Mediatek to release a cheaper and secure version of 3D Face Recognition in partnership with Himax And Megvi

In a major development, Mediatek has joined hands with Hima, a popular manufacturer of display drivers and Megvi, Developer of Face++ to launch a new cheaper version of 3D face Recognition. In a bid to improve the reach of the 3D Face Recognition, Mediatek is collaboratively working on an Industry’s First Active Stereo Camera 3D Sensing Reference Design. Many smartphone manufacturers are already asking for the reference design to implement the tech in their upcoming devices.

All these major giants has shared their world class technology with each other to make the cheaper and secure version of 3D Face recognition. It will help users to have secured online Android payment and facial recognition even in difficult environments. Further, Artificial Intelligence can be used in various ways using ASC 3D face recognition. It can be used to enhance photos and can boost security measures.

It is built using Megvii’s Face++ AI-based computer vision algorithm with Himax’s cutting-edge projector, sensor and laser driver. Then, it combines MediaTek’s stereo matching depth engine. It involves some critical technologies such as Himax’s DOE, WLO Technology, high efficient laser driver IC, etc. Speaking about the new ASC 3D (Active Stereo Camera).

“We are pleased to partner with MediaTek and Megvii. This strong alliance ensures that 3D sensing is affordable for Android mass market and can be easily adopted by smartphone makers to create exciting user experience. I believe ASC will facilitate a broader adoption of 3D sensing on Android smartphone during 2019,” said Jordan Wu, President and Chief Executive Officer of Himax Technologies.

ASC (3D) Face Recognition Features:

It creates 7000-1000 invisible dot to layout the face on the 3D map. It helps in improving the precision.
ASC (3D) uses 940nm band which will increase its overall efficiency in both indoor and outdoor environments.
It involves broken glass detection which will shut down laser if broken glass is found in the projector.
ASC (3D) is purely safe for the eyes as it follows IEC 60825 Class 1 standard.
It is cheaper than the traditional lightning mode and power efficient.

Mediatek’s ASC Face Recognition debut in smartphones by next year. Given that its cheaper, we can expect a lot more phones gain access to secure 3D face recognition next year.

10 million Honor 7X units sold; Honor sets 20 million Honor 8X units’ sales goal

Honor has recently introduced the Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max smartphones in China. Just as the Honor 7X from was well-received by the customers all over the world, Honor President Zhao Ming is expecting that the Honor 8X series will also encounter impressive sales. The company has set a goal to achieve 20 million units sales of the Honor 8X which is around twice the amount Honor 7X units that were sold.

During a media interview, Zhao Ming said that the Honor 8X does not have a real competitor when it comes its pricing and design. He claimed that the current sales of the Honor 7x is around 15 million units. Hence, the Honor 8X sales target is 20 million units.

The Honor 8X with 64 GB of storage and 4 GB of RAM is priced at 1,399 Yuan (~$204) whereas the other variant featuring 64 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM costs 1,599 Yuan (~$238). The highest configuration that carries a pricing of 1,899 Yuan (~$277) has 128 GB of storage and 6 GB of RAM. The pre-sales of the smartphone will take place between Sept. 6 and Sept. 10 in China and its official sales will start on Sept. 11 at 10:08 AM.

The Honor 8X features Rheinland TUV certified display which means that the display of the phone does not emit harmful blue rays. Moreover, it is equipped with a marvelous 6.5-inch screen that offers 91 percent screen-to-body ratio. The Kirin 710 chipset is present under the hood of the device and it is packed with a 3,750mAh battery.

On the other side, the Honor 8X Max is larger device with a Rheinland TUV certified massive display of 7.12 inches. The Snapdragon 636 and 5,000mAh battery are the driving force of the smartphone. It is also equipped with Dolby panoramic sound. The 64 GB storage + 4 GB RAM and 128 GB storage + 4 GB RAM variants of the Honor 8X Max re respectively priced tag 1,499 Yuan (~$220) and 1,799 Yuan (~$263). There will be Snapdragon 660 edition of the smartphone which is slated to hit the market in the next month.

Lenovo Z5 Pro slider design revealed in a leaked video

Lenovo had launched the Lenovo Z5 smartphone in June. Even though it was expected to sport a bezel-less full screen design with flagship specs, the handset debuted as a mid-range phone with notched display. Lenovo Group VP Chang Cheng had recently shared a short clip of an upcoming slider phone, but its name was not revealed. Fresh leaks reveal that the handset may get introduced as Lenovo Z5 Pro. A leaked video that has surfaced on Weibo shows the slider design of the Z5 Pro in action.

Earlier this week, a leaked video showing the manual slider mechanism of Xiaomi Mi MIX 3 flagship phone had appeared on Weibo. The below video reveals that like the Mi MIX 3, the Z5 Pro will be also equipped with a manual slider design. The handset can be seen sporting Lenovo’s UI which hints that it is not Mi MIX 3 phone.

There is no information available on the specifications of the Lenovo Z5 Pro. The slider design allows the Z5 Pro to sport a notch-less screen since the front-facing camera and other components are placed on the other part of the phone.

A touch on the display unlocks the phone which suggests that it will be arriving with an in-display fingerprint scanner. The Lenovo Z5 came with a Snapdragon 636 chipset, but the Z5 Pro may come equipped with a better SoC. Hence, it may feature Snapdragon 710 or Snapdragon 660 chipset.

During the IFA 2018 tech expo, Honor confirmed that it had teased the design of the Honor Magic 2 smartphone. Apart from packing in flagship specs, it will be arriving with a manual slider design. This shows that multiple smartphone makers from China such as Honor, Xiaomi and Lenovo are prepping up to launch phones with the new design to offer higher screen space to the user. Hence, it appears that there could be fierce competition between such phones before the year comes to an end.

Honor Magic 2 to embrace AI features in Slider, Enters Mass Production!

Yesterday, Honor launched the bezelless Honor 8X at an event in Beijing. Now, they are embracing for Honor Magic 2 which is supposed to carry 100% bezel-less display using the new slider technology. At IFA 2018, President of Honor smartphone, Zhao Ming confirmed some of the specs about the Honor Magic 2. Zhao revealed that Honor Magic 2 will carry Kirin 980 and will have Artificial Intelligence (AI) features.

As seen in the renders before and now even even confirmed by Zhao, Honor Magic 2 will carry Sliding Display with 100% bezel-less design. Honor Magic 2 is now in the mass production and soon it will be ready for launch. Honor Band 4 launches with color AMOLED screen and continuous heart rate tracking

Apart from the Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max announced today, Honor also unveiled its latest smartband, the Honor Band 4. The new smart band packs a number of new and interesting features good enough to give other smart bands a run for their money.

The biggest change is the addition of a color AMOLED display. The screen is 0.9-inches and can display up to 45 Chinese characters. Another new addition is support for continuous heart rate monitoring.

Unlike some other smart bands that only monitor at intervals, the Honor Band 4 monitors your heart rate all the time. The heart rate chart can be viewed on the app. The band will also notify you if your heart rate is high and has an infrared sensor for nighttime detection. Honor says they have upgraded the heart rate sensor and increased the size to cover a larger area.

The Honor Band 4 has NFC and supports payment. The band can still track steps, swimming speed, calories burnt, and distance covered. The Honor Band 4 is waterproof up to 50 meters. It also alerts you of calls and messages.

The band connects via Bluetooth 4.2 and works with devices running iOS 9.0 and up and Android 4.4 and up. It weighs 23 grams and measures 43 x 17.2 x 11.5 mm. Honor doesn’t state the battery capacity but says it can last up to 14 days when it’s not continuously tracking your heart rate and 6 days if continuous tracking is turned on.

Xiaomi exec promotes Poco F1 with Fake camera samples

Sadly, faking samples to promote smartphones seems to be becoming a normal marketing strategy. After Huawei posted camera samples taken from a DSLR pretending them to be shot from the Nova 3i, and after various Chinese smartphone were caught cheating on benchmarks, now even Xiaomi is trying to promote its latest flagship by posting fake photos. The company’s top exec Donovan Sung posted a new camera sample on Instagram to promote the Poco F1. But some Reddit users immediately discovered that this camera sample is far from being new and it wasn’t taken from Xiaomi Poco F1‘s dual cameras.

Indeed, Donovan Sung had already posted this photo in April to promote the Xiaomi Mi Mix 2S, and it also contained the watermark highlighting that it has been shot on Mi Mix 2S AI dual camera. He canceled the watermark, filtered the photo, then reposted it on Instagram saying that it has been taken from the new Poco F1. This was probably done because, in order to guarantee a very affordable price while keeping a flagship hardware side, the company decided to equip the handset with inferior cameras compared with other Mi flagships.

Indeed, while the primary sensor is borrowed from the Mi 8 (the primary sensor has a 12 MP resolution and a f/1.9 aperture), the secondary one is a cheap 5 MP lens with f/2.0 and it is used for capturing depth information. On the other hand, there is to consider that this is the most affordable device with a Snapdragon 845 chipset inside, which is the best Qualcomm SoC at the moment. It is especially thought for gamers and for the most advanced users, even though it comes with a cheap polycarbonate design to cut costs.

Nubia Z18 is the company’s latest flagship model and it is indeed a flagship in all sense. The design includes the now popular waterdrop screen but even at that, the design is spectacular. You get a high screen to body ratio and even at that, the screen is curved. The Z18 is available in three attractive colours; Nebula Red, Deep Dark Night, and a Starry Night edition. We brought you the hands-on photos of the Nebula Red, and Deep Dark Night variants not too long ago. Now you can check out the Starry Night variant in these official pictures.

The Z18 Starry Night variant is unlike what we have seen in previous smartphones. The back panel is coated in a dark blue on the upper aspects while the lower part is a cool mixture of white and blue with a touch of yellow in such a way that it looks like the night sky full of stars. It even seems to have done a better job than Van Gogh did with his oil painting – Starry Night from where the design draws inspiration. This is an impressive paint job, especially since the back panel is made from glass.

The Nubia Z18 Van Gogh Starry Night Collector’s Edition is priced at 3,599 Yuan, roughly $526. The Z18 will go on sale from September 11 through Nubia’s official website, Jingdong Mall, Suning, and Tianmao Mall. However, we don’t know if this edition will be available. Huawei Mate 20 starring in concept video with no chin, waterdrop notch and triple camera

At IFA 2018 Huawei confirmed that the new Huawei Mate 20 series will be officially unveiled on October 16 in London: almost a month and a half from now. Meanwhile, its Lite version has been already announced and several leaks have started to surface online. Now, a known YouTube channel called Concept Creator has published a concept video showing the handset from every angle and revealing one of the most innovative and beautiful designs of 2018. Note that this is not the official look of the upcoming flagship, but the video is based on the most reliable leak and pieces of info surfaced in the past couple of months.

According to the concept video, Huawei Mate 20 will have a full borderless design with no chin and a waterdrop notch containing the front camera only. Bezels will not be the thinnest you have ever seen on a phone, but they will be quite narrow and, most importantly, all of them will sport the same thickness, adding to its symmetry. Above the front camera, there will still be some space for the earpiece, but the fingerprint reader will be placed on the back.

So, even this year we won’t likely see an in-display fingerprint reader on the standard version of the Mate 20, but it may be exclusive for the Porsche Design variant (which is still unconfirmed). Talking about the rear side, we can clearly see a glass panel (the frame is made of metal), as well as a triple camera setup placed at the center in a 2×2 matrix (one spot is occupied by a circular flash LED). On the lower part of the phone, there is a speaker grille, a USB-C port to charge the device and a microphone, while at sec 0:30 in the video we can briefly see a 3.5 mm audio jack on the upper part.

iVoomi launches its sub-brand Innelo in India, will soon launch Amazon-exclusive smartphone

We recently reported that iVoomi is planning to launch a new sub-brand in the Indian market and will also launch a budget smartphone under its new brand. Today, iVoomi officially launched its sub-brand Innelo and said that the brand will be backed by supply chain, operations and service infrastructure of iVoomi in the Indian market.

The company added that it’ll be supported by a network of more than 500 service centers across the country. Along with that, it also announced that the company will launch a new budget smartphone with a notched display under this new brand, which will be available for purchase exclusively through Amazon India.

However, the company has not yet announced the launch date for its new smartphone, but the launch will take place by the end of this month. After the smartphone, the company is also eyeing to expand the business by introducing smart accessories.

Commenting on the launch of the new brand, Ashwin Bhandari, CEO, Innelo India, said:

He further added that the products that would be launched in India will be priced between Rs. 7,000 to Rs. 13,000 and would contribute to the ‘Make In India’ initiative but assembling and packaging the products in India.

In regards to the phone from the company, Innelo has already teased that the device will have a sleek design and will be available in multiple color options. However, no more information is known about the upcoming smartphone.

Samsung Galaxy View 2 certified by Wi-Fi Alliance & Bluetooth SIG

The biggest Android tablet ever launched has a successor. Samsung Galaxy View 2 has officially received both Wi-Fi and the Bluetooth certifications, and this proves that the Korean giant is planning to unveil it soon. The upcoming huge tablet has been certified with the model number SM-T927A, but not much has been revealed about its specs sheet. At the moment, we know that it will support Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n/ac networks, the dual band technology with 2.4G and 5G frequencies and Bluetooth 5.0.

The last info surfaced on the listings was that it will have Android Oreo installed out of the box. For the rest of the specs of Samsung Galaxy View 2, we still have to rely on previous reports. According to them, the tablet will sport a smaller display than its predecessor, but it will still be a huge panel with a diagonal of 17.5 inches and a Full HD resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels.

China’s once booming video gaming market is under pressure as regulators have tightened its grip on the approval of new games. This is not a new thing, as according to China’s top state media, Government has not granted any new licenses to any new games since March, 2018. For a market as big as China, this is a really big deal!

China is doing so to tackle the increasing gaming addiction among children. As per the Xinhua News Agency, Online Gaming is a huge hazard to health and deteriorate their overall development.

The news began circulating, after last week’s document which was published under the guidance of Chinese president Xi Jinping. The document outlines how China would decrease the myopia ailment among children’s. In a response, today, Xinhua News Agency stated that “For the nation’s future, we can never allow gaming companies to hunt for wealth by inducing teens to get addicted [to games].”

Gaming addiction is not new concept in China, but it has risen to alarming levels now. In rural China, children are more addicted to games due to different lifestyle. The new commentary by State Media directly follows the latest report by the WHO (World health Organisation), which states that compulsively playing video games qualifies as a mental health condition. Further, gaming shift the focus of children from studies and mislead them with wrong views about the world. These reasons are catering to the China Government’s decision to tighten the grip over the gaming market.

Now, the Chinese regulator will restrict the amount of time people spend in playing games. Also, they will try to restrict games which are more prone to addiction. It will also establish a new reminder system for games which will send notifications to users and will remind about the time, and health advisories.

The new stand by Chinese Government will surely hit the gaming companies in China. It has been the largest gaming market in terms of size but now, the growth is slowing for the first time after many years. The Year-on-Year growth has dipped this year. Even, China’s major internet giant, Tencent Holdings has posted loss for the first time since 2005. Similarly, NetEase, one of the World’s biggest game companies has got lower earnings than expected. No new games have been published since March 28, 2018 in China. Currently, we are unsure when China will start issuing licenses to new Games.

Honor 8X and Honor 8X Max announced: large displays, Kirin & Snapdragon processors and big batteries

Huawei’s Honor sub-brand has announced two new smartphones for the mid-range category. They are the Honor 8X and the Honor 8X Max. Both phones are not just bigger versions of each other but also differ with respect to specifications.

Honor 8X

The Honor 8X has a 6.5-inch 1080 x 2340 screen with a notch. This is the same type of notch we have seen on other Honor phones this year. Honor says the phone has a 91% screen to body ratio, a 19.5:9 aspect ratio, a 4.25mm narrow chin and has a COF packaging process.

The phone is also the first smartphone to have a TUV Rheinland certified display. The certification means the device passes TUV Rheinland’s test for safe displays.

The Honor 8X has a unique design. The back is covered in a 15-layer glare 2.5D glass which has two different textures. The frame is made of metal and there is glass on the front too.

The Honor 8X is powered by a Kirin 710 processor paired with 6GB of RAM and 128GB of expandable storage. It has a 16MP f/2.0 front-facing camera with tons of features and a 20MP + 2MP dual camera combo on the rear. The rear camera has AI scene recognition which changes the camera settings to best suit what you are trying to shoot. There are also tons of shooting modes including portrait mode, slow-motion recording, and time-lapse photography.

The phone runs Android 8.1 Oreo with EMUI 8.2 on top. It has a 3,750mAh battery but sadly only supports 5V/2A charging via a MicroUSB port. The Honor 8X supports using two SIM card (nano only) and a MicroSD card slot at the same time. There is Bluetooth 4.2 and support for aptX audio. It also has a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner and supports GPU Turbo.

Price and Availability

The Honor 8X comes in black, blue, red, and purple. It is priced at ¥1899 (~$240) for the 6GB RAM + 128GB version. There is also a 4GB RAM + 64GB version priced at ¥1399 (~$177) and a 6GB RAM + 64GB version priced at ¥1599 (~$202). Pre-orders begin today up until September 10 while main sales will commence on September 11 at 10 AM.

Honor 8X Max

The Honor 8X max has a 7.12-inch water-drop display with a 1080 x 2244 resolution. It also has a TUV Rheinland certification which means the display is safe for the eyes.

Powering the Honor 8X Max is the Snapdragon 636 processor paired with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of storage. The phone has support for storage expansion, so users can add up to an additional 256GB of storage via the MicroSD card slot. There is also a Snapdragon 660 version which has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage.

There are dual cameras on the rear of the phone – a 16MP f/2.0 sensor + 2MP f/2.4 sensor. Just like the Honor 8X, the camera sensors are arranged vertically on the 8X Max. The front camera is an 8MP f/2.0 sensor. There is also a fingerprint scanner on the rear of the phone.

Honor is advertising the 8X Max as a media consumption device so it has packed it with stereo speakers with Dolby Atmos audio technology. It also has a large 5,000mAh battery with support for 9V/2A fast charging. It can also charge other devices including the Honor band via USB OTG.

The phone also runs EMUI 8.2.0 based on Android 8.1 Oreo.

Drone technology has gained tremendous acceptance and is now utilized in several sectors of the global economy. Its deployment cuts across tracking down illegal immigrants, poachers, trans-border drug traffickers and in some cases terrorists. Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) are also useful in the movie industry and at homes as a plaything. We are about to see the first of such drones that would come with both amphibious and aerial capabilities and manoeuvres. Known as Spry, the drone is said to be the only waterproof drone that submerges under water, floats like a boat and flies in the air.

Spry is built to be able to submerge for some moments under water and float back to the surface. It can also flip on its back and fly like a bird. It is built with an optically-engineered polycarbonate dome which provides high transparency without distortion and so it is strong and durable. Most importantly, it is waterproof. Not only is the drone waterproof, the remote control can also be used inside water.

In addition, the drone is equipped with an interchangeable battery which can fly for up to 17 minutes. The battery can also supply power for flights of speeds of up to 70 kilometres per hour (43mph). This speed was achieved using its standard two-blade propellers. Thus, with three blades it can go even faster. It comes with several other features of high-end drones such as GPS, follow a subject, automatic levelling, one-button return command etc.

Mi 8 Youth Edition may be the upcoming ¥1999 phone from Xiaomi

The Mi 8 series already has three members – the Snapdragon 710-powered Mi 8 SE and the Snapdragon 845-powered Mi 8 and Mi 8 Explorer Edition. New reports have revealed Xiaomi may be adding two more members. According to Mysmartprice, the two new Mi 8 variants are the Mi 8 Youth and the Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition. Think of the latter as a sort of Mi 8 UD.

Apart from the names of the two new models, the color variants and memory configuration for both phones have also surfaced. The Mi 8 Youth will come in three variants and three memory configurations while the Mi 8 Screen Fingerprint Edition will have two color variants and two memory configurations.

The Mi 8 Youth Edition will launch in 4GB + 64GB, 6GB + 64GB, and 6GB + 128GB variants. Available color variants are Space Gray, Gold, and Blue. The Mi 8 with an in-display fingerprint sensor will be available in 6GB + 128GB and 8GB + 128GB while available color variants are listed as black and gold.

Chinese leaker @Ice Universe believes the Mi 8 Youth Edition may be the ¥1999 (~$292/€252) phone scheduled to launch in mid-September. However, the rumored processor is more of upper mid-range (Snapdragon 670/Snapdragon 710) than high-end.

Huawei officially launches the new Kirin 980 chipset in China

Just five days after its official unveiling at IFA 2018, Huawei has launched its latest Kirin 980 AI chipset in China. The new chipset was launched in a ceremony held earlier today. The Kirin 980 happens to be the world’s first chipset built on the 7nm process. The new chipset also scores another first as it is the first commercial ARM Cortex-A76 chipset having two large Cortex-A76 cores. In addition, it is the first chipset with a Cat.21 4.5G baseband, 1.7Gbps Wi-Fi as well as dual-core NPUs.

As a result of these improvements, the Hisilicon Kirin 980 chipset comes with a 37% increase in its overall performance over the Snapdragon 845chipset and also is 32% higher in energy efficiency when compared to Qualcomm’s flagship chip. In comparison with its predecessor, the Kirin 980 chipset has a mammoth 75% increase in performance over the Kirin 970 while energy efficiency is increased by 58%.

The Kirin 980 AI chip is also integrated with theARM Mali-G76 which is equally a first in terms of commercialization. Huawei attaches great importance to photography. I’m sure we can remember the Mate 9/ Canon DSLR camera sample photo fiasco which engulfed the P9 after it was launched in 2016. The company won’t likely have any need to pass a DLSR camera sample for that of its upcoming flagship because the new chipset is integrated with a new generation of dual-core ISPs. Thus, image processing speed has increased by 46%, shooting energy efficiency has increased by 23%, and shooting response speed has increased by 32%. At the same time, there are multiple noise reduction technologies to enhance the details of the photos.

Kirin 980 supports the new Goggles 2.0 AI system, which has tremendous improvement in sensing, measurement, cognition and calculation. It supports 33 APIs as well as 147 operators and supports real-time multi-person gesture recognition, real-time intelligent video processing and so on. The HiAI platform continues to be open to the public and supports a variety of third-party application access, especially AR augmented reality, video, photo taking, and more.
