Real Images of Leagoo M5 Edge Surface, Will Launch in June With A 5.0-Inch Dual Curved Display

At the Global Sources Electronics Show last month, Leagoo announced it’s new phone, the M5 Edge. We got to learn of all the details especially its 3D Edgeless display which Leagoo says has an 80% screen-to-body ratio. However, we didn’t get to see a live image of the device.

Thanks to Twitter user @jorkerlee who posted real images of the device, we now have a good idea of what to expect when it launches.

The Leagoo M5 Edge has a dual-curved HD display. Although Leagoo said the phone will be available in Champagne Gold and Obsidian Black, the unit in the image is silver.

The front of the phone looks nice but the lower bezel is pretty huge, leading us to doubt the 80% screen-to-body ratio. The dimensions on the official website states that the phone measures 140 × 68.3 × 8.5mm. So we decided to do the math and came up with 72% instead. That’s a significant difference and we hope Leagoo clears the air on that.

We think the front bezels could have just been made smaller since the fingerprint scanner is positioned at the back and the battery is just 2000mAh.

The M5 Edge has a 13MP rear camera with a slight hump. Right below it is the LED flash and the fingerprint scanner. There are also holes drilled at the bottom for the speaker. The front camera is an 8MP  77.9° wide-angle camera.

AnTuTu’s Phone Users’ Preference Report for April Shows Trending Screen Sizes in China

AnTuTu yesterday released its April mobile phone user preference report which gives a breakdown in form of a chart, of the level of popularity which the various smartphone display sizes enjoy among the domestic market population in China.

antutu

The report reveals what we had already suspected, which is a shift towards large display packing smartphones which falls into the phablet category. Screen sizes measuring between 5 inches to 6 inches accounts for about 82% of the entire market share as documented in the chart. Out of this figure, 5.5-inch displays are the most popular with the lion share of 35.60%. This is followed by the 5.7-inch displays with 10.39% of the market share while 6-inch devices account for 6.38%.

Further, smartphones with 5-inch display size are reducing by the day as it only accounted for 7.66% of the market share while 5.1-inch phones accounted for 15.84% and 5.2-inch phones, 6.06%.  Turns out some persons still find small display packing smartphones fun to use. The AnTuTu listing grouped phones with display sizes ranging between 3.5 inches – 4.9 inches as having a 9.39% share of the market. There are also other sizes which exist and they too grab 8.18% of the market share.

We really don’t know the criteria employed in collating the data but whatever it was, it looks accurate. Large displays are becoming trendy these days in China and manufacturers are even taking it a tad higher by developing large display phones with near absent bezels just like on the Mi Mix. Xiaomi is releasing its next-gen Mi Mix 2 this year, Samsung released a large display device with bezel-less display, and Nubia is tipped as doing the same thing. Even the smaller Chinese manufacturers are not left out as they too are working on bezel-less phone with large displays. A Doogee Mix recently leaked showing a near bezel-less full-screen display. BLUBOO also has a similar device in the work as well as several other Chinese OEM. The competition in the smartphone industry this year will be on several fronts and the display size is likely one of them. Already, the drama has started playing out with the Galaxy S8 already out and doing well in the market.

360 n5s

Official Gionee S10 Camera Samples: The Power Of Bokeh

The latest fad in the smartphone camera department is bokeh. People are obsessed with photos which can blur out the background to highlight the person in front. Usually, you see smartphones coming with two cameras at the back. But what if you want to take amazing selfies with background blur? The Gionee S10 has got you covered on both the front as well as back camera departments because it comes with dual cameras on both the ends.

Gionee S10 black

We can the judge the real quality of the dual cameras only after we get hands on the phone, but for now, we have to rely on the official samples from Gionee. The nine samples that we have got actually looks pretty good and the good thing here is that these samples don’t look out of the world mind-blowing. We have seen a lot of manufacturers release official samples that blow our mind, only to find the real world samples turn out to be pretty average. We hope that the processing of these samples from the Gionee S10 have been limited so that we get very similar results in real life situations.

Gionee S10 Camera Sample 07

To recap, the Gionee S10 comes with a 16MP + 8MP rear dual camera setup with 6P lens and f/1.8 aperture. On the front, you have a 20MP + 8MP dual camera setup for good looking selfies. Night time images are said to be better with the rear setup, but we’ll have to test it in real life situation to confirm it.

For now, just check out the gallery below and let us know what you think of the Gionee S10 camera samples.

6 Days to Launch Date: Nubia Z17 Bezel-less Design & Speed Teased

ZTE’s elite brand, Nubia will be releasing its 2017 flagship which it christened Nubia z17 on June 1. Ahead of the launch event, the company has commenced what could be daily teasing of the Z17’s main features.

Nubia Z17

The company today posted a new teaser on the Nubia smartphone Weibo page which teases the Z17’s bezel-less design that sees the reduction in the side bezels around the screen. The leaked images of the Nubia flagship may not have given us a clear glimpse of the extent of the curves the screen would have because the teaser suggests it would be curved on all four sides.

Read M0re: Nubia Z17 Will Be World’s First Smartphone with Quick Charge 4.0

Apart from the borderless display, the Nubia Z17’s teaser also talked about its super fast speed symbolised by a jetliner on the teaser. This is no doubt, due to the Snapdragon 835 chip the device will feature as already revealed on TENAA and on both AuTuTu and GeekBench. That isn’t the only front where the Z17 will be super fast as the flagship has been revealed as coming with Qualcomm’s latest Quick Charge 4.0 fast charging technology. We are likely going to see more teasers before the final launch date.

Gionee S10 Launched: A Camera Monster With Its Four Camera Design

Gionee has finally launched the much awaited Gionee S10 flagship smartphone. It is one of the top-end models from the company this year and comes with four cameras in total, making it unique among the other dual camera flagships in the market. So, the S10 comes with dual cameras on the front as well as at the back to ensure the phone is capable of capturing amazing selfies as well as bokeh photos from both the camera setups.

Gionee S10 Blue

Gionee S10 Design

There’s no denying that the Gionee S10 takes inspiration from the iPhone 7 Plus. The basic design is very similar to the Apple model, including the horizontal arrangement of the dual camera setup at the back.

Gionee S10 Blue 01

The phone is made out of metal unibody and the back looks refined thanks to the antenna lines that are hidden along the top and bottom edges. It’s thin at 7.35mm but heavy at 178 grams. There are four color options available for the phone right now — Cherry gold, dark night black, indigo gray blue, primrose green.

Gionee S10 Black

Even the front is quite iPhone-like. You have dual cameras on top as well as a soft LED flash. Down below the display, you’ve got a fingerprint sensor.

Gionee S10 Specs

Specs have never really been the highlight of Gionee’s top-end smartphones. The company tends to go with mid-range processors with generous RAM and storage. The same strategy has been applied here, as the Gionee S10 comes with a 2.5GHz Helio P25 octa-core chipset inside with 6GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage. Now, note that the P25 isn’t really a flagship chip and we have seen many mid-rangers from local Chinese companies like Elephone (Elephone P28) and Doogee (Doogee Mix) feature this chipset. It’s pretty good for a mid-ranger but how good will it be handling the requirements of a flagship phone like S10 is something we’ll have to wait and see.

Gionee S10 colors

The Gionee S10 comes with a 5.5-inch 1080p IPS LCD display. Also, there’s a pretty decent 3450mAh capacity battery inside, which should be good enough for a day with P25 powering the phone.

As for the software, the phone comes with AMIGO 4.0 with Android 7. AI is integrated into the software, but we aren’t sure how exactly it would help users in day to day life.

Gionee S10 Cameras

The camera is definitely the highlight of the Gionee S10. The company has included four cameras in total, two at the back and two up front. The rear setup consists of a 16MP primary sensor + an 8MP secondary sensor. Other features include 6P lens and f/1.8 aperture. The company notes that it has worked on the sensor to improve low-light photography significantly. So, you can expect less noise in the night time pictures.

Gionee S10 green 011

Up front, the phone comes with a 20MP + 8MP setup. There’s a selfie flash beside the front camera setup as well.

Now, expect to capture some great bokeh images with the cameras on the Gionee S10. The company wants you to take SLR level depth of field pictures with its camera, but we’ll have to play with it first to see how good the cameras are.

Gionee S10 Price & Availability

The Gionee S10 is not a cheap flagship, as you will have to shell out as much as 2599 Yuan for the 6GB +64GB model. That comes to nearly $380. That’s the territory of a number of super flagships including the Xiaomi Mi 6.

Gionee S10 02

Note that there are two more variants of the device announced, the Gionee S10B and the Gionee S10C. To be honest, they are not the best names for variants of a flagship model, but they are supposed to provide additional options to customers at different price points. Their specs and details are given below:

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 May Launch on July 23 in India

Xiaomi Mi Max 2 was unveiled on May 25 in China. On May 23, Manu Kumar Jain, the Vice President and Managing Director of Xiaomi India released an interesting tweet which probably hints that the Mi Max 2 may launch in India on July 23.

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4 went on its first flash sale in India on January 23 and the company managed to sell over 250,000 units of the phablet.  The first flash sale of Redmi 4A started in India on March 23 and the Chinese company again managed to sell over 250,000 units of the budget phone. On May 23 began the first flash sale of Redmi 4. Again, the company could sell 250,000 units of the phone.

The above tweet indicates that the company may again do a flash sale in India on July 23 as Jain has asked an open-ended question on what device should go on sale on that date. He has not revealed which smartphone will go on flash sale in July. Speculations have it that Xiaomi may either start the flash sale of Mi 6 flagship or Mi Max 2 on July 23.

Xiaomi had released the Mi 5 in April 2016 in India. Hence, speculations are hinting that the Mi 6 may arrive soon. However, an Indian publication had reported in April that Xiaomi will not be releasing Mi 6 in India. The report claims that the Mi 5 did not receive good reception from the Indian consumers as most people prefer to purchase the Redmi Note or Redmi series smartphones that come with affordable pricing. Instead of Xiaomi Mi 6, the company will be releasing a high-end smartphone later this year.

The original Mi Max was launched at June end last year. Hence, there is a possibility that its successor, the Xiaomi Mi Max 2 may go on sale on July 23. The Xiaomi Mi Max 2 features a 6.44-inch full HD display and it is powered by Snapdragon 625 chipset. Before the launch of the Mi Max 2, the rumor mill had predicted that the phablet would be launching in Snapdragon 626 and Snapdragon 660 variants. However, the company decided to launch the phablet with the same chip that is present inside the older model.

Mi Max 2 5300 battery

The Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Redmi Note 4X, Lenovo Moto G5, Moto G5 Plus, ZTE Blade V8 Pro, BlackBerry KEYOne and Smartisan Pro are some of the Snapdragon 625 driven smartphones that have launched this year. The SoC of Mi Max 2 is assisted by 4 GB of RAM. It is packed with a massive battery of 5,300mAh capacity. The 64 GB and 128 GB models of Xiaomi Mi Max 2 are priced at 1,699 and 1,999, respectively.

Samsung Patents a Camera Enabled Smartwatch and a Tablet with Rolling Screen

Samsung may release a new kind of smartwatch and a tablet in the near future. Patent filings of these futuristic Samsung devices have surfaced in the public database of United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) reveal their details.

The patent documents show that the smartwatch has a circular display and the most striking thing about it is that it features a camera sensor right at the center of the display. The camera does not appear to be a mediocre one as it is equipped with optical zoom capabilities.

When it is zoomed to snap an image, the lens of the camera protrudes from the surface of the screen. Its optical zoom can be adjusted by using the crown or by its bezel.

It is too early to confirm whether Samsung will launch such a smartwear soon, but since the company is advancing in making bendable and foldable screens, there is possibility to see such a device in future.

The design of a next-generation Samsung tablet has also appeared on USPTO. This device has a stretchable screen that that appears to be rolled on side of the device. When the right side of the device is pulled outwards, the screen also rolls out.  If the screen is rolled out to some distance, the stretchable screen will display its content in a reduced manner. When the screen is rolled out more, the screen is able to show more content.

Lenovo Confirms on Never Phasing Out its Own Brand

In November 2016, a Chinese report claimed that Lenovo would be only selling Moto branded smartphones. In other world, it won’t be selling phones with Lenovo branding. This news had surfaced when the company’s financial results were not impressive. Today, Yang Yuanqing, the Lenovo Group chariman and chief executive, said to Reuters that the Lenovo brand for smartphones will never be phased out.

According to Yang, even though the company is restructuring its business in China, its mobile business will not be affected in the country. The company has already encountered a widening loss after releasing smartphones with Lenovo and Moto branding. However, the company still wants to maintain dual-brand strategy. In some markets, Lenovo is selling smartphones with both branding. However, in other markets, it is only selling Lenovo or Moto phones.

Motorola is So Sure Its Batteries Won’t Explode Like the Galaxy Note 7

The Galaxy Note 7 battery fiasco has now turned to a reference point for smartphone makers especially on safety checks that are needed during the manufacturing process. The exploding battery also threw so many OEMs into becoming more cautious especially in adopting Quick Charge features. Despite the Snapdragon 835 chip coming with Qualcomm’s QC 4.0. All three devices that have so far been launched with SD 835 came without having the technology on board.

Lenovo Motorola

So too, a good number of the smartphone makers have been silent about the issue all this while. However, Motorola’s Russ Gyenes has broken the eerie silence just when we thought the last has been heard about the Galaxy Note 7’s battery issue. Russ Gyenes, who is Motorola’s battery engineer, was speaking to a group of Journalists recently when the question of the Note 7’s battery flaws came up. Mr. Gyenes believes that his company would have detected the battery flaws at the early stages. He also disclosed that his company did not make any changes to its battery manufacturing process after the Note 7 issues flared up. He questioned why Samsung wasn’t doing the eight-point safety check before the incident and also gave a detailed explanation of the rigorous procedures that would be exhausted satisfactorily before the battery is mass produced.

The statement is meant to project Motorola’s own process for battery testing which he believed is very safe and tight. This is not the first time Motorola is delving into the battery issues of one of its major rivals. Around September last year, Motorola released an ad poster promoting the Moto Z Droid. Motorola boasted on the ad that unlike other manufacturers, the company adheres to the highest standard in quality and testing of all its batteries.

The company will release a refurbished version of the Note 7 very soon in select markets. How about that for a comeback?

This LG V30 Render is Based on the G6’s Design But Packs Four Cameras & A Secondary Display

LG pulled a risky move when it launched its flagship phone, the LG G6 with a Snapdragon 821 processor early this year. That move paid off as people were not really bothered about the processor but were blown away with the display and overall design. The move also gave LG the chance to get a head-start in sales before the Snapdragon 835 phones started launching.

LG V30 Render

LG has already announced that the LG V30 will be its major flagship for the year. It will be powered by the Snapdragon 835, and according to leaks, will feature dual front cameras. Also for the first time, LG’s high-end smartphone will sport an OLED display. We have also seen a patent that shows a bezel-less phone with a dual display that some speculate may appear in the V30 or G7.

DBS Designing has put together all these details and made a render of the LG V30. It looks really sleek and packs a number of interesting features.

There is a 5.8-inches QHD display with a smaller ticker screen at the top just beside the dual 8MP front facing cameras. It is equipped with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage with MicroSD support. The rear cameras are 13MP sensors and there is a 5,500mAh battery under the hood.

Samsung Galaxy Note 8 Front Panel Appears in a Leaked Video; Reveals Huge Infinity Display

Samsung is slated to announce the Galaxy Note 8 flagship phone in August or September this year. Hence, various leaksters are now working hard to reveal fresh information on the Samsung’s upcoming flagship phablet. A Chinese leakster has revealed a short video clip that shows the alleged front panel of the Galaxy Note 8.

He is the same leakster who accurately predicted that the Galaxy Note 8 will not be the first Samsung phone to feature dual rear cameras. He had stated that the Galaxy C10 would be releasing before Note 8 with dual rear cameras. Here is the video showing Galaxy Note 8’s front panel:

Samsung introduced Infinity Display on Galaxy S8 and Galaxy S8+ smartphones which offers a QHD+ resolution of 2,960 x 1,440 pixels along with an aspect ratio 18.5:9. The display occupies over 80 percent of the Galaxy S8’s front screen. The inclusion of Infinity Display on Galaxy S8 has resulted in super-slim top and bottom bezels.

The Galaxy Note 8’s front panel video shows that it will be also arriving with an Infinity Display. The front panel seems to have a cutout for selfie camera. However, the cutout for iris scanner is not visible. Previous prototypes and leaked schematic of Galaxy Note 8 have suggested that the top bezel features an iris scanner.

Samsung Galaxy S7 came with 5.1-inch screen and Galaxy S7 Edge has a 5.5-inch display. However, the Galaxy S8 has a larger screen of 5.8 inches and its larger sibling has a 6.2-inch display. This indicates that the Galaxy Note 8 will come with a larger screen than Galaxy S8+ and this has been confirmed (not officially) through other leaks that it will come with a 6.3-inch dual-edge curved display.

The Galaxy S8 duo have been criticized for the unfriendly positioning of its rear-mounted fingerprint reader. Hence, the Note 8’s fingerprint scanner is speculated to be placed under the front glass. Rumors suggest that it will be arriving in Snapdragon 835 and Exynos 9810 chipset variants. Some of the other rumored specs of Note 8 include 6 GB RAM, 256 GB storage, 3,600mAh battery with wireless charging support, IP68 certified chassis and S-Pen stylus.

While we cannot say for sure if this is authentic or not, it is not out of place if such collaborative effort is in the works. For one, Meizu has been a long time admirer of Nokia even to the extent of using Nokia devices on a couple of its launch posters. Back in 2015, Meizu sent out the invite for the M2 along with a Nokia 1110 photo and just last year, they also sent out invites for another launch along with a Nokia E71.  That doesn’t confirm anything though, so we’ll wait to see what the two companies have in store for us.
