OPPO Realme 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro: Value For Money Mid-Rangers Compared!

With its Realme 1, OPPO has launched its official sub-brand in the market. Sub-brands are usually focused on the quality-price ratio, and it seems to be the same with the new OPPO brand. The Realme 1 is the perfect midrange smartphone and it is going to rival devices like Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro which is already among the best-sellers in several nations. With this comparison, we will compare OPPO Realme 1 vs Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro in order to establish if the new Realme 1 may be a real menace to RN5P’s sales or if Redmi Note 5 Pro still has a higher value for money.

The Realme 1 definitely looks better than the Redmi Note 5 Pro. It comes with a glass back which is refined in the reflective Diamond Black color. Even the front design is aligned to 2018 devices featuring a notch on top and a full screen panel.

The two devices are similar in performance: both have nice midrange SoCs. Snapdragon 636’s strong points are its powerful modem and efficiency, while Helio P60 performs very well in daily use and even with heavy apps. OPPO Realme 1, unlike Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro, is available in a configuration with 128 GB of internal storage. So, it’s safe to say Oppo Realme 1 is more interesting in terms of hardware. But note that the OPPO model doesn’t have a fingerprint sensor and you have to rely on the less secure face unlock.

When it comes to cameras, Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro is the winner. It has a rear dual camera which shoots decent quality photos in every scenario and an excellent 20 MP selfie camera paired with a front-facing LED flash. Even portrait mode on both the cameras are excellent. Realme 1’s AI front and back cameras do have bokeh mode, but it’s based on software and are not really that good. Note that Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro also has a bigger battery and it lasts more on a single charge.

Xiaomi Redmi Note 5 Pro wins the comparison, but the OPPO Realme 1 starts at a cheaper price ( $133/€112) as compared to $218/€184 for the Redmi model.

OnePlus 6 Detailed Hands On: Midnight Black, Mirror Black, & Silk White In Focus!

We were present at the OnePlus 6 event in Mumbai, India yesterday and we got to check out all the new models, including the limited Marvel Avengers Infinity War Edition.

Since the specs and features of the OnePlus 6 have already been revealed, let’s directly go on to the hands on with the two black variants of the new model. They differ quite significantly in the kind of texture and color on the back, so it’s quite likely that you’ll have only one of these as your favourites. You can even say that they are quite the opposites when it comes to the back texture, so let’s take a closer look at the two models.

But before that, let’s cover the basics first. The OnePlus 6 features a notch up front, which is quite small, but could be considered intrusive by some. For them, the company has a solution — same as the one implemented by Huawei. You can essentially hide the notch, by covering the sides with a black layer. To be honest, it’ll eat up the available screen space on top, but at least it’ll look symmetrical, which some might consider essential! The chin at the bottom of the screen is quite thin and won’t hinder your experience.

[envira-gallery id=”191649″]

There are no capacitive buttons which means you have to live with the on screen ones. If it bothers you that the on screen buttons are taking up your essential screen real estate, you can switch to gestures for navigation. I personally tried out the gestures and it felt quite intuitive, or should I say at least some of them felt natural. The swipe up gesture from below to get to home feels perfect. However, getting a step back or forward was not as easy as I initially thought. Instead of having to swipe right from the left side or vice versa to go back or forward, the gestures on the OP6 is designed in such a way that you have to swipe up from the bottom left corner to go back or swipe up from the bottom right corner to go forward. I didn’t find this ideal, especially when I was operating the phone with one hand. Imagine having to reach the bottom right or bottom left corners when you are using it with one hand — trust me, its quite hard!

OnePlus 6 AVengers Edition 03
OnePlus 6 AVengers Limited Edition Front

There’s Gorilla Glass 5 on the front as well as back, so the phone is well protected. The metal frame holds the phone together and retains the metallic color on all the models except for the Silk White edition which features a rose gold frame. The back has the dual f/1.7 aperture cameras with a flash and a fingerprint sensor below it. This is really the place where the different color editions of the OnePlus 6 stand out.

The right side has the alert slider and the power button. On the left, you have the volume buttons and the SIM card slot. Bottom features a USB Type-C port, speakers (not stereo), and a dedicated 3.5mm headphone jack.

OnePlus 6 Hands on 14
Midnight Black!

The OnePlus 6 Mirror Black variant is the one with the glossy finish. If you love mirror finish on smartphones, then you are going to instantly love the Mirror Black edition. The combination of premium glass and gloss finish make it a beautiful design. As you might expect, the back is quite reflective but that makes it stand out from the crowd. However, this does bring the issue of fingerprints on the back. So, its a huge fingerprint magnet and during my time with the device I had to wipe it at least a few times to ensure there weren’t any smudges. Nevertheless, if you keep the back clean (you’ll have to work for it), then it is one beautiful looking smartphone.

OnePlus 6 Hands on 06

[envira-gallery id=”191645″]

Coming to the OnePlus 6 Midnight Black model — there’s no doubt that this is my favourite edition among the two. The phone features a matte like finish, despite being made of glass. This is achieved by a corrosion process that ensures the glass back becomes rough like matte. But it isn’t too rough either. It’s a perfect balance between the two and to be honest, this particular finish looks quite beautiful. The fact that it isn’t a big fingerprint magnet gives it definite bonus points. Also, the back is designed in a way that under a strong light, it makes an S shape. Depending upon the angle of the light, the S moves. You can clearly see this in most of the images.

OnePlus 6 Hands on 11

[envira-gallery id=”191646″]

Coming to the Silk White model, it’s a real show stealer. The model stands out among the three standard colors and it’s a shame that its being marketed as a limited edition. I personally feel that this model should be added among the other two black variants as a regular edition. The phone has a premium feel to it, featuring a rose gold frame and a smooth white body. It’s not smooth enough to be slippery but the soft texture feels good to touch. Personally, I feel the Silk White model brings out the best of OnePlus 6’s design as every curve and groove on the phone stands out in this particular edition.

Leaked Prototype of Vivo Bezel-less Model Shows More Chamfered Edges Than The APEX

vivo apex

Vivo took the industry by storm two months back when it launched the Vivo APEX with a scintillating new design spearheaded by an almost bezel-less display. The APEX features a 91% screen ratio which is quite large. The device isn’t available yet and mass production may have just commenced. However, a new bezel-less model was spotted on Slashleaks recently and even though the device looks similar to the Apex, there are some differences which mark it as different from it. Well, so we think.vivo

The leaked  Vivo device seems to have a similar screen design as well as the retractable selfie camera as the Apex. But the phone has well-chamfered / curved edges that are more rounded than that of the Apex. Apart from this, there isn’t any other difference in the design.

While we could take a wild shot at this being a new Vivo bezel-less phone, it is possible that this is the Vivo APEX with an adjusted design. Since what got unveiled was prototypes of the device, it is possible that the final design may be slightly different. We can’t be so too sure about that but we’ll be on the lookout for further details.

OnePlus 6 Avengers Infinity War Edition Hands On: Carbon Fiber Meets Glass

Just when we thought the OnePlus event was over, the company surprised us with the announcement of the OnePlus 6 Avengers Infinity War Edition. Well, at least we acted as if we were surprised, but the phone was already revealed in China and an India launch was confirmed a couple of weeks before.

OnePlus 6 AVengers Edition 05

OnePlus isn’t new to making special edition smartphones and fans loved the Star Wars Edition that came out late last year. The company aims to replicate the same level of success with the OnePlus 6 Avengers Infinity War edition but this time, they are going for a black design instead of a premium white finish as the Star Wars edition.

OnePlus 6 AVengers Edition 03

Carbon Fiber meets glass in the Avengers special edition as the phone aims to be unique by offering the same level of glossy finish as the Mirror Black Edition along with a Carbon Fiber texture inside. The company has achieved this by adding a thin layer of carbon fiber finish underneath the glossy glass back. The resulting design looks unlike any other smartphone we’ve seen before. The carbon fiber texture is quite bold and visible, but the phone is smooth and glossy. It feels as if Carbon Fiber and Glass had a baby.

OnePlus 6 AVengers Edition 09

The basic design remains the same but the OnePlus and Avengers logo come in golden. Further, the alert slider also gets a gold finish to make it look premium.

But will Avengers be ever complete without the Iron Man? Never! And that applies to the OP6 Avengers edition as well. The company is throwing a special Iron Man case with the phone which looks pretty cool. The company did the same with the Star Wars Edition by throwing in a Kylo Ren case, but this one looks even better.

[envira-gallery id=”191605″]

Apart from this, the rest of the phone is same as the regular OnePlus 6. There are a few additions in the software department though, like five new Avengers Infinity War themes and an Avengers Clock widget.

Along with this specially designed smartphone, the company is also bundling Iron Man protective case in the box as well as one of the six Avenger superhero medals in each box (Hulk, Black Widow, Black Panther, Iron Man, Captain America and Thor).

OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition Box Contents

However, the specifications of the phone remain same as the regular model. It comes with a 6.28-inch notched AMOLED display with screen resolution of  2280 x 1080 pixels and 19:9 aspect ratio. Under the hood, the phone is powered by Qualcomm‘s Snapdragon 845 octa-core processor.

The regular model of  OnePlus 6 comes in different memory configuration — 6GB and 8GB RAM along with 64GB, 128GB and 256GB internal storage option. However, this Avengers Limited Edition smartphone comes with 8GB RAM and 256GB internal storage.

The smartphone sports a 16MP primary Sony IMX519 sensor with f/1.7 aperture, 1.22um pixels, and OIS, and a 20MP Sony IMX376K secondary camera sensor, mainly for depth information. On the front side also, there’s a 16MP snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

OnePlus 6 Marvel Avengers Limited Edition

As for the software, the smartphone is running the company’s own OxygenOS, which is based on Android 8.1 Oreo operating system out of the box. However, the OnePlus is already a part of Android P Beta program and thus, users can also try out the upcoming Android P. The phone is powered by a 3,300mAh battery, with support for company’s fast charging technology — Dash Charge 2.0.

Check out the 1TB Storage-Packing Smartisan R1 Hands on Pictures

Smartisan has as its slogan “the joy of Artisans”. Indeed, the company which is a conglomeration of artisans has carved out a name for itself as a result of its sleekly designed smartphones. The recently announced flagship – Smartisan R1 is no exception. The phone came with a stunner as it packs a 1TB storage on one of the variants. That isn’t going to be a very popular variant, though, considering its  ¥8,848 (~$1388) price tag. Of course, there are other versions with pocket-friendly prices.Smartisan R1

The Smartisan Nut R1 comes with an expansive 6.17-inch pressure sensitive display with a 2242 x 1080 resolution and an 18.7:9 aspect ratio. The display is protected by a Gorilla Glass 3 protection and equally has 1500:1 contrast ratio, and a 96% color gamut (DCI-P3).smartisan r1

The Smartisan R1 packs an ultra-thin body and as a result, Smartisan had to sacrifice the 3.5mm audio jack. Since it doesn’t feature one, there is a 3.5mm to USB-C adapter inside the retail box. The device packs a rear camera setup aligned horizontally in the top left corner. The rear panel is also made of glass. The device has its volume rockers and power button on the right side of the display. There is also a button on the right side but we don’t know its functions as of now. Smartisan R1

The dual rear cameras consist of a 12MP Sony IMX363 sensor with a f/1.8 aperture, 1.4 μm pixel size, 4-axis OIS, and dual PD extreme focus. The second is a 20MP Sony IMX350 with a f/1.75 aperture, 1μm pixel size, and 6P lens. On the other hand, the front camera is a 24MP sensor with a f/2.0 aperture ArcSoft ray algorithm and AI real-time beauty mode.

The Nut R1 packs a Snapdragon 845 chipset and has a host of network bands including LTE Band 20 which positions it for sales overseas. Recall that Smartisan signed a deal recently with ECoinmerce to ship its phones to North America. That means the R1 will likely be available outside China just as a few of Smartisan phones are available outside China via e-retailers.smartisan R1 unboxing

In addition, the device is available in White and Black colour variants. Who knows, we might see a red variant sometime later but for now if you prefer something different from white or black, you’ll have to make do with the colourful protective cases available. As for the prices, then 6GB RAM + 64GB is priced at ¥3,499 (~$549), 6GB RAM + 128GB for ¥3,999 (~$627), 8GB RAM + 128GB priced ¥4,499 (~$705) and 8GB RAM + 1TB for ¥8,848 (~$1388)

ASUS Zenfone Live L1 Gets Proper Launch: Price and Availability Details Released

A few weeks ago, ASUS launched the Zenfone Live L1 in Indonesia but there were a number of details missing. Today, the phone has gotten a proper announcement with all the missing details included.

ASUS Zenfone Live L1

The Zenfone Live L1 is an entry-level phone that can best be described as ASUS’ version of the Xiaomi Redmi Note 5A/Y1 Lite. However, the ASUS has some key advantages over the Redmi.

The Zenfone Live L1 has a 5.5-inch screen but its 1440 x 720 screen resolution which translates to an 18:9 aspect ratio gives it a 5” form factor. So it is smaller and lighter though thicker than the Redmi Note 5A. The screen has glove support and also has a Bluelight filter.

The Zenfone Live L1 comes in two variants – an Android Go version and a regular version. The Android Go version has 1GB RAM and 16GB storage, an 8MP rear camera, and of course, runs Android Oreo (Go edition). The regular model which runs Android Oreo with ZenUI 5 overlay has 2GB/3GB of RAM, 16GB/32GB of storage, and a 13MP rear camera.

The remaining specs are the same. They are both powered by the Snapdragon 425 processor and have 5MP front-facing cameras. Both also use a triple card tray which lets you use 2 SIM cards (LTE on both slots) and also add up to 2TB of extra storage via a MicroSD card.

There is Bluetooth 4.0, 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, GPS, FM Radio, a micro USB port, and a 3.5mm audio jack. There is no fingerprint scanner but there is Face Unlock. The battery capacity is 3,000mAh for both models.

Microsoft is Making Cheaper Surface Tablets To Take On The iPad (& Maybe Chromebook Tab)

The Microsoft Surface Pro is the latest tablet from the Redmond-based corporation. Advertised as the tablet that can replace your laptop, the Surface Pro starts at $799. There are reports we may get smaller and cheaper Surface Tablets in the near future.

The last time Microsoft made smaller-sized tablets, they weren’t very successful. The last was the Surface 3 and Microsoft stopped production for it in 2016.

Microsoft Surface Pro

The news of smaller Surface tablets comes from Bloomberg which reports that the smaller tablets will have 10-inch screens, rounded corners, a USB-C port for power, and will have a $400 price tag. This pricing will put it in the same league with Apple’s new 9.7-inch iPad.

The smaller size means a smaller battery, so you won’t get the same battery life from the larger Surface models. However, it will be about 20% lighter and easy to carry around for long hours.

The new smaller Surface tablets will not be powered by Qualcomm chips running Windows 10 on ARM but will run full Windows 10 Pro. However, it will also offer models with LTE.

The $400 price means a number of things will be cut out. The new Surface tablets won’t come with a keyboard or stylus out of the box. So if you need those, you will have to pay extra. At the moment, the cheapest keyboard cover on the Microsoft store is $129.99 and the Surface Pen is $99.99. However, Mircosoft is said to be working on newer and less expensive versions.
