Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro hands-on images reveal beauty of Twilight Gold variant

Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro also known as Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition was announced alongside the Mi 8 Lite smartphone yesterday through an unveil event in China. The Mi 8 Pro comes with an in-display fingerprint scanner and it can be availed in three refreshing colors in the home market. The three color editions of the Mi 8 Pro include Transparent version (like the Mi 8 Explorer Edition), Ochre Black and Twilight Gold. Here are some hands-on photos of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro and Mi 8 Lite are the first phones to arrive with gradient color hues. The Twilight Gold edition of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro offers a color changing appearance on its glass rear with pinkish-red at the top and orangish-gold at the bottom. It surely boasts a premium appeal.

The back panel of the phone only features a vertical dual camera setup since the fingerprint scanner is embedded under the 6.26-inch AMOLED screen on the front. The notched display offers an aspect ratio of 18.7:9. Instead of the advanced 3D facial recognition sensors available on the Mi 8 Explorer Edition, the Mi 8 Pro features infrared face unlock technology like the Xiaomi Mi 8. The infrared face unlock makes it possible to unlock the phone in dark environments.

The notch of the Mi 8 Pro houses a 20-megapixel selfie camera, infrared lens with a pixel size of 3micron and infrared illuminator. The vertical dual camera setup features dual 12-megapixel lenses with Sony IMX363 as the primary sensor. The primary lens has a pixel size of 1.4micron, supports dual pixel autofocus and 4-axis OIS.

According to Xiaomi, the current phones with in-display fingerprint scanner waste energy as they repeatedly check whether a finger is present on the screen. Instead of a regular in-screen fingerprint reader, the Mi 8 Pro comes equipped with pressure-sensitive in-display sensor which is activated only when pressure is applied on the display.

The company claimed that this technology is faster than the in-screen fingerprint scanner employed by rivalling companies. The above clip shows how fast the in-display fingerprint scanner of the Mi 8 Pro is.

The Snapdragon 845 chipset is present under the hood of the Xiaomi Mi 8 Pro. It also carries support for dual-band GSP technology that was introduced on the Mi 8 smartphone in May. The 128 GB storage + 6 GB RAM of the Mi 8 Pro is priced at 3,199 Yuan and the higher model with 128 GB storage + 8 GB RAM costs 3,599 Yuan. Xiaomi is currently receiving the pre-orders of both MI 8 Pro models in China. The handset will be available for buying in the home market starting from Sept. 21.

Possible Huawei Mate 20 Pro AI Camera features leak via APK teardown

Huawei is expected to announce the Mate 20 series in October and quite a couple of details about the series have been outed before now. A couple of more details of the Mate 20 Pro have now appeared to confirm Huawei is sure adding a couple of new features to the new models. It’s just that this isn’t the straightforward leak but one scooped by the guys at XDA Developers after an APK teardown of the camera app in a leaked build of EMUI 9. The leaked build was shared last week by FunkyHuawei.club, a service which allows users to update, unbrick, or rebrand Huawei and Honor phones for a fee. While the APK teardown doesn’t definitively show what the app brings in the final run, it predicts features that may arrive in a future update of an application. One of the features which the teardown reveal is AI Zoom. The feature will enable automatic adjustment of the video’s zoom level in order to properly keep the subject centred and in some kind of frame. Analysis of the code shows the mode works with a minimum recording resolution of 1080p. Also, AI Camera must be disabled and beauty mode should be at level 0. AI camera is another feature which the teardown uncovers. The camera powered by Kirin 980 will be capable of recognising objects in real-time. This will enable the camera to be able to apply cinematic video filters such as AI Color, Blur, Filter, Hitchcock and Nostalgia in real-time.Huawei Mate 20

The most attractive feature of all is perhaps the Underwater mode which will allow users to “take clear shots in underwater environments.” The mode isn’t going to allow you use the Mate 20 Pro camera underwater bare body. No, that’s not it. Although the Mate 20 Pro is expected to come with an IP67 rating just like the P20 Pro, there will still be a risk of water damage. But the underwater mode may likely include the use of the phone while in a waterproof plastic bag that Huawei may likely provide. The mode will likely provide the software requires that would result in clear photos being taken in the underwater environment. The mode would also let you shoot a picture with the Volume (-) button and take a video by pressing the Volume (+) button. Also, pressing the power key can turn the camera on or off.

Further, the Mate 20 may also come with a Video Bokeh mode which will allow users to record video with the artificial bokeh that can also be used to take photos. This clue was found in the values VideoBokenSpotShapeSupported and VideoBokehSpotShapeValueSupported. In the state it was found, the feature appears to be incomplete.

How to use OnePlus 6/Huawei P20’s display notch for battery status with Notch Battery Bar App

Nowadays, most of the flagship devices are shipping with the display notches. Since the starting of this year, display notch is appearing as a major feature among the smartphones. There’s no significant use of the notch except for design purpose to carry some important sensors and front camera. Today, we have got another use of it, which is displaying the battery status across the notch. OnePlus 6 and Huawei P20‘s display notch can be used to show the battery status using the new Notch Battery bar app.

display notch battery status

Notch Battery bar app is currently compatible with OnePlus 6 and Huawei P20. It works by adding a live wallpaper on your home screen. Battery bar appears exactly as the size of the notch on both the devices.  It is available for free, but there’s a paid version also, available at the price of $0.99 from the Play Store. It is bringing the useless display notch to some use by adding a battery status bar across the notch.

Steps to use Notch Battery bar app

  1. Install the app from the Play Store
  2. Open the app and preview the wallpaper.
  3. If everything’s perfect, then click “Set Wallpaper” on your device.
  4. Select the option where (home screen or lock screen) you want to apply.
  5. Now, the battery status will show around your notch.

Users, who want to change the wallpaper, can buy the premium version, where there’s an option to change it.

Notch Battery Bar app will show the bright green color when your device is fully charged, and it will fade to light green upon some usage. Later, it will turn to yellow-brown and then red when your battery is at a critical level.

It is quite a useful app for the display notch devices, and we expect similar apps from the manufacturers also.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) with triple rear cameras officially launched

After a lot of leaks and speculations, Samsung has now officially launched its new Galaxy A7 smartphone for the year. The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) is the first smartphone from the South Korean giant to feature triple camera sensors at the back. While the company refers to the phone as Galaxy A7, we expect the retail package to have Galaxy A7 (2018) branding.

The phone hints at Samsung’s new strategy for the mid-range smartphones, in which the company is now introducing features that are even not available on its flagship phones. It seems like a good way to stand out in the crowded market.

Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018)

The new Samsung Galaxy A7 features a 6-inch Full HD+ Super AMOLED Infinity Display with 2220 x 1080 pixels screen resolution. Under the hood, the device is powered by an unspecified octa-core processor clocked at 2.2GHz.

It will be available in three memory configurations — 4GB of RAM with 64GB of internal storage, 4GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage, and 6GB of RAM with 128GB of internal storage. All three models come with a microSD Slot, enabling users to further expand the storage capacity up to 512GB.

The major attraction for the phone is its triple camera setup on the back, placed in the top-left corner. It consists of a 24MP primary lens with f/1.7 aperture, an 8MP ultra-wide f/2.4 lens for wide-angle photos, and a 5MP f/2.2 depth sensor.

On the front side, there’s a 24MP selfie shooter with f/2.0 aperture and an adjustable LED flash. The camera comes with Samsung’s intelligent Scene Optimizer that categorizes the subject and adjusts the color, contrast, and brightness to optimize image quality.

Connectivity options on the device include 4G LTE Cat.6, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac, Bluetooth v5.0 (LE up to 2Mbps), NFC is some regions, GPS/GLONASS, and a micro USB port. It also comes with Dolby Atmos for headphones and Bluetooth audio, Samsung Pay, and Bixby.

There’s also a side-mounted fingerprint sensor, similar to what we saw on the recently announced Galaxy J6+. The phone runs Android 8.0 Oreo operating system out-of-the-box with the company’s own Samsung Experience custom interface on top. The device drives power from a 3,300mAh battery.

The Samsung Galaxy A7 (2018) will be available in select European and Asian markets from this fall. The company also adds that the phone will also be available in additional markets in the near future. Samsung has not yet revealed the phone’s pricing information.

Huawei FreeBuds 2 Pro leaks, battery case can be charged wirelessly by the Mate 20 Pro

When Huawei announced the P20 series earlier this year, it also announced its own wireless earbuds, the Huawei FreeBuds, which look like knock-off Apple AirPods. A new leak has revealed that Huawei is planning a second gen-model called the FreeBuds 2 Pro that will most likely launch alongside the Mate 20 Pro.

Huawei FreeBuds 2 Pro

The images of the FreeBuds 2 Pro show it will even look more like the Apple AirPods than its predecessor. Even the case has been redesigned as the earbuds now sit vertically when inserted. Design aside, the FreeBuds 2 Pro does have some very interesting tricks up its sleeves.

The original FreeBuds’ provided double the AirPods battery life. It lasted 3 hours on a single charge and 10 hours with the charging case. TheFreeBuds 2 Pro will also last 3 hours on a single charge with Hi-Res Wireless Audio but 20 hours with the charging case! That’s double that of the original. That’s not all.

The case will also support wireless charging alongside USB charging. A promotional image shows the FreeBuds 2 Pro charging wirelessly via its case. What if you don’t have a wireless charger? Simply place the case on your Mate 20 Pro and it will begin to charge. Neat, right? Charging using a cable will take 2 hours while wireless charging will take 3 hours.

The FreeBuds 2 Pro has been reported to have a “bone sensor” that captures the user’s voice via bone conduction technology. Combined with AI, the headphones will be able to distinguish between the voice of its owner and that of others. This is said to come in handy when using the Google Assistant.

Each earbud of the FreeBuds 2 Pro weighs 4.1 grams, is 43 mm long, and 18.6 mm wide. They have IR sensors that can tell when they are in your ears or have been removed so as to pause playback. They should also have the same or improved touch functions of the original FreeBuds such as double-tapping the left earbud to activate the assistant and double-tapping either earbuds to answer or reject calls.

Our Meizu 16X Hands On Video is up! We are impressed

Meizu just released its new SD710 powered Meizu 16X model in China today. We were lucky enough to get hands on with the device early on and now, we have our first impressions of the device. The phone has all the bells and whistles that you would expect from an upper mid-ranger and this includes a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack. At the same time, the Meizu 16X doesn’t adopt the trending notch design. It has decided to follow its siblings from the 16th series, featuring a symmetric slim bezel design, which personally, I find to be quite beautiful.

One of the biggest highlights of the Meizu 16X is the presence of an in-screen fingerprint sensor. This is a feature that’s usually reserved for the top-end flagships. In fact, until recently, it wasn’t even mainstream on flagship phones, so its really good to see this tech being incorporated in an upper mid-ranger.

If you look at the specs, which includes the same camera setup as the Meizu 16, a SD710 processor with 6GB of RAM, in-screen fingerprint, and a refreshing symmetric design, the Meizu 16X doesn’t really look like a stripped down version of a flagship model. It can clearly stand on its own as a mid-range device. We even played some heavy games in our Meizu 16X hands on and the phone performed flawlessly without overheating. We also note out some differences between the new model and the flagship 16th series in the video.

Overall, our first impressions of the Meizu 16X is quite positive. You can check out our Meizu 16X hands on in the video above. Our review should be up in a few days, so make sure to subscribe to our YouTube channel to stay updated!

Some believe that HMD Global could choose the Samsung route and announce a partnership with a major mobile gaming label to launch a gaming smartphone with an exclusive early access to the game. Samsung did the same thing with the Galaxy Note 9 by partnering with Epic Games for Fortnite.

Currently, no details are available related to the upcoming gaming smartphone. At this point in time, all we know is that Nokia is planning to launch a smartphone dedicated to the mobile gamers.

Meanwhile, it appears that HMD Global is working on a couple of other smartphones as well, including Nokia 9 and Nokia 7.1 Plus. A recent report reveals that the Nokia 7.1 Plus could feature a 5.9-inch Full HD+ display and pack Snapdragon 710 processor.
