartphones. Interestingly, the SM-GN888N0 was also certified by Wi-Fi Alliance some time ago. It had revealed that the device was running on Android 6.0.1 Marshmallow OS. At that time, the SM-G888N0 was also speculated as the Galaxy S8 Sport (or Galaxy S8 Active).

The Galaxy X is rumored to be a flagship device and since the Galaxy S8 duo has Bluetooth 5.0 and Android 7.0 Nougat onboard, it is likely that the Galaxy X would be launching with upgraded specs. Rumors have revealed that the upcoming foldable smartphones will be available in two variants such as Galaxy X and Galaxy X1. The foldable smartphone project is said to be codenamed as Project Valley.

Some rumors had claimed that Samsung would be showcasing the Galaxy X foldable phone by the end of this year or in the starting quarter of 2018. However, the information that had surfaced in January suggested that it would be arriving later in the next year. The Galaxy X foldable smartphone is rumored to be available in limited quantity of 10,000 units to gauge the response of the market.

The rumor mill had revealed that Samsung had first tested fold-in mechanism for the alleged Galaxy X, but this idea has been reportedly cancelled as it would be convenient for the users to unfold it every time to use it. Hence, the South Korean company is rumored to use fold-in mechanism for the Galaxy X phone.

This reminds of the Lenovo Folio foldable concept tablet that was recently showcased at the Lenovo Tech World event. It has a 5.5-inch screen that grows to a 7.8-inch display when unfolded. Other sources that the purported Galaxy X won’t be a bendable device, but it will be coming with two different panels that will be connected with each other using a hinge.

The phone’s model number is listed as SM-G888N0 but we are unsure what device it is.

The model number is similar to that of the Samsung Galaxy S7 Sport (SM-G880) which was released last year. For those who don’t know, the Sport series is a separate line aimed at fitness enthusiasts. Unlike the original flagship, the Sport has physical buttons instead of capacitive ones and a bunch of fitness related apps and hardware. It also has a rubberized body. The Galaxy Sport series are usually exclusive to Sprint and are different from the rugged “Active Series”.

Since this new device is almost identical in terms of the model number to the S7 Sport, some say it may be the Galaxy S8 Sport. However, the “N0” at the end signifies it is destined for the Korean market. That singular difference gives rise to a second opinion.

Like I mentioned above, the Sport is a Sprint exclusive device so if this phone is for the Korean market, it is not the Galaxy S8 Sport. Plus the model number for the Galaxy S8 Sport should probably be SM-G890 based on the fact that the Galaxy S5 Sport is SM-G860 and the S7 Sport is SM-G880. There was no Sport version for the Galaxy S6 or it would have had the SM-G870 model number.

READ MORE: Samsung Increases Production of Galaxy S8+ Following Positive Reports From Retailers

So what phone is the SM-G888N0 that makes it limited to Korea? Probably the Galaxy X prototype with two AMOLED displays. Reports say Samsung is working on a sort of flip phone with two AMOLED displays connected by a hinge, allowing it to fold out like a notebook. Only a few thousand units will be produced so it makes sense to limit it’s availability to South Korea.

Both OLED screens will be connected in the middle by a hinge and will open and close like a clam-shell phone.

This device is quite different from the Galaxy X which is expected to use a single flexible OLED screen that can be folded in half. Samsung is reported to have placed orders for components to make about 2000 to 3000 units for the dual-screen phone in H1 2017.

This dual screen phone is probably a preliminary phase for the Galaxy X. And data gotten from the tests will be used to develop its foldable phone which Samsung plans to release in limited quantities in H2 2017. Since both the dual screen phone and the Galaxy X will be manufactured in limited quantities, they will only be available to a select few.

Samsung has come a long way with its flexible displays. The Galaxy Round was the first smartphone to feature a curved display. It was released in October 2013, a month ahead of LG’s G Flex which also featured a curved display and a self-healing back. But while Samsung has continued with releasing phones with curved displays, LG stopped after the G Flex 2.

The device is said to be codenamed as Project Valley that has been in works since over a year. The Seoul-based tech giant has trademarked the ‘Galaxy X’ moniker indicating that its release is drawing near.

The trademark was filed at KIPRIS (Korea Intellectual Property Rights Information Service) Previous rumors have stated that Samsung is working on two variants of its Galaxy X foldable smartphone. Both the rumored variants are Galaxy X1 with model number SM-X9000 and Galaxy X1+ with model number SM-X9050.

Speculations have suggested that the Galaxy X1 would be coming with a 5-inch foldable screen supporting 4K resolution and its fold-out mechanism would allow users it use it as a 7-inch tablet. It is pegged to be equipped with biometric sensors for fingers, face, iris and palm.

Rumors have revealed that the company had previously tested fold-in mechanism for Galaxy X, but now the foldable phone would be coming with outwards folding mechanism. The probable reason why it may have axed ditched the fold-in design is that it could be an inconvenience to the users to unfold it each time they wanted to see notifications.

The fold-out design for Galaxy X puts the screen on the outer side. This technique possibly allows the company with more options to display information on both the sides of the Galaxy X when folded

In the previous month, a leakster had revealed the company would be officially announcing its first foldable smartphone in the third or fourth quarter of this year. However, other sources suggest that the Galaxy X1 and X1+ would be releasing in 2018.

At the beginning, Samsung is reportedly aiming to release only 100,000 units of Galaxy X in a bid to gauge the market response. Rumors suggest that the South Korean company may have showcased in secret to investors at the ongoing Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2017. Since Samsung has trademarked “Galaxy X” name, it is likely that its arrival of its first foldable phone is close at hand.

That’s true to a large extent given that the most smartphones these days feature just incremental upgrades rather than something outright revolutionary. The Xiaomi Mi Mix was probably one of the most innovative smartphone products released in 2016, but even that was an incremental upgrade, achieved by reducing the bezels on the screen to a major extent — something that many companies have been trying for the past couple of years.

It is at this time that we hear about the foldable display smartphone concept from Samsung. And according to the latest reports, foldable smartphones may no longer exist as just a concept as Samsung as well as LG are said to be releasing such smartphones as early as Q3-Q4 2017. Initially, it was said that Samsung is developing a tablet-like device with a display that folds into a smartphone. But the company seems to have realized recently that folding-in smartphones are probably not the ideal way to go (since you’ll have to fold the display every time you want to use it as a phone). So, the company is now said to be working on foldable display smartphones that essentially fold outwards. So, it starts off as a smartphone and whenever required, you can open it up to convert it into a large 7-inch tablet. Pretty nifty, right?

Now, we have some pretty good looking concept renders of this foldable display smartphone. While we are not sure whether the final product from Samsung will end up looking anything close to this, it does give us a glimpse of how a smartphone which can enlarge itself into a 7-inch tablet could materialize in real life. Check out all the images below.

While a foldable smartphone sounds like an amazing concept, brining it to real life comes with its own set of technical challenges. We have seen flexible displays but a foldable smartphone requires much more than that. We will have to wait and see how Samsung tackles the rigid parts that are inside a smartphone like the circuit board. The specs on such a phone have to be top-notch and hence, it’ll be interesting to see how the company designs its first foldable display phone. Given that the company is said to roll out more than “100,000″ foldable devices in Q3 2017, it means that Samsung has already overcome these challenges.

With LG also reported to make a similar number of foldable devies by the fourth quarter, 2017 is definitely going to be an interesting year for smartphone enthusiasts.
