Smartisan TNT Workstation Functionality

The TNT workstation doesn’t have its own storage or RAM. So the only way it works is by connecting the display to the Smartisan R1 via a dock or by connecting it to a NUC or PC  using any of the other HDMI ports.

The Workstation comes with a dock for connecting the Smartisan R1. When connected, the OS automatically switches to desktop mode.

Smartisan TNT Workstation Bullet SMS

Smartisan OS 6.66 has been specially made to offer a desktop-like experience. You can decide to use the workstation in touch input mode or by traditional input method (keyboard and mouse). There are custom office programs (TNT Word, TNT PPT, and TNT Excel) with live animation preview, voice input, and command support, text drag and drop, and text style modification.

Smartisan R1 Is Official: The First Smartphone With 1TB of Storage!

Smartisan has taken the wraps off its latest flagship, the Smartisan R1. Not only is it an amazing piece of mobile device, it has also set a world record, one that we may not see any other manufacturer break anytime soon.

Smartisan R1 Pure White

Smartisan R1 Design

Smartisan is one manufacturer that stands out with its design and the R1 doesn’t disappoint. In a world where notches reign supreme, Smartisan has embraced the trend but has decided to follow the path of the Essential PH-1.

The display practically reaches the top with a cut-out for the front-facing camera and a slit for the earpiece. There is a moderately-sized bezel at the bottom which gives the Smartisan R1 an 84% screen-to-body ratio.

The rear of the phone is covered in 3D glass and the grade 7 aluminum frame has that thin line we have come to see on recent Smartisan phones. The fingerprint scanner is buried under the Smartisan logo and the buttons are circular.

Smartisan R1 Carbon Black

Smartisan R1 Specs

Smartisan has packed flagship specs into this device but has also set a record with it. For the first time in the history of mobile phones, we have a device with 1TB of built-in storage! Yes, the Smartisan R1 has 1 terabyte of internal storage and its UFS 2.1. The rest of the specs are also impressive.

It has a 6.17-inch pressure sensitive display with a 2242 x 1080 resolution and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. It is covered with Gorilla Glass 3, has a 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a 96% color gamut (DCI-P3).

There is a Snapdragon 845 processor under the hood clocked at 2.8GHz paired with an Adreno 630 GPU. It comes in four variants:

  1. 6GB RAM + 64GB storage
  2. 6GB RAM + 128GB storage
  3. 8GB RAM + 128GB storage
  4. 8GB RAM + 1TB storage.

The Smartisan R1 has dual rear cameras. The primary sensor is a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with a f/1.8 aperture, 1.4 μm pixel size, 4-axis OIS, and dual PD extreme focus. The second is a 20MP Sony IMX350 with a f/1.75 aperture, 1μm pixel size, and 6P lens.

The front camera is a 24MP sensor with a f/2.0 aperture ArcSoft ray algorithm and AI real-time beauty mode.

Smartisan R1 Camera

The R1 has support for Bluetooth 5.0, dual-band Wi-Fi, NFC+eSE, and has a USB-C port with Display Port 1.4. It also has dual SIM support (nano only) and global LTE band support.

Smartisan R1 supported LTE bands

The Smartisan R1 joins the very short list of devices that support Quick Charge 4+. That means you should be able to refill its 3600mAh battery as fast as possible. It also supports Power Delivery 3.0 and 10W wireless charging. Sadly, it doesn’t have an IP-rating and also ditches the audio jack.

Smartisan Nut R1 Passes Through TENAA, Features A Weird Additional Physical Button On The Side

Smartisan is all set to announce its flagship of this year, the Smartisan Nut R1, at 7.30PM Beijing time today. We will be covering the event in an hour, but before that, the phone seems to have passed through the TENAA certification agency. The company was successful in keeping the phone off the internet all this while, but now that it’s on TENAA, we have got to know a lot about its design.

Smartisan Logo

Smartisan may not be a brand that’s as popular as Xiaomi or Huawei, but it does have a loyal set of fan following in China, thanks to its different approach to smartphones. The company is known to make beautiful designs, and that trend will likely continue with the new R1.

On the front, the phone seems to have a hidden ear piece design, kind of what we saw on the Smartisan Nut 3 earlier this year. What’s interesting is that we can’t spot the camera sensor up front. It could be placed on its chin at the bottom.

[envira-gallery id=”190910″]

Coming to the back, the Smartisan Nut R1 will feature dual cameras and a dual LED flash. There’s a huge Smartisan logo at the back that’s likely to act as a fingerprint sensor too. On the right, you have the standard volume buttons and a power button. But what’s really interesting is the additional button on the left. It’s round and kind of huge as compared to the overall form factor of the phone, which indicates that it’s meant for some specific and important purpose. Maybe it’s a dedicated assistant button, similar to what we saw on the LG G7 with a Google Assistant button. It may also be for some dedicated AI feature, but we can’t be sure of that at the moment.

What we do know is that the Smartisan Nut R1 will feature Snapdragon 845, IMX363 CMOS sensor (one of the sensors from the dual camera setup), and wireless charging.

We don’t have to wait for too long to get all the official details about the new flagship. Event kicks off in about an hour, so make sure to check back on gizmochina for the launch article. It should be an exciting product that you may never get to purchase.

Nubia Z18 Scores High On AnTuTu Thanks To Snapdragon 845 and 8GB of RAM

There are a number of flagship phones launching this month. HTC will announce the HTC U12+ on the 23rd and Xiaomi may also announce the Mi 7 on the same day too. However, there may be another flagship phone coming from China this month and that is the Nubia Z18.

Nubia released the Nubia Z18 Mini last month, so it is not surprising that fans are eager for the arrival of the Nubia Z18 itself. While we wait for a launch date to be announced, the Nubia Z18 has been benchmarked on AnTuTu and the score is insane.

Nubia Z18 AnTuTu

The Nubia Z18 scored 280,085 points on AnTutu. This is higher than the score of the Mi MIX 2s (273,741) and the ASUS Zenfone 5Z (274,499) – both powered by the Snapdragon 845 like the Nubia Z18. The Z18 is also said to come with 8GB of RAM.

Alleged Xiaomi Mi 8’s 3D Facial Recognition Module Appears in Leaked Photo

Earlier today, Xiaomi confirmed that it will be holding a launch event in Shenzhen. However, it did not confirm on the date and time for the event. It is speculated that the Chinese firm will use the Shenzhen platform to announce its new flagship phone. Rumors have it that two smartphones namely, Xiaomi Mi 7 and Xiaomi’s 8th Anniversary Edition smartphone by the end of this month. A leaked photo of the structured 3D light module has appeared on Weibo. At first, it was speculated to be the image of the TrueDepth Camera and Face ID system of the iPhone X. However, a careful look at it reveals that the structured 3D light module is significantly different from what is present on the iPhone X. Moreover, the image also shows a modified version of the MIUI for the notch.

Xiaomi Mi 8 3D Face Recognition
Xiaomi Mi 8 3D Face Recognition

A tipster from China claims that the 8th Anniversary Edition phone from the company will be launching as the Xiaomi Mi 8. He has also added that the leaked image could belong to Mi 8’s 3D facial recognition module.

Previous reports have claimed that the 3D facial recognition solution for Xiaomi’s upcoming flagship phone is being jointly developed by Qualcomm, Himax Technologies and Truly Opto-electronics. It is speculated that the Xiaomi Mi 8 may debut as the first Android phone with support for 3D facial scanning.

The Apple iPhone X that was launched last year is the world’s first phone to support 3D facial recognition. The Face ID feature on the iPhone X allows it to carry out authentication by scanning the face of the user in 3D. The structured light 3D module of the iPhone X includes a TrueDepth Camera that captures the face data accurate by analyzing more than 30,000 invisible dots to make a depth map on the face of the user. At the same time, it also captures an infrared image of the face.

The neural engine of the A11 Bionic SoC springs into action to convert the depth map and infrared image into a mathematical representation which is then matched with registered facial data of the user. The Face ID is so secure that it can be not only used for securely unlocking the iPhone, but also for authenticating payments on it. Apple was so confident about the Face ID that it decided the axe the Touch ID fingerprint scanning feature from iPhone X.

The Xiaomi Mi 8 is expected to offer such kind of robust security through its 3D facial scanning feature. Like the iPhone X, it may not feature a fingerprint scanner. However, Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun had recently hint the Mi 7 will be coming with an under-display fingerprint scanner. Hence, it may so happen that the Mi 7 may not feature 3D face scanning but come with in-screen fingerprint reader.

Galaxy S10 Could be Samsung’s First Phone with Under-Display Fingerprint Sensor

Previous reports have claimed that the Galaxy Note 9 that is expected to launch around August this year will be Samsung’s first phone with in-screen fingerprint reader. However, fresh information coming from South Korea states that instead of Note 9, Samsung will be launching the Galaxy S10 as its phone with the advanced biometric recognition feature.

According to South Korea’s Chosun, Samsung had tried to introduce Fingerprint on Display (FOD) on Galaxy S8 last year. However, since it has been encountering technical difficulties, it is yet to launch a phone with FOD. Meanwhile, Chinese manufacturers such as Vivo and Huawei have already launched phones with FOD. One should be aware of the fact that unlike these Chinese smartphones OEMs that have partnered with third-party FOD suppliers, Samsung is building its own under-display fingerprint scanner.

FOD technology can be categorized into optical, capacitive and ultrasonic technologies. The Chinese smartphone OEMs have used optical FOD sensors from third-party companies like Synaptics and Goodix. The optical FOD sensors works by emitting light to scan the surface of the finger and match it with the stored fingerprint data. This technology is easy to implement but offers poor accuracy.

The under-display fingerprint scanner available on the Vivo X20 Plus UD works slower than the conventional fingerprint reader. The Huawei Mate RS features an under-display fingerprint scanner as well as a rear-mounted fingerprint reader. The probable reason why Huawei added another regular fingerprint scanner on the Mate RS could be that its in-display fingerprint scanner may not 100 percent reliable.

Samsung, Qualcomm and Apple are reportedly developing ultrasonic FOD sensors that can capture the minute details of the surface of the finger using ultrasound. It is highly accurate and durable, but it is expensive to produce. Also, the yield of mass production is low. It also requires much time for improving its accuracy.

Samsung will be not only using the under-display fingerprint scanner on its upcoming flagship smartphones starting from the Galaxy S10, but also it is expected to use it other departments such as home appliances, automobiles and IoT in the near future. Since the South Korean company is reportedly planning to use in-screen fingerprint scanner in multiple products, it could be waiting to implement it only when it is completely ready.

Another Lenovo Z5 Teaser Suggests That it Will Indeed Offer 95 Percent Screen-to-Body Ratio

Lenovo Group VP Chang Cheng had recently shared a sketch of the upcoming Lenovo Z5 flagship phone on his Weibo account. The sketch had revealed that the Z5 will be arriving with a true bezel-less design since it does not feature bezels surrounding the display are almost non-existent. Today, Cheng has shared another teaser on Weibo to show the bottom portion of the phone.

Lenovo Z5 Teaser

In order to provide larger screen space to the users, smartphone OEMs have recently adopted notched design like iPhone X. Some of the phones with notched design feature slightly thick bottom bezel. However, the Lenovo Z5 seems to feature ultra-thin bezels around the screen. The first teaser of the Lenovo Z5 that was released earlier in this month had revealed that it does not feature a notch. Hence, the Z5 is expected to offer a very high screen-to-body ratio of around 95 percent.

The Vivo APEX smartphone that was launched earlier in this year offers the highest screen-to-body ratio ever on a smartphone. In order to offer 91 percent screen space on its 5.99-inch display, Vivo had to achieve technological breakthroughs such as adding a pop-up selfie camera that remains hidden in the top edge of the phone, including an half-screen in-screen fingerprint scanner, and placing the proximity and ambient sensors under its display.

Cheng has previously claimed that the Lenovo Z5’s stunning bezel-less design has been achieved through 4 technological breakthroughs and 18 patented technologies. It appears that the Lenovo Z5 could be featuring pop-up selfie camera, and under-screen sensors and earpiece in order to offer a screen space of 95 percent. Since Cheng has already confirmed that the Lenovo Z5 will be a flagship phone, it is speculated that it will be powered by Snapdragon 845. As of this writing, there is no information available on its specifications.

The Honor 10 flagship smartphone was launched in the previous month in China. The OnePlus 6 and Smartisan R1 flagship phones will be unveiled in China in this week. The Xiaomi Mi 7 is also expected to debut in the home country by the end of this month. The first teaser of the Lenovo Z5 had already hinted that it may go official on June 14. Even the Vivo APEX phone is expected to release in China in the next month. This indicates that there will be a fierce battle between flagship phones in the coming weeks in China.
